#OOTD: Step Out in Classic Winter Style This Season With Your New Favorite Gear

So, my friends — here we are. The last day of 2019 — can you believe it?? Make no mistake, you can still roll your favorite style essentials (like this #OOTD) into 2020. In fact, I highly recommend it. Now, as I’m sure you know, it’s New Year’s Eve. Presumably, you’re prepared for the big night? But we’re going to look ahead a little bit, with the sort of winter style essentials you can wear beyond just tonight (although if you still need some help with what to wear on New Year’s Eve, you should check out that post as linked there). We’re talking about gear that’s fit for a casual office or a weekend happy hour in equal measure. Heck, if your New Year’s Eve is going to be more casual, then this should provide some inspiration, too. That being said, you’ll recognize the right men’s style gear for winter regardless, from a classic crewneck sweater to your new favorite flannel shirt and beyond. Again, the emphasis is on gear that you can wear beyond just a fancy New Year’s Eve, and I think you’ll be mighty pleased at the versatility we’re giving you to start 2020. Yes, that includes rugged leather boots and a tough casual watch, as well as plenty of new everyday favorites. So, how about it? Let’s show you how to start 2020 the right way. Like what you see? Head to my Instagram for more real-time men’s style tips.

Taking the classics you know and love, then amping them up just a bit for winter.

  • The Classic Sweatshirt: Birdwell Beach Britches Garment-Dyed Raglan Crew, $89.95 — The folks at Birdwell Beach Britches have been making classically rugged-yet-laidback gear for decades now, from swim trunks to essential winter style picks like this classic crewneck sweatshirt in a handsome shade of indigo. The perfect winter sweater (I should know, I’ve been testing it courtesy of the brand!).
  • The Shirt: Western Rise TechWool Flannel Shirt, $119 — A classic crewneck sweatshirt like the onne seen above can be layered up with just about anything — especially this stylish flannel shirt from Western Rise. It’s moisture-wicking to keep you comfortable, and this is also a uniquely office-ready flannel shirt.
  • The Jacket: Flint and Tinder Golden Bear Leather Jacket, $998 — Now, is this classic leather jacket well-suited for, say, the polar vortex? Not quite — but the rest of the time? Yes indeed, this is one of the best leather jackets your menswear writer has seen in some time. In fact, one could say every guy needs a leather bomber jacket in his rotation, and this is the one to buy.
  • The Pants: Duluth Trading Co. DuluthFlex Ballroom Slim-Fit Khaki Pants, $59.50 — This is a classic pairing all the way through — slim, surprisingly durable chinos and one of the best leather jackets never fails. These Duluth Trading Co. khakis are made from pre-washed cotton twill and spandex for comfort and durability; they’ll also provide great mobility thanks to the Hidden Crouch Gusset®.
  • The Boots: HELM Boots Marion Color No. 8 Boots, $395 — For rugged style that’s fit for winter weather and the office, you need some of the best men’s boots — like these absurdly beautiful HELM boots made with color No. 8 Horween chromexcel leather.
  • The Watch: Martenero Kerrison Watch, $595 –The only way to round out this outfit is with a tough casual watch. In fact, Martenero has quite the habit of making some of the best leather watches on the market. This is the one you need.
  • The Grooming Essential: Duke Cannon Solid Cologne, $25 — Yes, you need some Duke Cannon Solid Cologne in your life. Some of the best men’s solid cologne can give you as much confidence and style as, say, one of the
  • The Everyday Bag: Filson Ballistic Nylon Duffel Backpack, $245 — Whatever your day calls for, be it punching the clock at work or heading across town to grab a coffee, your everyday carry essentials need this tough Filson bag.

The fun thing about taking stock of the men’s style essentials you’ve got in your wardrobe — or perhaps, the ones you need to add — really starts when you realize the versatility you’ve got at your fingertips. How so, Beau? Well, this outfit has a bit of everything, including a classic crewneck sweatshirt that gets a dressier update thanks to the way you layer it up with a stylish flannel shirt. That makes this combo both office and weekend-ready, and it only gets better — it’s helped along by surprisingly tough Duluth Trading Co. chinos that work from Monday through Sunday. The real unsung hero might be that classic leather jacket from Flint and Tinder — seriously, can you ever go wrong with one of the best leather jackets, especially when it’s warm, cozy and durable? Of course, no outfit in cold winter weather is complete without some of the best men’s boots, particularly when they’re made with remarkable color No. 8 Horween chromexcel leather. See, we’re bringing together plenty of what you already have, including a tough Filson bag and naturally, one of the best leather watches you can throw on your wrist. See Now, Buy Now: The Mark Albert Uptown Boots are the Rugged Boots You Need Now

Perfectly rugged, dependable boots to invest in now, then wear all winter.

