The Friday Read: Game of Thrones, Yellow Rose Outlaw Bourbon & How to Wear Sneakers this Spring

The one and only denim jacket you need for spring and summer, available right now.

I’ll come right out and say it — the one jacket you need to wear this weekend is the Flint and Tinder Type 2 Trucker Jacket. Seriously, it could be the best denim jacket on the market, and that’s really saying something. As sold by Huckberry (and available in the site’s section of Just Landed new gear), it belongs on your back for many spring and summer weekends to come. How could you not love the throwback style and yet modern cool that this thing brings to the table, right? At any rate, I digress — we’ve got work to do. Well, not a ton of work, seeing as it’s the start of a spring weekend and all. After quite a few weeks on the road (including a recent trip to wonderful Portland, Maine as seen on my Instagram), I’ll be hanging back in Brooklyn this weekend, enjoying a favorite cup of coffee and  visiting with an old college friend up from Washington, D.C., and taking in all the city has to offer on the craft brewing front (I think a trip to Five Boroughs Brewing is in the cards). And if I had my way, well, I’d be wearing the Flint and Tinder Typer 2 Trucker Jacket for exploring many a great brewery — but a guy can dream, right? For adding to your own menswear wish list, check out my Friday news selections below. Thanks for reading!

  • OK, so I mentioned the wildly popular show “Game of Thrones” up above in the headline … but I don’t watch the show (sorry!), so why did I call it out? Well, it’s got a menswear-specific tie-in. Namely, the John Varvatos x Game of Thrones collaboration just dropped, and I wrote about it for The Manual! Get even more of your GOT fix by reading up on the full offering.
  • We’re well and truly into spring sneaker season — it’s with that in mind that I put together my own guide recently on the blog covering how to wear sneakers this spring. Can’t go wrong with an entry in our ongoing #OOTD series, can you?
  • If you follow me on Instagram, you know I appreciate a tasty whiskey — in an Old Fashioned or on its own, on the rocks — as much as the next guy. In that regard, it was pretty neat to learn and write about Yellow Rose Outlaw Bourbon, one spirit you should serioulsy consider adding to your bar cart — read about why it’s so unique and essential (hint: It involves Texas corn!) over at GearMoose.Shop Mott & Bow Today! With the weekend nearly upon us, I bet you’re ready to get going. Not so fast, my friends. Stick around for one more second to read about this spring’s must-buy boots (from Taylor Stitch naturally). And while you’re still here, you might want to read about the classic leather watch you need on your wrist … ASAP. OK, that’ll do it from me. Have a good one!

See Now, Buy Now: The ZDA Handball Trainers are the Most Unique Pair of Spring Sneakers on the Market

Sharp sneakers made using real retro design inspiration and construction.

On the hunt for a new pair of spring sneakers? Well then, the ZDA Handball Trainers are the way to go — and I’d wager they’re unlike anything else you’ve got in your spring sneaker rotation, no doubt about it. If you peruse the pages of The Style Guide on the regular, you’ll recognize that we love a good pair of vintage-inspired sneakers — throwback takes on the classic sneaker are all the rage right now, but some brands are doing it better than others. Case in point: The ZDA Handball Trainers, modeled after a real pair of Czechoslovakian sneakers (that spelling is a doozy) are some of the best sneakers to buy for spring and summer, what with their investment-level good looks and high-qualiity construction. The ZDA brand lay dormant for a number of years, but in 2016, a Japanese designer brought ’em back to life to make these stylish vintage sneakers — and we should all be glad the brand is back. It gets better, though: The ZDA Handball Trainers are made in Slovakia on the same last and in the same factory that first produced them … how wild is that!?

SHOP: The ZDA Handball Trainers

Yet another color option of these stylish, classic vintage sneakers.

Now, what’s the argument for picking up a pair of sneakers like the ZDA Handball Trainers, given that they could feasibly be worn for, well, actual handball? They’re a classic sneaker option, as ready to wear with slim light wash denim and a short-sleeve henley as they are with a garment-dyed Oxford shirt and classic tan chinos. The low profile also means you could feasibly wear the ZDA Handball Trainers to your laidback office with a navy cotton blazer, those same slim tan chinos, and perhaps a classic white polo. That’s the thing about a pair of vintage sneakers — they go with anything and everything, just like they were originally made to be worn. Make no mistake, the ZDA Handball Trainers look like nothing else in your closet, and that’s the perfect way to go about it.

