The Tuesday Steal: This Billy Reid Shirt is a New Fall Menswear Classic to Buy Right Now

Although it’s only just now the end of August, the time is still here to stock up for fall with one of the best shirts for men, the kind of shirt you can wear all day long. The Billy Reid Offset Pocket Shirt, my friends, is that very shirt. It’s available right now for under $100, making it a fine Tuesday Steal, but any way you look at it, it’s one heck of a fall shirt to buy now and wear from August into September and well beyond. It’s part of the Billy Reid Final Sale section, sure, but that doesn’t mean it’s of subpar quality, design or construction. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. It’s pretty rare to find one of the best men’s shirts for fall up for grabs at this point for under $100, and that’s just part of the reason why you should add this classic Oxford shirt to your wardrobe (don’t worry, future posts will dive into another #OOTD on how to wear an Oxford shirt for men, for instance). Plus, the fact that the pocket is placed in a slightly different spot than average is pretty neat.

Design perks aside, focus on adding this shirt to your wardrobe and reaping the rewards as far as versatile, affordable style is concerned.

Get your new go-to fall shirt from Billy Reid

Wear it as often as you can, starting now

The Billy Reid Offset Pocket Shirt, with details like signature striping at the shirt hem, exemplifies what the classic American designer does best, which is make solid everyday staples using premium processes and fabrics. The result is elevated above the ordinary, and that’s an understatement. In the case of your new favorite shirt, that means this Oxford shirt is made in Portugal from, not surprisingly, 100 percent Oxford cotton cloth in a rich, deep shadow plaid. The shadow plaid of the Billy Reid Offset Pocket Shirt would actually pair quite nicely with tan or auburn Billy Reid chinos or jeans for a sharp, business casual-ready ensemble.

SHOP: The Billy Reid Offset Pocket Shirt

It’s also designed with a standard fit, which isn’t overly slim nor overly baggy. The result is a classic men’s shirt that looks great untucked or teamed with, say, a refined Billy Reid blazer and faded jeans for date night or office-minded style. When you can snag a deal on something as essential, cool and highly wearable as the Billy Reid Offset Pocket Shirt, my best advice is to add one to your wardrobe as quickly as you can.

Style Pick of the Week: Taylor Stitch Bomber Jacket – The Best Transitional Jacket for Men

The Bomber Jacket in Charcoal Jungle Cloth | Taylor Stitch…

A guy has to be prepared for plenty of possible style situations, including those instances moving from summer to fall where temperatures change unexpectedly, inclement weather hits, and rugged outerwear is the only way to go. Enter one of the best transitional jackets for men, a durable and hard-wearing number that can only be found at Taylor Stitch. Perhaps you’ve become acquainted over the years, like me, with the dependable and incredibly well-made rotation of outerwear at Taylor Stitch. They cover off on plenty of different bases, be it waxed trucker jackets, indigo denim jackets or now, this organic cotton bomber jacket practically made for layering as we move through September (more on the use of “jungle cloth” cotton shortly).

The Taylor Stitch Bomber Jacket is simply named, but packs a serious punch as far as style points are concerned. That’s not to mention the sort of functionality you get with a tough jacket made to take on chilly days aplenty. In addition to the handy two-way zipper, it also features storm flaps with custom hardware YKK snaps for extra coverage when it gets a bit too blustery out there. As ever, it seems like Taylor Stitch has thought of everything with the Taylor Stitch Bomber Jacket , and that’s because the San Francisco-based brand has done just that.

SHOP: The Taylor Stitch Bomber Jacket

The Bomber Jacket in Charcoal Jungle Cloth | Taylor Stitch…

It’s one of the best men’s bomber jackets because it’s a highly unique take on the style, done the way only Taylor Stitch can make a finely crafted men’s jacket. Small touches like the vintage San Francisco map print pocketing, a true Taylor Stitch detail that only the brand can dream up, showcase that care and attention to detail quite nicely. And if you’ve been wondering “What is jungle cloth?” well, here’s a quick primer. It’s a tightly woven cotton, akin to corduroy, and the custom hardware used by Taylor Stitch pops quite nicely here against this breathable-yet-long-lasting 12oz. cotton weave.

It’s a rugged take on the bomber jacket, and one that any lover of versatile style can appreciate (note the wear-with-anything charcoal color, for starters). The Taylor Stitch Bomber Jacket should layer up with ease atop a Taylor Stitch henley, but it can also be paired with, naturally, a classic Taylor Stitch Oxford shirt as you head back to the office. It’s also going to look equally stellar with timeless Taylor Stitch chinos or the brand’s rugged selvedge denim. If you want one of the best transitional jackets for men, then this bomber jacket should be your go-to move, starting right now.

