So, if you’re a discerning #menswear fan like this guy over here, you’ve likely been thinking about the process of shelving your spring and summer sneakers — if you’re not already there, that is. If you’ve been reaching for your white canvas sneakers as it gets colder and colder, it might just be time to give ’em up (I know, I know — it’s difficult). But rest assured — The Style Guide is here with just the solution for you. And that solution happens to be an easily wearable, essential fall sneaker from the folks behind SeaVees and Huckberry — that would be the SeaVees Huckberry Chukka, to be exact (cue fireworks). Yes, this meeting of the minds is pretty sharp — to say the least. And it just makes sense, when you think about it. There’s no question that the good folks at Huckberry get it right when it comes to all things men’s lifestyle, and the team at SeaVees makes classic, crisp and versatile sneakers for all occasions. So lest you worry about wearing boots for days and weeks (and months) on end, the SeaVees Huckberry Chukka is here to solve those menswear woes. In fact, you should probably snap this pair up right this second — under $100 is about as solid as it gets for a well-designed, durable fall sneaker.

Available exclusively at Huckberry  — a pretty neat thing in and of itself — the SeaVees Huckberry Chukka has plenty going for it. As the Huckberry folks put it, the resulting sneaker puts a “California casual twist” on the classic chukka silhouette. Made from duck canvas in a neat sand colorway, this thing is durable, tough and versatile. The vulcanized gum rubber sole is yet another point of differentiation from the classic chukka, in a good way. It’s an excellent hybrid style finished off with leather laces and brass-reinforced eyelets — touches not seen on many sneakers. Those two additions make it feel a little more premium than a lightweight summer sneaker — it’s an elevated combination that’s practically begging to be paired with a fall blazer and a rugged henley for a cool-casual office look. Heck, wear them with an unstructured navy blazer, a blue Oxford and flannel trousers while you’re at it. Don’t forget an essential shawl cardigan, either. And the rest of the time? Wear them with nearly anything and everything. There might not be a better pair of fall sneakers on the market — the higher chukka-style cut gives them a more substantial look, meaning they can stand up to tough selvedge denim and a rugged chore coat with relative ease. Plus, the duck canvas and gum rubber sole are ready to crunch some leaves, hike a few trails and grab a brew as you watch a football game — seriously. That’s a heck of a lot of shoe — and a heck of a lot of fall style — for $98. With all that going for it, it’s more than worth it to pick up the SeaVees Huckberry Chukka.

The Friday Read: Bastille, U.S. Authentic Leather Jackets and National Sneaker Day

Do you ever reach the end of a week and look back at what a whirlwind it was? That was the case for me, starting even as the week kicked off. Live music is a real passion of mine, and in place of my typical Sunday dinner, I bought a last-minute ticket to The Meadows Afterparty — shows following the first-ever iteration of The Meadows Festival, to see an all-time favorite band, The Temper Trap!  Talk about an unexpected Sunday night opportunity and a tremendous show, at that. If you get the chance, the group’s new album, “Thick As Thieves,” adds a dash of blistering Southern rock influence to their impressive discography (hearing “Sweet Disposition” live was an absolute treat for a Sunday night!).

That led into another unexpected, last-second opportunity — you haven’t lived until you’ve scrambled to snag a ticket on StubHub for Bastille, the extraordinary pop-rock band who blew up the airwaves with “Pompeii” three years ago. It was a very rare treat to see them play at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, one of my favorite venues in New York City, as part of a special mini-tour preceding a truly global effort in support of their excellent second album, “Wild World.” It was made all the more special by the small crowd (see this video as an example!) and the fact that they played nearly all the way through the new album — soon-to-be hits like “Blame” and “Power” are truly live standouts! Catch them on tour if you get the chance (nudge, nudge). Of course, I took it all in stride dressed for a rock concert. It’s a privilege to be able to catch so many great shows multiple nights a week, especially here in the Big Apple! Please go see Bastille if you get the chance — you won’t regret it! And as to the rest of the week, well, we’ll just have to catch up on all things menswear below. It’s bound to be just as busy of a weekend, as I’m hosting my family up from Florida — look for a full personal style blog post coming on Monday!

