Style Pick of the Week: Billy Reid Cotton-Linen 5-Pocket Pants – Summer’s Coolest Pair of Pants

Billy Reid menswear review.

Amping up your rotation of summer style essentials hits a new level when you decide to invest even in the best everyday menswear — picks that you can wear frequently, without worrying that they’re versatile enough or well-made to stand up to repeat wear.

In my experience, Billy Reid menswear hits all the right notes if you want luxe-yet-accessible men’s style essentials, ones with a bit of flair and yet plenty of easy-to-wear potential.

What exactly do I mean by that? Well, picture your favorite pair of chinos. Now, merge them with some of the best jeans for men. What do you get? A pair of pants I personally love, the Billy Reid Cotton-Linen 5-Pocket Pants. From sunrise to sunset (and beyond), these premium men’s pants are a major hit in my book, with durability and versatility in spades.

Billy Reid already makes plenty of summer menswear must-haves, particularly one of the best linen shirts, and these five-pocket pants are a nice complement to the award-winning designer’s slightly more casual staple picks.

The Billy Reid Cotton-Linen 5-Pocket Pants (with a blend of 78 percent cotton for structure and 22 percent linen for breathability) boast a stylish slim fit, but in my experience, Billy Reid slim-fit pants aren’t overly slim — they’re very nearly just right.

Billy Reid men's pants.

The Billy Reid Cotton-Linen 5-Pocket Pants feature durable antique brass hardware, right down to the brass tack button that gets an embossed Billy Reid stripe treatment. It’s the sort of small detail that makes these pants worth the higher price tag than your typical pair of jeans, chinos or even linen pants (the Billy Reid Cotton-Linen 5-Pocket Pants clock in at $198).

The garment-wash process gives them a soft handfeel right out of the box, which is ideal — from Oxford shirts to one of the best pocket T-shirts, you’ll want to work these pants into your warm-weather menswear rotation ASAP. That’s the sort of style upgrade you really can’t beat, and that’s why I trust Billy Reid with my summer style must-haves.

The Thursday Buy: Get Casually Cool with a Retro Buck Mason Camp Collar Shirt This Season

There are tried-and-true staples in every guy’s rotation of the best menswear, be it a trusty T-shirt, a stylish polo or even a laidback, rugged henley. But it’s nice to take a slight style swerve off the beaten pat every once in a while by embracing a style that’s retro yet modern, fresh and ever so slightly on trend without overdoing it.

In my experience, at least in the summer heat of Brooklyn, you can check off all those boxes perfectly with one of the best camp collar shirts for men. And this season, I’ve found that the best camp collar (or Cuba collar) shirts for guys come from one of my favorite retailers: The great folks at Buck Mason, a West Coast brand with a flair for modern takes on iconic styles (like the shirt in question today).

The camp collar shirt dates back well before modern fashion runways, as the style was worn by field workers in the heat of Cuba and included additional details like front hip pockets. The fabric and fit was breezy and cooling, the lay-flat collar also helped with breathability and the overall impact was easygoing yet useful.

Today, the best camp collar shirts check off many of those same boxes, and for my money’s worth, the Buck Mason Draped Linen Camp Collar Shirt is among the best of the bunch.

Men's camp collar shirts.

It’s somewhere between a polo and a T-shirt — perhaps dressier than both items, but as comfortable and easy to wear as your favorite Buck Mason tee. It works wonders with chino shorts and canvas sneakers, yet the best camp collar men’s shirts are also wearable with linen trousers and leather loafers. It can be dressed up or dressed down simply on its own (no blazer needed), which is more than I’ve found with even the best T-shirts, for instance.

In short, any #OOTD that might call for a classic polo can reasonably work with a style move like the Buck Mason Draped Linen Camp Collar Shirt. And lest you think this camp collar is too “off the wall,” consider the fact that it comes in a crisp, timeless color like Dark Navy.

