Style Pick of the Week: American Provenance Beard Oil – The Best Natural Beard Oil

Finding the best beard oil can be tricky enough on its own, no matter if you’ve been bearded for years (as I have!) or if you set out on a quest to grow a beard during quarantine and the pandemic. Any sort of facial hair requires men’s grooming essentials aplenty, as we all know, and I’m here to introduce you in today’s Style Pick of the Week to your new favorite grooming brand: American Provenance. We’ll go deeper into how and why the brand is making the best natural beard oil right here in the States, but embark with me on a brief history lesson first. The Wisconsin-based brand has been making waves in the men’s grooming space in recent years, and it doesn’t hurt that they’re well-known for that hard-to-find, all-natural grooming approach.

American Provenance was founded by former middle school science teacher Kyle LaFond, who realized his students had been using grooming products packed with harmful chemicals. Hence, the all-natural approach to making the best beard oil for men, not to mention the best natural deodorant, lip balm, pomade, hand sanitizer and more. I’ve had the chance to test out the brand in recent months, and have been mighty impressed with the quality and feel of these products, plus the rugged, masculine but not over-the-top range of versatile scents (note the Firepits and Flannels scent at the top of the page). It’s all dialed in nicely with the American Provenance Natural Beard Oil, a perfect remedy to sooth itchy skin and a coarse beard. In fact, it’s become my new favorite beard oil. Why’s that? Read on to find out more.

SHOP: The American Provenance Natural Beard Oil

For starters, the American Provenance Natural Beard Oil gets a lot of things right, including the use of rich natural botanicals that penetrate deep in your hair follicles, softening the skin in the process. Shea butter, coconut oil and almond oil, which all happen to be natural softening ingredients, hydrate and moisturize your beard. Coming from personal experience, it’s an impact you can feel right away, and that’s just one of the reasons it’s quickly become my new favorite beard oil. I also appreciate the range of scents in which you can pick up this highly effective beard oil, including the aforementioned Firepits and Flannels. You can also select from clever names like Shotguns and Shenanigans (that one features peppermint & eucalyptus), plus Fastballs and Fisticuffs (lemongrass and marjorjam).

Taken all together, the American Provenance Natural Beard Oil is easy to use, easy to stock up on (you can subscribe and save online), and easy to love. It’s highly effective, and that all-natural approach is absolutely critical these days. Do your face, your beard and yourself a favor, and pick up the best beard oil on the market. If you really do love it, let me know in the comments below.

The Friday Read: Mott and Bow Men’s Jeans, Buck Mason Trail Shorts & the Best New Overshirt

Mott & Bow: The best jeans for men and women at a fraction of the price | CNN

There’s no time to waste on a summer Friday, so thanks for joining us for today’s Friday Read. I’ve certainly kept busy on the writing front this week (check out my latest for The Manual and Maxim here), but as ever, that’s no excuse not to dress in style. If you agree, and I think you should, (that’s why we’re here with today’s blog, after all!), then there’s one place to go to stay cool and stylish in the heat this weekend. That’d be with a pair of Mott and Bow men’s jeans, a nicely priced, super-premium way to get jeans in multiple fits (from Slim and Straight to Skinny) and washes for every occasion and wardrobe. Consider this my recommendation to start your weekend, one you’re likely familiar with if you caught my post on the best pocket T-shirt for summer earlier this week. It’s always worth reconsidering a brand that does one thing so well, so think of this endorsement like my own Mott and Bow review. What are you waiting for? The clock is ticking, and so is the time to start planning your own stylish weekend.

Start your weekend with Mott and Bow denim

Now, onto the next order of business here in my weekly recap. I’ve got another recommendation for you to kick things off, especially if you’re inclined to tune in to some music throughout the weekend. As you very well might know, I author a twice-weekly music-menswear-craft beer newsletter, The Style Guide In Brief, which covers my favorite bands and my favorite menswear in turn (bands like The Strokes, essentials like a stylish denim jacket). It’s worth subscribing if you pull your style inspiration from the stage, or if you just want a listening recommendation and a new beer to try throughout the weekend.

