Style Pick of the Week: Outerknown Highline Shirt

A rugged flannel shirt that’s surprisingly easy to layer.

As evidenced by the ever-changing pages of this blog, the search for fall style essentials like the best men’s flannel shirt never really ends, does it? Now is the best time to get one of the best men’s shirts for winter, too. No, sir. It’s a topic we’ve covered with growing frequency as we move into colder weather in earnest, and we’re back again today with the Outerknown Highline Shirt — it’s as pleasingly rugged and sustainable as you can get when it comes to the best flannel shirts out there. If you follow the blog, you’ll recognize Outerknown (just head here to read about one of the best fall jackets from the brand, for instance). It’s the brainchild of legendary surfer Kelly Slater and menswear designer John Moore, and Outerknown blends a distinctly laidback, West Coast and surf culture-inspired ethos with the sort of functionality that’s much-needed during the colder months. To that end, the Outerknown Highline Shirt checks all the right boxes in terms of dependable style and rugged appeal. It’s perhaps the perfect shirt for fall layering, given that it features a blend of organic cotton and linen — that means you should take the Outerknown Highline Shirt for a spin atop a thermal shirt or your favorite henley, or wear it underneath a navy herringbone blazer to blend high-low style with ease.

SHOP: The Outerknown Highline Shirt

The Best Basics. Summer Ready.

Just one of three versatile colors in which you can snag this Outerknown shirt.

So this rugged flannel shirt is actually easy to layer, and it’s also easy to wear in a variety of style situations … but which one of the richly crafted patterns of the Outerknown Highline Shirt should you pick up? The answer could be … all three? I’m personally a fan of the Curry Shady Plaid variety seen at the top of the page, but the choice is yours. Either way, this is a laidback, classic flannel shirt that’s primed to wear with expertly faded jeans and classic high-top sneakers for a fall weekend. The benefits of this shirt don’t stop with the styling potential, however. As you might expect, Outerknown emphasizes using organic materials that benefit the enviroment  — so the Outerknown Highline Shirt has all of that going for it, too. The bottom line is quite simple: When you want to wear the best men’s flannel shirt for a weekend brunch or to a casual office, you’ll want to make it this one.

The Friday Read: A New Shirt Jacket for Fall, The Best Travel Blazer & Big Thief’s New Album

A legendary leather jacket you’re going to want to pre-fund ASAP.

How are you getting ready for fall and winter? Hopefully, with a stylish leather jacket as essential and iconic as the incredible Taylor Stitch Moto Jacket seen above — it’s available now for pre-funding via Taylor Stitch, everyone’s favorite menswear brand. And did I mention it’s one of the best leather jackets this menswear writer has seen in some time? This latest release is no different, and it could just be your new favorite leather jacket … easily, at that. So, that’s setting the stage style-wise for a great fall weekend. What’s on your agenda? For this menswear and craft beer writer, I’m looking forward to closing out a busy week the right way. For one, I returned from lovely Asheville, North Carolina on Monday, where I spent the weekend in the rolling mountains of western North Carolina for my good friend and former college journalism colleague Dillon Davis’ wedding! For the wedding and the weekend, I made good use of my Taylor Stitch Telegraph Jacket, and for exploring Asheville, I wore some classic leather boots (Clarks Originals Wallabee Boots, to be exact), while also checking out prime craft beer spots like the Belgian ale mecca that is Thirsty Monk. If you saw all the fun on my Instagram, you know that Asheville has a wealth of craft beer riches and beautiful scenery.

The Best Basics. Summer Ready.

So, that was last weekend. And this week has been plenty eventful, including a string of incredible indie rock shows at my favorite venue on the planet, Brooklyn Steel! Namely, Tuesday night saw a triumphant return to the stage by ethereal British indie rockers Bombay Bicycle Club (an old college favorite!), while Wednesday saw yet another excellent Brooklyn Steel show by indie rock luminaries Big Thief (more on them in a moment!). There’s nothing I love more than a transcendent rock show, and there’s no better way to enjoy a night out in Brooklyn, in my opinion. Add in the fact that the newly opened 18th Ward Brewing is right by Brooklyn Steel to upgrade your craft beer experience, and you’ve got the makings of a perfect night. But I digress — it’s time to dive into today’s Friday Read to get the weekend started. Cheers!