#OOTD: The Best Way to Wear a Classic T-Shirt for Spring and Beyond

There’s a certain look that, to me epitomizes spring style. It starts with, of course, a classic T-shirt, and it builds from there. And as luck would have it, the perfect spring tee in question is the never-not-stylish Flint and Tinder Slub Pocket Tee. It’s the ideal tee to keep in mind when you just want to throw on a simple-yet-quality T-shirt and head out the door (complemented by other men’s style essentials, of course). In this case, we’re pairing up a rugged military shirt from a newly relaunched brand — that’d be Alex Mill — with versatile travel pants and, naturally, a pair of classic spring sneakers. The great thing about building from the ground up with something as simple and straightforward — yet stylish — as a slim pocket T-shirt is that it provides a great canvas from which to build your new favorite spring weekend outfit. It’s comfortable and breathable during the day — from the coffee shop to the park and back — and it cleans up come sundown and a round of evening cocktails (namely, when layered with an Alex Mill military shirt). All of this is to say: You’ve got everything you need to look great this spring when it comes to the below #OOTD.

Layer your classic T-shirt with a lightweight-yet-rugged military shirt. That’s your new spring uniform.

  • The Stylish Spring Shirt: Alex Mill Garment-Dyed Field Shirt, $95 — Perfect for lightweight layering — especially in early April — this Alex Mill shirt from the newly relaunched brand epitomizes easygoing, modern menswear.
  • The Classic Tee: Flint and Tinder Slub Pocket Tee, $29 or 3 for $75 — Take it from me: You should pick up at least one Flint and Tinder Slub Pocket Tee, or again, 3 for $75It’s potentially the best pocket tee to buy now.
  • The Pants: Proof Nomad Pants, $98 — Made to move and go anywhere, the Proof Nomad Pants just so happen to be made from breathable, durable Japanese twill with two-way stretch — perhaps the perfect travel pants.
  • The Sneakers: ZDA Handball Trainers, $230 — An utterly unique pair of classic spring sneakers fit for wearing in casual, laidback fashion this spring.
  • The Belt: Line of Trade Veg-Tanned Leather Belt, $65 — You’re going to need a stylish leather belt for each and every outfit — including this one.
  • The Grooming Upgrade: Ranger Station Birch Bark Cologne, $69.98 — Spring is a nice time to work a new, fresh scent into your grooming routine — the Ranger Station Birch Bark Cologne is the one to buy.
  • The Everday Carry Essential: Bexar Goods Co. Classic 4 Billfold, $145 — We’re all about the stylish accessories that make a big difference, like this slim leather wallet from Bexar Goods Co.
  • The Spring Essential: Alex Mill Canvas Field Cap, $40 — Just as with its rugged-yet-versatile Field Shirt, the Alex Mill Canvas Field Cap is ideal for throwing on as you head out the door on a weekend coffee run or backyard brewpub visit. Casual style to a “T.”

I don’t know about you, but looking at this outfit gets me more than ready for spring (who wants an iced coffee, ehh?). Again, the beauty of starting an outfit with potentially the best pocket tee on the market is that you can layer it with darn near anything you want — a classic Alex Mill military shirt included. The nature of the humble-yet-essential pocket tee also makes it easy to wear it with the Proof Nomad Pants for a bit of go-anywhere style — the same can be said for the unique-yet-office-friendly ZDA Handball Trainers,  made to deliver all-day comfort and visual interest. Naturally, a stylish leather belt is also a must, as is a slim leather wallet— the details really do make all the difference. That’s why we’re also ditching the standard athletic logo cap for a spring-ready canvas cap from Alex Mill — laidback and subtly stylish is the name of the game, all day long. And to take this outfit from good to great, finish things off with a spritz of the Ranger Station Birch Bark Cologne— you’ll be the best-dressed, and best-smelling, guy at the bar. If you take one thing from today’s post, it’s that you should never overlook the a classic T-shirt — it can work for you in as many ways as you let it. Let me know on Twitter how you’re wearing your T-shirt this spring. Thanks for reading!

