The Friday Read: A Trek to Mexico With 1800 Tequila

1800 Tequila recipes.

As I often say, it was another momentous week in my neck of the woods — or rather, if you follow me on Instagram, my neck of the woods looked a bit different this week. That’s because, as part of my many freelance writing pursuits covering everything from menswear to music to spirits (like the new The Macallan x Bentley partnership), I trekked south to Mexico with 1800 Tequila on behalf of Maxim.com. Talk about the trip of a lifetime, indeed!

1800 Tequila margarita.

And there was certainly plenty in store. Our itinerary (myself and a handful of writer and influencer colleagues) included a visit to the town of Tequila itself, a special media tour of the famed tequila producer’s facilities, some truly excellent local and regional cuisine, and of course, stunning accommodations throughout. The reason for the trip — aside from trying nearly the full line of 1800 Tequila expressions — was the forthcoming debut of an exceptional new bottle of tequila.

It’s yet another reminder that I’m very fortunate to be in this business, pursuing my passions all the while — be it my passion for a stylish Todd Snyder shirt, a classic Huckberry waxed jacket or a fine, sipping-worthy pour of tequila.

In fact, we visited the namesake site and inspiration for the tequila itself, but those details will arrive next week, in good time, as I craft a story around this trip. In the meantime, you can certainly look for my daily bylines at sites like Maxim.com, as well as a full rotation of menswear stories here at your favorite neighborhood style blog. Thanks, as ever, for reading, for following along and for supporting my many freelance pursuits!

The Thursday Buy: Layer Up for Spring Rain with the Line of Trade Portland Rain Jacket

Line of Trade Portland Rain Jacket review.

I’ve said it plenty of times before when it comes to seasonal style, and especially the best spring style essentials – it pays off to be prepared in advance, or to be prepared right when you need it. In the case of one of the best spring rain jackets, well, the time is now, and the Line of Trade Portland Rain Jacket — from my friends at Bespoke Post — meets the mark perfectly in terms of that preparation.

Best men's spring rain jackets for 2024.

It joins other seasonal essentials from the Line of Trade offering at Bespoke Post (an in-house brand from the New York upstart, as you well know if you read the blog). And it’s not the first Line of Trade review we’ve covered here on the blog, but it’s certainly timely as spring showers roll into town. The lightweight polyester shell of the Line of Trade Portland Rain Jacket fights back against wind, rain and spring breezes, and the 5K breathable membrane will keep you cool in the process.

Plus, a duckbill storm hood with an elastic drawstring provides crucial coverage, and a storm flap conceals the performance zipper. All of the bells and whistles are certainly covered with the Line of Trade Portland Rain Jacket, which is precisely what you need in your next-level spring outerwear. See for yourself, and then get out there and get after it.

See Now, Buy Now: The Huckberry x Danner Mountain Moc Boots Are Perfect for Early Spring

Huckberry x Danner boots.

‘Tis the season to…lace ’em up some of the best new boots for men and get out there, is it not? That’s certainly the case in my neck of the woods, and in my experience, you know exactly where to go to give your footwear game a refresh. Of course, that would be Huckberry, a longtime favorite and a retailer that knows that gear gets the job done.

And fittingly enough, they’ve once again teamed up with Danner for a new Huckberry x Danner collaboration that might be the coolest yet between the heritage bootmaker and everyone’s favorite rugged, versatile gear retailer. You very well might remember the Huckberry x Danner Vertigo 917 Gold Rush Boots, which fused sporty appeal and sneakerboot style with a hiking boot silhouette, but the latest and greatest ups the ante even further.

Best moc toe boots for men.

The Huckberry x Danner 917 Mountain Moc Boots fuse the best of the past with the best of the present, and that’s an understatement. These boots draw inspiration from Danner’s 1960s moc toe boots, but they’re then brought forward into the 21st century with a durable, springy Vibram outsole and a GORE-TEX liner.

They also boast handsome accents of brown leather alongside suede, with three-eyelet moc toe construction for casually cool, rugged appeal — whether paired with stretch light wash jeans or olive chinos from Huckberry.

Those both translate to durability, comfort and plenty of cushioning, plus a stay-dry quality that spring demands when it comes to the best boots for men. It’s a hybrid style with the best qualities of a moc toe boot, as well as a sneakerboot, and that’s something your footwear wardrobe could surely use this spring. Remember, the Huckberry x Danner 917 Mountain Moc Boots are a limited-edition offering, and if they’re anything like past Huckberry x Danner collabs, they’re sure to sell out sooner rather than later.

The Tuesday Steal: Save Big At Aether Apparel’s End of Season Sale

Aether Apparel menswear review.

One thing leads to another, or in this case, one seasons bleeds into the next, calling for a wardrobe refresh — this time for some of the best spring style essentials on the market, of course. And as per usual, it seems that California-based Aether Apparel, with its blend of technical silhouettes, adventure-ready fabric and streamlined, city-minded designs, is one heck of a place to be as we end this season and cruise into another one.