  • Finding the right blazer to wear for travel — the type of stylish blazer you can wear both on and off the plane or train or automobile — is tricky. Not so anymore thanks to the Tact & Stone Traveler Blazer, a wildly comfortable and polished blazer made in travel-ready fabric. Wear it over a merino T-shirt with slim faded jeans and classic chukka boots for style that’s easygoing yet sharp, no matter where you go — and of course, learn more via my latest GearMoose briefing in the meantime.
  • Durable layers are a must for a fall weekend, especially if you want to gear up with your favorite henley or your new favorite pants for fall — and in that regard, the Proof Reversible Shirt Jacket seems to check all the right boxes. Helpfully, I covered that crucial piece for GearMoose. Happy layering!
  • I mentioned my new favorite indie rock band, Big Thief, above; given that they’re releasing their SECOND album this year on today of all days, it seems fitting to recommend this driving indie rock track, “Forgotten Eyes,” off that second album. Two incredible albums in one year is more than we could ever ask for — enjoy!

So, we’ve covered indie rock, we’ve covered craft beer, we’ve covered essential fall layers … I’ll leave you with one last briefing covering the durable pants you need to buy for fall. If you read the blog, you’ll recognize these as some of the best pants for the season. That being said, it simply doesn’t get much better than the Proof Rover Pants, especially if you’ve got a busy weekend of tailgates or brewery visits on the horizon — I’ll see you at the next IPA tasting. Again, cheers and thanks for reading!

#OOTD: Try Out This New Way to Wear an Old-School Western Shirt

Quick, think of the array of stylish men’s shirts you’ve likely got in your closet for fall. From a classic Oxford shirt to your favorite chambray shirt, perhaps you feel like you’ve got plenty of options, right? Particularly when it comes to casually rugged fall style, too? Well, think again, because I’d wager you don ‘t yet have a classic Western shirt like the Levi’s x Outerknown Wellthread Western Shirt — it’s the centerpiece of today’s #OOTD, and it’s the perfect shirt to carry you through many a fall style situation. To wit: The Western shirt is a somewhat overlooked style staple (at least in my book), one that often calls to mind denim-on-denim — and not done the right way, either. But the Western shirt is a prime fall style move, especially when worn as you’ll see it today. What do we mean specifically? Well, the Levi’s x Outerknown Wellthread Western Shirt is different than your typical Western shirt, made from textured fabric in a pleasing fall color — the kind that’s going to stand out whether you wear this look on a weekend coffee date, a brewery outing or an upstate weekend getaway (or some combination of all three, at that). The point is that the best Western shirt out there is visually interesting, slightly edgy & thoroughly classic — exactly what you need to add to your rotation of fall style essentials. Let’s get to the full #OOTD below.

Rugged gear picks to shift how you think about wearing a Western shirt.

