Style Pick of the Week: Billy Reid Dover Sweatshirt – The Best Fall Weekend Sweatshirt

What do you think of when you think of a crewneck sweatshirt? Perhaps a trusty athletic logo sweatshirt or even something more premium, right? Put all those thoughts to rest for just one second and consider that you haven’t yet seen one of the best sweatshirts for men, period: That’d be the Billy Reid Dover Sweatshirt, an exceptional take on the traditional crewneck sweater that blends both old-school athletic heritage and modern refinement in a surprisingly dressy and versatile final product. It’s part of Billy Reid’s Fall 2021 Collection, and it’s worth every penny. The Alabama-based designer has produced award-winning staples like one of the best casual shirts for fall for years now, and he’s also got quite the rotation of outerwear, like the famed Billy Reid Bond Peacoat, up for grabs. But before you can throw on a new jacket, start with the Billy Reid Dover Sweatshirt for comfortable layering, casually cool style and much more.

Billy Reid’s Dover Sweatshirt belongs in your closet

The perfect blend of old-school cool and modern style

Billy Reid made a name for himself merging the old and the new, winning menswear accolades aplenty in the process, and the Billy Reid Dover Sweatshirt, is a prime example of how it all comes together. It’s got the silhouette of a grey crewneck sweatshirt, but it’s cleaned up and accented with leather elbow patches and armhole piping. Your standard athletic sweatshirt, this is certainly not. And especially in a cool Heather Grey color, it’s about as versatile as you want it to be.

The Billy Reid Dover Sweatshirt also features slight details that really showcase the Billy Reid difference, like the small patch accenting Billy Reid’s signature stripe design. It’s touches like those ones that make the Billy Reid Dover Sweatshirt a fitting piece to wear with tailored blue jeans or tan chinos to the office when you can mix and match pieces. You can also layer the Billy Reid Dover Sweatshirt beneath your favorite fall blazer or beneath a rugged field jacket, but to me, this classic crewneck sweatshirt is at its best when you showcase those handsome leather elbow patches and rock it solo for a weekend coffee outing. Note that it also comes in a sleek Black colorway with contrasting elbow patches, but Heather Grey is your best bet, in my humble opinion.

And because it’s made with a cotton-polyester blend, it’s not too heavy or bulky — it’s the ideal go-between sweater to wear as we move into October. You can throw it on over a classic Billy Reid Oxford shirt or a long-sleeve tee from Billy Reid, too: The choice is all yours. Now, be warned, because the Billy Reid Dover Sweatshirt will run you $195, quite the price tag. But that being said, it’s exceedingly rare to find a crewneck sweatshirt made with this much care and attention to detail. For my money’s worth, I’d say you need to make this one your new favorite fall sweater ASAP.

Think of it like the perfect sweater to wear with jeans, especially back to a more casual office or out on an early fall weekend stroll. The fact that it layers up nicely over a Mott and Bow T-shirt or with a stylish, on-sale Mott and Bow buttondown shirt is also an added bonus, but it only gets better from there. Coming from a company that started out by only focusing on the best jeans for men, that’s not bad utility and style to have in your closet – not bad at all. And another bonus? First-time customers can get 10 percent off at Mott and Bow with the code beau10. Let’s keep on scrolling through the list of why that’s an outstanding idea, shall we?

SHOP: The Mott and Bow Light Merino Wool Crew

Fittingly, it’s the fabric that makes the Mott and Bow Light Merino Wool Crew such a solid seasonal buy (and certainly, one of the best sweaters for early fall). Merino wool is nice and lightweight to begin with, filled with moisture-wicking, breathable and anti-microbial properties. The weave here is definitely thicker than your standard merino wool T-shirt, but layering the Mott and Bow Light Merino Wool Crew should prove a snap. You can even throw a rugged waxed trucker jacket over top of it, without risking getting too hot (even on a breezy, cloudy fall day). Your new favorite sweater is also as wearable as it gets, either at the office atop an Oxford shirt or worn over a soft cotton T-shirt for a weekend coffee outing.

The most versatile sweater you can buy for spring? You be the judge of that.

