If you’re wondering why we’re here in today’s Friday Read at my daily menswear blog talking about the Kentucky Derby, well, keep on scrolling and welcome to the ride, my friends. Now, if you follow me on Instagram, you assuredly know it’s been quite the ride these past few weeks.
I took a quick hiatus from last week’s regular Friday Read, and from my daily writing duties at sites like Maxim, to head out to Las Vegas with the TAO Hospitality Group to review the stunning new TAO Dayclub — I previously visited the incredibly cool TAO Mohegan Sun property for Maxim, and this was another stellar trip opportunity! That brings me, of course, to the Kentucky Derby — quite literally, in fact. I’ll be onsite for a lifetime chance to check out the iconic Run for the Roses, and I’ll be there as part of my “day job,” believe it or not. Woodford Reserve might be the official Bourbon of the Kentucky Derby, but I’m attending to taste and visit HIRSCH Whiskey in Bardstown, Kentucky — along with Derby Day festivities, of course!
Naturally, you can get a taste of HIRSCH Whiskey sent to your door in the meantime via Drizly if you’d like to try out yet another Derby Day Whiskey, but in the meantime, I’ll have more insight for Maxim next week. All of which leads me into the rest of today’s Friday Read for your weekend perusal and shopping enjoyment. I’ll be suited up on Saturday, so be sure to follow along with my Instagram. Cheers!
Now, Taylor Stitch menswear might not be the first thing on your mind as seersucker suits and the like take center stage this coming weekend. That being said, here’s your weekly (if not daily!) reminder to check out what the brand is doing, from substantial yet soft T-shirts to sturdy denim jackets and some of the coolest accessories you can shake a stick at — go give Taylor Stitch another look if you need a spring or summer refresh.
Another area in which to focus on a spring or summer refresh? Your basics rotation, hence why I wrote all about the best men’s henleys over at SPY.com, featuring favorites from Buck Mason and many more. It’s a list of the best of the best, in my humble opinion, and I recommend you hop to it to add a new short-sleeve henley or three into your life.
Here’s another style pick on a budget to get you thinking spring and summer upgrades. Over on the blog just earlier this week, I told you all about a great way to save on sneakers from Bespoke Post. The magic — and the deal — can be found within that post. Let’s get right to it and add to cart, my friends.
That’s going to wrap up today’s Friday Read, all in the name of enjoying the one and only Kentucky Derby — and of course, some finely crafted HIRSCH Whiskey. I can think of no better way to enjoy the weekend. We’ll see you out there and online, my friends!
There’s something to be said for shopping affordable style essentials, sure, but what about when you want to amp things up a notch in an uncommon category, like the best men’s henleys? That’s where a premium American menswear designer comes into play: The new Billy Reid Melange Stripe Henley delivers on all fronts, and in a way that’s more affordable than you might think. Sure, $88 is quite a bit to spend on a henley, but trust your humble Brooklyn style writer when I say it does indeed pay off. That makes it a mighty fine Tuesday Steal in my opinion.
You already know Billy Reid as a brand that makes ramped-up, tailored style essentials like the best men’s blazer for spring and summer, not to mention tried-and-true, much-loved picks like the famed Billy Reid Bond Peacoat. That’s quality and design integrity and style you can trust, which carries over to even the most seemingly simple basics. The henley is a solid menswear go-to in its own right, and the Billy Reid Melange Stripe Henley is another perfect example of how the Alabama-based Reid truly levels things up.
The fabric is a cotton-poly blend, made in Peru in some nicely textured colors like a dusty Burnt Orange, as well as classics like straightforward Grey. $88 certainly is quite a bit to pay for your seemingly standard henley, but it’s an investment that pays off in the end. You’ll want to wear this one all summer long.
Cruise through the pages of The Style Guide any day of the week, and you just might find me singing the praises of a rugged menswear must-have: One of the best men’s henleys is the right layer to take you from the depths of winter into spring, starting right now. A rugged thermal henley can work wonders in plenty of different ways in your wardrobe, be it as a base layer with a tough waxed trucker jacket and the best leather boots, or worn on its own with dark indigo jeans as temperatures (slowly) rise. That’s what we’ve got on our hands today with the Flint and Tinder Surplus Long-Sleeve Henley, another A-plus menswear staple to carry you from early March into spring, properly outfitted.
It’s part of a crop of the best spring style essentials new into the well-stocked digital confines of San Francisco-based Huckberry, and your next spring look is going to better for it when you snag the Flint and Tinder Surplus Long-Sleeve Henley. The Surplus Collection from F&T blends hard-wearing materials like Cordura nylon with cotton for stretch, durability and comfort, and it all comes together in this fittingly military-inspired henley. Note the custom F&T buttons, matching the shade of the henley for a low-key, functional finish. Of course, that’s not all you’ll find with one of the best henleys for men.