  • The Western Shirt: Levi’s x Outerknown Wellthread Western Shirt, $128 — Shaking up the way you wear your Western shirt often starts with reaching for a different option altogether — and Levi’s x Outerknown deliver a stylish, sustainable, rugged AND visually interesting choice here.
  • The Henley: Wellen Hemp Long-Sleeve Henley, $39.98 — Rugged, classic and every bit as sustainable as the Western shirt you’re pairing it with, this is your new favorite henley for fall.
  • The Pants: Taylor Stitch Camp Pants, $128 — Now, your choice of rugged fall pants is entirely up to you here — you could also go with slim tan chinos or classic blue denim,  but it’s tough to top the versatile appeal of the Taylor Stitch Camp Pants.
  • The Jacket: Taylor Stitch Long Haul Jacket in Indigo Waffle, $188 — Let’s go for two in a row when it comes to rugged Taylor Stitch gear. The Taylor Stitch Long Haul Jacket has long been a personal favorite, and this richly textured take is no different. Perfect to wear with your new favorite henley for fall.
  • The Boots: Astorflex Bootflex Boots, $195 — Are these Astorflex Bootflex Boots some of the best leather boots for fall? Yes. Will you want to wear them all the time, even aside from this #OOTD? Also, yes. The perfect pair of fall footwear.
  • The Watch: VAER Watches Heritage Watch, $176.98 — Only one of the best men’s leather watches will do in this case, and this rugged VAER watch is a perfect complement to the rest of these fall style essentials.
  • The Beard Oil: Duluth Trading Co. Spit and Polish Beard Oil, $19.95 — Fall is as great a time as any to get your facial hair in fine form, and Duluth Trading Co. has come through with an excellent new beard oil to help you do just that.
  • The Grooming Essential: Duke Cannon Trench Warfare Natural Charcoal Deodorant, $12 — I’ve long been a fan of Duke Cannon’s rugged and essential grooming products, and this highly effective natural charcoal deodorant is no different. The perfect way to round out an #OOTD.

So, are you onboard with the Levi’s x Outerknown Wellthread Western Shirt and the potential it brings to the table? While at first simple, these top gear picks really are as good as it gets, and they’re as primed for a weekend of fall adventures, from your favorite park to a new art museum and evening cocktails, as you are. Layer up with your new favorite henley for fall and then get out there — that combo offers protection from the elements should you need it, and the Taylor Stitch Long Haul Jacket is a crucial fall outerwear pick-up. It adds a ton of visual interest to this look, and the Taylor Stitch Camp Pants are a necessary fall accessory in this instance — they’re ready to get outdoors or go all around town, and look great while doing it. With an #OOTD like this, there’s also no better fall footwear option than some of the best leather boots for fall, guaranteed. What’s more, essential accessories like one of the best men’s leather watches help drive home the true versatility and style of this outfit — you’re going to stand out the right way, truly. To keep your mug fresh, turn toward a standout new beard oil from Duluth Trading Co. (a move you won’t regret, trust me) and then be sure to use an equally excellent natural charcoal deodorant from Duke Cannon — got all of that down? Great: It’s time to get out there and enjoy fall.

See Now, Buy Now: This New Taylor Stitch Shirt is Your Favorite Fall Shirt — Guaranteed

A newly iconic shirt in a perfect fall texture.

If you pass through the digital pages of The Style Guide with any regularity, you’ll know we love the work being done by the San Francisco-based team at Taylor Stitch. It nearly goes without saying, but they produce some of the best men’s gear (and the best men’s shirts!) your money can buy. And on that note, well, that’s where the Taylor Stitch Jack Shirt comes into play. Specifically, the Jack Shirt in Heather Ash Waffle — it’s richly crafted, it’s endlessly versatile, and as the headline says above, it’s your new favorite shirt, guaranteed. As per usual, that would, at first glance, seem to be overly high praise … but again, Taylor Stitch can back it up.
The Best Basics. Summer Ready.

Where does it all start when it comes to one of the best men’s shirts for fall? It starts, naturally, with the rich and rugged fabric. For those days when you want to add some variety to your everyday #OOTD, the Taylor Stitch Jack Shirt in Heather Ash Waffle is just what the doctor ordered. Made from 100 percent organic cotton in a  pleasing-but-not-too-heavy 6.5oz. weight, it’s got the perfect texture to wear on its own or layer up over a rugged henley — that’s fall style at its best, if you ask me.

SHOP: The Taylor Stitch Jack Shirt in Heather Ash Waffle

The stylish shirt to wear all fall.

The fit of the Taylor Stitch Jack Shirt is also perfectly on-point, trim and tailored but not too tight in the slightest (I go with a size 40 for reference — see how I style it on Instagram). And when it comes to seasonal versatility, this new take on the Taylor Stitch Jack Shirt has that in spades. Case in point: You  can wear this classic fall shirt with slim dark denim or olive chinos on its own through the weekend, or layer it up with a classic navy blazer and tan five-pocket pants to head to the office. It adds just enough variety and visual interest compared to more straightforward shirts, and in my book, that makes it a winner — big-time. Shake up your fall style ASAP with what could just be your new favorite shirt.

