The Friday Read: My New Favorite Watch, Pedro Pascal’s Trucker Jacket & Tropical Getaway Gear

Best vintage-style watch for men.

Folks, thanks for joining me for the latest Friday Read, a perfect way to roll on into your weekend (if I do say so myself). I’m coming off my birthday weekend (as you saw if you follow me on Instagram!) and I’ve been back at it this week with plenty of freelance writing pursuits.

So: Let’s start off this weekend by taking stock of, say, your watch collection. I’m frequently on the lookout for stylish men’s watches that are durable, rugged and versatile, be it something like the Shinola Bronze Monster Automatic or my go-to watch of choice as of late from Dan Henry Vintage Watches.

Best rugged dive watch for men.

The company virtually offers a historic stroll through the watch world, looking at classic men’s watches from the late 1930s through to the 1970s, then putting a modern twist on them. This leads to a nice mix of rugged but dressy details, dependable designs and some seriously cool strap and dial combinations, like my watch of choice: The Dan Henry 1975 Skin Diver. It features a 39mm retro-style case, a handsome black dial and a contrasting brown rubber strap.

In short, it’s one of the best men’s watches to wear on cold winter nights with a shawl cardigan and flannel shirt, since it’s casually rugged and seriously cool. So, that’s the timepiece I’ll be wearing this weekend as I make my way on an upstate trip (again, follow me on Instagram to keep up!). For now, here’s the rest of your Friday Read. Scroll on accordingly, my friends.

  • Perhaps you, like much of the rest of the country, have been enthralled by the HBO zombie apocalypse drama “The Last of Us,” starring none other than Pedro Pascal. And by now, I’d wager you’ve also read a thing or two about the show, including some insight into Pedro Pascal’s “The Last of Us” trucker jacket. After all, fighting off zombies is hard work, and naturally, our protagonist turned toward the immortal Flint and Tinder Waxed Trucker Jacket. As you know if you read the blog, it’s a Huckberry classic, and if you want to get that very same look, snag yourself a fresh one now.
  • By now, you’re probably getting just a bit sick of the frigid cold, right? I’ve got a solution for you: While I can’t plan out your next tropical getaway, I can indeed help you figure out what to pack for your next vacation. Keep it breezy, colorful and light — I wrote about the best style essentials for a tropical getaway over at Men’s Journal. Time to start planning and packing, folks.
  • Since I’m hitting the road this weekend, I’ve been thinking about the best travel pants this season (and beyond). Accordingly, you should check out Wednesday’s blog post on the best pants for travel from Bonobos — here’s my full take. Cheers and good luck out there!

That should tidily wrap up your guide to weekend must-haves, be it a new packing list for a breezy vacation or the chance to shop Pedro Pascal’s “The Last of Us” trucker jacket. In the meantime, stay stylish, look for tomorrow’s Style Pick of the Week and we’ll see you out there!

#OOTD: How to Wear a Waxed Trucker Jacket This Fall

You wake up one morning, and you know: Fall is well and truly here. You open your window, that crisp, cold air hits … and immediately, your mind jumps to your lovingly stored jackets and sweaters. It’s time, once again, to really start dressin’. How exactly are you going to do that? It’s simple, really. Start with one of the best waxed trucker jackets as sold by Huckberry, then go from there. The fall season already looks mighty different (no college football, for one), but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t dress to experience the pleasures of fall — a to-go brewery trip or a socially distanced orchard visit might be the norm these days, but today’s #OOTD has all the stops covered. To wit: We’re talking even more of the best picks for fall, so as to ensure you’ve got day-to-night style on lock. That means a stylish merino henley and a Levi’s western shirt, for starters. From there, we’re lacing up tough leather boots and throwing on a Shinola leather watch. The overall effect is rugged and functional without going overboard — and it’s going to look great on many a chilly fall day, guaranteed. Check out the full look below, and as ever, head to Instagram to see how I’m dressing this fall. Cheers!

A tough waxed trucker jacket, worn the right way for fall.

