The List: Stay Warm in Style This Winter with All the Best New Menswear for 2020

Step out with a crucial layer this winter — one of the best men’s flannel shirts from Faherty Brand.

Getting dressed in style this winter needn’t be boring — at least, that’s what I’m here to try to convince you of as we kick off 2020 and another edition of The List. For those new to the blog, The List represents all the best new men’s style essentials to buy for each and every season — compiled weekly, at that. And I think you’re going to appreciate the blend of gear we’ve got going on today, from a classic flannel shirt to the perfect jeans from Mott and Bow. That’s really only the tip of the iceberg, though. After all, getting dressed for winter doesn’t have to mean throwing on endless layers and then calling it a day — you’ll see that below. Happy shopping!

Faherty Brand Stretch Seaview Flannel — $148

A classically rugged flannel from a timeless brand — perfect for winter.

To layer up for winter, you need to start out on the right foot — or in this case, with the right shirt. The Faherty Brand Stretch Seaview Flannel is a personal favorite for its blend of comfort, durability and rugged style. That makes it the perfect flannel shirt for winter, and indeed, one of the best men’s flannel shirts … period.

Jack Mason Aviator 3-Hand Watch — $195

This could be the perfect everyday watch from Jack Mason — rugged, casual and yet versatile.

The ideal casual watch for everyday wear this winter could be this stylish Jack Mason timepiece — inspired by aviation and the art of flight, this sleek leather watch is perfect for both business casual and weekend style settings. Trust me, I’ve tested it out (as you might have seen on my Instagram).

Duke Cannon Beer and Bourbon Box — $25

Richly crafted soaps in cool, beer and bourbon-infused scents.

The best men’s grooming essentials sometimes come in small packages — or at least in the case of Duke Cannon, they come in a set featuring the brand’s famed and highly functional Big Ass Bar of Soap. The Duke Cannon Beer and Bourbon Box uses some standout scents to upgrade your winter grooming.
Flint and Tinder Shaggy Scottish Sweater — $168

A cozy, comfortable and yet rugged sweater from Flint and Tinder up for sale.

Yes indeed, the folks at Flint and Tinder have done it again — the Flint and Tinder Scottish Sweater is made in Scotland, as luck would have it, from soft brushed wool. It’s the best sweater for cold winter mornings (and evenings, for that matter).
Mott and Bow Harrison Shirt — $145

A classic cotton flannel shirt in a tailored fit, done up in a cool plaid pattern.

So, what shirt are you going to layer under the Flint and Tinder Scottish Sweater? That’d be the Mott and Bow Harrison Shirt — an exceptionally stylish flannel shirt for winter from the makers of your favorite jeans. That’s a perfect winter style combo, if you ask me.
Nick’s Boots Falcon Boots — $495

These are surely some of the best men’s boots you can buy for winter.

If there’s one thing you need for winter, it’s a great pair of winter boots. And not just any old pair will do — lace up some investment-level boots you can wear for days on end this winter. Specifically, step into the rugged, absurdly beautiful Nicks Boots Falcon Boots. Together with one of the best men’s flannel shirts, you’ve got the makings of a top-notch winter ensemble.
Taylor Stitch Heavy Bag Henley in Heather Grey — $68

Cozy, warm and rugged — everything you need in a henley, and then some.

OK, so you’ve got one of the best men’s flannel shirts, you’re lacing up your investment-level boots … what’s missing? Easy, a rugged henley from Taylor Stitch. The Heavy Bag Henley is made with upcycled fabric and features a comfortable-yet-flattering fit — one of the best men’s henleys I’ve tested.
Harpoon Brewery Winter Warmer — Price Varies

A rich winter beer to warm dark, cold nights.

The aptly named Harpoon Brewery Winter Warmer is one of the best beers for winter, all owing to its classically inspired recipe (cinnamon and nutmeg feature heavily), along with its long lineage — it’s been brewed since 1988, after all. I’m a big fan after testing it out courtesy of the brewery (thanks, guys!), and I think you’ll appreciate it, too.

Mott and Bow Connor Heavy Cable Crew — $225

Another rugged sweater to wear with your favorite Mott and Bow jeans.

Yes, you read that right — Mott and Bow continues to move beyond denim (although it’s assuredly some of the best men’s denim) with pieces like this classic cable crew sweater. It’s, naturally, the ideal piece to pair with Mott and Bow jeans.

Filson Medium Submersible Dry Duffel Bag — $200

The rare duffel bag that’ll keep your gear dry no matter where you go.

If you want an everyday duffel bag that’s every bit as rugged as your favorite men’s gear from Filson, then the Filson Medium Submersible Dry Duffel Bag is the one you need by your side for all your winter adventures.
Faherty Brand Sun & Waves Shawl Cardigan — $398

The perfect winter cardigan? Maybe so. Try it from Faherty Brand to find out.

