The Friday Read: A Scranton Music Festival Weekend in Northeast Pennsylvania

Good Things Are Happening Music Festival.

Thanks, my friends, for joining us for another edition of The Friday Read, where we cover a bit of everything written by yours truly — from gear to spirits to menswear — to sort out your weekend in style. Today’s post is a bit more of the same, just with a slightly different spin.

If you follow me on Instagram, you know I get the chance to hit the road consistently via my many freelance writing pursuits, from spirits to style, music, watches and more. In fact, this CoolMaterial.com review of my favorite Hamilton timepiece hails from one of my more recent freelance trips. But onto business!

This weekend’s jaunt is more on the personal side, although it does touch on my love of music, all the while featuring several talented friends in the industry. Naturally, I also cover indie music over at Atwood Magazine, so you can expect some thoughts in short order on, well, what we’re about to get into below!

Yes indeed, tomorrow I’ll be venturing out to the home of my blonde-haired sweetheart Mary – Scranton, PA! – for the Good Things Are Happening music festival, a bastion of indie rock put on by my friend and talented indie musician James Barrett (himself a Scranton native!).

There’s James above, rocking out last year at the festival he himself tirelessly organizes! James has become a dear friend of mine through our shared love of indie rockers The National, whom we’ve seen twice together in concert — talk about banner nights all around!

You could say that worlds are colliding, what with James’ music, my own personal connection to the area (Hi, Mary!) and of course, a very solid dose of music festival style incoming. I trekked Northeast to Boston in April to see The Killers play at the stellar Boston Calling music festival, so you might say I’m no stranger to festival style as of late (like the rugged, durable stretch jeans found below).

And this time, I plan to take on a sunny (yet likely muddy!) Scranton day wearing a few of my favorite style essentials from Huckberry — including rugged boots and my trusty denim jacket, of course. What’s on your packing list when you hit the road to a music festival?

The forecast calls for sunny skies, so here’s hoping it holds out — and here’s to another standout weekend of craft beer, great tunes, friendship and, dare I say, love! What are you spinning as of late? Let me know in the comments below, and stay tuned for more menswear and music content incoming via my Instagram. Cheers, my friends!

The Friday Read: The Best Menswear for Early Fall & The National’s Homecoming Festival

Best early fall menswear from Huckberry.

Some weekends, it seems that just about everything tends to come together. For me, that revolves around a few key things consistently: For one, there’s the best fall menswear (or at least, early fall style essentials), which you can rely on in rugged fashion time and time again — the denim jacket seen above from Huckberry is a prime example of what might be in your rotation sooner rather than later.

Be it some of the best Chelsea boots on the market (perhaps a pair you’ve not yet tried!), or something like the Filson Tin Cloth Cruiser Jacket, those picks really help jumpstart most of my early fall weekends.

How about yourself? Now, fall’s best men’s style essentials are just one element to the equation. If you follow me on Instagram or keep up with my many freelance writing pursuits, you’ll know that I dabble in everything from watches to the best whiskey for your bar cart to music.

Topo Designs x The National

So, each of those themes tends to make one of the best fall weekends a reality for me, but again, it all starts with the best fall menswear. From there, you can usually throw in a healthy dose of live music, as I’m doing this weekend — and this one is an extra special occasion.

I’m once again hitting the road to see The National (as I’ve done this summer in Nashville, New Haven and Philly!), but this one might take the cake. Keep on scrolling…

The National Homecoming Fest.

It’s the second-ever edition of The National’s Homecoming Festival, a celebration of the famed Ohio indie band’s uniquely cerebral, deep, introspective approach to indie rock. It’ll also be my second time in Cincy, and I can’t wait to explore more of the city.

Now, I know this is primarily a style blog, and The National aren’t quite everyone’s cup of tea — but if you so happen to be into the band, into the stylish onstage antics of lead singer Matt Berninger, and in attendance at Smale Riverfront Park in Cincinnati, Ohio, drop me a line by all means or give me a follow on Instagram!

If you so happen to be in attendance, you’ll hear two of the best albums in full from the past decade-plus, and even more beyond that.

All of which is to say: Again, when I can bring it all together, when I can enjoy the best fall menswear from a site like Huckberry alongside delicious Cincy craft beer (from a brewery like Rhinegeist), all serenaded by the music of my favorite band, well, that makes perhaps the best fall weekend imaginable for me.