The right pair of winter boots can go a long way — a really long way — in determining the success of your style ensemble (and your mobility, for that matter) when it comes to getting around during these chilly, snowy times. And with that being said, there’s no better pair of men’s boots to invest in at the moment than the rugged Mark Albert Uptown Boots, some of the best leather boots to slip your feet into for December (and beyond, naturally). Part of the exceptional Huckberry Fall 2019 Catalog (and a hot-selling pair of boots, at that), I’d be willing to bet you don’t quite have a pair like the Mark Albert Uptown Boots in your current rotation. And if you’re already acquainted with Mark Albert boots? Well, best to give a new pair a shot for a new season, ehh? The thing with these rugged leather boots is that they’re aged to perfection already, so they’ll look like you’ve had them for years (thanks to the premium kudu leather), yet you can still break them in all on your own. And given that you’re going to find yourself needing boots for all occasions this season, you’ll have plenty of chances to break ’em in nicely.

SHOP: The Mark Albert Uptown Boots via the Huckberry Fall 2019 Catalog

A tough Vibram outsole helps separate these boots from the pack.

These boots aren’t quite a pair of L.L. Bean boots made to brave the snow, but for days and evenings when you’re not trudging through a blizzard, these Mark Albert boots should do more than just fine. The relatively sleek profile is offset by a durable Vibram outsole for extra grip on slushy streets, while the rich kudu leather pairs quite nicely with casual style picks like slim faded denim and your favorite henley. All of this is to say, these boots assuredly combine form and function quite handsomely, without a doubt. And when you’re hunting down a pair of the best boots for winter, that’s exactly what you need, is it not?

Style Pick of the Week: Duke Cannon Proper Cologne

Only the best men’s cologne you can buy now.

Quick, tell me: What cologne are you going to wear on New Year’s Eve? Yes, that’s right. This is an oddly specific men’s grooming question today on the blog, but the good news is, I’ve got the answer as to cologne for your New Year’s Eve, and well beyond that: The answer, my friends, comes from Duke Cannon and the Duke Cannon Proper Cologne. It’s a recent introduction to the storied Duke Cannon line of grooming essentials, and a type of cologne that you’re going to want to wear every single day — not just on New Year’s Eve (although you should wear it then, too). If you read the blog, you’re likely familiar with Duke Cannon, but here’s the scoop: The Minnesota-based brand makes no-fuss men’s grooming goods, like its “Big Ass Brick of Soap” and its standout beard oils and balms, that simply don’t mess around. It’s pretty great, as well, that Duke Cannon’s grooming goods are inspired by the military (the aforementioned soap bricks are inspired by ones issued to Korean War soldiers), with a portion of proceeds going to veteran’s organizations. So, that’s a nice bonus if you happen to also be shopping for the best new cologne on the market. And again, this cologne really does pass muster.

SHOP: Duke Cannon Proper Cologne

Shown here is the Prescott, one of multiple essential scents you can get from Duke Cannon..

The thing about the truly excellent Duke Cannon Proper Cologne is that it combines all the properties that make Duke Cannon products so essential — the range of scents, from Randolph (with bergamot, lavender and leather) to Prescott (citrus, oakmoss and tonka) is highly versatile, for starters. Even the design of this cologne is well-considered, as the bottle is sleek and the graphic design on this cologne is refined yet rugged, and perfectly stylish. That is to say, this Duke Cannon cologne isn’t like the colognes clogging up valuable space at a big-box department store — it’s modern and refreshing, and again, it’s some of the best men’s cologne you can buy now. But let’s go back to why you should wear it on New Year’s Eve — any of these scents are refined, versatile and simply great-smelling. It’s that sort of finishing touch that’ll elevate any New Year’s ensemble you wear — and heck, any outfit you put together at any time of year, including this winter. If that all sounds like just what you need, then grab the Duke Cannon Proper Cologne now.

The Friday Read: The Best New Leather Jacket, Taylor Stitch Ranch Boots & The Pinstripe Bowl

This classic leather jacket is going to add a ton to your menswear rotation.

