Style Suggestion: How to Dress for A Spring Road Trip

Are you packed up for your next spring road trip? Or perhaps, your first of the season? If you’re still struggling with what to bring in your stylish weekender bag, your hard-working Style Guide team of one can help you with that today. Much like dressing for winter travel, gearing up for a day in transit — be it by plane, train or automobile — requires you to meet a few different style scenarios. You could be migrating from temperate, breezy conditions to sweltering heat, as I did on a spring road trip to Florida, or you could be going from a dressy day at the office to a casual vacation.  Either way, packing and traveling with versatility and crisp-yet-casual style in mind can only help you in the long run. So, the focus is on layering, solid fits, mobile fabrics and just a few spring style classics. Think you can handle all that? Hope so — and if you want to see a certain topic covered in this series, leave me a comment in my virtual suggestion box … on Twitter. OK, gear up and hit the road!

The Weekender Bag: Nisolo Leon Weekender in Chestnut — $397

Nisolo Leon Weekender

A beautiful mix of durable leather and excellent style.

As previously covered in our Style Pick of the Week series, there’s really no way you can go wrong with the handsome, supremely stylish and tough Nisolo Leon Weekender in Chestnut. Done up in rich brown leather and lined with tan cotton canvas, the Leon Weekender is a refined blend of style and functionality, and it’ll look just as great in any Instagram travel shots as it will sitting in your trunk or overhead compartment. Think of the Nisolo Leon Weekender as an investment in great taste, great looks and great adventures.

Greats

The Bomber Jacket: La Paz Ortigao Bomber in Almond — $275

La Paz Ortigao Bomber

A unique shade of … well, almond, done up in a classic cotton bomber jacket.

We all need some stylish spring outerwear in our lives, right? That’s what you’re getting with the versatile, casual and well-made La Paz Ortigao Bomber in Almond. This 100 percent cotton bomber — featuring raglan sleeves to broaden your frame visually — is made in Portugal, hence the higher price tag. And lest you be wary of the Almond color, think of the lighter cream/off-white shade of the La Paz Bomber as being similar to a foray into white denim — a move that when done right, looks great. I have a sneaky feeling you’ll like the rest of the #menswear ensemble we pair it with, too.
Flint and Tinder

A classic navy polo, made with comfort and care from a solid brand.

The Style Guide editorial team — of one — sure does love Flint and Tinder. From rugged fall and winter outerwear like the Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker Jacket to seasonal staples like the Flint and Tinder Moleskin Shirt and even the brand’s Garment-Dyed Sweatpants, they make something for every occasion and preference. And now, my fine gentlemen (and ladies!), I offer up the Flint and Tinder Supima AirKnit Polo. Made with a tailored fit and in an essential color like navy, it’s a comfortable, breathable layering piece that does just fine sans jacket, too.

The Pants: Iron and Resin Drifter Pant in Graphite — $50

Iron and Resin

The comfort of a drawstring waistband with the tailored look of chinos.

The vibe of this outfit so far screams comfortable, casual and put-together — not sloppy. So while you could feasibly reach for tailored sweatpants here, we’re going with another hybrid option — specifically, classic drawstring trousers from the fine folks at Iron and Resin. Featuring organic cotton with 2 percent stretch and a straight fit, these are perfect pants for travel, what with room to move and versatile looks that can take you from the road to dinner without missing a beat.

Sutro Shoes Inc.

The Sneakers: Johnston and Murphy Allister Lace-up — $145

A clean white sneaker from a brand known for its hard-wearing boots.

Who doesn’t love a pair of crisp, classic white sneakers for spring? Your Style Guide author surely does. And while you could certainly swap these white sneakers for something a little more polished — like refined suede Chelsea boots — the simple, clean silhouette of the Allister Lace-up works just as well.  The cushioned footbed should keep your feet comfortable for hours at a time, and there’s hardly a spring style combination more widely accepted than tailored chinos and white sneakers.