Style Pick of the Week: Billy Reid Mini Waffle Henley

The perfect spring henley? Well, it’s certainly one of the best henleys this season.

Not so fast: Don’t store your long-sleeve henleys just yet. In fact, if I were you, I’d consider adding another option to your arsenal of stylish spring layers: The Billy Reid Mini Waffle Henley is one of the best men’s henleys to buy now, and that’s just a fact. It’s no less than a classic henley option from one of my favorite menswear brands, one that delivers luxurious takes on men’s style staples — that includes the coveted Billy Reid Bond Peacoat and now, the Billy Reid Mini Waffle Henley. What’s the case for keeping a henley on hand as the temperature heats up? Well, my friends, the Billy Reid Mini Waffle Henley is made witha  waffle thermal fabric that should breath nicely and layer easily without being too suffocating. In fact, I’d even pair the Billy Reid Mini Waffle Henley with the seriously cool, rugged Billy Reid Denim Shirt for easygoing spring style. The henley really can be your best friend when it comes to spring layering, and that’s a fact.

It starts with the washed-out, spring-friendly Terracotta color of the Billy Reid Mini Waffle Henley — this is the perfect complement to slim light wash denim and classic chukka boots for when it’s too warm for a jacket, but slated to get a bit breezy later. You could even layer the Billy Reid Mini Waffle Henley underneath a stylish zip hoodie (as seen in this post) for an early morning weekend coffee run or a day of travel. And to be sure, you can absolutely wear the Billy Reid Mini Waffle Henley with a navy cotton blazer — paired up with tan chinos and leather loafers — for some office-ready style on an easygoing spring day.

A nicely textured henley that’ll layer up with ease.

And if you’re hesitant about diving headfirst into the henley game with one that’s more than $100? Just know that the Billy Reid Mini Waffle Henley should consistently deliver on quality given what the Billy Reid brand has going for it — the lauded American designer uses prime attention to detail in all facets of the menswear game. So, this isn’t a flimsy henley from a fast-fashion brand … you can be sure of that. From the light spring color to the easy wearability, it should become a new go-to with everything from off-white jeans and tan suede chukkas to indigo denim and a light chambray shirt — talk about essential spring style, right?

The Friday Read: Spring Office Style, The Best Men’s Ties & New Seasonal Style Tips

Your new favorite pants for spring — learn why below.

Huckberry might have said it best: “If there’s one thing you should never leave home without, it’s your pants.” I believe that to be quite true, and if you agree — which you should! — then it’s time to start this Friday with the Flint and Tinder 365 Pants. They’re some of the best men’s pants for spring, they’re a big favorite of mine, and they’re back and better than ever for a new season. Namely, the Flint and Tinder 365 Pants are all about fit this time around. Go with a roomier (but not baggy) Straight Fit, or keep things dialed in nicely with the Slim Fit iteration, which leans trim but doesn’t run too tight. I personally love the Olive colorway of the Flint and Tinder 365 Pants which you might have seen on my Instagram! So, that’s starting the weekend out nicely, I think. I wore a pair throughout the week this past week — and they proved really comfortable as I cruised around lovely Portland, Maine! You might have followed that trip on my Instagram, but it was quite the treat to check out some amazing craft beer breweries (Allagash Brewing and Austin Street Brewing come to mind!), capped off with a lovely stay at the excellent, sustainable Mercury Inn. See you soon, Portland!

What happens to be on your weekend agenda? I’m looking forward to indulging in one of my passions — no, not craft beer … James Bond! I’ll be heading to the James Bond Spyscape in NYC here on Saturday, as fitting a stop as any while we await more news on James Bond 25 (tentatively titled “Eclipse” … or is it?). Either way, I really can’t wait! Again, be sure to follow my Instagram to keep up with all the fun. As for the rest of the weekend? Well, let’s get it going with the lowdown on all the new men’s style essentials you need for spring — along with my required reading picks of the week, of course.

