#OOTD: The Best Way to Wear a Henley for Fall and Winter

Don’t yet have a rugged henley in your closet? Or perhaps you do, and you’re in need of a new way to wear it? Dare I say, the BEST way to wear it? Allow me to introduce you to the Flint and Tinder Slub Waffle Henley, the lead pick in today’s #OOTD.  When it comes to both comfort and warmth, the henley is a must-have for fall — particularly when done up in a cozy slub waffle cotton like this rugged henley here. And I think the #OOTD in question brings something a little bit different to the table. For starters, we’re layering it up with the ever-versatile Proof Strong Shirt, which gives this look a more polished feel. We’re also throwing in a dash of mobile, versatile with a pair of CIVIC chinos. What I’m trying to say is that you can take a staple layering piece like the Flint and Tinder Slub Waffle Henley and turn it into a look that’s as ready for the office as it is for Sunday brunch — truly. Add in stylish chukka boots and a go-anywhere watch, and you’re good to go … well, basically anywhere you want.  How do you wear your henley for fall and winter? On a related note, you can (and should!) shop the best men’s henleys as soon as possible. Cheers, my friends!

The right basics … that aren’t actually so basic. See more on how to wear this henley below.

  • The Rugged Henley: Flint and Tinder Slub Waffle Henley, $62 — From the domestic sourcing and materials to the netraul, easy-to-wear color and rugged waffle construction, this henley is a winner.
  • The Chambray Shirt: Proof Strong Shirt, $128 — A classic chambray shirt atop a henley is a fall and winter style move that simply works all the time, no doubt about it.
  • The Pants: CIVIC Frank Chinos in British Khaki, $128 — We’re all about blending the basics with the classics — in this case, these CIVIC chinos have a bit of both.
  • The Boots: Astorflex Greenflex Chukkas in Nubuck, $155 — A new addition to the Astorflex roster of stylish men’s boots, I love the Nubuck leather and durable look of these things.
  • The Belt: Dango Products CNC-Machined Belt, $79 — Is there such a thing as a beastly belt? Yes, there is. The Dango Products CNC-Machined Belt is one-of-a-kind.
  • The Socks: American Trench Merino Activity Socks with Silver, $19.50 — A classic, retro-inspired pair of socks? Check. Made with fabric designed to prevent odor? Check. The perfect pair of fall socks.
  • The Watch: Momentum Watches Flatline 42 Fabric Watch, $195 — Every so often, you just need a dependable, rugged casual watch — the Momentum Watches Flatline 42 Fabric Watch gets the job done.
  • The Essential Bag: Mystery Ranch 3-Way Briefcase, $150 — Although this Mystery Ranch bag is a little more rugged and casual than others on the market, that makes it a wise pick-up when it comes time to plan out fall adventures.

Now, does that sort out another #OOTD idea for fall and winter for you? On paper, this outfit might seem quite simple — the building blocks are just a henley and a chambray shirt, after all. But as we always strive to do here at The Style Guide, we want to amplify those pieces and go above and beyond — that’s why starting out with a classic, rugged henley like the Flint and Tinder Slub Waffle Henley is a better move than throwing on an average long-sleeve T-shirt.  It follows, then, that the Proof Strong Shirt is a similar style upgrade, paired up quite nicely with the casual-yet-mobile CIVIC Frank Chinos for style that fits in at the brewpub or brunch … or on a casual fall Friday at the office. That same versatility applies to the truly excellent classic nubuck chukkas that comprise the footwear portion of this outfit.  Throw in perhaps one of the best leather belts you’re ever going to buy, and your accessories are in great shape. That’s also the case with the Momentum Watches Flatline 42 Fabric Watch, a durable, laidback watch that takes care of business. Throw your everyday carry essentials into the Mystery Ranch 3-Way Briefcase, and you’ve got a recipe for success, whether you happen to be running errands, running to grab a coffee or heading out on a weekend trip.  Where is this #OOTD going to take you? Let me know on Twitter, my friends.

See Now, Buy Now: These Stylish Tricker’s Boots Belong On Your Feet Right Now

An outrageously great-looking pair of boots — they belong on your feet.

Mark my words, this won’t be the first time this week (or season) that we talk about the best men’s boots for any time of year, be it summer or fall or winter– far from it, in fact. Heck, it surely won’t be the first time you see the Tricker’s Low Leg Logger Boots on The Style Guide, either. They’re some of the coolest boots for men, and that’s an understatement. These rugged leather boots are striking and investment-worthy … so in short, they’re a perfect addition the lineup of men’s style essentials at Huckberry, ya dig? And the great part about the Tricker’s Low Leg Logger Boots  is … they’re quite unlike any other pair of boots we’ve ever featured on the blog. Truly. These are UK-made boots coming from one of the oldest shoemakers in England — that’s pedigree that not event U.S. shoemakers (a la Rancourt & Co.) can come close to claiming.

