The Thursday Buy: This Billy Reid Fisherman Sweater Is a Perfectly Rugged Fall Style Move

There are some times when it makes perfect sense to go with a rugged classic, times when a brisk breeze beckons and you need a layer to stand up to that weather. In those times, my friends, I’d certainly reach for the Billy Reid Fisherman Sweater. If you’ve kept up with this very blog, you know that the Alabama-based designer reinvents the classics on a near-daily basis, and in this instance, that means taking inspiration from a burly, old-school fisherman sweater and then turning it into the one and only Billy Reid Fisherman Sweater.

That also means using rich and rugged 100 percent wool construction, a handsome raglan-sleeve knit for mobility, and then offering up classic colorways like navy and olive for the instant smash hit that is the Billy Reid Fisherman Sweater.

If that sounds like precisely what you need in your knitwear rotation this season, give Billy Reid a shot, be prepared to invest (the Billy Reid Fisherman Sweater will set you back $298), and then revel in cozy comfort this spring. It’s yours for the taking, my friends.

See Now, Buy Now: Billy Reid Teamed Up With Citizens of Humanity On Your New Favorite Jeans

Citizens of Humanity x Billy Reid

There’s always a lot going on, it seems, in the menswear world (which you know all too well if you keep up with this blog!). There are plentiful collaborations to sort through on a daily basis, but when one has a narrow focus for a great cause — in this case, sustainably making some of the best men’s jeans on the market — it’s enough to make you sit up, take notice and secure your pair ASAP.

In this instance, the new collaboration in question is one I’ve personally tried out and can certainly vouch for: To keep it simple, Billy Reid and Citizens of Humanity just made your new favorite pair of jeans. Join me as we dive in a bit further, yes?

Best indigo blue jeans for men.

The idea is fairly simple, and I think you’ll love the results. The all-American designer, best known for making James Bond’s peacoat of choice (along with rugged-yet-luxe takes on the classics) teamed up with one of his personal favorite brands on a stylish denim capsule collection. Not a bad thing to keep in mind as holiday dressing season ramps up, right?

And the idea is about as customized as it gets, too: Billy Reid took on the Adler Jean, a fan favorite at Citizens of Humanity, and worked with the brand to design three exclusive washes, ranging from a dressy, crisp dark blue indigo to a more casual, faded indigo stretch jean.

I’ve tried out the Medium Indigo Jeans and have found them comfortable, made to move and made to go everywhere from a brewery to a Brooklyn rock show. The denim fabric is also soft right out of the box, and the little details are a work of art (seriously!).

And the fit is of the utmost importance here, too. It’s also worth noting that since this is ultra-premium men’s denim we’re talking about here, these are an investment at $278 — but trust me when I say that in my personal experience, they’re more than worth it.

These lean more towards a slim-straight fit in my experience, with a higher rise, a more full waist and a taper down to the ankle. In short, the Billy Reid x Citizens of Humanity Jeans hit all the right notes, all the while featuring details like a handsome custom leather patch and subtle branding. Folks, your new favorite pair of jeans awaits.

The Tuesday Steal: Save 20 Percent On This Versatile Everyday Shirt from Marine Layer & Huckberry

Marine Layer men's shirts.

As I build out my wardrobe season after season, I tend to look for versatile workhorse pieces that exist in two realms: One, as casual, everyday options (as with my favorite Oxford shirt) and two, picks that can also be dressed up a touch if needed. Those men’s style essentials are of course sold in spades by Huckberry, which is where we kick off today’s Tuesday Steal.

And to get more specific, the Marine Layer Theo Texture Shirt as seen above qualifies quite nicely as an everyday pick you can style a few different ways. It’s not quite as rugged as one of the best men’s flannel shirts, yet it’s got more texture than a sleek cotton sateen dress shirt that you’d wear to the office.

Yet, add a cotton blazer or one of the best flannel blazers over it, and it’s going to clean up quite nicely indeed. Oh, and the real kicker here? It’s on sale for 20 percent off via the always well-stocked Huckberry Sale section.

The Marine Layer Theo Texture Shirt is also unique in its construction: Whereas styles like the Oxford shirt are made with 100 percent cotton Oxford fabric, this more easygoing buttondown shirt is made from a lightweight blend of cotton and TENCEL.

