You best believe I’ll be packing summer style essentials from brands like Taylor Stitch on the trip, and I’ll also be looking forward to sipping on some fresh craft beer and of course, chowing down on a few hearty burgers right off the grill. What’s on your agenda for these strange and trying times? I can only hope it involves rest, relaxation, and of course … the Friday Read we’ve got outlined below. In search of new artwork for your home or a new, cool beer glass? Those tidbits can be found below (keep scrolling!). It also seems like as good a time as any to kick back with some relaxing summer jams — I put together this WFH playlist earlier this year, but now would be the right time to enjoy some laidback listening around the bonfire, right? Yes, indeed (think Yo La Tengo, Alvvays & Big Thief, to name a few!). Keep on scrolling for more from the world of menswear and beyond, and I’m wishing everyone a very happy Fourth of July weekend. Stay safe out there, folks!
We just talked about the best glass for your beer, so … wondering what to sip on this weekend? In my mind, that’s easy — you’re going to want the aptly named Anchor Liberty Ale, an iconic craft beer that’s meant to be enjoyed during a hot day on the boat or a cool evening around a bonfire. Heck, if you’re in the San Francisco area, use the handy Anchor Beer To Go feature for curbside pick-up — those outside the Bay Area should head toward the Anchor Beer Finderto find this legendary beer elsewhere. Brewed 45 years ago to honor the 200th anniversary of Paul Revere’s famed midnight ride, this is a classic craft beer worth enjoying again and again.
That’s just about going to wrap it up for me today, folks. But wait … I’m going to leave you with one last Fourth of July style suggestion. You need to have some cool boat shoes on your feet this weekend, and better yet, you need to know how to wear boat shoes in the best way possible for the rest of summer. That’s where this #OOTD comes into play — in fact, the Todd Snyder x Sebago boat shoes featured in that piece are some of the most unique ones I’ve seen in recent memory. I hope you feel the same, and I hope you enjoy time with family & friends this weekend. Thanks for reading — next round’s on me!
Rest assured, it’s still a very difficult and challenging time out there, so thank you for stopping by the blog. Here we are on yet another Friday — first off, have you picked up your new favorite T-shirt (as seen above), or a last-minute Father’s Day gift? If not, it’s time to get on that — and there’s no better place to go than Huckberry, which recently launched the Forty Five Tee. You’ve read about these stylish T-shirts on the blog, but if you’re just getting up to speed, know that Huckberry focused on crafting the best men’s T-shirt … and only that. It’s similar to how the 45RPM record featured just one perfect single (and changed how people collected vinyl records forever). In addition to those tees, we’ll also have plenty of cool ways to kick off the rest of your weekend in today’s Friday Read. Although all of our plans look a bit different this year for Father’s Day, I’d urge you to celebrate with the fathers and father figures in your life however best you can — and maybe stop by the Huckberry Father’s Day Shop or the Todd Snyder Father’s Day Shop to get a last-second gift??
As for me, things are slowly reopening around NYC, a positive given that I can now more directly support some of my favorite businesses, from coffee shop Qathra to whiskey bar Sycamore. I’m also still missing live music more than ever, but doing what I can to support by viewing livestreams and benefit shows by the likes of Audiotree. It’s all about doing your part — I hope that’s the case in your region as well. These businesses need our support more than ever (and that goes for a great deal many menswear brands, too!). With that in mind, let’s dig into a few brands that could use our support at the moment — some you’ll recognize, certainly. Enjoy your weekend, thanks for reading & stay safe!
Great soaps from a great brand — for a great cause.
Let’s take things back East for a second, shall we? It’s been a pleasure and an honor to follow along with what legendary menswear designer Todd Snyder dreams up season after season — including the sporting heritage-inspired Todd Snyder Racquet Club. I covered the launch of the new Todd Snyder spring collection for GearMoose, (if you haven’t read it yet), so check out that feature if you want gear for hot days and breezy summer nights. Oh, and another thing: Todd Snyder’s 40% off sale runs now through the 24th, so be sure to shop that sale now here.
