Style Pick of the Week: Filson Ballistic Nylon Duffel Backpack Hybrid

Get out there and explore with this rugged everyday carry essential in tow.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, step right up — one of the best everyday bags is yours for the taking, and it’s coming at you via Pacific Northwest heritage retailer Filson, makers of some of the best gear for guys (period). In fact, you can (and should) head on over to Huckberry to pick up your new favorite adventure bag — ’tis the season for socially distanced strolls and grueling (but not too grueling!) day hikes, right? Note that you can also get this rugged backpack via Filson itself — you can’t go wrong either way.  And if you’re more of a city commuter type versus one to get out and about in the backwoods, then the Filson Ballistic Nylon Duffel Hybrid is still the absolute perfect way to go if you’re in search of one of the best everyday bags around. It’s the kind of two-for-one bag that’s tough to find these days, and it’s even tougher to find one as well-made as this Filson option. If you thought of Filson mainly as a brand to wear outdoors when it’s cold out, think again — although they make rugged winter gear like flannel shirts, the Filson Ballistic Nylon Duffel Hybrid to me screams summer adventures. It all starts with the right construction and the right materials. For one, it helps that this tough backpack (or is it a duffel bag??) is made from tear and abrasion-resistant ballistic nylon fabric, all the better to stand up to dust, dirt and the elements on the trail.

SHOP: The Filson Ballistic Nylon Duffel Hybrid

One of three excellent color options for this tough hybrid bag.

It really does get better, though — as the name would indicate, this rugged everyday bag can be carried at your side, across your shoulder or as a backpack. Name another rugged outdoor bag that just so happens to be versatile enough for the city? It’s also got enough room for your laptop via a padded interior sleeve, and a water-resistant lined section offers a place to store wet gear (maybe pack one of the best men’s swimsuits if you come across a watering hole out there?). The great thing is, this tough Filson bag doesn’t sacrifice style points, either. The Filson Ballistic Nylon Duffel Hybrid comes in colors like Whiskey (as shown at the top of the page), plus the equally cool-yet-rugged Otter Green shown above.

When you want to get out of town and onto the trail, lace up durable hiking boots and trail shorts, then load up this bag with your everyday carry essentials. When the situation calls for gear a little more refined (hauling extra provisions to a cookout when the time finally comes?). this Filson Ballistic Nylon Duffel Hybrid does the job quite nicely, too — put on your favorite henley and an expertly faded pair of slim blue denim for the occasion, then be prepared to field questions about your perfectly made bag. Sounds like a plan? Sounds like a plan.

For now, head to my Instagram to see how I’m wearing my favorite summer gear, or join me on Twitter to talk all things #menswear. Lastly: Thanks for reading!

A perfect summer T-shirt? Yes, I certainly think so.

Folks, thanks for joining us for another edition of The List, whereby we cover the best new men’s gear and menswear each week. The theme of this week, of course? That means we’ll talk about the best new T-shirt, the best men’s chinos and some essential summer boots (yes, summer  boots). Are you ready? I sure hope so — here we go. Oh, and to get in touch with me on these picks, you can find me on Twitter.

Forty Five Tee — $32

OK, perhaps by now you’re sick of hearing about Forty Five Tees from Huckberry. It’s a highly affordable T-shirt for summer, so consider picking one up in … every color?

Todd Snyder Terry Button Down Polo — $128

An utterly cool, retro shirt for summer.

Let’s say you want to step things up just a bit from your new favorite T-shirt … in that case, this stylish retro polo from Todd Snyder is the way to go. It’s a terry cloth polo that’s every bit as breezy and laidback as a classic tee, but with a bit more polish. One of the coolest shirts to buy for summer? Yes indeed.

Best believe it, folks.

Grayers Bedford Stripe V-Neck Sweater — $98

An ideal sweater for chilly summer nights.

Yes, folks — we’re recommending a lightweight sweater for summer as we keep things rolling here. Taylor Stitch Slim Chinos in Organic British Khaki — $98

The very best men’s chinos for summer — plain and simple.

This isn’t the first time you’ve read about the Taylor Stitch Slim Chinos on the blog, and it assuredly won’t be the last. Some of the best men’s chinos regardless of season, they’re perfect to wear with a slim tee and your favorite sneakers. Speaking of …

CLAE Malone Sneakers — $160

Retro sneakers to rock all summer, my friends.

Who doesn’t love a pair of vintage-style sneakers, right? Leave it to CLAE to come through again with a pair of the best men’s sneakers, one made with nubuck leather in a flattering, court-inspired silhouette. They’re assuredly the ideal everyday sneakers to carry you through summer.

Rhythm Staple Beach Shorts — $56

Beach shorts? Swim shorts? A bit of both? Yes indeed.

Looking for some of the best men’s shorts for summer? Perhaps to supplement your collection currently? Mott and Bow Graham Slim Denim Shirt — $79

A classic and cool denim shirt to wear all summer.