Simply put, the Todd Snyder Cashmere Crewneck Sweater in Camel has plenty going for it that makes it worth investment. There’s the cool Camel color, the kind you can wear with dark indigo jeans, light wash denim, your favorite pair of chinos or even canvas shorts in for a high-low style blend… you name it, and it’s the ideal shade to step into early spring and beyond. Of course, Todd Snyder cashmere sweaters have plenty going for them as far as quality is concerned, too. In this case, we’re talking a midweight cashmere fabric blend that’s as breathable as it is warm, making this the ideal sweater to layer up over a classic Oxford shirt or even a long-sleeve cotton T-shirt. The crewneck silhouette also is at once casual and yet crisp, providing the right base for a business casual look with a poplin dress shirt and a knit tie.

It’s also knit with ribbed cuffs at the wrists and the waist for a better fit (this sweater won’t stretch out or lose its shape). But to me, it’s the Taylor Stitch Crawford Sweater that really takes the cake, what with the use of organic cotton and seed stitch construction to give it some texture and visual interest. It gets plenty better from there, though.

When the going gets tough, when the weather takes a turn for the worse and when your weekend calls for effortlessly cool, rugged style and top-notch layering potential, that’s where the Taylor Stitch Crawford Sweater comes into play. The timeless shawl construction and rugged good looks are as ideal as it gets for winter layering.

It’s always worth watching when Taylor Stitch puts its collective design prowess towards a new silhouette, and in this case, it’s a rugged shawl cardigan. This classic men’s cardigan, in fact, gives off some very similar style vibes to, say, Daniel Craig’s cardigan in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” –– that’s style to be emulated right there, is it not? The great thing about the Taylor Stitch Crawford Sweater is that it comes at a price tag that’s more agreeable than you might expect ($168 at Taylor Stitch), and touches like dark horn buttons add durability and a touch of style. Better still is the fact that this sweater can pull double or triple-duty, if you will.

Wear it atop a classic Oxford shirt with tan Taylor Stitch chinos for versatile business casual or “Zoom call” style, or else pair it up with a rugged men’s henley and selvedge denim for laidback weekend outings. If you want to go more casual still, how about you throw the Taylor Stitch Crawford Sweater on over a favorite garment-dyed T-shirt with some joggers for your morning coffee run? Any way you choose to wear it, the Taylor Stitch Crawford Sweater is an unstoppable winter layering staple, and it’s by far destined to become your new favorite winter sweater.

See Now, Buy Now: This Everlane Cardigan is the Perfect Sweater for Fall and Winter

Everlane Felted Merino Cardigan

Everlane always delivers the goods when it comes to transparent, stylish menswear (and women’s wear!).

My friends, I’ll come right out and say it now: The Everlane Felted Merino Cardigan is the best men’s sweater for under $100 (or at least one of them), and now that we’ve officially hit November in earnest, I’d say that means it belongs in your wardrobe ASAP. It’s a subtly stylish and classic cardigan on the surface, one that packs in plenty of functionality and form for an agreeable price tag. As you know from reading the blog over the years (going back to 2015!), Everlane does things the right way, updating consumers on where its products are made and how they’re made, often focusing on sustainable materials like merino. Merino is a fabric that’s made from merino sheep wool, resulting in a warm and soft hand feel, and that makes it great when done up in a sweater, especially something as cool and classic as the Everlane Felted Merino Cardigan.

See Now, Buy Now: Mott and Bow Now Makes Your New Favorite Sweatshirt

A well-made, casual and seriously cool sweatshirt from Mott and Bow.

If  you visit the digital pages of this blog often enough, you’ll find that we’re big fans of NYC-based denim purveyors Mott and Bow. They’re the focus once again of today’s See Now, Buy Now series, and they specialize in making a range of affordable men’s denim in quality fits, fabrics and washes, all with an emphasis on direct-to-consumer efficiency. And if you really, really dive deep into the blog, you’ll know that the brand does more than just make your favorite pair of jeans. In fact, as of this year, Mott and Bow is now making your new favorite sweatshirt (as the headline implies). The Mott and Bow Hooper French Terry Crewneck is, most importantly, versatile yet casual, not to mention extremely stylish and well-made — how’s that for a triple whammy? Not bad, right? Like all Mott and Bow gear, the difference is evident right from the start, and in this case, that means the right fabric sets this stylish sweatshirt apart from the pack.

SHOP: The Mott and Bow Hooper French Terry Crewneck

One of the versatile colors in which you can get this crucial sweatshirt.

