Best men's winter jackets

The right way to dress for winter — the Proof Storm Shield Parka.

Alright, I’m ready for a stylish winter weekend — how about you? More importantly, how are you dressing for the nasty weather that seems to be blanketing the country right now? If I were you, I’d layer up with the Proof Storm Shield Jacket — the team at Proof makes gear with versatiliy, mobility & performance in mind, so that’s a great way to take on the season. From the Primaloft Gold insulation to the ease of packing it up, the Proof Storm Shield Jacket just works. OK, we’ve got that out of the way. It’s now time to look back at the latest and greatest men’s style news of the week — agreed? We’re about halfway through January, so I’d love to hear how your men’s style resolutions are holding up. It’s all about refreshing and upgrading the basics you know and love — pieces like the classic flannel shirt or a timeless henley — in a new way for the new year.

RAnd we’re already off and running in matters aside from menswear, too. Tonight, I’m heading to my favorite venue in the city (that’d be Brooklyn Steel) to see Nashville singer-songwriter Rayland Baxter play what promises to be a soulful, moving show in East Williamsburg. Have any more suggestions for weekend listening? Feel free to let me know on Twitter — and in the meantime, let’s get on with the Friday Read! Cheers.

  • Now, this post ran a few weeks ago, but it’s worth revisting — Esquire.com is giving you the full scoop on the best men’s duffle bag to take with you anywhere and everywhere. In short, it’s a convertible duffle that goes from the gym to the office to the road. Of course, you can also view more essential men’s travel gear elsewhere on the site — happy hunting!
  • Let’s take a quick step back for a second — a proper #FlashbackFriday, if you will. While the rest of us deal with sleet and snow, perhaps you find yourself in a more temperate climate. If that’s the case, I’d imagine you’re sick of reading about the best men’s winter coats and want something a little more suited to warm weather? In that case, check out this #OOTD on the best way to wear sneakers now. Bingo.Shop Faherty Brand
  • There are regular pairs of boots, and then there are the sort of rugged men’s boots you invest in — ones that get better over time. A few weeks back, I wrote all about how Nick’s Boots are the boots you should buy now. You can find out why at The Manual.

Once again, thanks for tuning into this edition of the Friday Read. If you still find yourself on the hunt for something to read or something to wear (or both), I’d point you toward learning more about this rugged winter cardigan from Faherty Brand.  Looking for something a bit more refined? Well, then — the Bond Peacoat from Billy Reid (as seen in our Style Pick of the Week series) is the way to go. OK, that’s all I’ve got today. Stay stylish!

Style Pick of the Week: Billy Reid Bond Peacoat

Billy Reid Bond Peacoat

The best peacoat on the market? There’s certainly nothing else like it.

Folks, there’s just no other way to look at it: The Billy Reid Bond Peacoat is an iconic jacket you need in your wardrobe this winter. Oh, and it’s worn by Mr. James Bond himself (as seen above). That’s it. That’s all there is to it. And if this classic peacoat wasn’t so well-made and uniquely stylish, that might be the end of this post. But trust me, there’s so much more to say about the exceptional Bond Peacoat from lauded American menswear designer Billy Reid. It’s great enough that it received prominent placement in the 2012 James Bond film “Skyfall” — of cours. The popularity of this coat (actually named for Bond Street in Manhattan) has only grown since then. Or is “legend” a more fitting word than “popularity”? At any rate, you can currently pick it up via the brand’s Web site, or via Huckberry — all the better, seeing as Huckberry is truly one of my favorite online shops for the stylish guy (that’s you!). That’s really just the start of what makes this coat so great. Now, we’ll be telling you all about how to wear this stylish peacoat in our #OOTD series in the coming days, but for now, let’s get down to business — the Bond Peacoat delivers in matters of style AND functionality, starting with the extremely warm double-woven melton wool construction. That alone makes it worth the *gulp* nearly-$700 price tag.