That makes them a surefire bet if you want timeless style that gives you some bang for your buck. Trickers is simply among the best in the best at what they do, and the Tricker’s Low Leg Logger Boots live up to that legend. They’re built sturdy all the way up, from the extra water-resistant leather (yes, extra) to the handsome profile and full leather lining.

SHOP: The Tricker’s Low Leg Logger Boots

The commando lug sole adds an extra touch of traction — to say the least.

So, you know Tricker’s is a revered English brand with an incredible depth of knowledge. What they’ve managed to do with the Tricker’s Low Leg Logger Boots is quite remarkable, too. The design is based off English logger’s boots, and that gives it an air of rugged, heritage-inspired style. The full-grain leather gets its extra water-resistant qualities from a unique waxing process, and a commando sole gives the Tricker’s Low Leg Logger Boots a TON of grip in inclement weather. But enough about the specs — how should you wear the Tricker’s Low Leg Logger Boots? The world really is your oyster. They can work with slim dark denim, a thermal henley and a classic chambray shirt . or you can use them to add some serious cool to a grey flannel suit. Fancy something more in between? I’d team the Tricker’s Low Leg Logger Boots with slim khaki chinos, your favorite denim jacket and a timeless Oxford shirt. But with a pair of boots this stylish, nothing beats the classics. I’m talking beat-up blue denim, a classic crewneck sweatshirt and — especially for the weekend — a great cup of craft coffee. That’s good enough for me, and I hope it’s good enough for you. Thanks for reading!

Style Pick of the Week: Luminox Atacama Field Automatic 1900 Watch

A rugged, durable and highly stylish addition to your watch collection.

It’s been some time since we’ve talked about a stylish casual watch here on the blog — but as the seasons change, so too does our coverage of men’s watches. Long story short: We’re getting back into it by talking about the outstanding Luminox Atacama Field Automatic 1900 Watch, a worthy entry on any list of the best men’s watches. That’s especially the case as we enter the chillier, more rugged climes of fall and winter — you need a watch that can stand up accordingly, and the  Luminox Atacama Field Automatic 1900 Watch fits the bill nicely. With a price tag that’s spendy but not all that outrageous ($749), this watch is a rare field-inspired timepiece that just so happens to look a little more dressy and refined. The Swiss construction is gorgeous and top-of-the-line, while the woven nylon strap is handsome and substantial.

The Luminox Atacama Field Automatic 1900 Watch is the type of timepiece where every detail has been considered, and that’s great news for you. It’s a go-anywhere, do-it-all watch that also features handy extras like Crucially, that rugged-meets-refined approach means you can wear the Luminox Atacama Field Automatic 1900 Watch with all the casual gear you typically reach for on a weekend, from perfectly faded jeans and a classic crewneck sweater to durable hiking boots and a waxed trucker jacket (as seen in this post on fall style essentials).

This watch is surprisingly refined, yet casual. A winner in my book.

But here’s another thing about the Luminox Atacama Field Automatic 1900 Watch — it also wouldn’t look half-bad with the dressier fall gear in your arsenal. Take a tan herringbone blazer, navy chinos and a classic chambray shirt, add your best fall boots, then toss on the Luminox Atacama Field Automatic 1900 Watch to finish it all off.  Feel free it to go a step further and team the stunning Luminox Atacama Field Automatic 1900 Watch with a grey flannel suit, sleek leather Chelsea boots and a crisp denim dress shirt — see, that’s nearly the perfect high-low style combination. In terms of more functional matters, this handsome watch also delivers. It’s water-resistant to 200 meters, and it also features an always-on lume that glows without a battery or light source — how’s that for delivering on adventure-ready quality? To recap: The Luminox Atacama Field Automatic 1900 Watch is a brilliantly built watch that gives you the potential to wear it in ways more laidback or more refined — any day of the week.

Are you digging the Luminox Atacama Field Automatic 1900 Watch? How are you styling it?

The Friday Read: The Best Live Music Venues, Your New Favorite Fall Jeans and Anchor Brewing

Unbelievably excellent boots for fall and winter — just what the doctor ordered.

