See Now, Buy Now: The Red Wing Heritage Classic Chukkas Are the Perfect Winter Chukka Boots

Rough and tough chukka boots from an iconic branda.

Check your calendar. And now look at the boots you’ve got on. Are they a stylish pair of leather boots for winter? Better yet, are they the Red Wing Heritage Classic Chukkas? No and no? Well, let’s fix that today via the latest entry in our See Now, Buy Now series. Here at The Style Guide, your author loves a classic, iconic brand like Red Wing Heritage for reasons aplenty, chief among them being the brand’s ongoing commitment to timeless styles and seriously tough construction. Those are both qualities that are going to serve you well this winter. And the Red Wing Heritage Classic Chukkas in particualr just get the job done, to say the very least. Finding the right pair of winter boots is a tricky endeavor in more ways than one — you want a pair that can stand up to snow and slush, yet you’re also going to need to be able to wear them in a myriad number of style situations (as you dress for the office or head to your favorite brewery, in particular). Again, the Red Wing Heritage Classic Chukkas deliver.

Of note, they channel the same timeless construction and quality for which Red Wing Heritage is known, and the brand’s Minnesota roots sure do come in handy — the Red Wing Heritage Classic Chukkas feature an Atlas Tred outsole, plus nickel eyelets for durability throughout the chilly winter. While you might be better off wearing the Huckberry Duck Boots in an extreme blizzard, the Red Wing Heritage Classic Chukkas are as good as it gets the rest of the time. The plain toe chukka construction and briar oil slick leather are two touches that stand out subtly and stylishly, making them an easy bet to wear with everything from expertly faded denim and a grey crewneck sweater to your favorite henley and a tough waxed trucker jacket.

Of course, the Red Wing Heritage Classic Chukkas can also be dressed up ever so slightly — try them with the Billy Reid Bond Peacoat, plus a classic Oxford shirt and slim tan chinos, for Sunday brunch or even a day at the office. Yes, Red Wing Heritage boots can work at the office — it’s possible, folks. Good luck out there, and let me know on Twitter if these boots work out for you.

#OOTD: A New Way to Layer Your Favorite Shawl Collar Cardigan This Season

Ready to layer up for winter? In particular, ready to wear your new favorite cardigan to power through the rest of the season? We’re kicking things off with an extremely luxurious, investment-level cardigan from my friends at Buck Mason — if you follow me on Instagram, you’ve surely seen how I’ve been wearing it. And now, we’re telling you how to wear it for the weeks and months ahead. It’s an extremely easy cardigan to layer, particularly when you pair it with a stylish flannel shirt from Flint and Tinder, along with an equally classic henley from that same brand. Slim denim from Bluffworks — launched earlier this year — keeps this #OOTD crisp and casual. Rugged leather boots give you the option to stomp through the snow on the weekend, or head to the office on a casual Friday (more on that in a second). And again, it all comes back to this stylish, rugged cardigan — this is the type of piece that a style icon like Steve McQueen might have worn, and it’s ably complemented by a classic casual watch and other winter-ready favorites. The only question is, where the heck are you going to wear it? It’s simple, trust me. So, without further ado … here we go.

A classic, premium cardigan, accented by a rugged flannel shirt & tough leather boots. Hello, winter.

Now, the thing about wearing a classic, rugged cardigan like this one from Buck Mason is that it gives you the ultimate in versatility. Use it as a top layer with a scarf for a Sunday park stroll on a warmer-than-expected winter day, or wear it to the office in place of a blazer — the rest of the pieces in this #OOTD can help you there, too. That process starts with a stylish flannel shirt from the great men’s style purveyors at Flint and Tinder, and carries through to the  slim, comfortable denim on tap from Bluffworks. You can choose to keep the stylish henley as part of this outfit (for a casual weekend brewery outing) or you can lose the henley and perhaps throw on a textured slim wool tie if you need to class things up for the office. Step into a durable pair of leather boots — I.E. The outstanding White’s Boots shown above — and then round out your ensemble with stylish patterned socks and a warm winter cap from Faherty Brand. It’s a can’t-miss combo that only gets better when you wear the Zodiac Grandville Watch.Keep your mug looking fresh with some of the best men’s winter grooming picks, and then be sure to reach for the handy, essential Hitch and Timber EDC Slip — all of that, to me, sounds like the makings of a new favorite winter outfit. To keep up with how I’m getting dressed for winter, be sure to follow me on Instagram. Thanks for reading!