  • Whenever I’m in doubt, I usually turn to the style-forward purveyors at Esquire to set me straight, in matters ranging from business casual style to seasonal upgrades. In this case, the site recently put together a guide on what to wear to work this spring — no better place to get your spring office style than the Esquire team, in my mind.
  • If you follow me on Instagram, perhaps you’re aware that, unfortunately, I don’t wear a tie too often — part personal preference, part the nature of my casual office. However, if I had to wear a tie on the daily (maybe one day!), I’d wear one of my picks for the best ties for men, as I rounded up recently at The Manual. Cheers!
  • Let’s take it back a couple weeks to this list of all the best new spring style essentials — how many of them have you picked up? From stylish shirting to tough outerwear, does it get any better? Answer: Nope, no it doesn’t! Read the full rundown here.

Let’s cover off on one last item of business before the weekend, shall we? Before you go, read all about my guide to dressing for spring rain. OK, that’s it from me! Cheers to the weekend!

You’re definitely in luck, seeing as today’s See Now, Buy Now series entry — the Banks Journal Lumber Jacket as sold by our stylish friends at Bespoke Post — fits the bill on both fronts. And for the ongoing transition into spring, versatile and adaptable style — especially when it comes to your rotation of spring jackets — is critical. So, again … enter the Banks Journal Lumber Jacket, featuring a 100 percent brushed cotton flannel construction on side two (as seen below), and an easy-to-layer wool-poly blend in a handsome golden color on side one. Bespoke Post

Side two of this functional, handsome jacket.

Your author’s personal favorite when it comes to the Banks Journal Lumber Jacket is side one — the rich golden color option, finished off with side handwarmer pockets and two chest button-snap pockets for your everyday carry essentials. There’s something that just feels right about this jacket, especially when paired up with, say, a rugged short-sleeve henley and grey chinos — plus vintage-inspired sneakers for spring. Of course, either side is stylish and versatile — the plaid side of the Banks Journal Lumber Jacket, made with brushed cotton flannel, is a perfect way to combat chilly spring evenings or a breezy early morning commute, especially when worn with a classic dark indigo shirt and slim faded denim. The point is, the Banks Journal Lumber Jacket is clean, classic and understated the whole way through (and not in a bad way). Which side of the Banks Journal Lumber Jacket is your favorite? And how would you wear it? Head over to The Style Guide Facebook page and let me know!

#OOTD: How to Wear Your New Favorite Vintage Sneakers for Spring

Do you have a favorite pair of sneakers in your closet? A pair of stylish sneakers to consistently turn toward in a multitude of spring style situations? Weekend brunch, brewery visits, hours-long park strolls — and of course, days at the office aplenty — can all be tackled with the stylish spring sneakers (and the #OOTD) in question. It’s all about versatility and comfort when it comes to Beckett Simonon’s Morgen Trainers, and they’re complemented handsomely by a rugged chore jacket (via Everlane), a stylish denim shirt from Billy Reid and slim chinos (sold by Huckberry, of course). The building blocks here can really take you anywhere, with the ability to be mixed and matched with ease. The resulting #OOTD can go to the office on a casual Friday, or out to your favorite brewery, and essentially anywhere in between.

And the beauty of this #OOTD is that you can remove layers as needed through shifting spring weather. Specifically, the Everlane Chore Jacket (a new personal favorite) can even double as a cool blazer replacement if need be. And again, it all starts from the ground up with your new favorite pair of sneakers from Beckett Simonon. Cheers to spring!

Mixing up your spring sneakers with touches both rugged and casual — and from some of your favorite brands.

We’ve told you in the past that the best ensembles start from the ground up, right? In this case, that involves Beckett Simonon’s Morgen Trainers, a heck of a stylish, comfortable and premium pair of sneakers that tie each and every outfit together handsomely. In this case, the outfit only gets better and better the more you look at it (I think so, at least). That is to say, a rugged chore jacket from Everlane adds versatile utility and style, especially when layered over both a stylish denim shirt from Billy Reid and a rugged henley from Flint and Tinder. Those three layers should have you ready for whatever comes your way this spring, from a light breeze to a sudden drop in temperature. And in matters of style, this entire combo works, too — it’s fit for a night at a gastropub or a round of beers at a brewery, or a day at the office. It’s also tied together by slim chinos that sit nicely atop the vintage trainers from Beckett Simonon— you see, it’s all tied together. It should also go without saying that the right #OOTD is also finished off with the right accessories, including a stylish leather watch and an equally stylish leather belt (both investment-level pieces in their own right). Richly crafted indigo socks from Anonymousism provide a dash of comfort and style, too. When worn all together, this #OOTD is darn near unbeatable — and again, it all comes back down to the stylish sneakers you’ve got on your feet. Happy spring, folks!

