The Friday Read: The Huckberry Summer Sale, The Best Outerknown Menswear & A New Shinola Watch

Best summer menswear deals.

Folks, is it hard to believe it’s already (almost) the end of July? Summer is rushing by, yes indeed, and although I might be on the road this weekend — in lovely Portland, Maine, as you might have seen on my Instagram! — there’s no time to waste when it comes down to getting dressed in style this summer. Case in point: Today’s featured sale in our Friday Read, the Huckberry Annual Summer Sale. It runs through Monday and offers you up to 45 percent off the best men’s style gear of the season, and it won’t be the last time you hear about it this weekend. I can guarantee you it’ll give you the best chance yet to step into summer in style — and yes, there’s still plenty of time to dress well in the heat right now.

As for me, well, as I said, the weekend rolls along as I check out a beloved Northeast city in this intense heat wave. With that being said, here are just a few key style reads to get your Friday rolling the right way. After all, the Huckberry Annual Summer Sale awaits, so let’s get right into the rest of your weekend, yes? Yes indeed. Cheers!

  • Here’s one weekend kickstarter I think you’re going to love, especially if you’re a boating enthusiast, and especially if you’ve had your eyes on a stylish Shinola men’s watch. Head over to Maxim to read my take on the newest Shinola watch, one that’s more than ready to hit the high seas, thanks to its sailing-minded functionality. Your new favorite timepiece is up for grabs, folks.
Most sustainable style for men.
  • We’re not done talking about the best men’s style deals quite yet, my friends. Make your way over to Outerknown — the sustainable style brand founded in part by legendary surfer Kelly Slater — to shop a plethora of the best menswear deals in all manner of categories for the rest of this season (and beyond).
  • How about one more pick to jumpstart your weekend, yes? I’ll take you back over to Huckberry to shop the perfect mix of rugged, casual and throwback-inspired gear: The Huckberry x Coors partnership harnesses Huckberry’s principles of rugged adventure and plenty of fun, and it does so with serious style in mind. I’ve got you covered with yesterday’s blog post, my friends.

I’m going to wrap things up here in the spirit of keeping you on your toes — and in the spirit of giving you time to shop plenty of covetable menswear via the Huckberry Annual Summer Sale. Good luck out there and stay cool, folks!

The Friday Read: A Pure Michigan Wedding & A Hometown Trip

My friends, the photo at the top of the page really says it all. I’m back in Michigan in the summer for the first time since, well, last summer, and it’s prime Pure Michigan time. If you follow me on Instagram, you’re well aware that I’m back in my hometown of Mason, Michigan (population: 8,000) to visit with family and old family friends before heading down the coast to the lovely shores of Lake Michigan for a dear college friend’s wedding — two outstanding reasons to make the Fourth of July trek home!

I’ve stayed busy this week, of course, writing about the best travel pants and covering topics like the best Irish whiskey over at Men’s Journal, but moreso than that, it’s been a joy to be back in Mason for the first time since 2018! There’s been plenty of quality family time, a tour of the old sights and sounds of the town, and of course, a Pure Michigan craft beer or two. And hey: In the spirit of making it count and making the most of my time here, I’m signing off today — but you can expect two weekend posts per usual, so be sure to swing on by (and drop me a line if you have any Benton Harbor picks!). Cheers, my friends!

The Friday Read: Filson’s Sem-Annual Sale, The Best Summer Colognes & A New Huckberry Watch

Folks, welcome back to another edition of the week-closing Friday Read here at The Style Guide, where we’ve got a lot of ground to cover. Let’s start with the fact that yes, as the headline would imply, the Filson Semi-Annual Sale just kicked off, and it’s got a ton of the best summer style essentials up for grabs. It’s rare that a retailer like the famed Pacific Northwest heritage outfitter offers up the best in-season gear (and gear for the seasons ahead!) at a discount, so you’d do very well indeed to check out the Filson Semi-Annual Sale.

The rest of the way forward this weekend, well, I’d recommend you keep things rolling along with a few choice style reads below, of course. As for me? I have stories to write up for SPY.com as well as Effortless Gent, and in the midst of it all — including recovering from my standout trip to London last week! — I’ll be prepping for yet another trip.

The jaunt in question? A return to Michigan for the wedding of a longtime college friend (Go Green!), plus some Fourth of July celebrations. What’s on the docket for you? Besides, of course, checking out my recommended menswear shopping and reading picks? Without further ado, let’s get into it below. Cheers, my friends.

