The Thursday Buy: The New Shinola Runwell Grey Watch is one of the Coolest Timepieces on the Market

Best leather watch for men.

For as important as it is to stock your full rotation of menswear essentials for spring — like the best rain jacket, for instance — it’s also crucial to make sure your accessories are on-point, like seeking out one of the best leather watches for men. No outfit is complete without the little details (word on the street is that folks notice both the watch on your wrist and your shoes first), so why not invest in the best with a rugged new Shinola men’s watch? Sounds pretty ideal, right? Don’t you and I both know it. I’ve talked plenty on the blog about the rugged appeal and timeless style points of the Shinola Runwell and other styles — like the hard-wearing, weather-ready Shinola Duck Watch, too — but there’s something a bit different about the Shinola Runwell 47mm in Matte Gray.

The 47mm case diameter, for starters, is a bold and tough Shinola favorite, the kind that might be too big on some wrists but sits nicely on others (remember, they also make the Shinola Runwell 41mm). This new edition of the Shinola Runwell can certainly take a few dings, but it’s the gunmetal PVD brushed case finish that takes it to the next level in terms of durability and eye-catching style. Trust me, your watch collection needs both, and the Shinola Runwell 47mm in Matte Gray delivers.

Best everyday leather watch for men.

The Shinola Runwell 47mm in Matte Gray features other useful, Shinola-esque details, like a handsome bit of contrast between the black dial, crisp white markings and the vibrant Shinola logo detailing (again, it’s the little things that make a big difference). There’s a helpful sub-dial and within that tough watch case, the Shinola Runwell 47mm in Matte Gray is powered by the brand’s Argonite 1609 quartz movement. Quartz is a less expensive movement in the watch world, but that’s what helps make the Shinola Runwell 47mm in Matte Gray such a steal anyways — it looks like a much more expensive watch, but is priced reasonably at $675. That’s part of who Shinola is as a brand: Making some of the best men’s watches at agreeable prices, packed with plenty of style details. Yes indeed, the Shinola Runwell 47mm in Matte Gray is next on my wish list when it comes to the best watches for men.

To finish things off, the brand places the Shinola Runwell 47mm in Matte Gray on a remarkable whiskey cordovan leather strap. That contrast between black and brown just works handsomely, giving you the option to wear your new favorite watch with rugged, durable leather boots, indigo blue jeans and one of the best men’s henleys, or with stretch washed chinos and a classic Oxford shirt back at the office. Any way you wear the Shinola Runwell 47mm in Matte Gray, it’s going to come through in matters of both style and precise timekeeping. Go forth and add it to your collection, my friends.

The Friday Read: The Taylor Stitch Yosemite Shirt, New Whiskey and the Best New Leather Watch

You’ll be the talk of the town if you pick up this shirt in advance of the weekend.

There’s no question about it, the best flannel shirt for fall — and particularly for an early fall weekend — has got to be the rugged, purely essential Taylor Stitch Yosemite Shirt. It’s your new favorite shirt, it doubles as a rugged overshirt, and you can style it plenty of different ways. In short, just know that this is the best men’s shirt for a fall weekend … like this one that’s on the horizon right now! I always love my fall weekends in Brooklyn, from the idllyic confines of Prospect Park to enjoying a rich IPA or crisp Oktoberfest at choice Brooklyn haunts like Gold Star Beer Counter. I’m still waiting on the weather to shift to slightly colder temperatures, but when it does, Taylor Stitch is what I’ll be wearing as I enjoy my favorite beers.

And on tap for me this weekend elsewhere? Some Michigan State football, to be sure, plus preparing plenty of fall style content for the blog and of course, my Instagram. It’s always nice to be able to take some time to relax after travel, too. Again, if you follow me on Instagram, you perhaps saw that I was in Denver last weekend to see my favorite band, indie rock heroes The National! The city is an exceptional one, blending a love of the outdoors with stunning beauty and a host of quirky, cool spots, like My Brother’s Bar (the oldest bar in Denver!) and pioneering Denver brewery Great Divide Brewing. Elsewhere, I also enjoyed a highly affordable and seriously tasty breakfast at Sam’s No. 3 on Sunday to close out my trip, and I also visited the minimal and modern menswear shop Steadbrook — and of course, CREMA provided crucial refreshment & energy throughout. Speaking of great gear, it was also a treat to check out the menswear & gear market expo American Field on Sunday! It’s a yearly traveling showcase highlighting American-made brands (like Topo Designs, a personal favorite!), complete with plenty of craft beer and coffee to test out from local markets (Denver, in this case!). AF heads to Brooklyn this November, too. Not bad at all. Have you been to Denver? What’s next on your radar in terms of trips? Oh, and I almost forgot — let’s get to the Friday Read below!