Let’s jump into things right off the bat, shall we? The headline mentions above that we’ll talk about the best leather jacket for the season, and in fact, it’s the incredible Buck Mason Bruiser Leather Bomber Jacket as shown above. Especially with New Year’s Eve on the horizon — and particularly if you enjoy going to a rock concert or two — you need one of the best leather jackets you can buy. It’s an apt layer with your favorite henley this winter (trust me). So, we’ve closed out Christmas and are looking toward the end of 2020 — how wild is that?? This weekend though, I’m back in New York and excited despite the cold — in addition to a laidback weekend in Brooklyn, I’m venturing into Manhattan today for a very unique reason. Notably, my alma mater, my beloved Michigan State Spartans, are playing in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium to close out this season! It’s going to be a bitterly cold affar (as any college football game at Yankee Stadium should be), but I’m still beyond excited to see my Spartans right here in NYC. Before the game, I’d say a pint or two will be in order at this weekend’s MSU hub, Stan’s Sports Bar. The rest of the weekend, I’ll be getting out and about in Prospect Park (likely wearing some of my favorite boots and a tough waxed trucker jacket) — how about you? Let me know on Twitter, and let’s keep things rolling along in fine form with the rest of today’s Friday Read — cheers!

  • The good folks at Taylor Stitch always impress me in terms of their commitment to uncompromising quality and style — that’s the case with the brand’s latest take on the remarkable Taylor Stitch Ranch Boots, an extraordinary pair of rugged Chelsea boots that are worth the money. Read more for yourself via my latest at GearMoose.
  • If you’re on the hunt for the unexpected when it comes to the best winter style essentials, have I got a brand for you. Notably, the California-based, surf-inspired and darn-near-legendary team at Birdwell Beach Britches recently debuted a standout winter collection, featuring offerings that range from an expertly washed crewneck sweatshirt to a classic corduroy overshirt. I took a deep dive into the brand for The Manual — prepare to layer up in style!
  • Let’s go back one more time to GearMoose and one of the best winter jackets, as covered by yours truly (naturally). The Barbour Icons Beaufort Jacket is tough, rugged and utterly dependable, even in the worst weather — get the full scoop here.

Alright, my friends — that’ll wrap up today’s take on the best men’s style news and recommendations. However, I do indeed have one more recommendation before you go — this American-made winter jacket from Flint and Tinder is remarkably rugged, well-designed and ready to layer with anything you can dream up (including, preferably, a Birdwell Beach Britches crewneck sweater). Read all about it, try it out, then let me know in the comments how it works out. Thanks for reading!

However, it’s tough to top essential winter style picks like Red Wing Heritage boots or something more casual, like one of the best men’s hooded sweatshirts this season. For what it’s worth, I’m also a huge fan of the Taylor Stitch Fisherman Sweater — how are you gearing up this season? Let me know on Twitter. Thanks for reading!

Style Pick of the Week: Western Rise TechWool Flannel Shirt

A performance-minded flannel shirt for all your winter pursuits.

There are classic flannel shirts that call to mind cold winters, chilly mornings, the good old days, and perhaps … a certain lack of modern style. Now, make no mistake, I love — I mean, LOVE — a rugged flannel shirt as much as the next guy (check out this Filson flannel shirt, for starters), but what if you’re looking for a modern flannel shirt? That’s where Western Rise enters the equation today, and they do so with one of the best men’s flannel shirts you can buy right now. Yes indeed, the Western Rise TechWool Flannel Shirt delivers all the style points you’d expect from your standard flannel shirt, and it does so using fabrication and product specs that are as modern as can be. To wit: The TechWool Flannel Shirt is made with a blend of COOLMAX fibers and fine-gauge wool, plus elasterell polyester for stretch, comfort and breathability — it’s a downright revolutionary fabric blend that’s as comfortable as it is stylish. So, bonus points to Western Rise for that. Did I mention it’s also moisture-wicking and odor-resistant? Because it can do that, too.

SHOP: Western Rise TechWool Flannel Shirt

One of the best flannel shirts — and one that blends performance and style.

