The Friday Read: The Best New Leather Boots, Brooklyn Craft Beer & A Stylish New Blazer

Get ready for fall with these transitional leather boots from Yogi (as sold by Huckberry, of course).

Much as in the photo above, we’re sitting on the verge of the weekend — and sitting on the verge of fall in a few weeks (post-Labor Day, that is). And all of this is to say, it’s never too early to start thinking about buying a pair of the best leather boots for the season. In fact, those ones above come from Yogi, a unique brand making high-quality boots that won’t quit — no matter where you go this weekend. For me, this weekend represents a much-needed chance to kick back and relax in Brooklyn, something that’s been sporadic at times between trips to Madrid, Chicago & London this summer! Make no mistake though, I’d do it all again — to say the very least! As for my plans this weekend, I plan on checking out Five Boroughs Brewing, a Brooklyn-based brewery that’s been on my “to-do” list for quite some time! I’ll also be getting a much-needed iced coffee at another of my favorite Brooklyn spots, the quaint Milk and Honey. What about you? I’m a huge fan of the Brooklyn craft beer and coffee scenes, so if you happen to be in NYC and need suggestions, let me know on Twitter! And to start the weekend right, we’ve got the below Friday tips & tricks ready to go in the meantime.

  • We’ve talked previously about a stylish new blazer for these last few weeks of summer — if that happened to pique your interest, you’re in luck. You can check out more on the Grayers Dylan Blazer via this very Web site. And the even better news? It’s easily wearable with dark denim and a classic Oxford shirt through September — trust me on that.
  • Speaking of classic style, there’s really no way to go wrong when it comes to the best new sneakers for men — especially a pair of vintage-inspired Nike kicks. I’m talking, of course, about the Nike Cortez ’72 S.D., a set of sleek, streamlined sneakers that should be enough to amp up casual outfits (like light wash jeans and a short-sleeve henley) as easily as slightly more formal looks (like tan chinos and a classic chambray shirt). You can get the full scoop via my latest for GearMoose.
  • Last but certainly not least today, let’s dig into the music world a bit, shall we? Once I find a feature I love, I like to go back and peruse it from time to time. That’s been the case lately with this GQ feature on The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas, a one-time (and forever) rock legend who’s branched out in recent years with his band the Voidz, a decidedly more experimental outfit. The piece is a few years old (2014!), but it’s a fascinating read to start off your weekend right — cold beer in hand, preferably.

OK, that’s going to close the books on today’s Friday Read. If you need one last item to get you going before the weekend, then I’d point you toward my favorite men’s style and gear picks for August. All good? All good!

The Friday Read: The Rooftop at Pier 17, The Best Men’s Sunglasses & the Todd Snyder Land Cruiser

One of the best views in the city for drinks? You bet. Image courtesy of R17.

While we normally start The Friday Read by recommending a men’s style essential to buy in advance of the weekend, we’re going to go a different route today — I’m going to point you toward one of the best new restaurants in New York City, a proper dining experience I recently found delightful. That is to say, the Rooftop at Pier 17, also known as R17, is the place to be this summer. As it were, Pier 17 is also one of the best venues for music in the city, with past acts running the gamut from Passion Pit to Kings of Leon (both of which are right up my alley).

R17 was kind enough to seat myself and my great friend + fellow media industry pro Kyle Campbell on a recent evening, and I can’t say enough about the wall-to-wall experience at R17. It’s absolutely one of the best rooftops for drinks in the Big Apple, and I don’t say that lightly — it’s rare I get the chance to escape to a rooftop, let alone on a weeknight, for some lovely bites and cocktails. Get the English Muffin Burger, but not before you’ve started things off with some Crispy Potatoes. Wash it down with a Kentucky Cooler, a delightfully delicious bourbon-rouge vermouth-campari concoction that was surprisingly perfect for summer — especially on a hot night. If you happen to be in NYC this weekend or in the months ahead, squeeze in some time to visit the Rooftop at Pier 17 — no regrets to be found anywhere (and a heck of a view to go along with it!). Now onto the rest of today’s Friday Read. Start your weekend the right way here, will you?