Style Pick of the Week: Schott NYC Vintage Fitted Motorcycle Jacket

An iconic jacket you need to add to your cart — or your wish list.

Ladies and gentleman, today’s Style Pick of the Week is instantly covetable, highly classic and vying for the top spot on your list of your favorite menswear for any time of year, all at once. It’s the Schott NYC Vintage Fitted Motorcycle Jacket (also known as the Schott Perfecto), and it’s the best leather jacket your money can buy. The even better news? It’s now being sold by your favorite online retailer, Huckberry (they are your favorite, right?). But more on all that in a moment. The Schott Perfecto is a timeless style staple with a reputation that precedes itself, one that dates back decades. You’ve seen this jacket immortalized onscreen by Marlon Brandon and James Dean, and you’ve perhaps seen the classic Schott Perfecto in more recent years on The Killers’ Brandon Flowers (where I first spotted it years ago). In short, it’s an unimpeachable jacket you’ll be very glad you bought heading into fall. And if you’ve been thinking about dipping your toes into the waters of the coveted, badass leather moto jacket, there’s no better purchase to pick up right now (for a price, mind you) than this Schott Vintage Motorcycle Jacket. What sets this iconic jacket apart from the pack? The list is long and varied, my friends.

SHOP: The Schott Perfecto Jacket

The difference comes down to the details — and the details of the Schott Perfecto are simply legendary.

For one, the iconic Schott Perfecto is so named because of the rich, tough-as-nails cowhide Perfecto leather, the kind of leather that’ll adhere to your movements and wearing patterns over time — exactly as the legends who wore this jacket knew so well. It’s all done up in a truly badass and road-ready biker jacket silhouette, with the sort of pedigree and construction that allows one to actually wear it when riding a motorcycle. And if that’s not your thing, the Schott Perfecto adds some seriously cool style to your ensemble, no matter where you take it.  At a rock concert with a classic chambray shirt and slim black denim? This leather moto jacket is your best friend. Heading out for a fall Old Fashioned on a chilly night? Wear this thing over a thermal henley for easygoing-yet-cool style — the 100 percent cotton flannel lining (in a fitting red plaid) adds some warmth for the season. The nickel-plated brass hardware and custom “SCHOTT” snaps are all one-of-a-kind, too. This jacket is built to last for years to come, so it’s absolutely worth the investment. Fear not, because if there’s one thing I can guarantee, it’s that you’re going to wear the heck of out the Schott NYC Vintage Fitted Motorcycle Jacket — year after year after year.

The Friday Read: The Best Chore Coats, The Top Shirt Jackets for Fall & A New Beer to Enjoy Now

The best way to gear up for fall on the outerwear front? Quite possibly.

We’ll kick off today’s Friday Read in suitably rugged fashion given that we’ve moved into October — namely, you could do worse to layer up for fall than by grabbing one of the best waxed trucker jackets on the market … yes, the utterly classic Flint and Tinder Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker Jacket. It’s as good as it gets for rugged weekend adventures (and weekday commutes, too). It’s been a longtime favorite of the blog, and I’ll be wearing it the next time I’m back in Brooklyn. Reason being, I’ll be on the road this weekend heading to North Carolina for the wedding of my great college friend and former journalism colleague Mr. Dillon Davis! The wedding takes place outside Asheville in the lovely mountains of Western North Carolina — of course, I’ll be dressed in style and am even planning to break out my Taylor Stitch Telegraph Jacket. To follow along with my fall wedding style moves, check out my Instagram. Have any suggestions for what to see or where to go in Asheville? Let me know, as I’m looking forward to using some free time to check out the Asheville craft beer scene with another great college friend, beer writer extraordinaire Mr. Pat Evans! It’ll be a great trip and a great time to celebrate Dillon’s wedding and see so many old friends. I can’t wait! Of course, in the meantime, we’ll still have tomorrow’s Style Pick of the Week incoming — and there’s still plenty to enjoy from the below men’s style reads, too. Like what you see? Thanks for stopping through!