Alright, so before I let you go for the weekend, I’m going to direct you toward yet another must-buy for the season. Namely, you’re going to need a stylish polo or three for the hot summer months. On that note, the exceptional Taylor Stitch Heavy Bag Polo could just be the perfect purchase to sort out your summer wardrobe. Read more here via the Style Pick of the Week series. OK, my friends. That’s going to wrap things up. Stay safe out there.
My friends, thanks for joining us yet again for another Friday Read. Consider this a starting point for your weekend and a bit of a look at the menswear industry at large, from deals and steals to ways to give back to COVID-19 relief efforts (like my friends at HELM Boots continue to run, for one). These relief efforts should be of particular interest during these trying and challenging times, so any way in which brands can offer support is very welcome indeed from my perspective. And as always, if you’re a medical professional or a frontline first-responder, THANK YOU for your service and your work ethic — it really is incredible and much-appreciated. With that being said, in times like these, it can sometimes seem odd to talk about menswear — like that rugged spring shirt seen above (it’s the Flint and Tinder Stretch Utility Shirt). But I’m of the opinion that style and routine can provide a helpful guiding light these days. So, we’ll continue to shine a light on the best spring style essentials on the blog, and hopefully, you’ll like what you see and what you read. Heck, if that classic shirt at the top of the page piqued your interest right off the bat, head over to Huckberry to shop the Flint and Tinder High Desert Collection — while also checking out the very well-curated Huckberry Journal. It’s another great source of quarantine reads — I hope you find today’s roundup helpful, too.
This weekend, I’ll be following much the same routine, socially distanced here in Brooklyn. That includes spinning plenty of vinyl (my latest purchase is the excellent “The New Abnormal” by NYC rock legends The Strokes!), and of course, enjoying some terrific coffee (namely, from the FourTillFour x Taylor Stitch partnership). As for your own weekend, I wish you safety, health & all the best! Read on below for more crucial content.
Who doesn’t appreciate some rugged workwear when the going gets tough? I know I do — and you’ve now got another reason to love iconic workwear brand Dickies. The brand is converting its plants in Mexico and Honduras to produce FDA-compliant isolation gowns for hospitals and healthcare workers in response to the ongoing pandemic. And get this — Dickies and its parent company, VF Corporation are looking to produce anddeliver 50,000 gowns in May, with a goal of making as many as 675,000 by June, and then on up to 3.4 million (yes, million) by September. Great work.
And with that, we’re going to wrap up today’s Friday Read. Have suggestions for what you might like to see on the blog, or in these posts (perhaps a weekly playlist? Spirits or beer recommendations? Specific clothing categories?)? Be sure to reach out to me on Twitter. I’ll leave you with one last guide for the weekend, covering how to wear a chore coat for spring. To tide you over until Monday, don’t forget about tomorrow’s Style Pick of the Week. Once again — stay safe, stay healthy, and thank you for reading.
And a final, secret word if you scrolled this far — maybe check out this Taylor Stitch moto jacket below??
Folks, if you follow me on Instagram or read this blog, you’re perhaps well-aware that I love a rugged pair of Blundstone leather boots. That being said, if you’re not acquainted with the brand, it’s high time you got up to speed — and on that note, I was proud and excited to be able to cover Blundstone’s 150th anniversary for The Manual earlier this season. Read up on the brand, then step out there in your new favorite boots.
‘Tis the right time to buy some of the best men’s sunglasses, is it not? The arrival of sunny weather means you’d better have your rotation in order, so why not have a little fun when shopping for some new spring shades? That is to say, why not check out the simply stunning, retro-inspired Oliver Peoples x Gregory Peck Sunglasses, as covered by your favorite menswear writer (me!) over at GearMoose? The lauded sunglasses brand worked with the famed actor’s estate to create sunglasses that pay homage to his role in “To Kill A Mockingbird” … so you know they’re stylish and sharp as can be.