As we’ve said in the past, it’s pretty cool that the makers of your favorite denim are also now making one of the best men’s shirts for summer. I think you’ll find this stylish denim shirt can be worn with plenty of your favorite summer style essentials, including vintage canvas pants and stylish suede dress shoes.

Flint and Tinder Chore Coat — $158

Possibly the best jacket for a summer evening.

We’ve talked about what to wear when it gets hot out this summer, so now, let’s talk about a jacket to wear when it gets cold this summer. It’s going to happen when the sun goes down on certain nights, so you might as well grab this rugged chore coat from the good folks at Flint and Tinder.

Fisher + Baker Greenwich Anorak — $498

Your new favorite jacket for summer.

Now, let’s talk about the perfect jacket for summer rain — that would just so happen to be this rugged anorak from Fisher + Baker. Easy to wear thanks to the mobile cut & featuring space for your everyday carry essentials, it’s one of summer’s best jackets.

Chill Boys Performance Bamboo Boxer Briefs — $29.95

Stylish, effective performance boxer briefs.

Hey, it’s hot out there. Stay cool and comfortable in style with these performance boxer briefs from Chill Boys — think of them like compression shorts, but better and easier to wear on the daily. I’ve been testing them out recently (thanks to the brand for sending!) & can’t recommend them enough.
Billykirk No. 237 Briefcase — $450

A durable, rugged everyday bag.

The best men’s bag for your everyday carry can be found right here, folks. I’m not exaggerating, either — Billykirk has a long history of making some off the most rugged bags for men, including this handsome waxed canvas and leather briefcase.
My friends, it seems we’ve once again run the gamut when it comes to the best men’s gear, covering everything from one of the most rugged bags for men to a stylish denim shirt and even a neat & unexpected way to upgrade your wall art. What was your favorite from the above picks? I’m always drawn toward pieces like a rugged chore coat from Flint and Tinder or, say, equally rugged suede shoes.  But maybe, just maybe, you want to go  more casual  with something like the Rhythm Staple Beach Shorts or some vintage-style sneakers? It’s all on the table today, and that’s good news for us menswear fans indeed. Again, let me know on Twitter if you end up shopping any of these summer gear picks. Cheers, my friends!

The Friday Read: Buck Mason Bandanas, The Best Men’s Beard Kits & New Beef Jerky

Find all the right gear you need for summer — from Todd Snyder, of course.

Editor’s note: If you follow me on Twitter, perhaps you saw that I’ll be launching an E-mail newsletter, The Style Guide In Brief, in the coming weeks. Read more & sign up here to stay in the loop!

Who among us is really ready to start living their best summer life? Even in these times of quarantine, I think it can still be possible if you find the right adventures or the right (local) getaway, and of course, the best menswear for summer — take the Todd Snyder menswear seen above. Perfect for a hang at the beach house, a weekend at the lake … you name it, Todd Snyder‘s got you set for a summer weekend (to say the very least). During the rest of the week, it’s nice to have comfortabe gear you can depend on at home, too (just witness this gear roundup featuring a stylish Todd Snyder Traveler Suit). But back to the weekend: Who’s ready for it? And what’s on your to-do list? With hot weather aplenty sweeping the country, maybe you’re in search of a watering hole and a cold beer while wearing one of the best men’s swimsuits?

women's oxford shoe from Nisolo

I can only dream of that here in Brooklyn for the time being, but that doesn’t mean I’m not looking forward to getting out and about on my own in pursuit of new Brooklyn craft beer and the like. I had the recent chance to visit the newly opened Keg & Lantern Taproom, right near the waterfront in Red Hook, and can’t recommend it enough if you happen to live in the borough (or ever make it out that way!). Get the light and refreshing Pocho, a Mexican Lager ideal for hot summer days and nights — and if you do make it to the brewery’s original location in Greenpoint, be sure to get the excellent wings-and-pitcher deal. As often seems to be the case these days, I’ll also be spinning some new vinyl, with my pick of choice being the fantastic, brand-new “Punisher” by indie rock luminary Phoebe Bridgers. Have you given that album a listen? I plan on spinning it with my favorite coffee this weekend. For now though, we’ve got the rest of the Friday Read below — check out, then feel free to give me a follow on Twitter (if you’re not already following me!) or Instagram.

The coolest way to cover your face this summer? The two-pack also gives you even more utility from Buck Mason.

  • Keeping well-groomed in fine fashion is a necessity no matter the season — is it not? To that end, and for all my bearded brethren out there, I wrote about the best men’s beard grooming kits for GearMoose. If you’ve been searching high and low for grooming essentials, well, search no more. Remember, a well-groomed beard is but one of the summer style essentials should you have handy — in fact, it’s with you all the time! (Sorry, sorry — had to do it. Moving on!).
  • As you undoubtedly know, we’re all about the very best men’s gear on the blog. That’s why if you’re new (or new-ish) around these parts, I’d point you in the direction of my weekly  gear roundup known as The List. This recent entry is a good starting point, covering everything from the best new chinos to stylish leather dress shoes and a cool growler for cold brew (yes, that’s right!). Have fun stocking up, folks.

