See Now, Buy Now: Keep Warm with a Pair of Stylish Leather Gloves from Hestra

Exceptionally well-made leather gloves that’ll serve you well this winter.

Let’s get one thing straight — a pair of Hestra leather gloves are one of the many things you shouldn’t be leaving the house without this winter. I’d wager you should say goodbye to the days of flimsy, thin gloves you picked up near the checkout aisle at your local sporting goods store (been there, done that!), and instead turn toward a purchase you won’t regret: A pair of stylish leather gloves from a brand that knows a thing or two (or three!) about making ’em. It’s refreshing and exciting to see a brand continue to hone in on the thing they do best, and in the case of Hestra (as seen in this post on the best men’s winter accessories), that thing happens to be crafting the best gloves on the market, no questions asked. The Hestra Utsjo in Elk/Fleece is pictured above, and with good reason. Made from Nordic elk leather, the brand crafts its gloves in largely the same way they have since the company’s founding in 1936 — that’s applause-worthy, right?

A fleece lining and Primaloft polyester insulation ensures top-of-the-line warmth and breathablity when it comes to Hestra leather gloves, while a two-position cuff button offers stability and a nice fit. The overall effect is an especially refined pair of gloves that keep you warm and look a heck of a lot better than a technical winter pair. Why is it worth it to splurge on a pair of stylish leather gloves when you could easily just pick up a random pair from a bargain bin? It’s worth it in the same way it pays off to upgrade your everyday chambray shirt or step into classic slim denim — if you look good, you feel good. And in this instance, you look good, you feel good … and your hands won’t get frostbite! Truly, that’s important. It’s a win-win all the way around when it comes to Hestra leather gloves and in particular, the Hestra Utsjo in Elk/Fleece.

What’s your take on investing in these stylish leather gloves?  Let me know via Twitter!

#OOTD: A New Way to Dress for the Office This Winter

Believe me, I love getting out of the office at the end of the day — and on the weekends especially — as much as the next guy. But there comes a time when you’ve got to put your nose to the grindstone, get to work and knock out that presentation or report. For all those days, this #OOTD — starting with none other than a classic navy blazer— is here to help. Better yet, it’s geared to help you dress for the office this winter (and we’re in for a long one, I feel). As you’ll see, we’re even throwing on a stylish wool tie today, offset by a classic casual shirt from our friends at Flint and Tinder. The real kicker comes with the fact that, since this is winter and all, we’ll be taking on the elements with a pair of rugged leather boots, along with some slim wool trousers. At the end of the day, this ensemble is going to look great, provide some warmth in winter weather (wear it with this Billy Reid coat), and give you your best chance at looking great. The best part? There’s no overly gaudy Christmas sweater in sight – — just the winter style essentials you know and love. You could very well be the best-dressed guy in the office, and it’s only going to get better this season. To keep up with more from the blog, head to The Style Guide Facebook page.

Between the buttondown shirt, the rugged boots and the crisp wool trousers … this is your new office #OOTD.

    • The Blazer: Grayers Hutton Wool Sport Coat, $195 — A simple and subtly stylish, classic navy blazer never failed — right?
    • The Shirt: Flint and Tinder Check Buttondown, $108 — Let’s nod toward fall and winter with this perfectly cut, American-made shirt from Flint and Tinder — shall we?
    • The Tie: Pocket Square Clothing Simon Wool Tie, $56 — The curveball here comes from wearing a stylish tie that’s just slightly different in color from your jacket (a la James Bond in Morocco).
    • The Trousers: Taylor Stitch Telegraph Trousers, $178 — The Telegraph Trousers are a well-tailored favorite back for another year. Your winter business go-to.
    • The Boots: Allen Edmonds Normandy Cap Toe Boots, $295 — Yes, Allen Edmonds knows how to make a rugged-yet-dressy pair of boots, too.
    • The Socks: CHUP Fika Socks, $35 — A pair of eyecatching socks like the CHUP Fika Socks are just enough to stand out — in the right way — at the water cooler.
    • The Belt: Red Wing Heritage Pioneer Belt, $89 — Hey, you’re going to need a belt to hold up those Telegraph Trousers — might as well make it the Red Wing Heritage Pioneer Belt.
    • The Watch: Jack Mason Aviator Watch, $195 — We’re all about subtle style essentials that stand out quietly — like this durable and office-ready Jack Mason watch.

