#OOTD: How to Dress for a Business Casual Office This Winter

How are you dressing for the office this winter? Perhaps you’ve been layering up for some time and are starting to hit a bit of a rut? That’s where today’s #OOTD comes into play. We’re going to have some fun with this one by shaking up the rugged layers you’d normally wear on a fall or winter weekend (including a classic flannel shirt), and we’re going to translate them to your 9-to-5 grind (especially if you work in a business casual office). That seems to be the case with most office environments these days, so that’s why we’ll kick it off with an office-ready flannel shirt and go from there. To wit: The same Faherty Brand flannel shirt you love to wear on the weekend (seen below) works in perfect harmony at the office when paired up with other favorites (like a casual knit blazer for a bit of polish and laidback cool). Other essentials are also critical here, including a classic pair of men’s denim for the ultimate in business casual style. The great thing about these picks is that, yes, you can also wear them during off-duty hours, too. But when you need to pull it all together? Once again, today’s  #OOTD makes it all happen. It’s cozy, it’s casual, it’s cool … and it’ll still turn heads (the right way) at the water cooler. Let’s get to work.

Layer up with a cozy flannel shirt and a classic knit blazer for all your winter office style needs.

So, who’s ready to head back to the office? OK, perhaps you’re not mentally ready to dive into work after a long holiday … but ideally, this #OOTD  will get you in the right frame of mind. Again, it’s all about taking pieces you’ve got in your rotation and then updating them for the office — that means your go-to top layer is the casual knit blazer from Grayers for a bit of easygoing yet office-minded style. It’s a nice complement to an office-ready flannel shirt from a brand that makes each and every piece with comfort and yet modern refinement in mind. Crucially, that whole combo works quite nicely with some of the best men’s denim — it’s a surefire business-casual winner, no doubt about it. Of course, things only get better when you step out with some of the best men’s dress boots, a pair uniquely suited to the office and the commute. The same can certainly be said of the Zodiac Grandville Watch you’re wearing for your next day at work — it’s a perfectly versatile everyday watch, and you can keep it handy for the weekend, too. Lest we forget, the reason this whole ensemble works so well is that you really CAN wear it outside — that’s where one of the best men’s winter parkas comes into play. When you round it all out with a pair of CHUP socks and Duke Cannon’s Proper Cologne, you can be sure your accessories are sealing the deal in terms of this office-ready #OOTD. Like what you see? The ideal casual watch for everyday wear this winter could be this stylish Jack Mason timepiece — inspired by aviation and the art of flight, this sleek leather watch is perfect for both business casual and weekend style settings. Trust me, I’ve tested it out (as you might have seen on my Instagram).

Duke Cannon Beer and Bourbon Box — $25

The Heavy Bag Henley is made with upcycled fabric and features a comfortable-yet-flattering fit — one of the best men’s henleys I’ve tested.
Harpoon Brewery Winter Warmer — Price Varies

A rich winter beer to warm dark, cold nights.

The aptly named Harpoon Brewery Winter Warmer is one of the best beers for winter, all owing to its classically inspired recipe (cinnamon and nutmeg feature heavily), along with its long lineage — it’s been brewed since 1988, after all. I’m a big fan after testing it out courtesy of the brewery (thanks, guys!), and I think you’ll appreciate it, too.

Mott and Bow Connor Heavy Cable Crew — $225

A tough henley that pulls no punches in terms of standout style.

Of course, it really wouldn’t be an edition of The List if we didn’t recommend one of the best men’s henleys — the pleasingly rugged Flint and Tinder Raglan Waffle Henley is the perfect henley to wear under a flannel shirt (and that’s just one styling option).

Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey — Price Varies

A “proper” whiskey that pays homage to Conor McGregor’s hometown.

From MMA champion Conor McGregor comes a triple-distilled Irish whiskey (featuring golden grains and vanilla, honey and toasted wood notes) — this whiskey in particular pays homage to MacGregor’s hometown of Dublin & the Crumlin, Dublin 12 neighborhood specifically. It’s the perfect whiskey to try on a cold winter weekend — preferably surrounded by friends. I’ve tried it, and I can vouch for it. Cheers!

Let me know your thoughts on these picks over on Twitter. Let’s get out there!

In fact, I highly recommend it. Now, as I’m sure you know, it’s New Year’s Eve. Presumably, you’re prepared for the big night? See Now, Buy Now: The Mark Albert Uptown Boots are the Rugged Boots You Need Now

Perfectly rugged, dependable boots to invest in now, then wear all winter.