While the lay-flat collar is a change of pace — and it’s a detail that took me some getting used to — this stylish men’s short-sleeve shirt works just about as well as anything in your off-duty wardrobe, from BBQs to beach days and beyond.

Rest easy knowing the linen-blend fabric is ultra-soft and comfortable in the heat, the fit is relaxed without being overly baggy — an XL works on my 6’2″ frame — and the style points are tough to top with one of the best camp collar shirts for men this season. Try it on for size and unlock a new level of summer style points.

See Now, Buy Now: Randolph Engineering Makes (Arguably) the Best USA-Made Sunglasses on the Market

Randolph Engineering sunglasses review.

When it comes down to it, they just don’t make ’em like they used to — “it,” in this case, being durable sunglasses crafted with care in America. And yet, in my experience, one brand in particular rises above the rest, and that’s Randolph Engineering, makers of some of the very best USA-made sunglasses.

The company is an old-school one, developing military-grade and military-approved shades on time-tested equipment in Massachusetts. The story only gets better from there when it comes to some of the best sunglasses for men.

Best USA-made sunglasses for men.

And in fact, some of that equipment used dates back decades, as the brand was originally founded by machinists Jan Waszkiewicz and Stanley Zaleski — the very developers of that same equipment, prior to the formal launching of the brand itself.

The company won its first military-spec contract for men’s aviator sunglasses in 1983, and the brand has grown by leaps and bounds since then. It’s an admirable story that I can’t help but love — and in my experience, the brand’s men’s sunglasses deliver the goods in terms of heritage and history.

These days, Randolph Engineering proudly toes the line between rugged functionality and modern style, which is a tricky balance to strike — and yet one that they achieve admirably.

Case in point? Styles like the Randolph Engineering Class A Aviator, which boasts a distinctive and versatile shape, plus the option to select from multiple lens and frame colors. Four lens size options provide versatility based on the shape of your own face, too.

And for good measure, the design is well worth the price tag (less expensive than designer frames, more expensive than classic Ray-Ban Aviators, and packed with tons of history, to boot). This isn’t the last time you’ll be reading a Randolph Engineering review on the blog, but for now, get used to — and get acquainted with — the brand that makes your new favorite sunglasses.

The Tuesday Steal: Save More Than 20 Percent On this Howler Brothers Shirt at Bespoke Post

Best Western-style shirt for men.

If you’ve been reading my Brooklyn style blog, you know I’m all about the idea of finding a one-stop shop for the best men’s style essentials, and then keeping a frequent eye on that same retailer. In this instance, the retailer happens to be Bespoke Post.

In addition to its own line of menswear essentials, the NYC-based upstart stocks and sells some of the coolest menswear and gear around, including a few stellar picks from a familiar Austin company, Howler Brothers, which happens to be the subject of several Howler Brothers reviews here on the site. That’s where today’s post dives into a must-have summer shirt, one that happens to be 25 percent off right now.

Howler Brothers Gaucho Snapshirt review.

When it comes to the Howler Brothers Gaucho Western Snapshirt, you’re getting what the brand calls a shirt with a “modern touch to vintage Western wear,” and they’re absolutely correct. In my experience, the Howler Brothers Gaucho Western Snapshirt lives up to that billing and then some.

It starts with a durable cotton-polyester-spandex build that’s more performance-minded than other Western shirts (even if your main focus on performance happens to be manning the grill or fetching another cold beer).

The real kicker with the Howler Brothers Gaucho Western Snapshirt, though, is the use of inventive and distinctive chest embroidery, which gives it that sense of vintage style.

Snap chest pockets and front snap hardware nail down the Western shirt vibe, and again, in my opinion, it doesn’t hurt that the versatile Howler Brothers Gaucho Western Snapshirt is 25 percent off via my pals in the Bespoke Post sale section.

See Now, Buy Now: This Aether Apparel Lightweight Crew Is a Rugged Summer Classic

There are times when you might not know what you need in your summer wardrobe until you come across a situation where, well, a certain pick could come in mighty handy. Take one of the best crewneck sweatshirts for men.