  • If you happen to read the blog on the regular, consider this one a bit of a refresher — there’s a standout new, perfectly rugged, highly stylish watch up for grabs right now at Huckberry, and the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf Pro Diver Titanium is well worth the investment. The timepiece, as I wrote about here on the blog, celebrates the Swiss watchmaker’s 140th anniversary, and it does so with both excellent looks and high-performing capabilities in mind. Check it out for yourself ASAP.
  • Summer is high time to refresh plenty of things all around — be it your wardrobe or your travel plans, or your summer scent. Think light and airy, and of course, head on over to Maxim to read about my latest guide to the best summer colognes.
  • I’ll leave you with one more recommended style pick from my neck of the woods. The best shorts for summer are a must-have in these casual, increasingly hot times, so you’d do very well to keep it locked here on the blog and check out the Mack Weldon Maverick Tech Chino Shorts, as written about by yours truly. They’re as good as it gets for summer, my friends.

That’s going to wrap things up for my latest Friday dispatch, my friends — here’s to a great start to the holiday weekend, and here’s to stepping out in style this summer. As always: Thanks for reading!

The Friday Read: A London Trip With Dickies Workwear

My friends, if you can believe it or not, the headline above isn’t a typo or a mistake — I really am writing to you from the very hip confines of Shoreditch in London, one of the city’s trendiest neighborhoods (as seen above!), where I’m in the midst of yet another press trip! The brand in question for this lifetime trip? Ever-popular workwear and streetwear stalwarts Dickies, a huge brand Stateside in Texas and an even bigger brand abroad, thanks to its popularity among skateboarders and stylish youths — and of course, writers like myself! Dickies is celebrating 100 years, and invited myself and Gear Patrol Editor Evan Malachosky along for the ride.

On the docket so far this week? A celebration of a century of Dickies workwear, including a lovely dinner at the very on-brand The Bike Shed in Shoreditch, a preview of the brand’s upcoming Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 offerings, and a special documentary premiere at London’s Steel Yard nodding to 100 years of heritage and history. In the meantime, I’ve had the chance to explore London and Shoreditch on foot, enjoy a classic Full English Breakfast or two, and take in a couple pints at cool local spots like The Royal Oak. Needless to say, it’s already been a lifetime “work” trip for which I’m extremely grateful!

You can — and should! — keep up with the rest of the fun on my Instagram, because I’ve got a busy London weekend ahead, too (including a legendary concert — stay tuned!). For now, I’ve got some more coffee to down and some workwear to write about — expect a full dispatch for one of the many sites for which I write in the weeks ahead. Cheers, Godspeed and thanks for reading, as ever!

The Friday Read: The Best Summer T-Shirt, A New York Wedding & New Luxury Scotch

If you’ve been keeping up with the blog, perhaps you remember my May jaunt down to Philadelphia for my longtime friend Drew’s bachelor party — well, the day is finally upon us (or at least, it will be come tomorrow). It’s high time to celebrate Drew’s New York City wedding this weekend on the Aqua Azul, about as unique and lovely a setting for a wedding in the Big Apple as I’ve seen in a long time.

It wraps up a busy week for me around these parts, what with events with the likes of The Balvenie (a Scotch tasting) and Rough Trade Records (a concert showcase at Mercury Lounge). With all that being said, I’ve got more work to do yet for sites like Maxim — more on that in just a second — and then, of course, a wedding to enjoy this weekend. Follow along with all the fun on my Instagram, and in the meantime, let’s dive into the rest of today’s Friday Read.

  • Speaking of Scotch just moments ago, here’s something to add to your wish list or mood board. It’s an out-of-this-world partnership between heritage distiller Bowmore and Aston Martin, the maker of some of the finest cars on the planet. The end result? A futuristic decanter and gift set containing iconic Scotch, all with the price tag to match: Try a whopping $125,000. It’s out of reach, to be sure, but a guy can dream, and I got to dive into this seriously cool partnership over at Maxim.
  • If you’ve been keeping up with the blog, hopefully, you’re aware of the importance of curating a well-stocked closet of summer style essentials. That’s what I talked about just yesterday, in fact: The importance of upgrading your basics, like shopping one of the best T-shirts for men. Head over to this blog post to get the full scoop.
  • I’m all about the importance of getting the small details correct when getting dressed on the daily, like wearing a great watch. You don’t have to break the bank to make this style move work for you, though: In fact, you can (and should!) head over to SPY.com to check out my guide to the best cheap watches. It’s really that simple, folks.

That’s going to do it for me today as I wrap up the work week and roll into an NYC wedding weekend. Be sure to keep up with the fun on my Instagram, of course, and stay safe (and stylish!) out there.

The Friday Read: Vintage Rolexes, The Best New Huckberry Shirt & The Best Summer Suits

It’s been a busy week in the menswear world and in my neck of the woods in Brooklyn, so let’s get right into it with today’s Friday Read, shall we? And on that note: What’s on your style wish list these days? Perhaps, a vintage Rolex or two? As costly as those watches tend to get, it’s easy to dream — and it’s easy to scour a site like Fog City Vintage to find an option to turn into your “grail watch.” That being said, I did just that — I spent time poring over the Fog City site — to write all about some of the best vintage Rolex watches for Maxim recently, one of many writing pursuits that’s kept me plenty busy as of late.