Like most other Huckberry gear picks, the Flint and Tinder Surplus Long-Sleeve Henley is priced right for the quality and utility — it’ll run you $68 at Huckberry. That’s certainly more than a bargain henley or a standard cotton undershirt, but this Huckberry henley has more substantial fabric and wearability than something on the cheaper side of the equation. A contrast placket and stitching really lends itself to the military surplus inspiration behind the rugged and durable Flint and Tinder Surplus Long-Sleeve Henley, which is never a bad thing to have in your wardrobe. Before you throw on your trusty spring chore coat or denim jacket, make sure the Flint and Tinder Surplus Long-Sleeve Henley is your base layer of choice.
My friends, welcome back to another edition of The Friday Read, your guide to the latest and greatest menswear and gear for your weekend. I don’t know about you, but I’ve certainly got rugged menswear top of mind this weekend, and for a couple reasons. In dealing with the heat in NYC and Michigan (as part of a family vacation I’m taking Up North!), I’ve been adding some items from the Filson New Arrivals section to my wish list — I’m not sure about you, but I’m definitely coveting some of the best fall menswear right about now. Do you have any favorites from the venerable Pacific Northwest retailer?
That brings me to another point, and one that’s especially fitting given the Filson heritage of making durable outdoor gear. I’ve got some essentials packed with me this weekend to head “Up North,” as we call the northern Lower Peninsula of my home state of Michigan. It’s my first time back in a year, and quite a bit has changed since on, well, all fronts. I can’t wait to see family (and some college friends prior to that!), and I’ll be outfitted the right way all the while (head to Filson to outfit yourself for the season ahead, while we’re here). Beyond that, I’ll highlight a few of my favorite seasonal picks below. And one last word to the wise: If you prefer your menswear shopping with a side of music and craft beer, as I do, then I’d head over to my music-menswear-craft beer newsletter, The Style Guide In Brief, which features a bit of all three (and Saturday’s will take a look at the new album from The Killers. one of my favorite bands, in particular). The choice is all yours, but I don’t think you can go wrong. In the meantime, here’s the rest of your Friday Read. Cheers!
Now, it’s not every day that one of the best menswear sales comes around. And it’s not every single day that Aether Apparel, makers of some of the best rugged performance menswear out there, drops a sale that’ll make you sit up and take notice. The brand, which I talked about here in a piece on the best men’s gear for spring, is offering up to 60 percent off jackets, sweaters, vests, tees, pants, bags, and more formen (and women), now through August 15th. It’s a sale packed with quality essentials that’s truly not to be missed. Start shopping!
Speaking of great deals on great gear, how’s this for one of the best new menswear collections around? Just as we talked about earlier with Filson, it’s high time to start planning, slowly but surely, for early fall. Head over to Grayers, makers of classic chinos, tailored Oxford shirts and super-soft flannel shirts, to get some of the best early fall gear right now. It’s hard to pass up rugged henleys, easy-to-layer shirting and timeless chinos, right? There’s no wrong way to go with Grayers New Arrivals, in my opinion.
Speaking of rugged henleys, here’s yet another way to outfit yourself in style this season. Over at Fatherly, a really great parenting and lifestyle site for new dads and guys of any age, I wrote all about the best henleys for early fall from some of my favorite brands, including Buck Mason and seven other standout favorites. Shop accordingly, my friends.
So, that’s where we’ll leave things in today’s Friday Read — that gives you more than enough time to shop for the weekend, does it not? I’ll give you one last recommendation before Friday kicks off in earnest. You’re going to want to keep your grooming on-point from summer into fall, and you should do that by checking out my guide to the best natural deodorant from American Provenance over in this blog post. Keep it classy and sharp, folks. Thanks for reading, and be sure to check out tomorrow’s Style Pick of the Week!
Think of it this way: As we all ease back into the world, you’re going to need casual menswear staples that are cooler than a T-shirt but not as buttoned-up as a dress shirt. One of the best men’s henleys is here to fill that gap quite handily. Now, Faherty Brand has something of a specialty in this area — witness the fact that it makes both stretch Oxford shirts (to wear with your favorite blazer) as well as rugged flannel shirts (to layer atop a Faherty Brand henley when the weather takes a turn). And although it’s more casual than both of those categories, the Faherty Brand Short-Sleeve Henley isn’t to be trifled with. It’s as solidly built as it gets, and the fact that itretails for $78 is a nice bonus, too.
Like all of the best short-sleeve henleys for men, it meets some crucial criteria. What exactly are those criteria? I’m glad you asked, my friends. The Faherty Brand Short-Sleeve Henley is made from a blend of cotton and polyester, both ideal for comfort and breathability on hot summer days. It also features a more relaxed, rather than skintight, fit. This is also ideal for breezy summer style. Faherty built this shirt from the ground up with all the proper considerations in mind.