  • So, get this — National Sneaker Day is coming up on October 9th (who knew?) and the folks at Brooks Heritage want to set you up right, namely with an array of colorful, classic silhouettes that they’ve perfected through the decades. It seems as you get more into menswear and dressing well, you begin to appreciate the nuances of clothing design, trends, colors — the whole nine yards. That translates, at least for me personally, into a greater interest in the deeper nuances of everyday life – things like home design, accessories, better-tasting coffee,  a greater appreciation for craft beer and nice food … you get the picture. And so it makes sense that lots of sites – and individual companies, from Huckberry to Bespoke Post and beyond, are catering to guys who are interested in nuanced style and lifestyle upgrades all the way across the board – not just in menswear. That’s created a trickle-down effect, and an opportunity, for companies who appreciate and practice craftsmanship and quality, particularly in the smaller areas of life – like leather goods, for example.

Issara is one such company that’s emphasizing quality and nuanced design in its pieces, creating premium offerings that can offer a style upgrade to an area you might not think about. Exhibit A: your laptop sleeve. I myself used a freebie I got back in college for the longest time – but when founder Rosh Govindaraj approached me last year about learning more about her brand and reviewing a sleeve, I began to think about the idea of larger upgrades as a whole, from a laptop sleeve to a nice leather bag to small home goods from the likes of Owen & Fred and beyond.

And Issara’s story is an attention-grabbing one, too – the brand’s name means “freedom” in Thai, and its roots stem from Govindaraj’s love of travel – and her search for well-made leather bag that didn’t cost an arm and a leg. So the brand was born, and its focus on working with two small workshops to produce its leather goods – including beautiful leather bags and minimal wallets – echoes the commitment to craftsmanship that so many are taking an interest in nowadays. The company’s emphasis on social responsibility and improving the lives of its workers is again a welcome change from headlines you tend to see across the fashion industry.

With all that being said, I can say that after taking the company’s Navy Laptop Sleeve across the globe and packed in my trusty Satchel & Page Slim Mailbag for daily work commutes, I’d recommend you look into making a similar upgrade yourself (budget permitting, of course).

Again, we’re not talking about something you can readily see, like a sturdy pair of everyday boots or tough chinos – but in the same way that those items can be used time and again, a dependable laptop sleeve can go with you everywhere, every day. Issara’s version in particular, while pricey at $129, is an investment that lives up to the price – and size options allow you to hold something as small as an 11” laptop or as large as a 15” laptop (like the sleeve hown here). Note that if you’re looking for something a bit different, Saddleback Leather also has a selection of tech sleeves. The navy color of this Issara piece is a nice neutral that stands out in a sea of plain black laptop sleeves (it also comes in a beautiful shade of Cognac). If you believe (like your humble author) that style is in the details as much as the overall product, then here’s a nice example.

It’s lined in slate grey twill, so that’s a neat touch with a bit of #menswear roots. The option to have your sleeve monogrammed for $10 extra is a customization that again can set you apart from the masses in a good way. The sleeve is sleek and stylish – it’s not often at all that you can say that about a laptop sleeve. While the price might seem a lot compared to the lower-budget options available, the protection and the thickness of the sleeve is solid, the Japanese zipper (with a leather pull) has proved sturdy, and the interior side pocket is just large enough to carry a 5” x 8” Public Supply notebook and a few pens.

This Navy Laptop Sleeve will definitely look handsome alongside everything from a standard leather briefcase to a durable satchel, and mine personally has stood up to being lugged around through airports and the subway just fine. The great thing about the sleeve itself is that it has more than enough room for a folder or two within, plus your laptop. And, as seems to be the case with people looking for more minimalism in their lives, you could feasibly carry the sleeve sans bag without it clashing at all alongside an #OOTD ensemble.

Ponying up that amount of money up front for a laptop sleeve might not be achievable at the moment for everyone, but like those dependable winter boots or a warm topcoat, it’ll feel great to use it as often as possible. And when the color and styling of a laptop sleeve falls in line with the sort of style you’re looking for in the rest of your outfit, that can only be considered a positive.
