Best men's dress watches

The new dress watch that’s going to help you reset your style for the new year — or close out this one the right way.

Here at The Style Guide, we’ve previously covered one of the best men’s watches to buy … for the field. Not necessarily that ultra-dressy night that lies ahead of you: New Year’s Eve. Granted, not everyone’s end to 2018 involves suiting up and hitting the town, but if that’s what your plans involve, I’d say we’ve got the watch for you. By we, I mean me — your team of one. And if you happen to just be looking for a stylish new watch to kick off 2019 the right way? Well, that’s all the better. Style Pick of the Week: O.N.S. Clothing Dominic Bomber

A new classic — highly stylish and functional.

On the hunt for one of the best men’s jackets for winter? Search no more, because I’d wager I found it. And that jacket, my friends, would be the O.N.S Clothing Dominic Bomber, a rugged, durable & simply cool old-school jacket you can wear with nearly anything. It channels the type of throwback style born of much-needed functionality; it’s easy to see the O.N.S Clothing Dominic Bomber being worn on the deck of a ship or on the chilly coast during a rainstorm. That’s how the brand approaches designig its gear, and that’s great news for all of us who could use a wardrobe upgrade. Right? In my mind, the O.N.S Clothing Dominic Bomber is absolutely one of the the best men’s jackets your money can buy. Make no mistake, it’s an investment at $428, but your wardrobe will be all the better for it. Made from half-lambswool and half-nylon, it’s a classic cut that wears nicely with all manner of men’s style essentials, including slim tan chinos and a timeless chambray shirt. The faux shearling collar is also a badass style touch that’ll keep you warm no matter how chilly it gets, too. Can it get better? Actually, yes.

SHOP: The O.N.S Clothing Dominic Bomber

This coat really is the sort of style you just don’t see anymore, and that makes it all the better to wear with equally classic pieces like a rugged henley and your favorite pair of slim jeans. The quilted lining should also offer even more protection from the cold — make no mistake, the O.N.S Clothing Dominic Bomber has a lot going for it. The Dark Green color is also uniquely rich and distinctive, made to stand out stylishly in the grey depths of winter. It’s a sharp substitute for a blazer, and would wear nicely with a crisp Oxford shirt and slim wool trousers — just add handsome leather boots, and you’re set for the office holiday party or a tailored weekend happy hour.  How’s that for one of the best men’s jackets? Not bad at all, if you ask me. Again, it’s an investment at more than $400, but the O.N.S Clothing Dominic Bomber is going to give you returns in spades — to say the least. Again, it’s a jacket you can wear to channel more rugged style (think chore pants, a thermal shirt and the Huckberry Duck Boots) or a tailored look (a chambray dress shirt and a knit tie). Still not sold? Once you try this jacket, you will be.

Style Pick of the Week: Billy Reid Bond Peacoat

Billy Reid Bond Peacoat

The best peacoat on the market? There’s certainly nothing else like it.

Folks, there’s just no other way to look at it: The Billy Reid Bond Peacoat is an iconic jacket you need in your wardrobe this winter. Oh, and it’s worn by Mr. James Bond himself (as seen above). That’s it. That’s all there is to it. And if this classic peacoat wasn’t so well-made and uniquely stylish, that might be the end of this post. But trust me, there’s so much more to say about the exceptional Bond Peacoat from lauded American menswear designer Billy Reid. It’s great enough that it received prominent placement in the 2012 James Bond film “Skyfall” — of cours. The popularity of this coat (actually named for Bond Street in Manhattan) has only grown since then. Or is “legend” a more fitting word than “popularity”? At any rate, you can currently pick it up via the brand’s Web site, or via Huckberry — all the better, seeing as Huckberry is truly one of my favorite online shops for the stylish guy (that’s you!). That’s really just the start of what makes this coat so great. Now, we’ll be telling you all about how to wear this stylish peacoat in our #OOTD series in the coming days, but for now, let’s get down to business — the Bond Peacoat delivers in matters of style AND functionality, starting with the extremely warm double-woven melton wool construction. That alone makes it worth the *gulp* nearly-$700 price tag.

SHOP: The Billy Reid Bond Peacoat

It’s really not too often — try never — that you find a peacoat that so perfectly embodies style that’s suited for a secret agent and for the everyman, yet that’s just what the Billy Reid Bond Peacoat offers. Take the crisp navy color, as worn by naval servicemen decades ago. Heck, that color and this silhouette alone are enough to add class to any outfit.

Bond Peacoat

A slim, tailored peacoat that shot to prominence thanks to a certain secret agent.

Add in small, seriously premium touches — including a leather-reinforced collar and horn buttons — and you’re looking at much more than your average peacoat. It’s also made in Italy, putting the Billy Reid Bond Peacoat a cut above the rest. Side slash hand warmer pockets and front flap pockets make this coat one that’s not just for show; use them to stow your everyday carry essentials on chilly winter days. It’s crisply cut, making it the ideal complement to tailored wool trousers and rugged leather boots. It’s also a nice way to stay warm in transit to the office or your holiday party — if I were you, I’d wear it over a classic chambray shirt and slim tan chinos, paired up with durable desert boots (read more about all those men’s style essentials elsewhere on the site). Again, you’re going to have to invest in the Billy Reid Bond Peacoat, but I can nearly guarantee it’ll be the last peacoat you buy. OK, that’s it. That’s the end of this post. Get out there and pick it up while you still can!