Style Pick of the Week: Huckberry Vintage Trainers

Winter is a surprisingly great time to buy stylish sneakers — find out why.

Now, the featured #menswear pick in today’s post — the excellent Huckberry Vintage Trainers — might surprise you a bit. After all, I had previously recommended them in the depths of winter, so why is it essential that you snap one a pair of the best men’s sneakers now? It’s simple: When you find a great deal on any type of style essentials, no matter what, you should go for it (provided you can financially, of course!). And in this case, the Huckberry Vintage Trainers are assuredly one of the best pairs of men’s sneakers to buy now, then keep close by come spring and summer. And if you live in a more temperate climate? Well, you’re in luck, because the Huckberry Vintage Trainers can be worn darn near every day of the week … starting right now. It’s refreshing and exciting to see the great team at Huckberry continue to churn out excellent new footwear, and the Huckberry Vintage Trainers — based on an old vintage Italian military sneaker — are just the latest in that very stylish line.

Shop Faherty BrandSHOP: The Huckberry Vintage Trainers

So, here are the goods on the very cool, very stylish Huckberry Vintage Trainers. Long story short: There are only 100 pairs of the Huckberry Vintage Trainers kicking around, so you’ll want to act quickly. They’re also affordably priced at under $200 for the type of style and quality you’re getting, including the comfortable leather-lined interior and the use of premium suede and leather on the upper.

A low profile and a gum rubber sole make these an excellent sneaker purchase.

The clean design of the Huckberry Vintage Trainers is also to be applauded, from the noticeable lack of branding to the cool gum rubber sole. That sort of design means these sneakers are tailor-made to wear with a classic shawl cardigan, your favorite pair of faded denim, and a rugged henley for a winter coffee run. But the beauty of a classically designed pair of sneakers like the Huckberry Vintage Trainers is that they can work when you need to go a bit more tailored, too. Try out the Huckberry Vintage Trainers with a tan herringbone blazer, a classic chambray shirt and slim black denim at the office on a more casual day, or pair them with a tailored wool suit and that same chambray shirt for a mix of high-low style. Add a refined leather watch and perhaps a classic peacoat, then call it good. Keep in mind, folks, that’s just how you can wear them during the winter months! You’ll want to keep them handy to pair with slim shorts and a stylish graphic tee on many a spring weekend, too. But for now, your first priority should be snapping up a pair of the Huckberry Vintage Trainers before somebody else does. Hop to it!

The Friday Read: The Best Men’s Blazers, The Top Bomber Jackets for Winter & A New Brewery in NYC

A handsome, timeless shirt jacket from one of my favorite brands.

Don’t waste any more time gearing up for the weekend, because style essentials like the Taylor Stitch Summit Shirt (it’s on sale here!) are going to help. That’s the focus of today’s Friday Read, at least — dressing in peak winter style with rugged shirting from Taylor Stitch, then adding a few extra touches (like one of the best men’s bomber jackets — more on that in a second). The Summit Shirt (as seen above) featured a durable wool-poly waffle knit & is part of the brand’s run of new outerwear, so you can be sure it’s up to snuff. How else are you dressing for the weekend? And what’s on your agenda? For me personally, I’m excited to check out a bit of a different show here in NYC than I’m normally used to attending. Two college friends from my time at Michigan State will be in town to see “The Waverly Gallery” by acclaimed director Kenneth Lonergan — it should be a very touching, moving performance. And again, it’ll be a bit different than the rock shows I frequent!

