Style Suggestion: What to Wear on Memorial Day

Editor’s note: To see another Style Suggestion for Memorial Day, click here.

Just as it’s, somewhat incredulously, nearly time to prep for dressing for a summer wedding so too, is it time to get ready for Memorial Day.  There’s often a lot on the table — maybe you’ve got to sort out what to wear when traveling, and more crucially, what accessories to pack for a stylish trip. Hopefully, you’ll be somewhere relaxing, enjoyable and near the water.  If that’s the case, we’ll be tackling the standard weekend-casual get-up below, and yet tweaking it for the #menswear fan more interested in looking good than taking it easy when it comes to style. In fact, it’s situations like these where you can set yourself apart (in a good way) by upping the ante just a bit. As it were, small style upgrades can even trickle down to your Memorial Day accessories (we’re talking things like leather coasters and a brass bottle opener from Owen & Fred, for example). But that’s another matter. The ensemble below is what you should keep in mind for a barbeque, an afternoon of patio beers, or just a relaxing day with family and friends around town — it’s got pieces you’ll recognize (the polo among them), but they’re all updated. Curious what I’ll be wearing for Memorial Day? Follow me on Instagram (no pressure, though!). And if you have other gear you’d like to see featured, let me know on The Style Guide’s Facebook page.

The Polo: SWIMS Getaria Polo in White — $90

Slim, stylish and made from comfortable, moisture-wicking fabric.

Slim, stylish and made from comfortable, moisture-wicking fabric.

Is that pricey for a polo? Heck yes, it is. But the SWIMS Getaria Polo is not your standard baggy golf polo, nor is it your spongy, heavy pique polo of days past. This right here is a crisp, slim-fitting, comfortable polo that looks sharp and wicks sweat thanks to the PrimaLoft fabric. Yet, it doesn’t look at all like a sport polo — for one, there’s no pesky logo. And for another, the fit is actually trim, with sleeves that hit about mid-bicep. If it does get chilly, you could always grab a stylish spring jacket, and if a less expensive polo is more your thing, you could always grab one from this site’s guide to the best spring polos.

The Hybrid Short: SWIMS Paloma Hybrid Chino Short — $130

The functionality of a swim trunk, and the look of a tailored short.

The functionality of a swim trunk, and the look of a tailored short.

Now, some slim chino shorts would work well here, too. And yes, we’re going with another pick from the same brand … why? Well, that’s easy. Memorial Day travel is sometimes all about packing light. And if you’re only taking a day trip or an overnight, you want to maximize space — and the Paloma Hybrid Chino is a ridiculously effective way to do that. They perform like a swim short and they’ve got an inner mesh lining, yet they’ve also got the peached surface of a chino short. And the front tab closure and tailored fit mean they wear like a regular pair of shorts. Take these into the water and onto the dockside patio with reckless abandon (or something like that). Oh, and if you need a belt when you hop out of the water, grab one with a nautical influence.

The Shoes: Jack Erwin Cooper Boat Shoes — $125

A decidedly stylish boat shoe that's not what your father wore to the beach.

A decidedly stylish boat shoe that’s not what your father wore to the beach.

Just when you thought you’d sworn off boat shoes for good, the style comes roaring back — in a very, very good way. Jack Erwin’s new boat shoes are crisp and uniquely stylish, built on a loafer last for an elongated profile that’s far different from more classic styles. They’re available in Navy Leather, Slate Nubuck and the Caramel Nubuck you see here, and they feature a white rubber outsole for sleek styling (again, different than other boat shoes). The great thing is, these would also work just as well with navy chinos and a white Oxford at the office, and in this case, they’ll set you apart from other flip-flop wearing fellas.

The Socks: Pair of Thieves Cool Hand Luke No-Show Socks — $10

Socks that don't slide up -- critical given the type of footwear you'll be rocking.

Socks that don’t slide up — critical given the type of footwear you’ll be rocking.

