The List: Shop This Week’s Best New Gear Picks for Men

Throw on these rugged gloves and get prepped for some post-holiday work.

The start of a new week calls for the best gear of the season, especially now that we’ve nearly closed out 2018 (can you believe it!?) and have our eyes on the prize: 2019. With that, I want to wish y’all loyal Style Guide readers a very Merry Christmas (and a warm, stylish Christmas Eve). I think you’ll find this week’s men’s style essentials run the gamut, from rugged leather gloves to handsome leather boots, all designed to carry you through the end of the year and into New Year’s Eve in style. We’re even recommending a whiskey for your New Year’s Eve party. Without further ado, here we go.

Give’r 4-Season Gloves with Wax Coating — $140

Durable leather gloves made for work and weekend exploration.

These no-nonsense, tough leather work gloves are ready for your toughest winter chores, from hauling brush to chopping firewood. The rest of the time? Wear ’em with the Flint and Tinder Waxed Trucker to head to the bar.
Faherty Brand Atmosphere Shirt Jacket — $198
Faherty Brand

Technical and yet stylish is what you’re getting with this shirt jacket.

The good folks at Faherty Brand continue to up the ante when it comes to gear you can wear … just about anywhere. Made with water-resistant nylon, the Atmosphere Shirt Jacket is perfect to wear if you live in a climate where winter isn’t so harsh (say, on the California coast?)
Viberg Service Boots (Huckberry Exclusive) — $699
Viberg

Exceptional leather boots that just won’t let you down.

If there’s one thing I know to be true — and I don’t know much — it’s that these rugged boots from Viberg are stellar, dependable & ready for the office and a casual weekend alike.
Ratio Eight Coffee Maker w/ Thermal Carafe & Coffee Cups — $696

One way to invest in making the best cup of coffee you’ll ever have.

Especially here in Brooklyn, I’m always on the hunt for a caffeine fix, but if I didn’t want to leave my apartment, I’d pick up the incredibly well-designed, simply beautiful Ratio Eight coffee maker. It could maybe help you make the best cup of coffee you’ll ever have.
Ace Rivington Athletic Taper Denim — $200

Haven’t tried out Ace Rivington denim? Change that now.

If you prefer denim that’s tailored but not skin-tight, a pair of classic men’s blue jeans that fit nicely and work anywhere, go with this pair. They’re an investment, but the rich indigo color and quality Italian cotton pay off.

Taylor Stitch Heavy Bag Waffle Henley in Heather Grey — $78

A thick, warm henley built to take on the toughest winter style challenges.

Made from upcycled cotton in a thick waffle knit, this rugged men’s henley from Taylor Stitch is warm & cozy, plus it’s easy to layer with flannel shirting or a warm winter parka.
Bespoke Post Tamed Box — $45 (When Signing Up for Bespoke Post)
Bespoke Post

The right grooming essentials at the right price.

Keeping your mane in check through the winter months is critical, no matter how gnarly it gets out there. The Bespoke Post Tamed Box features both men’s grooming essentials and small, considered details (like a straight razor) for a perfect shave.

Thursday Boots Wingtip Boots in Caramel — $220

Another pair of must-have brown boots, made for dressier occasions.

I’ve previously tested out the Wingtip Boots in Waterproof Suede from Thursday Boots, but these handsom leather boots in a rich shade of Caramel are absolutely too good to pass up. Wear them as often as you can this winter — they can handle it.
WP Standard Military Duffel — $339
WP Standard

A beautifully crafted duffel that’ll only age more nicely with time.

You really can turn to timeless military silhouettes for rugged gear that works for today’s modern man — like this absurdly beautiful, surprisingly affordable rugged leather duffel from WP Standard (one of my favorite brands).
Zodiac Grandville Watch — $495

A dressy take on the rugged Zodiac watch.

You surely know Zodiac for the brand’s exceptional Super Sea Wolf Watch, but how about the Zodiac Grandville Watch? It’s a classic leather dress watch with all the functionality you need for winter travel and the office.
Bridge & Burn Fielding Denim Cotton Overshirt — $188

The type of cotton overshirt you’re going to want to wear over a classic T-shirt or a warm thermal shirt.

When you find a brand that makes rugged gear that resists changing trends, you stick with ’em. I’ve certainly found that to be the case with my friends at Portland’s own Bridge & Burn. The Fielding Denim Cotton Overshirt is the perfect mid-layer atop a classic henley.
Michter’s US 1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon — Price Varies

Made to exacting specifications — perfect for New Year’s Eve, for yourself or your host.