Style Pick of the Week: Faherty Brand Bondi Jacket

Faherty Brand

Two seriously cool jackets for the price of one — all from a classic, dependable brand.

Take a good look at the Bondi Jacket from Faherty Brand — then envision yourself wearing it this winter. It’s not all that hard to do, right? After all, Faherty Brand consistently delivers the sort of casual, easygoing-yet-functional staples that every guy needs in his wardrobe, and they do it for nearly every season. Yes, even winter. That’s where the Bondi Jacket comes into play. It’s two jackets in one, with the type of design detailing that only the West Coast purveyors at Faherty Brand can provide — take one look at the cool reversible print, for starters.

It’s pretty plain to see that the Bondi Jacket is unlike any other winter style essential you’ve got in your wardrobe, and while I can’t advise that you wear this thing into the polar vortex, it’s certainly worthy keeping under consideration as another layer (to say the least). Brushed cotton blanket fabric makes up the printed interior, while a durable diamond-quilted chambray holds down the fort on the other side — again, two jackets that’ll layer with ease over everything from a classic white T-shirt to a rugged henley. The beauty of the Bondi Jacket? You can then layer it underneath a heavier winter parka for maximum protection on the streets — without sacrifing style once you head indoors. It’s that kind of versatility that Faherty Brand provides in spades — again, they’re not just a warm-weather brand.

Faherty Brand

A closer look at the reverse side of this durable shirt jacket.

And then, there’s the unique pattern on the Faherty Brand Bondi Jacket (as seen above). The Redwood Bluff design is both subtly stylish and just a bit bold, made to layer over a classic chambray shirt while offering a nice bit of contrast — think ’70s surfer cool without going too far over the top. This is a shirt jacket you should feel comfortable wearing with rugged chore pants and tough leather boots, too. Feel like going a little more low-key? The reverse-side chambray is a little more understated, to the point where you could team up the Faherty Brand Bondi Jacket with slim black jeans, a classic Oxford shirt and a warm beanie cap for winter’s nightcap at a (heated) outdoor rooftop. To be sure, that’s a specific style scenario … but hey, ’tis the season. If at first you’re wary of injecting that much color and pattern into your wardrobe, know that the tailored fit and easy-to-layer potential of the Faherty Brand Bondi Jacket make it a solid winner, especially for the price. That’s all you need this winter.

How would you layer the Faherty Brand Bondi Jacket? Are you on board with wearing a shirt jacket for winter?

Style Pick of the Week: Taylor Stitch Cashmere Elbow Patch Sweater

Wear this sweater any way you want — it’s that well-made.

Now that we’ve hit December — seriously, check your calendar! — you would do well to start adding some of the best men’s sweaters into your winter looks. In fact, a stylish winter sweater can serve as a centerpiece for all of your other men’s style essentials this season — in the right fit and fabric, the best men’s sweaters can be dressed up or down., worn with chinos or faded jeans in equal measure. Take the handsome Taylor Stitch Cashmere Elbow Patch Sweater, for instance. It’ll set you back a pretty penny, to be sure ($228 via Bespoke Post), but it’s an investment that pays dividends right away, from the refined profile to the rugged appeal of sheepskin leather elbow patches and the neutral Olive color. This is certainly the kind of sweater you can wear in more ways than one, and you should expect nothing less from the fine folks at Taylor Stitch. If it was possible to call a sweater “beautiful” — which it certainly is — mark my words, the Taylor Stitch Cashmere Elbow Patch Sweater would definitely qualify. Made from pure cashmere, hence the hefty price, this sweater should feel soft and cozy no matter if you throw it on over a classic white T-shirt or decide to pair it with a crisp white Oxford and a silver knit tie.

SHOP: The Taylor Stitch Cashmere Elbow Patch Sweater

This sweater checks all the boxes — casual, rugged, classic, versatile.

That’s another selling point of this sweater, particularly one cut in a classic crewneck style with old-school elbow patches — it works at the office (seriously, your co-workers might dig the elbow patches) and it works at home or on a winter weekend retreat. When you’re shelling out more than $200 for a sweater, it pays to have one you can wear often. That’s just part of the reasoning behind buying the Taylor Stitch Cashmere Elbow Patch Sweater. It’s also helpful that the TS team makes gear that everyone from your father to your grandfather to your brother can appreciate — these are pieces that don’t demand attention, yet still manage to stand out quietly. And since it’s the season of both holiday parties and holiday gifting, I’d urge you to consider splurging on the Taylor Stitch Cashmere Elbow Patch Sweater for yourself or someone else. We haven’t even covered the real Donegal flecks — that’s a unique a fabric as any out there. Are you convinced yet?

Style Pick of the Week: Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage

The toughest pair of jeans in your closet? Very nearly.

