The Friday Read: The Very Best Fourth of July Weekend Sales & A Brazilian Getaway

Huckberry Summer 2025 menswear.

After a bit of a vacation from our Friday Read dispatch last week, we’re back in fine form to roll into the holiday weekend — with as much leisure, style and cold beer as our friends at Huckberry shown above. As it were for the Fourth of July weekend, I’ll miss out on the holiday itself: My latest international jaunt has taken me (along with my lovely Mary!) south of the Equator to Brazil to celebrate a close friend’s wedding in Sao Paulo — and our trip has gone beyond the major metropolis and on out to Atibaia, Monte Verde and more.

While the first leg of our trip saw us exploring Sao Paulo largely on foot (and by car), from rooftops to basement bars and sidewalk cafes, the next leg took us to the rolling mountains and foothills of Atibaia.

We’ve spent this last handful of days with a collection of American friends taking in the impossibly cool Mid-Century Modern designs of a lavish home dreamed up by renowned Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan (boasting four Eames chairs and a host of impeccable touches beyond that!). Even on the heels of a global jaunt to Amsterdam with Heineken late last month, our two-leg trip has proven invigorating, rather than exhausting — it’s funny how that works out, ehh?

Our time in Brazil has been wide-ranging, vivid and impossibly memorable, from a guided Jeep and hiking tour through Monte Verde to a positively delicious visit to Destilaria Monte Verde, not to mention rooftop sunset viewings and stops at both the Dengo and Sabor chocolate enterprises. Traditional Brazilian music, rich and strong Brazilian coffee, a multitude of Caipirinhas, even a Brazilian IPA or two were also very much in the mix.

There’s something vibrant and immediately inspiring about Sao Paulo: Chaotic though the city can be, with its massive melting pot of Brutalist and contemporary architecture, modern enterprise and old-world history, it’s simply one of the most distinct and engaging cities I’ve ever had the chance to visit (and if you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know that I’m fortunate enough to travel the world for both work and play very, very frequently).

I look forward to the day I can return, ideally with another large group stay at a house designed by renowned Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan — talk about quite the way to spend your holiday weekend (take another look at the house both above and below, courtesy of Sotheby’s and Bossa Nova).

For your own pursuits far afield, allow me to offer some gear recommendations, particularly when it comes to your wrist game: I wrote just yesterday about a rugged Shinola ceramic watch that’s built for each and every summer adventure. A stylish hemp buttondown from Flint and Tinder (which happens to be on sale right now!) might also prove fitting for day-to-night style, especially in the breezy climes of Brazil.

But for now, let’s turn our attention to the holiday weekend and to a carefully picked handful of the best 4th of July sales for menswear, gear and more right now — these are my top-of-the-line selections from just a small handful of your favorite brands, all fit for the days and weeks ahead.

And naturally, we’re back here on Saturday and Sunday with a duo of style selections. Cheers to travel, to fun in the sun, to cold beer and to a laidback holiday weekend, my friends.

Let’s keep this weekend rolling with a few quick sale picks, shall we? Here’s what I’ve got my eyes on for Fourth of July style, and since so many sales abound, I’m limiting this to my top five right now.

  • Huckberry: Your favorite online gear and menswear retailer is offering up to 40% off via the Huckberry Sale section.
  • Billy Reid: Here’s a standout sale from one of my favorite designers — get up to 30% off a mix of classic and modern Americana menswear.
  • Bespoke Post: Visit the NYC-based retailer and score at least 40% off gear, home goods, menswear and more.
  • Mack Weldon: Take 25% off the performance menswear company’s Summer Collection when you buy 2 or more products, with no code necessary.
  • Todd Snyder: Take an extra 20% off on-sale designer menswear from the iconic American brand with the code EXTRA20 through the Todd Snyder Summer Sale.

That’ll wrap up today’s latest weekend-ready dispatch — again, I’m wishing you fun in the sun with family and friends, plus a hearty dose of cold beer, along with menswear and gear savings aplenty. Thanks for reading, folks!

The Sunday Sale: Take 20 Percent off the Best Summer Menswear at Taylor Stitch

Best summer menswear at Taylor Stitch.

If your Fourth of July long weekend has been anything like mine so far, there’s likely been a fair amount of scouring the market for the best menswear deals, right? That’s the only way to do it (helped along by a few cold beers and some time in the summer sun), but there are a few summer menswear sales that are even better than you could possibly dream up.

Take the good folks at Taylor Stitch, a brand I’ve certainly had my eye on over the past few days (and weeks, and months, and years).