It’s a casual must-have worn under trucker jackets and atop flannel shirts in the colder months, but the right crewneck sweatshirt can prove extremely useful on chilly summer nights, too.

Think of it this way: If ever you’ve felt like you could use an extra layer on a cool summer evening, yet have come up short, consider it a valuable solution. And this, my friends, is where the Aether Apparel Solstice Lightweight Crew enters your wardrobe.

It comes from the technical masters at Los Angeles-based Aether Apparel, who founded their brand by focusing on gear that was stylish enough for the city and technical enough for the great outdoors.

Aether Apparel menswear review.

In my experience, the brand has succeeded on both accounts, which you can see if ever you’ve checked out the Aether Apparel Archive Sale or even worn one of the brand’s adventure-minded accessories, like a pair of the best sunglasses for men.

Elsewhere, picks like the Aether Apparel Solstice Lightweight Crew fit the bill nicely, from the lightweight French Terry cotton-blend construction to the garment-dyed finishing processing. The fact that it also comes in a trio of neutral, versatile shades (seen above and below) is a major benefit, too.

That process gives the Aether Apparel Solstice Lightweight Crew a lived-in feel right out of the box, something that in my personal experience is a great thing to have in your rotation of lightweight sweatshirts. It’s easy enough to throw on over a T-shirt, yet will maintain its shape enough to wear beneath a bomber jacket on especially brisk or rainy summer mornings (or nights, or afternoons, for that matter).

And the Aether Apparel Solstice Lightweight Crew should also add warmth to your #OOTD without weighing you down, another benefit of finding an outdoor essential for the summer months.

Like the rest of the Aether Apparel line, the Aether Apparel Solstice Lightweight Crew comes at a premium price, but in my opinion, the outfitter lives up to its stylish-yet-technical, high-quality reputation. That’s a great thing to have in your summer wardrobe, my friends.

The Sunday Sale: These Lug Sole Blundstone Boots are Up for Grabs at Huckberry

Blundstone lug sole boots for men.

Just when you thought you had your rotation of menswear essentials all figured out, when you thought your rotation of the best men’s summer gear couldn’t possibly get any more built out, well, perhaps something unexpected hit your calendar. That could mean a last-minute getaway, an outdoor retreat, a day hike or potentially just the prospect of a trip to a new city with lots of miles on foot ahead.

Best Chelsea boots for men.

In that case, a pair of the best boots for men can still come in handy, even as the mercury climbs this summer. And to be more specific, the Blundstone #2238 Lug Sole Boots are fit for just about anything mentioned above, and then some — and they’re on sale right now at Huckberry.

These rugged men’s boots for summer are built just like the Blundstone boots you know and love, with all the tough added features you need for excursions on and off trail.

For starters, they’re made with water-resistant leather in sleek, versatile black, while a polyurethane midsole ensures comfort and rebound. The real kicker, though, is the rugged lug outsole, which delivers maximum traction while absorbing impact.

Blundstone men's boots review.

The Blundstone Lug Sole Boots are a heavy hitter, a pair of boots meant for work or play, whether teamed with canvas pants or with light wash denim for a touch of off-duty, high-low contrast. The Comfort Arch footbed delivers a further sense of comfort and all-day performance, something I personally love about my Blundstone boots.

In my experience, Blundstone boots are tough yet supremely comfortable, made better with age and with each wear. And seeing as they’re on sale right now at Huckberry for 20 percent off, in a range of sizes, that’s about as good as it gets as far as the best boots for men are concerned this season.

Style Pick of the Week: Mott and Bow Warren Jeans – The Perfect Casual Men’s Jeans for Summer

There are certain summer style essentials that are commonplace, true must-haves: The right pair of stretch chino shorts, the proper T-shirt for breezy casual style, and so on. Other pieces, like a pair of the best men’s jeans, can be tougher to wear — and even tougher to phase out of your wardrobe.