Mack Weldon

I’ll be working on the next edition prior to tomorrow morning, when it’ll hit your inbox. I’m also going to take the rest of the weekend to write, pack and relax (hopefully, in that order) — I’m hitting the road for a family trip to the great “Up North” of Michigan. To see how that trip goes next week, be sure to give me a follow on Instagram! As for now, here’s the rest of today’s recommended Friday reading and shopping. Enjoy and thanks for reading!

  • No summer adventure, and least of all not in a place like Michigan (or really, anywhere with idyllic lakes and wide-open spaces) is complete without the right pair of shorts. Buck Mason has solved this quite handily, as you’ll see in its New Arrivals Section. The Buck Mason Barstow Trail Roam Shorts are a new step into rugged, sporty and ever-so-slightly outdoorsy territory for the famed American retailer, makers of some of the best men’s jeans. Made from a four-way stretch nylon blend, they’re meant to mimic standard issue Marine Corps shorts. They also feature a hidden zip cord pocket and a mobile-yet-tailored fit. They’re your new favorite pair of shorts, no doubt about it.
  • Here’s another recommendation that works both right now and later on this fall and winter. This certainly won’t be the last time you read about the rugged, durable and seriously cool Filson Denim Work Shirt, which is the type of layer you can wear atop a Filson T-shirt for later summer, then continue wearing with a hard-working Filson thermal shirt when temperatures cool off. I’m excited to get my hands on one for testing soon, and you can be sure the results will be hitting the pages of this blog sooner rather than later.

  • I talked above about the importance of finding one of the best pairs of jeans for men, but it can be easier said than done at times. That’s where my latest guide for Fatherly — a really excellent parenting and lifestyle site for guys (and really, anyone!) comes into play. I covered a crucial ensemble, the best jeans and T-shirt combinations for men, with enough picks at every price point and to satisfy every taste and style. Let me know what you think of my picks on Twitter. Cheers!

As I’ve said in the past, covering lots of ground in the menswear world can be daunting. Allow me to help, particularly with my recent guide to the best menswear to buy now at Taylor Stitch. We’re talking versatile, well-made men’s style essentials you can either buy or pre-fund now, and then wear to your heart’s content season after season. Once again, if you take the plunge with menswear from Taylor Stitch, let me know on Twitter. That’ll wrap up today’s’ Friday Read. Enjoy the weekend, my friends!

The Thursday Buy: Get the Bonobos Riviera Swim Trunks for your Next Beach Getaway

If you thought the time had come and gone to outfit yourself with a pair of the best men’s swim trunks for a beach vacation, rest assured: That ship hasn’t quite sailed yet. The Bonobos Riviera Swim Trunks check plenty of the right boxes if you want to give your swimwear a shot in the arm before Labor Day. And of course, if you live in a lovely coastal climate, you’re getting a pair of the best swim trunks for men that you can wear all year long. It’s a win-win situation any way you slice it, and that’s the only way Bonobos does things.

Now, you might be wondering why you would consider buying your new favorite pair of swim trunks from a brand commonly known for some of the best men’s chinos and even stylish shorts, right? It’s a fair question, but Bonobos has dialed in the formula as far as well-fitting items for your bottom half, swimwear very much included. Exhibit A would be, of course, the Bonobos Riviera Swim Trunks , which feature about as many different options and all the styling potential of your trusted Bonobos shorts. The 5-inch, 7-inch and 9-inch inseam options are all excellent as far as trends are concerned (if you’re taller, go with a 9-inch inseam, and if you want to stick with trends, opt for 5 inches). And that’s not all the Bonobos Riviera Swim Trunks have to offer. Scroll on to figure out the rest.

SHOP: The Bonobos Riviera Swim Trunks

The well-made Bonobos Riviera Swim Trunks also offer up a nice blend of sustainability and style, starting with the fact that they’re made from 85 percent recycled polyester. Small details like side-seam pockets give these swim trunks a streamlined appearance, not unlike those tailored chino shorts you’ll be wearing away from the water. The tailored cut of these trunks makes them a reliable option to keep on wearing as you grab post-beach beers, though. The elastic waistband is a comfortable must-have these days, and the contrasting interior color is a small touch fashion aficionados will appreciate.