That means it’s not as hearty as a flannel shirt jacket, so you’ll need to layer up the Marine Layer Theo Texture Shirt on especially cold days. But for the price, and for 20 percent off, the crisply cut, stylish and versatile Marine Layer Theo Texture Shirt seems like a downright steal. Go forth accordingly, my friends.

See Now, Buy Now: This Filson Flannel Shirt is a True Cold-Weather Must-Have

Filson men's flannel shirt.

I’ve said it many a time before and I’ll certainly say it again: Whether it’s a Filson work jacket or a classic Filson shirt, the right menswear goes a long way when the going gets tough (and cold, and snowy) this season. And so here we are, rolling into brisk seasonal weather and looking to shore up your rotation of casual rugged shirts, and once again, the Pacific Northwest heritage masters at Filson are the proper place to go.

There’s a Filson men’s flannel shirt for every occasion and at every fabric weight, be it the Lightweight Alaskan Guide Shirt (a personal favorite of mine) or something a bit more burly, like the Filson Flannel Service Shirt shown here.

It’s made to be a daily workhorse of a shirt — after all, Filson builds all of its men’s shirts to a high standard — and it’s crafted from 7 oz. 100 percent cotton for a nice, midweight feel and finish. Of course, the hits keep on rolling from there.

Filson men's shirt.

In fact, the famed outdoor brand modeled this particular shirt after old-school military shirts, right down to the simple patch chest pocket and the spread collar sans buttons. It’s a shirt that’s stylish enough to wear with your favorite pair of blue jeans, but particularly rugged enough to wear beneath a Filson waxed jacket alongside Filson work pants when duty calls.

Filson flannel shirt for men.

Helpfully, it comes in both an earthy green plaid option and a red-and-blue version that’s a bit lighter in color and more vivid than other variations on that color scheme. The Filson Flannel Service Shirt lives up to its name, with a classic fit that should offer room to layer a thermal shirt or your favorite henley underneath, too.

You should also note the dual rear shoulder pleats, which provide ease of movement when you wear this shirt for rough-and-tumble workwear situations.

It’s got a Filson limited lifetime guarantee of quality, never a bad thing to have in your closet alongside other Filson menswear essentials. And while it’s not the fanciest shirt you’re apt to own, I’d say the Filson Flannel Service Shirt gets the job done in terms of casually rugged style and performance. If all that looks great on paper to you, then consider your next flannel shirt purchase sorted.

The Sunday Sale: Save 30 Percent On This Cozy Mott and Bow Hoodie for Fall Weekend Lounging

Mott and Bow hoodie review.

When you know, you just know. That is to say, when a fall weekend dawns crisp and cold, sometimes, the only thing to do is reach for, say, one of the best hoodies for men and then turn up your space heater or rile up a fire. And today, or at least for the rest of the fall, one of the best men’s hoodies is also coming at ya courtesy of the brand that makes your favorite blue jeans: Mott and Bow.

That’s because the Mott and Bow Hooper French Terry Hoodie is now 30 percent off (marked down to $69.90 from $99), and that’s as great a reason as any to add it to your rotation of casual style essentials. I’ve tried out this hoodie on many a crisp fall day in Brooklyn, and I’ve also worn plenty of Mott and Bow men’s jeans over the years (as you can see in my Mott and Bow reviews).

Mott and Bow men's sweatshirts.

And on that note: Allow me to say that this hoodie is the perfect complementary piece to those jeans, made with soft yet durable French Terry fabric that’s just the right weight to wear over one of the best men’s henleys or your go-to Mott and Bow T-shirt. It’s a medium-weight 100 percent cotton French Terry hoodie with sturdy hardware as well.

And while it’s nowhere near as burly as the American Giant Classic Full-Zip, it’s a plenty reliable hoodie — available in classic colors! — for cozy fall and winter weekends at home. That sounds quite ideal, doesn’t it? With a few clicks, this expertly crafted casual hoodie can be yours.

Style Pick of the Week: Buck Mason Italian Flannel Blazer – A Refined Seasonal Style Move

Best men's fall blazers.

If you’ve kept up with the blog on the regular, you’re more than aware of the excellent, all-American style being put out seemingly every week (and certainly every season) by the good folks at Buck Mason.