Alright, my friends. If you’re anything like me, you know and love and appreciate the fact that Levi’s makes some of the best men’s jeans (and maybe the best jean jacket?) on the market. That approach to cool, classic style aligns perfectly with some seriously cool music, as it were. In fact, Levi’s are my jeans to wear to a concert, but since we’re all staying safe at home, the brand is bringing some music to you with its 5:01® Live series (at 5:01 p.m. PST/8:01 p.m. EST — a play off its iconic 501 Jeans), supporting musicians and charities during livestream concerts. Tonight’s guest (for those of us on the East Coast?) — the terrific & energetic Sylvan Esso, with So Cal indie rockers Local Natives — one of my favorite bands! — set to appear on the 21st. Head here to read more, and rock on.
Last but not least, staying safe and in good health is top of mind, is it not? So why not do so in a sustainable way? Pick up some newly launched, moisturizing hand sanitizer fromby humankind at the brand’s Web site, and crucially, know that $1 of each hand sanitizer sold goes to The Robin Hood Relief Fund — providing emergency support to those in the NYC area. Hats off to that!
So, before we head on into the weekend (a modified one, to be sure), I’ll direct you toward one more spring style essential you should consider adding to your wardrobe. For yard work at home, socially distanced hikes, a quick jaunt to pick up some to-go beer, throw on some of the best men’s leather boots … for spring. Yes, for spring. If you click through, you’ll read all about what makes a pair of Truman Boot Co. boots so essential. Alright, my friends. That’s all for today. Enjoy yourself and stay safe out there.
Maybe you’re going to be working from home a lot more now? A stylish hoodie is certainly necessary, then.
We’re right at the start of another Friday Read and another spring weekend, and an unprecedented one, at that. These are trying times we live in, to be sure (you know what I mean). What’s a guy to do with myriad concerns swirling around, and without even a whisper of spring sports to watch in the meantime? And that’s the least of our worries, to be sure. In the midst of it all, know that I sincerely appreciate you reading this blog — it means an awful lot. Perhaps you’re working from home a ton right now — to be sure, that’s why you can view the Flint and Tinder 10-Year Hoodie at the top of the page. Along with suggesting you pick up one of the best men’s hoodies, well, might I suggest a few reads to take your mind off the rest of the news? That’s what I’m here for, at least. Perhaps consider reading up on this disaster gear kit as covered by Gear Patrol, too (seriously — those gear picks cover a variety of situations across the country and the globe).
The ultimate “bug-out”‘ bag, as Gear Patrol says, can come in handy in plenty of different seasons, too. If you or a loved one is dealing with a health crisis at the moment, I’m wishing you all the best — and a speedy recovery. If your work is impacted by today’s current events, I’m also wishing you the best. If you could use even more menswear features to take your mind off things, head to, well, last week’s Friday Read (covered: The best shampoos, a durable new watch from Huckberry, and spring outerwear). At any rate, hopefully, the below menswear reads can help you take your mind (momentarily) off what’s going on out there. If you want to talk all things #menswear for a change, head to Twitter or my Instagram. OK, let’s get this weekend rolling.
There’s plenty going on out there, but I’d bet you haven’t completely given up getting dressed in style … have you? There’s little that a stylish spring shirt can’t help you fix when it comes to your daily ensemble, so read up on my guide to lightweight spring shirts at The Manual, featuring brands you know and love (like Billy Reid and more). Let’s get to it.
Yet again, I’m here to tell you that spring style shouldn’t fall by the wayside — composure is key, after all. That’s where my guide on how to wear the best men’s chinos comes in handy. Simply click over to that post and check out the right way to wear (among other style picks) the Flint and Tinder Selvage Chinos. There’s really no wrong way to style ’em.
Last but certainly not least, because you could probably use a little something else to read, let’s stop back by The Manual to check out a neat music — the 7 most influential record labels of all-time. How cool is that? I’m going to be spinning some vinyl this weekend, that much I know.
Before we take off for the weekend — or more likely, kick back and relax — how about reading all about the must-have shirt jacket you need for spring? It comes from my friends at Billy Reid, who know a thing or two about getting you ready for the season in style. Alright, my friends — that’s all for today’s Friday Read, but we’ve got another Style Pick of the Week incoming tomorrow. Be sure to stop by — oh, and take care out there (and wash your hands!).
Step into the weekend the right way — with these tough leather boots.
