The Thursday Buy: The Mack Weldon WARMKNIT Flannel is Winter’s Best Flannel Shirt

There’s no shortage of flannel shirts on the market these days, but there’s only one retailer making the best men’s flannel shirt for guys on the go, and that’s Mack Weldon. The NYC retailer has built a super-strong Web presence over the last decade, with a focus on reaching customers online and an even tighter focus on making some of the best basics for men. That same approach extends into each product category introduced by the direct-to-consumer company, an approach that allows them to make the best flannel shirt for men (alongside its much-loved Mack Weldon boxer briefs, T-shirts and much more). It’s a careful process that’s yielded serious dividends, and they’ve certainly got a fan in this menswear writer.

So, why should you stock up on the Mack Weldon WARMKNIT Flannel right now? I can think of plenty of reasons, each one better than the last if you value the right blend of rugged good looks and top-notch performance. Just like, say, the Mack Weldon Ace Crew Neck, it exudes both versatile style and technical functionality and comfort, making it an easy pick-up for yourself or a nice gift for the stylish guy in your life. The ever-wearable Mack Weldon WARMKNIT Flannel gets its edge from the brand’s Thermolite® technology, which provides insulating warmth alongside a moisture-wicking interior. These two features alone make it one of the best men’s flannel shirts, but it gets better from there.

The Mack Weldon WARMKNIT Flannel is really the total package as far as flannel shirts are concerned, with a tailored fit that makes it dressy enough to wear on its own, either tucked in or untucked, at the office with some Mack Weldon Maverick Tech Chinos. Of course, the Mack Weldon WARMKNIT Flannel is also soft-brushed for cozy comfort, offering up a modern feel that works seven days a week, with your favorite pair of blue jeans or even Mack Weldon joggers for some high-low style. Better still, this classic-yet-contemporary flannel shirt works well when layered under one of the best travel jackets (from Mack Weldon, naturally) for true go-anywhere style.

There are also plenty of standard-issue flannel shirt touches, like two front-button chest pockets, on the Mack Weldon WARMKNIT Flannel. As if that wasn’t enough, you’re getting a versatile flannel shirt for home or office for under $100 — if it seems like the Mack Weldon WARMKNIT Flannel is too good to be true, well, it’s surely not. To please every palette, the always-cool Mack Weldon WARMKNIT Flannel comes in five pattern options and one crisp, solid colorway. Consider getting two (or heck, even three) to make the Mack Weldon WARMKNIT Flannel your go-to fall and winter office shirt. It can do just about anything you ask of it though, including winter road trips and holiday affairs. Try out Mack Weldon and see for yourself.

Faherty Brand Review

Take your pick between seven cool and iconic patterns for winter style from Faherty Brand.

The best men’s flannel shirts have a few things in common, and yet this particular shirt rises above the rest. It’s made with soft organic cotton infused with stretch fabric for comfort and layering in these quarantine times. Better still, you can pick it up in one of seven cool and eye-catching patterns, including the classic Blue Rose Gingham seen above. The button chest pocket adds to the shirt’s more easygoing feel, giving it the sort of look that pairs easily with a thermal henley or a graphic tee for a pop of visual interest. And because it’s tailored but not overly tight, you can readily layer it up or wear it on its own, especially untucked with expertly faded denim or tan chinos. Throw on your favorite pair of leather boots and call it good (or rather, get out there and get a growler of local, brewery-fresh beer, yes?). The Faherty Brand Stretch Seaview Flannel Shirt  checks all the proper boxes these days, to say the very least. Make it yours and make it work for you.

Style Pick of the Week: Western Rise TechWool Flannel Shirt

A performance-minded flannel shirt for all your winter pursuits.