The right accessories can make all the difference when it comes to your #OOTD — that’s why I’m re-upping my post on the best men’s sunglasses (and you should check out my own post on this blog covering another pair of must-have sunglasses). Any one of those pairs could be the perfect way to soak up some rays.

  • Let’s keep talking about the best men’s gear, shall we? On that note, I also covered the best messenger bags for men over at The Manual, featuring tried-and-true, favorite brands like WP Standard (as seen on my Instagram) and a few others I’m sure you’ll recognize. Time to gear up!
  • Lastly, let’s have a little fun before we start the weekend. You surely know Todd Snyder, my favorite American menswear designer — and assuredly, a favorite of yours, as well. But did you know that Mr. Snyder recently put his stamp on a custom-made, investment-level car? Yes indeed, the Todd Snyder FJ43 Land Cruiser is iconic and one-of-a-kind. Head to GearMoose to get the full scoop via my latest feature for that site.

One last time before we head out of here for a few days: I’d implore you to check out my favorite menswear picks for the rest of summer, featuring an indigo Western shirt, classic men’s chinos and plenty more wearable picks for any day of the week. OK, that’s all for now — cheers!

The Friday Read: The Strokes, Lollapalooza & the Best Everyday Carry Gear

An undeniable pair of rugged leather Chelsea boots for a summer weekend — and a music festival?

For me, there are certain men’s style essentials that are actually, well, festival style essentials — like a rugged pair of leather boots. In fact, the Red Wing Heritage Weekender Chelsea Boots are as ready for a weekend in a favorite city as they are for the festival itself. And with all this talk of music festivals, it’s only fitting that I’ll be in Chicago this weekend for the one and only Lollapalooza, one of my favorite festivals on the planet. I previously visited Lollapalooza 2017 to see luminous rock bands like The Killers, and last night’s kickoff headlining set by NYC rock legends The Strokes at Lollapalooza 2019 was also as good as it gets — truly legendary. It’s the second time I’ve seen them play this summer in fact, seeing as I headed to London in May for the excellent All Points East Festival and another legendary weekend abroad. What does the rest of this weekend hold?

Well, another trip today to Lollapalooza to see Tame Impala, plus the extraordinary Maggie Rogers and iconic acts like Death Cab for Cutie — to say I’m looking forward to it would be an understatement! I also hope to check out the quickly growing Chicago craft beer scene, including a personal favorite, Half Acre Beer Company. To keep up with all the fun, check out my page on Instagram. As you start your own weekend, I’d also point you toward today’s Friday Read below, and tomorrow’s Style Pick of the Week. Happy style shopping!

  • I often say that the small details are the most underrated and oft-overlooked — correct? Correct. And when it comes to the best everyday carry gear, there are certain brands you can absolutely count on — like The James Brand, and specifically, The James Brand Holcombe Carabiner as I covered for GearMoose. Particularly if you’re heading to a music festival, you’ll never misplace your keys again.
  • Speaking of dressing for a music festival, well, I’m going to point your toward my guide on how to wear a short-sleeve shirt for summer. Especially as the thermostat climbs and the music ramps up, this #OOTD is going to be the way to go.
  • Because this weekend is all about music, and because The Strokes were one heck of a way to kick off Lollapalooza, well, you’d do well to explore “Is This It” by The Strokes in just five minutes via Pitchfork. Turn it up while you’re at it, will you?

OK, we’ve got one last item to wrap up the week and head into the weekend. Namely, I’m going to point you in the right direction when it comes to the best new men’s style essentials — check out this recent edition of The List to get outfitted for the days to come.

The Friday Read: Nothing New Sneakers, the Best New Headphones & Lems Mesa Shoes

Dependable outdoor shoes to wear the rest of the summer — and this coming weekend, if you can swing it.

You see those rugged outdoor shoes at the top of the page? Well, they happen to be from Lems Shoes, and we’re going to be telling you more today about how these tough hiking shoes can unlock some excellent summer outdoor adventures. In the meantime, that’s what today’s Friday Read is all about — summer gear for summer adventures. I’m all about making the most of my time in Brooklyn, seeing as I’ve been fortunate enough to travel everywhere from London to Madrid in pursuit of great rock music, craft beer & coffee this year. Every time I get the chance to get away from NYC, I always appreciate it that much more when I come back. And that being said, it seems there are continual opportunities to explore and enjoy this amazing city around every corner, from delicious craft beer to stellar live music.