Planning a New Year’s Eve party (responsibly)? Hosting a second (or third) Christmas? Want to impress your guests with a rich, warming bourbon that harkens back to the first whiskey produced by this lauded brand? Track down some Michter’s — I’ve been taste-testing (ahem) over these past few weeks, and can’t say enough about the rich caramel and vanilla notes.
Faherty Brand Fair Isle Crew in Mixed Indigo — $248
Faherty Brand

Indigo gives this crewneck a uniquely rich pattern.

We’re back at it with more stylish gear from Faherty Brand, this time featuring a simply unbeatable classic indigo crewneck in a neat Fair Isle print. Perfect for winter weekends upstate … or anywhere, really.
PILLBOX Bat Co. “Join or Die” Bat — $245

Something a little more unique to hang on the wall of your home or office.

Is this vintage baseball bat from PILLBOX Bat Co. — featuring some seriously cool artwork — completely necessary for your home, apartment or office? Not entirely. Is it a neat last-minute gift? Assuredly.
Today’s post on the best men’s style essentials to end this month really did have it all, didn’t it? At least, I hope that’s what you thought. What was your favorite gear pick? I can never resist the chance to feature some tough Viberg leather boots. With all that being said, have a great rest of your holiday and thanks for reading!

Style Pick of the Week: O.N.S. Clothing Dominic Bomber

A new classic — highly stylish and functional.

On the hunt for one of the best men’s jackets for winter? Search no more, because I’d wager I found it. And that jacket, my friends, would be the O.N.S Clothing Dominic Bomber, a rugged, durable & simply cool old-school jacket you can wear with nearly anything. It channels the type of throwback style born of much-needed functionality; it’s easy to see the O.N.S Clothing Dominic Bomber being worn on the deck of a ship or on the chilly coast during a rainstorm. That’s how the brand approaches designig its gear, and that’s great news for all of us who could use a wardrobe upgrade. Right? In my mind, the O.N.S Clothing Dominic Bomber is absolutely one of the the best men’s jackets your money can buy. Make no mistake, it’s an investment at $428, but your wardrobe will be all the better for it. Made from half-lambswool and half-nylon, it’s a classic cut that wears nicely with all manner of men’s style essentials, including slim tan chinos and a timeless chambray shirt. The faux shearling collar is also a badass style touch that’ll keep you warm no matter how chilly it gets, too. Can it get better? Actually, yes.

SHOP: The O.N.S Clothing Dominic Bomber

This coat really is the sort of style you just don’t see anymore, and that makes it all the better to wear with equally classic pieces like a rugged henley and your favorite pair of slim jeans. The quilted lining should also offer even more protection from the cold — make no mistake, the O.N.S Clothing Dominic Bomber has a lot going for it. The Dark Green color is also uniquely rich and distinctive, made to stand out stylishly in the grey depths of winter. It’s a sharp substitute for a blazer, and would wear nicely with a crisp Oxford shirt and slim wool trousers — just add handsome leather boots, and you’re set for the office holiday party or a tailored weekend happy hour.  How’s that for one of the best men’s jackets? Not bad at all, if you ask me. Again, it’s an investment at more than $400, but the O.N.S Clothing Dominic Bomber is going to give you returns in spades — to say the least. Again, it’s a jacket you can wear to channel more rugged style (think chore pants, a thermal shirt and the Huckberry Duck Boots) or a tailored look (a chambray dress shirt and a knit tie). Still not sold? Once you try this jacket, you will be.

See Now, Buy Now: The Faherty Brand Atmosphere Jacket Is Your Go-To Winter Travel Layer

The ideal outer layer for comfort and functionality as you travel.

If you’re anything like me, maybe you’re hitting the road for winter travel soon (we’ve got Christmas next week, after all!). And maybe you’re wondering how to dress for winter travel? Well, I think I’ve got part of that equation solved for you — The Faherty Brand Atmosphere Jacket belongs on your top half for your next trip. The great thing about gear from Faherty Brand is that it’s at once easygoing yet functional, the perfect type of gear to grab and go as you dash off to the airport or to catch a train (or a bus, or an automobile?). And the Atmosphere Jacket is, helpfully, a two-for-one deal — much like the Faherty Brand Bondi Jacket, as featured recently on the blog. That kind of versatility can’t be topped.

Faherty Brand review

Layer up for winter travel with this Faherty Brand jacket.