SHOP: The Billy Reid Bond Peacoat

It’s really not too often — try never — that you find a peacoat that so perfectly embodies style that’s suited for a secret agent and for the everyman, yet that’s just what the Billy Reid Bond Peacoat offers. Take the crisp navy color, as worn by naval servicemen decades ago. Heck, that color and this silhouette alone are enough to add class to any outfit.

Bond Peacoat

A slim, tailored peacoat that shot to prominence thanks to a certain secret agent.

Add in small, seriously premium touches — including a leather-reinforced collar and horn buttons — and you’re looking at much more than your average peacoat. It’s also made in Italy, putting the Billy Reid Bond Peacoat a cut above the rest. Side slash hand warmer pockets and front flap pockets make this coat one that’s not just for show; use them to stow your everyday carry essentials on chilly winter days. It’s crisply cut, making it the ideal complement to tailored wool trousers and rugged leather boots. It’s also a nice way to stay warm in transit to the office or your holiday party — if I were you, I’d wear it over a classic chambray shirt and slim tan chinos, paired up with durable desert boots (read more about all those men’s style essentials elsewhere on the site). Again, you’re going to have to invest in the Billy Reid Bond Peacoat, but I can nearly guarantee it’ll be the last peacoat you buy. OK, that’s it. That’s the end of this post. Get out there and pick it up while you still can!

Viberg Boots

Some of the best men’s boots money can buy — seriously.

Ladies and gentlemen, loyal Style Guide readers, … happy Friday. To start things off, let’s talk about the amazing Viberg Service Boots as shown above, perhaps one of the best pairs of men’s leather boots on the market… and maybe, on the planet?? That’s the case, for me. And if you follow me on Instagram, you know I love my pair of Viberg boots.  Now, to business. We’re getting very close to Christmas — have you taken care of your shopping? If not, we’ll have you set with some exceptional menswear gifting picks next week. In the meantime, we’re coming off a busy week on the homefront — among this week’s highlights, I was thrilled to once again see excellent Australian rock band Gang of Youths play in New York City at the famed Irving Plaza! Rock music is alive and well thanks to those guys. Elsewhere, we talked about one of the best men’s shirt jackets to buy right now, and we also helped you in terms of how to dress for your next business meeting. Now, we’re heading into the weekend, and our next weekly men’s style roundup. OK, that’s all for now — enjoy!

See Now, Buy Now: Keep Warm with a Pair of Stylish Leather Gloves from Hestra

Exceptionally well-made leather gloves that’ll serve you well this winter.

Let’s get one thing straight — a pair of Hestra leather gloves are one of the many things you shouldn’t be leaving the house without this winter. I’d wager you should say goodbye to the days of flimsy, thin gloves you picked up near the checkout aisle at your local sporting goods store (been there, done that!), and instead turn toward a purchase you won’t regret: A pair of stylish leather gloves from a brand that knows a thing or two (or three!) about making ’em. It’s refreshing and exciting to see a brand continue to hone in on the thing they do best, and in the case of Hestra (as seen in this post on the best men’s winter accessories), that thing happens to be crafting the best gloves on the market, no questions asked. The Hestra Utsjo in Elk/Fleece is pictured above, and with good reason. Made from Nordic elk leather, the brand crafts its gloves in largely the same way they have since the company’s founding in 1936 — that’s applause-worthy, right?

A fleece lining and Primaloft polyester insulation ensures top-of-the-line warmth and breathablity when it comes to Hestra leather gloves, while a two-position cuff button offers stability and a nice fit. The overall effect is an especially refined pair of gloves that keep you warm and look a heck of a lot better than a technical winter pair. Why is it worth it to splurge on a pair of stylish leather gloves when you could easily just pick up a random pair from a bargain bin? It’s worth it in the same way it pays off to upgrade your everyday chambray shirt or step into classic slim denim — if you look good, you feel good. And in this instance, you look good, you feel good … and your hands won’t get frostbite! Truly, that’s important. It’s a win-win all the way around when it comes to Hestra leather gloves and in particular, the Hestra Utsjo in Elk/Fleece.

