Style Pick of the Week: Wellen Hemp Chambray Work Shirt

A rugged workshirt that you’ll love wearing all fall.

If you’ve swung through the digital pages of The Style Guide recently, you’re probably well-acquainted with the rugged style essentials being sold by Wellen Surf, the new in-house brand at Huckberry. There’s no wrong way to go here when it comes to the brand’s sustainable style picks, and specifically, the Wellen Hemp Chambray Work Shirt — the perfect workshirt to wear all fall. That’s high praise, but Wellen can back it up. Don’t quite believe me? Step into my office and let’s dig into why this might be the best workshirt for your hard-earned cash — seriously. Like the rest of the Wellen collection, the Wellen Hemp Chambray Work Shirt really all comes down to the fabric; in this case, this durable workshirt starts with the use of both organic cotton and hemp. Hemp is a sort of nature “wonder fabric,” as it adds to the health of the soil in which it’s grown — and it results in excellent products like this stylish workshirt, to boot.  This tough workshirt also happens to be lined in organic cotton twill Oxford fabric, adding another degree of tough functionality and style — that means you can wear it over something as simple as an indigo T-shirt or even a thermal henley. Talk about having your fall style essentials on lock, ehh?

The Best Basics. Summer Ready.SHOP: The Wellen Hemp Chambray Work Shirt

The right details make all the difference when it comes to the Wellen Work Shirt.

In addition to the textured fabric and functional lining, the Wellen Hemp Chambray Work Shirt also provides a degree of handy utility via two front chest pockets to hold small everyday carry essentials. The fit is also a selling point you need to consider when hunting for the best men’s workshirt — this particular take on the style is trim but easy to layer, featuring gathered fabric at the back shoulders to give you full range of movement. Again, this is the right workshirt to layer atop a slim henley and pair up with rugged chore pants for your next day trip or morning outdoor project. And if you’d rather just wear the Wellen Hemp Chambray Work Shirt underneath your favorite denim jacket to grab a weekend coffee? You can (and should!) do that, too. The point is, the Wellen Hemp Chambray Work Shirt checks all the right boxes when it comes to transitional fall style, from rugged layering potential to top-notch functionality. You’ll find yourself reaching for it plenty in the weeks and months to come.

Step into the holiday weekend in style with this perfectly rugged jacket.

Before we dive right in though, I’m taking in all that the weekend has to offer in NYC. I was initially supposed to head down to sunny Florida, but over the past few days, Hurricane Dorian is on track to make the state … decidedly less sunny. My family is safe and sound in Fort Myers in the meantime, and while I keep in touch with them throughout the weekend, I’ll be enjoying the start of the Michigan State football season tonight, cold beer in hand. I also plan on making the trek out to Jersey City on Saturday to see the much-lauded live return of one of my favorite bands, Future Islands! I loved seeing them at last year’s “There’s No Leaving New York” Festival in NYC (featuring The National!) and this will be my first time hearing new songs they’ve got on tap! To say I’m excited to head to the excellent White Eagle Hall (and have a cold one at Jersey City craft beer establishment Pint) is an understatement. How about your weekend plans? Follow along with all the fun on my Instagram. In the meantime, here’s the Friday Read you’ve been waiting for below! Cheers.

  • We’ve talked in the past about how difficult it can be to find the right made-in-America menswear — that’s why I’m such a fan of the Dickies 1922 Collection, a series of updated takes on the brand’s iconic silhouettes, from a tough truck driver jacket to a classic chambray shirt. Read my full overview at The Manual for more.
  • Hey, it’s the weekend — treat yourself to a cold one, will ya? And on that note, I give you perhaps the best new IPA (OK, well, one of them at least). It’s coming to you courtesy of Goose Island, and the Next Coast IPA is the right beer to add to your cooler or fridge in time for Labor Day weekend, tailgating season and beyond that.
  • For Labor Day weekend — the style moment of the hour, as it were — you’re going to want gear that’s laidback and breezy, casual yet versatile … so, kind of like this Faherty Brand poncho. It’s the perfect piece of weekend outerwear, easily paired up with slim chino shorts, white canvas sneakers and a classic white tee to head to the beach or the boardwalk. It’s an effective way to layer up when summer’s last call gets breezy, too.

The Best Basics. Summer Ready.

