The Friday Read: What to Wear for Thanksgiving, Filson’s New Jacket & the Best Corduroy Blazers

This jacket is seriously tough and rugged — perfect for a winter weekend.

Given that it’s a late November weekend, it’s understandable if you’ve got rugged winter style — and holiday gift shopping, for that matter — on the brain. Case in point: Perhaps the excellent Peregrine Bexley Jacket shown above is on your shopping list (or your holiday wish list). And if you weren’t ready for winter before, I’d wager that a rugged waxed jacket is going to help get you ready in a hurry. Again, Peregrine means business — so too, should your winter style. OK, let’s get to the rest of today’s Friday Read. First and foremost, I’m excited to close out a busy week in Brooklyn, which featured a show at the excellent Elsewhere venue in Bushwick by indie rockers Wild Nothing. Yes indeed, it’ll be high time for some much-needed rest and relaxation back home, including a late fall stroll through Prospect Park and an Old Fashioned or two at my favorite bar in Brooklyn. This week was exciting in other ways, too — the lineup was announced for The National Homecoming Festival, an incredible Cincy fest put on by (and celebrating!) my very favorite band … yes, of course, The National. I went to the first edition of the festival in April 2018, and for this go-round, I already have my tickets! Needless to say … I couldn’t be more thrilled to return to Ohio next year! Will I see you there? Let me know on Twitter. In the meantime, be sure to get your weekend started on the right foot with today’s Friday Read.

  • In matters of style, first and foremost, one of the best men’s blazers can take your look from good to great, whether you pair it with your favorite henley or with a crisp Oxford shirt. And there’s something to be said for doing things a bit differently in that regard — like switching up the texture and fabric of your blazer. And on that note … I wrote about my favorite corduory blazers for The Manual, so you can dress for the season with ease.
  • I mentioned above that we’d be telling you about the best men’s winter jackets for the season here, including one from the rugged gear purveyors at Filson. Well, ladies and gentlemen … that time has come. Specifically, I covered the excellent Filson Double Mackinaw Wool Jacket over at GearMoose, and you can rest assured that it’s ready to go anywhere this season (yes, even to Thanksgiving dinner!).
  • Speaking of seasonal dressing — as in, dressing for Thanksgiving dinner — you might find this recent #OOTD covering what to wear on a chily fall day comes in mighty handy as you prep for the rest of November and December.
  • As I mentioned above, it’s been a very, very exciting week in my neck of the woods, as The National Homecoming, the second iteration of the excellent festival put on by my favorite band, returns next May. Read about this terrific festival here.

OK, before you go away for the weekend … stick around with my guide to the best new menswear for fall and winter, why don’t you? I think you’ll find precisely what you’re looking for when it comes to winter style essentials, including a tough shirt jacket, some standout whiskey for fall and winter, and rugged leather boots aplenty. That’s where your weekend should start — where will it take you? Adventure in style & thanks for reading!

Thirsty Monk Trail Monk IPA — Price Varies

An IPA brewed with orange zest for a good (no, great) cause benefitting the outdoors. Photo courtesy of Thirsty Monk.

Here’s the thing about craft beer — if you’re willing to seek it out, you’re going to find excellent local and regional brews in plenty of places. And if you live in or near Portland, Asheville or Denver (three of my favorite cities!), you know the joys of the terrific “Belgian-rooted ales” being produced at Thirsty Monk’s brewpubs. That list includes the new Trail Monk IPA, made with orange peel and zest for a bittersweet zing at the finish. I had the chance to visit the excellent Asheville Downtown location, and I can’t recommend it enough — what’s more, portion of proceeds from sales of Trail Monk will benefit Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation in Asheville, the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative in Denver, and Trailkeepers of Oregon. Craft beer that tastes great AND gives back? That’s nearly too good to be true!

Taylor Stitch Lodge Sweater in Army — $168

#OOTD: How to Dress for a Fall Evening On The Town — The Right Way

So, you’ve done your research, you’ve made your reservation and you’re looking forward to an evening at your favorite cocktail bar, a secluded whiskey den or an old-school speakeasy — if it’s a special occasion, and even if it’s not, I’d bet you’re now on the hunt for what to wear out on a fall evening. Date night, weeknight, post-concert, pre-dinner … the right #OOTD can go a long way in terms of solidifying rock-solid fall and winter style, and I’m here to help you put it all together.