All of those style staples look pretty good to me, although it’s just a bit hot still in Michigan (where I happen to be this weekend for a wedding!). I’ll actually be wearing my Buck Mason Carry-On Suit for the festivities outside of Grand Rapids (congrats, Alyssa and Pat!), but again, I can’t wait to work some more fall-minded pieces into my wardrobe once September hits and I return to NYC. In the spirit of planning ahead, I’ll direct you to a few more fall-centric reading and shopping picks in the rest of today’s Friday Read below. I’ll also direct you to subscribe to my music-menswear-craft beer newsletter, The Style Guide In Brief, which publishes again tomorrow. Cheers and thanks for reading!

  • Now, here’s a suggestion for the weekend I think you’ll enjoy if you read this blog on the regular. Truly, there really are certain things a guy should have at his disposal, in his arsenal of intelligence, if you will. It’s an area in which I need to improve, and that’s why I’m grateful for the new, updated 2021 edition of Stuff Every Man Should Know, by author Brett Cohen. He’s updated his 2009 tome on the topic, which covers everything from how to hold a baby to how to stock a basic bar cart. It’s fun, it’s downright useful and you can get the book right now at Barnes & Noble (and elsewhere) for a highly agreeable price.
  • Fall is an optimal time to take stock of the gear you’re hauling, and specifically, how exactly you happen to be hauling that gear. That’s why I was pleased to see the new line of United By Blue workwear bags and totes, launched earlier this week and made from 100 percent organic cotton. These everyday carry bags are rugged, durable and well-made, to say the very least. Use them for seasonal road trips or fall projects, day in and day out. I personally love the Workwear Duffle, so give that one a look before you plan that weekend getaway.
  • If the headline of this blog post is really what caught your attention — including a reference to a certain actor in the famed BBC drama Peaky Blinders, then you’re in luck. For, I wrote about the new Cillian Murphy campaign for Montblanc, which highlights the refined Montblanc UltraBlack Collection of essentials and everyday carry gear. Head to Maxim to give it a read yourself. Tommy Shelby definitely approves.

That’s going to wrap up today’s Friday Read, and I do hope we covered a bit of something for everyone, whether you really love the new Montblanc campaign with Cillian Murphy, or whether you happen to be in the market for some new everyday carry bags prior to an early fall road trip. Let me recommend one last seasonal essential, and that would be my guide to the best fall boots from Huckberry here on the blog. Happy reading and happy shopping, folks!

The Thursday Buy: Mott and Bow Is Making the Best Fall Jeans for Men

A great wardrobe, or at least a wardrobe in progress, is packed with men’s style essentials for situations aplenty. Take the best jeans for men. It’s no easy feat to find the right pair to begin with, let alone a pair that works for changing seasons. Here’s where Mott and Bow comes into play (NOTE: First-time customers can get 10 percent off with the code beau10). The NYC-based retailer, a favorite of mine on the blog over the years (and a brand also found in my Style Guide Shop) is now making some essential jeans for fall (to go along with the best jeans for summer). Meet the Mott and Bow Mercer Slim-Fit Jeans, made with a medium-weight 10oz. cotton and available in a particularly seasonal Olive color. These are jeans you can wear with your favorite pocket T-shirt right now (also from Mott and Bow), and then jeans you can readily style as you layer up with a waxed trucker jacket and a rugged henley on chilly fall nights. Consider it the tip of the iceberg, because these could be your new favorite jeans.

There’s a lot to love about the Mott and Bow Mercer Slim-Fit Jeans as we head into fall, including the ways in which the Olive tone (one of 10 versatile colors available) fits in with the colors of the season. Add in the Slim fit, and you’ve got yourself a clean pair of jeans to wear to the office or at home (they’re also available in Straight and Skinny fits, though). It can certainly be mighty tricky to find your new favorite jeans, what with so many options out there (some, a bit too pricey, some far too cheap). Mott and Bow toes that fine line quite nicely, using that medium-weight twill denim with a hint of stretch to give you plenty of bang for your buck in a well-executed pair of jeans. They’re comfort stretch jeans perfected with the family knowledge of founder Alejandro Chanin, whose family has been involved in the denim industry for decades. Low Cost. High Quality. Classic wardrobe essentials for less!

The result is a pair of the best jeans for 2021, available in a suitably rich, fall-ready color that pops nicely against a white Oxford shirt or your favorite chambray shirt, for starters (something that Mott and Bow also makes, as luck would have it). Customize the Mott and Bow Mercer Slim-Fit Jeans to your liking with fit, sizing and try-on options, layer them accordingly with a thermal henley and a rugged trucker jacket, or better still, wear them starting right now with a classic T-shirt. See Now, Buy Now: This Buck Mason Vintage Twill Shirt is the Rugged Shirt to Buy Now

Zoomed product image

If there’s anything I hope you’ve picked up these last few weeks on the blog, it’s that preparing nice and early with the best fall style essentials is only going to benefit you in a big, big way. That could be as simple as figuring out how to wear chinos or it could go beyond that, like picking up the best jeans for men or, say, one of the most rugged shirts on the market. It’s that second topic that we’ll focus on today, and it’s high time we did so: Buck Mason is, quite simply, one of the best brands to get you ready for early fall (you’ll find more where that came from in the Shop By The Style Guide).