It’s pretty great that a brand that makes some of the coolest men’s jeans continues to branch out into complementary, stylish pieces that work very well with the slim denim on tap from them — I’m a fan after testing in recent weeks and months. Available in colors like Charcoal Heather, Heather Gray and the Navy option seen above, this rugged-yet-classic crewneck sweatshirt should  pair well with everything from slim dark blue denim (from Mott and Bow, of course) and a classic Oxford shirt to tan chinos & white high-top sneakers for a bit of early, early spring transitional style. It helps that the crewneck sweatshirt has transcended its humble athletic roots to become a go-to everyday style move — I’d also suggest you layer it underneath a denim jacket with olive chinos and your favorite pair of chukka boots for easygoing weekend (or casual office!) style. The point is this: The Mott and Bow Hooper French Terry Crewneck is more than just your average crewneck, and you should expect nothing less from a brand that continues to innovate on all fronts.

Style Pick of the Week: Taylor Stitch Fisherman Sweater

The best winter sweater you didn’t know you needed, courtesy of Taylor Stitch.

Alright, folks. We’re back at it during today’s Style Pick of the Week with yet another essential men’s sweater from, yes, Taylor Stitch. That makes it the second time this month we’ve featured one of your favorite menswear brands in this series, but with good reason (exceptionally good reason, at that). You see, we’re talking today about one of the best men’s sweaters for winter, the truly excellent, perfectly rugged Taylor Stitch Fisherman Sweater. It’s the best sweater for a winter weekend, it can be worn to the office in a pinch, and it’s got that unique Taylor Stitch guarantee of quality and timeless style. Yes, it’s got plenty going for it. Let’s take a deeper dive into the Taylor Stitch Fisherman Sweater, shall we? For starters, this rugged winter sweater takes inspiration from the thick, hard-wearing knits typically worn on the water — it’s a tough fisherman sweater that’s going to be worth the investment ($228 via the Taylor Stitch Web site), but it’s not going to break the bank. And for that investment, you’re getting all the quality the TS brand can muster — which happens to be quite a lot.

SHOP: The Taylor Stitch Fisherman Sweater

The difference is in the details, and Taylor Stitch surely gets it right.

The tough Taylor Stitch Fisherman Sweater features  a wool-nylon-polyester blend for warmth and yet ease of movement and comfort. This isn’t your typical scratchy wool sweater, and that’s a very good thing, indeed. This Taylor Stitch sweater  features the customary chunky waffle knit that makes it perfect when you’re searching for what to wear on a cold winter morning — roll out of bed, throw on the Taylor Stitch Fisherman Sweater atop your favorite henley, and then get that coffee brewing. As the brand so wisely calls out, melange yarns make this classic men’s sweater stand out from the pack even more — this is an heirloom-quality sweater made with plenty of care and attention to detail. Taylor Stitch knows that these pieces work well on their own or layered up, so try this Taylor Stitch sweater with everything from a classic chambray shirt and faded blue jeans to slim tan chinos, leather boots and a white Oxford shirt. Heck, wear the Taylor Stitch Fisherman Sweater all on its own beneath a waxed trucker jacket and alongside your favorite work pants — it’s as suited a layer for winter yard work as it is for sipping on a Saturday night Old Fashioned. Helpfully, the Taylor Stitch Fisherman Sweater is available in a rich Natural Waffle fabric (my personal favorite), or a seriously winter-ready  Maroon Waffle. The choice is yours, but either way, you’re getting one of the best men’s sweaters on the market. Layer accordingly.

See Now, Buy Now: The Peregrine Waffle Crew Neck Jumper is an Essential Winter Sweater

A warm, thick-knit sweater from a brand that’s been making standout menswear for a long, long time.

In need of a new winter sweater? Preferably ASAP? Peregrine is here to save the day with the Waffle Crew Neck Jumper, to say the very least. Make no mistake, this is a rugged winter sweater that channels all the classic heritage and true throwback style that every guy needs — you know, the type of stylish winter sweater that an icon like Steve McQueen might envy. It makes sense: Peregrine was founded in 1796 — yes, that’s right — and the same commitment to heritage and history carries through to the present day. Hopefully, you’re familiar with the brand: We’ve previously covered Peregrine sweaters in similar posts on this site that cover the best winter style essentials — the construction and quality that Peregrine brings to the table has serious staying power, to say the least. The Waffle Crew Neck Jumper is no different, made with 100 percent British wool for exceptional warmth.