So, while you very well might be in and out of the water this Memorial Day weekend, there’ll come a time when you need to slip on stylish shoes (like the Jack Erwin boat shoes above). And in keeping with those sleek shorts and sharp polo, you’re going to want a pair of socks that blends in seamlessly. Pair of Thieves uses designs that don’t look half-bad when worn on their own, and lucky for you and me both, this pair of socks slides nicely into shoes that are fit for the water or the walkway. Plus, the price is very agreeable. So agreeable, you just might be able to use the money you save for another beer.

The Watch: Timex Waterbury Dive Watch — $110

Nothing too fancy or expensive, yet every bit as solid.

Nothing too fancy or expensive, yet every bit as solid.

It’s not often you’ll find a pair of swim shorts that cost more than a watch, but that’s the case here — yet, you still get quality and durability for which Timex is known. This stainless steel Waterbury is part of the heritage line introduced by the brand to commemorate 160 years in business (yes, 160), and it should reliably do the job as far as dive watches go (although in that sense, it’s only water-resistant to 50 meters). Even still, it’s tough to beat the combo of price, looks and simple style that should fit right in alongside a refined-yet-casual ensemble.

The Hat: Bridge & Burn “B” Flat Wool Cap — $48

No need to go with a Nike cap here, ehh?

No need to go with a Nike cap here, ehh?

Although it’d be easy to throw on a simple athletic logo cap, we’re going for something a bit more stylish today. Bridge & Burn produces essentials that are timeless yet incorporate a rugged, somewhat outdoors-y flair. That’s the case with this neat wool cap, which features classic six-panel design and a simple, smart logo (and if your name happens to start with the letter B…). Like worsted wool found in four-season suits, the wool in this hat should be breathable and crucially, offer protection from the sun.

The Sunglasses: J. Crew The Jack Sunglasses in Silver Navy — $98

A new (yet already-classic) option from a brand that nails all kinds of style staples.

A new (yet already-classic) option from a brand that nails all kinds of style staples.

Did you think we forgot these guys? Not quite. If the solid good looks and very agreeable price are any indication, you’ll likely be seeing a lot of J. Crew’s new sunglasses around The Style Guide in the coming weeks and months (including in this site’s recent summer sunglasses guide). The Jack from J. Crew is simple, straightforward and classic in nature, with some brighter blue lenses to amp things up a bit. The frame shape should definitely work with lots of face types, and the color goes nicely with grey chino shorts, white polo and caramel nubuck boat shoes. Not a bad way to finish things off, ehh?

The above outfit certainly doesn’t incorporate a lot of bold prints, crazy styles or even unexpected swerves — yet it’s the colors and textures, from the unexpected boat shoes to the hybrid shorts and deceptively performance-ready polo, that make all the difference. Essentials like a stainless steel watch and aviator sunglasses are going to effectively get the job done no matter where you go. And if you pair these pieces with other must-haves — say, a cool denim tote bag or a nice leather lanyard — you’re going to be set in matters of style for this trip and several to come.

What do you think of the above get-up? What will you be rocking this Memorial Day?

#OOTD: How to Wear a Polo This Spring

Editor’s note: You’ve surely seen this hashtag lots of different places, including on Instagram. But how does that carry over to real life? The #OOTD series will take one great item and put together a versatile, stylish outfit around it. Look for past features here.

With the recent rise to prominence of athleisure in the #menswear world — that is, wearing athletic-style clothes outside the gym — the lines have blurred in terms of what items work together in certain outfits. Take a great pair of black sneakers, for instance. Once confined to being worn at the gym or only very casually, they now work in a variety of situations — even with garment-dyed jeans and a polo (spoiler alert!). The key is to approach the rest of your outfit in the same way — so, keeping the principles of style and proper fit in mind, and looking toward colors that work together. Of course, looking for a sport-inspired polo to finish off your outfit doesn’t hurt, either. And a crisp black stainless watch works very nearly everywhere regardless of the situation. Got that all down? On to the #OOTD below!
Florsheim

Mixing great outerwear with a retro polo and sneakers.

Mixing great outerwear with a retro polo and sneakers.

