Online Shopping Picks: Shop The Best Men’s Fall Shirts Right Now

In terms of fall style essentials, there are some categories you need to take care of before it gets too late. And that’s why we’re diving into the best men’s fall shirts today on The Style Guide — and these picks aren’t the same ones that are going to get you through spring and summer, that much is true. We’re talking rugged, tough shirts with some heft — pieces like the Taylor Stitch Utility Shirt — and essential, everyday shirts like a classic Filson flannel shirt. But we’ll get to all of that in a second. Just as with the best men’s boots for fall, picking out a stylish and rugged fall shirt comes down to the details — the fit, the fabric and the mix of quality for the price. Look for comfortable, warm fabrics that are easy to layer over other seasonal pieces, like a striped henley or an American-made Oxford. And look for richer colors in darker, earthy tones, which should pair up nicely with everything from classic suede chukkas to broken-in leather boots. That’s just the start of today’s essential rundown, though. Check out my picks below, chime in on Twitter with your thoughts and leave any questions in the comments section below! Cheers.

#1. Portuguese Flannel Briteiro Shirt — $125

A well-made, tailored flannel shirt for the office and for the weekend.

Does anything scream fall quite like a classic flannel shirt? Portuguese Flannel has painstakingly crafted the Briteiro Shirt with premium quality and premium fabrication — no scratchy flannel here. And the Briteiro Shirt also has a pleasingly tailored look — that means you can wear it with slim tan chinos and stylish men’s dress shoes to the office just as easily as you can pair it with tan leather boots and black denim for a unique bar-going outfit.  Add a rugged dive watch, and you’re set for anywhere your weekend takes you.

#2. Relwen Tweed Snap CPO — $248

Is it a shirt that’s also a jacket, or a jacket that’s a shirt? Either way, Relwen has done a great job with this new fall essential.

Part of the beauty of fall revolves around throwing on rugged, versatile layers — like the Relwen Tweed Snap CPO. Part shirt, part jacket, the Tweed Snap CPO from Relwen is crafted with a strong silhouette and warm fabric. The Tweed Snap CPO can certainly pull double duty; throw it on over your favorite chambray shirt to take a weekend stroll through the park, or team the Tweed Snap CPO with a striped henley to head to a bonfire or a beer tasting. It’s a ready-made accessory to pieces like classic blue denim and tough leather boots, too.

#3. Filson Vintage Flannel Work Shirt in Black and Cream — $145

A classic, work-ready offering from a company that’s made rugged gear for generations.

If ever there was a company that defined the classic flannel shirt, it might just be Filson. The brand’s Vintage Flannel Work Shirt gets all the details right, from the unique black-and-cream check combo to the sturdy, durable fabric. The Vintage Flannel Work Shirt is certainly an investment-worthy piece, the type of shirt your dad might have worn (or still wears) to do yard work on chilly fall days. The good news is, the Filson Vintage Flannel Work Shirt will serve you just as well for work or play (I like it best to wear to a tailgate atop a stylish team T-shirt).

#4. Mollusk Surf Shop One-Pocket Shirt in Tobacco Plaid — $110

A rich, well-crafted fall shirt from Mollusk Surf Shop.

Fall is all about welcoming richer colors into your wardrobe, from dusty, earthy hues to the classically fall vibes of the Mollusk Surf Shop One-Pocket Shirt. I know I’m a fan. The Tobacco Plaid color of this stylish fall shirt hits the nail on the head. The One-Pocket Shirt should team up nicely with casual, faded American-made denim and a garment-dyed crewneck tee, and you should also feel free to layer this Mollusk Surf Shop shirt with a classic crewneck sweater for a weekend brunch outing.

#5. Taylor Stitch Utility Shirt — $148

Here’s your next fall shirt — made for rugged fall adventures, yard work, tailgates … you name it.

As first seen in this site’s See Now Buy Now series, the Taylor Stitch Utility Shirt is exactly the type of shirt we’re talking about when we explore rugged fall shirting. Made in a cool Moss Merino Herringbone fabric, this rugged fall shirt is practically made for layering with a Taylor Stitch henley and inky blue selvedge denim. You can — and should — wear it for getting out and doing yard work, going on a day hike or heading to a fall bonfire. The Taylor Stitch Utility Shirt is that versatile.

#6. Iron and Resin Ridge Shirt in Tan — $148

Iron and Resin

A distinctly cool, stylish shirt from a brand that normally makes gear for the open road.