All of that would certainly be enough to make it one of the best men’s shirts on the market — period — but it’s also got a few more things going for it (to say the least). Namely, this slim flannel shirt features a fit that’s, well, slim and tailored — not bad for a cold-weather staple. That means, in my mind, that you can pair the Western Rise TechWool Flannel Shirt with your favorite henley or all on its own underneath everything from a tough workwear jacket to a stylish denim jacket (add a scarf and classic beanie cap when things get chilly). The Cloud color is cool and contemporary, as well — it’s almost akin to your trusty classic Oxford shirt, so you can wear it with a navy cotton blazer or a shawl collar cardigan to head to the office (yes, yes you can). That go-anywhere potential also means you can wear this stylish flannel shirt each and every day of the week, and that means on the weekends (with a laidback crewneck sweatshirt and chinos), as well as  during the work week and out on the road. For a one-of-a-kind flannel shirt, the only option right now is the Western Rise TechWool Flannel Shirt.

Cheers!

The Friday Read: A New Holiday Jacket, Florsheim’s Latest Launch & Gifts for the Whiskey Lover

The perfect winter jacket for the holidays and beyond.

OK, who’s ready for another winter Friday? The last winter Friday before Christmas, at that! Still wondering what gifts to buy for the stylish guy on your list? I’ve got you covered. And today’s Friday Read is going to take care of business quite nicely, too — you’ll find out about a new Taylor Stitch jacket, gifts for the whiskey lover, and plenty more. Of course, we’d be remiss not to mention one of the best winter jackets as shown above, a durable and weather-ready Faherty Brand puffer jacket (the Polar Fjord Puffer, to be exact), that’s worth investing in as you dress for the polar vortex (or wherever your holiday takes you). I won’t exactly be needing a rugged winter parka, however — this weekend, I’m hitting the road to sunny Florida yet again for a relaxing week of Christmas vacation! I was just in Florida for a lovely and relaxing Thanksgiving (as seen on my Instagram), and I’m very excited to get back! It’s always a wonderful time in Fort Myers, from trying out new and old breweries (Point Ybel Brewing is a perennial favorite) to taking in fun holiday activities like checking out the illustrious grounds of the Edison Ford Winter Estates, done up with excellent holiday decor. For now though, I’ve got my holiday party to enjoy at my day job, and a bit of a search for last-minute holiday gifts to undertake this weekend. Get your own weekend started the right way with another edition of the Friday Read — cheers to the season!

  • As we said above, ’tis the season to layer up in style with one of the best new men’s jackets for your closet — in this case, we’re talking about a handsome bomber jacket from Taylor Stitch, as covered by yours truly at GearMoose. It’s both elegant and rugged at the same time — it’s the perfect holiday layer, in short. Heck, it could even be a reliable suggestion if you’re still searching for what to wear to your holiday party.
  • So, we mentioned Faherty Brand up above — and there’s reason to turn back toward this highly stylish brand again, seeing as Faherty is offering expedited shipping and guaranteed delivery by the 24th on orders placed by Saturday. Hop to it, folks!
  • Just when you thought the good folks at Florsheim couldn’t churn out men’s shoes that were any more essential or stylish, they drop the Florsheim Fuel Reflect Capsule, a new, ultra-shiny and sleek set of dress shoes with some futuristic iridescent design touches. Perfect for, again, that last-minute holiday party. I covered it for The Manual, so check it out if you’re in need of some stylish dress shoes.
  • Now, we’ll turn back to GearMoose for another crucial holiday gift suggestion. I didn’t pen this particular piece, but that doesn’t mean I’m any less enthralled by this roundup of the best gifts for whiskey lovers — perfect to gift to the guy who loves a great Old Fashioned.
  • Lastly, it’s been a momentous year for music – favorite albums of mine included two ethereal releases from Brooklyn indie rockers Big Thief (that’d be both “Two Hands” and “U.F.O.F.”), as well as the excellent “Remind Me Tomorrow” by the lovely Sharon Van Etten. Of course, it goes without saying that “I Am Easy To Find” by The National is an all-time favorite, too. That being said, it’s always fun to read about the best albums of 2019 from a different perspective — in this case, Stereogum has put together a list of the top 50 albums of 2019, and it’s certainly worth your time.

So, maybe you’re still searching for the perfect last-minute gift, as we talked about above — with all that being said, maybe you know someone who’d love to have, say, the best pair of men’s jeans waiting for them under the tree? That’s where the Mott and Bow Slim Stone Denim comes into play, some of the most stylish jeans you can buy (and some of the more affordable premium jeans on the market, at that).