Can you feel it in the air? Fall’s best adventures are ahead of us yet, I just know it. When you make a Flint and Tinder waxed jacket the centerpiece of your outfit, only good things are in store — in my humble opinion. This look gets a rugged shot in the arm via both a rugged Western shirt and of course, perhaps the perfect base layer for fall — they’re going to work in harmony to keep you warm and comfortable on the go, no matter what (and when you need to take your trucker jacket off, you can rest assured knowing you still look put together). For mobile, adventure-ready style that works from the trail to the brewery, the Topo Designs Dirt Pants are the right way to go (note the drawstring waistband for comfort). Those straight-fit cotton pants should sit mighty nicely atop some of the best leather boots for fall, a pair coming at you courtesy of FRYE. There’s also never a bad time to throw on the Shinola Runwell Watch, one that works with rugged gear picks like these — as well as dressier fall style situations (when those do occur, that is to say).

If you’re rolling solo and enjoy having a podcast or your favorite indie rock in your headphones, then Master & Dynamic headphones are the only way to go here (wireless functionality makes ’em well-suited for plenty of fall excursions). And of course, to haul your everyday carry essentials, a Filson twill bag is the right move. What’s your take on this look? And where will it take you this fall? Be sure to let me know on Twitter. Again, thanks for reading!

#OOTD: The Waxed Trucker Jacket You Need Now

Editor’s note: You’ve surely seen this hashtag lots of different places, including on Instagram. But how does that carry over to real life? The #OOTD series will take one great item and put together a versatile, stylish outfit around it. Look for past features here.

The men’s jacket you wear every single day needs an upgrade. Now, first of all — am I commanding you to buy a great waxed trucker jacket? Do you really need one? Maybe. Maybe not. But, hey — if you feel like that’s an outerwear addition to make here in late February, The Style Guide has you all set.  You’ll probably recognize the brand we’re featuring below, but that’s a side note to why this unique, rugged and yet easily wearable silhouette can work with different iterations of your #OOTD in the weeks to come. If we’re lucky, we’ll start to see slightly warmer temperatures in the weeks ahead — so, it’ll hopefully be time to shelve your polar vortex gear for pieces that are a little more temperate. That’s where a flannel-lined trucker jacket comes in. You’re getting both warmth and weather-beating functionality (in the event of a rainy spring day) with a bit of dashing and rugged appeal thrown in. And who doesn’t love that? The unique thing about the particular jacket shown below is the rock-n-roll edge it adds to the overall ensemble — but I won’t spoil it any further. Read ahead, skim if you must and follow yours truly over on Instagram and Twitter to keep up with the #menswear fun.

Mixing a heritage-quality jacket with a bit of rock-ready edge -- and classic menswear essentials, to boot.

Mixing a heritage-quality jacket with a bit of rock-ready edge — and classic menswear essentials, to boot.

The Jacket: Flint and Tinder Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker Jacket, $198 — It’s a good thing there’s still plenty of stock left for this jacket. As I understand it, it’s been quite the hot seller over at Huckberry — if it’s sold out in your size, the JackThreads Stupp Suede Trucker Jacket provides a similarly edgy silhouette.

The Shirt: Abercrombie & Fitch Garment Dye Oxford Shirt, $39 — I’d urge us all to try mixing a classic piece — like a timeless white Oxford — with an edgier staple (a tough trucker jacket) this season. It’ll work out just fine.

The Sweater: JackThreads Donegal Sweater, $29.98 — Spring weather might be around the corner *crosses fingers* … but we can’t shelve those sweaters yet. Pick up this nicely textured number for a bargain in case it’s chilly or rainy in the weeks ahead.

The Denim: JackThreads Slim Stretch Selvedge Denim, $44.98 —  Let’s make it two in a row with stylish JackThreads gear — this pair of stretch selvedge boasts a unique color and a slim fit.

The Boots: Thursday Boots Diplomat Boots in Cognac Suede, $199 — We love ourselves some Thursday Boots on the blog, and this particular pair feels and looks mobile and flexible for the approaching spring season.

The Socks: Flint and Tinder Inventor Socks, $17.98 (Three-pack)  —  Finish this outfit off with Flint and Tinder socks to complement that waxed trucker jacket.