  • As we shift our attention toward fall and style that’s ever-so-slightly rugged, it would behoove you to reach for a rugged leather watch that can stand up to the rich textures and fabrics of your fall style essentials. To wit: I covered the Dango TK-01 Trek Watch, a heck of a tough leather watch to bring you into the best season for menswear. Check it out at GearMoose.
  • Speaking of fall essentials, one could argue that the best new whiskey is a fine fall essential to have on hand — and in that regard, it was a pleasure to dive right in and cover the 1792 Aged Twelve Years Bourbon for GearMoose. It’s a pleasing fall sipper that’ll warm you up on many a chilly fall or winter night.
  • And let’s close things out today with more essential, seasonal gear from Taylor Stitch — namely, the rugged Taylor Stitch Camp Pants are exactly what the doctor ordered if you’ve got to go off-trail, get upstate or simply suit up in rugged fashion for a chilly tailgate. Don’t sleep on these, folks!

OK, my friends — we’ve called out this handy, seasonal #OOTD in the past, but it’s worth calling attention to again. Wondering how to dress for early fall? Of course you are — that #OOTD as mentioned above can help, guaranteed. Alright, that’s a wrap on the start of this early fall weekend — cheers!

An eye-catching blue dial and a refined, rugged leather watch strap? That's a match made in heaven.

An eye-catching blue dial and a refined, rugged leather watch strap? That’s a match made in heaven.

If you’ve ever spent hours (days?) looking for a stylish, affordable casual watch, you know the struggle can be quite, as they say, real. That’s certainly the case for your Style Guide author, as I love building up my watch collection — but I had a bit of a tricky time starting out. That is, until I found out what the great folks at Timex we’re doing. Their approach to durable, crisp-yet-casual watches is second-to-none, and when you pair up a classic Timex Weekender with a Horween leather strap? Well, that’s a done deal. Yes, the form-function-form Horween Leather Timex Weekender checks all the boxes you might want to check in terms of a stylish casual watch — and if you’re familiar with the brand through great sites like Dappered, you likely knew that already. In the looks department, the blue-dial Timex Weekender — one of a handful of form-function-form watch options available via Huckberry — absolutely kills it. Know that the Timex Expedition and Weekender Fairfield iterations are stylish and durable, but it’s tough to top the classic Weeknder. There’s nothing too fancy about the classic Weekender case design, but its durability is on-point, and the hand-crafted Horween leather strap — the hallmark of the form-function-form line — is a sight to behold. From your everyday chambray shirt and a waxed trucker jacket to sturdy boots and a navy blazer, this watch combo can nearly do it all.

Subtly stylish and designed with durability in mind.

Subtly stylish and designed with durability in mind — this is the versatile watch you need now.

And really, what’s not to love about a watch like this one? The Horween leather strap, like other options from form-function-form, is handmade in the brand’s small Florida studio, and again, it might just be the perfect complement to the versatile Timex  Weekender dial. It’s a dedicated, nuanced approach to product design that mixes function and, well, form. And that extends to the brand’s other small leather goods, like lovely burnished leather wallets. Oh, and you’d do well to give brand founder Shawn a follow on Twitter, while we’re here.  Of course, it doesn’t get much better than knowing you’re getting a product that’s handmade with fine attention to detail — unless you consider the price. And in that case, things do indeed get better. Crucially, you can grab the form-function-form Horween Leather Timex Weekender for $88 via Huckberry, or for $98 via the brand’s site. And then, I’d say you should wear it all the time — especially with favorite staples like an indigo wool chore coat and slim, American-made chinos. Heck, it works for dressy situations with a winter blazer, too. Any way you look at it, it’s a stellar deal that’s simply not to be missed. And it’s a stellar watch that you’ll want to wear … heck, maybe all the time.