  • As I mentioned, we’ve got a lot of ground to cover when it comes to stylish fall layers — and it’s with that approach in mind that I covered the very best chore coats from some of my favorite brands within the rugged confines of GearMoose. ‘Tis the season, after all!
  • Let’s keep it rolling with more essential fall outerwear, shall we? In this case, I also wrote about some of the best, toughest shirt jackets on the market for The Manual — within that piece, you’ll find plenty of helpful, warm and durable options from brands like Taylor Stitch & Flint and Tinder. Read on and study up!
  • We’re about more than just menswear here on the blog — if you read the site regularly, you know this to be true. So, let’s turn our attention toward a seriously fun, limited-edition beer that’ll add some refreshment and enjoyment to your craft beer rotation. That is to say, when you want to switch it up from a typical IPA or pilsner, reach for the Pulped Fiction Berliner Weisse (particularly if you  live in a  warmer climate). It’s light, refreshing and juicy — and it’s my latest beer entry for GearMoose! Bottoms up.

Alright, so we’ve talked craft beer and tough shirt jackets and the best waxed jackets aplenty — with that being said, I’ll leave you with one last roundup of the best new men’s gear for fall. There’s no time to waste, folks. Have a great weekend!

Now, just because we talked above about the best white sneakers doesn’t mean we’re giving up on tried-and-true fall dressing entirely. Case in point: This rich, dark blue pair of classic raw denim from Mott and Bow. Perhaps the best men’s jeans to wear all fall.

Good + Well Supply Co. Sequoia National Park Candle — $36

A simple, subtle way to upgrade your home this fall.

As to be expected, scented candles for fall are all the rage right now — so don’t be surprised if this one is sold out. That being said, a candle is a perfectly simple way to upgrade your home, seeing as it’s inspired by an American treasure.

Howler Brothers Merlin Jacket —$199

Finding an affordable long-sleeve henley can be tough — but in terms of sustainability and style, Wellen is unmatched. This is the rugged fall henley to wear all season.

Obermeyer Carson Down Vest — $129

A casual, cool, adventure-ready vest.

In the way of essential fall layers, it’s tough to go wrong with a rugged, insulated vest for fall — especially this retro-inspired, colorblocked number for fall.

Howler Brothers Howler Club Snapback — $30

A cool canvas cap for a fall weekend.

We’ll close out today’s roundup of the best men’s gear with a casual fall weekend cap, crafted with retro style and laidback sensibility in mind. Throw on this Howler Brothers cap (yes, more from that brand!) to grab some beers at your favorite bar.

Alright,  now mark my words … that was a HECK of a lot of classic fall gear to sort through, was it not? #OOTD: How to Dress for a Fall Weekend Wedding

Perhaps you’ve had the save-the-date on your calendar or on your fridge for a while — the antipation of a fall wedding growing by the day. But the age-old question looms: What am I going to wear to this shindig? Perhaps it’s outdoors on a rolling farm or a large estate, maybe it’s downtown followed by a reception long into the night — either way, you need the right gear picks (including one of the best men’s blazers) to carry you through the only way you know how … in style. An  since dressing for a fall wedding also involves nodding to the season without going overboard, you’ll find, stylish, classic picks like a textured cotton shirt and a stylish wool tie, all the better to take on what could be a chilly wedding. At the least, it’s going to be slightly breezier than average, so I think you’ll find the Taylor Stitch Gibson Jacket is well-suited to fall’s demands (and perhaps for traveling a long way to said wedding, too). The other picks in this #OOTD, as you’ll see are geared to help you tackle the season in style, including classic chukka boots and some tailored chinos to tie everything together nicely. This is all dependent on the dress code, of course, but I think with this ensemble, you’ll stay put-together without one-upping anyone (or sacrificing comfort). What more can you ask for, really?