Are you laced up and ready to head into the weekend? I know I am — and if I had my way, I’d be wearing some of the best men’s leather boots as shown above: The Nick’s Boots MP-M1 Boots. They’re a perfectly rugged pair of leather boots to wear all weekend (and in my humble opinion, they’d do very well when worn to a favorite brewery or craft beer bar). If you end up picking up those stylish leather boots, let me know. In the meantime, we’re rolling into a busy February with today’s Friday Read. It was another edition of New York Fashion Week: Men’s here in the city this week, which led to quite the juggling act for me — hopping from my agency day job to runway shows by menswear luminaries like Todd Snyder, who showed a perfectly refined, throwback-inspired collection of beautifully tailored outerwear and trousers. It helps that he also served delicious craft beer from Brooklyn’s Threes Brewing at said runway show earlier this week!
The fun didn’t stop there, though — I found time to fit in another one of my passions, that passion being great live music. I swung through the recently revamped Webster Hall (a legendary venue in its own right) to see California rockers Cold War Kids, a personal favorite. I had previously seen them in Brooklyn (in 2018) and Nashville (back in 2017), and they always put on a blistering set. Standbys like “Hospital Beds” and “First” amped up the night, as did my favorite song by the So Cal rockers — the hard-charging, inspiring “Miracle Mile.” Tracks off the band’s most recent album, “New Age Norms 1,” featuring more soulful numbers and gospel-esque production, fit in surprisingly well throughout the night, too. All told, when you blend a night of great rock music with, say, a couple cans of cold PBR, it doesn’t get much better. That being said, I’m looking forward to a relaxing weekend in the borough, powered by plenty of coffee and some of my favorite vinyl records spinning. Check out our Friday Read below, then come by tomorrow for the Style Pick of the Week. Cheers!
Bear with me for just a moment here — there’s truly no reason you can’t wear your favorite summer watch in the winter. How does that work out? Well, I’m giving you the full rundown in my latest for The Manual (Hint: It’s all about texture and rugged style).
Give the gift of rock n’roll this Valentine’s Day (or any time at all, really) with the latest from Happy Socks — the Happy Socks x Linda & Johnny Ramone Collection harnesses everything that’s cool about rock n’roll in one effective collection of stylish socks, and it celebrates their iconic relationship at the same time. You’re turning up the volume on your style quickly here.
Before we officially head into the weekend, stick around to shop some of my favorite new menswear deals — everything from a slick leather moto jacket to a rugged flannel shirt is in the mix, as it should be this season. Have questions on what else you should be shopping or wearing? Let me know on Twitter. Enjoy the weekend!
A rugged denim shirt to layer up with on a winter weekend.
We’re on the edge of another winter weekend — I hope you powered through your week with speed & style in mind! And I hope you’ve got your eye on that remarkable Buck Mason denim shirt shown above — it could be the perfect winter layer when paired with, say, your favorite henley, and it’s the right way to gear up for whatever’s on your plate this weekend. Notably, winter style essentials should be top of mind, and that’s what we’re going to dive into here for another edition of The Friday Read. Whether it’s a modern flannel shirt or the perfect way to wear your leather bomber jacket, I guarantee you we’ve got something for you — plus, a healthy dose of the best menswear news at the same time. So again, what’s on your plate this weekend? For me, I’ll be working away on the blog (be sure to follow The Style Guide on Facebook!), as well as heading to a double birthday party of sorts being thrown by my cousin — craft beer and BBQ are on the menu, make no mistake! I’ll also be enjoying some coffee at Brooklyn’s own Sweetwater Coffee and Tea,and likely swinging by one of my favorite menswear and home goods shops, the always-excellent Modern Anthology. Of course, given that it’s a long holiday weekend, I’ll be out and about in Prospect Park a fair amount, too — in short, I can’t ask for much more from a few days in Brooklyn than that. To follow along with what I’m wearing (and imbibing, and listening to), head to my Instagram. Oh, and before I forget — make sure you’re layering up with that Buck Mason denim shirt shown above. For now, enjoy the start of your weekend!
OK, that’s going to wrap up today’s Friday Read. Did you find what you were looking for? If not, take a look at my latest roundup of the best new men’s gear — we’re covering everything from rugged flannel shirts to the best new winter boots, so I think you’ll more than be able to gear up in style this season. OK, that’s really it for now — enjoy your weekend!