That’s not the only thing that’s been keeping me busy — I’ve got my next music feature in the works over at Atwood Magazine, with plans for more this month. And in the meantime, I’ll be doing my best to enjoy a lovely Brooklyn summer weekend with cold beer in hand (once my menswear writing is wrapped, that is). For now, let’s get into the spirit of the weekend with a few choice reads, shall we?

Best summer suits for men.
  • Summer wedding season draws ever closer, does it not? As does the need to suit up and look your very best for any formal occasion, even in the heat. It’s with that aim in mind — staying cool and looking stylish-as-can-be — that I wrote all about the best summer suits over at AskMen. Suit up out there, my friends!
  • In need of a quick and easy summer style upgrade? It can be yours with the latest blog post, published just yesterday, here at The Style Guide. Head over this way to read all about your new favorite summer shirt — it’s as simple as making a few clicks to upgrade your wardrobe, folks.
  • Here’s one more recommendation from the blog — in case you missed it earlier this week — on how to look your best this summer. It’s as easy as buying the new, breezy Mack Weldon Pima T-Shirt Polo — it’s as soft as a T-shirt, and as stylish as, well, a polo shirt. Make it yours today by reading this blog post.

And with that, I’ll bid you farewell (at least until tomorrow’s Saturday Style Pick, that is) and I’ll leave you to your summer shopping, strolling and sipping. Stay stylish out there, my friends!

The Friday Read: The Best Summer Beers, A Classic Summer T-Shirt and Bushmills Whiskey

Best summer beers to try now.

Folks, about how refreshing does that ice-cold summer beer look above? It’s Friday, after all, and happy hour draws neigh (or perhaps, you’re reading this during happy hour right now). That being said, I’m going to kickstart today’s Friday Read with a recommendation right off the bat: To really get in the spirit of summer, and to upgrade your beer fridge in the process, head over to Maxim to read my guide to the very best summer beers to sip on right now. Consider it but one checklist to get your weekend rolling in the right direction.

I’ll be on the hunt for some delicious summer beers myself this weekend, especially once I wrap up my writing work for sites like SPY.com and new gear Web site WERD.com. It’s also a momentous weekend for me in other ways, too — I get the opportunity to see one of my very favorite bands, the inimitable synth pop heroes Future Islands, at my favorite venue in the city, steel warehouse turned concert venue Brooklyn Steel! If you don’t yet know Future Islands, consider checking out the soulful song “Peach,” and then consider following me on Instagram to keep track of all the concert-related hijinks along the way. For now though, the rest of your Friday Read (and your weekend!) awaits.

  • The above T-shirt is just that: A simple T-shirt, right? I’d urge you to look more closely, because it’s a garment-dyed, vintage-style tee up for grabs right now at Bespoke Post, the kind of cool, breezy summer tee every guy can use. And better still is the fact that I wrote all about it on the blog just yesterday, in fact. Give it a read and consider adding it to your cart.
  • Elsewhere in my “world of writing,” you might say, I poured myself a nice dram of Bushmills Prohibition Recipe Whiskey and sat down to right all about the newest Bushmills x Peaky Blinders launch from the Official Whiskey of the Peaky Blinders. The British gangster drama blends some of my favorite things (fine tailoring, sharp haircuts and whiskey) into some explosive television, and it was such a thrill to cover the latest in this ongoing, seriously cool partnership for Maxim.
  • I’ll direct you back to my blog one last time before we wrap things up on this fine summer Friday. Finding the right mix of affordability and dependable style is a key idea behind, well, this very blog, so consider checking out the sub-$40 Huckberry Cruisers Sunglasses — they’re a prime weekend style move, and I wrote all about ’em earlier this week.

That’ll close out today’s Friday Read in fine form, I’d say — be sure to keep it tuned to the blog tomorrow for my Saturday Style Pick, then head back on Sunday to read about my latest Sunday Sale pick. Cheers, my friends!

The Friday Read: The Huckberry Memorial Day Sale, The Best Everyday Carry Picks & The Best Summer Sunglasses

Folks, can you believe it’s already here?? I’m talking, of course, about Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of summer and the chance to stock up — naturally — on the best summer menswear. Now, we’ve covered plenty of seasonal style staples as of late on the blog, including the best casual T-shirt and the best new summer shorts from Huckberry, but now’s your chance to really make these picks work for you. How so? Well, the Huckberry Memorial Day Sale is well underway, with the chance to take up to 35 percent off the best summer menswear across the board — this is one sale you’re not going to want to miss out on.