In fact, I took the chance on Thursday to see acclaimed indie folk guitarist Matthew Houck (AKA Phosphorescent!) play an intimate outdoor show at 99 Scott Avenue, a suitably fitting and fun space for a lovely Brooklyn evening. This is music that reminds me of years ago in college, and more specifically, about summers spent in my college town — to have that experience in Brooklyn now was pretty special, to say the least. So this weekend, I’ll be resting & relaxing, looking back on that show, working on this blog & likely enjoying a pint at the new Transmitter Brewing in Industry City. What about you? Let me know over on Twitter, and enjoy the best new menswear below in the meantime!

  • Keeping tabs on the pulse of the menswear world isn’t as easy as copping the latest sneaker drops — at least, that’s what I think. And if you agree with me, you’d do well to check out my latest for The Manual, covering the recent launch of sustainable and eco-friendly Nothing New sneakers — if it’s a summer-friendly pair you happen to be searching for, this is a brand that’s got ’em (on a related note, check out another recommendation of mine on the stylish sneakers to wear to the office).
  • Speaking of stylish sneakers, let’s head over to GearMoose — namely, I covered the rugged, travel-ready, go-anywhere Lems Mesa Shoes, an ultra-flexible pair of tough shoes to wear on summer hikes (with camp shorts and a rugged henley), or to your favorite brewery (with classic chore pants and a thermal shirt come fall).
  • Let’s keep things going over at GearMoose, shall we? Namely, we’ve got quite the look at the best new headphones to upgrade your listening experience. As a big music fan and something of an audiophile, you can’t go wrong when you amp up (literally) your listening experience with the V-Moda Crossfade Headphones — that’s a guarantee.

OK, that’s going to tie things up with a bow for today’s edition of The Friday Read. If you’d still like to keep on catching up with the best style essentials for summer, I’ll point you toward the best new men’s chinos to throw on for the weekend (or the work week). Aside from that, you’d also do well to check out my guide on how to wear an Oxford shirt for summer. OK, that’s all I’ve got — happy shopping!

The Friday Read: The Best Men’s Sunglasses, A Summer Windbreaker & The Best Polo Shirts

Let’s start things off simply today, shall we? As I look back on this past week, I’m both exhausted and also exceptionally grateful — Monday night, I returned from a relatively quick trip to Madrid over a long weekend to check out the Mad Cool Festival and see my favorite band & my heroes, The National. For this being a style blog, they sure do seem to come up quite often, right? But at any rate, I can’t say enough about Madrid (or about the powerful, propulsive, lifechanging music of The National!). Madrid is a city that I’d never dreamed of visiting until recently, but in my mind, following my passion for music is always one of the better reasons to get on a plane and explore (to say the least!). I won’t soon forget the sunlit, cobblestone streets of Madrid, plus prime craft beer spots like Fogg Bar, to go along with the rush of energy I felt arriving at Mad Cool Festival & enjoying a day of stellar live music from the likes of Sharon Van Etten and more. If you get the chance to go, it’s a must! Now, onto the rest of today’s Friday Read.

As it were, I’m excited to have some downtime in Brooklyn, which I’ll spend working on my Instagram (give me a follow!) and taking care of some writing for The Manual. I’ve also got my eye on writing up more content for this here blog, helped along my delicious coffee from Ditmas Park’s own Milk & Honey. With that being said, what are you up to this weekend? Let me know on Twitter, and let’s dig into the rest of the Friday Read. Cheers!

  • If you’re still searching for that perfect pair of summer sunglasses, allow me to direct you toward my own roundup over at The Manual (naturally!) of the best men’s sunglasses for summer. There’s something for everyone at every price point and style type, naturally. And you can also check out my post for this blog on the best sunglasses to buy now, if you happen to be in search of an additional option.
  • Let’s keep things rolling with the best gear for summer, shall we? In this case, I’m going to pass you off to GearMoose, where I wrote about the best polo shirts for men, with a focus on breezy fabric, easygoing style & plenty of functionality in the heat. These ones can’t be beat, in my mind.
  • On the style front, we’ve got even more great men’s gear headed your way — especially if you’re prepping to head out of town on a camping trip or gearing up for an evening bonfire. In that case, the Wellen Wind Shell (as covered in our Style Pick of the Week series) is absolutely the outer layer you need, designed to protect from the elements (be it a windy night or too many mosquitoes).