The hits keep coming, though. The Bonobos Riviera Swim Trunks are available in a whopping and nearly astounding 36 colors and prints, enough to satisfy even dressers who want truly eye-catching style. The possibilities are nearly endless, and it gets even better when you consider the price. The Bonobos Riviera Swim Trunks retail for $85 at Bonobos, more than fair when you take a look at the quality design. As you shop for these swim shorts, consider picking up a Bonobos T-shirt to accompany you as you head to the beach — it’s can’t-miss style move that’ll pay major dividends.

See Now, Buy Now: The Mott and Bow Carlton Pocket Tee is an Essential Summer T-shirt

If you think you’ve figured out, say, the best men’s jeans for summer or perhaps the best lightweight chinos, why not look for the perfect complementary piece: One of the coolest T-shirts for men, the classic and highly wearable pocket T-shirt. The pocket T-shirt is just like your regular T-shirt, except when, well, it’s not. In the case of the Mott and Bow Carlton Pocket T-shirt, it’s anything but ordinary — kind of like other Mott and Bow style staples. This is great news as we move through the rest of summer and head slowly but surely towards Labor Day. What are you going to wear in the meantime? Well, besides picture-perfect Mott and Bow men’s denim, I’d wager one of the best pocket T-shirts for men is as solid a bet as any. Especially if it’s laidback and ever-so-slightly rugged style you seek, the pocket tee is a perfect move (just look at how sharply dressed, cool-as-can-be celebs like Ryan Gosling rock a pocket T-shirt, after all).

america

Yessir, you need a pocket T-shirt or two in your life, and it helps if the makers of your favorite jeans are on hand to provide a perfect option for you. What makes the Mott and Bow Carlton Pocket Tee a must-buy? Reader, it’s all in the details.

SHOP: The Mott and Bow Carlton Pocket Tee

The Mott and Bow Carlton Pocket Tee, like I mentioned above, is anything but your average T-shirt. Mott and Bow men’s jeans offer plenty of bang for your buck at attractive prices, and the same can be said about Mott and Bow T-shirts (the Mott and Bow Carlton Pocket Tee retails for $35). Of course, it helps that you can wear your jeans with a T-shirt and look great, but it’s more than that. The combed cotton construction is surprisingly soft, yet this tee is sturdy enough to be worn on its own without looking like you’re wearing an undershirt.

Shop Pact Today.

It’s a substantial T-shirt that will hold its shape, from the collar to the hem and sleeves, without stretching out. And while the fit isn’t skin-tight, it’s a nicely tailored T-shirt that looks cool and Gosling-esque, not sloppy. The pocket itself separates this T-shirt from a sea of similar options, making it very likely your new favorite pocket T-shirt. Mott and Bow calls it a “luxurious everyday tee,” and having tested this tea out myself, I tend to agree. The Mott and Bow Carlton Pocket Tee is also available in classic and standard colors, all the better if you’re looking for ways to wear a T-shirt with jeans. No matter how you choose to rock this tee, it’ll prove a style you find yourself wearing again and again the rest of summer.

#OOTD: How to Wear Chinos for Men Right Now

Look, there are certain menswear essentials a guy just has to rely on nearly every single day. You’ve got to be able to count on certain building blocks of your wardrobe to come through in the clutch, be it casual days at the office, late summer weekend hangouts or really, anything in between. Enter my guide on how to wear chinos for men, and let’s specifically take a deeper dive into the “chinos” that aren’t exactly like the chinos you wore in days gone by (perhaps baggy and with pleats, right?). The pants in today’s #OOTD are the stellar Flint and Tinder 365 Pants, which are less like full-on chinos and more like a nice blend between your favorite pair of denim and dress pants. Think of this like a Flint and Tinder review, or else, a buying guide about how to look great when wearing chinos. It can be done, folks, and that’s especially true if you’re wearing them with other classics, like the best chukka boots for men.

Now, I’ve waxed poetic here on the blog about the best pants for men on the market, like the very pants you’re about to read about today. They’re a versatile cross between rugged and refined, ready for adventure (even if adventure just happens to be kicking back at a brewery patio). Plus, the Flint and Tinder 365 Pants can be mixed and matched to your heart’s content, whether you wear ’em with a T-shirt and a trucker jacket, or with a classic Oxford shirt. If your wardrobe feels a bit stale, then adding some utility and versatility via the Flint and Tinder 365 Pants is the way to go. Check out today’s #OOTD, then give me a follow on Twitter to tell me if it’s what you’re looking for these days.