The Belt (To Pack): J. Crew Factory Washed Leather Belt — $24.50

No need to get too fancy when it comes to a leather belt to pack for weekend trips.

Packing up your Leon Weekender is going to require some planning. After all, if you’re only going away for a weekend, perhaps you can survive with only a brown leather belt — particularly if you’re wearing drawstring pants on one of those days. But, let’s say you also bring along some slim dark denim. Well, enter this affordable belt for classic style that’s wearable with everything from tough leather boots to the aforementioned white sneakers. It’s as simple as that.
Huckberry

The Watch: Jack Mason Aviator 3-Hand — $205

A great-looking watch for a solid price — spring style on the go, without a doubt.

You didn’t think we forgot about including an essential leather watch, did you? Of course not. Just as with packing up only one belt, perhaps you can get through a weekend with just one watch — and if that’s your challenge, I’d humbly submit the Jack Mason Aviator 3-Hand as your watch of choice, amigo.  The folks at Jack Mason make watches that pull from a variety of influences, from flight to seafaring, and the handsome Aviator 3-Hand combines rugged good looks and crisp, classic style.

The Socks: Richer Poorer Griffin Socks — $8

Richer Poorer

Simple stripes and a nice. comfortable weight for spring.

If you’re going to drop some serious cash on a slim bomber jacket and a durable leather weekender bag, you might as well hang onto your spare change when it comes to buying socks, right? Fear not — Richer Poorer makes high-quality socks in a variety of fabrics despite the low price. Those options include the “Everyday Midweight” option seen here. Even better? They won’t look half-bad in terms of color and design when you take off your spring sneakers, either.

The Underrated Accessories: Hudson Suttler USA Dopp Kit — $49.98 AND Decibullz Custom-Fit Bluetooth Wireless Earphones — $119.99

A durable dopp kit and high-quality headphones — both great pieces to have handy on the road.

If you’ve been hunting for a stylish men’s dopp kit for a while now, end that search ASAP, because the Hudson Suttler USA Dopp Kit is here to save the day. Heavy-duty olive drab canvas sets this kit apart, as do small touches like leather zipper pulls. In short, it’s a much better way to carry your grooming essentials than a plastic bag. And who doesn’t need premium headphones, right? The kicker with Decibullz? These headphones can be molded to the shape of your ear, just like a mouthguard. If you need some music to listen to on your trip, might I recommend Lucius or Local Natives? Onward.

There are a lot of details to consider when packing up for a spring road trip. Starting with a durable, functional weekender bag like the Leon Weekender is as good a jumping-off point as any, however. And for travel that could start out chilly and end up warm, layering essentials like the La Paz Bomber should prove premium, well-made and versatile. The same can be said for a classic spring polo — enter the Flint and Tinder Supima AirKnit Polo. Lest we leave behind any stylish travel accessories, don’t forget to pack a durable casual watch — certainly, the Jack Mason Aviator 3-Hand is the way to go. Clean white sneakers and grey Iron and Resin chinos also make for easygoing, high-low style, which is just what you want when on the road. And certainly, everyday carry pieces like the Hudson Suttler USA Dopp Kit are going to make your life a whole lot easier — and more stylish — when traveling. If you’ve got pieces you’d like to see added, or if you think this suggestion is just fine and dandy, leave a note on The Style Guide Facebook page.

See you on the road — stay stylish!

