SYMBOL Audio Unison 52″ Record Stand — $3,695

Simply a beautiful way to store your new favorite records — worth every penny.

Sporty, sleek, stylish spring sneakers.

Portuguese Flannel Pop Brick Shirt — $61.98

Style Pick of the Week: Levi’s Made & Crafted Type II Trucker Jacket

A newly iconic silhouette from an iconic brand.

Does it get much better when it comes to classic spring style than an equally classic denim jacket from Levi’s? Not really, folks. The rugged, timeless denim jacket is a surefire way to take your spring style from good to great, especially when that jacket happens to be the Levi’s Made & Crafted Type II Trucker Jacket — in short, it’s the one piece of spring outerwear you need now. And what can it do that other jackets can’t? Plenty. It’s got a unique silhouette designed with the open road in mind — Levi’s pioneered the trucker jacket, with its multitude of pockets, for West Coast explorers and Gold Rush diggers, and that same heritage and history can be found in the Levi’s Made & Crafted Type II Trucker Jacket today. In fact, it’s all the more helpful that the Made & Crafted line itself plays off that heritage in a way that’s even more authentic than the regular Levi’s main line. Designs happen to be based on archival styles from the brand, so it’s no surprise that they’ve crushed it with the Levi’s Made & Crafted Type II Trucker Jacket.

So, what makes the timeless denim jacket a worthwhile addition to your spring outerwear rotation, particularly when you might be more inclined to reach for a weather-ready waxed canvas jacket or a water-resistant parka? Well, those styles are all well and good … but none of them can match the rugged versatility of the Levi’s Made & Crafted Type II Trucker Jacket, and that’s just … the way it is.

Levi's Made & Crafted

Authentic detailing lifts this jacket a cut above the rest.

The Levi’s Made & Crafted Type II Trucker Jacket also features the sort of stylish details and easygoing appeal you’d expect from a spring denim jacket, including the use of 100 percent cotton. That makes it an easy choice to wear with laidback spring essentials, from a crisp white tee and tan chinos to suede chukka boots, black denim and a white Oxford shirt (a suitably edgy mix of high-low style).

The Levi’s Made & Crafted Type II Trucker Jacket also features the perfect amount of room for your everyday carry essentials, what with front hip patch pockets. Again, this underrated denim jacket is unique, eye-catching and absolutely ready for whatever you throw at it, from patio happy hours to farmer’s market visits to a weekend brewery tour (and then some). It’s assuredly what you would expect when on the hunt for a classic denim jacket from Levi’s — what are you waiting for?

The Levi’s Made & Crafted Standard Shirt comes in a wide range of standout colors and patterns.

Helpfully, the¬†¬†Levi’s Standard Shirt¬†is also far from your average, overly burly or baggy winter flannel shirt. The Standard Shirt is made from 100 percent cotton twill in a tailored fit, perfect for throwing on over a stylish graphic tee or a rugged winter henley in equal measure.¬† With a buttondown point collar and a left chest pocket, it’s got all the little details you’d expect to find in an easygoing casual shirt — again, it’s the type of classic men’s shirt you can wear under a tan herringbone blazer or with a classic shawl cardigan without missing a beat. It’s an unexpected style move from a timeless brand that’s best known for its denim, but I say … go for it. Perhaps the best news of all? The¬†Standard Shirt¬†is going to be a perfect complement when worn with slim Levi’s denim, especially the Levi’s 511 jeans (a personal favorite). Add a warm winter bomber jacket, throw on some beat-up black boots, and head to your favorite brewpub on a chilly weekend night. See Now, Buy Now: Levi’s 501 Jeans Are The Classic Jeans You Need Now

You can’t argue with these classic jeans, especially in a timeless, versatile dark wash.

There are menswear staples that are instantly recognizable and easily wearable — take it from a brand that modernized the blue jean as we know it today, Levi’s. And the pair of jeans that remain a cultural icon after decades? That’d be the Levi’s 501,¬†a perfect pair of classic men’s denim that you can buy right now, and then wear for … heck, forever. In any season, in any weather … these are THE jeans (arguably). That is to say, in the way of men’s style essentials that can work in August, September or any other month of the year, there really aren’t many — the chambray shirt and suede chukka boots come to mind, as does a pair of stylish men’s denim like the Levi’s 501, naturally.

It can certainly be tricky to get all the details right, but that’s what the¬†Levi’s 501¬†have continually brought to the table. Among those details? The iconic button fly, a timeless fit and the Dark Stonewash finish that you’ll grow to love. Looking for some well-fitting men’s denim that can rack up some miles? Bingo.