OK, my friends. We’re wrapping up today’s Friday Read in good time — still plenty of chances to get out there this weekend, after all. But before you go, I’ve got one last recommendation for you: A camp collar shirt needs to be on your summer shopping list ASAP, and you need to know how to rock it the right way. Hence, my guide on how to wear a camp collar shirt will have you sorted out in no time. That’s going to do it for me today. Have a great weekend, stay safe & thanks for reading, folks!

North 89 No-1 Weatherproof Sneakers — $245

In a similar vein to the Marathon Navigator Watch, the right pair of summer sneakers are going to blend seamless comfort and functionality. These weatherproof sneakers, while pricey, happen to check all the right boxes.
Billy Reid Selvedge Driver Shirt — $325

A durable, stylish selvedge shirt for summer.

We’re longtime fans of Alabama menswear designer Billy Reid here on the blog (just look at the incredible Billy Reid Bond Peacoat, for starters), and this pleasingly rugged summer shirt is a fine addition to the brand’s line of the best menswear essentials … is it not?
Grayers Moorea Garment-Dyed Swim Trunks — $68

The crepe sole and lightweight build help out with that. Pair them up with your Flint and Tinder Lightweight Stretch Chinos and a classic sweatshirt, to start.
Sennheiser Ambeo Immersive Sound Bar — $2,500

The best way to upgrade your home listening experience, easily.

Let’s turn our attention toward the best audio gear for your home. To be more specific — your audio system might be in need of a major upgrade as we all spend more time at home, and the Sennheiser Amebo Sound Bar is perhaps the best sound bar on the market (with a price tag to match). High-end drivers and the ability to match with the acoustics of the room are simply without  parallel.

Techne Merlin Watch — $173.49

The best men’s watch for summer? Very nearly.

I’ve had the great fortune of testing out the classically designed, durable Techne Merlin Watch these past few weeks, and let me tell ya … it’s the real deal. A slim-but-tough profile, a summer-ready NATO strap, a stainless steel case and a crisp, retro-inspired dial design make this a surefire winner.

Style Pick of the Week: Billykirk Standard Issue East-West Tote Bag

The best tote bag to haul your summer gear? Quite possibly.

The days, in these strange and trying times, keep on rolling by, and *checks notes* it’s Saturday, so it’s time for yet another Style Pick of the Week covering the very best men’s gear. Well, one of the best men’s gear picks — in this case, it’s an everyday carry essential from the fine folks at New Jersey-based Billykirk. For a bit more than 20 years now, Billykirk‘s Chris and Kirk Bray have been making some of the most rugged goods on the planet, and doing it all in America — that’s where the new Billykirk Standard Issue Tote Bag enters the equation. The No. 540 Standard Issue Tote is a staple of the brand, but it gets a seriously cool and summer-centric update via the bright, fun River Yellow color as seen above (and it also now comes in Teal). Your summer travel plans might look a heck of a lot different — schlepping your gear a few yards to your firepit versus driving cross-coutry, for instance, but one of the best men’s tote bags can still add some excellent utility to your arsenal of everyday carry essentials.

Picture this: You’re gearing up for a summer weekend bonfire at home. You’re wearing your favorite summer sneakers and maybe some light wash jeans. You’ve got your cooler but you need to haul the rest of your gear out to said firepit. And you’re using this rugged tote bag. That’s but one use case, though — this tough and stylish tote bag is going to come in plenty handy elsewhere, too.

SHOP: The Billykirk Standard Issue East-West Tote Bag

A dependable tote bag could become a new summer style essentials.

A great tote bag like this one from Billykirk is assuredly worth adding to your list of summer gear, especially when it’s made from 10 oz. waxed cotton canvas — perfect for breezy, dewy summer mornings and chilly nights. And you needn’t worry about the durability of this thing, given that the Billykirk Standard Issue Tote Bag also features mil-spec nylon webbing and a full-grain leather bottom. It’s a seriously well-designed tote bag and includes an open main compartment and three interior organization compartments, too (to go along with two exterior pockets). Those are all critical when it comes to storing your everyday carry essentials or hauling around your favorite growler.  Heck, the No. 540 Standard Issue Tote is even sized to fit up to a 15″ laptop, so you can get some work done at your local cafe (when it reopens, that is). So, it’s clear that this new, rugged tote bag belongs on your list of summer style essentials — right? That’s a surefire “Yes” from me. Check it out at Billykirk, and feel free to hit me up on Twitter for more of my thoughts on the brand.