Style Suggestion: What to Wear on Spring Break This Year

If you’ve been waiting all March for warmer temperatures — rejoice! Well, almost. And if you’ve been waiting all month¬†to hit the road for spring break (or a regular ole spring vacation), you’re in luck. Yessir, we’re talking what to wear on spring break this year,¬† and you’re absolutely going to like the way you look (I guarantee it … wink, wink). We’re mixing pieces both essential — stylish swim trunks — and¬†unexpected (a smart-looking beach towel). In short, the latest style suggestion here on the blog deals not with a more mundane topic, like how to wear a long-sleeve polo, but is¬†solely focused on helping you look your best for some fun in the sun. In fact, the below combo certainly works as you dress to head to the beach or pool, and with a few small tweaks (swap the swim trunks for slim chino shorts), you’re set for the rest of your day. So, you’ll have plenty to look forward to besides just some ample beach time — and if you haven’t previously considered style upgrades like a nicer pair of sunglasses or revamped beach gear,¬†it’s time to start seriously thinking about it.¬†That’s what to wear, at least — and if I were you, I’d look to get away¬†in¬†an affordable manner (a heads-up that¬†you can find your perfect spring break house by searching affordable Florida rentals through Tripping.com).¬†And on the shopping front: Check out these picks below, follow along on Instagram and join me on Twitter for more spring style musings.

The Shirt: Life/After/Denim Patchwork Short Sleeve Shirt — $110

Quite possibly the most unique shirt you’ll see on the beach this spring — and that’s a great thing.

Whereas lots of guys — myself included — sometimes reach for a tank top, a slim short-sleeve patterned shirt is a surefire way to upgrade your beach-going game. For one, it looks more crisp and put-together. And second of all — it just works much better for stepping away from the beach to a patio bar than a tank top (at least in the opinion of your Style Guide author).¬† What’s more, the distinct color and pattern on this Life/After/Denim shirt makes it a choice #menswear move all through the rest of the spring and summer.

Frank & Oak

The Swim Trunks: Bather Trunk Co. Surf Solid Trunks —¬†$78

A sharp, easy-to-wear pair of swim trunks.

In matters of swimwear, simplicity can sometimes reign supreme. Just look at James Bond’s swim trunks. That’s sort of the vibe we’re going for here — cut more like a pair of tailored chino shorts than your average pair of baggy board shorts, the Bather Trunk Co. Surf Solid Trunks¬†are clean and crisp. Between the navy color, no-frills logo, shorter inseam¬†and elastic waistband, the Surf Solid Trunks¬†should have everything you’re looking for in your next pair.

The Shoes: SeaVees Huntington Middie — $92.98

SeaVees Huntington Middie

Slip these on, slip ’em off … take ’em everywhere on spring break.

As we’ve said before, simplicity is sometimes key. And there’s no better pair of spring sneakers when it comes to combining versatile style, eye-catching design and wearability¬†than the SeaVees Huntington Middie. It’s rare that a¬†slip-on shoe¬†can be worn to the beach, on a stroll around town and to dinner afterward — all the while feeling comfortable and looking great. Your everyday pair of flip-flops, these are not. Like this outfit’s shirting selection, you can wear the Huntington Middie all throughout spring and summer, too.

Greats

The Sunglasses: Raen Optics Vale Sunglasses — $160

Raen Optics

Head-turning sunglasses with unique looks and functionality in droves.

As brought to you by the ever-stylish guys and gals at Huckberry, the Raen Optics Vale could be your¬†favorite pair of sunglasses … you just haven’t bought ’em¬†yet. When you’re wearing dialed-down swim trunks and sharp slip-on sneakers, your eyewear can be a place to have a bit of fun — not too much fun, though. Don’t go crazy. I kid! Go crazy and pick up these sunglasses, which channel style that’s at once of-the-moment and also timeless. And to think you get all that for $160? Good stuff.

The Watch:¬†Huckberry Combat B33 GMT Watch — $498.98

Between the NATO strap and the stainless steel case, this watch can handle quite a bit.

¬†(Editor’s note: Looks like this watch is sold out! Wild.).¬†If you swing on through the blog with regularity — which you should — you’ll recognize that we covered the Huckberry Combat B33 GMT Watch¬†during our Style Pick of the Week series a few weeks back. Well, it’s here again today in triumphant fashion. Although it’s tough to top a sturdy, stylish dive watch (and even a rugged rubber strap watch has its merits), the Huckberry Combat B33 GMT Watch¬†is truly one-of-a-kind in terms of toughness and functionality, what with a built-for-anything NATO strap and a durable stainless steel case, plus a distinctive dial.