They’re one of my personal favorite brands — and they’re one of the best menswear brands around — thanks to an emphasis on rugged, timeless staples, be it Eddie Bauer x Buck Mason bomber jackets or the best crewneck shirts on the market.

But what about those times when duty calls and you need a more refined look? Yes, Buck Mason can assuredly help you there: Just dive into Buck Mason casual suiting (as we will very shortly!) and update your shopping list accordingly. Let’s start things off with a more specific look at the Buck Mason Italian Wool Flannel Blazer, a new launch from a brand that takes an easygoing-yet-utterly classic approach to tailoring.

In this case, that means pieces like the Buck Mason Italian Wool Flannel Blazer aren’t stuffy, uncomfortable or overly padded or structured at the shoulders or through the body of the jacket. Translation: If you feel uncomfortable wearing a more traditional blazer, I’d wager you won’t feel that uncomfortable in the slightest wearing the pleasingly casual-leaning Buck Mason Italian Wool Flannel Blazer.

Best fall suit for men.

Even more specifically, the brand drew inspiration from the effortlessly cool Ivy Leage stylings — blazers, Oxford shirting, chinos — that was filtered through Hollywood’s golden age by everyone from Fred Astaire to Steve McQueen.

Not bad for a blazer that can be yours for under $500, right? Heck, team the Buck Mason Italian Wool Flannel Blazer with the brand’s Graduate Pant, and you’re looking at a seriously cool, comfortable suit for men in a seasonally friendly, rich Italian fabric. Note that this suit does feature full-canvas construction for more shape, but it shouldn’t prove restrictive in the slightest.

It’s also designed with a classic 3-roll-2 look — three buttons grace the front of the jacket, but the lapels roll down to the second button. It’s an old-school, classy touch I certainly appreciate (and I hope you feel the same!).

It’s a huge added bonus that the brand that makes your favorite henley can also make your new favorite casual suit — one you can even style with the brand’s Oxford shirting and dark blue denim or chinos for an expert business casual look. Take a chance on the laidback style of the Buck Mason Italian Wool Flannel Blazer, then be prepared to wear it through fall and well into winter.

The Friday Read: The Glent Grant Scotch & Designer Menswear from SER.O.YA

The Glen Grant 21=Year Scotch

My friends, let’s roll right into Friday in fine fall fashion. If you keep up with my many freelance writing pursuits (in addition to putting out daily stories on this blog!), then perhaps you’re well aware of my growing interest in the world of Scotch (and bourbon).

I started as a fan years ago, then wrote for sites like GearMoose, and discovered it’s a great field in which you learn by doing (in this case, tasting). It’s one that nicely complements my passion for all things menswear, too. After all, nothing goes together quite like a dram of campfire bourbon and a waxed trucker jacket, or a finely crafted Oxford shirt and a sip of Scotch.

Luxury Miami boutique hotel.

It was the “Oxford shirt and sip of Scotch” combination that I enjoyed these past few days, as I trekked down to tropical Miami — a change of pace from the fall confines of Brooklyn! — to enjoy a series of Scotch releases from The Glen Grant. We also tried an exclusive Scotch releasing next month, one which you can read all about in the weeks ahead from yours truly.

But that trip was a change of pace for another reason: I had to put away my rugged leather jacket and my favorite henley, and dress instead in light and breezy menswear. That meant I reached for a new knit polo from New York’s own SER.O.YA, an upstart brand blending the aesthetics of streetwear, sportswear and a touch of prep. My pick? The Axel Fitted Polo, which proved a nice move in the heat of Miami.

They’re favored by celebs and athletes alike, so keep a weather eye out for that pre-tunnel footage of your favorite ballplayer rocking SER.O.YA.

The result of that intersection of style and sportier tastes is a series of classically inspired pieces, like the sweater polo I tried out above, plus edgier staples like distressed denim, slouchy T-shirts and graphic tees and hoodies. It all spoke of big city style, making that polo perfect to wear in Miami (perhaps you saw mine on my Instagram Stories!).

I’d urge you to give the brand a look for yourself, and in the meantime, check back tomorrow for the first of two fall weekend style dispatches, as per tradition. Cheers and stay stylish!

The Thursday Buy: This Bonobos Overshirt Is one of the Coolest Layers You Can Wear This Season

Best men's overshirt for fall.