What’s your take on investing in these stylish leather gloves?  Let me know via Twitter!

#OOTD: What to Wear to Your Favorite Brewery This Winter

If ever you read other series from the blog, like our Friday Read, then you’re surely aware that your humble menswear editor loves a delicious craft beer — in addition to a hearty pour of men’s style essentials. Even better than that? Bringing it all together through the art of exploring a new city or borough, finding a brewery — or whiskey bar  — and sampling the local wares while dressed in style (a la today’s #OOTD!). To me, it’s a whole experience — and one should prepare accordingly, hence the theme of today’s (hopefully fun) look. If you’re not the sort to imbibe in beer, whiskey or wine, then the below ensemble can still work for, say an outdoor hike or art gallery visit. Really, this warm, stylish look works any time you want to rotate a few more off-the-wall pieces (like a Stetson hat!) in place of your favorite essentials.

The underlying point is that from the rugged Faherty Brand CPO Jacket to the classic Taylor Stitch chambray shirt, we’re blending styles you already know with gear you might not have tried (like the easy-wearing Proof Rover Pants). In sum total, the result is an #OOTD that’s pleasingly eye-catching and warm, while also fitting in stylistically with the typically rugged, industrial vibes of a brewery or a distillery. Sounds good to me — how about you? To keep an eye on what I’m sipping — and what I’m wearing — be sure to follow yours truly on Instagram

A mix of stylish & edgy classics (a Stetson hat!) to wear while sampling your favorite beers.

  • The Crucial Layer: Faherty Brand Blanket-Lined CPO, $168.98 — A warm outer layer that gives this outfit some rugged appeal. Easier to with the Stetson hat than a suit, I’d say!
  • The Shirt: Taylor Stitch Everyday Chambray Shirt, $98 — A rugged chambray shirt adds the right blend of casual and classic to this #OOTD.
  • The Classic Hat: Stetson Brazos Hat, $98 — So, this classic Stetson hat is one of the more unique headwear options we’ve featured on the blog … but if you’re at a rugged microbrewery or enjoying an upstate weekend retreat and want to switch it up, go for it.
  • The Pants: Proof Rover Pants, $98 — These pants have it all, from a neutral color palette to performance-ready, moisture-wicking fabric and a slim fit.
  • The Boots: Danner Jack II Brogue Boots in Dark Coffee, $220 –These are the stylish leather boots to wear to a whiskey bar or brewery — they’re sleek, well-made and crafted to break in.
  • The Socks: Danner Midweight Merino Crew Socks, $17 — A performance-minded counterpart to your handsome dress boots, your feet will thank you for that combo.
  • The Stylish Leather Watch: Laco Aachen 42 Watch, $369 — An outfit like this calls for an equally bold, rugged leather watch. The Laco Aachen 42 Watch is a new classic.
  • The Everyday Carry Essential: Taylor Stitch Minimalist Billfold Wallet, $98 — A pleasingly crafted, slim leather wallet that’ll age well on your adventures.

Hopefully, you can see how this #OOTD might work to wear to a brewery or a whiskey bar — it’s casual yet sharp, visually interesting and unique while still being seasonally appropriate. It’s always helpful to build your outfit around a warm outer layer like the rugged Faherty Brand CPO Jacket, while the crisp Taylor Stitch Everyday Chambray Shirt is rugged and perfectly matched for an afternoon or evening sampling delicious craft beer. Perhaps the coolest part of this outfit (in the opinion of your humble editor)? It’s gotta be Stetson Brazos Hat, a truly unique change of pace that adds some old-school flair to this look. Bonus? It just looks like something you’d wear to knock back a few rounds. For mobility and versatile style to move from brewery to brewpub to taco truck (just me?), the Proof Rover Pants are going to wear like jeans and move like chinos. They’ll sit quite nicely atop the surprisingly refined Danner Jack II Brogue Boots, as good as it gets when it comes to the best men’s boots for winter — agreed? And pieces like the classic, truly timeless Laco Aachen 42 Watch are going to stand up to whatever your day has in store — while keeping your flight-tasting session in check. Lastly, since you’ll be on your feet all day, comfortable socks are harder to come by than you’d think — that’s why I vouch for these Danner socks so much. Last but not least, you’re going to need to bring your wallet with you — might as well make it a stylish leather wallet from the great folks at Taylor Stitch, right? So, that’s going to wrap up this #OOTD. The key takeaway here? Heading to a brewery or a cool cocktail bar can be every bit as great a chance to flex your rugged style favorites as more adventure-minded, outdoors-y winter style pursuits. Prepare accordingly, and bring me a beer while you’re at it, will ya?