The Jacket: Bridge and Burn Harden Herringbone Jacket, $128 — A herringbone jacket in the spring? When it’s made from a poly/cotton blend in a  versatile color, it definitely works. It’s a step away from a more traditional spring jacket, and definitely would be handy to have when the weather turns south.

The Polo: BOAST USA Striped Pocket Polo, $72 — While you could certainly grab one from this site’s list of the best polos for spring, there’s something refreshing about reaching for a sporty offering from an unexpected brand.

The Denim: JackThreads Natural Garment-Dyed Slim Denim, $59 — Again, any of the options in The Style Guide’s list of the best lightwash denim would also work, but the Natural color is a nice change of pace — and it’s a tremendous price, too. Plus, these can be ordered as part of the brand’s free #JTTryouts program.

The Sneakers: Brooks Heritage Chariot Sneakers, $51.99 — These sneakers combine retro styling and modern performance in a silhouette that’s just sporty enough without looking like a traditional running sneaker.

The Belt: Perry Ellis Webbed Leather Trim Belt, $22.99 — Sometimes, less is better. That is, this belt combines some nice texture and a casual look with a low profile (unlike some of the belts in this feature).

The Socks: Pair of Thieves No-Show Spelurking Socks, $10 — Finding a pair of no-show socks that can be worn reliably through the spring and summer should be on your to-do list — they’ll keep your feet comfortable and help your shoes last much longer, too.

The Watch: Larsson and Jennings Chain-Metal Watch in Silver, $380 — Unlike other stylish casual watches featured on this here site, this timepiece definitely gets up there in price — but, you get reliable performance and minimal style in one package.

The Trunks: Mack Weldon 18-Hour Jersey Trunks, $22 — These trunks are remarkably comfortable and well-made, definitely worthy of the higher price tag.

The Hat: Ebbets Field Flannels Sacramento Solons Ballcap, $45 — When looking for areas in which to make style upgrades, a ballcap sans an athletic brand logo is a great place to start. Plus, it finishes off the ensemble with even more sporty, retro style inspiration.

Sometimes, great style can center around taking a few key pieces in the same theme — say, sport-inspired classics — and making them work together. A striped polo and jeans is nothing new, but when paired up with comfortable, retro sneakers and a vintage ballcap, you’ve got the makings of a solid casual outfit.  A stylish spring jacket from a brand that knows how to make ’em is always a reliable bet, too. And a versatile watch with some interesting visual details (like a chain-metal strap) works well with the rest of the ensemble. Online Shopping Picks: The 5 Best Short-Sleeve Shirts for Spring and Summer

Editor’s note: For a host of online shopping picks that’ll have you ready for every occasion, head this way.

A short-sleeve shirt can be worn all kinds of ways, but particularly with classics like dark denim and navy sneakers. Vintage 'drinks' shirt. Dark denim by Mott & Bow. Navy Rosen Runners by GREATS Brand. Glasses by Warby Parker.

A short-sleeve shirt can be worn all kinds of ways, but particularly with classics like dark denim and navy sneakers. Vintage ‘drinks’ shirt. Dark denim by Mott & Bow. Navy Rosen Runners by GREATS Brand. Glasses by Warby Parker.

Here we are, practically on the verge of summer travel season really heating up. Memorial Day is barreling toward us and it’s time to reach for spring style essentials like a casual watch or a nice pair of spring and summer shorts. Yet, how to finish off those ensembles? A polo is a foolproof go-to underneath a blazer (or on its own) at the office, and a popover offers a change of pace visually from a standard T-shirt in casual situations. Let’s say you’re feeling a tad more daring, or the occasion calls for something a bit more … eye-catching. It’s always fun to inject pattern and color into your wardrobe, and it’s all the better to be able to do it comfortably — that is, you’ll ideally only be needing a short-sleeve shirt, not a ton of winter layers (or even a spring jacket). That brings us to the below picks — feast your eyes on the best short-sleeve shirts for spring and summer. Take ’em to the beach, take ’em on a stylish spring bar crawl, and rock them everywhere in between (yes, even at the office). Any brand you see missing? Let me know on Facebook or Twitter.