Beckett Simonon

The Towel and Sunscreen: Finisterre Beach Towel — $44.98 AND Tread for Men Traveler Sunscreen (SPF 30) —¬†$3

Finisterre

Don’t leave these two items behind — for real.

Lest you think that the notion of stylish beach gear doesn’t apply to your towel, think again. If you’re using an old towel that’s seen better days, the Finisterre Beach Towel¬†is going to change all that simply and subtly. It’s made from a soft and absorbent, quick-dry French terry fabric and can even pack into its own pocket. Sunscreen is another must-have that I’ve skipped all too often in my beach-going days — for about the price of that PBR you’ll buy later, why not pick up a couple handy Tread for Men sunscreen bottles? Ehh?

The Bag: Bradley Mountain Utility Bag — $159

Bradley Mountain

One bag that can do it all, from the start of your trip to the end.

Alright, let’s say you’re packing for the road but don’t want to also pack a smaller tote bag to lug to the beach … makes things easier, yeah?¬† If you’re on the same page as me, the Bradley Mountain Utility Bag¬† is the one do-it-all travel bag you need now. Part weekender bag and part easy-to-lug oversized tote, the Bradley Mountain Utility Bag¬†is sturdy as heck and built to withstand plenty more than sun. You’ll have ample room to carry everything from that Finisterre Beach Towel¬†to your SeaVees kicks — and it’s a great value, too.

Greats

The Underrated Accessory: Sennheiser High-End Around-Ear Headphones — $249.95
Sennheiser Headphones

The only way to guarantee a great, and relaxing listening experience on spring break is to buy these guys. Right?

OK, bear with me here, folks. A premium, high-quality¬†pair of headphones like the ones shown above might not be the best pick if you’re trekking to, say, Cancun (or hey… Fort Myers Beach). But if your spring vacation is going to be about kicking back, relaxing and listening to prime¬†music or a podcast. ¬†it could be mighty nice to bring along a very neat, impressive style upgrade like the Sennheiser High-End Around-Ear Headphones. We’re talking exceptional sound, handsome looks and the ability to function as both desk d√©cor and a spring break travel essential. That’s a winning combo all around.
We definitely covered a lot of ground in terms of what to wear on spring break this year — didn’t we? Whether your travels are taking you some place exotic and international, or just down the road, it never hurts to pack up in style. From helpful, durable accessories like the Bradley Mountain Utility Bag¬†to a travel must-have like the Huckberry Combat B33 GMT Watch, I’d say you should leave no stone unturned when it comes to packing effectively and stylishly this season. You’d be surprised how much of a nice difference pieces like the Finisterre Beach Towel¬†can also make in terms of your everyday carry, and a unique short-sleeve shirt like the Life/After/Denim Patchwork¬† Shirt is both unexpected and yet much-needed. As to your sunglasses and swim trunks — isn’t it time you upgraded those? Again, I kid — but if you need some new ones before you hit the road, start here.
As always, thanks for reading — stay safe on the road!

Style Guide on The Road: A Florida Spring Break

Casual style fit for beach adventures. Striped tee and swim trunks by JackThreads. Renshaw Sneakers by Brooks Heritage. Military Watch by Timex + Todd Snyder. Sunglasses by Nautica. Explorer’s Cap by Huckberry. Bracelet by Miansai.