Folks, the time to really start dressin’ for summer is here, and I’ve got just the ensemble you need now. Past #OOTD entries have covered a little bit of everything as far as rugged gear is concerned, from how to wear chukka boots this summer to how to layer a shirt jacket, and we’re going to keep that theme going with my guide on how to wear a henley this summer. It might seem simple on the surface, but we’ve got one of the coolest suede jackets along for the ride for some lightweight layering, plus your favorite pair of new chinos and much more. Think of it like the ideal #OOTD to wear when the occasion calls for classic, rugged style — perhaps a casual night out with “the guys,” as they say, or a long-awaited reunion with family and friends. When you want to channel laidback, casual cool, I think these style essentials are going to work perfectly.
Oh, and that’s not all we’ve got. I’m also including one of the best beers for summer from Brooklyn’s Threes Brewing, the kind that you can bring along to that backyard or patio hang — Threes delivers to more than 20 states, and you can use the code BEAU10 to get 10 percent off your order. So, to recap: Fresh summer beer, a rugged henley and much more. What’s not to love about that, right? Cheers to the season ahead, folks.
The Chukka Boots: Rhodes Footwear Tyler Chukka Boots, $175— Head back to Huckberry to get a pair of the best men’s chukka boots on the market, with durable style for days and days on end.
The Socks: Mack Weldon Extended Cashmere Crew Socks, $68— Splurge on your feet this summer with a pair of lightweight, comfortable, stylish cashmere socks. Mack Weldon won’t let you down.
The Watch: Handley Watches Muse Watch, $230— If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve surely seen me raving about the rugged appeal of Handley Watches. This stylish rubber-strap watch is casual, durable and yet perfectly stylish alongside this #OOTD.
The Summer Beer: Threes Brewing Vliet Pilsner, $16 (Four-Pack)— When you show up to that BBQ or backyard hang, bring a fresh craft beer everyone will enjoy: The Threes Brewing Vliet Pilsner is one of my favorite beers for everyday sipping, and it’s even better that you can stock up on multiple four-packs using the code BEAU10 for 10 percent off your order of $50 or more online. Cheers to that, folks!
Are you all the more ready for summer now with this versatile #OOTD? I know I sure am, and I couldn’t be more excited about all the stylish potential this ensemble has, starting right from the get-go with rugged henley from PAIGE Denim. To me, that henley pairs up absolutely perfectly with that lightweight leather jacket from Taylor Stitch, and it gets even better when you throw on a pair of lightweight chinos to cement the casual cool and polish of this look. Keep your footwear on point with a pair of the best men’s chukka boots, which just so happen to be priced quite nicely at under $200.
You’re also keeping your summer style on point in lightweight fashion with a pair of stylish cashmere socks from Mack Weldon, the kind that won’t cause your feet to overheat. And your accessories are also going to get the job done in style, including a stylish rubber-strap watch from your new favorite watch brand, Virginia-based Handley Watches. To wrap it all up, haul your daily carry with the Filson Dryden Brief, then be sure to stock up on plenty of the best beer for summer from Threes Brewing (and remember: You can and should use the code BEAU10 for 10 percent off your order of $50). It’s all coming together, folks. Cheers!
What if I told you there was a way to get the best men’s henley in your shopping cart and in your summer wardrobe right now? It’s true, and with summer ramping up in quick succession, that’s why you’re going to want to stop by Free Fly Apparel ASAP for the Free Fly Heritage Short-Sleeve Henley. That’s right: A short-sleeve henley. Ditch the extra fabric and keep your long-sleeve henley in the closet, because a rugged short-sleeve henley, as we’ve talked about in the past here on the blog, is every bit as essential to keep in your rotation as, say, one of the best men’s T-shirts. The short-sleeve henley looks good on every guy, it’s a casual step up from a T-shirt that looks even cooler than you might imagine, and yes, the Free Fly Heritage Short-Sleeve Henley is the one to buy now.
If you want to lighten up your knitwear and get around with style and functionality in mind, there’s hardly a better way to go about it than with the Free Fly Heritage Short-Sleeve Henley. Free Fly, if you’re not familiar, focuses on bamboo fabric blends to craft everything from hooded sweatshirts to stretch shorts and versatile pants, all at fair prices (the Free Fly Heritage Short-Sleeve Henley retails for $49.95 at Free Fly).
An affordable and functional henley that looks great with plenty of casual summer style staples.
You won’t often find such a stellar henley for under $50, especially not one that comes in a versatile range of colors, from Black to the Light Heather Grey shown above. And about that innovative fabric blend: Your new favorite henley is made from a stretch-filled, breathable blend of 50 percent viscose from bamboo and 50 percent cotton. Plus, you get UPF 50+ sun protection, which could make this the best henley to wear outdoors this season (just make sure you get sunscreen on those arms).