Just one of the many details that make the Levi’s 501 worth buying.

On that note, let’s talk about the fit and versatility of the¬†Levi’s 501, shall we? Unlike some pairs of stretch denim that tend to fit more like denim leggings (yikes!), the 501 from Levi’s¬†are cut in a straight fit, with a regular leg opening. That means the¬†Levi’s 501¬†are at their best when worn with equally classic footwear — think durable high-top Converse sneakers or rugged Red Wing Heritage leather boots. That timeless design also makes ’em an easy pair of denim to wear in different seasons. The¬†Levi’s 501 are as at home with a heather grey pocket tee and those aforementioned high-tops as they are with a grey crewneck sweater and yes,¬†Red Wing Heritage leather boots¬†come fall and winter. Did we mention the part about the classic fit? The rich Dark Stonewash finish? And the excellent price (just $59.50 via the Levi’s site)? Ahh, OK. Got it. Happy shopping!

Planning on buying the Levi’s 501? How are you planning on styling ’em?¬† Join us over at The Style Guide Facebook page to talk shop.¬†

#OOTD: Here’s the Best Way to Wear a Denim Jacket This Summer

In the hustle and bustle between holding down a PR job and keeping things (mostly) afloat at The Style Guide, there are days where I prefer to just grab and go when it comes to my personal style. Do you feel much the same way? Well, good sir (or madam!), today’s #OOTD is for you. We’re talking the best way to wear a denim jacket this summer — a classic denim jacket is a grab-and-go style move that I find myself making more often than not, especially in these somewhat breezy days of early summer, where a sunny afternoon can shift to a cloudy night quite quickly. The Levi’s Trucker Jacket shown below is a timeless style staple, a silhouette that looks good on any guy. It looks even better when paired with some crisp-yet-simple brown dress shoes and pieces like a tough leather belt. What’s more, a rugged denim jacket adds a bit of visual edge to even simple looks — take, for instance, the slim grey T-shirt and classic five-pocket pants featured below. That, to me, is grab-and-go style at its best. The type of style that looks polished and considered, but not too perfect. The type of style that’s perfect for, well, right now. Count this #OOTD¬†as perfect for weekend happy hour or a patio party, or even a day on the road — you’d be surprised how handy a Levi’s Trucker Jacket can be (can you tell I’m a fan?). If you’ve got thoughts of your own on this #menswear ensemble, let me know on Twitter. Onward!

A classic denim jacket punches up this timeless #OOTD even more. Don’t you agree?

  • The Denim Jacket:¬†Levi’s Trucker Jacket in Queen, $89.50 — The casual light wash and lightweight cotton construction make the Levi’s Trucker Jacket¬†an easy summer layering move, particularly over a classic grey tee.
  • The T-Shirt:¬†Taylor Stitch Triblend Tee in Grey, $38 — We’ve sung the praises of the Taylor Stitch Triblend Tee on the blog before. To be sure, the Triblend Tee in Grey is simple, comfortable and exceedingly well-made — it’s more than good enough to stand on its own.
  • The Pants:¬†Flint and Tinder 365 Pants in Earth, $98 — The cut of jeans with the fabrication of chinos — the Flint and Tinder 365 Pants are an everyday staple that exude timeless, cool style — perfect for summer.
  • The Shoes: Thursday Boots Statesman Dress Shoes in Brown, $180 — The shoes really do make this outfit — understated dress shoes add a unique bit of high-low style here; they’re a cut above laidback high-top sneakers, so wear this look to get patio drinks at your favorite cocktail bar.
  • The Socks:¬†Arvin Goods Camp Socks, $15 — No stuffy wool boot socks here — just well-made, breathable Arvin Goods socks with some nice texture and color.
  • The Belt:¬†Levi’s Linden Roller Belt, $35 — A textured leather belt is going to keep this outfit firmly in casual territory– it’s a nice contrast to the crisp dress shoes and the stylish watch (you’ll see it in just a minute!)
  • The Watch: Shinola Runwell Watch, $550 — The beauty of a denim jacket-and-tee combo, matched up with simple-yet-sharp dress shoes? Your watch can toe that same line — the Shinola Runwell Watch is investment-worthy and sharp, yet it’s still a classic leather watch that’s understated enough to fit right in.
  • The Sunglasses:¬†Raen Optics Wiley Sunglasses, $135 — Because the rest of this outfit is stylish, yet not over-the-top, your sunglasses can be used to inject just a bit of visual interest into the look. Turn to Raen Optics.