Take it from me: I’m a huge fan of wearing the best jeans for men as often as I can, usually with rugged chukka boots or high-top sneakers. And those jeans tend to hail from Mott and Bow, a brand that in my experience, delivers the goods in terms of utility, design and dependability.

Yet when the high heat of summer is too daunting, I’ve found a helpful solution: Rocking a pair of Mott and Bow men’s jeans — at least, when the temperature is within reason — proves stylish, versatile and yes, a nice move for everyone who simply can’t get enough of the best blue jeans for men.

Mott and Bow men's jeans review.

I’d wager it’s not the first time you’ve come across a Mott and Bow review here on the blog, as I’ve been a longtime fan of the NYC-based denim upstart, which boasts decades of family experience at the top of its business (founder Alejandro Chanin grew up around the industry, after all).

And that means the Mott and Bow Warren Jeans are well-designed, stylish, easily wearable and even lightweight enough to wear in the summer months (again, within reason — proceed accordingly!). Your new favorite blue jeans for men, delivered in a pleasing and summer-friendly medium wash, feature a stretch factor of 18 percent.

That stretch makes ’em easy to wear on the go — with short-sleeve buttondowns, with one of your favorite polos or with a USA-made T-shirt.

Note that they feature a mid-weight fabric, so they’ll prove more sturdy than jeans from a fast-fashion retailer — and they’ll prove an apt choice on slightly cooler summer nights, too. With waist sizing up to 40 inches and a reliable slim fit, the Mott and Bow Warren Jeans check all the proper boxes in matters of seasonal style and comfort: Unlock your new go-to pair of blue jeans today, my friends.

The Friday Read: Trekking West to Arizona with Hamilton Watches

In my many freelance writing pursuits — covering everything from spirits to menswear to watches, trekking to Mexico with 1800 Tequila , visiting Boston with Joseph Abboud and more — I value tried-and-true essentials for my #OOTD.

Essentials like one of the best watches for men, of course, which just so happened to be the focus of my latest press trip. Suffice to say, staying on time in style, with rugged functionality top of mind, is the name of the game this Friday (and beyond), my friends. And it was a truly one-of-a-kind experience, which you very well might know if you follow me on Instagram.

The experience in question? Earlier this week, I had the chance to journey West with none other than Hamilton Watches, the legendary American producer of military and field timepieces (and an innovator in the timekeeping space since its founding in 1892).

The experience was unlike any other, as myself and fellow watch writers took the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical and Hamilton Khaki Field Expedition (this time on a new NATO strap) out into the field and the high heat of the Arizona desert.

On tap, aside from luxurious accommodations at the Andaz Scottsdale Resort and Bungalows? A thrilling desert off-road vehicle ride while wearing our Hamilton Watches timepieces, followed by a breezy and at times speedy river raft ride down the Salt River (once again, our Hamilton Watches timepieces proved mighty useful).

Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical review.

The trip was capped off in thrilling fashion with a sunrise hot air balloon ride — and yes, once again, we trusted our Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical and Hamilton Khaki Field Expedition watches (my timepiece of choice) to get the job done.

Best field watches for men.

All the while, each of us found just about everything from Hamilton Watches to be tough, durable, easy to read in terms of legibility and timekeeping, and ready to stand up to the elements — be it dust, water or a hot day’s breeze. They even outfitted us with durable Hamilton caps, crucial in the Arizona desert.

I’ll have much more to come on Hamilton Watches via my many freelance writing pursuits, but for the price and the performance, this is a USA-made watch brand you can surely trust when you need it the most.

And of course, you can find Hamilton Watches and more at sites like Huckberry, which is also a tough thing to pass up. For powering your weekend, look to one of the best men’s watches — and look forward to two weekend style posts incoming on this very blog. As always, thanks for reading and stay stylish!