Long a favorite of mine, I’ve found that they deliver a bit of everything under the sun, from the best men’s shirts to stylish new sunglasses, breezy shorts and even lightweight sweaters for breezy July nights. And your weekend just got even better. You can get 20 percent off select styles for summer (and beyond) at the famed San Francisco retailer as part of the Taylor Stitch Summer Sale.

Best summer shorts for men.

Within the Taylor Stitch Summer Sale, you’ll find well-constructed, polished short-sleeve shirts, lightweight shorts, cotton hemp polos and even durable, rugged outerwear. Those picks come in a range of washed-out, classic colors, with enough variety to suit every style preference and wardrobe.

The better news is, it feels like the long weekend is just getting started (the Fourth of July is still two days away!), so you should certainly do yourself a favor and stock up while the gettin’s good at the Taylor Stitch Summer Sale. When I say there’s something for everyone, well, I practically guarantee it. Cheers to Sunday, folks.

Hey hey, whaddya say? “Dad-style” greetings aside, I’m about as upbeat as can be as we head into what should be a laidback (albeit unique) Fourth of July weekend. In fact, I’m about as laidback and relaxed as the Surfside Supply Shirt seen above, available via the good folks at Bombfell — it’s one of the best short-sleeve shirts for summer, with the kind of style you should look to channel this weekend (cold beer sold separately). I’ll be wearing several of my favorite short-sleeve shirts for summer all weekend long, not least because it’s time for the big one: A safely done trip back to Michigan to see my family after long, long months in quarantine in Brooklyn. I’ll be taking all necessary precautions as I leave the city, masked up and hand sanitizer going strong — and in Michigan, social distancing via my brother’s lovely house will be key. With my family’s approval, we all feel safe, healthy and ready for some quality time together! Above all else, it’ll be a relief to see family and visit (socially distanced!) with friends after some long, tough months in New York City.

You best believe I’ll be packing summer style essentials from brands like Taylor Stitch on the trip, and I’ll also be looking forward to sipping on some fresh craft beer and of course, chowing down on a few hearty burgers right off the grill.  What’s on your agenda for these strange and trying times? I can only hope it involves rest, relaxation, and of course … the Friday Read we’ve got outlined below. In search of new artwork for your home or a new, cool beer glass? Those tidbits can be found below (keep scrolling!). It also seems like as good a time as any to kick back with some relaxing summer jams — I put together this WFH playlist earlier this year, but now would be the right time to enjoy some laidback listening around the bonfire, right? Yes, indeed (think Yo La Tengo, Alvvays & Big Thief, to name a few!). Keep on scrolling for more from the world of menswear and beyond, and I’m wishing everyone a very happy Fourth of July weekend. Stay safe out there, folks!

A seriously cool way to enjoy your favorite beer.

  • Let’s talk for a second about beer to drink this weekend — or rather, a new beer glass to buy as you  imbibe your favorite craft beer for the Fourth of July and beyond. The good folks at Huckberry are now selling the seriously cool Whiskey Peaks Beer Glass, featuring a topographic impression of Yosemite National Park’s Half Dome. Is it one of the coolest beer glasses around — for this weekend and well beyond? Yes, sir — no doubt.
  • We just talked about the best glass for your beer, so … wondering what to sip on this weekend? In my mind, that’s easy — you’re going to want the aptly named Anchor Liberty Ale, an iconic craft beer that’s meant to be enjoyed during a hot day on the boat or a cool evening around a bonfire. Heck, if you’re in the San Francisco area, use the handy Anchor Beer To Go feature for curbside pick-up — those outside the Bay Area should head toward the Anchor Beer Finder to find this legendary beer elsewhere. Brewed 45 years ago to honor the 200th anniversary of Paul Revere’s famed midnight ride, this is a classic craft beer worth enjoying again and again.
  • If you’re not about the most sustainable menswear around, well, you should certainly change that approach. It gets all the easier when you consider Wellen from my good friends at Huckberry. This surf-and-sun brand channels laidback summer style to a “T,”‘ as you might have read about on the blog in the past. With that being said, I rounded up the best style essentials from Wellen for GearMoose — give it a read, then stock up accordingly.

That’s just about going to wrap it up for me today, folks. But wait … I’m going to leave you with one last Fourth of July style suggestion. You need to have some cool boat shoes on your feet this weekend, and better yet, you need to know how to wear boat shoes in the best way possible for the rest of summer. That’s where this #OOTD comes into play — in fact, the Todd Snyder x Sebago boat shoes featured in that piece are some of the most unique ones I’ve seen in recent memory. I hope you feel the same, and I hope you enjoy time with family & friends this weekend. Thanks for reading — next round’s on me!