If there’s one thing I know to be true,it’s that you can always count on our Style Pick of the Week series to set you up with durable, classic gear fit for any occasion — at least, that’s the goal. And in a menswear universe where, it seems, trendiness is the enemy of good taste, it pays to find men’s style essentials that you love, and then wear the crap out of ’em. That’s particularly true if you can manage to find a stylish pair of men’s denim — and that’s where the Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage enter the equation. Now that we’ve truly hit the winter months for most of us, staying warm — and doing so with style and durability in mind — is a tall order. So, bear with me. Swapping out your slim faded denim for a hard-wearing pair of jeans like the Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage only pays dividends in the long run; trust me on that. Made from remarkably durable selvage duck canvas — a tightly woven plainweave fabric — the Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage Jeans are beastly and tough as heck. More like a pair of chore pants than your favorite pair of denim, yet with the same reliable fit and feel.

Naked & Famous Denim

Classic details like a nicely crafted leather patch help set these jeans apart.

And the fit is really what makes the Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage a wise purchase — we’re talking lean and tailored, yet with room to move. That means these jeans (made in Canada, by the way) are going to sit reliably atop everything from rugged leather lace-up boots to classic chukka boots without missing a beat. That tailored fit also means you can wear the Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage to the office with a navy cotton blazer and a blue chambray shirt — yet, these aren’t a pair of stretch denim that can’t withstand a little winter weather. I’m not saying you should wear the Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage out on a taxing day hike, but if you want to wear these classic jeans to the office, and then to happy hour? They’ll do just fine. They represent an easy way to switch up both your business casual and off-duty ensembles — I think they’d look best with a timeless crewneck sweater and moc toe boots for a weekend coffee date. But, it’s ultimately up to you.  Yessir, the Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage aren’t trendy in the slightest — and that’s a great thing.

Style Pick of the Week: Billy Reid Dempsey Jacket

A remarkable coat from a standout style purveyor in Billy Reid.

Do you ever pick a jacket out of a lineup and think to yourself … “Whoa. That jacket is AMAZING.” Such was the case for yours truly with the Billy Reid Dempsey Jacket, a truly stunning early winter coat that just might be one of the best men’s winter jackets — believe you me. It’s made with the kind of care and attention to detail that can only come from a designer who’s honed his chops getting all the small details right, from making the perfect American-made Oxford to developing a rugged pair of beautiful selvedge denim. Of course, the Bond Peacoat is a prime example of this approach, as is the new Billy Reid Dempsey Jacket, the kind of jacket you’re going to want to wear every single day of the week. True to form, it blends a rugged, old-school appeal with an edgy sort of style that wouldn’t look out of place at a cool speakeasy or a rock concert — seriously a piece like the Billy Reid Dempsey Jacket can very nearly do it all. Heck, the outer shell is water and wind-resistant, so it can take on highland hikes as readily as it can take on a gourmet dinner-and-drinks date.

Lined with faux fur and featuring a stand-up collar.

That’s relatively unique among weather-ready winter outerwear, but again, no one said the Billy Reid Dempsey Jacket  was trying to blend into the crowd. The stand-up collar adds a bit of an edge, similar to the classic Harrington jacket, while the rich Navy color is dressy and yet rugged all at once. To keep a long story short, the Billy Reid Dempsey Jacket is going to wear easily with beat-up moc toe leather boots, indigo denim and a thermal henley … and then you can turn right around and wear it in place of a blazer atop a classic Oxford shirt-knit tie combo at the office. For maximum adventure potential, the Billy Reid Dempsey Jacket even features water-resistant flap and button closures — make no mistake, this is a jacket for the modern man, done up in homage to classic field coat styles. What does that mean for you? It means it’s going to live up to the name, the billing and yes, the price tag (nearly $700). When you consider how far you can go when wearing the Billy Reid Dempsey Jacket though, I’ll think you’ll consider it a fine purchase. Who else is on board with that?

It’s the layering potential — wearable under a chambray shirt or a black moto jacket — and it’s the sense of casual cool you get from wearing a henley. That’s nearly all there is to it. Well, maybe not all there is to it.  The Flint and Tinder Slub Waffle Henley flips the script on the typical henley, with a slub thermal weave that easily lends itself to weekend layering — that’s just a start.

SHOP: The Flint and Tinder Slub Waffle Henley

Innovative details help make this a seasonal staple — agreed?

More specifically, the Flint and Tinder Slub Waffle Henley is just a nicely made henley, from the unbreakable UREA metal fisheye buttons to the poplin placket (made to provide some visual and textural interest). The end result is a unique henley that’s worth the price ($62) and able to be paired up with slightly more refined pieces. Seriously, try it underneath a tan herringbone blazer with dark denim for some classic high-low style at the office. And if you couldn’t tell by now, I personally love the Birch color — although you can also snag the Flint and Tinder Slub Waffle Henley in colors like Charcoal and Olive. The great news? No matter the color you select, the wearability of the Flint and Tinder Slub Waffle Henley is top-notch. Take your favorite flannel shirt, add this rugged henley, throw on some slim black denim and call it good. Conversely, roll out of bed during the work week, pair the Flint and Tinder Slub Waffle Henley with a nay flannel suit and brown leather lace-up boots — it just works.