Alright, that’s wrapping up this #OOTD today. What’s your favorite part? Does it mirror how you normally dress for the office? I’m all for mixing things up a  bit with a patterned American-made shirt in a seasonally friendly color — plus, it handsomely accents the classic navy blazer. Better yet, a stylish wool tie gives you the chance to sharpen up just a bit. And you can’t really go wrong with the timeless Telegraph Trousers, an ideal complement to the rugged Allen Edmonds captoe boots. It’s an office-ready combo that also won’t buckle when you step outside on your commute or a lunchtime walk. It’s as ready for a Christmas party as it is for your next big presentation — stylish accessories like the Jack Mason Aviator Watch help ensure that, and your stylish CHUP socks are also a prime way to inject a little color and pattern in this #OOTD. Of course, I’m also all about the little details that can go the distance — take the investment-level Red Wing Heritage Pioneer Belt, for instance. Taken in full, this look is sharp, tailored and business casual — you’re not going to be overly dressed up, yet you won’t be dressed down, either. Again, it could just be the perfect look for the office this winter. That’s my opinion, at least. Let me know what you think of it on Twitter. Thanks for reading!

I kid, I kid. For what it’s worth, I also love the timeless durability of the Filson 48-Hour Duffle. How about you? Feel free to join me on Twitter to weigh in. Thanks for reading!

Style Pick of the Week: Taylor Stitch Cashmere Elbow Patch Sweater

Wear this sweater any way you want — it’s that well-made.

Now that we’ve hit December — seriously, check your calendar! — you would do well to start adding some of the best men’s sweaters into your winter looks. In fact, a stylish winter sweater can serve as a centerpiece for all of your other men’s style essentials this season — in the right fit and fabric, the best men’s sweaters can be dressed up or down., worn with chinos or faded jeans in equal measure. Take the handsome Taylor Stitch Cashmere Elbow Patch Sweater, for instance. It’ll set you back a pretty penny, to be sure ($228 via Bespoke Post), but it’s an investment that pays dividends right away, from the refined profile to the rugged appeal of sheepskin leather elbow patches and the neutral Olive color. This is certainly the kind of sweater you can wear in more ways than one, and you should expect nothing less from the fine folks at Taylor Stitch. If it was possible to call a sweater “beautiful” — which it certainly is — mark my words, the Taylor Stitch Cashmere Elbow Patch Sweater would definitely qualify. Made from pure cashmere, hence the hefty price, this sweater should feel soft and cozy no matter if you throw it on over a classic white T-shirt or decide to pair it with a crisp white Oxford and a silver knit tie.

SHOP: The Taylor Stitch Cashmere Elbow Patch Sweater

This sweater checks all the boxes — casual, rugged, classic, versatile.

That’s another selling point of this sweater, particularly one cut in a classic crewneck style with old-school elbow patches — it works at the office (seriously, your co-workers might dig the elbow patches) and it works at home or on a winter weekend retreat. When you’re shelling out more than $200 for a sweater, it pays to have one you can wear often. That’s just part of the reasoning behind buying the Taylor Stitch Cashmere Elbow Patch Sweater. It’s also helpful that the TS team makes gear that everyone from your father to your grandfather to your brother can appreciate — these are pieces that don’t demand attention, yet still manage to stand out quietly. And since it’s the season of both holiday parties and holiday gifting, I’d urge you to consider splurging on the Taylor Stitch Cashmere Elbow Patch Sweater for yourself or someone else. We haven’t even covered the real Donegal flecks — that’s a unique a fabric as any out there. Are you convinced yet?

Easy answer: Fashion week. But Beau, how’s that work? Again, easy answer. Story time: Although I love my glasses, I used to wear contacts all the time. Sadly, I never got to try Alcon Air Optix Colors, but if I did, I’d be pumped — ‘cuz they’re the brand giving you the chance to vist NYC. They’re hosting a NY Fashion Week sweepstakes now through December 11th. Simply go upload an IG photo of yourself wearing your Air Optix Colors lenses — or, go online and virtually try on one of their 12 new lens colors, then upload a photo of your look (tagging @AIROPTIXCOLORS and using the hashtags #Readytoplay and #Sweepstakes). Oh, this is important: You can find the official rules HEREThe winner will get a trip for two and a VIP experience (none other than backstage passes) at New York Fashion Week: The Shows in February 2019.  That’s all there is to it! Nice.