In my book, one of the best times of the year — no perhaps, the best time of the year for menswear — is fall. Or rather, fall right on the verge of winter. In fact, we’re right smack dab in the middle of the perfect time for fall menswear essentials.

A brisk breeze carries leaves on the air, there’s still time aplenty for fall park strolls, bonfires and whiskey sipping, and one of the best men’s overshirts can help you do it all. I find myself wearing one of the best overshirts for men on a near-daily basis these days.

If you’re in the same boat, I think you’ll find today’s change of pace from one of the best online menswear brands — that’d be Bonobos — a nice move.

You’ll certainly find some of the best new fall menswear within the Bonobos New Arrivals section, including the Bonobos Corduroy Overshirt in question today. Now, here’s the catch: The traditional overshirt, with its thicker fabric and larger buttons, wears like a jacket, as opposed to, say, one of the best chambray shirts for men.

The Bonobos Corduroy Overshirt has many of those same qualities, but the fabric is a swerve. It’s a rich, velvety corduroy, as opposed to a harder-wearing material like flannel, so it’s got a more elegant look and feel to it. Of course, the hits keep on rolling for this lauded menswear retailer.

Best corduroy overshirt for men.

It features slightly oversized buttons and two handy button chest pockets for maximum utility, and the rich Port Wine color option shown here is a perfectly appropriate touch for the season at hand. It also comes in classic colors like Black, and a rich Tuscan Olive that would wear nicely with charcoal dress trousers or even dressier dark blue jeans.

Bonobos men's shirt jacket review.

With the Bonobos Corduroy Overshirt, you’ve surely got options. Even the lightweight contrasting-flannel cuff and collar detailing sets this handsome overshirt apart from the pack. Bonobos rightfully calls your new favorite overshirt “classic and comfortable,” and I could see it wearing seamlessly over everything from your favorite henley to a turtleneck for a dash of refined fall and winter style.

Sure, the Bonobos Corduroy Overshirt is a touch different than a rugged denim or flannel workshirt, but it’s no less a worthy option as you bolster your rotation of the best fall and winter menswear. We’ll see you out there, my friends.

See Now, Buy Now: The Tie Bar Is Making the Best White Dress Shirt This Season

The Tie Bar white dress shirt review.

For as much as I love to wear rugged menswear on the daily, be it one of the best men’s henleys or a classic leather jacket, I know (and you know!) that there’s a time and a place where refined dressing is of the utmost importance.

That’s never more true than the holidays: Evening dinners, office parties, even a dressed-up visit with (gulp) your in-laws might lend itself to looking polished and proper. There’s no time like the present to start preparing, I say.

Sounds a bit intimidating, right? No need to fear, because comfort, style and affordability are just a few clicks away with one of my favorite places to buy tailoring online. I’m talking, of course, about The Tie Bar.

I’ve had a rotation of stylish men’s ties from The Tie Bar in my closet for years, but you might have overlooked the brand’s sharply cut dress shirts. Not anymore though, and they’re even making one of the best white dress shirts just in time for your refined holiday occasions (and days at the office, and nights on the town).

Heck, The Tie Bar even partnered with Miller High Life on a range of fun fall accessories, but let’s talk about The Tie Bar’s Herringbone White Dress Shirt, shall we?

Best white dress shirt for men.

It features a crisp white colorway with a subtle herringbone construction and a non-iron design, so it should resist wrinkles. The semi-spread collar is also highly versatile among men’s dress shirts — it wears remarkably well with a tie, but the collar is crisp enough to wear sans tie underneath a sweater from The Tie Bar (for instance).

What’s even better right now is that this high-quality men’s dress shirt is a nice deal when bundled (get 3 for $150, for instance. Of course, you can also get 10 percent off your first order of $99 at The Tie Bar, complete with free shipping, so perhaps it’s in your best interest to pick up a selection of dress shirts and some of the most affordable men’s ties on the market, yes? At least, that’s my take.

And if you’ve been searching for stylish men’s clothing for work, this white shirt can more than pull double-duty for your 9-to-5 and beyond. You already know The Tie Bar for exceptionally well-priced men’s accessories — this season, give The Tie Bar’s men’s dress shirts a good, long look. Cheers and happy shopping, my friends.