The right mix of versatile, casual gear for a fall wedding.

  • The Jacket: Taylor Stitch Gibson Jacket, $298 — Looking for the perfect fall travel jacket … even the sort you can wear on the plane and then wear to a fall wedding? Well, here you go. The Taylor Stitch Gibson Jacket is one of the best men’s blazers on the market.
  • The Shirt: Wellen Organic Hemp Denim Shirt, $78 — Whether you go with a classic denim shirt or not can depend on the wedding itself, but this textured cotton shirt pairs very well with the colder climes of fall (in most places, that is).
  • The Tie: Neck & Tie Co. Matrix Necktie, $29 — It seems some times, a tie is optional at a fall wedding — but it’s always nice to go more tailored, and this stylish wool tie is a handsome change of pace given the season.
  • The Pants: Proof Nomad Pants, $78 — Does any guy ever look bad in tailored grey chinos? Nope, no sir. This cool color palette works well for fall, allowing those classic chukka boots to really pop. Speaking of …
  • The Dress Boots: Rhodes Felix Chukka Boots, $198 — Can your wear suede chukka boots to a fall wedding? Of course — especially when they’re sleek and yet versatile, a la the Rhodes Felix Chukka Boots.
  • The Watch: Armogan Regalia Watch, $220 — When you want to look your best, a classic leather dress watch is simply the only way to go — that’s all there is to it.
  • The Grooming Essential: Alder New York Everyday Face Moisturizer, $32 — The advent of chilly weather means you need to keep your face looking fresh. Alder New York can help with that.
  • The Travel Essential: Bellroy Dopp Kit, $55 — Hitting the road for a wedding is no excuse not to look your best — take along this stylish dopp kit to carry all your grooming essentials, will you?

So, as we said, a fall wedding can tie in multiple demands when it comes to style — perhaps you’re traveling a long way, or dealing with some unexpectedly chilly weather. Either way, the perfect fall travel jacket is going to help you tackle both those extremes — not to mention the wedding ceremony itself. That mix of versatility is key if you want to pack light (and really, who doesn’t?). That’s also an area in which a classic denim shirt can add some casual flair, while also still dressing up nicely thanks to a stylish wool tie — make no mistake, it’s all about texture and fall-ready style. In that case, classic chukka boots in a rich suede are possibly the perfect pair of fall boots for the occasion. We’re talking timeless style, seasonally friendly texture and a relatively sleek look that won’t quit — yes, even out on the dance floor. Because looking great is often all about the little things, a classic leather dress watch is a fitting way to tie this outfit together. Before you leave for the night, reach for a classic face moisturizer from Alder New York, and be sure to pack it all in your stylish dopp kit. From A-to-Z, top-to-bottom, this is the right way to dress for a fall wedding — guaranteed. What do you say? Let me know on Twitter.

The tough styling potential and functionality you’ll need all fall.

They’ve got the classic five-pocket design of denim, and yet the tailored cut of chinos — and we haven’t even discussed the exceptional fabric used to craft the Proof Rover Pants. It’s a specially engineered fabric made with cotton, Sorbek and lycra for durability, a hint of stretch & ease of movement. Throw in the fact that these rugged work pants feature a gusseted crotch and darted knee seams, and you’ve got a pair of pants that you can actually wear to, y’know, tackle yard work … or simply tackle another IPA at your favorite brewery.

The rivet points on the Proof Rover Pants are also sturdy and tough, while the fabric is custom pigment-dyed — that means these slim fall trousers are going to break in like your favorite pair of jeans, month after month … after month. And what’s more, they retail for under $100 at Huckberry, a heck of a deal when you consider how much you can wear ’em (every day of the week??). And one last point: I just might have to get a pair of Proof Rover Pants in every color, seeing as the rich options (from Midnight Navy to Khaki) are as versatile as can be. Hopefully, that captures why I love the Proof Rover Pants so much — and why you might feel the same way. Cheers!