Iron and Resin is perhaps best known for its moto-inspired gear, but the brand also makes stylish off-duty and off-road gear with the best of ‘em, like the Ridge Shirt. The Iron and Resin Ridge Shirt features a rich seasonal color scheme that works with charcoal trousers and a navy herringbone blazer for your 9-to-5. Make no mistake though, the Iron and Resin Ridge Shirt might team best with slim black denim and stylish leather Chelsea boots for grabbing a weekend brew  â€¦ or four.

#7. Abercrombie & Fitch Cotton Herringbone Shirt — $58

Abercrombie & Fitch

A vintage-inspired shirt with cool texture and cool design details.

Want an affordable option in terms of stylish fall shirting? Abercrombie & Fitch, a brand that’s constantly on the up-and-up in terms of modern takes on classic styles, can help with that. Just as with the Abercrombie & Fitch Chamois Shirt, the Cotton Herringbone Shirt is a rugged fall layering essential, finished in a neat fall fabric and set apart thanks to design details like a button chest pocket. Wear this shirt with olive chinos and tan suede chukkas to head to a fall beer festival.

#8. Life/After/Denim Academy Shirt in Heather Grey — $138

A crisp shirt that works for both casual and more tailored situations.

The Academy Shirt from Life/After/Denim, like other options on this list of the best men’s fall shirts, certainly isn’t all that cheap. But as you might have seen in our #OOTD on how to wear a denim jacket this fall, the Life/After/Denim Academy Shirt can team with outfits both casual and more tailored. Feel free to team it with a navy herringbone blazer and dark denim for classic business casual style, and keep this shirt handy to head to a weekend house party alongside grey selvedge denim.

That’ll wrap up our list of the best men’s fall shirts. It’s certainly not comprehensive of every single brand you could pick up, but for my money’s worth, there are some excellent picks on this list when it comes to rugged fall shirts. My personal favorite might be the durable, versatile Taylor Stitch Utility Shirt, fit for weekend strolls and rock concerts alike. Of course, the Life/After/Denim Academy Shirt packs a crisp punch in terms of business casual style, as does the Abercrombie & Fitch Cotton Herringbone Shirt. And if it’s laidback-yet-classic fall style you want? Reach for the Filson Vintage Flannel Work Shirt or the equally durable Iron and Resin Ridge Shirt. For wearing with your favorite pair of denim on the weekends, the Mollusk Surf Shop One-Pocket Shirt should get the job done nicely, too. Perhaps you prefer your fall shirting with a bit of tailored style? That’s where the Portuguese Flannel Briteiro Shirt comes into play — you could even rock that shirt with a tailored worsted wool suit and stylish dress shoes. But I’ll leave the styling up to you. Let me know in the comments if you’re adding to your wardrobe rotation this season!

See Now, Buy Now: The Life/After/Denim Varsity Cardigan Is Your New Fall Sweater

Life/After/Denim

A cardigan that blends throwback style with an easily wearable fabric and cool styling details.

Does it feel like fall yet where you are? Maybe just a bit? I hope so, at least. Fall is an excellent season for fans of both rugged and refined #menswear, and that means that the Life/After/Denim Varsity Cardigan could be your new favorite fall sweater — trust me on that. Crucially, the Life/After/Denim Varsity Cardigan comes into play just in time for the season and just in time for another See Now, Buy Now entry. Life/After/Denim specializes in premium, easygoing menswear, with a focus on taking classics and updating them with excellent fabrics, distinct washes and cool styling details. If you read our piece on what to wear when working remotely, you might recognize the Awash Hoodie from the brand — and I’d put the Varsity Cardigan in a similarly versatile, stylish category. It’s the type of layering piece you can wear nearly anywhere, for one. You can take the Life/After/Denim Varsity Cardigan to the office atop a classic Oxford shirt or wear it over a slim striped henley to the bar or to catch a ballgame at a friend’s house (don’t let anyone give you crap about wearing a cardigan, either).

It’s essentially the ideal fall layering piece, what with its 100 percent textured cotton construction. That means it’ll breath nicely atop something like a slim denim shirt while still offering some protection from chilly fall breezes. You could even team the Varsity Cardigan with a slim chambray shirt and a scarf if you wanted to ditch a jacket one day. Yes indeed, the Life/After/Denim Varsity Cardigan  even channels a little retro, sport-inspired style thanks to the striped detailing. Oh, and the neutral heather grey color of the Varsity Cardigan makes it a fine complement to olive or khaki chinos, slim faded denim or classic slim black denim. Heck, you can even team it with a crisp dress shirt for a dressy first date. There’s not much the Life/After/Denim Varsity Cardigan can’t do — that makes it a seasonal essential, agreed?