The perfect winter jacket for the holidays and beyond.
OK, who’s ready for another winter Friday? The last winter Friday before Christmas, at that! Still wondering what gifts to buy for the stylish guy on your list? I’ve got you covered. And today’s Friday Read is going to take care of business quite nicely, too — you’ll find out about a new Taylor Stitch jacket, gifts for the whiskey lover, and plenty more. Of course, we’d be remiss not to mention one of the best winter jackets as shown above, a durable and weather-ready Faherty Brand puffer jacket (the Polar Fjord Puffer, to be exact), that’s worth investing in as you dress for the polar vortex (or wherever your holiday takes you). I won’t exactly be needing a rugged winter parka, however — this weekend, I’m hitting the road to sunny Florida yet again for a relaxing week of Christmas vacation! I was just in Florida for a lovely and relaxing Thanksgiving (as seen on my Instagram), and I’m very excited to get back! It’s always a wonderful time in Fort Myers, from trying out new and old breweries (Point Ybel Brewing is a perennial favorite) to taking in fun holiday activities like checking out the illustrious grounds of the Edison Ford Winter Estates, done up with excellent holiday decor. For now though, I’ve got my holiday party to enjoy at my day job, and a bit of a search for last-minute holiday gifts to undertake this weekend. Get your own weekend started the right way with another edition of the Friday Read — cheers to the season!
As we said above, ’tis the season to layer up in style with one of the best new men’s jackets for your closet — in this case, we’re talking about a handsome bomber jacket from Taylor Stitch, as covered by yours truly at GearMoose. It’s both elegant and rugged at the same time — it’s the perfect holiday layer, in short. Heck, it could even be a reliable suggestion if you’re still searching for what to wear to your holiday party.
Just when you thought the good folks at Florsheim couldn’t churn out men’s shoes that were any more essential or stylish, they drop the Florsheim Fuel Reflect Capsule, a new, ultra-shiny and sleek set of dress shoes with some futuristic iridescent design touches. Perfect for, again, that last-minute holiday party. I covered it for The Manual, so check it out if you’re in need of some stylish dress shoes.
Now, we’ll turn back to GearMoose for another crucial holiday gift suggestion. I didn’t pen this particular piece, but that doesn’t mean I’m any less enthralled by this roundup of the best gifts for whiskey lovers — perfect to gift to the guy who loves a great Old Fashioned.
Lastly, it’s been a momentous year for music – favorite albums of mine included two ethereal releases from Brooklyn indie rockers Big Thief (that’d be both “Two Hands” and “U.F.O.F.”), as well as the excellent “Remind Me Tomorrow” by the lovely Sharon Van Etten. Of course, it goes without saying that “I Am Easy To Find” by The National is an all-time favorite, too. That being said, it’s always fun to read about the best albums of 2019 from a different perspective — in this case, Stereogum has put together a list of the top 50 albums of 2019, and it’s certainly worth your time.
This jacket is seriously tough and rugged — perfect for a winter weekend.
Given that it’s a late November weekend, it’s understandable if you’ve got rugged winter style — and holiday gift shopping, for that matter — on the brain. Case in point: Perhaps the excellent Peregrine Bexley Jacket shown above is on your shopping list (or your holiday wish list). And if you weren’t ready for winter before, I’d wager that a rugged waxed jacket is going to help get you ready in a hurry. Again, Peregrine means business — so too, should your winter style. OK, let’s get to the rest of today’s Friday Read. First and foremost, I’m excited to close out a busy week in Brooklyn, which featured a show at the excellent Elsewhere venue in Bushwick by indie rockers Wild Nothing. Yes indeed, it’ll be high time for some much-needed rest and relaxation back home, including a late fall stroll through Prospect Park and an Old Fashioned or two at my favorite bar in Brooklyn. This week was exciting in other ways, too — the lineup was announced for The National Homecoming Festival, an incredible Cincy fest put on by (and celebrating!) my very favorite band … yes, of course, The National. I went to the first edition of the festival in April 2018, and for this go-round, I already have my tickets! Needless to say … I couldn’t be more thrilled to return to Ohio next year! Will I see you there? Let me know on Twitter. In the meantime, be sure to get your weekend started on the right foot with today’s Friday Read.