The Watch: Form-Function-Form Horween Leather Timex Expedition, $79.98 [Also available in Brown Leather] — This Expedition watch — with its more rugged, outdoors-y vibe — is finished off handsomely with a beautiful Form-Function-Form Horween leather strap.

The Everyday Carry: Tactile Turn Stainless Steel Slider Pen, $58.98 — Who doesn’t love a durable, useful pen — ehh? It should come in seriously handy every single day. If you’re out and about for a solo lunch, a notebook can be your best companion when it comes to brainstorming ideas (or just doodling).

Have you bookmarked any of the above pieces for later? If that’s the case, I think you’re gonna like the results.  The key to this look is starting with an unexpected piece of outerwear that’s actually highly versatile — the trucker jacket hits the sweet spot in terms of transitional, head-turning style. And we can all get more use out of everyday staples like a classic Oxford and a textured Donegal sweater. Of course, I’m never one to pass up a beautifully accented timepiece like the Form-Function-Form Horween Leather Timex Expedition, and you might be surprised at how handy a small item like the Tactile Turn Stainless Steel Slider Pen can be. OK, ready for that snow to melt? That makes two of us. Stop by The Style Guide Facebook page in the meantime, and join us for another applause-worthy men’s style post tomorrow.

Here’s to you and thanks for reading,

A much-coveted, super-durable jacket that's ready for all sorts of fall conditions.

A much-coveted, super-durable jacket that’s ready for all sorts of fall conditions.

The time is now to stock up on one of the best men’s trucker jackets. After all, there’ll soon come a time where you’ll ask yourself: Can you feel it in the air? Maybe? A little bit? It might just be, dare I say it… the perfect time to break out the Flint and Tinder Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker Jacket. Now, it’s newly restocked, but it won’t be around for long. It made this site’s Fall Style Wish List, and as we’ve said repeatedly at The Style Guide, fall might just be the perfect time for menswear. To beat the chilly k no further than the latest introduction from the great folks at Flint and Tinder and Huckberry . Part of the excellent Flint and Tinder fall collection, the Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker Jacket very well might be your new fall )and winter?) go-to when it comes to outerwear. The season certainly did get off to a bit of a late start this year, but that’s not to say you won’t get plenty of use out of this stellar coat for several months to come. It layers up very nicely over a classic chambray shirt and it’s the ideal complement to a classic Flint and Tinder henley (wouldn’t you know it?). Oh, and you could even boldly layer it under a navy topcoat for just a dash of rugged-refined style. Why exactly should you drop nearly $200 on this waxed trucker jacket? Well, that’s easy.

Sturdy hardware and a modern fit also make this jacket a great investment.

Sturdy hardware and a modern fit also make this jacket a great investment.

Just as with all of Flint and Tinder’s stylish knitwear, the Waxed Trucker is made in America using high-quality materials and detailing that’s simply top-notch. That starts with silver hardware and rolls right on through to the modern fit and durable waxed 7oz. Martexin sailcloth. You can even customize the fit to your liking with slide buckles at the waist. Yessir, this thing is sturdy as heck. It’s cut to hit above the waist, just like your favorite spring denim jacket. But, there’s something a bit tougher about this jacket – namely, that tough waxed sailcloth exterior and flannel lining, both of which will more more than ably stand up to biting fall winds and chilly rain — or snow, if you layer it under a topcoat. It’s certainly the kind of jacket you should look to wear as much as possible (particularly given that price tag). Team it with a flannel shirt, wear it over a stylish cardigan and rock it time and again with a merino T-shirt and dark denim the next you dash out to grab coffee. Oh, and you might do well to layer it over Flint & Tinder’s ridiculously durable 10-Year Hoodie, too. It’s going to work in slightly dressier situations, too – truly. You can certainly swap this Flint and Tinder jacket out for a blazer at the office, but it’s a reliable layering piece. Give the Flint and Tinder Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker Jacket a try sometime, ehh? It should be every bit as good as advertised – and then some.

Get the Flint and Tinder Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker Jacket as soon as you can at Huckberry.