Again, all you need to do is that virtual try-on, then upload a photo … then you’ve got your chance. I find fashion week to be a fun whirlwind — you’re in the thick of it in NYC, seeing the latest and greatest from boundary-pushing fashion brands. I look forward to it every season, and I think you will, too! Again, you can (and should!) enter with Alcon Air Optix Colors. After you’ve done that, be sure to come back here and enjoy plenty of talk related to choice winter style essentials. Maybe crack open an Anchor Christmas Ale and turn on The National while you’re at it. Happy Friday!

  • In my mind, this post is worth sharing again, especially if you still find yourself searching for that go-anywhere winter jacket. I’m talking, of course, about the Billy Reid Dempsey Jacket, as seen in a post in our Style Pick of the Week series earlier this month.
  • The thermal shirt is the underrated winter layering essential you might not have known you needed. I wrote about the best men’s thermal shirts for The Manual, just in time to help you fight the chill. (Related: Grayers makes a stylish thermal henley you’d do well to buy as we head into winter).
  • My good friend Pat Evans — an accomplished beer writer and a pal from my days at The State News at Michigan State University — has written up a fascinating piece (also at The Manual!) on the German origins of Sapporo beer. A neat read as we get ready to raise a glass this weekend.

That’s bringing us to the end of today’s Friday Read.  Can’t get enough menswear? Read more about the best cold-weather gear to buy now. Or, check out this handy guide on how to wear a henley this year.  Lastly, just because … find a new and improved way to wear your denim shirt for the season.

See Now, Buy Now: The SeaVees Mariner Boots Are Ready for Anything This Winter

SeaVees

Boots that wear like sneakers … and perform like boots? Perfect.

So, these SeaVees Mariner Boots are … a sneaker, but also a boot. And they’re made from suede … but also waterproof. The point is, these stylish SeaVees sneakers are made for nearly anything as move through late fall and into winter, and that’s a fact. In fact, the navy waterproof suede Mariner Boots are only available via our good friends at Huckberry, and that’s something to be applauded in general. The  SeaVees Mariner Boots are inspired by old naval footwear, and it shows when it comes to their durability and functionality. We’ve covered the Mariner Boots here on the blog, but make no mistake, these are another beast entirely. And the great thing is, the  SeaVees Mariner Boots run counter to the argument that you need to put your sneakers away just because the weather gets dicey. A gusseted tongue provides extra water resistance, and the use of extra rubber around the bottom of the shoe also provides added grip and traction against chippy winter weather.SHOP: The  SeaVees Mariner Boots

It also helps that the SeaVees Mariner Boots look pretty great on their own, regardless of their functionality and tough appeal. Antique brass eyelets pair nicely with technical nylon laces for a bit of crossover style potential — you can certainly wear these like regular high-top sneakers (think a rugged Western denim shirt and slim tan chinos), or you can style the SeaVees Mariner Boots more like, well … actual boots. To me, that means you’re wearing them with tough chore pants, a classic henley and a warm fleece jacket to tackle your list of weekend chores. It’s rare to find a pair of high-top sneakers that actually function like boots, and it’s even more rare to find a pair that’ll stand out stylishly at the bar or a holiday party … or even your office (try ’em with a navy cotton blazer, a white Oxford and the Flint and Tinder Stonewashed Jeans). Again, the point is this: The SeaVees Mariner Boots are nearly unbeatable when it comes to casual style, rugged functionality and business casual potential — that’s all there is to it.

#OOTD: What to Wear to Your Favorite Brewery This Winter

If ever you read other series from the blog, like our Friday Read, then you’re surely aware that your humble menswear editor loves a delicious craft beer — in addition to a hearty pour of men’s style essentials. Even better than that? Bringing it all together through the art of exploring a new city or borough, finding a brewery — or whiskey bar  — and sampling the local wares while dressed in style (a la today’s #OOTD!). To me, it’s a whole experience — and one should prepare accordingly, hence the theme of today’s (hopefully fun) look. If you’re not the sort to imbibe in beer, whiskey or wine, then the below ensemble can still work for, say an outdoor hike or art gallery visit. Really, this warm, stylish look works any time you want to rotate a few more off-the-wall pieces (like a Stetson hat!) in place of your favorite essentials.

The underlying point is that from the rugged Faherty Brand CPO Jacket to the classic Taylor Stitch chambray shirt, we’re blending styles you already know with gear you might not have tried (like the easy-wearing Proof Rover Pants). In sum total, the result is an #OOTD that’s pleasingly eye-catching and warm, while also fitting in stylistically with the typically rugged, industrial vibes of a brewery or a distillery. Sounds good to me — how about you? To keep an eye on what I’m sipping — and what I’m wearing — be sure to follow yours truly on Instagram

A mix of stylish & edgy classics (a Stetson hat!) to wear while sampling your favorite beers.