We’re turning the page on today’s #OOTD. Have you come around to the idea of wearing a¬†classic denim jacket¬†a little more casually this summer? When accessorized with the right staple pieces — like the simple-yet-effective¬†Triblend Tee in Grey¬†and the nicely tailored¬†Flint and Tinder 365 Pants¬†— it offers a bit of standout style without going overboard. It’s timeless, it’s rugged, it works for breezy summer nights and cool days … the¬†Levi’s Trucker Jacket¬†sure is a winner. That’s grab-and-go style personified. Crisp dress shoes are an interesting and unique substitution for classic sneakers — give it a try sometime and see where it takes you. Just because we’re going casual doesn’t give you an excuse to cut corners on the accessories front — start with a rugged leather belt from Levi’s, then add the¬†Shinola Runwell Watch¬†to seal the deal. Arvin Goods socks bring some sustainability and style into the equation — just the right amount of visual contrast when peeking out from underneath the cuff of your¬†Flint and Tinder 365 Pants, ehh? On the eyewear front,¬†Raen Optics¬†has you covered in matters of both looks and functionality. Remember, the building blocks of any grab-and-go look are often pieces right in front of you — a cool denim jacket, an easygoing tee, some¬†classic five-pocket pants. From there? Go anywhere you please this summer. Oh, and grab me a pint, will ya? Cheers!

Style Pick of the Week: Levi’s 505C Men’s Denim

Take a light wash denm jacket and team it up with sturdy leather boots and Levi’s 505C Denim for rock-ready style.

Perhaps it’s the amount of concerts I’m lucky enough to attend weekly in NYC, or perhaps it’s the fact that I’ve been listening non-stop to modern-yet-classic rock bands like Interpol and The Strokes, but I find myself reaching a lot for my Levi’s 505C Denim¬†— fittingly enough, today’s featured #menswear pick on The Style Guide.¬† The even better part?¬† If you’ve been looking for a pair of denim you can wear to a rock concert for a while now, I think the 505C from Levi’s might just be the ticket, what with its roots in classic rock heritage (the original silhouette was once worn by the likes of the Ramones). Crucially, they simultaneously harness downtown cool and modern style.¬† And since it’s the weekend, let’s crack open a cold one, kick back and find out why¬†Levi’s¬†has struck gold with the 505C¬†— shall we? Before we dive in, know that you can get free shipping from Levi’s on orders of $100 or more. Now, where were we?Ahh, right — the excellent style of the Levi’s 505C. I’ve certainly put my Levi’s 505C Jeans to the test since initially reviewing them last year for The Manual. From exploring Brooklyn to heading to Grand Rapids and rocking out at¬†Lollapalooza 2017, I’ve been more than pleased with how these classic, rock-inspired jeans have held up. Heck, I’m even wearing them this weekend as I explore Brooklyn and see my favorite band, The National. What’s the real kicker, though? You can get all that quality and classic Levi’s style in spades for under $40 on sale — sizes of the Levi’s 505C Jeans are going fast though, so you best act now. And what exactly are you getting for your hard-earned cash?

classic Levi's jeans

Suitable for a brewery, a concert or somewhere in between — that’s the Levi’s 505C for you. Wear it with a plaid shirt and a wool beanie cap for fall-friendly style.

For one, you’re getting the long heritage, history and attention to detail that¬†Levi’s¬† packs into everything from its classic men’s denim to its accessories. The 505C is no exception, featuring a blend of domestic and imported materials — including Mount Vernon cotton denim. These stylish, classic men’s jeans are also made with one percent stretch — critical for getting around town, getting to the office and getting to that concert later. I even brought them with me on a spring trip to Pittsburgh to see Local Natives, and loved the versatility, quality and excellent fit. That’s simply what you get with Levi’s denim.¬† And lest you think these jeans will only work at a concert or as you dress for a music festival, they’ve got plenty going for them when it comes to reliable styling potential. The Levi’s 505C, particularly in the medium-grey Marky fit as seen here, works with¬† a navy cotton blazer and a classic Oxford shirt, (plus stylish leather boots), for casual office style that retains a bit of rugged edge. And when the weekend rolls around and the doors open at your favorite concert venue? Team classic Levi’s denim with a slim striped henley and a moto jacket — plus your favorite pair of leather boots — for undeniably cool and rugged style. Who’s ready to rock?