In matters of style, first and foremost, one of the best men’s blazers can take your look from good to great, whether you pair it with your favorite henley or with a crisp Oxford shirt. And there’s something to be said for doing things a bit differently in that regard — like switching up the texture and fabric of your blazer. And on that note … I wrote about my favorite corduory blazers for The Manual, so you can dress for the season with ease.
I mentioned above that we’d be telling you about the best men’s winter jackets for the season here, including one from the rugged gear purveyors at Filson. Well, ladies and gentlemen … that time has come. Specifically, I covered the excellent Filson Double Mackinaw Wool Jacket over at GearMoose, and you can rest assured that it’s ready to go anywhere this season (yes, even to Thanksgiving dinner!).
Speaking of seasonal dressing — as in, dressing for Thanksgiving dinner — you might find this recent #OOTD covering what to wear on a chily fall day comes in mighty handy as you prep for the rest of November and December.
OK, before you go away for the weekend … stick around with my guide to the best new menswear for fall and winter, why don’t you? I think you’ll find precisely what you’re looking for when it comes to winter style essentials, including a tough shirt jacket, some standout whiskey for fall and winter, and rugged leather boots aplenty. That’s where your weekend should start — where will it take you? Adventure in style & thanks for reading!
Essential, rugged moc toe leather boots for plenty of occasions.
Let’s step into Friday the right way — with the lowdown on some of the best men’s leather boots for fall. More specifically, the exceptionally rugged and tough Quoddy Bowhunter Boots, some of the toughest and most stylish boots to wear with olive chinos (as shown above), light wash denim (yes, for fall!) or your favorite corduroy pants as we roll into another fall weekend. They’re the kind of stylish leather boots I’ll be wearing this weekend, in fact. On that note: It’s tough to believe it’s November, and even more difficult to believe … it’s been about three years since I visited my alma mater, Michigan State University in East Lansing! The time’s flown since I’ve been back, and together with some former student newspaper friends from The State News, I’ve decided it’s high time I ventured back to the Midwest for a Spartan football game, some tasty beers at HopCat, and a crucial brunch at Beggar’s Banquet — all favorite pursuits during my college days! I have a special place in my heart for the lovely MSU campus & the friendships and memories I made along the way — it’ll be wonderful to return home! There will of course be tailgating and cold beer aplenty throughout the weekend once I arrive on an early-morning flight into Detroit, and I’m also seriously looking forward to taking in some classic Michigan fall weather as my beloved Michigan State Spartans play Illinois. Naturally, I’ll be wearing some of my favorite fall style essentials along the way — what about your weekend plans? Let me know on Twitter, be sure to check out tomorrow’s Style Pick of the Week, and kick off your weekend nice and early with today’s Friday Read. Go Green!
If you follow my writing work at The Manual, perhaps you’re familiar with the Everlane Uniform Collection, a well-curated set of daily men’s style essentials made to be worn, well, on the daily and also mixed-and-matched at will. And if not? I wrote about the Everlane Uniform Collection for the site, so you can get up to speed in a hurry.
Let’s shift to more handy and helpful everyday carry gear. It can be relaxing, meditative and cathartic to stroll around your favorite park (mine happens to be Prospect Park) with your favorite tunes on repeat (The Walkmen, anyone?) — add a new favorite copper flask into that equation, and you’ve got the recipe for a lovely fall afternoon. To wit: Bring the Whiskey Leatherworks Copper Flask to your next camping trip, your next day hike, or your next bonfire — but first, read my latest briefing for GearMoose.
So, that’s the end of today’s brief-yet-hopefully enlightening Friday Read. Because weekend fun is never done, though, I’m going to leave you with my recommendation for perhaps the best fall jacket, one you can wear with ease atop your favorite Oxford shirt alongside slim faded denim. It’s a surefire combo for all your top casual fall pursuits, from apple orchard visits to brewery tours & beyond. Cheers to the weekend, my friends!