That is to say, the Atmosphere Jacket wears like both a shirt and, well, a jacket, from the easy-to-layer fit to the 100 percent nylon construction. It’s a lightweight layer for the airport that’ll also insulate you from winter’s chill outside — that’s a major positive. The Faherty Brand Atmosphere Jacket uses channel quilting for extra warmth, too. In short: Throw on the Faherty Brand Atmosphere Jacket with a crisp white T-shirt and perfectly faded jeans for your next long flight. But Beau, isn’t it acceptable to wear slouchy sweats and a baggy hoodie to travel? Not so fast, my friend.

SHOP: The Faherty Brand Atmosphere Jacket

No sir, the Faherty Brand Atmosphere Jacket (also available in Black and Navy) is exactly the travel style upgrade you need to make, regardless of where your plans might lead. While others are trying to just catch their connecting flight, wearing a warm & stylish layer like the Atmosphere Jacket might help you take on the day with a bit more polish. It’s as easy as throwing on a great coat — like the Atmosphere Jacket — and then upgrading your bottom half (again, perfectly faded jeans are the way to go). Plus, the Atmosphere Jacket  features custom rubberized Faherty snap buttons and two front chest pockets for durability — and the perfect place to store your everyday carry essentials going through security! Bingo. And on chilly winter mornings when you get to your destination? Throw on the Faherty Brand Atmosphere Jacket and pair it with slim, tailored sweatpants — and maybe the Huckberry Duck Boots — to grab a weekend coffee.

How do you dress for winter travel? Is this shirt jacket on your list?

#OOTD: How to Dress for a Casual Christmas This Year

Folks, it’s coming right up — we’re talking, of course, about Christmas. Perhaps you’ve made it through the holiday party gauntlet and are winding things down to enjoy the day at home … but I doubt it. No sir, this time of year calls for nothing but the best men’s style essentials, even if you’re simply relaxing with a small group of family or friends at home or on the road. And that’s where today’s #OOTD enters the fray. Just like dressing for a stylish winter weekend, even time off the clock calls for gear that’s warm, functional and … heck, just plain fun. So, that’s what we’re going with today. Whether you’re hosting a laidback dinner party, powering through a family game night or heading out for a Christmas round at your favorite brewery, this ensemble nods toward the season without forcing you to put on an ugly sweater. In fact, the stylish Faherty Brand cardigan pictured below is just the opposite. That’s also the case with the classic Faherty Brand flannel shirt that’s part of this look, too. The same can be said for the rest of our picks, right on down to the rugged leather boots and a slim leather wallet to help you get around with ease. Again, it’s all about staying polished and looking your best — Christmas is a special occasion, after all. To check out more holiday style suggestions, read our #OOTD series. Happy holidays!

Warm, comfortable and stylish layers will never steer you wrong, even if you’re only spending the evening at home with your significant other — that’s where Faherty Brand comes in. A rugged cotton cardigan is easy to layer over a classic flannel shirt, and that combo is tied together nicely with slim Flint and Tinder jeans featuring White Oak denim. Crisp blue denim is a reliable style option in any season, let alone the holidays — the same can be said for the stylish leather boots we’ve got on tap from Thursday Boots. Style Pick of the Week: Billy Reid Bond Peacoat

Billy Reid Bond Peacoat

The best peacoat on the market? There’s certainly nothing else like it.

Folks, there’s just no other way to look at it: The Billy Reid Bond Peacoat is an iconic jacket you need in your wardrobe this winter. Oh, and it’s worn by Mr. James Bond himself (as seen above). That’s it. That’s all there is to it. And if this classic peacoat wasn’t so well-made and uniquely stylish, that might be the end of this post. But trust me, there’s so much more to say about the exceptional Bond Peacoat from lauded American menswear designer Billy Reid. It’s great enough that it received prominent placement in the 2012 James Bond film “Skyfall” — of cours. The popularity of this coat (actually named for Bond Street in Manhattan) has only grown since then. Or is “legend” a more fitting word than “popularity”? At any rate, you can currently pick it up via the brand’s Web site, or via Huckberry — all the better, seeing as Huckberry is truly one of my favorite online shops for the stylish guy (that’s you!). That’s really just the start of what makes this coat so great. Now, we’ll be telling you all about how to wear this stylish peacoat in our #OOTD series in the coming days, but for now, let’s get down to business — the Bond Peacoat delivers in matters of style AND functionality, starting with the extremely warm double-woven melton wool construction. That alone makes it worth the *gulp* nearly-$700 price tag.