Cheers,

-Beau

The Friday Read: Fourth of July Weekend, The Converse Star Series & Outerknown Shirting

Just one way to hit the ride for the Fourth of July weekend.

OK, my friends — we’re rolling into the Fourth of July weekend, just like the Montague Bikes Navigator at the top of the page. Hopefully, you kicked off the weekend with men’s style essentials yesterday, helped along by some rest, some relaxation, a delicious craft beer and a hot dog or two. That’s how I spent it in Brooklyn at Coney Island and Nathan’s Famous, enjoying the sights and sounds of a classic American destination. But now, we’ve got a double-whammy of sorts: A proper holiday weekend on tap. And if you’re the kind of person who loves to stay active on vacation, the above Montague Bikes Navigator is just the way to go about doing that. Now, I don’t have a bike myself (hello, subway!), but if I did, and wanted to bike around to breweries in Queens and beyond, I’d get one of the best foldable bikes out there. I myself am going to be sure to take in a relaxing, rejuvenating weekend in my favorite city in the world, helped along by a visit to Brooklyn’s own The Adirondack, plus some of my favorite summer style essentials, naturally. To start your own weekend the right way, you know exactly where to go — the below Friday Read, of course!

  • Now admittedly, if you’re a sneakerhead, you’ve probably known about the Converse Star Series for some time now. It’s a hot-selling new release packed with some of the best men’s sneakers I’ve seen in terms of functionality and forward-thinking fashion, and I covered it a couple weeks back for The Manual — if you’re interested in snagging a pair, head to places like StockX for the full scoop!
  • I talk often about how to make classic men’s style essentials work for you — pieces like the best men’s chinos, at that. For a laidback Fourth of July weekend, throw on a stylish short-sleeve shirt, slim chinos & suede loafers, then belly up to the bar with this #OOTD. Cheers!
  • Speaking of what to wear for Fourth of July weekend, you could do worse than a sustainable, classic short-sleeve shirt from Outerknown — as covered by yours truly over at GearMoose, in fact. Best get to it while there’s still time! The Best Basics. Summer Ready.

Let’s close out this post before you get to the Fourth of July weekend with one more handy piece of advice — you should be wearing a short-sleeve henley this weekend. In fact, you should be checking out my guide on how to wear a short-sleeve henley before you do anything (craft beer not included). OK, that’s everything I’ve got for y’all today — have a great weekend!

Style Pick of the Week: Red Wing Heritage Weekender Chukka

Editor’s note: Expect these posts weekly detailing one standout item coveted by yours truly. Sometimes, these fit within budgetary restrictions and other times, they’re expensive splurges worth saving for. For more Wish List items from Beau, head here, and to see other Style Picks, head here.

Huckberry Red Wing Chukka

Pair up lightweight chukka boots with a crisp pair of dark denim for a casual and patriotic weekend combo.

With it being the Fourth of July and all, we’re very much in a patriotic spirit here at The Style Guide. That carries right on over to footwear, and today’s made-in-America Style Pick, the Red Wing Heritage Weekender Chukka. Great footwear has been a focus as of late on the Style Pick series, including stylish leather sneakers fit for summer. But given that lots of us are hitting the road this weekend, there are certain things that should be in your bag and on your feet when it comes to what to wear for the Fourth of July. Crucially, a crisp, durable pair of chukka boots is a great way to upgrade your travel style. Seriously, a pair of chukka boots works with light wash denim casually, and fits right in alongside tan chinos for a more monochromatic, tailored look. The Heritage Weekender Chukka has just about everything you need for the weekend, too — note that sizes are somewhat limited (size 9-13), but as the boots run a half-size large, you might be all set to shop. Onto the specs — the Weekender Chukka is crafted from roughout leather that’s water, stain and perspiration-resistant, so it can tackle any hiking or walking across the weekend in style. Plus, the quality is self-evident, as it’s produced using S.B. Foot Tanning Company leather (just as the brand has done for decades on end). Still not sold on wearing boots in the summer? Bear with me — or walk with me?

Red Wing Heritage Weekender Chukka

A relatively trim silhouette, casual roughout leather and classic Red Wing styling touches make these worth the investment.