That’s going to do it for my menswear quick hits this week — if you’d like one last item to read as you close out your work week and head toward happy hour, be sure to check out my roundup of the best new men’s gear to buy for summer. That should sort things out nicely for the weekend. As always, thanks for reading!

The Friday Read: Madrid, Mad Cool Festival & What to Wear to a Summer Wedding

The breezy, old-school-cool shirt to wear this weekend.

If I had to put money on it, I’d say the Katin Vinson Shirt is the perfect summer shirt for this coming weekend — and any weekend, for that matter. Is it on your list of must-buy men’s style essentials? No? Well, it should be. Speaking of summer style, we’ve got a healthy dose of tips and tricks (plus craft beer) in today’s Friday Read — promise. And on that note, I’ve got one of the bigger summer weekends ahead of me — in fact, as you read this, I’m in none other than … Madrid! Yes, as crazy as it is, it’s true. But this isn’t just any old weekend jaunt — I’m here to attend none other than Mad Cool Festival, an undeniably hip music festival in its second year … headlined by THE NATIONAL tonight, no less!

This festival was announced late last year, and without knowing they’d soon release one of my favorite albums (and a lengthy tour!), I  knew I had to jump on this lifetime opportunity. The shows I’ve seen so far on the “I Am Easy To Find Tour,” including in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and at Bonnnaroo in Tennesse, truly have been otherworldly, and I feel very, VERY grateful to be along for the ride in a small way. Other highlights of today’s festival include luminous NYC rocker Sharon Van Etten (opening directly for The National!) and Australia’s own Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever (who were behind a sneaky good 2018 album, “Hope Downs”); talk about a heck of a lineup. I really can’t wait to check out the festival and the city — to say the LEAST.

It’s my first-ever trip to Spain, and for someone who only took two years of high school Spanish, that’s a bit intimidating! All the same, I plan to explore plenty on foot, including crucial stops at Fogg Bar (renowned for craft beer and cheese), plus Fabrica Maravillas, Madrid’s first microbrewery. It won’t be all craft beer, though — I plan to explore as much as possible, including stops at El Retiro Park and Plaza Mayor. To follow along with all of the fun, be sure to head to my Instagram. In the meantime, have a great weekend — we’ll see you back here for tomorrow’s Style Pick of the Week!

  • Heading to a summer wedding this weekend? Looking for some summer wedding outfit inspiration? Look no further than my guide on what to wear to a summer wedding — it’ll (hopefully) keep you calm, cool & collected … oh, and ready for the reception later.
  • Over at The Manual, I try to stay pretty busy — on that front, I rounded up the best lightweight shirts for men (both of the casual and more dressy varieties, of course); you’d do well to check out my picks from brands like Bonobos, Rhone & plenty more.
  • OK, so the Fourth of July might have been last weekend, but it’s never too late to get some of the best new summer gear — regardless of whether it’s a holiday or not. Shop my favorite seasonal picks ASAP.
  • With all this talk of lightweight summer style, it might seem counterintuitive to crack into a tasty, rich double IPA — and yet, I rounded  up the best double IPAs over at GearMoose, including a new favorite from my home state (that’d be the Bell’s Double Two Hearted, of course). With that, I raise my glass to you!

Before I head out for the weekend, allow me to direct you toward my Instagram, where you can follow along with up-to-the-minute updates on my travels, my personal style & my beer inclinations (truly!). Oh, and if you fancy one more piece of reading before the weekend starts? Take a look at my full guide on how to wear classic chinos in a way that’s laidback, breezy & ready for anything. OK, that’s all from me! Cheers!

The Friday Read: Fourth of July Weekend, The Converse Star Series & Outerknown Shirting

Just one way to hit the ride for the Fourth of July weekend.