  • The Chinos: Flint and Tinder 365 Pants, $98 — There really is a ton to love about the iconic Flint and Tinder 365 Pants, including the fact that they’re made with a blend of cotton and spandex for ease of movement. They’re also available in three fits, a wide range of sizes and plenty of colors for every style. Let’s go with classic Navy here.
  • The T-Shirt: Proof 72-Hour Merino Tee, $72 — Haven’t yet tried the perfect-fitting, moisture-wicking, endlessly versatile Proof 72-Hour Merino Tee? Now’s your chance, because this tee is polished enough to wear to the office (when layered the right way) and cool enough to wear to the bar.
  • The Casual Jacket: Relwen Windbreak Blazer, $261 — Here’s where you can customize your outfit when it comes to how to wear men’s chinos. This casual cotton blazer is ideal to wear for a laidback return to the office, but it’s rugged and laidback enough to work during off-duty gatherings, too.
  • The Chukka Boots: Red Wing Heritage Weekender Chukka Boots, $230 — A go-anywhere pair of rugged men’s chukka boots is exactly what this look needs. Like the Relwen blazer shown above, these have enough polish for a casual workplace and enough style points for happy hour.
  • The Watch: Shinola Monster Automatic, $1,450 — Here’s even more rugged versatility at play. This luxury dive watch is truly a “wear anywhere, wear with anything” kind of timepiece, and it could become your new everyday watch to wear into fall and winter.
  • The Socks: American Trench Retro Stripe Socks, $12.50 — No great #OOTD is complete without a pair of the best socks for men, the kind you can wear with anything (like rugged chukka boots and chinos).
  • The Everyday Carry: Filson Rugged Twill Tote, $195 — Look, no matter where you’re going, be it to the office or to a weekend getaway, you need a handy way to haul your gear. Enter this true everyday carry essential, one you’ll have for years to come.
  • The Sunglasses: Taylor Stitch Nelson Sunglasses, $298 — Believe you me, it’s more than worth investing in a pair of the coolest men’s sunglasses, especially if they come from Taylor Stitch. This collaboration pair, made with luxury eyewear brand Dom Vetro, is a sharp way to accessorize from summer into early fall.

It’s high time you geared up for the (eventual) end of summer and the start of early fall. How best to do that? By wearing classic menswear picks that actually work as well in September and October as they do right now. The key behind it all, naturally, has got to be the Flint and Tinder 365 Pants, which wear like jeans, look like chinos and perform stylishly no matter what. The comfortable, wear-with-anything Proof 72-Hour Merino Tee is your next move, because it’s wearable for days on end, it wicks away sweat and it looks mighty fine with a blazer (like the casual cotton blazer shown above) or something a little more rugged, like the classic Flint and Tinder Waxed Trucker Jacket (it’s also worth buying one of those right now, in preparation for fall). The only pair of shoes you need to lace up with this look would be durable, dependable chukka boots, which wear pretty nicely with the best socks for men (it helps that the socks are American-made, too).

Splurge just a little bit on a luxury dive watch you can team with looks dressy and casual. The same can be said for the truly versatile and hard-working Filson Rugged Twill Tote shown here. The final piece is a standout, instantly recognizable pair of the coolest men’s sunglasses, which are certainly more than worth the investment. At the end of the day, the best menswear is the kind that’s versatile, fairly priced and able to be worn anywhere. This #OOTD checks all the right boxes, I’d say. Happy shopping!

Classic Men's Clothing | Taylor Stitch…

Over the past year and change, loungewear has taken on, well, a whole new meaning and a life of its own. Well, for starters, it’s produced with care by Taylor Stitch, in exactly the same manner as the brand’s other rugged gear picks (think waxed trucker jackets, slim selvedge denim and more). The Taylor Stitch Fillmore Collection, what with an essential crewneck sweatshirt, a pair of stylish and well-made lounge pants, and an expertly crafted hoodie, really is a cut above the rest, starting with the fabric on offer here. It’s 100 percent organic cotton French Terry, truly a super-soft, super-comfortable loungewear must-have for your wardrobe.

