My friends, let’s get to business: It being Thursday and all, today’s Thursday Buy will have you primed for that post-New Year getaway — or any winter getaway, for that matter. I’m talking, naturally, about one of the best weekender bags for men, a new (and very fast-selling) addition to the Huckberry line of in-house goods that assuredly takes the cake when you want standout style and durability. The Standard Issue Leather Duffel is the perfect mix of rugged and refined, sized just right to take all your winter style essentials on a quick getaway upstate, to the coast and beyond. The latest and greatest is part of the new Standard Issue Leather Goods collection at Huckberry, a “vintage-inspired” offering that the brand worked to create with great care from fine leathers from Mexico’s best tannery. And if you know anything about Huckberry, it’s that when the crew sets its mind to achieving something, they certainly deliver.

SHOP: The Standard Issue Leather Duffel

Standard Issue Leather Duffel

In the case of this rugged-yet-refined weekender bag, you’re getting 45 liters worth of carrying capacity (enough to take some versatile gear out on the road for a few days), plus the sort of great looks only Huckberry can provide. Heck, the leather itself is gold-rated, indicating high quality and sustainable production methods. And what’s more, it’s helpful that the Standard Issue Leather Duffel fits right in with the rest of the line itself, which includes everything from a messenger to handsome leather belts and dopp kits. Load up those accessories in your weekender bag, grab your favorite Oxford shirt and leather chukka boots, then bundle up and hit the road. Style Pick of the Week: Wills Speckled Merino Crewneck Sweater

Wills Speckled Merino Crewneck 2

A classic and cool sweater made from top-notch materials.

On the hunt for one of the best sweaters for men this holiday season (and beyond)? If you ask me, I think your search just got a little less comlicated, because the Wills Speckled Merino Crewneck Sweater is here to solve your winter layering problems in effective, refined and surprisingly affordable style. We’re talking about one of the best sweaters under $100 for men here (it clocks in at $98), and it’s super helpful that said sweater is sold by Huckberry. That gives it a mark of quality and a high bar to clear, but again, the Wills Speckled Merino Crewneck Sweater is one-of-a-kind in its own right, from the premium fabric to the no-fuss crewneck design. The crewneck design, in fact, means you can wear this refined sweater on its own atop a long-sleeve T-shirt for a more laidback look, and yet it might be at its best with a classic Oxford shirt or a warm flannel shirt for added warmth and holiday-ready style. Yes indeed, a piece like the Wills Speckled Merino Crewneck Sweater is subtly stylish and yet seriously cool in its own way, and that makes it a highly covetable winter wardrobe addition.

SHOP: The Wills Speckled Merino Crewneck Sweater

One of three versatile colorways in which you can snag your new favorite sweater.

As mentioned above, it helps that this versatile sweater comes in three highly adaptable colors, each of which could be the building block of a successful holiday ensemble. Team the Charcoal color with everything from tan chinos and an Oxford shirt to dark blue denim, brown leather chukka boots and a light blue chambray shirt underneath. Either of those looks should work swimmingly this holiday season. It’s also quite helpful that the Wills Speckled Merino Crewneck Sweater is made with, well, merino fabric for the ultimate in versatility. Merino regulates your temperature and acts as an anti-microbial fabric, all the better to ensure you get multiple rounds of wear out of this standout sweater. Again, you can’t top the sub-$100 price tag, either. And if I were you, I just might look to snag multiple colorways of what just might be your new favorite sweater. Who’s onboard with that? If you end up picking up this piece, let me know on Twitter.

The Friday Read: Todd Snyder x L.L. Bean, A Brooklyn Whiskey & Huckberry’s Best-Selling Pants

Flint and Tinder 365 Pants

Possibly your new favorite pair of pants, endlessly wearable any day of the week via Huckberry.

Well, my friends. Believe it or not, we made it, somehow, through another topsy-turvy week in these turbulent, turbulent times. Let’s try to have some fun, keep it brief, keep it light and roll on into the weekend, shall we? And what better way to do that than by refreshing your wardrobe and getting a pair of Huckberry’s best-selling pants as shown above, the Flint and Tinder 365 Pants? They’re wearable in each and every season, but especially these days, when your pursuits might entail everything from a Zoom call to a quick happy hour session on a backyard patio, followed by (masked) weekend strolls aplenty. I’m a big fan of ’em, to be sure, and if you haven’t yet experienced the wonder that is the Flint and Tinder 365 Pants, I’d recommend you snap up a pair or two (or three) as soon as possible. They’re available in both Slim and Straight fits, and in a range of colors, all the better to be worn on the daily.