And the result is a versatile and stylish fall jacket.  The Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker also features the sort of silhouette that’s casual enough for fall weekend layering with a slim striped henley, yet equally ready to wear with an American-made Oxford and dark denim to the office on casual Friday (or casual … Thursday?).

And the Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker  packs quite the punch in terms of functionality, too. In addition to the weather-resistant exterior, it’s lined with herringbone cotton flannel, a warm feature that doesn’t look half-bad if you happen to flip back the sleeve cuffs. And the hardware? Why, the Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker  is finished with antique metal buttons featuring the F&T logo — a neat touch that’ll get better with age. You can also pick up the Flint and Tinder Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker in a sleek shade of Coal and a fall-ready shade of Whiskey, but for my money’s worth, I can’t get enough of the Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker in the unique shade of Havana. Wear it with slim black denim, wear it with faded American-made denim or olive chinos … and don’t forget the rugged leather boots.

See Now, Buy Now: Layer Up This Fall with the Outerknown Lowtide Hoodie

A stylish hooded sweatshirt? That’s what we’re talking today.

Is there such a thing as a stylish hooded sweatshirt? Absolutely — and the Outerknown Lowtide Hoodie might have just answered that question for you. Crucially, the Lowtide Hoodie is here just in time to combat early fall nights where it’s breezy but not cold enough for a heavy coat — you certainly need a layer like that when it comes to menswear essentials.  Just as with dressing for a bonfire or one last evening on the beach or at your lake — the best nights, by the way — seasonally appropriate style is still called for. And that means the Outerknown Lowtide Hoodie is a prime addition to our ongoing See Now, Buy Now series. What’s the biggest step in picking a stylish hooded sweatshirt? Well, Style Guide reader … there are two, actually. It starts, first and foremost, with picking the right fabric — the Lowtide Hoodie features a textured terry toweling cloth exterior and a brushed fleece interior. That means the Outerknown Lowtide Hoodie feels great to wear over  a classic men’s T-shirt while providing breathability and protection from a slight evening chill at the same time. The Lowtide Hoodie is a perfectly casual piece, featuring raglan sleeves for a flattering fit and mobility. The Olive colorway of this Outerknown hoodie also makes it easygoing and laidback, easy to style with slim light wash jeans or your favorite chino shorts.  It gets better, though.

Outerknown makes all of its gear — including the Lowtide Hoodie, of course — with that critical blend of sustainability and style in mind. And there’s a reason this tee is perfect for the last few outdoor evenings of the season — Outerknown is designed in part by legendary surfer Kelly Slater, a guy who knows a thing or two about the great outdoors. That also means the Lowtide Hoodie looks at ease atop a rugged henley around a bonfire — and it looks just as simply stylish when you wear it under a black denim jacket for watching Saturday kickoff with your buddies. See, a versatile, stylish hooded sweatshirt can be found — and the Lowtide Hoodie might be the best place to start.

That’s it for this week’s See Now, Buy Now entry — stay stylish!

Fall 2017 Men’s Style Wish List

Today marks a post that I always look forward to here at The Style Guide — a look toward a new season, the start of the best time in menswear …. our annual Fall Style Wish List. If you can believe it, this is a tradition that dates all the way back to 2014 … pretty wild, ehh?  And the good news is, we’re back this year with a list of men’s style essentials that’s even bigger and better than ever. Fall ties together so many things that make #menswear great, from the opportunity to pile on added layers to the chance to step out in rugged gear at nearly all times. So, stylish wingtip boots, a rugged striped henley and dark blue denim all join our wardrobe rotations yet again.  Trust me, this is the gear to buy for the  season.  And plenty of brands are harkening back toward classic styles while updating them with modern fits and fabrics. That means we’ve got plenty of rugged style essentials to cover in our Fall 2017 Style Wish List. Without further ado … stow your beach gear, put away those flip-flops and load up on the best menswear for the fall season. We’re ranking these picks in no particular order, so you can chime in with your favorites on Twitter or follow along as I style some of my top seasonal picks on Instagram.  We’ll see you out there!

Taylor Stitch Mercerized Merino Henley — $98 (When Signing Up for Bespoke Post)
Taylor Stitch

The rugged fall layer your closet needs now — courtesy of Taylor Stitch, naturally.

If you follow along with our Style Pick of the Week series, you recognize this stylish, well-crafted Taylor Stitch Mercerized Merino Henley. Made from premium fabric that’s at once hearty and breathable, this slim striped henley could be one of the more versatile pieces you pick up this fall. It layers with ease under a chambray shirt, it works quite well underneath a black moto jacket and it looks casual and rugged all on its own. Taylor Stitch does it again.