#1. JackThreads The Chambray Short-Sleeve Shirt — $39

A slight deviation from the standard chambray shirt in terms of pattern (and the lack of, y'know, sleeves).

A slight deviation from the standard chambray shirt in terms of pattern (and the lack of, y’know, sleeves).

Interested in taking the plunge into short-sleeve territory but don’t want to spend a ton of money doing it? Having a tough time putting away that essential chambray shirt after rocking it all winter? We’re in the same boat. And given both those things, it’s a really solid bet to reach for a JackThreads chambray short-sleeve shirt that doesn’t overdo it on the pattern, keeps the price nice and low, and comes in that oh-so-familiar chambray material (with a color that’s easy to pair with, as well). For more on what makes JackThreads so great, check out this feature.

#2. Saturdays Surf NYC Esquina Gingham Shirt in White/Indigo — $115

No zany patterns here -- just an effectively stylish gingham print and a modern fit.

No zany patterns here — just an effectively stylish gingham print and a modern fit.

If, on the other hand, you’re more than ready to hop into the short-sleeve shirt pool, give this nice number from Saturdays Surf NYC a try. The brand does lots of things well when it comes to warm-weather gear, from its selection of neutral yet well-crafted knitwear to surfboards actually made for catching waves. While there are more eye-catching patterns from the brand on the site, this gingham pattern pairs easily with more standard style staples, like slim tan chinos and classic white sneakers. Be prepared to pay more for this piece, but know that (at least in this writer’s experience), you’ll be able to wear a shirt like this one for months on end.

#3. Bridge & Burn Thomas Pacific Latitude Shirt — $108

A major pop of pattern that manages to stay grounded thanks to the deep indigo color.

A major pop of pattern that manages to stay grounded thanks to the deep indigo color.

For times that you want something more than gingham or a lighter floral print, grab the truly excellent Bridge & Burn Pacific Latitude Shirt. The cotton-linen blend (50 percent either way, as it were) will keep you cool when temperatures heat up, and the fit is flattering but not too trim. The best part about this shirt? The rich leaf pattern indigo print, which works surprisingly well even atop the striped fabric. It’s nothing short of the ideal shirt to wear on vacation or to the beach — it’s a style upgrade from the standard Hawaiian shirt in every way.

#4. Old Navy Classic Slim-Fit Shirt in White — $21

Dirt-cheap and classic. Not bad at all!

Dirt-cheap and classic. Not bad at all!

Unlike some of the other picks on this list, the Old Navy Classic Slim-Fit Shirt  is downright cheap. That doesn’t lessen its quality though, for the most part — Old Navy reliably delivers on classic pieces for not a lot of money. Again, if you want to test out something more standard before grabbing a printed shirt (like the pick right below this one), this shirt is the one for you. Lest you avoid comparisons to Dwight Schrute, it’d be wise to pair this shirt with, say, some navy shorts and a quilted jacket on the weekends (like this Style Guide #OOTD feature).

#5. J. Crew Factory Slim Short-Sleeve Linen Printed Shirt — $38.50

Linen is the way to go in terms of keeping cool this summer -- short sleeves make it all the easier.

Linen is the way to go in terms of keeping cool this summer — short sleeves make it all the easier.

It truly wouldn’t be an Online Shopping Picks feature without a pick from J. Crew or J. Crew Factory, right? Aside from a store like Old Navy, they continue to get things right in terms of quality, price point and selection. Given that there’ve been so many blue or white shirts on this here list, this red linen short-sleeve shirt was an easy pick. They’ve given this shirt the full linen treatment here, so it should be extra breezy and cool — as a summer style hack, you could definitely rock this short-sleeve shirt underneath a slim khaki blazer at a summer wedding (preferably sans tie). Wait for a sale, and the price could drop even lower.

As more and more brands truly try to become four-season brands, there are certainly some other options you should consider. For a premium feel and distinctive patterns, check out Bonobos short-sleeve shirts . If you still find yourself searching for a lower price point, swing through Uniqlo for a mixture of plaid and neutral options that are definitely affordable. And a perennial favorite of this site, Grayers, is also stocked up on short-sleeve shirts for the season. No matter where you buy, keep in mind that fit trumps all, even when trying out something a bit different stylistically. So that means a slim body, sleeves that hit about mid-bicep and a length that can definitely be worn untucked. Got all that down? Go to it!