Will this pair of Levi’s men’s jeans be making its way into your wardrobe? Also! What concerts do you have coming up in the near future!? Let me know on Twitter.

Hitting the Beach: A Memorial Day Weekend in Florida

Equal parts preppy, classic and laidback. Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt by Criquet Shirts. Surf n’ Turf Hybrid Shorts by Volcom. Leadbelly Sunglasses by Electric. Bransen Dive Watch by CHAPS. Shot on an iPhone 7 Plus.

As the week dawned rainy and a bit chilly in NYC,¬† my mind turned immediately toward sunny Florida –I knew I needed a¬†vacation. And that’s just what I got, as¬†I spent these past few days celebrating Memorial Day weekend in style. I always relish the chance to hop a¬†quick flight south to my parents’ adopted home of Fort Myers, that much is true.¬†¬†Close to pristine beaches and blue water, near to a great craft beer brewery or two, and surrounded by great times, close friends and family and a hearty¬†helping of gourmet home cooking¬†— it’s always a treat! Of course, if you follow me on Instagram, you’re familiar with my visits. And if not? Settle in for¬†a few tips on men’s travel¬†style¬†from my trip.¬†I last trekked down to Florida with my favorite #menswear during a¬†Style Guide spring break¬†visit this past March, and that came not long after I celebrated Christmas in style in Fort Myers. That being said, it never gets old ditching rugged spring outerwear for a bit of much-needed sun! And as always, this trip put my packing mettle to the test.

From NYC to Fort Myers, menswear in tow. Trucker Jacket by Levi’s. Striped Pocket Tee and Cropped Stretch Cotton Chinos by JACHS NY. SYD Leather Watch by Nautica. Havana Sunglasses by Component. Nylite Sneakers by Abercrombie & Fitch x Tretorn. Brass bottle opener and Flight Brief by Owen and Fred. Fillmore Headphones by LSTN Sound Co. Explorer’s Cap by Huckberry.

My last major trip took me to Pittsburgh to see Local Natives — needless to say, conditions were a little bit different (in a great way!), as I hopped a quick flight to Fort Myers. To take on a breezy NYC day and travel thereafter, my Levi’s Trucker Jacket in a seasonally friendly light wash was an easy-to-wear outer layer — and it was just as easy to cram into my trusty Owen and Fred Voyager Waxed Weekender when getting off the plane in Fort Myers. Thanks to my¬†casual office dress code,¬†I was able to sneak in two great pieces from my pals at JACHS NY — the breathable, comfortable Striped Pocket Tee and sharp Red Cropped Stretch Cotton Chinos, featuring a single pleat¬†for modern style.¬†Be on the lookout for similarly easygoing pieces for your next jaunt to a warm-weather locale — and perhaps bring along your own pair of the Abercrombie & Fitch x Tretorn Nylite Sneakers, as I did. When teamed up with my rugged-yet-crisp Nautica SYD Leather Date Watch and my reliable Huckberry Explorer’s Cap, the combo worked for the plane ride … and then grabbing a Corona shortly after arrival.

Beach essentials for a sunny Florida day. T-shirt by Flint and Tinder. 311 Boardshorts by Birdwell Beach Britches for Todd Snyder. Calypso Watch by MVMT Watches. Legend Sneakers by SeaVees. Sunglasses by Component. Pomade by Fatboy Hair.

As it so turns out, Friday was a bright, beautiful and sunny day in Florida — the absolute perfect day to hit the beach and kick off a mini-vacation.¬†No matter where your travels take you, you should start the day with men’s grooming essentials — as it were,¬†I styled my ‘do for the day with the clean and sharp¬†Sea Salt Pomade from Brooklyn’s own Fatboy Hair. And on the apparel front: Simple style always starts with the basics — like a stylish Flint and Tinder T-shirt, made in America with marled fabric. It was¬†a classic complement to my new favorite pair of swim trunks, the beach-ready 311 Boardshorts from the excellent Birdwell Beach Britches for Todd Snyder collaboration.

Oxfords under $50 CAD_120x90

Stylish beach gear (Corona not included) from the Birdwell Beach Britches for Todd Snyder collaboration and my new Component sunglasses. Shot on an iPhone 7 Plus.

And it wouldn’t be a day of exploration without my Legend Sneakers from the fine folks at SeaVees — effortless style finely accented by the durable,¬†handsome and functional¬†MVMT Watches Calypso Watch.¬† And for kicking back on the beach, I needed a few more items. Step one: Enter the stylish headphones via the¬†Vibes Box¬†from Bespoke Post. Step two: Enter my¬†wearable and sharp¬†Component sunglasses¬†. The next time you head to the beach, don’t leave behind your stylish beach gear. And with a day of beach-going and pool relaxation in the books, it was time for a classic Hayhoe family cookout. I’d tell you all about my dad’s ribs, but that recipe is a secret!