These are deals that can’t be beat, especially if you’re a fan of the NYC-based brand’s updated takes on classic menswear staples. That’s what makes the Bonobos Jetsetter Long-Sleeve Henley so essential, seeing as it’s available in a range of neutral colors (from Navy Blazer to White) while also retaining that classic Bonobos quality and attention to detail.
Pick up this rugged-yet-refined henley in Charcoal for ideal winter layering and laidback style.
Of course, this piece is one of the best henleys for men for a reason, and it’s all the better that the price tag now drops below $50. If I were you, I’d get at least two, then pair them with ease alongside everything from tapered Bonobos joggers to classic Bonobos chinos. But what exactly separates the Bonobos Jetsetter Long-Sleeve Henley from the pack? It’s simple really, and it starts with Peruvian cotton that’s been blended with sustainable REFIBRA lyocell for a soft handfeel and plenty of eco-conscious style (it’s a blend of upcycled cotton and wood pulp). This is a rugged henley for men that can go just about anywhere you want it to go, whether you layer it under your favorite winter blazer for a Zoom meeting during the week or team it with the aforementioned tapered Bonobos joggers for cozy weekend style and comfort. And if you feel like mixing in, say, classic men’s blue jeans and a refined cashmere cardigan, well, you can certainly make it happen with the Bonobos Jetsetter Long-Sleeve Henley. It’s selling fast, and at a discount like that (again, 30 percent off at Bonobos), it’s not hard to see why. Make it yours today.
A rugged henley in a cool color for standout functionality and warm, cozy style.
If you’re still struggling to wake up from your post-Christmas hibernation, I’ve got just the ticket when it comes to what to wear for the rest of the weekend (and perhaps the holidays): Make it one of the best men’s henleys, available via a great price from the good folks at Bespoke Post. In fact, make it your go-to option when you don’t know what to wear on a cloudy, snowy weekend. To that point: When the weather is gloomy, well, that’s when to throw on a richly colored henley with classic styling potential. Again, the Roamers Fenwood Henley gets the job done, and that’s why it’s today’s Style Pick of the Week. It could be the opportune time to use that Bespoke Post gift card or put that holiday cash to good use, because you’ll hardly find a better henley under $100 (heck, it’s well below the century mark — just $65!). This particular henley delivers everything you could want in a classic base layer, including the use of hemp and organic cotton fabric for easy layering. Talk about a basic that’s not quite so basic, ehh?
A well-made henley available for a great price at Bespoke Post.
The three-button placket is classic and visually interesting, making it so that you can rock this rugged henley beneath a classic denim jacket or a waxed field coat as easily as you can layer it underneath your favorite chambray shirt. If you feel like taking the Roamers Fenwood Henley for a spin underneath a charcoal blazer, then that’s all well and good, too (just add some faded slim denim for an expertly casual vibe). And if it seems like a henley is just a little too basic, well, know that every guy looks good in one — perhaps it’s the throwback-inspired style or the silhouette’s sporting heritage roots, but it’s a timeless classic. It also helps that the Roamers Fenwood Henley is ready to be worn with slim joggers for a Saturday at home, or else underneath a waxed trucker jacket with slim black jeans as you step out to grab brewery to-go beers. When you find a classic piece that can do all of that, and for a price under $100, that’s one you’ve got to go snap up ASAP.
You know it on the calendar and in your heart: The cold weather calls for one of the best men’s henleys, without a doubt about it. And my friends, the American Giant Waffle Henley is one of the best American-made style picks you can get right now, with plenty of warmth and style to go around. If you’ve read the blog, you know that American Giant shot to fame on the strength of pieces like the American Giant Classic Full-Zip Hoodie, so when you really need to get the job done on cold winter mornings, it never hurts to add the American Giant Waffle Henley to your layering rotation. Heck, it’s a perfectly rugged piece for casual style as well, but as a warm base layer, it delivers the goods. 100 percent cotton waffle fabric and custom-made ribbed cuffs and a ribbed collar add maximum durability for layering under the aforementioned hoodie or a tough canvas workwear jacket, too. Still with me? Let’s keep on rolling.
It’s the fabric that really makes the difference with this tough henley.
This classic men’s henley comes in a range of versatile and neutral colors, including limited-edition offerings like the Oxblood colorway shown at the top of the page. The 12.5oz fabric weight used in the American Giant Waffle Henley makes it hearty and hard-wearing, meaning you can use it as a base layer underneath a shirt jacket or even a peacoat for a blend of high-low style. It retails for a pretty agreeable price ($100 on the dot at American Giant), meaning you can stock up on multiple shades of this rugged henley if you feel so inclined. And with just about week left until Christmas, well, consider adding it to your holiday wish list (or fulfilling someone else’s!). Cheers to winter layering, my friends.