So, welcome back to another Style Guide travel post! It’s become a custom these past few years for me to make a spring trek down to Florida¬†in mid-March,¬†right around the Big Ten Tournament (featuring my beloved Michigan State Spartans) and right around my dad’s birthday (hey, Dad!). And so it was the case again this past weekend, as I got out of the hustle and bustle of New York City for some birthday celebrations with my dad and¬†some much-needed Florida beach time. I had the chance to spend a week down south as I celebrated a Fort Myers Christmas in style back at the¬†end of December, but this trip couldn’t have come at a better time, what with cold temperatures returning to Brooklyn this past weekend. My packing list was different than my recent winter trip to New Haven, but I focused on spring style essentials and my favorite #menswear picks for the road nonetheless. Join me, and bring that bottle opener — will ya?
Greats

Transitional gear for temperate NYC and sunny Florida. Trucker Jacket by Levi’s. Garment-dye oxford by Abercrombie & Fitch. Stretch twill pants by Kit Culture. Greenflex Chukkas by Astorflex. Watch by Timex for J. Crew. Sunglasses by MVMT Watches. Flight Brief by Owen and Fred.

It was a temperate early morning in NYC as I hit the road, so I had to dress with transitional travel style in mind. For me, that meant an Abercrombie & Fitch Garment Dye Oxford Shirt, layered up with my Levi’s Trucker Jacket. Of note,¬†that oxford is a very¬†affordably priced, great-fitting and seasonally appropriate shirt. Just as with my New Haven road trip, I stepped into my extremely comfortable, slim-fitting and travel-ready¬†stretch twill pants from Kit Culturethe five percent stretch proved perfect for a plane ride. Equally perfect for travel style? A sharp pair of sustainably made Astorflex chukkas — the¬†Greenflex in Dark Khaki provided¬†a stylish¬†contrast to¬†my Timex for J. Crew watch,. And with its minimal case size and durable NATO strap, the latest Timex for J. Crew timepiece is¬†an affordable casual watch you should buy as soon as you can.¬† To haul the rest of my gear, I relied on both the¬†Owen and Fred Voyager Waxed Weekender and the¬† Owen and Fred Flight Brief in Midnight¬†; each proved stylish and durable, what with handsome leather accents and a canvas exterior.

With my travel gear in tow and nothing but sunny skies in the forecast, I landed in Florida looking forward to some serious fun in the sun — and that’s certainly what you get in Fort Myers. With a delicious lunch at Summerlin Jake’s in the books — waterfront view and all — it was high time for an afternoon spent at my parents’ pool (one of the more scarce things¬†to find in New York City, truly).¬† Topped off with a delicious dinner and some choice¬†brews¬†at The Grill in Fort Myers, it was a much-needed day of relaxation that couldn’t have worked out any better.

Greats

No better place than Florida for a nautical-inspired tee and some crisp kicks. Striped tee by JackThreads. Stringer Dune Shorts by Bridge and Burn. Renshaw Sneakers by Brooks Heritage. Military Watch by Timex + Todd Snyder. Sunglasses by Nautica. Brass bottle opener by Owen and Fred.

With a fun Thursday in the books, a weekend of¬†kicking back¬†was really¬†just getting started. That’s not to say it wasn’t busy — and that’s not to say I didn’t dress in style, either. Naturally, I had to grab warm-weather gear from perennial Style Guide favorites JackThreads, including¬†a nautical-striped tee.¬†Hot temps also meant it was time to ditch my classic blue denim¬†(finally!) for a pair of Bridge and Burn shorts. For exploring Fort Myers, I¬†also had to reach for stylish accessories (enter my Nautica Square Sunglasses) and comfortable,¬†versatile¬†footwear —¬†that’d be the Brooks Heritage Renshaw ¬†from the¬†brand-new Brooks Heritage Grand Slam Collection. For grabbing donuts at the legendary Bennett’s Fresh Roast,¬†the extra¬† comfort provided by those kicks¬†was crucial — as was staying on time, thanks to my Timex + Todd Snyder Military Watch. And wouldn’t you know it, keeping track of the clock helped us squeeze in some much-needed beach time before¬†a great home-cooked meal (I’d highly suggest you ask me for my dad’s rib recipe). MSU’s Big Ten Tournament loss aside, it was a heck of a nice day to be in Fort Myers.