Functional picks that mix the preppy — my Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt — with the¬†utilitarian (my Volcom Surf n’ Turf Hybrid Shorts). Reazer Drive Loafers by Clarks. Leadbelly Sunglasses by Electric. Bransen Diver by CHAPS.

Of course, no trip to Florida would be complete without a Saturday¬†trip to Fort Myers Beach — teamed with seasonal style that fit right in, of coruse. In this instance, that meant my new Volcom Surf n’ Turf Hybrid Shorts were a comfortable, transitional style move — able to move seamlessly from water to land thanks to quick-drying technology. The tailored fit also nicely complemented my slim, tailored and classic Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt in a crisp shade of white. You might recognize the Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt¬†from a recent Style Pick of the Week entry — I can vouch that it performed admirably in the heat as I soaked up the sun and sipped a few¬†Coronas.
Sutro Shoes Inc.
And the next time you want to inject a bit of continental style into a polo-and-shorts combo, take the Clarks Reazor Drive Loafer in a bright shade of Blue Nubuck — mine proved quite comfortable and very easy to slip on and off. And when matched up with stylish accessories (specifically, the Electric Leadbelly Sunglasses and the well-priced CHAPS Bransen Diver, courtesy of the brand), I was more than set for a full day of exploration in the Florida sun. A dive watch and versatile shades will work anywhere you travel this summer — especially Florida.

Greats

Gear that doesn’t compromise style in the heat. Wenlock Chambray Shirt by United by Blue. Linen trousers by Bridge and Burn. Penny loafers by Sebago. SYD Leather Watch by Nautica. Brass bottle opener by Owen and Fred. Sunglasses by Component. Pencil by Delfonics.

It should come as no surprise that a day of rest and relaxation — along with another backyard BBQ — was in order on Sunday following two busy days in the sun. I still took on the heat in style though, starting with my slim-fitting and uniquely designed United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt. You might recognize this United By Blue summer essential from my Style Pick of the Week series — with a tailored fit, soft fabric and a cool pattern, the¬†Wenlock Chambray Shirt¬†proved¬†a Florida winner.¬†Particularly when matched up with my cotton-linen blend Bridge and Burn Roark Olive Trousers, I stayed quite cool in the sun. Getting around was also made easier thanks once again to my Component sunglasses, mixing vintage inspiration and a modern edge. I was pleased once again with the tough functionality of my Nautica SYD Leather Date Watch, and I injected a bit of dressy detailing¬†into the ensemble with the Sebago Legacy Penny Loafers in a head-turning shade of red leather. Look for similar day-to-night, transitional pieces the next time you’re searching¬†for a¬†full-day, warm-weather outfit.

Plenty of #menswear to pack into my Owen and Fred Voyager Waxed Weekender, from my Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt to my Ministry of Supply Going Places Shorts. Waterbury Chronograph by Timex. Sneakers by Gola. Leadbelly Sunglasses by Electric. Steno Book by Field Notes Brand.

Monday so far promises¬†a full day of Florida relaxation — and a crucial day off work — before heading back to NYC. I¬†brought more on-point¬†gear¬†to fight off the heat,¬†starting with¬†another Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt — the organic cotton¬† of the Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt¬†is breathable and comfortable.¬†My Ministry of Supply Going Places Shorts also do¬†a fine job at wicking sweat in a tailored silhouette. And my Gola Classics Comet Plimsoll Trainers add a dash¬†of sporty style to this classic look. Of course, my durable and rugged Timex Waterbury Chronograph (in a cool matte black)¬†has so far paired¬†up nicely with my Electric Leadbelly Sunglasses for one last day in the Florida sun.

Looking back on this weekend, it absolutely brought with it everything I had hoped for — relaxing beach time, some much-needed sand and sun (as always), and plenty of meaningful time with family. In the hustle and bustle of New York City (and in the hustle and bustle of planning for these trips!), life can sometimes fly by very quickly, and yet … this weekend was simply the ideal way to kick off summer. I hope you experienced much of the same on your end¬†this weekend. Know that there’s plenty more travel and plenty more menswear to come on The Style Guide, including a look tomorrow at what to wear to a music festival.

Thanks, as always, for reading!