There are classic flannel shirts that call to mind cold winters, chilly mornings, the good old days, and perhaps … a certain lack of modern style. Now, make no mistake, I love — I mean, LOVE — a rugged flannel shirt as much as the next guy (check out this Filson flannel shirt, for starters), but what if you’re looking for a modern flannel shirt? That’s where Western Rise enters the equation today, and they do so with one of the best men’s flannel shirts you can buy right now. Yes indeed, the Western Rise TechWool Flannel Shirt delivers all the style points you’d expect from your standard flannel shirt, and it does so using fabrication and product specs that are as modern as can be. To wit: The TechWool Flannel Shirt is made with a blend of COOLMAX fibers and fine-gauge wool, plus elasterell polyester for stretch, comfort and breathability — it’s a downright revolutionary fabric blend that’s as comfortable as it is stylish. So, bonus points to Western Rise for that. Did I mention it’s also moisture-wicking and odor-resistant? Because it can do that, too.

SHOP: Western Rise TechWool Flannel Shirt

One of the best flannel shirts — and one that blends performance and style.

All of that would certainly be enough to make it one of the best men’s shirts on the market — period — but it’s also got a few more things going for it (to say the least). Namely, this slim flannel shirt features a fit that’s, well, slim and tailored — not bad for a cold-weather staple. That means, in my mind, that you can pair the Western Rise TechWool Flannel Shirt with your favorite henley or all on its own underneath everything from a tough workwear jacket to a stylish denim jacket (add a scarf and classic beanie cap when things get chilly). The Cloud color is cool and contemporary, as well — it’s almost akin to your trusty classic Oxford shirt, so you can wear it with a navy cotton blazer or a shawl collar cardigan to head to the office (yes, yes you can). That go-anywhere potential also means you can wear this stylish flannel shirt each and every day of the week, and that means on the weekends (with a laidback crewneck sweatshirt and chinos), as well as  during the work week and out on the road. For a one-of-a-kind flannel shirt, the only option right now is the Western Rise TechWool Flannel Shirt.

Cheers!

Style Pick of the Week: Filson Western Flannel Shirt

The right way to layer up for chilly fall weather, guaranteed.

It’s high time we started diving into prime Pacific Northwest gear purveyor Filson, seeing as fall is perhaps the perfect season for this lauded heritage brand. And if it’s one of the best men’s flannel shirts that you seek for the season, then you should look no further than the Filson Western Flannel Shirt, a historically inspired, tough flannel shirt that cuts no corners when you want a dependable layer for chilly weather. This flannel shirt belongs on your list of fall style essentials for plenty of reasons, the least of which being that it’s got plenty of quality and versatility in terms of its specs. That shouldn’t surprise you if you’re a fan of Filson, but it’s still impressive. Namely, the Filson Western Flannel Shirt features the look and feel of a classic Western shirt, yet it’s done up in durable cotton twill fabric for uncompromising durability.

Yet, that cotton twill is also brushed for softness — in short, this is a classic flannel shirt that’s going to feel like you’ve had it for years … right out of the box. Bravo on that front, Filson. And the other positive? Because this durable shirt is crafted to the brand’s top-notch standards, it’s made to be worn both indoors and outdoors, in the worst weather imaginable, for years to come — it’s no joke. Snap-front pockets and button snaps make it easy to layer up underneath a tough waxed trucker jacket or atop a thermal shirt (or with all three of those pieces at once).

#OOTD: The Best Way to Wear a Flannel Shirt This Fall

Gather ’round, Style Guide readers — today’s #OOTD tackles a favorite topic when it comes to rugged men’s fall style: How to wear a flannel shirt this season. If flannel shirts call to mind the mid-aughts boom of American workwear, well, they should — they were a key piece of #menswear then, and the right flannel shirt is just as relevant now. Today’s shirt of choice, the Filson Vintage Flannel Shirt, channels just the vibe you want when wearing a flannel shirt. It’s got all the trappings of a classic piece, but it’s just a bit more modern. With a cool black-and-cream color, it’s less outdoors-y and instead, just …  a cool shirt. And the way you wear your new favorite flannel shirt is going to make all the difference, too. Pair it with rugged style essentials like a premium slim henley and textured Bedford cord pants, and you’re going to shake off all those “urban lumberjack” connotations. Fear not, though — we’re still finishing off this #OOTD with rugged leather boots.  I know this much: You can make this outfit work for you at a football tailgate, at a bonfire or on a brewery tour — and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Let me know your thoughts over on Twitter when you get the chance, if you so please.