The right pair of winter boots can go a long way — a really long way — in determining the success of your style ensemble (and your mobility, for that matter) when it comes to getting around during these chilly, snowy times. And with that being said, there’s no better pair of men’s boots to invest in at the moment than the rugged Mark Albert Uptown Boots, some of the best leather boots to slip your feet into for December (and beyond, naturally). Part of the exceptional Huckberry Fall 2019 Catalog (and a hot-selling pair of boots, at that), I’d be willing to bet you don’t quite have a pair like the Mark Albert Uptown Boots in your current rotation. And if you’re already acquainted with Mark Albert boots? Well, best to give a new pair a shot for a new season, ehh? The thing with these rugged leather boots is that they’re aged to perfection already, so they’ll look like you’ve had them for years (thanks to the premium kudu leather), yet you can still break them in all on your own. And given that you’re going to find yourself needing boots for all occasions this season, you’ll have plenty of chances to break ’em in nicely.

SHOP: The Mark Albert Uptown Boots via the Huckberry Fall 2019 Catalog

A tough Vibram outsole helps separate these boots from the pack.

These boots aren’t quite a pair of L.L. Bean boots made to brave the snow, but for days and evenings when you’re not trudging through a blizzard, these Mark Albert boots should do more than just fine. The relatively sleek profile is offset by a durable Vibram outsole for extra grip on slushy streets, while the rich kudu leather pairs quite nicely with casual style picks like slim faded denim and your favorite henley. All of this is to say, these boots assuredly combine form and function quite handsomely, without a doubt. And when you’re hunting down a pair of the best boots for winter, that’s exactly what you need, is it not?

Style Pick of the Week: Duke Cannon Proper Cologne

Only the best men’s cologne you can buy now.

Quick, tell me: What cologne are you going to wear on New Year’s Eve? Yes, that’s right. This is an oddly specific men’s grooming question today on the blog, but the good news is, I’ve got the answer as to cologne for your New Year’s Eve, and well beyond that: The answer, my friends, comes from Duke Cannon and the Duke Cannon Proper Cologne. It’s a recent introduction to the storied Duke Cannon line of grooming essentials, and a type of cologne that you’re going to want to wear every single day — not just on New Year’s Eve (although you should wear it then, too). If you read the blog, you’re likely familiar with Duke Cannon, but here’s the scoop: The Minnesota-based brand makes no-fuss men’s grooming goods, like its “Big Ass Brick of Soap” and its standout beard oils and balms, that simply don’t mess around. It’s pretty great, as well, that Duke Cannon’s grooming goods are inspired by the military (the aforementioned soap bricks are inspired by ones issued to Korean War soldiers), with a portion of proceeds going to veteran’s organizations. So, that’s a nice bonus if you happen to also be shopping for the best new cologne on the market. And again, this cologne really does pass muster.

SHOP: Duke Cannon Proper Cologne

Shown here is the Prescott, one of multiple essential scents you can get from Duke Cannon..

The thing about the truly excellent Duke Cannon Proper Cologne is that it combines all the properties that make Duke Cannon products so essential — the range of scents, from Randolph (with bergamot, lavender and leather) to Prescott (citrus, oakmoss and tonka) is highly versatile, for starters. Even the design of this cologne is well-considered, as the bottle is sleek and the graphic design on this cologne is refined yet rugged, and perfectly stylish. That is to say, this Duke Cannon cologne isn’t like the colognes clogging up valuable space at a big-box department store — it’s modern and refreshing, and again, it’s some of the best men’s cologne you can buy now. But let’s go back to why you should wear it on New Year’s Eve — any of these scents are refined, versatile and simply great-smelling. It’s that sort of finishing touch that’ll elevate any New Year’s ensemble you wear — and heck, any outfit you put together at any time of year, including this winter. If that all sounds like just what you need, then grab the Duke Cannon Proper Cologne now.

I hope you’re gearing up for a relaxing weekend with family and friends, or a more adventurous time on the road — either way, today’s Friday Read is going to get you sorted out in short order. I also hope you got something on your Christmas wish list — I know I certainly did, and I loved spending a relaxing week in Florida with family, celebrating in the fun and the sun (as seen on my Instagram).

This weekend though, I’m back in New York and excited despite the cold — in addition to a laidback weekend in Brooklyn, I’m venturing into Manhattan today for a very unique reason. Notably, my alma mater, my beloved Michigan State Spartans, are playing in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium to close out this season! It’s going to be a bitterly cold affar (as any college football game at Yankee Stadium should be), but I’m still beyond excited to see my Spartans right here in NYC. Before the game, I’d say a pint or two will be in order at this weekend’s MSU hub, Stan’s Sports Bar. The rest of the weekend, I’ll be getting out and about in Prospect Park (likely wearing some of my favorite boots and a tough waxed trucker jacket) — how about you? Let me know on Twitter, and let’s keep things rolling along in fine form with the rest of today’s Friday Read — cheers!
