Contrasting details help set these Mott and Bow men’s jeans apart from the pack.

Hunting down the best jeans for men surely doesn’t have to be that difficult, and it helps that the Mott and Bow Hubert Jeans have plenty going for ’em. They’re a heavier fabric weight than other Mott and Bow jeans, clocking in at 14 oz. of cotton denim, plus small amounts of polyester and elastane for stretch. The medium wash (the brand says it’s meant to mimic four months of consistent wear) makes these sharp enough for the office — especially with a classic Oxford shirt, a cashmere cardigan and rugged leather boots — but you can also rock the Mott and Bow Hubert Jeans on the weekend with your favorite henley and high-top sneakers.

Again, there’s one place to go in this regard. When you want selvedge jeans that deliver quality, an agreeable price and infinite wearability, you might just want (no, you absolutely do want), the Slim Fit Japanese Stretch Selvedge Jean in Indigo Rinse from the good folks at Todd Snyder.

women's oxford shoe from Nisolo

The best men’s selvedge jeans get an upgrade here — while selvedge denim is normally unwashed and stiff (this is known as raw selvedge), Todd Snyder selvedge denim receives a handsome indigo rinse and uses unique stretch selvedge fabric from Japan. These aren’t your average pair of jeans, to say the least. They’re refined yet versatile, as at home with a Todd Snyder blazer as with one of the designer’s Champion T-shirts. The fit on these blue jeans is slim and modern, yet not rock star-skinny.

This means you can wear these slim dark blue jeans with the best chukka boots and a chambray shirt, or else with rugged men’s leather boots and a thermal henley all fall and into winter. Todd Snyder Japanese selvedge denim really is one-of-a-kind, so it’s a bit pricer ($198 via Todd Snyder), but no less worth it. In fact, when you find a  pair of selvedge jeans you can wear for months on end into winter — and well past that — I’d suggest you snap them up ASAP.

The Friday Read: The Best Gifts for Men, New Mott and Bow Denim & The Perfect T-Shirt

The right way to gear up for a cozy winter weekend — don’t you agree? Faherty Brand gets it.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — ’tis the season to bundle up in style, get your shopping taken care of, and then … kick back with one of the best Christmas beers, right? To help you get started with that first step, might I suggest picking up a Faherty Brand sweater for rugged style and cozy comfort? Something like the essential Faherty Brand Legend Sweater ought to do the trick, don’t you agree? After all, you can never go wrong with a stylish sweater that doubles as a rugged shirt — at least, that’s what I think. You’ll find today’s post is focused on plenty of the best gifts for men, from a well-crafted T-shirt to a new men’s grooming upgrade — there’s no time to waste if you still need to take care of some shopping. Holiday shopping will definitely be on my mind this weekend in NYC, but I’m excited to have some time off to properly take in the sights and sounds of the city.

On that note, I’m venturing into Manhattan on Saturday to fuel up with Birch Coffee, explore Central Park — potentially snapping some photos for my Instagram along the way — and then cap the day off in a big way. I’m heading to a rare evening on Broadway (well, in this case, Off-Broadway) to see a much-hyped production of “Cyrano,” starring Peter Dinklage and featuring music written by none other than members of my favorite band, The National! Lead singer Matt Berninger and his wife, Carin Besser, wrote lyrics for this updated production of “Cyrano,” while brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner (the multi-instrument virtuosos of the band) wrote music. Talk about an incredible combination — and surely, an incredible production! I really can’t wait. What’s on your weekend to-do list? First things first, check out today’s Friday Read.

  • Let’s get down to holiday gifting, shall we? I mentioned above that we’d dive into a great deal on men’s jeans, and that’s in fact the case here with Mott and Bow. The NYC brand is still going strong when it comes to making some of the best men’s jeans, and this season, they’ve got quite the deal on tap:  Get a free tee with any order of denimusing the code HOLIDAY19!
  • now through the end of the month. Want more deals on the best men’s jeans and accessories from this excellent brand? It gets better. Use the code (again, HOLIDAY19!) to get a free scarf or hat with orders over $200. The search for the best pair of men’s denim just got a whole lot easier.
  • Alright, so I’m going to point you toward a major grooming upgrade (and a major grooming gift) for the guy in your life this season. Helpfully, Cardon for Men is launching a limited-edition gift set with a special early preview of two products set to launch in January (those two new products would be the Clay Purifying Cleaners and 3-in-1 Hydro Boost Gel Moisturizer). So, that’s a special gift set that also offers an early look at two new potential grooming favorites — what’s not to love about that??
  •  Perhaps you want to pick up a gift for the traveler in your life? Look no further than the richly crafted, well-appointed Tecovas Large Duffle, from the same brand that’s built quite the heritage of making ultra-functional (and stylish) cowboy boots.
  • Speaking of essential gifts, what about the perfect T-shirt? It’s possible now, thanks to General Issue (the work of award-winning designer Susan Woo). This new brand works with factories and like-minded partners in Brooklyn to craft luxurious-yet-accesible basics, resulting in a well-curated line with three items to start. A super-soft short-sleeve tee, a sharp polo, and a casual long-sleeve shawl tee are up for grabs — whoever gets one of these is going to love it, guarnateed.