Stay stylish,

-Beau

#OOTD: How to Dress for a Rainy Spring Day

Editor’s note: You’ve surely seen this hashtag lots of different places, including on Instagram. But how does that carry over to real life? The #OOTD series will take one great item and put together a versatile, stylish outfit around it. Look for past features here.

If you’ve been keeping up with the #OOTD series here on The Style Guide, you might notice that the outfits as of late have leaned more casual (if a tailored look is what you seek, head here). Perhaps it’s the shifting climate that has this menswear writer more geared toward shorts, perhaps it’s the effects of a stylish trip to Florida, or perhaps it’s the return of semi-chilly weather earlier in April that has me digging the chance to , well, actually wear shorts now that it’s a bit warmer — regardless, that’s where we’re headed today. Just because you go with a more casual vibe (note the drawstring shorts below) doesn’t mean you have to look sloppy. That’s doubly true even if it rains or it’s breezy — you don’t want just any spring jacket. In the case of the below, we’re talking serious protection from the elements, and some neat heritage style thrown in the mix. Work in some new spring sneakers and an easygoing watch, and you’ll be all set no matter how hard the rain comes down. Sound good? Good. Want to see a different #OOTD? Head to The Style Guide’s Facebook page for a chat!

Casual vibes upgraded thanks to some high-quality brands & subtle style details.

Casual vibes upgraded thanks to some high-quality brands & subtle style details.

The Jacket: Taylor Stitch Beach Jacket in Navy, $128: Another standout from a brand that’s chock full of ’em, this piece is currently pre-funding, but the general idea remains the same — tough outerwear can look great and take you very far. You could also grab a classic JackThreads Mac Jacket and perhaps some light wash denim instead if you wanted something similar now.

The T-Shirt: Bridge and Burn Graphic Tee, $36: The tee keeps this outfit casual (so it’s probably more weekend-minded), but it’s part of some style ugprades we’ve talked about — the graphic is subtle and understated, and the fit is on-point.

The Shorts: JACHS NY Indigo Linen Shorts, $89: Another fantastic style upgrade from standard shorts, they’re easygoing yet not frumpy. If it’s a bit breezy or you want to dress this outfit up, sub in a chambray shirt & dark denim.

The Sneakers: The Hill-Side Standard Low-Tops in Natural Duck Canvas, $175: If you haven’t gotten around to checking out a pair of The Hill-Side sneakers, I’d recommend you do so. Sturdy, well-crafted and stylish!

The Socks: Mack Weldon No-Show Socks, $14.50: The same brand that makes your favorite merino T-shirt also makes some handy socks for that “ankles-out” look so common in the warmer months.

The Trunks: Mack Weldon 18-Hour Jersey Trunks, $22: Just as their socks are worth a look, this brand knows how to craft a great pair of underwear (no, really). Again, an investment that’s also a significant style upgrade from standard boxers.

The Watch: Timex Weekender Fairfield, $75: A downright simple watch for a downright excellent price, ideal for all kinds of casual wear.

The Sunglasses: Spine Optics Aviator Sunglasses, $88.99: As with the above Timex watch, sometimes, simple is better. These sunglasses are durable and remarkably flexible, and won’t upstage the rest of your look.

As with other seasonal spring style suggestions, be it how to dress for Sunday brunch or how to prep for a spring bar crawl, your gear should fit where you’re going. That is, if a T-shirt needs to be subbed out for a slim plaid shirt, that’s the move to make. But alongside that, choosing to upgrade your casual basics — like standard sneakers for a sturdier pair, or old boxers for new trunks — should also be top of mind. Wardrobe reinvention doesn’t have to be done all at once, but small steps can pave the way toward great style. Pick up that Taylor Stitch jacket for me while you’re at it, ehh?

Stay stylish,

-Beau