  • The Crucial Layer: Faherty Brand Blanket-Lined CPO, $168.98 — A warm outer layer that gives this outfit some rugged appeal. Easier to with the Stetson hat than a suit, I’d say!
  • The Shirt: Taylor Stitch Everyday Chambray Shirt, $98 — A rugged chambray shirt adds the right blend of casual and classic to this #OOTD.
  • The Classic Hat: Stetson Brazos Hat, $98 — So, this classic Stetson hat is one of the more unique headwear options we’ve featured on the blog … but if you’re at a rugged microbrewery or enjoying an upstate weekend retreat and want to switch it up, go for it.
  • The Pants: Proof Rover Pants, $98 — These pants have it all, from a neutral color palette to performance-ready, moisture-wicking fabric and a slim fit.
  • The Boots: Danner Jack II Brogue Boots in Dark Coffee, $220 –These are the stylish leather boots to wear to a whiskey bar or brewery — they’re sleek, well-made and crafted to break in.
  • The Socks: Danner Midweight Merino Crew Socks, $17 — A performance-minded counterpart to your handsome dress boots, your feet will thank you for that combo.
  • The Stylish Leather Watch: Laco Aachen 42 Watch, $369 — An outfit like this calls for an equally bold, rugged leather watch. The Laco Aachen 42 Watch is a new classic.
  • The Everyday Carry Essential: Taylor Stitch Minimalist Billfold Wallet, $98 — A pleasingly crafted, slim leather wallet that’ll age well on your adventures.

Hopefully, you can see how this #OOTD might work to wear to a brewery or a whiskey bar — it’s casual yet sharp, visually interesting and unique while still being seasonally appropriate. It’s always helpful to build your outfit around a warm outer layer like the rugged Faherty Brand CPO Jacket, while the crisp Taylor Stitch Everyday Chambray Shirt is rugged and perfectly matched for an afternoon or evening sampling delicious craft beer. Perhaps the coolest part of this outfit (in the opinion of your humble editor)? It’s gotta be Stetson Brazos Hat, a truly unique change of pace that adds some old-school flair to this look. Bonus? It just looks like something you’d wear to knock back a few rounds. For mobility and versatile style to move from brewery to brewpub to taco truck (just me?), the Proof Rover Pants are going to wear like jeans and move like chinos. They’ll sit quite nicely atop the surprisingly refined Danner Jack II Brogue Boots, as good as it gets when it comes to the best men’s boots for winter — agreed? And pieces like the classic, truly timeless Laco Aachen 42 Watch are going to stand up to whatever your day has in store — while keeping your flight-tasting session in check. Lastly, since you’ll be on your feet all day, comfortable socks are harder to come by than you’d think — that’s why I vouch for these Danner socks so much. Last but not least, you’re going to need to bring your wallet with you — might as well make it a stylish leather wallet from the great folks at Taylor Stitch, right? So, that’s going to wrap up this #OOTD. The key takeaway here? Heading to a brewery or a cool cocktail bar can be every bit as great a chance to flex your rugged style favorites as more adventure-minded, outdoors-y winter style pursuits. Prepare accordingly, and bring me a beer while you’re at it, will ya?

When you go to your favorite bar or brewery, how do you dress? Let me know on Twitter

OK, that’s all we’ve got today. Which of the above picks was your favorite? I’m a really big fan of the standout Mark Albert Boulevard Boots, personally. Feel free to let me know via The Style Guide Facebook! Thanks for reading.

Style Pick of the Week: Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage

The toughest pair of jeans in your closet? Very nearly.

If there’s one thing I know to be true,it’s that you can always count on our Style Pick of the Week series to set you up with durable, classic gear fit for any occasion — at least, that’s the goal. And in a menswear universe where, it seems, trendiness is the enemy of good taste, it pays to find men’s style essentials that you love, and then wear the crap out of ’em. That’s particularly true if you can manage to find a stylish pair of men’s denim — and that’s where the Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage enter the equation. Now that we’ve truly hit the winter months for most of us, staying warm — and doing so with style and durability in mind — is a tall order. So, bear with me. Swapping out your slim faded denim for a hard-wearing pair of jeans like the Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage only pays dividends in the long run; trust me on that. Made from remarkably durable selvage duck canvas — a tightly woven plainweave fabric — the Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage Jeans are beastly and tough as heck. More like a pair of chore pants than your favorite pair of denim, yet with the same reliable fit and feel.