Satchel and Page

Buck Mason already makes plenty of stellar basics, like the coolest pocket tee on the market, and they’ve really done quite a number with the Buck Mason Double Weave Vintage Twill Shirt. It’s the kind of shirt you don’t have to think too hard about wearing, the kind of shirt that looks good with most anything, and the kind of shirt you can wear now and into early fall (and beyond) when layered properly. Start with, well, the basics, like a Buck Mason T-shirt for when the summer sun sets. Then, ramp things up come fall with a rugged Buck Mason henley. That versatility is part of what makes the Buck Mason Double Weave Vintage Twill Shirt an essential transitional shirt, but there’s much more where that came from.

SHOP: The Buck Mason Double Weave Vintage Twill Shirt

Zoomed product image

There’s a laundry list of positive attributes that make the Buck Mason Double Weave Vintage Twill Shirt a standout in the world of durable and hard-wearing shirts. It’s built in the workshirt style, with tough front-button pockets for your everyday carry, no matter what the job calls for (even if your job involves storing a pocket notebook and a pen close at hand rather than small tools). The Buck Mason Double Weave Vintage Twill Shirt uses a double-faced cotton that blends two different cotton fabrics for a remarkably soft finish and feel on your skin. It’s substantial, but not too heavy, making it the perfect shirt to wear over a T-shirt right now (and come fall and eventually winter).

Satchel and Page

It’s available in four cool-as-can-be colors (like Flint shown above), each of which would look just right when worn alongside, say, expertly faded Buck Mason jeans (always a favorite style move of mine). The Buck Mason Double Weave Vintage Twill Shirt is also lightweight enough that you can wear a warmer base layer, like a thermal shirt, and then throw this tough workshirt over top of it. Make use of it on dewy summer mornings or chilly early fall nights, wear it to the office on a casual Friday or to a bonfire (don’t forget your favorite beer). Just make sure the well-made, solidly priced ($105 at Buck Mason) Buck Mason Double Weave Vintage Twill Shirt is part of your wardrobe this instant.

The Tuesday Steal: This Buck Mason Indigo Henley is the Perfect Layer for Summer & Fall

It seems like just yesterday, devoted readers of The Style Guide, that we were talking about how Buck Mason makes some of the best men’s jeans for summer (and the best summer menswear in general). All that being said, summer is sticking around for just a bit longer — however, it’s never too early to get ready for fall. I’ve been saying that on the blog for the past few days, be it recommending you pick up Todd Snyder’s early fall collection or, in the case of today’s post, hop on the Buck Mason Last Chance Section. Fear not, because there’s gear aplenty up for grabs, including the Buck Mason Medium Wash Indigo Henley. It’s the sort of rugged henley you need in your rotation for late summer into early fall, and we’ll call that the tip of the menswear iceberg. What makes this indigo henley a Tuesday Steal and an ideal addition to your late-summer wardrobe? Well, you can snag the Buck Mason Medium Wash Indigo Henley for $60 right now, a nice, limited-time find to be worn with Buck Mason denim or chinos this season (and beyond — more on that in a second).

Head to the Buck Mason Last Chance Section now

Standout deals on standout menswear

A henley, after all, is a rugged style staple that looks great on every guy, and that’s doubly true of Buck Mason henleys. It comes down to the slightly longer four-button placket, which gives this henley a slightly dressier, more versatile look and feel — it can be worn on its own as easily as it can be layered underneath, say, a deep blue indigo trucker jacket for ideal transitional fall style. The world really is your oyster with a henley as well-made as the Buck Mason Medium Wash Indigo Henley

SHOP: The Buck Mason Medium Wash Indigo Henley

Zoomed product image

This isn’t a run-of-the-mill henley, and it starts with the use of midweight cotton. That’s a step up from the breezy pima cotton found in other Buck Mason henleys, and again, that makes it ideal to wear on its own or layered up beneath a chambray shirt or a denim workshirt. You can even rock the Buck Mason Medium Wash Indigo Henley sans jacket during the day, then layer up a bomber jacket during cooler early fall nights. And because it’s finished off with a form-flattering curved hem and retro-style cuffs at the biceps (similar to other old-school henley undershirts), it’s plenty stylish enough to be worn solo with tan chinos or work pants.

Satchel and Page

The indigo dye process is also rigorous, featuring a process that dips each shirt 15 times (at least). The result is a highly unique shirt that’s going to fade and age the more you wear it, kind of like a pair of selvedge jeans. That touch alone makes the Buck Mason Medium Wash Indigo Henley a downright steal (a Tuesday Steal, if you will) and that means it’s one to add to your cart ASAP for late summer and early fall.