OK, my friends — we’re rolling into the Fourth of July weekend, just like the Montague Bikes Navigator at the top of the page. Hopefully, you kicked off the weekend with men’s style essentials yesterday, helped along by some rest, some relaxation, a delicious craft beer and a hot dog or two. That’s how I spent it in Brooklyn at Coney Island and Nathan’s Famous, enjoying the sights and sounds of a classic American destination. But now, we’ve got a double-whammy of sorts: A proper holiday weekend on tap. And if you’re the kind of person who loves to stay active on vacation, the above Montague Bikes Navigator is just the way to go about doing that. Now, I don’t have a bike myself (hello, subway!), but if I did, and wanted to bike around to breweries in Queens and beyond, I’d get one of the best foldable bikes out there. I myself am going to be sure to take in a relaxing, rejuvenating weekend in my favorite city in the world, helped along by a visit to Brooklyn’s own The Adirondack, plus some of my favorite summer style essentials, naturally. To start your own weekend the right way, you know exactly where to go — the below Friday Read, of course!

  • Now admittedly, if you’re a sneakerhead, you’ve probably known about the Converse Star Series for some time now. It’s a hot-selling new release packed with some of the best men’s sneakers I’ve seen in terms of functionality and forward-thinking fashion, and I covered it a couple weeks back for The Manual — if you’re interested in snagging a pair, head to places like StockX for the full scoop!
  • I talk often about how to make classic men’s style essentials work for you — pieces like the best men’s chinos, at that. For a laidback Fourth of July weekend, throw on a stylish short-sleeve shirt, slim chinos & suede loafers, then belly up to the bar with this #OOTD. Cheers!
  • Speaking of what to wear for Fourth of July weekend, you could do worse than a sustainable, classic short-sleeve shirt from Outerknown — as covered by yours truly over at GearMoose, in fact. Best get to it while there’s still time! The Best Basics. Summer Ready.

Let’s close out this post before you get to the Fourth of July weekend with one more handy piece of advice — you should be wearing a short-sleeve henley this weekend. In fact, you should be checking out my guide on how to wear a short-sleeve henley before you do anything (craft beer not included). OK, that’s everything I’ve got for y’all today — have a great weekend!

The Friday Read: The Best Men’s Grooming Essentials, New Belgium Craft Beer, and the Best Men’s Shorts for Summer

The best T-shirt for a summer weekend? Sure is!

Just one look at the above Friday Read tells you all you need to know — we’ve got a packed rundown today, starting off with the best new T-shirt to buy for summer. We’re talking, of course, about the Flint and Tinder Heavyweight Triblend Tee as seen above. It’s geared to  be worn with everything from chino shorts to slim light wash denim — but you’re not here for that, right? No, sir. Let’s close out the week in style (or at least, we’ll close up shop until tomorrow’s Style Pick of the Week).

After a couple very busy weekends in a row seeing my favorite band, The National — including a trip down South to the amazing Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival & a jaunt to Montreal — I’ll be spending this weekend in Brooklyn. As to Montreal, I can’t recommend the city’s mix of culinary delights (a la amazing meats at Maison Publique) and surprisingly delicious craft beer (the mix of French and Belgian influences at places like Isle De Garde was very neat to experience) enough. Throw in a killer show by The National playing old and new classics at Place des Arts, and you’ve got the recipe for a banner weekend. Oh, and for poutine and classic “greasy spoon” dishes, head to the Montreal Pool Room. Coffee and bagels? Fairmount Bagels has you covered. Can you tell I’m a big fan??

How about your plans for this weekend? I’m looking forward to catching up on the coffee scene at my favorite Brooklyn coffee shop, Milk & Honey, and I’m also looking forward to catching up on the craft beer scene at another favorite Brooklyn haunt, the always excellent Sycamore Bar & Flower Shop. As ever, you can check out how I’m dressing for a stylish summer weekend over at my Instagram. In the meantime, let’s get on with today’s Friday Read. Thanks for spending some of your weekend here!

  • There’s one essential men’s grooming brand — among many, naturally — that should be on your radar this season. That brand is the aptly named Beau Brummel for Men, purveyors of everything from an effective charcoal face mask to an excellent daily moisturizer. Give my latest for The Manual a quick read to get up to speed!
  • We’re going to pivot here briefly back to one of my other passions — that’d be craft beer, and specifically, some of the best beer for summer. Namely, I’ll point you toward GearMoose to read all about New Belgium’s Passion Fruit Kolsch, one heck of a light, essential beer for the warmer months.
  • And in the spirit of summer style — and summer style essentials — I’m going to close things up here by pointing you back toward some of the best shorts for summer. Make no mistake, this is ever more critical with the Fourth of July quickly approaching. Best start shopping now.