  • We’re also looking forward to exploring Prospect Park in Brooklyn, having a cup or two (or three?) of excellent coffee, and perhaps even tracking down a cold beer from Manhattan’s newest brewery, Torch & Crown Brewing Co.! The new brewery is distributing two styles across beer bars in Manhattan (an IPA and a lager) — it’s exciting stuff. While brewing has been thriving in Brooklyn, Queens and The Bronx, it’s hit a major lull in Manhattan itself — until now. Follow along on my Instagram to see how these beers taste, and to see what one wears to a grab a beer and then head to a Broadway play. Cheers to the weekend, and cheers to today’s Friday Read
  • The bomber jacket is an underrated style move in the winter months, when everyone seems to be reaching for thick parkas. But if you’ve read my post on The Manual on the best men’s bomber jackets, you know that’s not the case. And if you haven’t read it yet? It’s time to get caught up!
  • Let’s talk more about the best of the best in terms of men’s style essentials, shall we? Namely, it’s been a busy week of menswear writing around these parts, which is how I also found myself writing about the best blazers for men — a piece I penned yet again for The Manual. You could do worse than upgrading your office style this month, my friends.
  • Once more, you could use a new dress watch — yes? Luckily for you, I covered the top dress watches to buy now for GearMoose. Between your new bomber jacket, your new blazer and a new dress watch, you’re going to be all set this winter.

Before we let you go for the weekend, I’ll leave you with this post on the best new leather wallet to buy now. What’s more, I’ll also point you in the direction of the 12 best style upgrades (yes, 12!) to keep 2019 rolling. Oh, and one last thing: This stylish field jacket  belongs your back as you fight a chilly winter. OK, that’s a wrap — feel free to check in with me on Twitter if you’ve got any feedback on the blog. Have a great weekend, folks!

#OOTD: How to Wear Your New Favorite Denim Shirt for Winter

The new year, as we’ve been discussing these past few weeks on The Style Guide, calls for continual reflection and, naturally, the best men’s style essentials you can get your hands on. Like the rugged denim shirt from Billy Reid that happens to be the focus of today’s #OOTD.  Now, we’ve previously talked about how to wear a denim shirt for winter, so consider this a bit of a refresher in terms of casual style — this is the type of layered look that would even fly at the office on a casual winter Friday. The Billy Reid Denim Shirt in question is helped along by a stylish long-sleeve shirt from the good folks at Faherty Brand, plus slim chinos and, as ever, classic leather boots.

Your outerwear (*ahem the Flint and Tinder Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker) should also blend functionality and style for the winter — the prevailing thought behind this #OOTD is dependable style that works all week and all weekend. Pieces like a handsome leather watch from Martenero help cement the go-anywhere versatility of this look, too. Really, it’s all about finding new ways to wear pieces you already own — it’s a fun way to shake up your routine in the morning, and you might even find yourself trying some layering tricks you wouldn’t normally go for otherwise. So, with all that being said, it’s time to get down to business. Let me know what you think of this #OOTD over on Twitter. Thanks for reading!

Dependable, functional layers make this #OOTD a winter winner (say that five times fast).

Now, hopefully, we’ve given you something to think about as you upgrade your wardrobe and refresh your style for 2019. When you start things off with a classic denim shirt, the potential really is limitless in terms of versatility. In this case, we’re layering that Billy Reid Denim Shirt  with a stylish long-sleeve tee from Faherty Brand — just the right way to dress for a weekend stroll, a morning coffee date or a casual afternoon at home. Things are amped up just a bit with maybe, just maybe, the perfect slim chinos; that combo is perfect for work or play. Again, classic leather boots add sleek appeal and timeless style, as does a classic everyday watch from Martenero (quite possibly your new favorite watch, agreed?). No outfit would be complete without a tough winter jacket — enter a rugged waxed trucker jacket from Flint and Tinder, then get ready to field all kinds of complements about how great you look (seriously!). And as we always say, you can’t let your accessories fall by the wayside, hence the use of stylish socks from American Trench and a dependable leather belt from Levi’s. To round things out, go for the perfect blend of functionality and timeless style with a stylish backpack from the good folks at Filson. That’s really all there is to it. Well, not quite. But I’d encourage you to try some of these pieces on for size, then catch up with me on Instagram to see how I’m getting dressed this winter.

Style Pick of the Week: Faherty Brand Luxe Heather Henley

Faherty Brand

The best henley to wear all winter? Perhaps, yes.