So, that’s my one recommendation to get your weekend rolling the right way — of course, I’ve got other style reads for your perusal below. And as for me, I’ll be enjoying the long holiday weekend right here in Brooklyn after several weeks of media trips (and one bachelor party!), which you’re well aware of if you follow me on Instagram. How do you plan to spend your weekend? Here’s to taking some time off, taking the time to honor our nation’s heroes and taking the time to shop some stylish menswear and sip some cold beer. Cheers and thanks for reading!

Best everyday carry essentials
  • What exactly makes up a great everyday carry? You know, those items you simply can’t leave the house without on the daily, be it your trusty pen, a notebook, a watch or your favorite pair of sunglasses? Over at SPY, I took a deep dive into the best EDC essentials to ensure you’re never without the right tools you need to take on your day-to-day adventures.
  • Despite my travels, I’ve been staying plenty busy on the writing front, all in the name of ensuring you gear up the right way for summer. With that lofty aim in mind, I wrote all about the coolest sunglasses for summer over at Maxim, and I got to shout out some of my favorite brands.
  • Here’s one more sale deal to get you primed and ready for the weekend. Just earlier this week on the blog, I wrote about the chance to save 30 percent on a standout Timex x Todd Snyder watch, the kind you can wear from sunrise to sunset and beyond this season. Shop accordingly, my friends.

That’ll do it for today’s edition of the Friday Read. I hope this weekend, you get some time off, you get a chance to reflect and rest, and of course, I hope you get ample opportunity to shop and save on the best summer menswear across the board. As always, thanks for reading!

The Friday Read: Recuerdo Mezcal, The Strokes & The Best Double-Breasted Suits

My friends, it might be hard to believe, but if you follow me on Instagram, you know it’s the case — I’m on the road once again, and on my second jaunt to Mexico in just about six months! It’s a far cry from the pandemic times of last year and the year prior, and it’s every bit as exciting as my November trip to Tequila with Jose Cuervo. In fact, it’s different and yet the same, in some ways — I’m on the road to Oaxaca to experience the delight that is Recuerdo Mezcal, and I’m excited to take a deep dive into the brand for Maxim.com. That’s worthy of a toast, is it not??

Prior to this trip though, I simply had to add in another dash of Mexico-centric fun, and it had everything to do with one of my favorite bands: That’d be The Strokes, as I wrote about for Esquire last fall. As luck would have it, the famed NYC rockers just so happened to play in Mexico City last nite, the absolute perfect way to kick off a momentous Mexico trip. Suffice to say, it’s a show I’ll never forget. And again, that’s worthy of a toast, is it not?? With that being said: I’ve got some mezcal to taste and plenty of fun on the horizon. Cheers and thanks for reading!

  • Well, my friends: Do you have a summer wedding on your radar in the months ahead? Are you looking to make a major splash? I’ve got just the style move up for your consideration today. Over at SPY, I dove into the history of the double-breasted suit, including my picks for the best double-breasted suits. Shop carefully and shake up your menswear wardrobe in a major way.
  • Let’s go a bit more casual, shall we? If you’re less worried about how to dress for a summer wedding and more concerned about how to dress for your 9-to-5 grind, fear not: The good folks at Huckberry have come up with the perfect lineup of the best smart-casual essentials to shop now, and I wrote all about it here on the blog.
  • Here’s one more unique spring and summer style tip to consider embracing right now. Have you ever given white jeans a try? While they’re quite the bold style move, they just might work for you if you snag the right pair — with that being said, give my latest for AskMen a read if you feel like upgrading your style in a major way with a pair of the best white jeans. How about it, ehh??

Alright, my friends. I hope those three style tips and reads above were helpful — to say the very least. Let’s gear up for summer in style, and here’s to a fun-filled weekend in Mexico — be sure to follow me on Instagram to keep up with each step of the journey!

The Friday Read: It’s Always Sunny In Philadephia

My friends, welcome to another edition of The Friday Read as yet another sunny spring weekend rolls on. I’m keeping today’s post light and fun, and Philadelphia-centric — in keeping up with my onslaught of travel over the past month (which you very well might have seen on my Instagram), I’m on the road once more. This time, as you might have guessed, I’m in the City of Brotherly Love to celebrate my great friend Drew’s upcoming nuptials, bachelor-party style. I’m sure we’ll have a cold Philly beer or two, with much to reflect on and appreciate.

If you’d like to stay busy this weekend — but in a leisurely way — head over to check out my latest writing work over at Maxim, where I’ve lately covered everything from Bluetooth speakers to the coolest sunglasses for summer. I’ve also stayed plenty busy otherwise — I wrote about the best left-handed watches — yes, a watch designed for lefties! — over at SPY, which could be just the upgrade your watch collection needs. Hopefully, you’ll find the style upgrade you need.

For now, I’ve got a train to catch and some much-needed time with lifelong friends on the horizon. Cheers, and Godspeed!