The Sunday Sale: Pre-Fund and Save on the Best Men’s Leather Jacket at Taylor Stitch

I don’t know about you, but I tend to run hot in the summer months. It’s for precisely that reason that it might seem a tad bit unusual to be talking about one of the best leather jackets for men, but rest assured that we’re doing so with good reason in today’s Sunday Sale. Any time Taylor Stitch pulls back the curtain on the ever-so-cool Taylor Stitch Workshop, it’s absolutely worth seeing what’s in store. And in the case of today’s featured menswear deal, it’s the Taylor Stitch Bomber Jacket in Whiskey Suede, one of the best men’s leather jackets out there. As luck would have it, it’s also on sale for 20 percent off right now, as great a deal as you’re apt to find on one of the best leather jackets for men. That discount takes the price down to $638 from $798, not a bad deal in the slightest.

Like all Taylor Stitch outerwear, it’s got every mark of quality you’d expect, including the finest materials on the market, the most durable construction and just a touch of timeless appeal and classic quality. Again, this makes the Taylor Stitch Bomber Jacket in Whiskey Suede one of the coolest leather jackets you can buy right now, even if it might not seem a wise choice at first glance. But you’re in luck if you start pre-funding it right now (it’s on the market for about three more weeks): The Taylor Stitch Bomber Jacket in Whiskey Suede won’t actually hit your doorstep until late October, right around the time you’re going to want to layer up with one of the best men’s bomber jackets. It’s hard to pass up that offer, right? No doubt about it.

SHOP: The Taylor Stitch Bomber Jacket in Whiskey Suede

Beyond the fact that it takes a classic style and upgrades it in a big way, the Taylor Stitch Bomber Jacket in Whiskey Suede is exceptional in plenty of other ways. Super-soft 3oz. calf suede should prove refined yet durable, and the texture and color is absolutely perfect for fall. Cotton twill lining through the body gives this stylish leather jacket a bit of added warmth and structure without weighing you down. That blend means it’s an excellent jacket to layer atop everything from a Taylor Stitch Oxford shirt to a Taylor Stitch henley on blustery fall days (and those days are coming back, trust me!).

To make things even better and more stylish, the Taylor Stitch Bomber Jacket in Whiskey Suede features contrasting ribbing at the collar and cuffs, plus a handy interior chest pocket (Taylor Stitch says this pocket is ideal for storing your cell phone, and it’s hard not to argue with that utility). The real icing on the cake is the fact that you can get this stellar, refined and versatile jacket on sale for 20 percent off right now. It’s a perfect jacket for fall weekend getaways or as a blazer substitute at the office, but really, with a jacket this well-made and classic-yet-modern, you can wear it just about anywhere.

Style Pick of the Week: Buck Mason Maverick Slim Jeans-The Best Men’s Jeans for Summer

Zoomed product image

We’ve talked a lot on here about the best brands for men’s denim, including favorites like Mott and Bow, and it’s always worth mentioning another brand that makes some of the best men’s jeans: That’d be Buck Mason, of course. If you keep up with the blog and if you’ve been shopping around for a pair of lightweight, durable, dependable and summer-ready jeans, then you’re in luck today. The Buck Mason Maverick Slim Jeans are everything you could hope for in a pair of summer denim, and then some. As a guy who wears denim more often than not, even in the summer heat, I’m always looking for men’s stretch jeans that offer up comfort and cushioning without overdoing it. That’s where Buck Mason’s Maverick Jeans enter the equation.

Satchel and Page

Built with 1 percent stretch for just enough mobility, it’s the Natural Wash Maverick Jeans that have caught my eye this season in particular. Fear not, though: This isn’t a pair of blindingly bright white jeans. These jeans have a natural wash finish, unlike cotton denim that’s been dyed with rich indigo. So, they’re more of an “off-white” or beige than anything, and that’s great news indeed if you’ve been meaning to switch up your denim rotation ever so slightly. Plus, they’re made with Buck Mason‘s guarantee of quality and durability, and that’s just the start of what makes these some of the best men’s jeans for summer.