We talk often at The Style Guide about the men’s style essentials you can’t live without, like the best henley for winter. And we talk often about Faherty Brand, the West Coast-based brand that channels California cool with style for the modern man. Those two qualities come together in the Faherty Brand Luxe Heather Henley, a premium winter style upgrade that you’re going to want to wear this weekend — and the one after that, and the one after that. The Faherty Brand Luxe Heather Henley is perhaps unlike any henley you’ve worn before, featuring soft 100 percent heathered cotton in a rich navy color — perfect for pairing up with slim tan chinos, a shawl collar cardigan (also from Faherty Brand, perhaps?) and your favorite leather boots.

SHOP: The Faherty Brand Luxe Heather Henley

It can be difficult — read: extremely difficult — to find a henley that works in casual style situations (like a trip to your favorite brewery) as well as in instances that more dressy. Yet, true to its name, the Faherty Brand Luxe Heather Henley should wear just as well with slim faded jeans and a rugged shirt jacket as it does with a navy cotton blazer to the office this winter. The chambray detailing and heather fabric kick things up a notch in terms of premium quality — would you expect anything less from Faherty Brand? Surely not.

Your author’s favorite color of this premium henley.

And there’s another, much more simple reason you should consider picking up the Faherty Brand Luxe Heather Henley — every guy looks great in a henley, plain and simple. The sport-inspired roots of the silhouette, plus the raglan sleeve stitching on this particular henley, lend a rugged appeal to even the most straightforward winter outfits (think a classic chambray shirt and slim corduroy pants). The Faherty Brand Luxe Heather Henley is also available in three easily wearable colors, although the navy option shown above has the most inventory available. In my mind, that makes the Faherty Brand Luxe Heather Henley the perfect pick-up for your next winter weekend outing. It’s also helpful to have a closet stocked full of warm, cozy (yet stylish!) base layers with many a chilly day ahead — this henley is an on-point layering option that looks great even when you step out of your winter parka. In short, I really don’t see any downside to picking up the  Faherty Brand Luxe Heather Henley — what say you? Feel free to let me know your thoughts about this piece on Twitter. Thanks for reading!

Many thanks and cheers as we kick off today’s Friday Read, my friends! Doesn’t it seem like time is just … flying by? It sure seems like you’d do well to stay on track with the stylish leather watch from Miansai seen above. Yes indeed, the Miansai M12 Vintage Cognac Leather Watch is the one to buy this weekend. And given that we’re halfway through the month, I’d say your wardrobe and your footwear situation might be due for an upgrade — we’ll tackle that more below, but as we stomp through winter, crucial men’s style essentials like some of the best men’s leather boots should be on your radar. Or the best cardigan to buy now. Or a classic chambray shirt. You get the picture.

At any rate, it’s been a focus of mine over these past few weeks to really reach for quality pieces that stand the test of time (if you follow me on Instagram, you might recognize this!). Pieces like a classic shawl cardigan from Buck Mason, or some rugged leather boots from my pals at Danner (as seen in this post). It’s been a fun exercise, one that I’m going to continue in the next few weeks. For now though, I’m very excited to host a trio of longtime Michigan friends in my suddenly-too-small Brooklyn apartment for the long holiday weekend — we’ll be visiting classic NYC haunts like McSorley’s Old Ale House and also checking the unique Museum of the American Gangster (as one does). Again, you  can follow along with all the fun on my Instagram. Cheers to the weekend!

  • The best way to power through the doldrums of winter? Why, with the perfect flannel shirt from Faherty Brand. Read more in this post on the blog covering exactly why you need a new flannel shirt in your cold-weather arsenal.
  • I’m all for cracking open a flavorful, rich beer at the end of the day — if you fall into the same category, you’d do well to pick up this handsome-yet-utilitarian bottle opener from Discommon, a feature I covered for GearMoose. Cheers!
  • Speaking of essentials to help you power through winter, this durable field coat is a winter outerwear essential. I  wrote recently on the blog about how it’s made to perform in the weather and look great while doing it, too. Yessir, the Proof Field Jacket could become a new favorite for the season.

Right then — what type of men’s style essentials are you looking forward to wearing this weekend (and beyond)? If you still need to step up your game in this young new year, look toward my favorite men’s style suggestions for winter. Or, rethink how you wear a classic staple like the best peacoat in your arsenal. Mix and match to your heart’s content, my friends. Have a great weekend, and thanks for reading!