See Now, Buy Now: The Lisboa Francisco Flannel Works with Your Entire Winter Wardrobe

A unique flannel shirt that bucks the lumberjack-type trend.

Don’t have a warm, cozy and stylish flannel shirt in your winter wardrobe? Particularly as we approach the end of November (and Thanksgiving!), it’s pretty critical that you get that taken care of. And in that regard, the Lisboa Francisco Flannel Shirt is going to be the flannel shirt of your dreams. OK, that’s high praise … but it’s true, at least in some senses.  And if you’ve been keeping up with the blog — I sure hope you have! — you’ll know that we’ve been slowly but surely shifting our attention toward winter style essentials, the type of classic and timeless pieces that are going to keep your warm in style this season.  And hey, if you need a SUPER last-minute shirt to wear for Thanksgiving this year? Give the Lisboa Francisco Flannel Shirt  a shot. Rest assured, this isn’t your average flannel — the Navy Clay Plaid color and pattern is much more unique than a standard red-and-black flannel, for starters. The Lisboa Francisco Flannel Shirt also takes a bit of a different approach than your typical flannel workshirt, cut slim to wear on its own or beneath a navy herringbone blazer for more dressy style. The organic cotton of the Lisboa Francisco Flannel Shirt is also brushed for softness — no scratchy texture here, no sir.

And when you feel like switching things up from a classic Oxford shirt or a timeless chambray shirt, the Lisboa Francisco Flannel Shirt  is a unique option that pairs with slim tan chinos, your favorite pair of broken-in denim, or navy corduroys in equal measure. If there was such a thing as a “grab-and-go” shirt, the type of shirt you throw on and then forget about, it would be the Lisboa Francisco Flannel Shirt. It’s as suited to layer over a thermal henley as it is to wear with a textured knit tie, slim blue denim and classic chukka boots to the office. Don’t believe me? Well, then … you simply must try the Lisboa Francisco Flannel Shirt for yourself.

Are you going to add the Lisboa Francisco Flannel Shirt to your wardrobe this winter?

Style Pick of the Week: Billy Reid Dempsey Jacket

A remarkable coat from a standout style purveyor in Billy Reid.

Do you ever pick a jacket out of a lineup and think to yourself … “Whoa. That jacket is AMAZING.” Such was the case for yours truly with the Billy Reid Dempsey Jacket, a truly stunning early winter coat that just might be one of the best men’s winter jackets — believe you me. It’s made with the kind of care and attention to detail that can only come from a designer who’s honed his chops getting all the small details right, from making the perfect American-made Oxford to developing a rugged pair of beautiful selvedge denim. Of course, the Bond Peacoat is a prime example of this approach, as is the new Billy Reid Dempsey Jacket, the kind of jacket you’re going to want to wear every single day of the week. True to form, it blends a rugged, old-school appeal with an edgy sort of style that wouldn’t look out of place at a cool speakeasy or a rock concert — seriously a piece like the Billy Reid Dempsey Jacket can very nearly do it all. Heck, the outer shell is water and wind-resistant, so it can take on highland hikes as readily as it can take on a gourmet dinner-and-drinks date.

Lined with faux fur and featuring a stand-up collar.