And with that, it’s time to close out summer and head into the weekend. Fear not, though — I’ve got one last suggested piece of reading for your enjoyment. I’m guessing — just a guess — that my guide as to what to wear to a bonfire could come in handy this weekend. It’s all things rugged-yet-casual, and ready for anything. Enjoy the weekend, folks!

#OOTD: How to Dress for Early Fall This Year

If it makes you jump out of your seat a bit to see the words “early fall” in a headline, know that I’m every bit as surprised by the end of summer as you. In that regard, we’ve been telling you all about the men’s style essentials to get you ready for the next season across these past few weeks, and today is no different. Our #OOTD focuses on the kind of gear you’re going to want to start slowly incorporating into your fall lineup, from a vintage-inspired chambray shirt to rugged leather boots and, simply put, the perfect pants to wear for early fall. This season is all about gear that can work with you in multiple situations. That’s why (as you’ll see), we’re incorporating a heavyweight pocket tee from our pals at Filson into the mix, seeing as you can wear it on its own during the day to grab a weekend coffee, then layer it up at night to grab cocktails at that new speakeasy in town. We’re also including a tough bag for your everyday carry, not to mention one of the best men’s watches you’ll find anywhere. Jumping into fall doesn’t have to be something you do all at once — mixing and matching the kinds of pieces that work in multiple seasons (and style situations!) is the way to go. So, ideally, this post can help you start to leave summer in the rearview mirror (sadly!) and look toward a crisp, cool, fun fall. Have questions for me on fall style tips? Reach out on Twitter.

Pairing a classic chambray shirt with a classic summer T-shirt — and classic leather boots. Get the idea?

  • The Shirt: Dickies 1922 Chambray Shirt, $190 — To be sure, we’ve been recommending pieces like a classic chambray shirt a lot lately — it’s the perfect layer to take you into the early part of next month, and this Dickies 1922 shirt is based on an old archival style. Utterly classic.
  • The T-shirt: Filson 8oz. Solid Pocket Tee, $55 — Leave it to Filson to craft a timeless pocket tee in a substantial fabric, perfect to wear on its own or layer underneath your new favorite shirt.
  • The Pants: Proof Rover Pants, $98 — A fitting hybrid between chinos and jeans is what this time of year calls for, and these might be the perfect pants to wear for early fall (and beyond). Easy to move around in, extremely breathable & also well-made.
  • The Boots: Red Wing Heritage Rover Boots, $269.99 — The key to moving this outfit from summer into early fall? Rugged leather boots from Red Wing Heritage, the kind that are still lightweight and versatile enough to wear with the Proof Rover Pants.
  • The Watch: Lum-Tec M84 Automatic Watch, $1,095 — Yes, we’ve been featuring this rugged Lum-Tec watch a fair amount on the blog as of late, all owing to the fact that it’s simply one of the best men’s watches on the market, and perfect for this outfit.
  • The Belt: Arcade Belt Co. Norrland Woven Belt, $38 — Finding a functional, rugged belt is no small task, but Arcade Belt Co. comes through with one of the best men’s belts we’ve seen — this is no flimsy, thin leather belt that you’d pick up by the check-out rack at a fast-fashion shop, mind you.
  • The Everyday Brief: Boarding Pass NYC Flight Brief, $199 — Thinking about taking this show on the road? Even if it’s just to knock out some work at your local coffee shop, this rugged, durable & yet refined flight brief is perfect for your everyday carry.
  • The Grooming Essential: West Skincare Recovery Cream, $55 — If you’re not yet acquainted with West Skincare, consider this your introduction. This is active skincare made for guys who need active recovery, and this cream in particular is designed to hydrate and restore skin.

Now, if you’re not feeling ready for early fall yet, well, consider this a helpful guide to get started. When you start out wearing a classic chambray shirt, especially the rugged Dickies vintage shirt above, you’re setting yourself up for success — it’s perfectly casual and versatile enough for summer and fall. The same can be said of the equally rugged Filson pocket tee, again the type of tee you can wear all on its own or under any shirt you’d like. Throw in quite possibly the perfect pants to wear for early fall, and you’ve got a winning base for an outfit that’s geared to sip on an Old Fashioned, crack open a cold beer or visit your local park. In fact, that’s where rugged leather boots from Red Wing Heritage can come in mighty handy — they’re extremely tough & versatile enough for multiple seasons. And when you accessorize with a rugged Lum-Tec watch, you’re keeping the outfit squarely in casual, go-anywhere territory. The only thing to do now? Grab your Boarding Pass NYC flight brief, accessorize with a functional, rugged belt and your everyday carry, then finish off your look with West Skincare’s Active Recovery Cream. OK, now who’s ready for early fall?