That wool really makes all the difference — it’s some of the best in the world. The Waffle Crew Neck Jumper also has a classic knit, the kind of sweater that wouldn’t look out of place in the Scottish Highlands 50 years ago — nor in the city, layered with a classic peacoat, in the present day.

The Waffle Crew Neck Jumper from Peregrine is also available in this rich shade of Cinnamon (a personal favorite).

And if you’ve found yourself in need of a wardrobe refresh this winter, the Peregrine Waffle Crew Neck Jumper is here to help — it’s a unique change of pace from a shawl collar cardigan, and it just so happens to be dressier than a sport-inspired crewneck. That being said, all the classic hallmarks of a stylish winter sweater are still there, meaning you can layer it over a classic white tee with faded denim, or pair it up with a white Oxford shirt, grey chinos and leather chukka boots. In summary: The Peregrine Waffle Crew Neck Jumper is going to become a go-to winter sweater … for however long winter lasts.

See Now, Buy Now: The Finisterre Westray Crew is Your New Favorite Sweater for Cold Weather

A classically rugged sweater made with modern fabric — can’t ask for much more than that.

The crew here at The Style Guide — by that, I mean me — is all about keeping you informed in any and all matters #menswear-related. So, when the time comes to step out in cozy, rugged fall style, I’d wager you’re going to want to throw on the Finisterre Westray Crew. Rest assured, we’re getting there … slowly but surely. And it certainly pays to be prepared when you need to layer up on a chilly fall day — the Westray Crew is going to get the job done admirably when the time comes. For one, Finisterre as a brand is rooted in function, designing the sort of easy-to-wear rugged fall gear that blends elements of classic style and modern functionality. Take, for instance, today’s See Now, Buy Now pick. The Finisterre Westray Crew calls to mind the sort of warm, tough layers you’d find out on the high seas — the cable knitting and use of Donegal tweed wool ensure that connection. And the Finisterre Westray Crew doesn’t skimp on functionality, either. The brand’s knitting technique and use of a textured tweed yarn with lanolin results in water-repellent qualities — that makes the classically rugged Westray Crew just a bit more durable than your average sweater, to say the least.

And that durability provides wearing occasions aplenty. The Finisterre Westray Crew is made for layering with a rugged denim trucker jacket, plus olive chinos and classic suede lace-up boots.

In fact, that combo would work well for a weekend coffee run or a day at the office in equal measure — just add a chambray shirt in either instance.  If you feel inclined to wear the Finisterre Westray Crew on its own, it can still provide comfort and warmth while standing out handsomely atop a merino long-sleeve crew shirt, slim black denim and rugged leather boots. Complete with textured stitching and a chunky ribbed hem, the handsome Westray Crew has got all the timeless details a stylish fall and winter sweater needs — that’s worthy of an investment right now, don’t you think? Let me know in the comments if the Finisterre Westray Crew will be making its way into your closet in time for cold weather.

Thanks for reading!

Online Shopping Picks: The Best Men’s Cardigans for Cold Weather

Editor’s note: Click through for a full set of menswear shopping picks.

In recent weeks, things have really picked up in terms of fall style preparations in my neck of the woods — if you’re into menswear, that probably means it’s been much the same for you. A late September weekend in New York City really brought with it the first slight hints of fall, and slight seasonal changes should remind us of all of gear we need for the chillier months ahead. In the case of today’s latest Online Shopping Picks post, that means we’re talking about a valuable sweater style to keep on-hand — and wear plenty — during fall and winter. What’s that style, you ask? It’s the ever-versatile modern man’s sweater — the cardigan. Whether cut in soft cotton-cashmere or premium merino, or with a more substantial shawl collar, a stylish cardigan is a nice hybrid style that fits in seamlessly with more tailored or more casual looks. Want to go more dressed up? Throw on a slim cotton-cashmere cardigan in place of your blazer with a wool tie and crisp dress shirt. Want to stay casual? Take that same cardigan and pair it with a long-sleeve henley and a durable, essential pair of sturdy selvedge denim for your off-duty hours. The picks below come in at price points low and high, and feature style that’s minimal and tailored — as well as casual and rugged. If you haven’t bought a cardigan for fall and winter, consider this the perfect starting point.

#1. JackThreads Fair Isle Cardigan — $79

A neutral base livened up with a visually interesting Fair Isle pattern.

A neutral base livened up with a visually interesting Fair Isle pattern.