Best men's flannel shirts

Think again about how you wear your flannel shirt — this Filson shirt bucks the trend and looks great.

The Flannel Shirt: Filson Vintage Flannel Work Shirt in Black and Cream, $145 — The centerpiece of many a stylish and rugged fall outfit, Filson gets the color and classic fabrication just right with its Vintage Flannel Work Shirt.

The Henley: Billy Reid Speckled Henley, $155.98 —  Yet another critical fall layer, this made-in-Italy Billy Reid henley is a premium upgrade over a standard thermal henley — perfect for layering with a Filson flannel.

The Pants: BANKS Roll Bedford Cord Jean, $75 — Rather than reaching for dark blue denim, reach for the slim, fall-ready BANKS Bedford Cord Jean — textured, unique and slim-fitting.

The Boots: Wolverine Original 1000 Mile Boots in Roughout, $299.98 (When On-Sale) — For fall, Wolverine has taken its 1000 Mile Boots and upgraded them in a rich, seasonally ready roughout leather. Perfect.
The Belt: Sturdy Brothers Everyday Belt in Chestnut, $80 — To stand up to your sturdy leather boots and a rugged flannel shirt, a tough leather belt from Sturdy Brothers is just what the doctor ordered.
The Watch: Pantor Sea Lion Watch, $424.98— This outfit is packed with fall-ready neutrals, so shake up your wrist game with the striking, durable Pantor Sea Lion Watch. It’s the ideal, rugged watch to wear to a football game or a bar crawl.
The Bag: Topo Designs Mountain Briefcase, $119.98 — Whether you head to a house party or out on a day trip, the sturdy, well-made Topo Designs Mountain Briefcase is more casual (and durable) than the briefcase moniker implies.
The Beard Balm: Upstate Stock Willowemoc Beard Balm, $22 Upstate Stock happens to be one of my favorite spots for menswear in Brooklyn — and they make a nice beard balm to tame your mane this season.
Are you sold yet on the versatile, rugged styling potential of the  Vintage Flannel Work Shirt from Filson? In a cool color scheme, it’ll work as a warm top layer over something as premium and understated as the Billy Reid Speckled Henley. And when you team up that combo with a crisp set of trousers like the BANKS Roll Bedford Cords, you’re set for casual fall excursions from the city to the country and back. Don’t step foot outside this fall without tough leather boots, either — I’d strongly urge you to invest in the stellar Wolverine 1000 Mile Boots — are you with me there? A durable, weather-ready watch like the Pantor Sea Lion Watch is going to fit right in with the tough nature of this outfit, and the Topo Designs Mountain Briefcase is standing at the ready if you need a new fall go-to to haul your everyday carry. So, I think we’re all set with today’s #OOTD. Thanks, as always, for reading!

A rugged, Portuguese-made shirt from a brand that consistently delivers on style essentials.

There are brands that almost make it ridiculously easy to get all your shopping done in one place — if you read The Style Guide, you know that Taylor Stitch is definitely one such brand.  It seems that just about anything you need on the #menswear front can be fulfilled by the brand — that goes for things like essential chambray shirting, classic men’s chinos made from durable fabric, and a drool-worthy leather jacket or two, and it’s particularly evident during times best suited to rugged gear (like fall). If you thought you couldn’t possibly need another reason to shop at Taylor Stitch, think again. In this instance, gentlemen (and ladies), the Crater Shirt is that very reason — and it’s a heck of a good one. It’s available for pre-order right now on the brand’s Web site for the very reasonable price of $98 — that means you should hop on  ordering one just as soon as you can. Clearly, fans of the brand got the memo — the Navy & Charcoal Plaid version seen here has been funded to the tune 146 percent. Now, what are you getting for that price? Starting with the brushed Portuguese flannel and rolling through to small details like the flap chest pocket and Japanese Urea cat’s eye buttons,  a heck of a shirt is what you’re getting. It plays right into the brand’s focus on producing timeless pieces that quickly turn into hard-wearing wardrobe staples. If you’ve checked out something as seemingly straightforward as the brand’s Brushed White Oxford, then you know that sentiment to be true. No matter the style, you’re getting the best they’ve got to offer. With the Crater Shirt, that means you’re also getting to pick between two color choices practically made for late fall, early winter and beyond.