First things first: Those boots right there are the Rhodes Dean Boots, and these Portuguese-built boots might be some of the best fall boots your money can buy. They’re simply perfect for the season, and I’m highlighting ’em with good reason today — trust me, you’d do well to shop these essential men’s boots. Now, on to business. We’ve made it to Friday — the final Friday in October, no less! I’ve spent this week taking in the changing seasons in New York City, and after a very busy and hectic couple of weeks, I couldn’t be happier to have some time off, some rest and some tasty coffee & craft beer on tap in Brooklyn these next few days. Have you been keeping up with the blog? If not, I’d urge you to get on board with the men’s style essentials you need for the season, plus the best leather jacket to buy now (as covered in last week’s Friday Read!). We’ve also told you all about how to wear sneakers this fall — complementing classic, retro-inspired footwear is easy when you’ve got rugged shirting and easygoing accessories, in short. It’s not all about menswear on the blog, though. Earlier this week, I had the very cool chance to check out a VIP media dinner (yes, I’m very important!) at John Doe Craft Bar & Kitchen with the excellent West Coast-based beer purveyors at Anchor Brewing! Led by Brewmaster Scott Ungermann, one of the highlights was assuredly a chance to try the brewery’s famed, 44th Annual Christmas Ale — a true and delicious rarity, it was simply incredible. Be on the lookout for it starting November 1st! So, with all of that in the books, I’m very much looking forward to the weekend. Start yours the right way below, my friends. Thanks for reading!

  • Let’s kick this thing off with rugged fall menswear aplenty — namely, I rounded up my top fall style picks from Filson for The Manual. From hard-wearing bags to layering-ready shirting, this Pacific Northwest brand consistently delivers.
  • As a huge fan of live music — and a fan of hitting the road to see some excellent live music — I loved reading this Consequence of Sound piece on the best music venues in 10 American cities. What’s your favorite venue in your city? Any places you’re dying to check out?
  • We’re flashing it back here on the blog to this post on a true fall style essential — your favorite fall jeans from Flint and Tinder (that’d be the Flint and Tinder Stonewashed Jeans, as an FYI).  Pick up a pair, throw ’em on and style them with a rugged flannel shirt and tough brown leather boots.
  • I mentioned this earlier, but it’s been a heck of a busy and beer-filled week, thanks in particular to the evening I spent on Wednesday with Anchor Brewing — on that note, it was my pleasure to cover the Anchor Brewing Fog Breaker IPA for GearMoose, a seasonally friendly beer that’s here just in time for the weekend.

Alright, so that’s our Friday Read for you. Feel like following along with my weekend escapdes? Be sure we’re connected on Instagram. Need something else to keep you busy. Read more about the fall corduroy pants to buy now. Or, check out my guide on how to wear a denim shirt for fall and winter. OK, that’s all I’ve got for now.

Enjoy your weekend!

Autodromo Stradale Watch — $875

A striking dress watch that’s different from anything in your collection.

Although I’m one to reach for a more rugged timepiece, the sleek, slim and dressy Autodromo Stradale might just be one of the more unique men’s dress watches out there. Won’t you agree?

30 Watt Sudski Shower Beer Holder — $15

A handy essential that you didn’t know you needed — most likely, right?

Alright, so this last one’s just for fun. How neat is it that someone came up for a crucial invention covering that all-important shower beer? Pretty neat.

The Friday Read: Fall Style Essentials from Huckberry, The Best Men’s Sweatpants and Kurt Vile

You see that handsome jacket — or rather, those jackets — at the top of the page? That would be the incredible, truly stunning Taylor Stitch Moto Jacket — the new iteration on the right, the classic style on the left — part of the brand’s excellent Moto Collection. This release is a consistent favorite from perhaps my favorite menswear brand, and I’d urge you to shop it right now from my good pals at Taylor Stitch. Seriously, right now. At any rate, that’s as great of a way to kick of the weekend as any, wouldn’t you agree? I’m personally excited to catch my breath a bit — between three days of events this week at my day job (handling menswear PR for Timberland!), plus a busy, music-filled weekend at Austin City Limits Festival, I could use a break! On that note, I can’t recommend Austin enough — the coffee was strong and delicious (hit up The Spokesman if you can!), the beer was terrific and stunning sets by legends like Sir Paul McCartney (and my heroes The National!) at ACL made it all worth it. Other weekend highlights? A powerful, dance-filled set from CHVRCHES to close out Saturday, a fun afternoon of rock with The Wombats and a ripping Sunday night set from English rockers Arctic Monkeys. I also loved a powerful Friday afternoon set by Canadian rockers Arkells.  Of course, Austin is excellent in matters of menswear as well — STAG Provisions continues to lead the way there. Some other Austin highlights? The cozy, simply terrific Figure8 Coffee Purveyors — a neatly appointed shop in a quiet neighborhood serving delicious (and strong!) craft coffee.