SHOP: The Billy Reid Bond Peacoat

It’s really not too often — try never — that you find a peacoat that so perfectly embodies style that’s suited for a secret agent and for the everyman, yet that’s just what the Billy Reid Bond Peacoat offers. Take the crisp navy color, as worn by naval servicemen decades ago. Heck, that color and this silhouette alone are enough to add class to any outfit.

Bond Peacoat

A slim, tailored peacoat that shot to prominence thanks to a certain secret agent.

Add in small, seriously premium touches — including a leather-reinforced collar and horn buttons — and you’re looking at much more than your average peacoat. It’s also made in Italy, putting the Billy Reid Bond Peacoat a cut above the rest. Side slash hand warmer pockets and front flap pockets make this coat one that’s not just for show; use them to stow your everyday carry essentials on chilly winter days. It’s crisply cut, making it the ideal complement to tailored wool trousers and rugged leather boots. It’s also a nice way to stay warm in transit to the office or your holiday party — if I were you, I’d wear it over a classic chambray shirt and slim tan chinos, paired up with durable desert boots (read more about all those men’s style essentials elsewhere on the site). Again, you’re going to have to invest in the Billy Reid Bond Peacoat, but I can nearly guarantee it’ll be the last peacoat you buy. OK, that’s it. That’s the end of this post. Get out there and pick it up while you still can!

  • Sometimes, all you need to make your outfit go from good to great is a pair of the best men’s leather boots — like the CAT Footwear Thinsulate Boots, as I covered for GearMoose. Now, get out there and get to work.
  • To me, it’s more than worth bringing this crucial post to your attention again. Namely, I recently wrote about how to get a discount on Outerknown menswear — in this piece on men’s style essentials, in fact. The skinny: Just use the code STYLEGUIDE25 to get 25 percent off full-priced gear at Outerknown. That’s it! Happy shopping.
  • In the way of rugged winter gear, it’s also worth considering this men’s style guide I wrote for The Manual covering my favorite fall picks from Filson. Plenty of choices for everyone, right?

See Now, Buy Now: The Taylor Stitch California Shirt Deserves A Space In Your Closet for the Holidays

Taylor Stitch

The timeless California Shirt, done up in a winter-friendly brushed cotton. Holidays, here we come.

Ready or not, the holidays are … essentially just days away. How are you dressing? And what are you gifting? As we’ve talked about this week, you might want to use this time to kill two birds with one stone, as they say. In my estimation, that means picking up a stylish Taylor Stitch shirt for yourself … and perhaps for someone else, too.  Yes, we’re back at it again with the lauded California-based menswear brand, makers of plenty of classic men’s shirts — and the one you see at the top of the page in particular. That shirt, my friends, would be the remarkable Taylor Stitch California Shirt in Ash Windowpane ($128), a rugged winter shirt that more than rises to the occasion. Santa himself would be envious of this shirt. It’s that good. Made with 100 percent organic cotton that’s brushed for an incredibly soft feel, it checks all the boxes one might expect from any number in the Taylor Stitch shirting lineup.  I’m always consistently impressed with the fit and feel of these shirts (A note: I wear a size 40 at 6’1″). We’re talking a tailored-but-not-tight fit, plus that signature California collar — it’s substantial without being too wide, yet it’s got a nice construction that frames your face. Sounds like a great shirt to gift or wear this holiday season, right?

Taylor Stitch review

The addition of front button chest pockets is handy and useful.

And the specs make it more than worth spending a little extra on. Again, it’s coming from Taylor Stitch, so you’re getting durable touches like lock-stitched buttons and buttonholes, plus double-needle felled construction and that crucially tailored fit. I told you the Taylor Stitch California Shirt in Ash Windowpane checks plenty of boxes. It’s rugged without going over the top — the windowpane pattern is nicely muted atop the ash fabric. The Taylor Stitch California Shirt in Ash Windowpane is the kind of shirt you’re going to want to throw on with a classic white T-shirt and some slim tan chinos  for a casual evening at home. Yet, you can also dress it up under a navy herringbone blazer. An added benefit? The tail of this shirt is the perfect length be worn untucked (with slim faded denim) or tucked in (perhaps with the Taylor Stitch Telegraph Trousers). Can the Taylor Stitch California Shirt in Ash Windowpane do it all? Gift it to someone — or snag it for yourself — and find out.