Taking on the heat — and bar-hopping — in style. Marco Polo by Life/After/Denim. Premium Washed Khakis by Dockers. Renshaw Sneakers by Brooks Heritage. Calypso Watch and Runaway Aviators by MVMT Watches. Bracelet by Miansai. Glasses by Frameri.

As the sun rose on Saturday, it hit me that I still had two full days left in Florida — that’s quite the treat, and it made it all the more enjoyable to get out and enjoy¬†more sun¬†on Saturday.¬†As you’d expect, I tried to make it a point to bring along my best spring bar crawl gear . For stops at the¬†seriously cool¬†Bury Me Brewing (themed like a craft beer graveyard) and a quick pint (and tasty chicken wings!) at The Lodge,¬†pieces like my Life/After/Denim Marco Polo proved well-crafted to beat the heat. I kept things equally¬†casual on my bottom half, opting for a new pair of the Dockers Premium Washed Khaki in¬†a mobile Slim Tapered fit. Featuring¬†washed stretch twill and¬†a Florida-friendly shade of light blue, I’d opt you reach for a similar pair when you want to look put-together, yet feel casual and relaxed.

Does it get any better than hanging out in the beautiful Florida sun? Marco Polo by Life/After/Denim. Renshaw Sneakers by Brooks Heritage. Calypso Watch and Runaway Aviators by MVMT Watches.

On the footwear front, the crisp Brooks Heritage Renshaw ¬†was again my pick, not least for the way it added a bit of sharp style to the combo. And for getting around Fort Myers and heading to evening dinner at the terrific Courtney’s, my MVMT Watches Calypso Watch and MVMT Watches Runaway Aviators proved to be prime accessories picks. Given the cold weather that swept through NYC this past weekend, I was more than happy to have some ample outdoor time sipping on¬†tasty craft beer¬†and wearing my favorite new warm-weather menswear. Not bad, ehh?

The right way to finish off a Florida trip. T-shirt by Todd Snyder x Champion. Ace Shorts by Mack Weldon. Legend Sneakers by SeaVees. Calypso Watch and Runaway Aviators by MVMT Watches. Explorer’s Cap by Huckberry

Even with Saturday in the books, I still had nearly a full day in Florida prior to my evening flight back to chilly New York City. So, what else to do but grab comfortable, casual style essentials?¬† For yours truly, that tends to start with a well-fitting tee — is it any wonder that Todd Snyder x Champion T-shirts fit the bill perfectly?¬†And what better way to soak in some sun than with the tailored-yet-casual Ace Short from Mack Weldon? Of course, I find that SeaVees sneakers are the perfect way to complement a casual outfit, especially the spring-ready Legend Sneaker Regatta. And to take on a great lunch at Big Blue Brewing, there were no better picks than my MVMT Watches Calypso Watch and MVMT Watches Runaway Aviators, along with my¬†Huckberry Explorer’s Cap.¬† Unfortunately, the day drew to a close all too quickly — with slightly chillier temps in the forecast, it was time to trade in my Mack Weldon¬†shorts for stretch twill pants and swap my sneakers for chukkas.

Greats

It’s always such a treat to head down to Florida and get some great time in the sun and sand — even if it’s only for a quick weekend. The chance to catch up with family and celebrate my dad’s big day was fantastic, too. From the¬†beautiful beaches of Fort Myers to the great craft beer and food scene downtown (and throughout the city), this trip really had it all. Of course, we’re back to the grind today in NYC (follow along on Instagram to see how I’m fighting the chill). With that being said, I already can’t wait to get back to Fort Myers.¬†In the meantime, you can check back here tomorrow for a new St. Patrick’s Day menswear ensemble, and you can join us on Wednesday for a look at what to wear for March Madness.

Until the next trip — thanks for tagging along!