With all that being said, we’ve got lots of ground to cover as we get closer to Thanksgiving, plus Black Friday and Cyber Monday. I’ll be covering Cyber Monday deals for The Manual, so rest assured that you’ll be the first to know what I’m hearing (especially if you follow me on Twitter). So, that’s where we are this fine fall weekend. The rest of your Friday Read is, as ever, all below.

L.L. Bean x Todd Snyder Promo Split

  • It’s been a big month around these parts for several reasons, of course, but on the men’s style front specifically, I had a heck of a great time covering the excellent-as-ever Todd Snyder x L.L. Bean collaboration for Maxim, featuring a deep dive into some of the coolest updates to heritage styles that I’ve seen in some time (including the above gear pick, of course). Give it a read and get ready for the rest of the best season in menswear.
  • I’ve also been busy elsewhere on the writing front, and it gives me great pleasure to introduce you to your new favorite whiskey, a stellar offering from Kings County Distillery in Brooklyn that I covered for GearMoose. Think old-school appeal, a very cool packaging design and great whiskey contained therein, to boot. Of course, you can get whiskey delivered to you via Drizly in just an hour, if you so please.
  • I’ve got one last endorsement for you today, and it’s a simple one. If you like your menswear with a side of equally stylish and on-trend music, plus coffee and whiskey, well, you’re in luck. This is where my twice-weekly newsletter, The Style Guide In Brief, comes into play, and you should certainly subscribe before tomorrow’s dispatch if you haven’t already. Cheers, my friends!

Folks, we’re going to wrap this one up early today in hopes of getting out the door in time for the weekend and perhaps, a stroll through Prospect Park and a stop by famed Brooklyn bar The Adirondack. Before I let you go, take a look at my guide on how to dress for a fall road trip, if that’s more your speed this weekend. As always, thanks for reading and stay safe out there!

#OOTD: How to Wear a Field Jacket for Fall, The Best Way

Let’s get real, folks: The weather out there calls for one of the best field jackets to meet worsening conditions while keeping you put together, warm and, just as equally important, stylish. We’ve got just the right jacket for you today. Yes indeed, it’s high time we got down to the business of more rugged fall style with today’s #OOTD. There are plenty of different iterations of the field jacket (in fact, I covered quite a few at Effortless Gent), but today’s jacket (the Flint and Tinder Flannel-Lined Waxed Hudson Jacket) is more of an updated take on the sporting jacket, as you’ll see below.

What does that mean for you? That means you can wear it on all your masked fall and winter pursuits with ease, be it weekend getaways, camping trips or quick-and-easy craft beer runs (that’s my modus operandi right there, as you know if you read my newsletter or follow me on Instagram). This outfit’s supporting cast is both rugged and refined, all the more versatile for whatever fall throws your way, including one of the best denim shirts and of course, a pair of classic Red Wing boots. For wherever your fall takes you, the best field jacket can certainly get the job done.

The right way to wear a seriously cool field jacket this fall.

  • The Field Jacket: Flint and Tinder Flannel-Lined Waxed Hudson Jacket, $258 — A unique take on the sporting jacket that’s proven a fast seller, this rugged waxed jacket is like a budget alternative to Bond’s jacket in Skyfall.
  • The Shirt: Buck Mason Denim Vintage One-Pocket Shirt, $105 — A favorite staple of this blog, you can’t go wrong with a rugged denim shirt for fall from Buck Mason.
  • The Henley: Alex Mill Henley in Sueded Jersey, $65 — Add even more rugged appeal to this #OOTD with a classic henley made for fall weekend wear particularly.
  • The Denim: Todd Snyder Slim Fit Japanese Selvedge Denim in Washed Black, $228 — With Todd Snyder selvedge denim, you’re investing in the best of the best, no questions asked, and this handsome pair of black selvedge denim takes the cake.
  • The Boots: Red Wing Heritage Iron Ranger Boots, $329 — As classic a fall style staple as it gets, these Red Wing boots could just be the most rugged men’s boots on the market. Don’t worry about mixing black and tan here — it just works.
  • The Socks: Bombas Men’s Work Boot Calf Socks, $22 — Your rugged boots call for some rugged men’s boot socks to provide optimum comfort and style — Bombas men’s socks check all the right boxes.
  • The Watch: Lum-Tec M88 Watch, $575 — To pair up with this ensemble’s other tough style staples, you need a rugged leather watch, a la the Lum-Tec M88 Watch.
  • The Everyday Carry: Filson Dryden Briefcase, $195 — Whatever it is your hauling this fall (for me, it’s often a craft beer growler, a journal and a book, to name a few), the Filson Dryden Briefcase can more than pass muster.