What do you love in Austin? What should be on my radar for the next trip? Feel free to check in with me on Twitter! And in the meantime, let’s start the weekend right with today’s Friday Read.

  • I truly can’t get enough of the stylish menswear being produced and sold over at Huckberry — don’t you agree? With that in mind, I rounded up my favorite fall style essentials from Huckberry for GearMoose. What’s on your list this season?
  • OK, so it’s nearly the weekend. In the way of staying cozy and comfortable for fall, you’d well to check out my picks for the best men’s sweatpants over at The Manual.
  • I’m resharing this post once again, because as we get into colder weather, the timing just seems right. The Proof Strong Shirt is assuredly one of the best men’s chambray shirts out there, blending functionality and rugged style with versatility. Wear it as much as you can this fall and winter.
  • Alright, so y’all know I love me some great guitar rock. Kurt Vile fits that mold quite nicely, which is why I appreciate this excellent Steve Hyden profile of Kurt Vile’s latest album, “Bottle It In” — read on and rock out.

That’s closing out today’s post — thanks for reading!

Feel free to let me know your thoughts on The Style Guide Facebook page — cheers!

#OOTD: The Best Way to Wear Sneakers This Fall (And Beyond)

So, how do you build your outfits? Do you start from the ground up or the top down? If you’re the kind of guy who likes to work with men’s style essentials to build an outfit around, say, stylish retro sneakers, then today’s #OOTD is just the one you need. We’ve talked about how to wear high-top sneakers, and we’ve talked about how to dress for a casual fall weekend, and this ensemble merges those two themes quite nicely.  It all starts with the Reproduction of Found German Army Trainers, as authentic and cool a pair of sneakers as you’re apt to find out there.  They lend a distinguished, eye-catching vibe to this outfit, which features all the building blocks you need for weekend brunch, a day of shopping or a stroll through your favorite park — potentially blended into one heck of a day, right? We’re also going with the perfect pair of jeans, plus a rugged shirt jacket, to complement these distinctive sneakers. This outfit is full of seriously cool positives, one of ’em being that you can wear this look … just about anywhere this fall. It’s cool, it’s rugged, it’s laidback, and it gives you plenty of comfort and style, all at once. Again, even if you’re not a sneakerhead, it still pays off to have a stylish pair of sneakers in your fall and winter wardrobe, and the Reproduction of Found German Army Trainers fit the bill. So, what do ya say? I say we dive into this #OOTD, packed with fall style essentials. Thanks for reading!

Start with classic, cool sneakers, then go from there.

  • The Classic Sneakers: Reproduction of Found German Military Trainers, $230 — Based on an authentic silhoeutte, these cool, stylish retro sneakers are a change-up from more traditional fall footwear — and that’s a good thing.
  • The Shirt Jacket: Life/After/Denim Mount Royal Shirt Jacket in Black, $188 — Think of this rugged shirt jacket as the versatile outer layer you didn’t know you needed. Feel free to layer it up over a classic chambray shirt if you wish.
  • The Stylish Tee: Jungmaven Hemp Pocket Tee, $39.98 — This casual T-shirt is easy to layer and well-made, plus it’s got a rich, fall-friendly color.  A slight upgrade from your regular T-shirts, to  say the least.
  • The Denim: Flint and Tinder Stonewashed Jeans, $128 — Hard to argue with a pair of perfectly faded, made-in-America jeans that vibe nicely with this casual ensemble, right?
  • The Belt: Levi’s Contrast Stitch Belt, $38 — You already know that Levi’s makes a great pair of jeans — but how about a stylish leather belt?
  • The Everyday Carry: Filson Ballistic Nylon Dryden Briefcase, $175 — Packing up to head to a coffee shop and get some work done? Cruising into the office? Grab the Filson Dryden Briefcase.
  • The Socks: Anonymousism Wigwam Jacquard Crew Socks in Brown, $20.50 — Never underestimate the power of having a stylish pair of socks to finish off your wardrobe. Just enough cool pattern and color here.
  • The Beanie Cap: Levi’s Turn Up Beanie, $29.50 — If the temperature dips — which it’s bound to do — throw on this stylis beanie cap from the makers of your favorite pair of classic denim.
  • The Watch: Hemel HFT20 Watch, $450 — Bold, rugged and durable, the Hemel HFT20 Watch is made for weekend adventures aplenty.
  • The Everyday Carry: Filson Ballistic Nylon Dryden Briefcase, $175 — Packing up to head to a coffee shop and get some work done? Cruising into the office? Grab the Filson Dryden Briefcase.