The Weekender Chukka takes a more casual, nuanced and lightweight approach to the silhouette, so it won’t weigh you down as much as a heavier pair of rugged winter boots. The Hill outsole is flexible yet dependable and durable, and the eye-catching striped yellow laces are a nod to classic Red Wing style. The brand’s ComfortForce footbed should also add to their wearability — an extra bit of reinforcement is critical when standing around waiting for fireworks or grilling out. Plus, the contrast stitching provides another point of visual interest, making them an even more casual pair of chukka boots. These are definitely chukkas you can rock with slim navy or olive chinos and a heather grey pocket T-shirt this weekend and beyond. And they’ll do just as well when worn with a slim short-sleeve henley and light chinos in a high-low style combo during other summer excursions. As to the rest of your style picks this weekend? Grab a durable weekender bag and maybe some other essential Fourth of July gear, and you’ll be set.

Get your pair of the Red Wing Heritage Weekender Chukka now (hurry!).

Enjoy the weekend, and go forth in style!

The Friday Read: Fourth of July 2016 Edition

Editor’s note: Expect these posts once a week on Fridays — consider this a jumpstart on reading for your weekend downtime. Expect a mix of style and non-style content. For more entries, click here.

We’ve reached another great summer long weekend — the Fourth of July! It’s about being thankful for our freedoms above all else, but it’s also a welcome vacation and a chance to get together with family and friends — hopefully in style. So, in true Style Guide fashion, today’s Friday Read is all about the holiday. It was a busy week in preparation for some much-needed time off — I even covered the best gear to wear for the holiday over at The Manual. Perhaps you had a busy week and are also looking forward to hitting the road, or at least enjoying some much-needed downtime. To mark a special occasion like the Fourth of July, it can be nice to kick back with a special cocktail — even if you’re a big craft beer fan, like myself. It’s a treat to enjoy a beverage that’s well-made and nuanced, like a lot of the finer things in life (especially #menswear). So it’s with that in mind that we’re giving you a holiday-centric drink option from the team at Johnnie-O — they sure do know how to make ’em, and if you caught my Masters 2016 cocktail post, you know that quite well. Check out the recipe below, plus a wearing suggestion from the brand, and read on for a few more Fourth of July weekend style tips.

The brand's 9OH2O Swim Shorts are a classic pairing alongside a tasty beverage.

The brand’s 9OH2O Swim Shorts are a classic pairing alongside a tasty beverage.

The Red Hot American Summer Drink

The Ingredients:

  •  1.5 shots of rum — the folks at Johnnie-O prefer Ballast Point Three Sheets California Small Batch White Rum
  •  1 sliced lime
  • 1/4 ginger beer
  • Cayenne pepper
  •  1 sliced jalapeño
The Process:
  • Place 2 lime wedges in a sturdy glass, using a muddler to crush the lime.
  • Fill the glass almost to the top with ice.
  • Pour the rum over the ice, and fill the glass with ginger beer.
  • Sprinkle cayenne to taste, and garnish with jalapeño.
  • Enjoy!

While it requires some ingredient-wrangling, the process of making and enjoying a great drink can be a lot like the pursuit of finding style essentials: Worth the wait. Right? Right. Now, if you’re looking for more menswear to complement your weekend, grab a pair of swim trunks from Johnnie-O, like the 90H20 Surf Shorts pictured above. But wait, there’s more! On the apparel front, the folks at lifestyle brand Kinfolk teamed up with La Paz on a 9-item capsule of light, airy and breezy continental style staples that could work this weekend and the rest of summer, including this excellent printed shirt and other pieces, among them some easygoing linen trousers (they’re a bit out of the ordinary, but if you find yourself hanging out near the water or on the coast this weekend, they could definitely work). Oh, and because we all love a few cold beverages while lounging in the warm weather, snag an item or two from the Herschel Supply x Coca-Cola collab — yes, you read that right. They’ve got an assortment of everyday carry essentials, from a tote to a backpack, all with insulated liners built in to keep drinks cool (and the fact that they’re made from recycled PET materials is another positive).

As to the rest of your Fourth of July style essentials, grabbing one of the best weekender bags out there is definitely in order, and some slim swim trunks or classic men’s sunglasses can’t go wrong, either. And if you need more warm-weather essentials or tips on how to style them, head over to my Instagram. Look out for tomorrow’s Style Pick of the Week, and a look at great dive watches coming on Monday.  Whatever you might do this weekend, enjoy the holiday, the time off and celebrating our great freedoms in style.

Enjoy the weekend, and stay stylish!