Yes indeed, we’re going with another entry from Faherty Brand in this edition of The List. The uniquely designed Faherty Brand Sun & Waves Cardigan jumps right out at you in the best way possible — that eyecatching pattern makes it one of the best shawl cardigans to buy this season. Who said winter style wasn’t fun?

Danner Full Bore Boots — $150

Tough boots featuring water-resistant suede and a Vibram outsole.

The best hiking boots can come in quite handy when it comes time to navigate snowy streets and trails, and the Danner Full Bore Boots fit the mold quite stylishly.

Flint and Tinder Raglan Waffle Henley — $62

A tough henley that pulls no punches in terms of standout style.

Of course, it really wouldn’t be an edition of The List if we didn’t recommend one of the best men’s henleys — the pleasingly rugged Flint and Tinder Raglan Waffle Henley is the perfect henley to wear under a flannel shirt (and that’s just one styling option).

Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey — Price Varies

A “proper” whiskey that pays homage to Conor McGregor’s hometown.

From MMA champion Conor McGregor comes a triple-distilled Irish whiskey (featuring golden grains and vanilla, honey and toasted wood notes) — this whiskey in particular pays homage to MacGregor’s hometown of Dublin & the Crumlin, Dublin 12 neighborhood specifically. It’s the perfect whiskey to try on a cold winter weekend — preferably surrounded by friends. I’ve tried it, and I can vouch for it. Cheers!

Taylor Stitch Ojai Jacket in Waxed Wool — $228

A rugged jacket that only Taylor Stitch can dream up.

Part field jacket and part blazer substitute, the Taylor Stitch Ojai Jacket (made from a handsome waxed wool in a deep olive color) is one of the best men’s winter jackets, and a worthy piece to wear alongside your Heavy Bag Henley.

Wolverine BLVD Cap Toe Boots — $199

Rugged-yet-dressy boots — the perfect encapsulation of all things Wolverine.

If you typically think of more rugged leather boots when you think of Wolverine (like the ones found in this winter style ensemble), then get ready to shift your thinking a bit. The Wolverine BLVD Collection focuses on affordable style and yet high-quality performance & design, including rich leather that’ll age very nicely. More specifically, the dressy-yet-versatile Wolverine BLVD Cap Toe Boots are a shining example of day-to-night style from this lauded brand.

OK, so whenever I get to the end of one of these posts, I always have a tough time picking my favorite — do you feel the same way? From the perfect flannel shirt for winter, right on through to those rugged Wolverine BLVD Cap Toe Boots, I’d say there’s probably something for every taste and budget.  Maybe the Taylor Stitch Ojai Jacket is your go-to pick? Or perhaps it’s the rich Faherty Brand Sun & Waves Cardigan? Of course, we’d be remiss not to mention the excellent versatility of a stylish flannel shirt for winter from a top denim brand. Let me know your thoughts on these picks over on Twitter. Let’s get out there!

It’s the sort of versatile piece you can feel good about wearing on the weekend (atop your favorite henley, preferably also from Taylor Stitch) or as an added layer over a classic fisherman’s sweater. Design details that really make a difference.

This classic overshirt is truly geared to go the distance, what with its brass donut hole buttons that signify that, yes, you can wear this just like a jacket atop a classic Taylor Stitch chambray shirt. And there’s just something about the Burgundy color that gives it some versatility, from pairing with slim chinos to your favorite pair of dark blue denim — that’s what a great overshirt should do, after all. One interior pocket and two front patch flap pockets provide space for your everyday carry essentials (which Taylor Stitch also sells in spades), while the California collar (another classic TS design touch) gives this thing the feel of an office-ready shirt as opposed to one that’s strictly meant for outdoor adventures. Get you a classic overshirt that can do both, as they say. Yes indeed, the Taylor Stitch Explorer’s Shirt  offers up all the versatility and craftsmanship you need this winter, and beyond that. This weekend though, I’m back in New York and excited despite the cold — in addition to a laidback weekend in Brooklyn, I’m venturing into Manhattan today for a very unique reason. Notably, my alma mater, my beloved Michigan State Spartans, are playing in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium to close out this season! It’s going to be a bitterly cold affar (as any college football game at Yankee Stadium should be), but I’m still beyond excited to see my Spartans right here in NYC. Before the game, I’d say a pint or two will be in order at this weekend’s MSU hub, Stan’s Sports Bar. The rest of the weekend, I’ll be getting out and about in Prospect Park (likely wearing some of my favorite boots and a tough waxed trucker jacket) — how about you? Let me know on Twitter, and let’s keep things rolling along in fine form with the rest of today’s Friday Read — cheers!