Perhaps you shopped the Aether Apparel Archive Sale earlier this season, which delivered savings of up to 50 percent off, but the key with the Aether Apparel End of Season Sale? Even greater savings (try up to 60 percent off) on highly technical yet highly stylish gear for the modern man (and woman).

The offering covers everything you might need to fight spring rain (or one final snowstorm), from the Aether Apparel Mission Snow Shell (as seen above) to pieces like its Hybrid Tech Hoodie, a range of technical jackets and fleece layers, and sleek shirt jackets.

In short, these are the kind of pieces to get you from point A to point B without missing a beat, and all the while looking perfectly ready for whatever the season throws at you. Amp things up while saving big at the Aether Apparel End of Season Sale.

See Now, Buy Now: The Todd Snyder Lightweight Dylan Jacket is Perfect for Early Spring

This season, I say don’t leave anything to chance when it comes to your rotation of menswear essentials and especially, one of the best spring jackets for men. And when it comes down to it, Todd Snyder — famed American menswear designer — is about as iconic as it gets in terms of delivering spring style essentials with flair and utility.

That might mean something rugged yet surprisingly refined, like one of the best Western shirts on the market, or it could mean something equally useful for spring, like an updated version of the Todd Snyder Dylan Jacket. In my experience, whether it’s the Todd Snyder Dylan Leather Jacket or this lightweight edition, it’s a step up from the typical trucker jacket, in a way that only Snyder can produce.

This rugged (and again, yet refined) take on the trucker jacket is a personal favorite of mine, merging modern quality and elegance with the casually cool look of a classic silhouette. The latest iteration of the Todd Snyder Dylan Jacket uses a lightweight poly-cotton blend for stretch, comfort and easy layering on blustery and cooler spring days and nights.

And it doesn’t hurt that the Todd Snyder Dylan Jacket features a tailored silhouette, all the while coming in versatile Cream or Navy color options. It’s an almost dressier take on the trucker jacket, the kind that works as well with tan chinos as it does with light wash jeans and a T-shirt, and that’s never a bad thing to have handy, either.

In one (or both!) colors, the Todd Snyder Dylan Jacket is an elegant update to an iconic look, the kind that’s going to upgrade anything you wear it with — and anything you do, from a spring patio imbibing session to weekend coffee outings. Shop accordingly, and then get ready to meet your new favorite seasonal jacket: The Todd Snyder Dylan Jacket, of coursee

The Sunday Sale: Shop and Save Big on This Rugged Huckberry x Zodiac Dive Watch

We’re back in action here on The Style Guide, and spotlighting a stellar deal on one of the best watches for men, to boot. A rugged dive watch can be both a “beater watch” and an investment piece, and in the case of the Huckberry x Zodiac Titanium Dive Watch, it’s a bit of both.

Of course, it’s a Huckberry exclusive, and the great news is, you can get your new favorite dive watch for 15 percent off at checkout, no other bells and whistles required today.

The Huckberry x Zodiac Titanium Dive Watch carries on the Zodiac legacy of tough-as-nails dive watches, and this one is made from marine-grade titanium, with 200 meters of water resistance. Marine-grade titanium, in fact, is two times as light as stainless steel, and the 26-jewel Swiss-made STP 1-21 caliber automatic movement also boasts a rather impressive 44-hour power reserve.

In short, the Huckberry x Zodiac Titanium Dive Watch is hard-wearing and rugged as heck, with a striking blue dial and plenty of toughness built right in. And yes, again, it’s 15 percent off at checkout, and it belongs on your wrist ASAP.

The Thursday Buy: The Flint and Tinder Chambray Utility Shirt Is Your New Favorite Workshirt for Spring

When it comes time to welcome a new season, sometimes, it’s about getting back to work — literally and figuratively, be it spring cleaning, an early season road trip or a day in the yard (or at the bar). And as one might expect, there are plenty of menswear essentials from Huckberry to help you in all of those pursuits. In my experience, the retailer gets better with each passing season, and that certainly goes for the rugged Americana menswear of Flint and Tinder.

Naturally, you know the brand for its hard-wearing waxed jackets, comfortable stretch denim and classic everyday chinos, but the Flint and Tinder Chambray Utility Shirt takes things a step further.

As Huckberry rightly notes, chambray fabric — with its woven, interlocking white-and-blue fibers and tough, durable construction — has been a part of classic workwear pieces dating back a century (at least). The San Francisco and Austin-based retailer also notes that, well, “You can’t talk about workwear without talking about chambray shirts.”

Best chambray shirt for men.

They’re right on the money with that take, and the Flint and Tinder Chambray Utility Shirt, with 100 percent cotton construction in a breathable yet durable 5.5oz. weight, works well on its own or layered up with your favorite T-shirt on a breezy spring day.

Two button-front chest pockets (including one with a pen or tool slot) add an air of hard-working utility to the aptly named Flint and Tinder Chambray Utility Shirt, which also comes in a cool-as-can-be Natural Seeded Chambray color. Either way, it’s a hard-working option fit for whatever spring throws at you this season.

See Now, Buy Now: Huckberry Just Teamed Up with Aaron Levine on Some of the Best American-Made Menswear Around

Huckberry x Trumbull Detroit.

