See Now, Buy Now: Get Ready for the Weekend with This Todd Snyder Utility Shirt

A rock-solid shirt from an award-winning menswear designer.

Now, Memorial Day weekend is nearly here, so let’s dive right in with what could become one of your new favorite summer shirts, shall we? This is our second See Now, Buy Now feature in two days, and I assure you: It’s a good one. Todd Snyder, the lauded NYC menswear designer and a longtime friend of the blog, is once again here to upgrade your seasonal wardobe with one of summer’s best shirts, so you’d do well to hop on this style before the season kicks off in earnest. Even if that shirt isn’t up your alley, you should certainly consider shopping the Todd Snyder sale that’s running this weekend for Memorial Day (up to 30 percent off!). Back to business, though.
OLIVERS

If your neck of the woods is anything like mine, you know that times are quite different out there — to say the least. But for relaxing summer days at home or on a socially distanced coffee run or on the lake (again, stay socially distanced), you need a Todd Snyder shirt to get you from point A to point B. The very definition of casual luxury, the Todd Snyder Utility Shirt manages to be both rugged and refined — would you expect anything else from a menswear designer who just knows what guys want (and need)? Certainly not. This rugged utility shirt is going to be an easy go-to to throw on with everything from slim light wash denim to chino shorts — starting this weekend. What makes it so essential? I’m glad you asked.

SHOP: The Todd Snyder Utility Shirt

Also available in a cool, essential Slate colorway.

When it comes to Memorial Day weekend style essentials, you’ve got plenty to worry about (even if your plans are different this year) — you should have the best cuts of meat to grill, some cold beer, and again … a stylish summer shirt. Crucially, this classic short-sleeve shirt checks all the right boxes, starting with the use of 100 percent Italian cotton (Albiate), to be specific), not to mention the sort of functionality you get from two front-patch pockets. Consider the Todd Snyder Utility Shirt a breezy top layer to throw on over a classic white tee or pair on its own — in any of the three colorways. Then, add slim navy chino shorts and your favorite canvas sneakers, or else step into laidback olive chinos and add casual suede chukka boots. Either look works for hours hanging out at home, playing tunes on that stylish Bluetooth speaker and hanging with the family. Whatever you end up doing this weekend (or on future summer weekends), I’d say it’ll be made better by the Todd Snyder Utility Shirt. Cheers, my friends.

The Friday Read: Taylor Stitch Denim, Memorial Day Weekend and Pure Michigan

Folks, who else is amped for the official (or is it technically unofficial?) start of summer? And by a show of hands, who here is taking some styling inspiration from this week’s post on what to wear for Memorial Day weekend? I hope you found those tips and tricks handy — and I hope you checked out this week’s edition of The List, featuring a whole bunch of summer style essentials to shop for Memorial Day weekend. If all of that shopping hasn’t kept you busy enough, know that we’ve got a few choice #menswear reads below to help you kick off your weekend. I personally can’t wait for some much-needed time off. I capped off a PR event at my day job on Tuesday night, and I’m positively PUMPED to head back to my home state to see my  wonderful girlfriend, Laura! If you haven’t yet checked out Laura’s blog, I’d suggest you give it a read — her Playlist Friday posts are a particular favorite of mine! She also does a standout job covering women’s fashion on a budget — we all know I approve of style on a budget! As it were, I was in the Mitten last weekend for a trip with Laura’s family to Mackinaw City, and this coming weekend promises plenty of fun. On the agenda: A helping of Michigan craft beer, some easygoing backyard grilling and some exploration of Detroit — always a highlight! To keep up with all the fun, check out my Instagram, if you feel so inclined. For now, let’s get your weekend going with the below fun links. Cheers!

  • We’ll kick things off with a post that’s really of the essence here — Taylor Stitch is offering up a rare pair of slim light wash denim for your shopping pleasure. Namely, the brand’s Slim Jeans in 24-Month Wash come from Cone Mills — the legendary denim mill shut down last year, and the material the brand used in these jeans is one-of-a-kind. I’d get on it ASAP!
  • In the spirit of summer style, I rounded up the best summer T-shirts for men over at The Manual. Seriously, don’t doubt the style potential of a classic T-shirt — these picks are fit for layering under a rugged denim jacket or a slim blazer, or wearing all on their own. Trust me.
  • I mentioned this earlier, but if you glazed over that part of the post (shame on you!), then you’d do well to shop the latest edition of The List, covering essential summer gear galore — you’ve got no excuse now.

We’re going to close up shop just a bit early today, all in the spirit of enjoying some time off this weekend. Check back for tomorrow’s Style Pick of the Week, and we’ll catch ya later!