That’s relatively unique among weather-ready winter outerwear, but again, no one said the Billy Reid Dempsey Jacket  was trying to blend into the crowd. The stand-up collar adds a bit of an edge, similar to the classic Harrington jacket, while the rich Navy color is dressy and yet rugged all at once. To keep a long story short, the Billy Reid Dempsey Jacket is going to wear easily with beat-up moc toe leather boots, indigo denim and a thermal henley … and then you can turn right around and wear it in place of a blazer atop a classic Oxford shirt-knit tie combo at the office. For maximum adventure potential, the Billy Reid Dempsey Jacket even features water-resistant flap and button closures — make no mistake, this is a jacket for the modern man, done up in homage to classic field coat styles. What does that mean for you? It means it’s going to live up to the name, the billing and yes, the price tag (nearly $700). When you consider how far you can go when wearing the Billy Reid Dempsey Jacket though, I’ll think you’ll consider it a fine purchase. Who else is on board with that?

#OOTD: How To Dress for Thanksgiving This Year

Let’s get down to business — what’s your favorite holiday? Is it Thanksgiving? And if so, do you have any idea what to wear for Thanksgiving this year? This #OOTD answers at least one of those questions for you … you can figure out the rest. It’s a tricky holiday, in that it still calls for your best men’s style essentials, yet tailored to the situation. Perhaps you might need to add a stylish blazer to the below ensemble, or even *gasp* a tie. Conversely, maybe you need to ditch the handsome Aymar James Sweater (the centerpiece of our outfit) in favor of going solo with the Flint and Tinder Garment-Dyed Oxford and some classic five-pocket pants from Faherty Brand. And there are other considerations at play — perhaps you’re heading to visit family, or you’re meeting your significant other’s parents (gulp), or you’re just spending leisurely downtime with friends. Regardless, the situation calls for truly classic fall style essentials that can spring into action when the rubber meets the road. Specifically, that’s where a pair of footwear like the Rhodes Dean Boots come into playin this ensemble (as you’ll see below). They work for holiday travel, they work for Thanksgiving itself, they work for Black Friday shopping, and they’re refined and stylish enough to leave a lasting impression on anyone you run into at the bar on Wednesday night. How are you tailoring this #OOTD to make it work for you? Let me know on Twitter— enjoy the holiday, my friends!

Just one way you should dress for Thanksgiving dinner.

  • The Sweater: Aymar James Sweater, $150 — If it’s too warm to layer up where you are, ditch this stylish sweater in favor of the shirt on its own. If not? The Aymar James Sweater could be a new favorite.
  • The Shirt: Flint and Tinder Garment-Dyed Oxford, $98 — Assuredly, a classic Oxford shirt is timeless all year around. But this Flint and Tinder Garment-Dyed Oxford is especially fitting for a nice holiday outing.
  • The Pants: Faherty Brand Comfort Twill 5-Pocket Pants, $148 — Just as you can wear these stylish five-pocket pants in a fashion that’s a bit more rugged (see this #OOTD), you can also dress ’em up a bit for Turkey Day.
  • The Stylish Leather Boots: Rhodes Dean Boots, $220 — A handsome profile, beautiful leather and that cool cap toe detail make these dressy enough for Thanksgiving and laidback enough for a bar visit the night before.
  • The Socks: Anonymousism Zigzag Crew Links Socks, $24 — The little details go a long way, and stylish socks (sans holes!) are a must when padding around the house once you’ve taken off your Rhodes Dean Boots.
  • The Belt: Red Wing Heritage Pioneer Leather Belt, $89 — Trust me, considering the length of time you’ll have the Red Wing Heritage Pioneer Leather Belt, it’s worth buying in advance of Thanksgiving.
  • The Watch: Laco Aachen 42 Watch, $369 — A special holiday calls for a special watch — this  handsome leather watch from Laco checks all the right boxes.
  • The Gift for Your Host: Bespoke Post Over Easy Box, $45 (When Signing Up for Bespoke Post) — Meeting your significant other’s parents? Staying with friends? Just heading home to family? This Bespoke Post box right here is a fun and welcome Thanksgiving host gift.