When looking for the best menswear essentials to round out my style rotation on the daily, I tend to look for relatable, reliable pieces (yes, relatable and reliable!) from sources I can trust — this you know well if you’ve read the blog on the regular, and Huckberry certainly qualifies.

The rugged-meets-refined retailer has certainly set a high bar to clear, which is what makes the San Fran and Austin-based brand so impressive in its latest meeting of the minds. My friends, get ready to meet Trumbull Detroit, a new collaboration between Huckberry and lauded menswear designer and expert Aaron Levine.

Huckberry x Trumbull Detroit

If that name sounds familiar, there’s plenty of good reason behind that: Levine was the menswear mind behind Club Monaco, masters of accessible tailoring and sportswear, as well as the resurgence of Abercrombie and Fitch across the past decade.

And now, he’s back at it again, teaming up with Huckberry on Trumbull Detroit, a line of stylish, vintage-inspired sportswear that arrives just in time for early spring. The line focuses on classic Americana styles, including one of the best hoodies for men, a classic crewneck sweatshirt in a vintage wash, a super-soft vintage wash T-shirt and even a casually cool quarter-zip sweater.

The Trumbull Detroit line might seem simple enough on the surface, but it’s packed with some of the best casual style picks for men this spring, particularly for weekend lounging, morning coffee runs, cozy weekends away and, well, the list goes on and on.

Garment-dyed 100 percent USA-grown cotton runs throughout the line, but what’s even more impressive is the fact that Huckberry x Trumbull Detroit is made the old-school way — in the U.S.A., and as the name would imply, in Detroit itself.

Best USA-made hooded sweatshirt for men.

They don’t quite make menswear like this anymore, with a pleasing range of casual, effortlessly cool silhouettes, high-quality fabrication and of course, USA-made construction. That naturally means these pieces are pricier than average ($148 for a Trumbull Detroit hoodie, for instance), but between the soft fleece, durable fabric and made-in-America construction, it’s an investment that should certainly pay off.

When you want the best of the best, with an eye for detail, classic design and that key mix of reliability and relatability, turn now towards Trumbull Detroit and your friends at Huckberry — they won’t let you down.

The Tuesday Steal: Save 30 Percent on the Best Light Wash Jeans for Spring from Mott and Bow

Mott and Bow men's denim review.

When the weather takes a turn for the better, well, that’s when it’s time to dust off some of those trusty spring style essentials — like a pair of the best light wash jeans from my friends at Mott and Bow. Light wash jeans are an ideal style move for, well, the lighter, sunnier, warmer days of spring and summer, with an easygoing air that adds particular appeal alongside staple pieces like one of the best crewneck sweaters or, better still, a casually cool T-shirt or short-sleeve henley.

And there’s no time like the present to get some of the best men’s light wash jeans on sale. Speaking of sales: Yes, that’d be the Mott and Bow Winter Sale, a close-out opportunity to save 30 percent on styles like the Mott and Bow Laight Jeans.

Best light wash jeans for men.

They boast a mid-weight cotton denim fabric (with 2 percent elastane for stretch), which is then elevated with a 16 percent stretch factor (take heed — 2 percent stretch fabric but a 16 percent stretch factor). But the most important factor when it comes to the Mott and Bow Winter Sale? Those crucial savings of 30 percent off. Here just in time for a new season, find your new favorite jeans ASAP, my friends.

See Now, Buy Now: Amberjack’s New Slip-Ons Are the Most Comfortable Shoes to Buy for Early Spring

Amberjack slip-ons review.

Just when you thought a pair of dress shoes — or rather, a company making some of the most comfortable dress shoes on the market — couldn’t possibly get any more comfortable, well, meet the latest and greatest from Amberjack.

The young upstart brand, which incorporates incredible comfort technology into pairs of the best lace-up boots and the best loafers on the market, just dropped the Amberjack Slip-Ons, a new and improved take on its low-profile loafers that hits the market in just time for early spring.

Best new leather loafers for men.

Perhaps this is the first Amberjack review you’re diving into, but I’ve had the pleasure of trying out the brand these past couple years — believe me when I say, you’ve never quite tried out a brand like this. And when it comes to the Amberjack Slip-Ons, the difference is both built right into these shoes, as well as instantly noticeable on the outside.

The use of A-grade, full-grain leather in rich colors like Honey, as seen above, is a major positive, but the dual-function athletic outsole works seamlessly with the heat-activated insole for an incredibly smooth, comfortable, springy ride underfoot.

The arch support is also activated by heat, giving you an extra jolt in terms of rebound, and the Amberjack Slip-Ons also feature helpful details like a back heel pull tab for an easy-on, easy-off experience. I think you’ll also find the profile of your new favorite slip-ons is sleek and dressy enough to work at the office, especially with tailored chinos.

That being said, your new favorite loafers can also work particularly well with light wash jeans — for some high-low spring style — or with classic dark blue jeans. And all the while you’ll find a standout blend of comfort and great looks from your new Amberjack Slip-Ons. Get right to it, my friends.