#OOTD: Here’s What You Need to Wear This Memorial Day Weekend

If the impending long weekend — Memorial Day weekend, to be precise! — snuck up on you, fear not! We here at The Style Guide are coming in hot with a new #OOTD geared to help you take on the weekend (and the rest of the summer) in versatile style that works for just about any circumstance. Traveling up the coast to see friends and family? Hopping on a plane to squeeze in a quick vacation? Lounging around by your pool or patio (or an apartment rooftop)? Picks like a classic navy polo and slim grey chinos are going to work wonders no matter the situation — as are some classic-yet-casual leather Oxfords and a go-anywhere watch with a significant nautical bent. In fact, this #OOTD really embodies what Memorial Day is all about — kicking back with family and friends, recognizing all that we have to be thankful for … and looking classic while doing it. The same stylish navy polo we outline below can pull double-duty under a khaki blazer at the office — with the same slim grey chinos, mind you — and it can also work with a rugged denim jacket and tan chinos, plus leather sneakers, for a nice dash of high-low style. But first things first — let’s use it as the building block for this stylish Memorial Day outfit. Enjoy the long weekend, my friends!

An #OOTD that works for plenty beyond just Memorial Day — trust me.

  • The Polo: Flint and Tinder Supima AirKnit Polo, $58 — Here’s that timeless navy polo we talked about. Laidback enough for a holiday BBQ, cleaned up enough for dinner and drinks the rest of the summer. Job well done, Flint and Tinder.
  • The Chinos: Taylor Stitch Democratic Chinos in Ash, $98 — Classic grey chinos that are polished than jeans and not as casual as shorts — the Taylor Stitch Democratic Chinos work well if it gets chilly out this coming weekend, too.
  • The Shoes: Sperry Gold Cup Crepe Leather Oxford, $199.95 — Leather Oxfords with the styling potential of a dress shoe and the comfort of a pair of sneakers — perfect for spending a lot of time on your feet traveling, cooking out or exploring a Memorial Day vacation hang.
  • The Belt: Levi’s Premium Icon Leather Belt, $48 — As I always say, don’t sleep on accessories when traveling or dressing for a holiday weekend. The Premium Icon Leather Belt adds rugged appeal to a classic ensemble.
  • The Watch: Alsta Nautoscaph II Watch, $895 — If you’re going to be spending time on the water this weekend, the durable Alsta Nautoscaph II Watch is ideal. And if not? It’s still going to look great for Memorial Day weekend.
  • The Sunglasses: Raen Optics Wiley Alchemy Sunglasses, $195 — The Wiley Alchemy Sunglasses from RAEN Optics blend retro flair with modern quality — the perfect pair of shades to wear all Memorial Day weekend.
  • The Grooming Essential: Ursa Major 4-in-1 Essential Face Tonic, $26 — Keep your face in top shape to start summer with Ursa Major — handy no matter what your plans might be this weekend.
  • The Finishing Touch: CIVIC Merino Boxer in Heather Black, $55 — Always an essential no matter what else might be on your packing list or in the rest of your ensemble, these comfortable, functional and sustainably made CIVIC Merino Boxers are an underrated style essential.

Wherever your Memorial Day weekend takes you, I’m convinced that you can’t go wrong with picks like a timeless navy polo and a go-anywhere pair of pants like the ever-versatile, practically essential Taylor Stitch Democratic Chinos. Casual leather Oxfords are a nice substitute for classic white sneakers, particularly if you happen to be traveling or if your activities take you somewhere a little more dressy. And on the accessories front, the small details surely matter — the Premium Icon Leather Belt is a solid choice for long weekend style, as is the nautically inspired Alsta Nautoscaph II Watch; yet again, if you happen to be heading to the water, you just can’t go wrong. I’d urge you to both pack and wear the well-made CIVIC Merino Boxers, and I’d also urge you to stock up on the 4-in-1 Essential Face Tonic from Ursa Major. Stylish shades shouldn’t be a Memorial Day weekend afterthought, either — the Wiley Alchemy Sunglasses from RAEN Optics take care of business in that regard. That’s about all you need for the weekend, right? Stylish shades, slim chinos, a classic navy polo and the right accessories. Let me know on Twitter where you plan to take this outfit for Memorial Day weekend, folks.

Thanks for reading!

Just your average leather belt? Not quite. This one is made by the makers of your favorite denim.