My go-to in a situation like this is usually my trusty Flint and Tinder Trucker Jacket, to go along with my neighborhood whiskey bar, Sycamore Bar and Flower Shop, but perhaps you want to step it up a notch (NYC’s The Dead Rabbit ought to do the trick!). Wherever you go, the best men’s style essentials are crucial in that regard — we’re talking subtle but stylish, considered and composed. Witness our picks below, from slim black jeans — sharp but not too stuffy — to rich cognac leather boots and more unique touches suited to an evening on the town. Case in point: Layers like a rugged work jacket and slick-but-classic touches like an organic cotton Oxford shirt. Of course, you’ll also find the best leather dress watch in this ensemble for the taking. The key here is putting together a look that’s sharp, versatile and comfortable — in my mind, this is a get-up you could wear to the office, and then right out to dinner afterwards. It all comes together in a fall-friendly black-and-tan combination that’ll quietly turn heads, and hopefully, impress your company. Like the look of this? Feel free to reach out to me on Twitter.

Pairing up rich leather boots with dark denim and a workwear jacket — all in the pursuit of great whiskey.

  • The Slim Dark Denim: Bluffworks Travel Jeans 2.0 in Black Dark Wash, $98 — Invest in the best with these slim black jeans in a flattering fit — built-in stretch and handy hidden pockets ensure your everyday carry essentials are taken care of, while the silhouette is dressy enough for a refined bar or speakeasy.
  • The Jacket: Vetra French Moleskin Jacket, $229 — A modern update to the classic workwear silhouette, this rugged work jacket provides a nice contrast to your slim black jeans and white Oxford shirt — it’s casual but not too casual, and visually interesting all the same.
  • The Shirt: By Garment Makers Organic Shirt, $78 — A crisp, classic white Oxford shirt is a foolproof move, no matter the occasion — and when the occasion involves enjoying an Old Fashioned alongside pleasant company, well, you’d best look the part. This might just be the best Oxford shirt to snap up for fall and winter.
  • The Boots: Moral Code Jacques Wingtip Boots, $249 — The right leather boots can really tie an outfit together — and the pair of the moment has to be this pleasingly refined pair from Moral Code, featuring classically rugged brogue detailing. Certainly sharp enough for a distillery, a speakeasy or your favorite cocktail bar.
  • The Watch: Carpenter Watches G2 Brooklyn Gent, $724.98 — For a refined evening out and about, only the best leather dress watch will do. Carpenter Watches makes a nuanced, subtle and yet visually interesting timepiece, to say the least.
  • The Everyday Carry Essential: Rustico Traveler’s Notebook and Wanderer Pen, $120 — Especially when visiting a new locale (and even when visiting an old haunt), a stylish leather notebook will come in handy when inspiration strikes — or when you simply want to remember that exact cocktail recipe.
  • The Socks: Taylor Stitch Merino Socks, $22 — Don’t discount the importance of stylish socks, especially this comfortable, anti-odor pair from Taylor Stitch.
  • The Leather Wallet: Bellroy Slim Note Sleeve, $89 — Stay sleek, streamlined and stylish with a slim leather wallet that keeps your valuables safe — no extra bulk required.

From top to bottom, head to toe, I’d say you’re not going to go wrong with this look for an evening enjoying your favorite cocktails. We’re keeping your look fresh and modern by swapping a blazer for a rugged work jacket, and then pairing up that piece with a classic white Oxford shirt for go-anywhere seasonal style (and yes, you can wear that combo at the office, too). From there, slim black jeans help carry the day by providing a nice mix of edgy style and a sharp silhouette — again, critical if you’re visiting a hip haunt in town. Of course, the right pair of rugged leather wingtip boots has to be what makes this outfit all work; the pair shown here from Moral Code are practically begging to be worn out on a fine fall or winter evening. Excellent essentials are also critical to keeping your ensemble streamlined and stylish, from a slim leather wallet to stylish socks and of course, stylish leather notebook to jot down tasting notes, recipes or random musings. And when hitting up your favorite cocktail bar, the small details seemingly get a bit bigger — take your wristwatch, then upgrade it from the average with the best leather dress watch — then prepare to watch the compliments roll in. This ensemble might look a bit different from the look you were first envisioning, and in my mind, that’s A-OK — it’s all about unique style and nuanced, subtle details. This look might even make your whiskey taste that much better — but again, that’s all up to you. Thanks for reading, and happy whiskey hunting (and tasting!).