OK, so all the building blocks for prime casual fall style are in place, right? From a rugged shirt jacket to the laidback, easygoing and comfortable Jungmaven pocket tee, these pieces are simply going to look great, whether worn to your favorite sports bar or to a relaxed weekend coffee date … or somewhere in between. And where does it all start? With the excellent Reproduction of Found German Army Trainers, of course. These sneakers exude retro cool and slightly rugged fall style thanks to the contrasting sole, and they’ll sit quite nicely underneath the Flint and Tinder Stonewashed Jeans. Don’t be afraid to shelve your slim dark denim in favor of something more broken-in, particularly when it comes to wearing sneakers like the terrific Reproduction of Found German Army Trainers. On the accessories front, I’m always an advocate for putting on a stylish leather belt and a rugged leather watch — two small, oft-overlooked accessories that really do make a big difference when it comes to separating yourself from the pack. Should it get chilly, you’re also nicely covered with the Levi’s Turn Up Beanie, which plays nicely in terms of color with the handsome, subtly stylish Anonymousism socks. When it comes to your everyday carry, the Filson Dryden Briefcase is going to put in a ton of work, to say the least. To me, this all the gear you need for a great day around town — where would you wear it? Let me know on Twitter!

See Now, Buy Now: The Vetra Chore Coat is A Perfectly Rugged Fall Layer

Vetra Chore Coat

Just the right combination of looks, rugged functionality and seasonal style.

One look at the Vetra Chore Coat tells you all you need to know, in my mind. That is to say, it’s a rugged, tough jacket that’s made for fall and winter layering. And it’s certainly among a host of fall style essentials you need in your wardrobe (and on your person) this season. Is it the perfect fall jacket? Well, that’s high praise … but when it comes to casual, versatile, then … yep, the Vetra Chore Coat just might fit the bill. Available as ever via our pals at Huckberry, it’s the sort of rugged fall jacket that embodies what the site stands for, in every possible way. Again, that’s high praise, but the Vetra Chore Coat blends functionality with an easy-to-layer silhouette and timeless style. Crafted from a heavy-duty, plain-weave cotton canvas in a highly versatile shade of Navy (although the same design is available in two different fabrics and colors), the made-in-France Vetra Chore Coat is the type of grab-and-go jacket that should assuredly be the centerpiece of your next fall weekend #OOTD.

SHOP: The Vetra Chore Coat via Huckberry

Yes indeed, the Vetra Chore Coat is one-of-a-kind, done up in the type of classic workwear style that would sit very well with a rugged long-sleeve henley and tough chore pants. Two oversized front pockets and one chest pocket provide room for your everyday carry essentials, while the five front buttons certainly aren’t in any danger of falling off — this jacket is tough and sturdy as heck. That means it’ll layer up quite nicely with a classic crewneck sweater and tan chinos for a bit of high-low, essential weekend style. It’s also a neat way to switch things up from your typical blazer — yes, that’s right … I’m recommending you wear the Vetra Chore Coat over a slim Oxford shirt and a knit tie at the office. Is that entirely unique combo? Yessir. Is it going to look great? Absolutely. Try it out and see for yourself.

Rugged leather boots are an essential for taking on fall and winter weather, and if you’re going to splurge, you might as well splurge on a pair that’s going to give you plenty in matters of both style and functionality — the Quoddy Bowhunter Boots shape up quite nicely.

Handmade in Maine with a seriously cool and rugged Grizzly Peanut leather, the Quoddy Bowhunter Boots are made with antique brass eyelets for durability — lace ’em up as often as you please. That handsome leather is going to break in very nicely, giving you a pair of stylish men’s boots that’ll team up easily alongside perfectly faded jeans and a classic henley. They’ve also got that throwback, heritage-inspired look that lends itself to actually being worn in  the field, be it on a weekend camping trip or a long weekend upstate. And you’re simply not going to find many other boots that feature a hand-stained leather midsole or a deerskin bellows tongue (designed to keep out water and debris). Yes indeed, the Quoddy Bowhunter Boots are the height of craftsmanship, quality and classic style. They’re going to work particularly well with chore pants and a waxed trucker jacket on a chilly fall or winter morning — no need to worry about durability or longevity when it comes to the Quoddy Bowhunter Boots, my friends. And if you fancy taking them for a spin at your office? They’ll wear handsomely with olive chinos and a classic garment-dyed Oxford.  A pair of stylish men’s boots that can do it all sounds like a must-have to me this season.