The inverse of the option seen at the top of the page -- yet still just as stylish and versatile.

The reverse of the option seen at the top of the page — a Charcoal & Navy Plaid pattern that’s still just as stylish and versatile.

Seriously, you can’t go wrong with either the Navy & Charcoal Plaid  seen at the very top of the page, or the Charcoal & Navy Plaid pattern seen above. Still with me? Hopefully. Either way, you’re getting a durable, modern-fitting flannel shirt that’s heavy enough to wear as a shirt-jacket over a long-sleeve merino tee, comfortable enough to wear on its own, and stylish enough to fit in at the office with slim chinos — or atop slim raw denim at your favorite weekend watering hole. By pre-ordering now, you’re setting yourself up for a heck of a stylish November (that’s when the shirt ships out). It’s a hallmark of the brand that the style is still one you could easily wear with a variety of looks — that goes for the snowy depths of January just as much as it does for crisp November days. If it sounds strange to think that far ahead, think of this as a long-term investment that’s well worth your while. Heck, if the Crater Shirt is anything like the brand’s lauded Yosemite Shirt, it’s absolutely a keeper. For all of us fans of Taylor Stitch, that’s excellent news indeed. What are you waiting for? Head to the Taylor Stitch site to pre-order the Crater Shirt now (that’s not a request!).

If you do pre-order it, let me know on Twitter — and stay stylish in the meantime,

Style Pick of the Week: Todd Snyder Hemingway Elbow Patch Shirt

Rustic yet refined at the same time -- the Hemingway Elbow Patch Shirt from Todd Snyder.

Rustic yet refined at the same time — the Hemingway Elbow Patch Shirt from Todd Snyder.

During my Christmas trip to Florida last week, I was pretty lucky to get some terrific gifts (mostly #menswear-inclined) from Santa. And among those gifts was none other than the standout Hemingway Elbow Patch Shirt you see at the top of the page from lauded American menswear designer Todd Snyder. The Midwest-born designer has been delivering on modern updates to heritage classics these past few years, and this soft cotton shirt with sturdy suede elbow patches definitely checks off some key boxes in that regard. Even better for you, my fellow menswear fan — it’s on-sale right now (marked down to $129 from $185). That price is still enough to scare people away, but given the brand’s history of quality and style, it might not be a bad way to spend your bonus. It’s great in another regard, too: As the weather gets colder, I’m all about incorporating texture into my wardrobe, from a wool bomber to a thick shawl cardigan and tough denim. The inclination toward richer textures goes for shirting as well, and it’s a move that you should consider making yourself — a cotton flannel shirt can serve a two-fold role; if it’s cut slim enough, you can wear it under a V-neck sweater, and if it proves to be hardy enough, you can definitely layer it over a henley (as I did on a trip to Grand Rapids this past fall).

Cold-weather style essentials with which to pair this shirt -- the Buffalo Bobber Glove from Iron & Resin, and a Merino Watch Cap from American Trench.

A closer look at the elbow patches and texture that make this piece special. Pictured with cold-weather style essentials ideal for the season — the Buffalo Bobber Glove from Iron & Resin, and a Merino Watch Cap from American Trench.

The grey plaid of this shirt is understated, and the spread (not buttondown) collar means this shirt leans a bit dressier than most flannels — especially when worn under something like a slim navy blazer. Crucially, the elbow patches add a nice bit of visual interest and a vintage look when the shirt is worn on its own.  In fact, it could be a neat style swerve to ditch the jacket and throw on a slim herringbone tie and some tan chinos for an office-ready take. Throw in some brown leather sneakers and that look could be complete. Of course, this shirt is probably going to work best alongside rugged denim and sturdy winter boots, maybe even underneath a vest if you’re feeling particularly rugged. The slim collar and muted colors make it dressy, but those elbow patches and the rustic pattern make it rugged — that’s exactly what you need in a shirt this winter.

Do you own any Todd Snyder shirts? How would you style this piece, elbow patches and all?