The Thursday Buy: These Lightweight Men’s Chinos from Relwen & Huckberry are a Summer Essential

Best lightweight chinos for men.

What are your go-to menswear essentials for summer, the pieces you can’t live without? There’s a time and a place for laidback swim trunks and a USA-made T-shirt, just as there’s a time and a place for some polish — with one of the best men’s polos and a pair of the best lightweight chinos from Huckberry, for instance.

It can be a tricky balance to figure out, especially when it comes time to stay cool and stylish in the heat for men, but not if you’ve got the right men’s style picks for summer close at hand.

And by that, I mean today’s featured pick: The Relwen Flyweight Flex Chinos live up to their name and then some, delivering an air of polish and comfort as the mercury rises.

Relwen men's chinos review.

Relwen rises above the fray in the menswear world, using military and workwear inspiration to craft modern updates to the classics, from a rugged linen workshirt to the aforementioned lightweight stretch chinos. That’s the sort of balance I appreciate, with a respect for heritage styles meeting the use of modern technology. When it comes to the Relwen Flyweight Flex Chinos, the use of a lightweight cotton — blended with spandex — gives them a light-as-air feel and a nice hint of stretch, in my experience.

Best chinos for men to buy now.

Plus, the Relwen Flyweight Flex Chinos boast a classic slim-straight cut, the kind that flatters most frames and is neither too constricting nor overly relaxed. I’ve found that the Relwen Flyweight Flex Chinos sit nicely atop everything from Red Wing Heritage Iron Ranger boots to Clarks chukka boots to my preferred canvas high-top sneakers from Chuck Taylor in the summer months.

Relwen Flyweight Flex Chinos review.

Durable details also set the Relwen Flyweight Flex Chinos apart from the pack, like a gusseted crotch and pleated knees — all the better for comfortable range of motion on the go. A sturdy snap button and hard-working zipper hardware also lends a further air of durability to the Relwen Flyweight Flex Chinos.

Add in the fact that they come in a range of neutral, earthy and stylish colors, and you’ve found a pair of pants worth stocking up on before the high heat of summer hits. If that sounds ideal to you, then your new favorite pair of chinos awaits via Huckberry and Relwen.

See Now, Buy Now: This Taylor Stitch Organic Cotton Polo is a Surefire Daily Style Winner

Best summer polos for men.

It seems that lately here on the blog, the best polos for men have been a prime topic of conversation. In my experience, that’s as it should be: When done the right way, as with the Taylor Stitch Organic Cotton Polo at the top of the page, the style is a timeless classic.

We’re talking a stylish polo for men that’s more elevated than a T-shirt, more breezy than even one of the best Oxford shirts, and wearable with everything from the best linen pants to chino shorts (at least, in my experience). And the Taylor Stitch Organic Cotton Polo fits the bill quite nicely, seeing as it’s made from a brand obsessed with putting a modern, well-fitting and distinctive spin on throwback staples.

It helps that this polo shirt is also updated with eco-friendly organic cotton, and the laundry list of features carries on from there. The Taylor Stitch Organic Cotton Polo is also available in a Bleached Natural Stripe option, plus a deep Indigo Stripe, but the Washed Indigo iteration is my personal favorite.

That color gives it wearability with everything from dark tan chinos to light grey linen trousers and even navy dress pants (don’t forget sleek leather loafers).

And as with other Taylor Stitch men’s shirts, the Taylor Stitch Organic Cotton Polo comes in the brand’s excellent chest sizing options — a tailored fit that’s not too tight, and is often flattering (especially on my 6’2″ frame, the 44″ chest size works particularly well).

The two-button placket is more relaxed than somewhat dressier polos, but with the Taylor Stitch Organic Cotton Polo, it’s as if the brand has simply upgraded your favorite T-shirt in a more polished way. When casual-yet-elevated style scenarios come calling, reach for the breezy, well-made Taylor Stitch Organic Cotton Polo — it’s a new daily summer staple, my friends.