The List: Warm Up This Season with the Best New Men’s Gear

The jacket on the left is one of the best new men’s style essentials you can snag now … trust me on that.

Now, before we get into today’s edition of The List — covering all the best new men’s style gear to shop now, naturally — you’re probably wondering … “Who makes that gorgeous  bomber jacket up top?” The answer, my friends, is none other than our friend, lauded American menswear hero Mr. Todd Snyder. And it’s just one of the favorites I’ve got on my shopping list this week. What about you? Let’s get into it in 3 … 2 … 1.

Golden Bear + Todd Snyder Shearling Collar Bomber — $895

One heck of a bomber jacket.

An instantly iconic jacket that’ll stand out in all the right ways this fall and winter.
Laco Paderborn Original Pilot Watch — $1,071

A stunning watch to wear for work or play this fall and winter.

Want a watch that’ll pair seamlessly with the aforementioned bomber jacket? Reach for this stylish pilot’s watch — it’s not often that we feature a truly investment-level watch on the blog, but Laco has outdone themselves.  Beautiful.
Rancourt  & Co. Wolf Boots — $395

Stunning fall boots (multiple colors available) for your next snowy trek.

Some of the best boots money can buy, and a favorite of the blog. Simply put, the Rancourt & Co. Wolf Boots deserve your hard-earned cash this fall. Absolutely on any list of the best men’s winter boots, right?
Howler Brothers Harker Flannel Shirt — $89

The cozy weekend flannel you didn’t know you needed, right?

Call this stylish flannel shirt what it is — a terrific option to have in your wardrobe in terms of color, cut and fit.

Billy Reid Corduroy 5-Pocket Pants — $165

Durable construction and excellent quality overall, yes?

Classic corduroy pants from a lauded American designer? Sign me up, yessir.

Taylor Stitch Democratic Jeans in 24-Month Wash — $128

Perfectly broken in jeans made from exceedingly rare denim.

These hard-to-find, very covetable Taylor Stitch jeans (as seen in this post here) can be scooped up for a limited time only. It’s nice to shake things up from dark denim in the fall, too.
Far Afield Wilson Long-Sleeve Shirt — $120

Another pleasingly casual flannel for cold weather.

This brushed cotton flannel shirt, a favorite at Bespoke Post, should be cozy, comfortable and exceptionally warm on fall and winter weekends.
Filson Ballistic Nylon Dryden Briefcase — $175

The dependable everyday bag that’s going to help you step easily into fall and winter.

Yet another rugged everyday bag from the good folks at Filson. The perfect bag for fall? And winter? Maybe, just maybe.
Chicago Comb Co. Leather Sheath — $19.98

A small-but-useful everyday carry essential.

It’s the underrated style essentials that can make the biggest difference in your life — seriously. This unique leather sheath is unexpected, but pretty darn cool.
Flag and Anthem Watson Western Shirt — $59.50

Going all in on stylish fall flannel shirts today.

Casual, washed for a lived-in feel, and cut in that cool way that only classic Western shirts can be — this Flag and Anthem shirt is a new personal favorite.
Aymara James Sweater — $150

The next addition to your shelf (or dresser drawer) of sweaters, folks.

The Aymara James Sweater, to me, evokes bitterly cold, snowy mornings at your cabin or lake retreat — or in the city. The point is, it’s rugged and handsome enough to wear anywhere. One of the best sweaters for winter? Maybe.
Topo Designs Classic Duffel — $99.98

This weekender bag is the difference between a good trip and a great trip.

A functional, understated bag can be an underappreciated part of your lineup of fall style essentials. Not so with the Topo Designs Classic Duffel.
Alright, we’ve wrapped up this week’s edition of The List — what are you adding to your own personal wish list? I’m personally a big fan of lacing up the Rancourt & Co. Wolf Boots and getting out there this fall and winter. Thanks for reading!

See Now, Buy Now: Fight the Chill This Fall and Winter with this Buffalo Jackson Shirt Jacket

The exceptional shirt jacket you can layer with just about anythign this season.