Still searching for one last critical purchase in advance of the weekend? Check out my guide to the best gear for summer — if you’re not already enamored with many of those gear picks, that is. OK, it’s time for me to sign off and head out to enjoy a summer weekend. To follow along with what I’m up to, check out my profile on Instagram. That’s all for now — cheers!

The Friday Read: Summer’s Best T-Shirts, Montreal & The Best Beer to Drink for Summer

Two options for the best summer polo for men, guaranteed.

Readers, do you see those two stylish polos above? Either could be the key to unlocking perfect weekend summer style — perfect style for the weekend we’ve got in front of us, in fact. I’ll be wearing something mighty similar to the Relwen Stripe Pique Slot Polo, and I’d recommend you do the same. What’s on your weekend agenda? For me, this lovely June weekend means it’s time for another music-centric road trip! If you follow me on Instagram or read the blog, you know I love — absolutely love — American indie rockers The National. They’re touring behind their new album and short film “I Am Easy To Find,” and with that tour comes the chance to visit another new city; this weekend, it’s Montreal! Have any suggestions on what I should do during my time in the city? I plan on checking out renowned spots like Joe Beef and Maison Publique for my fair share of amazing steak and cocktails, for starters. And of course, the Friday evening show at the beautiful-looking Place des Arts should also be phenomenal — I can’t recommend this new album enough, folks! That’s what I’ll be listening to as I head to Montreal. To start your own weekend off right, you know what to do: Check out the below Friday Read.

The Best Basics. Summer Ready.

  • Let’s stick with GearMoose for a second, shall we? If you’re searching for the best gear for a summer adventure, you’d do well to check out the Vivobarefoot x Finisterre Primus Trail Shoes, as I wrote about for one of my favorite style and gear sites. Happy exploring, folks.

The Friday Read: The Best New Chinos, George Dickel Whisky & Bonnaroo

The dependable and trail-ready shorts you need for a summer weekend.

If it’s a summer weekend — which it most definitely is — then you need a pair of functional, adventure-ready shorts. You need the Coalatree Trailhead Shorts, in fact; they’ll take you anywhere you need to go, from a music festival to a brewery and everywhere in between. Are you packing up these stylish shorts?

The Best Basics. Summer Ready.

For me, what I’m packing and wearing this weekend has perhaps never been more critical — I’m heading down South to the revered Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival for the first time ever! The occasion, of course, is none other than a Saturday night festival concert by my favorite band (yes, THE NATIONAL) as they play tracks from their new album “I Am Easy To Find,” plus old favorites. I’m seriously so thrilled and excited to be able to make this trip; although I was hesitant in years past to head to The ‘Roo (the camping element makes things difficult), the introduction of one-day passes means I’ll be able to spend some time exploring Nashville (as I did in a previous September 2017 trip) while also looking forward to some standout music from my favorite band — and plenty others, including indie rock luminaries Hippo Campus. To follow along with all the fun, join me on Instagram, or else check out my Twitter. And for now, let’s get your own weekend started the right way — with my Friday Read picks below — cheers!

  • For my friends at The Manual, I covered your new favorite chinos from Bonobos — they’re made from organic cotton, and in an agreeable & tailored fit. How can it get any better than that, right? Wear them with classic suede chukka boots and a slim navy polo any day of the week.
  • So, Father’s Day is getting shockingly close — and we likely all know what it’s like to have a dad or father figure who’s tricky to shop for (especially if he’s got a more off-the-beaten-path hobby like indulging in rare whiskey). On that note, I covered the excellent George Dickel Bottled-in-Bond Whisky for GearMoose — get ready to taste the best whiskey you didn’t know you needed, in short.
  • We mentioned above about the slim navy polo you need to wear with your new Bonobos chinos — well, my friends, one of the best men’s polos for summer can be found in my post about the new Wellen Hemp Polo. If you missed this post last week, read up accordingly now. Cheers!