Alright, that’s going to end my latest rundown of crucial men’s gifts to buy now — there’s plenty more where that came from in the weeks ahead. In the meantime, perhaps you’re interested in reading about even more of the best new menswear releases? From a rugged waxed trucker jacket to the best new leather boots, I guarantee you my latest gear roundup will have something for you (or the stylish fella on your shopping list). Cheers to the season!

The Friday Read: Denver, The National & The Best Denim to Buy Now

The perfect layer to get ready for a September weekend.

Alright, folks — we’re going to get into the Huckberry x Howler Brothers collaboration as seen above later on in this article, but it’s the spirit of that type of gear that’s important here. It’s the first weekend after Labor Day, and maybe you’re back in the office, dreaming of your next getaway — the Huckberry x Howler Brothers North Coast Collection can help you do that. But more on that collection of the best new men’s gear in a second. Let’s go back to the spirit of adventure: That applies particularly for me this weekend, as I’m hitting the road to Denver (a new locale for me!) to once again take in a lifechanging show by my favorite band, The National. This group of indie rock heroes have given me more than a few highlights of my entire year (and my life!) these past few months.

That includes the release of their incredible new album and short film, “I Am Easy To Find,” back in May, but it really kicked off all the way back in April in New York City with a special, pre-album release show at Beacon Theater. This wonderful night of soulful, expansive indie rock was actually just captured via the new documentary, “The National: I Am Easy to Find, Live from New York’s Beacon Theatre” — I simply can’t stop listening or watching. From there, well, the hits have kept coming — I’ve had the chance to live out my dreams, heading everywhere from Los Angeles to Madrid and all the way back to Brooklyn to see this iconic band (all the while dressed in style, of course!). I feel very lucky, to say the least! And I positively can’t wait for two shows at the new Mission Ballroom!

I’ve heard stellar things about Denver across the years as well, from the city’s excellent craft beer scene to its easily accessible outdoor culture and atmosphere, and I really can’t wait to explore the city. Planned stops include spots like Crema Coffeehouse and Ratio Beerworks, naturally, along with the humble (but tasty-looking!) confines of Butcher Block Cafe. I’ll be bringing along favorites like my Flint and Tinder Light Wash Jeans and of course, a new Taylor Stitch Jack Shirt — you can check out all the music & craft beer fun on my Instagram, naturally. So, that’s what’s on tap for me this weekend — how about you? Start things off the right way with another edition of The Friday Read. Cheers!

  • It’s hard to top affordable men’s denim, right? Especially when that denim happens to be from Jomers — the best men’s denim on the market comes courtesy of the brand’s work with White Oak Cone Mills, former purveyors of truly excellent indigo cotton fabric made into some seriously excellent jeans. And on the Jomers front, you can check out my coverage at The Manual here.
  • Speaking of early fall and rugged outdoor adventure, it was a true treat to cover the Huckberry x Howler Brothers North Coast Collection over at GearMoose — it’s some of the most outdoor-ready gear you can get your hands on, and it all comes courtesy of a lauded online retailer and the stellar Howler Brothers brand. Now, let’s get out there.
  • It’s crucial that you start prepping for fall as early as possible — and seeing as it’s September, that time is now … right now. If you didn’t catch it last month, I’m going to point you toward my roundup of the best new men’s gear for the season. Happy shopping!

I’m going to serve up one last item for the weekend before I take off (literally, in this case!). There are still plenty of breezy nights to be had out there, and in that case, you’re going to need this rugged Faherty Brand poncho for the occasion. It’s one of the best men’s jackets for that last camping trip or a breezy day near the water. That’s all I’ve got today, folks! Enjoy the weekend.

Style Pick of the Week: Mott & Bow Crosby Denim

A go-to pair of classic dark blue denim for any day of the week.

If you peruse the pages of The Style Guide with any frequency, there are classic men’s style brands (or newly classic men’s style brands!) that come up from time to time. Across the years, Mott & Bow has been one of those brands, a reliable producer of the best denim for men — including the utterly timeless Mott and Bow Crosby Denim as seen above. What makes them so special? That’s why we’re here, folks. (On that note, head to this link to read my Mott and Bow product review). From the brand’s classic denim shirts to its mobile, versatile classic dark blue denim, this quickly growing E-commerce brand (based in NYC) makes it surprisingly easy for guys to find a great-fitting pair of jeans, seeing as they offer fits ranging from Straight to Skinny. The Mott and Bow Crosby Denim are of the slim variety, and that should sit just right for most of us guys. And lest this all start to sound too complex or too pricey — they’re just jeans, after all — know that Mott and Bow offers a free try-on size option. And when you consider the agreeable pricing (the Mott and Bow Crosby Denim start at just $108), you’re getting a pair of the best men’s blue jeans for a downright steal.

SHOP: The Mott and Bow Crosby Denim

A fit that’s slim but not too slim, ideal for any season.