Not familiar with Buffalo Jackson yet? Or the very specific brand of men’s style essentials they produce? We’re about to change all of that today on your favorite neighborhood menswear blog. Yes indeed, the Shepherd Moleskin Shirt Jacket from Buffalo Jackson could just be your new go-to fall and winter weekend layer — it’s that great. For just $70, you get a shirt-jacket that blends comfort, style, rugged appeal and that distinctive blend of Southern style and Western charm that Buffalo Jackson does so well. It’s the same type of cotton that outdoorsmen have worn and  looked to for dependable performance for decades, so you can rest assured that you’re covered there. As known for its leather goods as for its equally well-crafted apparel, the Shepherd Moleskin Shirt Jacket gets the job done, doubling as a mid-layer (perhaps underneath a well-tailored topcoat?) or a top layer in its own right — the Shepherd Moleskin Shirt Jacket certainly would work swimmingly atop a classic chambray shirt, along with rugged dark blue denim, for a chilly early weekend morning.

And if you fancy using the Shepherd Moleskin Shirt Jacket in place of a blazer atop an Oxford shirt, you can absolutely style it in that regard, too. The Wheat color in particular is a personal favorite, just as suited for wearing with the Flint and Tinder Stonewashed Jeans as it is with olive chinos and rugged brown leather boots. Front flap chest pockets add visual interest and functionality — feel free to use ’em to store your everday carry with ease.  At the end of the day, there’s perhaps not a better, more rugged layer — atop a henley, underneath a camel topcoat, and so on — than this stylish shirt jacket. How will you be styling the Shepherd Moleskin Shirt Jacket this season? Let me know on Twitter

Style Pick of the Week: Taylor Stitch Montara Jacket

Will you look as good as this dude, or Steve McQueen, or Daniel Craig, wearing a Harrington jacket? Maybe?

When it comes to menswear essentials, there are certain critical pieces that really never go out of style. The classic Oxford shirt. Slim blue jeans. The perfect white T-shirt. And now — especially for fall and winter — the iconic Harrington jacket. And if you think you know everything there is to know about this essential piece, think again: The  Taylor Stitch Montara Jacket, exclusive to our friends at Huckberry, is here to shake up what you thought you knew about this style. Favored by menswear luminaries and rugged gentlemen like Mr. Steve McQueen and Mr. Daniel Craig as James Bond, the iconic Harrington jacket — and more specifically in the case of today’s post, the Taylor Stitch Montara Jacket is a tried-and-true style that works well in inclement weather, layers up with ease, and goes with just about anything in your wardrobe — more than worthy of today’s entry as the coveted Style Pick of the Week, right? Certainly.

SHOP: The Taylor Stitch Montara Jacket via Huckberry

A handsome, rugged and stylish jacket. Perfect, right?

In the case of the Taylor Stitch Montara Jacket, it starts with the cotton-nylon shell, made to ward off weather and layer up over a rugged crewneck sweater or a classic chambray shirt. The beauty of the classic Harrington jacket is in its versatility — the style is laidback enough to wear with something like a rugged henley, and yet it looks equally sharp atop a slim dress shirt or an essential Oxford shirt. And of course, the Taylor Stitch Montara Jacket is among the finest options you’ve got on the market for a classic style that works any day of the week. The custom Taylor Stitch print on the interior lining — 100 percent cotton, mind you — offers extra warmth in the fall chill, while the corduroy-lined collar calls back to classic field jackets. The stand-up collar is also another signifier of a classic Harrington jacket, which makes it an easy and polished option to wear for all manner of style situations — including fall and winter travel, or a laidback weekend coffee run. The Taylor Stitch Montara Jacket is every bit as stylish and versatile as the rest of the brand’s gear — it even features handwarmer pockets, making it more hard-wearing than other, more lightweight Harrington jackets. What could be better than that? Well, if you’ve made it this far, then it’s worth pointing out that the handsome Taylor Stitch Montara Jacket will set you back just $149.98. Yep. Under $150 for a stylish fall jacket that wears easily with your favorite men’s style essentials, from dark denim to flannel shirting to rugged leather boots. The point is this: The classic Harrington jacket is a seasonal style must-have. And the Taylor Stitch Montara Jacket is the one to buy. Bingo!