Mark Albert Classic Chelsea Boot — $225
Mark Albert Chelsea boots

Supremely well-crafted and more than ready for fall.

Stylish leather Chelsea boots have turned into a must-have every season of the wear, darn near. But there’s something about the Mark Albert Classic Chelsea Boot that makes it seem particularly ready for fall. From the rugged, rich brown leather to the tough construction and the ability to pair up with rugged seasonal staples with ease, I’d say these Mark Albert Chelsea boots are a tremendous bet on the footwear front.

Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket — $148
Taylor Stitch

A stunning shirt jacket from Taylor Stitch that’s going to look the part when it comes to fall excursions.

Let’s add another item from Taylor Stitch to this fall style wish list, ehh?  When it comes to rugged fall layering, you need more than just a striped henley — you need something that’s well-crafted, versatile and eye-catching … in the best way possible. That’s where the Maritime Shirt Jacket comes into play — it’s going to look right at home with slim dark denim and your favorite pair of brown leather boots.

Roark Revival HWY 41 Denim Jacket — $79.98
Roark Reviva

A jacket that exudes timeless style and more than a bit of rock n’roll cool.

Want a stylish denim jacket that’s anything but ordinary? Then you’re going to want the Roark Revival HWY 41 Denim Jacket, a silhouette that’s at once edgy and yet just a bit classic. It’s the kind of jacket that could easily be worn cruising down the highway on a motorcycle — right? And yet, even if you don’t own a chopper …. there’s something cool and fall-ready about this rugged denim jacket.

Taylor Stitch Slim Jean in Cone Mills Standard — $69 (When Signing Up for Bespoke Post)
Taylor Stitch denim

The ideal way to complement the rest of your Taylor Stitch gear — agreed?

OK, so we’re not quite done with Taylor Stitch menswear in this list yet.  If you’ve already stocked up with a slim striped henley and a rugged shirt jacket, what better way to finish off your ensemble than with a pair of classic dark blue denim? Did I mention they’re made in America and available for under $7o — yes, $70 — when you sign up for Bespoke Post? There you go.
Huckberry x Lum-Tec GMT Watch — $498
Huckberry x Lum-Tec

Just the sturdy, durable timepiece you need on your wrist this fall.

When I think fall style, I certainly think of rugged, tough menswear staples — and your watch shouldn’t be an exception to that trend. The Huckberry x Lum-Tec GMT Watch is a beastly timepiece that doesn’t mess around — it’s a durable watch stands up visually (and physically) to other hearty menswear pieces. I’m thinking the Huckberry x Lum-Tec GMT would pair well with the legendary Taylor Stitch Rover Jacket and perhaps those slim Cone Mills denim jeans as seen above.

Original Penguin Pigment Overprint Shirt — $89

Original Penguin

A uniquely colored, richly textured shirt for fall layering.

Fall calls for darker, richer colors, just as it calls for heartier and more rugged textures. This Original Penguin overprint shirt brings in a little bit of both. The pigmented denim-type texture and rich color (Pomegranate, to be specific) give it some weight and visual interest — it’s the perfect pairing with grey selvedge denim and sharp black Chelsea boots.

Flint and Tinder 10-Year Pullover — $89

A decidedly stylish hooded sweatshirt upgrade.

Plenty of gear from Flint and Tinder regularly makes the pages of this site — and for good reason. The brand crafts its staple pieces — like the Flint and Tinder 10-Year Collection of stylish hoodies — in America, and with plenty of attention to detail.  The 10-Year Pullover in particular would be a fine addition to any lineup of men’s style staples; it’s the sort of sweatshirt that you can even wear over a classic Oxford shirt this fall without missing a beat.

Bradley Mountain Rambler Duffle in Brush Brown — $279

A rough-and-tumble bag that’s ready for any fall adventure you can dream up.

Our fall style wish list is about more than clothes, mark my words. Case in point: The stylish weekender bag you need to bring with you on fall adventures aplenty. The Rambler Duffle is aptly named and aptly constructed; it’s the perfect size for a weekend away, with enough room for you to pack your other favorites from this list (the Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket, anyone?).
Hudson Shoes Corelli Suede Dip Dye Boots — $198 (When Signing up for Bespoke Post)

Textured, rugged suede chukka boots fit right in with the cooler climes of fall.

Did we save the best for last? Well, I personally love the Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket, so I can’t be sure. But I’m certainly sure of the fact that the Corelli Suede Dip Dye Boots are a heck of a fall style pick-up thanks to the seasonally ready color and texture. Plus, the slim-yet-substantial profile if these Hudson Shoes boots teams well with slim Cone Mills denim or dark black denim in equal measure — just add that Taylor Stitch merino henley we discussed earlier, and you’re good to go.