The List: Shop the Best New Men’s Style and Lifestyle Gear, from Denim to Meal Prep Kits

A unique offering to add into your purchasing consideration set.

We’re kicking things off a little differently today on the blog — while we’ll still be telling you all about the men’s style essentials to buy, we’re talking about what you should be cooking instead. In this case, we’re going to tell you about Sun Basket Meal Plans, an easy, fresh way to upgrade what you’re putting on your table every day. Making a fresh, delicious meal really is easy with these meal plans, as I’ve found out — and I’m certainly no gourmand. That being said, putting a bit more attention into the preparation of your food isn’t all that different than paying attention to the brands you shop and wear. With all that being said, let’s start this post off right — happy cooking (and shopping)!

Sun Basket Meal Plans — Starting at $71.94 for 3 Recipes/Week

Just one of the many ways in which Sun Basket Meal Plans can deliver excellent, quality meals on the daily.

Zodiac Grandville Watch — $495

A dependable, durable watch for any occasion.

Let’s get right back into menswear, shall we? After all, as you meal-plan with Sun Basket, you’re going to want to stay on time, right? The Zodiac Grandville Watch is a handsome, classic timepiece to wear with everything from slim faded denim and a white tee to a navy cotton suit.

Everlane Cotton Crew in Goldenrod — $20

A classic tee made with sustainability and style in mind.

With spring weather starting to roll in now — finally — a classic cotton tee is an essential to wear on its own (with slim grey chinos) or layered underneath a light wash denim jacket. The fact that this Everlane cotton tee is made with transparency and sustainability is also a bonus — and hey, it’s only $20.
Helm Boots Pablo Boots — $399

Sleek spring boots you didn’t know you needed.

Your rotation of stylish spring footwear could use a shot in the arm (the foot?). While it’s tough to argue with the versatility of, say, classic chukka boots, the Helm Boots Pablo Boots are an entirely unique, seriously cool pair of spring boots.
Madewell Men’s Sidewalk Low-Top Sneakers in Canvas — $68

A new favorite pair of spring sneakers, easily.

Clean, classic, made with tough canvas and done up in a white-gum rubber combo — that’s what you’re getting with the first-ever set of sneakers from Madewell Men’s (the full line launched last fall & was covered by yours truly on The Manual).
Deus Ex Machina Looper Cap — $28

The cool, laidback cap you’ll get plenty of wear out of on spring weekends.

Maybe it’s the return of spring weather, maybe it’s my inclination toward sitting on brewery patios, but the Deus Ex Machina Looper Cap could be just the perfect ballcap for spring and summer, what with its easygoing look and feel.
Flint and Tinder Supima AirKnit Long-Sleeve Polo — $68

Another stylish spring layer to add to your shoppping list now.

Spring layering is about more than just T-shirts and henleys (although we’ve got those for you, too). No sir, a stylish long-sleeve polo — like this one from Flint and Tinder — can prove to be a unique change of pace on a breezy day.
UNTUCKit Jamet Short-Sleeve Henley — $49

A performance-minded henley made for spring layering (or wearing on its own).

Super soft and cut with every bit the same quality and fit as UNTUCKit’s dress shirts (seriously, try one out sometime), the Jamet Short-Sleeve Henley is the rugged henley you need for every outdoor craft beer festival or concert this spring and summer.
Red Wing Heritage Weekender Chukka — $230

As essential a pair of chukka boots as you’re apt to find.

Rugged chukka boots — especially a pair from Red Wing Heritage — belong on your feet this spring, no doubt about it. This pair in particular has long been a favorite of the blog. And the Weekender Chukka wears especially well with light wash denim and a slim henley.
Everlane Chore Jacket in Pine — $88

A well-made chore jacket at an affordable price? Sign me up.