OK, so here’s something fun if you happen to live in an area where there happens to be a Wild Turkey “Turkey Trot” this year (specifically, Austin, New Orleans or Chicago). Once you complete your run, enjoy a classic Old Fashioned (if you’re over 21!) made using delicious Wild Turkey bourbon. For those at least 21 years of age in Austin, Chicago and New Orleans running at local “Turkey Trots” this week, they can see the barpack in real-life and potentially walk away with one of their own. It’s loaded with a standing bar for mixing, plus Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon, Angostura Bitters, Powell & Mahoney Simple Syrup, glassware, a stirrer and more. It’s seriously cool, it’s almost too good to be true … and it’s only available at a Wild Turkey “Turkey Trot.” Heck, I got to check one out recently, and it was seriously cool. So, make your weekend even more worthwhile with a run and some delicious spirits, ehh?

Deschutes Jubelale Beer — Price Varies

One of your new favorite winter beers, I’d wager. Cheers to the holidays!

While not necessarily a special deal for Black Friday or Thanksgiving weekend, the Deschutes Jubelale is easily one of the best beers for winter (and the holidays in general, for that matter). In fact, you should make it a point to track some down for Thanksgiving! I’ve tested out the beer courtesy of Deschutes these past few weeks, and it seriously delivers. The quality of this beer starts with roasted barley and pale hop blends, among other fine ingredients, and carries through some excellent cold-weather character with rich spice notes and a seasonally friendly color. Can a beer be beautiful? Yes, yes it can — enjoy this at all your holiday parties … just be sure to bring extra for your guests.

Or heck, out on the trail to work off said meal and beers. At least, that’s what the Topo Designs Long-Sleeve Waffle Tee seems to be built for, made with tons of durability and remarkable quality (again, perhaps you’ve seen it on my Instagram). You know what it would wear especially well with? The Tom Beckbe Tensaw Jacket.

Thirsty Monk Trail Monk IPA — Price Varies

An IPA brewed with orange zest for a good (no, great) cause benefitting the outdoors. Photo courtesy of Thirsty Monk.

Here’s the thing about craft beer — if you’re willing to seek it out, you’re going to find excellent local and regional brews in plenty of places. And if you live in or near Portland, Asheville or Denver (three of my favorite cities!), you know the joys of the terrific “Belgian-rooted ales” being produced at Thirsty Monk’s brewpubs. That list includes the new Trail Monk IPA, made with orange peel and zest for a bittersweet zing at the finish. I had the chance to visit the excellent Asheville Downtown location, and I can’t recommend it enough — what’s more, portion of proceeds from sales of Trail Monk will benefit Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation in Asheville, the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative in Denver, and Trailkeepers of Oregon. #OOTD: The Best Way to Wear a Classic Henley for Winter (And Beyond)

If you keep up with the digital pages of your favorite menswear blog (this one!), then you know that we positively love recommending a stylish henley for many a situation — and this crucial piece of menswear is perhaps no more important than during the winter months. The right henley to buy now can in fact be used as a crucial base layer — particularly the stylish indigo henley from Faherty Brand that forms the foundation of this #OOTD. It’s the perfect piece to complement the other gear picks on display here — taken in total, this is a rugged, causal, warm ensemble that I could see working everywhere from a laidback weekend bar outing to a snowy winter hike. Again, it all starts with a great henley, that classic men’s style staple that started as a sporting shirt and has now evolved into the shirt that every guy needs (arguably). So, why does this entire outfit stand on its own? You’ll see why in just a second, but know that we’re teaming up our rugged henley with a classic flannel shirt, durable work pants and a pair of the best men’s boots for winter. It’s all topped off with — naturally — a seriously warm sherpa trucker jacket from Flint and Tinder. Now, let’s unveil the ensemble, shall we? To see how I’m styling a henley this winter, head to my Instagram.

An absolutely unstoppable winter style combo, featuring a rugged henley (of course).

OK, folks — what do we think of the choices for this rugged, casual, exceptionally timeless winter look? To me, the base layer of a stylish henley is what makes it all go — especially one from Faherty Brand, guaranteed to be comfortable and easy to layer. That’s all the better when you consider the stylish flannel shirt we’re wearing atop it, right? And things only get warmer and better-looking from there: The Flint and Tinder Type 3 Sherpa-Lined Jacket really is as good as it gets. It’s the type of jacket that could take you on a brewery tour or through a museum trip, then out to a casual gastropub — the same can be said of the surprisingly versatile Union Work Pants from Iron & Resin.  The entire combo is elevated even further thanks to the tremendous Thorogood Beloit Boots (easily the best leather boots for the season). And your accessories will add some sheen to this outfit if you focus on picking up arguably the perfect casual watch — one that’s going to stand up to the challenge of winter weather and go-anywhere style. You could certainly say the same thing about your American Trench socks, which add another element of comfort and all-day performance. Again, trekking from a gallery to a brewery to drinks has never been so easy. Last but certainly not least, it really will pay off to put on a stylish beanie cap as temperatures continue to drop. Now, with all of that being said … where will this outfit take you? Let me know via The Style Guide Facebook page.