Alright, if you ask me, you can really feel it in the air, and you can nearly see the fall season jump right off the page with this #OOTD. It’s got all the functional and tough gear your fall and winter season requires, starting with a rugged waxed jacket that, as I mentioned, is like a budget alternative to Bond’s jacket in Skyfall. That’s a mighty good spot to be in, especially when you layer it atop a rugged denim shirt for fall from Buck Mason. To keep you warm and moving around in style as you head from distillery to brewery or day hike back into town, a classic henley provides some added warmth, while a pair of black selvedge denim add some edgy, cool appeal to this ensemble. It’s all set off nicely by about as premium a pair of men’s boots as you’re apt to find: The Red Wing Heritage Iron Ranger Boots, a true fall style staple.

As it were, the Lum-Tec M88 Watch is a rugged and tough watch that fits right in with the rest of this look, while a pair of Bombas men’s socks is enough to provide plenty of comfort and style for days on the road and at home. Of course, to haul all your gear, you also need the best of the best — enter the Filson Dryden Briefcase, the type of everyday bag you should be proud to own. And, well, that’s that — there’s your #OOTD. Head to Twitter to let me know how you end up rocking it. Cheers, my friends!

#OOTD: How to Wear a Waxed Trucker Jacket This Fall

You wake up one morning, and you know: Fall is well and truly here. You open your window, that crisp, cold air hits … and immediately, your mind jumps to your lovingly stored jackets and sweaters. It’s time, once again, to really start dressin’How exactly are you going to do that? It’s simple, really. Start with one of the best waxed trucker jackets as sold by Huckberry, then go from there. The fall season already looks mighty different (no college football, for one), but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t dress to experience the pleasures of fall — a to-go brewery trip or a socially distanced orchard visit might be the norm these days, but today’s #OOTD has all the stops covered. To wit: We’re talking even more of the best picks for fall, so as to ensure you’ve got day-to-night style on lock. That means a stylish merino henley and a Levi’s western shirt, for starters. From there, we’re lacing up tough leather boots and throwing on a Shinola leather watch. The overall effect is rugged and functional without going overboard — and it’s going to look great on many a chilly fall day, guaranteed. Check out the full look below, and as ever, head to Instagram to see how I’m dressing this fall. Cheers!

A tough waxed trucker jacket, worn the right way for fall.

Can you feel it in the air? Fall’s best adventures are ahead of us yet, I just know it. When you make a Flint and Tinder waxed jacket the centerpiece of your outfit, only good things are in store — in my humble opinion. This look gets a rugged shot in the arm via both a rugged Western shirt and of course, perhaps the perfect base layer for fall — they’re going to work in harmony to keep you warm and comfortable on the go, no matter what (and when you need to take your trucker jacket off, you can rest assured knowing you still look put together). For mobile, adventure-ready style that works from the trail to the brewery, the Topo Designs Dirt Pants are the right way to go (note the drawstring waistband for comfort). Those straight-fit cotton pants should sit mighty nicely atop some of the best leather boots for fall, a pair coming at you courtesy of FRYE. There’s also never a bad time to throw on the Shinola Runwell Watch, one that works with rugged gear picks like these — as well as dressier fall style situations (when those do occur, that is to say).

If you’re rolling solo and enjoy having a podcast or your favorite indie rock in your headphones, then Master & Dynamic headphones are the only way to go here (wireless functionality makes ’em well-suited for plenty of fall excursions). And of course, to haul your everyday carry essentials, a Filson twill bag is the right move. What’s your take on this look? And where will it take you this fall? Be sure to let me know on Twitter. Again, thanks for reading!
