#OOTD: Here’s How You Should Dress for the Polar Vortex This Year

You’ll know it when you see it — the arrival of this year’s polar vortex. Inevitably, and especially if you live in a place like NYC, it’ll catch you at the worst possible time. So, how to dress for the polar vortex this year? Stylishly and with functionality in mind, of course. That’s where today’s #OOTD takes us, so put on your rugged Danner boots and get ready. We’re kicking things off with a tough winter parka, and it only gets better from there (good news, the parka comes from Flint and Tinder). From there, it’s pretty critical that you throw on a rugged sweater for warmth, along with an office-ready flannel shirt from the good folks at Faherty Brand. But, today’s #OOTD is wearable for the office, you say? Of course — there’s work to be done, even during the polar vortex. That’s why we’re also recommending a rugged, casual watch and some surprisingly tailored chore pants. The point is, again, you need to dress for anything and everything, and I think this rugged-yet-reliable #OOTD is the way to go. What say you? Find out the rest of today’s gear picks for yourself below — stay warm!

Winter really doesn’t stand a chance — bundle up accordingly.

  • The Jacket: Flint and Tinder Waxed Ridge Parka, $398 — The good folks at Flint and Tinder never fail to come through with amazing men’s style essentials, like this tough winter parka. Your new favorite winter jacket? Possibly.
  • The Rugged Sweater: Peregrine Waffle Crew Neck Jumper, $140 — You know those mornings when it’s too cold to go outside or do much of anything? This insanely warm winter sweater changes all that.
  • The Classic Shirt: Faherty Brand Brushed Apline Flannel Shirt, $148 — And the proper shirt to pair with that winter sweater? A classic flannel shirt from Faherty Brand, of course.
  • The Boots: Danner Raptor Boots, $240 — I really do love the boots churned out by Danner season after season — personally, the Raptor Boots have proven exceedinly comfortable, and pretty darn tough on top of that. Perfect for the polar vortex.
  • The Pants: Flint and Tinder Mill Pants, $98 — The polar vortex demands that you dress accordingly — hence, these tough chore pants to stomp through snow.
  • The Must-Have Weekender: Buffalo Jackson Dakota Weekender, $294.98 — Heading somewhere in spite of the snow? Just trying to haul your gear to your cabin or to your next job? This rugged weekender bag is perhaps the best new bag to buy now.
  • The Socks: Anonymousism MOC Pile Crew Socks, $22.50 — We talked about the boots to buy for this #OOTD, now let’s talk about the stylish socks you need on your feet. Anonymousism makes each pair with form and function in mind.
  • The Watch: Huckberry x Lum-Tec Combat B-42 Watch, $499 — Although you’re dealing with a blizzard, that’s no time to let your accessories slip. This rugged, casual watch is an excellent option for winter.
  • The Tough Leather Gloves: Give’r 4-Season Waxed Gloves, $114 — Again, your accessories need to stay on point and carry you through the storm in style — these are an essential pair of winter gloves, no questions asked.
  • The Everyday Carry Essential: Taylor Stitch Drop Point Knife, $68 — In the spirit of getting the job done, you might find this Taylor Stitch Drop Point Knife handy if you’re tackling chores or projects outside.

Now, the polar vortex might seem tricky in matters of both style and survival — but it’s all about outfitting yourself accordingly. In my mind, that starts with new favorite winter jacket from Flint and Tinder. I’d say it’s one of the best men’s winter jackets out there, and it only gets better when you layer it over a classic flannel shirt from Faherty Brand, along with that insanely warm winter sweater we discussed earlier. The rest of your gear is truly on-point, too. Take those tough chore pants and the Danner Raptor Boots — there’s nearly no stopping you now. But wait, there’s more! Throw in a rugged, casual watch, grab an essential pair of winter gloves, then top it off by packing up a rugged weekender bag for whatever the day throws your way. Lest we forget, the Taylor Stitch Drop Point Knife is a handy everyday carry essential, and stylish socks are always a must-have. Now all you need is a roaring fire and a glass of whiskey — right? Right. Good luck out there, stay warm & stay stylish!

With this laidback holiday in the books (are you wearing something like this casual ensemble?), it’s time to turn our attention toward a more refined, dressy night. New Year’s Eve presents a multitude of options — maybe you’re hitting the town for dinner and drinks … and then the club (gasp)? Maybe you happen to be hosting a refined get-together of your own. From casual drinks at home to an evening on the town, there’s no denying that pieces like a slim topcoat are going to prove essential (and warm!) no matter what. Top off your look with a casual wool blazer that just so happens to be polished and crisp — alongside a classic slim dress shirt, of course. It’s a look that’s going to win you compliments no matter where you go, and the same can be said of pairing it all with black selvage jeans that A) Wear like dress pants and B) Just so happen to be some of the best men’s black denim on the market. Your footwear is also critical, especially when roads and sidewalks can get icy and snowy. That, my friends, is where a pair of stylish brown leather boots come into play — especially a pair from Original Chippewa. And when the time comes to slip off your boots?