SHOP: The Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage

Naked & Famous Denim

Classic details like a nicely crafted leather patch help set these jeans apart.

And the fit is really what makes the Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage a wise purchase — we’re talking lean and tailored, yet with room to move. That means these jeans (made in Canada, by the way) are going to sit reliably atop everything from rugged leather lace-up boots to classic chukka boots without missing a beat. That tailored fit also means you can wear the Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage to the office with a navy cotton blazer and a blue chambray shirt — yet, these aren’t a pair of stretch denim that can’t withstand a little winter weather. I’m not saying you should wear the Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage out on a taxing day hike, but if you want to wear these classic jeans to the office, and then to happy hour? They’ll do just fine. They represent an easy way to switch up both your business casual and off-duty ensembles — I think they’d look best with a timeless crewneck sweater and moc toe boots for a weekend coffee date. But, it’s ultimately up to you.  Yessir, the Naked & Famous Slim Fit Duck Canvas Selvage aren’t trendy in the slightest — and that’s a great thing.

In short, let’s lace up our boots and get to work — just like those Original Chippewa Service Boots as seen at the top of the page. At any rate, I’m thankful to be enjoying the holiday weekend with my family in lovely, sunny Orlando. There’s tasty beer, there’s great food & there are visits in store to Disney World.

How did you dress for Thanksgiving? I hope it was stylish, and I hope you’ve got plenty of relaxation and quality time in your future — and yes, some shopping as well. On that note, I’ve rounded up a few sale picks from some of my favorite brands below.  Read on, shop away & be sure to follow along with all the fun, if you feel so inclined, on my Instagram. Cheers!

This Year’s Best Black Friday Deals from HuckberryTaylor StitchBespoke Post & More

What goes better than Thanksgiving weekend and, well, gear from Huckberry?

  • Huckberry: We’ll kick this list off with my pals at the lauded San Francisco-based retailer, who just opened an NYC pop-up — it’s simply fantastic. In the meantime, you can get from 15 up to 60 percent off on the year’s best sellers on the site. And for Cyber Monday, you’re looking at free shipping sitewide and a host of special Cyber Monday-only deals on Huckberry gearSounds great to me. Want to know about some favorites of mine from Huckberry? Here are five.
  • Taylor StitchOK, moving on.  One of my favorite menswear retailers is offering 20 percent off the site for Black Friday, with $20 credit back to be users on your next purchase of $100 or more. Boom. Also, some items marked down to 30 percent off. Gotta love some Taylor Stitch. My current favorite is the handsome Leeward Shirt, pictured above.
  • United By BlueThe sustainable, stylish brand is offering 25 percent off sitewide starting on Black  Friday and running through November 27th, with Cyber Monday also offering 25 percent markdowns, all the way up to 80 percent off.  Both promos offer free shipping on all orders with no minimums, as it were. Read more about the brand via my latest feature for The Manual.

Just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to stylish gear you can get from Bespoke Post.

  • Bespoke Post: Another favorite of mine for the diversity of gear they stock, as shown above.  That includes the well-appointed selection of Bespoke Post boxes in addition to a full shop — you’d do well to get started early on your holiday shopping with the Bespoke Post Holiday Gift Guide. A few of my favorites? Glad you asked.
  • FourlapsNote that for Black Friday AND Cyber Monday, we’re looking at surprise deals to be announced at 12:01am EST both days for the fashion-forward athletic brand — that’s a heck of a way to score some affordable men’s athletic gear. Grab pieces like the Rush Hoodie and Jogger or the brand’s running shortsor Signature Tees.
  • Frank And Oak: Another longtime favorite of the blog (seriously, check out this 2013 Frank And Oak review!), this retailer is back in a big way this winter. Get 30 percent off your purchase through November 25th with the coupon BLACKFRIDAY30, noting that there are some exclusions to include more styles on Cyber Monday. Then, on Cyber Monday, you can also get 30 percent off  your purchase through November 27th, with the coupon CYBERMONDAY30.
  • Blundstone: If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I’ve been loving my rugged Blundstone boots — you can read more about Blundstone in this blog post, too. If you want to snag a pair of your own, note that you can take 15 percent off all purchases through Monday at 3pm EST using the promo code GIVETHX.

Alright, truth be told … that’s but a smattering of the 2018 Black Friday deals you’re apt to find. But to me, they’re all highly shoppable and seriously fun. What are you buying this year? Feel free to check in with me over at the Style Guide Facebook page. OK, back to turkey sandwiches.