Alright, Style Guide readers — did you stick with us until the end? Which of the above picks did you most gravitate toward? I certainly can’t get enough of rugged suede chukkas like the Hudson Shoes Corelli Suede Dip Dye Boots, and it’s really tough to top something as essential as the Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket … but that’s just one man’s opinion! What do you think? Weigh in via the comments below or at the Style Guide’s Facebook page!

See Now, Buy Now: Your Next Oxford Shirt Is Made in America by Flint and Tinder

Flint and Tinder

Just one way to wear the stellar, remarkably well-made Flint and Tinder Oxford via Huckberry.

If there’s a shirt that stylish guys like you and me could — or should — wear everyday, it’d be the classic Oxford shirt. And luckily for you and me, the latest entry in The Style Guide’s See Now, Buy Now series fits the bill quite perfectly; it’s simply a piece that should likely buy, well, right now.  We last talked about stylish wingtip boots for fall, and the astonishingly well-made, well-fitting and great-looking Flint and Tinder Texas-Made Oxford is assuredly next in line as you plan out your fall style wish list. Call it the changing of the seasons or the soon-to-be-changing color palette in nature, but as we look toward fall (and rugged fall style), yours truly is quite partial to the Flint and Tinder Charcoal Oxford . It’s worth noting that each of these classic Oxford shirts is stylish as heck, though. From the can’t-go-wrong light blue Flint and Tinder Oxford to the brand’s crisp white Oxford shirt, each can go just about anywhere (and it’s absolutely an asset that either one would team well with a pair of American-made denim from the fine folks at F&T).

And it’s certainly just as beneficial that they’ve found the right company to make these durable, modern-fitting Oxford shirts — a family outfit by way of El Paso that’s dialed in the slim-but-not-tight fit and well-crafted fabric (wearable even in the summer). Having checked out the Charcoal Oxford Shirt seen above, I can certainly vouch for this line through and through. An eye-catching blue dial and a refined, rugged leather watch strap? That's a match made in heaven.

An eye-catching blue dial and a refined, rugged leather watch strap? That’s a match made in heaven.

If you’ve ever spent hours (days?) looking for a stylish, affordable casual watch, you know the struggle can be quite, as they say, real. That’s certainly the case for your Style Guide author, as I love building up my watch collection — but I had a bit of a tricky time starting out. That is, until I found out what the great folks at Timex we’re doing. Their approach to durable, crisp-yet-casual watches is second-to-none, and when you pair up a classic Timex Weekender with a Horween leather strap? Well, that’s a done deal. Yes, the form-function-form Horween Leather Timex Weekender checks all the boxes you might want to check in terms of a stylish casual watch — and if you’re familiar with the brand through great sites like Dappered, you likely knew that already. In the looks department, the blue-dial Timex Weekender — one of a handful of form-function-form watch options available via Huckberry — absolutely kills it. Know that the Timex Expedition and Weekender Fairfield iterations are stylish and durable, but it’s tough to top the classic Weeknder. There’s nothing too fancy about the classic Weekender case design, but its durability is on-point, and the hand-crafted Horween leather strap — the hallmark of the form-function-form line — is a sight to behold. From your everyday chambray shirt and a waxed trucker jacket to sturdy boots and a navy blazer, this watch combo can nearly do it all.

Subtly stylish and designed with durability in mind.

Subtly stylish and designed with durability in mind — this is the versatile watch you need now.

And really, what’s not to love about a watch like this one? The Horween leather strap, like other options from form-function-form, is handmade in the brand’s small Florida studio, and again, it might just be the perfect complement to the versatile Timex  Weekender dial. It’s a dedicated, nuanced approach to product design that mixes function and, well, form. And that extends to the brand’s other small leather goods, like lovely burnished leather wallets. Oh, and you’d do well to give brand founder Shawn a follow on Twitter, while we’re here.  Of course, it doesn’t get much better than knowing you’re getting a product that’s handmade with fine attention to detail — unless you consider the price. And in that case, things do indeed get better. Crucially, you can grab the form-function-form Horween Leather Timex Weekender for $88 via Huckberry, or for $98 via the brand’s site. And then, I’d say you should wear it all the time — especially with favorite staples like an indigo wool chore coat and slim, American-made chinos. Heck, it works for dressy situations with a winter blazer, too. Any way you look at it, it’s a stellar deal that’s simply not to be missed. And it’s a stellar watch that you’ll want to wear … heck, maybe all the time.