You needn’t worry about looking out of place, because stylish patterned socks from CHUP more than get the job done — again, it’s the little details that win you praise from family and friends, right? Style Pick of the Week: O.N.S. Clothing Dominic Bomber

A new classic — highly stylish and functional.

On the hunt for one of the best men’s jackets for winter? Search no more, because I’d wager I found it. And that jacket, my friends, would be the O.N.S Clothing Dominic Bomber, a rugged, durable & simply cool old-school jacket you can wear with nearly anything. It channels the type of throwback style born of much-needed functionality; it’s easy to see the O.N.S Clothing Dominic Bomber being worn on the deck of a ship or on the chilly coast during a rainstorm. That’s how the brand approaches designig its gear, and that’s great news for all of us who could use a wardrobe upgrade. Right? In my mind, the O.N.S Clothing Dominic Bomber is absolutely one of the the best men’s jackets your money can buy. Make no mistake, it’s an investment at $428, but your wardrobe will be all the better for it. Made from half-lambswool and half-nylon, it’s a classic cut that wears nicely with all manner of men’s style essentials, including slim tan chinos and a timeless chambray shirt. The faux shearling collar is also a badass style touch that’ll keep you warm no matter how chilly it gets, too. Can it get better? Actually, yes.

SHOP: The O.N.S Clothing Dominic Bomber

This coat really is the sort of style you just don’t see anymore, and that makes it all the better to wear with equally classic pieces like a rugged henley and your favorite pair of slim jeans. The quilted lining should also offer even more protection from the cold — make no mistake, the O.N.S Clothing Dominic Bomber has a lot going for it. The Dark Green color is also uniquely rich and distinctive, made to stand out stylishly in the grey depths of winter. It’s a sharp substitute for a blazer, and would wear nicely with a crisp Oxford shirt and slim wool trousers — just add handsome leather boots, and you’re set for the office holiday party or a tailored weekend happy hour.  How’s that for one of the best men’s jackets? Not bad at all, if you ask me. Again, it’s an investment at more than $400, but the O.N.S Clothing Dominic Bomber is going to give you returns in spades — to say the least. Again, it’s a jacket you can wear to channel more rugged style (think chore pants, a thermal shirt and the Huckberry Duck Boots) or a tailored look (a chambray dress shirt and a knit tie). Still not sold? Once you try this jacket, you will be.

#OOTD: How to Dress for a Casual Christmas This Year

Folks, it’s coming right up — we’re talking, of course, about Christmas. Perhaps you’ve made it through the holiday party gauntlet and are winding things down to enjoy the day at home … but I doubt it. No sir, this time of year calls for nothing but the best men’s style essentials, even if you’re simply relaxing with a small group of family or friends at home or on the road. And that’s where today’s #OOTD enters the fray. Just like dressing for a stylish winter weekend, even time off the clock calls for gear that’s warm, functional and … heck, just plain fun. So, that’s what we’re going with today. Whether you’re hosting a laidback dinner party, powering through a family game night or heading out for a Christmas round at your favorite brewery, this ensemble nods toward the season without forcing you to put on an ugly sweater. In fact, the stylish Faherty Brand cardigan pictured below is just the opposite. That’s also the case with the classic Faherty Brand flannel shirt that’s part of this look, too. The same can be said for the rest of our picks, right on down to the rugged leather boots and a slim leather wallet to help you get around with ease. Again, it’s all about staying polished and looking your best — Christmas is a special occasion, after all. To check out more holiday style suggestions, read our #OOTD series. Happy holidays!

Now, who’s ready for Christmas? I sure am — if you take the steps outlined in this #OOTD, I think you will be, too. Warm, comfortable and stylish layers will never steer you wrong, even if you’re only spending the evening at home with your significant other — that’s where Faherty Brand comes in. A rugged cotton cardigan is easy to layer over a classic flannel shirt, and that combo is tied together nicely with slim Flint and Tinder jeans featuring White Oak denim. Crisp blue denim is a reliable style option in any season, let alone the holidays — the same can be said for the stylish leather boots we’ve got on tap from Thursday Boots. They’ll provide both traction and style on slippery surfaces, and they’re complemented quite well by the refined nature of the Bond Peacoat from Billy Reid. On-point accessories are also a must, hence a stylish leather wallet and Anonymous Ism socks that’ll impress your guests. Staying warm shouldn’t fall by the wayside, either — an American Trench cashmere scarf provides both protection from the elements and a dash of refined style. And a collagen-boosting eye treatment is but a small way to add a little life to your grooming routine — no matter how much eggnog you have. How are you dressing for the holidays?