Now, who’s excited for Thanksgiving dinner yet? I know I am. And I hope you’re excited to dress in style for the day. If you see chilly weather in the forecast, there’s no better route to go than layering up with a rugged sweater like the Aymar James Sweater — it perfectly complements a classic Oxford shirt for easygoing-yet-polished style. And since you’re going to be relying on comfort for your lower half, the Faherty Brand Comfort Twill 5-Pocket Pants are sharper than sweatpants, but fit and feel like denim. And again, if you see inclement weather ahead — or if you simply love a stylish pair of leather boots — you can’t possibly misstep with the excellent Rhodes Dean Boots a wining style to wear for Thanksgiving and through the holidays. In the way of accessories, I’d say Thanksgiving is a holiday where you should swing for the fences — getting the chance to wear my dad’s Rolex (Hi, Dad!) one year drove home that point nicely. So, the beautiful Laco leather watch shown above gets it right. The same can be said for your newly upgraded leather belt: The Red Wing Heritage Pioneer Leather Belt. If you don’t eat too many extra helpings of Thanksgiving dinner, that is.  And to top things all off? Step into stylish socks, then show up with the Bespoke Post Over Easy Box.  Your perfect Thanksgiving weekend awaits with this #OOTD. Thanks for reading!

Style Pick of the Week: Taylor Stitch Montara Jacket

Will you look as good as this dude, or Steve McQueen, or Daniel Craig, wearing a Harrington jacket? Maybe?

When it comes to menswear essentials, there are certain critical pieces that really never go out of style. The classic Oxford shirt. Slim blue jeans. The perfect white T-shirt. And now — especially for fall and winter — the iconic Harrington jacket. And if you think you know everything there is to know about this essential piece, think again: The  Taylor Stitch Montara Jacket, exclusive to our friends at Huckberry, is here to shake up what you thought you knew about this style. Favored by menswear luminaries and rugged gentlemen like Mr. Steve McQueen and Mr. Daniel Craig as James Bond, the iconic Harrington jacket — and more specifically in the case of today’s post, the Taylor Stitch Montara Jacket is a tried-and-true style that works well in inclement weather, layers up with ease, and goes with just about anything in your wardrobe — more than worthy of today’s entry as the coveted Style Pick of the Week, right? Certainly.

SHOP: The Taylor Stitch Montara Jacket via Huckberry

A handsome, rugged and stylish jacket. Perfect, right?

In the case of the Taylor Stitch Montara Jacket, it starts with the cotton-nylon shell, made to ward off weather and layer up over a rugged crewneck sweater or a classic chambray shirt. The beauty of the classic Harrington jacket is in its versatility — the style is laidback enough to wear with something like a rugged henley, and yet it looks equally sharp atop a slim dress shirt or an essential Oxford shirt. And of course, the Taylor Stitch Montara Jacket is among the finest options you’ve got on the market for a classic style that works any day of the week. The custom Taylor Stitch print on the interior lining — 100 percent cotton, mind you — offers extra warmth in the fall chill, while the corduroy-lined collar calls back to classic field jackets. The stand-up collar is also another signifier of a classic Harrington jacket, which makes it an easy and polished option to wear for all manner of style situations — including fall and winter travel, or a laidback weekend coffee run. The Taylor Stitch Montara Jacket is every bit as stylish and versatile as the rest of the brand’s gear — it even features handwarmer pockets, making it more hard-wearing than other, more lightweight Harrington jackets. What could be better than that? Well, if you’ve made it this far, then it’s worth pointing out that the handsome Taylor Stitch Montara Jacket will set you back just $149.98. Yep. Under $150 for a stylish fall jacket that wears easily with your favorite men’s style essentials, from dark denim to flannel shirting to rugged leather boots. The point is this: The classic Harrington jacket is a seasonal style must-have. And the Taylor Stitch Montara Jacket is the one to buy. Bingo!