See Now, Buy Now: This Billy Reid Shirt Jacket Is Your Perfect Fall Layer

A perfectly refined and rugged Billy Reid shirt jacket. It’s that easy for fall.

If there’s one American menswear designer who knows a thing or two about making fall style essentials that are just as rugged and refined — yet versatile — as you need them to be — it’s Alabama-based Billy Reid. The designer has been a longtime favorite of the blog, and with good reason — pieces like the Billy Reid Plaid Mo Shirt Jacket exemplify high quality, classic design, and seasonally friendly appeal, all at once. Long story short: The Plaid Mo Shirt Jacket is one of the best men’s shirt jackets you’re going to invest in this fall — and invest in it you should. After all, the right shirt jacket combines old-school cool with new-school touches — and in the case of this particular shirt jacket, that means a heck of a lot of crucial touches (and none that you don’t need, for that matter).

SHOP: The Billy Reid Plaid Mo Shirt Jacket

A no-frills silhouette made all the better thanks to American-made construction.

The greatness inherent in one of the best shirt jackets starts with a soft, brushed wool fabric blend (in a rich plaid pattern, no less) — this makes this particular outer layer suitable for pairing with everything from your favorite henley to a rugged chambray shirt in equal measure. Large genuine horn buttons give it durability and the crucial added touch that makes it able to stand up on its own (or underneath a tough waxed parka if it gets really nasty out there). Speaking of standing up … flip up the collar on this rugged shirt jacket to reveal a handsome leather lining for a bit of a refined touch. Oh, and be sure to use the front-button chest pockets to handle your everyday carry essentials — there’s no wrong way to go in terms of layering or style points with the Billy Reid Plaid Mo Shirt Jacket, this is undoubtedly true. Right? Right.

The resulting flannel shirt is simply your new favorite shirt for fall, guaranteed.

SHOP: The Wellen Slub Flannel Shirt

A textured construction and engaging colors make this a casually cool, fall-ready flannel.

And about those color options — as one would expect from Wellen Surf, the style points are well-considered, too. That means you’ve got an array of choices, from rich Palm Green (wear it with slim faded denim and nubuck leather chukka boots) to the Montauk Blue Check pattern shown here (pair it up with classic tan chinos and durable high-top sneakers).  Small touches like twill tape collar and placket lining add another visual dimension and nice layering ability, especially on cool fall mornings near the shore or at home. If you were searchign for one of the best flannel shirts to throw on and then forget about, this is your top pick. It’s easygoing and versatile, yet dependable all the while. The Friday Read: Michigan Craft Beer, Shinola’s New Watch & The Best Boots for November

If you didn’t feel in the holiday spirit yet, well, step right this way with these rugged Rancourt boots.

Although I’ll be in Brooklyn this weekend (likely wearing a pair of rugged leather boots very similar to the excellent Rancourt & Co. leather boots shown above!), my mind is back on my home state of Michigan, and in particular, my alma mater, Michigan State University. I was just in East Lansing last weekend for a terrific time with old college friends, filled with beers at HopCat (a staple of my senior year) and Crunchy’s, along with some Michigan State football. It’s of course with football in mind that I’ll be enjoying craft beer back in my new home borough this weekend — it’s Michigan vs. Michigan State on Saturday, after all! It’s a rivalry that meant a lot to me as a student, and means even more now that I’m farther away from campus. I’ll be finding a sports bar in Brooklyn to hunker down for the game, likely followed by a round of (hopefully!) celebratory beers at the always-excellent Threes Brewing. If your plans involve college football as well, I wish you nothing but luck! And if they involve more frenzied pursuits — such as starting your holiday shopping early — then I’d suggest you A) Check out the below Friday Read and B) Check out the never-not-outstanding Huckberry 2019 Gift Guide, packed with gear like the above Rancourt & Co. leather boots, plus plenty of stylish stocking stuffers. In the meantime, the below reading and gear picks ought to get you started — agreed?