SHOP: The Buck Mason Maverick Slim Jeans

Zoomed product image

Believe it or not, the Buck Mason Maverick Slim Jeans are reasonably priced for the quality and versatility you’re getting (they’ll run you $145 at Buck Mason), and the specs are certainly on-point as far as the best men’s denim for summer is concerned. Again, the 13oz. denim weight isn’t overly heavy nor overly flimsy, and touches like nickel hardware and a button fly amp up both the hard-wearing construction and classic appeal of the Buck Mason Maverick Slim Jeans. The fit also strikes a happy medium between modern and timeless. It’s a slim-straight fit, neither too skinny nor too relaxed, with a mid-rise finish and a tapered cut from the knee down.

Satchel and Page

All of these touches come together seamlessly to make what’s perhaps your new favorite pair of denim to wear with, well, anything. The Natural Wash finish means these slim men’s jeans pair up seamlessly with one of the best T-shirts from Buck Mason, not to mention a Buck Mason polo or a rugged Buck Mason denim shirt. And last but not least, you can certainly rock the Buck Mason Maverick Slim Jeans with a classic summer blazer from Buck Mason when the occasion calls for something a bit more polished. When you want jeans that work 24/7, all summer long, in plenty of style situations, you want a pair of the best men’s jeans for summer from Buck Mason.

Just this past Monday, I talked about where you should be shopping, and what you should be buying, right now. The answer is obvious, but it’s also worthy of closer inspection. It’s San Francisco-based Taylor Stitch, long one of my favorite menswear brands. I wrote all about the five best menswear picks to buy at Taylor Stitch, and you’d surely do well to check them out in a hurry. That’s all I’ve got for you today. One last fun reminder: If it’s weekend listening you seek, there’s my newsletter The Style Guide In Brief, but I’d also urge you to consider following me on Spotify. Here’s a playlist for all those WFH days and weekend hangs ahead. Cheers and thanks for reading!

The Thursday Buy: You Need the Flint and Tinder 365 Pants in Your Daily Wardrobe

Folks, when the going gets tough, when it feels to hot to wear pants, when you feel like your summer wardrobe is on the fritz, well, that’s when you need a pair of the Flint and Tinder 365 Pants. I’d be willing to bet that if you read this site on the regular, you don’t need me to sing the praises of Flint and Tinder, the excellent in-house brand dreamed up by the fine folks at San Francisco-based Huckberry. They’ve long been one of my favorite retailers, and indeed, one of the best places to buy menswear online, and that only becomes more clear by the day. So, that’s a great place to start if you’re thinking about buying the Flint and Tinder 365 Pants — and yes, I mean right now, as hot as it might be. That’s because the Flint and Tinder 365 Pants aren’t your average pair of chinos. They’re certainly part of any well-regarded list of the best shopping picks at Huckberry, but it goes beyond that.

We’ve certainly talked in the past about what makes these some of my favorite pants, but consider this a refresher – and again, even in the summer heat. The remarkable Flint and Tinder 365 Pants are a Huckberry best-seller for good reason, starting with the fact that they’re built as tough as jeans, with the styling potential of chinos. It’s the five-pocket design and yet polished build that stands apart from the pack. That versatility makes them easily wearable in situations where it’s too casual for jeans, but you still want to feel comfortable (and look great). Heck, go ahead and buy two pairs for $175 then thank me later.

SHOP: The Flint and Tinder 365 Pants

Particularly in the summer months, I’m a huge fan of the Salt colorway, which sits nicely at the intersection of off-white and bright white (which might be a bit too fashion-forward based on the situation. Beyond that nice and summer-ready option, they come in a dozen colors, each as wearable as the next with other Flint and Tinder essentials. You’ve also got your pick between Slim, Straight and Tapered fits. I’ve tried out both the Slim and Straight fits, and even the Straight fit is nicely cut, and not overly baggy.

The 8oz. cotton blend fabric, with just a hint of stretch, is also breezy enough for summer, but dependable enough for fall and winter. That makes them a true pair of four-season men’s pants, a rarity for under $100. Remember though, you can buy two pairs for $175 and save a bit of extra cash. Plus, the versatile design pairs well with everything from a Flint and Tinder T-shirt (right now) to a chambray shirt layered over your favorite henley (in the fall and winter).