Everlane strikes again. What could be better than an affordable, durable chore jacket? Especially one from Everlane? For easygoing-yet-sharp spring layering, there’s not much that tops this radically transparent, seriously stylish spring jacket. Made with 100 percent cotton twill, this is the perfect weekend layer to wear with a rugged henley and slim indigo denim.
Relwen Micro-Thermo Popover — $168

A performance-minded popover that’s perfect for spring travel.

If you haven’t caught on by now, we’re all  about getting you layered up for spring the right way. Specifically, the Relwen Micro-Thermo Popover is casual, yet performance-ready, made for breezy spring mornings.
WP Standard Canvas Travel Tote — $289

The go-anywhere bag that’ll carry you through spring.

When winter finally starts to thaw out, I’d wager it’s time to gear up and hit the road — the WP Standard Canvas Travel Tote is potentially the perfect spring travel bag.

Outerknown S.E.A. Shirt in Pacific Treeline Stripe — $88

A sustainably made shirt that’s perfect for easygoing spring style.

You know Outerknown for the brand’s versatile, modern-yet-easygoing design and a paramount focus on sustainability. Take the S.E.A. Shirt (that stands for “Social & Environmental Accountability”). That means this subtly stylish shirt is made with midweight organic cotton, plus a cool stripe pattern and mother-of-pearl buttons. Perfect for wearing with light wash denim this spring. Speaking of …
Everlane Slim Denim in Mid Blue Wash — $68

Utterly classic light wash denim for spring from Everlane.

Yes, let’s make it three-for-three with men’s style essentials from Everlane. This pair of essential slim jeans feature all the right attributes, from the agreeable fit to the rich Mid Blue Wash (perfect for spring & summer) to the terrific price. Should you wear your Everlane chore jacket, pocket tee & denim all at once? I don’t see why not!
OK, so that was likely a lot to digest today in terms of spring style essentials, ehh? From slim Everlane denim to the perfect spring travel bag (my personal favorite) and easygoing spring shirting, there’s something for every taste up above — including Sun Basket Meal Plans! What do you think of today’s picks? Drop me a note in the comments below!

Style Pick of the Week: Flint and Tinder Cool Chinos

Breezy, versatile chinos in a modern cut — can’t ask for much more than that for spring.

What pair of essential men’s pants belongs on your legs and in your closet this spring? That’s quite easy — the Flint and Tinder Cool Chinos, naturally. After all, every guy needs a stylish pair of chinos in his wardrobe to kick off a breezy, warm new season, and the Flint and Tinder Cool Chinos check all the right boxes. Classic style? Check. A slim-but-not-too-slim fit? Check. The dependability that comes with gear made and sold by Huckberry? Triple-check on that one. And luckily, Flint and Tinder has made the choice easy this spring when it comes time to decide on the best men’s chinos to buy this very instant. It all starts with the use of high-twist cotton, a weave that gives these slim chinos breathability and mobility — these aren’t the thick cotton twill chinos that, while classic, can prove quite hard to get around in. No sir, the Flint and Tinder Cool Chinos get the job done quite nicely, and they clock in at under $100, too. Throw in the fact that they’re made in America, and you’re looking at your new favorite pair of chinos. But what else makes ’em so great?

The Olive color of the Flint and Tinder Cool Chinos is particularly sharp, right? Right.

As we said before, the Flint and Tinder Cool Chinos just check all the right boxes, right on down to the customary Flint and Tinder shotgun shell button and zip fly. Those design touches are in keeping in line with what Flint and Tinder does so well — modern classics, done in a way that menswear lovers (new and old) can appreciate. Again, the Flint and Tinder Cool Chinos live up to that promise admirably, with the type of style that works just as well with a blue chambray shirt and classic chukka boots as it does with crisp white tee and your favorite vintage sneakers (preferably from Huckberry, too). And it goes without saying that you’ve got your pick of versatile color options when it comes to the Flint and Tinder Cool Chinos, all designed to give you plenty of styling potential.  Try out the slim tan chinos with an indigo denim jacket and a white short-sleeve henley, or pair the classic olive chinos with a heather grey tee and stylish brown leather brogues. After that, you’re off to the races. Or at least, you’re off to wherever it is you need to go, dressed in sharp, classic style.