  • Let’s get this weekend started accordingly the right way, yes? I’m talking, of course, about one of the best new beers to try now, covered by yours truly at GearMoose. That beer would be the rich, utterly satisfying Perrin Brewing S’more Stout, a fittingly inspired beer for cold Michigan (and New York) winters. I can’t wait to get my hands on some when I’m back in the Mitten State.
  • Speaking of my home state of Michigan — as has been on my mind this week — it only makes sense that Shinola would come up in conversation here. In fact, over at GearMoose once more, I covered the Shinola Bronze Monster, a durable, tough-as-heck timepiece with plenty of style points built right in. Did I mention it draws design inspiration from Detroit’s Prohibition smugglers? Yes, it’s got plenty going for it, too. Wear it with your favorite henley and tough chore pants on a chilly winter weekend.
  • OK, let’s keep it rolling when it comes to rugged weekend gear and perhaps more importantly, rugged winter boots. I covered the Danner Pub Garden Boots here on the blog just last week, and if you missed that feature, now’s your chance to catch up. They’re fit for the trail, the town, and indeed, the pub, easily. They’ll also wear particularly well with, say, a classic Barbour jacket and rugged work pants.

OK, those are all the style quick hits and men’s style news updates I’ve got for you this week. If you’re still searching for the best gifts for everyone on your list (and it never hurts to start as early as possible!), well, then head to my roundup of some of the best gear for November. From flannel shirts to chukka boots to the best whiskey glasses for the spirits lover, that post has something for everyone (if I do say so myself). OK, it’s time to get ready for some football. Cheers!

This merino cashmere beanie is soft, comfortable & utterly critical for fall and winter — the pop of color doesn’t hurt, either.

Tuft & Needle California King Mattress — $750

A truly excellent mattress for a great night’s sleep.

Granted, it’s not every single day that you expect to see a Tuft & Needle mattress on a list of the best new men’s gear, but this just might be one of the best mattresses you can invest in now (and then reap the rewards later, of course).

Tincup American Whiskey — Starting at $25

A bold, rich whiskey that’ll warm you on chilly fall and winter nights.

In addition to stylish accessories, the right spirits can go a long way toward amping up your enjoyment of fall and winter evenings — and Tincup American Whiskey, with its bold flavor and modern approach to heritage whiskey, is the right way to go. Affordably priced for some of the best and most unique whiskey on the planet, Tincup takes its name from an old-school mining town (and the way in which miners would enjoy their whiskey). Using distilled Colorado water also gives this a remarkable flavor — it’s a new fall and winter favorite.

Hanwag Stulben II Boots — $306

Richly crafted leather hiking boots that won’t quit, no matter what.

Among underappreciated brands quietly making some of the best men’s hiking boots on the market, Hanwag might take the cake. These rugged leather hiking boots are dependable enough for the trail with your favorite chore pants, and stylish enough to grab a pint afterward.

#OOTD: Wear This Gear to Layer Up on A Chilly Fall Morning

When you feel it in the air, you just know. That is to say, the sort of cool, crisp fall morning that calls out to be enjoyed with your favorite fall gear picks and a hot cup of coffee in hand as the mist rolls in — that’s quite the idllyic picture to paint, and maybe your weekend morning view looks a bit different (it does for me in Brooklyn!), but the best fall style essentials for a casual weekend can help you gear up any which way you slice it. So today, we’re going with the kind of cozy, casual gear that’ll work well for a weekend coffee date or a cool, laidback morning in equal measure — think of the rugged layers that a menswear hero like Daniel Craig wears in “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” for instance. That is to say, a rugged sweater from Wellen in a fittingly thick knit should wear mighty nicely with a classic chambray shirt for when it’s too cold to do anything but bundle up more. And the rest of these picks are able to go into town or host guests at home, too — take slim faded black jeans and pair them up with classic leather hiking boots to get a dose of functionality and style all at once. Of course, we’ve also got a cozy merino beanie and a tough leather watch standing tall on the accessories front. All you need for the morning is a great cup of coffee, and then in the evening, kick back with a sip of whiskey. This rugged #OOTD will do the rest. Cheers to fall!