And whether or not you’ve tried a pair from them before, you should know that Mott and Bow denim doesn’t pull any punches in terms of style points or quality, either. Case in point: These stylish blue jeans are made from an agreeable 12.2oz. cotton denim & feature 2 percent elastane. In short, that means these are classic blue jeans through and through, neither too heavy (a la selvedge) or too lightweight and stretch (a la cheap jeans from a fast fashion retailer). Yes indeed, these are some of the best men’s jeans on the market — and the use of a pleasing 6-month wash. For the unitiated, that involves using a resin spray, hand scraping & drying across multiple steps — resulting in the classic Mott and Bow look and finish you see today. Because the Mott and Bow Crosby Denim are such a timeless pair of denim, that means you can wear them with everything from a charcoal Oxford shirt and classic suede chukka boots to a crisp white tee and your favorite pair of leather sneakers. And when fall rolls around, throw on a rugged chambray shirt, a classic shawl cardigan and your favorite pair of leather boots to head out for a pint (or heck, a day at the office). There’s really no wrong way to go about wearing the Mott and Bow Crosby Denim, I can guarantee that.

Style Pick of the Week: Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage

The toughest pair of jeans in your closet? Very nearly.

If there’s one thing I know to be true,it’s that you can always count on our Style Pick of the Week series to set you up with durable, classic gear fit for any occasion — at least, that’s the goal. And in a menswear universe where, it seems, trendiness is the enemy of good taste, it pays to find men’s style essentials that you love, and then wear the crap out of ’em. That’s particularly true if you can manage to find a stylish pair of men’s denim — and that’s where the Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage enter the equation. Now that we’ve truly hit the winter months for most of us, staying warm — and doing so with style and durability in mind — is a tall order. So, bear with me. Swapping out your slim faded denim for a hard-wearing pair of jeans like the Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage only pays dividends in the long run; trust me on that. Made from remarkably durable selvage duck canvas — a tightly woven plainweave fabric — the Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage Jeans are beastly and tough as heck. More like a pair of chore pants than your favorite pair of denim, yet with the same reliable fit and feel.

Naked & Famous Denim

Classic details like a nicely crafted leather patch help set these jeans apart.

And the fit is really what makes the Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage a wise purchase — we’re talking lean and tailored, yet with room to move. That means these jeans (made in Canada, by the way) are going to sit reliably atop everything from rugged leather lace-up boots to classic chukka boots without missing a beat. That tailored fit also means you can wear the Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage to the office with a navy cotton blazer and a blue chambray shirt — yet, these aren’t a pair of stretch denim that can’t withstand a little winter weather. I’m not saying you should wear the Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage out on a taxing day hike, but if you want to wear these classic jeans to the office, and then to happy hour? They’ll do just fine. They represent an easy way to switch up both your business casual and off-duty ensembles — I think they’d look best with a timeless crewneck sweater and moc toe boots for a weekend coffee date. But, it’s ultimately up to you.  Yessir, the Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage aren’t trendy in the slightest — and that’s a great thing.

Style Pick of the Week: Flint and Tinder Stonewashed Jeans

Flint and Tinder

Possibly a new daily style staple.

Don’t get it twisted: There’s a good chance the Flint and Tinder Stonewashed Jeans could become your new favorite pair of denim this fall — and certainly, well beyond that. Here we are on the first day of September, and that means it’s probably time to take a good, long look at the fall style essentials you have, and the ones you need. That is to say, a great pair of everyday denim from go-to Style Guide favorites Flint and Tinder belongs on the list. The in-house brand of our good friends at Huckberry continues to deliver on classic style essentials made (in the States!) with durability and rugged style in mind. That runs all the way from shirting to underwear to the Stonewashed Jeans you see here. I’m a big fan of the similarly constructed Flint and Tinder All-American Jeans, and the Stonewashed Jeans apply that same ethos to a fall-friendly wash. As much as I love a good pair of inky denim, it’s pleasing and fun to see a more casual-leaning pair of classic men’s jeans make their way into your rotation.

SHOP: The Flint and Tinder Stonewashed Jeans via Huckberry

Turn up the cuffs and show off the details.

You can wear ’em exactly like you’d wear your favorite pair of rich blue denim, but in a more laidback fashion (think a thermal henley, a heather grey cardigan and casual brown leather boots, to start). The Flint and Tinder Stonewashed Jeans have all the styling potential you could want this fall, and they’ll pair up just fine with every shirt in your arsenal, from flannel shirting to a classic chambray shirt or a casual long-sleeve shirt. After all, they’re just jeans, right? Not quite. What makes the Flint and Tinder Stonewashed Jeans so different? It’s easy. We’re talking a blend of cotton and stretch for crucial comfort. The slim fit (although they’re also available in Straight fit) is tapered and lean but not too tight, making them an easy match with suede Chelsea boots or leather lace-up boots … or perhaps a pair of stylish leather brogues. And although it might not seem like it, it’s surprisingly easy to incorporate the Flint and Tinder Stonewashed Jeans into work week looks — they’ll even complement a navy cotton blazer and a blue Oxford shirt at the office. The key is the unique stone wash, which gives these stylish jeans some character. So, to recap: An agreeable fit, made-in-America construction and a casual finish that’s also surprisingly easy to wear? Yessir, the Flint and Tinder Stonewashed Jeans are a big-time fall winner.