Quick, what brand makes all manner of essential goods for every season? At nice, low prices? It’s JackThreads — and this cardigan is a big-time winner in that regard. The brand keeps taking steps forward as far as its products go — pieces like this Fair Isle cardigan nod toward trends without being too over-the-top. The fabric quality and fit should be reliable and modern, and the tan base should help it play nicely off navy chinos or grey flannel trousers — yes, it’s almost flannel season!

#2. J. Crew Cotton-Cashmere Cardigan Sweater — $74.50

Nothing too fancy about this sweater -- but with fabric this nice, it doesn't need to overdo it.

Nothing too fancy about this sweater — but with fabric this nice, it doesn’t need to overdo it.

Like JackThreads, J. Crew consistently comes up with fresh takes on wardrobe staples no matter the season. Although some of those creations can lean quite expensive, this cotton-cashmere cardigan is the definition of an everyday sweater at a low price. If you keep a weather eye out for sales and deals, you could snag it even cheaper. As it stands now though, a slim burgundy cardigan from a reputable brand is something every guy can put to good use. Team up this cardigan with a blue Oxford, slim tan chinos and high-top sneakers for a bit of sporty, retro style.

#3. Grayers Shore Club Cotton Cardigan in Navy Heather — $93.75

A cotton cardigan can still work in the fall -- just pair with a slim henley and cold-weather accessories.

A cotton cardigan can still work in the fall — just pair with a slim henley and cold-weather accessories.

Have you had your fill yet of navy sweaters? Hope not. Grayers’ fabric quality is top-notch (which explains the Grayers x SeaVees sneaker collab), and that’s the case with this easygoing navy heather cardigan. With details like a chest pocket and dual hip pockets, plus that heathered fabric, it’s going to wear easily over a slub pocket T-shirt with olive chinos and a pair of durable moc toe boots — like the ones seen in this #OOTD. It’s the perfect cardigan for weekend coffee runs — and you’ll be the sharpest guy in the place.

#4. Todd Snyder Shawl Cardigan — $157.50 (Available via East Dane)

If you're not a Todd Snyder fan, get on board -- this cardigan is but one example of his excellent work.

If you’re not a Todd Snyder fan, get on board — this cardigan is but one example of his excellent work.

It’s tough not to be a huge fan of what Mr. Snyder has done for casual, rugged menswear — right? The designer’s collaborations — from the Timex x Todd Snyder partnership to his work on P.F. Flyers sneakers — merge menswear’s past with modern fits, a dash of Americana and all-around terrific style. So, it should come as no surprise that his knitwear knocks it out of the park. A midweight jersey fabric is complemented by a faded indigo wash — that combo means it’ll stand out stylishly even up against dark blue denim. And while you could style it with an essential chambray shirt and tan chinos, it’s going to be at its best with a vintage team T-shirt during your next football game.

#5. Rag & Bone Standard Issue Avery Shawl Cardigan — $275 (Available via East Dane)

A strong silhouette, neutral color and luxury fabric make this cardigan worth the investment.

A strong silhouette, neutral color and luxury fabric make this cardigan worth the investment.

Did you think we’d make it out of this post without at least one eye-popping splurge? Not a chance. Some of us aren’t necessarily into brands that skew more heavily toward minimal high fashion — Rag & Bone is one such brand, yet they always temper that approach with military styling, classic colors and beautiful fabrics. This navy knit shawl cardigan has a lot going on visually — the shawl collar, front hip patch pockets and textured fabric — but it’s done so in a pleasing way (with a strong silhouette to boot). When teamed with a red plaid shirt, you’re getting a look that’s heritage-inspired and fall-appropriate without going too far overboard.

With any of the above cardigans, you’re checking some key fall #menswear criteria — 1) Warmth and solid layering potential. 2) Visual interest — in the form of a shawl collar or a slim dress cardigan. 3) Plenty of styling versatility — crucial when you want to switch things up from a stylish fall or winter blazer. And while some of the above price points stray upward a bit, it’s worth it to make an investment now — especially when you can wear a nice cardigan all through winter (even the Grayers cotton cardigan can be layered under a winter topcoat when snow hits). If you suspect you might get funny looks or comparisons to everyone’s favorite neighbor, rest assured that the cardigan is a modern style move — take the plunge, y’all! If you have suggestions for other stylish men’s cardigans, check out The Style Guide on Facebook.