#OOTD: The Right Way to Layer Your Favorite Shirt Jacket This Season

We’re back at it today on The Style Guide with a new dose of men’s style essentials for you — I have a feeling you’re going to enjoy this #OOTD if you enjoy rugged layers. The centerpiece of this outfit comes, of course, from a Style Guide favorite — it’s the Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket, and if you’re going to invest in a shirt jacket, now is the time to do it. The shirt jacket can be worn in plenty of style situations, including in inclement weather. It’s a reliable replacement for a bulky jacket, and it teams with other shirts already in your closet — as you’ll see below.  In my mind, this is an #OOTD to wear on a chilly fall weekend out and about, or during a cabin weekend retreat … you get the picture. Heck, you could even reach for the Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket at a late-season football tailgate or bonfire. Of course, if you have, y’know, actual work to do? Well then, it’s serviceable in that regard, too. So, here;s the deal: We’re going to layer up with a stylish casual shirt, then we’re going to throw on some rugged chore pants and some stylish leather boots, and then … well, you’ll be able to see the rest shortly.  As I always stress here on the blog, if you start your outfit with one reliable centerpiece — a la the Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket — the rest can easily fall into place. I’d say there’s a lot to love about the reliability and extraordinary style of this #OOTD, correct? Maybe it’s just me, but you really can’t go wrong with the remarkable Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket, and then the rest of your ensemble follows from there. Whether you make this work during a chilly fall morning or your first winter retreat, the other complementary pieces of this ensemble are every bit as excellent as you’d expect. The Flint and Tinder Check Buttondown gives you some visual interest — wear it on its own every chance you get, too. And for days where the job calls for real work — or a few rounds of your favorite beer — the Flint and Tinder Mill Pants are a solid choice, the ideal choice to sit atop the Nisolo Mateo Boots, which blend rugged style and refined durability in one package. They’ll be all the more comfortable and warm when you team them with cozy, surprisingly stylish socks from American Trench.Lastly, I’d urge you to never — nope, never — leave the house without a rugged, durable watch like the one shown here from Huckberry x Lum-Tec. And lastly, you don’t know the gear you need until you don’t know it — that’s where the Bespoke Post Light Up EDC Kit comes in handy.  With that, this #OOTD is in the books. How are you wearing it? That’s going to close out today’s edition of The List. Any favorites? For me, I dig the exceptional Tricker’s Low Leg Logger Boots. Stay tuned this week for more exceptional menswear — trust me.

Style Pick of the Week: Flint and Tinder Slub Waffle Henley

From the cool texture to the rugged styling potential, this Flint and Tinder henley is a winter go-to.

Another day, another dollar … and another piece of stylish fall menswear from our pals at Flint and Tinder. They’re all about rugged, easy-to-wear essentials that channel classic style — like the timeless henley. Specifically, The Flint and Tinder Slub Waffle Henley is quite the addition to your fall layering game, and it’s one you’re going to want to pick up as soon as possible. It’s fitting that it’s joining the roster of our Style Pick of the Week series, which — as luck would have it — is packed with plenty of fall style essentials that would readily pair up with the Flint and Tinder Slub Waffle Henley.  What is it about a henley that can help every guy update his look in a rugged, fall-ready way? It’s the layering potential — wearable under a chambray shirt or a black moto jacket — and it’s the sense of casual cool you get from wearing a henley. That’s nearly all there is to it. Well, maybe not all there is to it.  The Flint and Tinder Slub Waffle Henley flips the script on the typical henley, with a slub thermal weave that easily lends itself to weekend layering — that’s just a start.

Innovative details help make this a seasonal staple — agreed?

More specifically, the Flint and Tinder Slub Waffle Henley is just a nicely made henley, from the unbreakable UREA metal fisheye buttons to the poplin placket (made to provide some visual and textural interest). The end result is a unique henley that’s worth the price ($62) and able to be paired up with slightly more refined pieces. Seriously, try it underneath a tan herringbone blazer with dark denim for some classic high-low style at the office. And if you couldn’t tell by now, I personally love the Birch color — although you can also snag the Flint and Tinder Slub Waffle Henley in colors like Charcoal and Olive. The great news? No matter the color you select, the wearability of the Flint and Tinder Slub Waffle Henley is top-notch. Take your favorite flannel shirt, add this rugged henley, throw on some slim black denim and call it good. Conversely, roll out of bed during the work week, pair the Flint and Tinder Slub Waffle Henley with a nay flannel suit and brown leather lace-up boots — it just works. And if you want a henley to wear this weekend with cozy sweats? Yessir, the Flint and Tinder Slub Waffle Henley  can do that, too.