Every guy needs a stylish leather belt he can reach for time and time again — the Levi’s Aberdeen Belt is the perfect complement to your favorite pair of light wash denim (Editor’s note: Click here for a pair of light wash jeans to buy now).
Redux Courg: Type A Watch — $319.98

A tough-as-nails timepiece that was practically made for summer.

Redux watches, simply stated, mean business. The Redux Courg: Type A Watch is a stylish casual timepiece fit for laidback patio beers or some serious off-road exploration in the warm months ahead.

Taylor Stitch Democratic Chinos in Ash — $98

Perfectly cut chinos to wear with your perfectly cut chambray shirt — for Memorial Day and beyond. Ya dig?

Stylish grey chinos are an underrated, secret style weapon. Wear ’em just like you might a navy or khaki pair, yet revel in the knowledge that you’ve added more versatility to your wardrobe with these Taylor Stitch Democratic Chinos.

Have any feedback on the latest edition of The List? What’s your favorite pick? I’m all about stylish boots for summer, so I can’t get enough of the Red Wing Heritage Rover Boots. Feel free to chime in via The Style Guide Facebook page. Cheers!

Style Suggestion: How to Dress for Memorial Day This Year

Check your calendars, hurry — it’s Memorial Day weekend comin’ at ya!  And if you’re wondering how to dress for Memorial Day, you’ll like today’s post. It’s the first real full summer weekend, and that’s much-welcomed around these parts. If you missed out on taking a spring road trip or hitting the road for spring break, it’s a chance to get away from town and hopefully enjoy some lovely weather and time with friends & the fam.  I’ll be trekking down to Florida for a  great long weekend with family, and I had the chance to travel to upstate New York for Memorial Day last year — both prime chances to break out some stellar #menswear. So, let’s assume you’ve got gear like a stylish leather weekend bag and a functional dopp kit at the ready — what are you going to wear at your destination? Be it exploring a boardwalk, strolling through a quaint downtown or catching some rays, today’s Style Guide suggestion has it all. Let me know what you think over on Twitter, and keep up with my fast-moving style on Instagram.

The Shirt: Criquet Shirts Club Shirt in Navy and Mint Stripe — $84

Criquet Shirts

A new take on the polo shirt, with a tailored fit and comfortable fabric.

Listen up: If you’re looking for a warm-weather staple that can work just as stylishly at a Memorial Day barbecue as at a patio bar, pick up the Criquet Shirts Club Shirt in Navy and Mint Stripe. Like the much-loved Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt — as seen in this #OOTD —  the Club Shirt is a modern, refined and comfortable take on your favorite polo shirt. It features both retro details, like cool stripes plus contrasting sleeve cuffs and collar, and a streamlined fit. Yessir, the Club Shirt could be a new summer go-to. Be sure to layer up with transitional spring outerwear if gets chilly.

Sutro Footwear

The Bottoms: Birdwell Beach Britches for Todd Snyder 311 Board Shorts — $138 OR Alex Crane Bo Shorts — $59.98

Alex Crane

Two options, two scenarios. Grab the right pair of shorts for play, grab the left pair of shorts to swim.

So, we’re tackling two different scenarios here. Let’s say your Memorial Day involves some time at the pool, the beach or the lake — break out the retro-inspired, durable and stylish Birdwell Beach Britches for Todd Snyder 311 Board Shorts. They’re made by hand, the color scheme is neutral and sharp, and they’re more tailored than your average pair of swim trunks. If, on the other hand, you’re manning the grill, the Alex Crane Bo Shorts, in a neutral and unexpected Sand color, are a prime pick (and they’ll contrast nicely with the striped Club Shirt).

The Sneakers: SeaVees Huntington Middie — $108

SeaVees

Versatile kicks that are a favorite of this blog for several reasons — including the easygoing good looks.

Is it any surprise that we’re reaching for classic, easily wearable and versatile slip-on sneakers like the SeaVees Huntington Middie? They’re a favorite for a number of reasons, from the durable chukka-like cut to the clean white color and the ability to wear to the beach, to the pool or to the boardwalk. You could even wear these ones with slim light wash jeans as you travel to your Memorial Day getaway, and they’re perfect to wear to kick back over a cold brew.

The Watch: Deep Blue Daynight Scuba Watch — $449.98

Deep Blue Watches

A striking watch with tough specs and dependable style for the road, for the beach and beyond.

Here’s where we really drive home the idea of versatile, accessible style. Heading out for a four-day weekend? You just might be all set with one watch — that’s right, just one. The Deep Blue Daynight Scuba Watch  is that very timepiece, what with the durable specs to work on land or at sea, with great style to go along with it. Take it in the pool, take it in the ocean and wear it to grill burgers after — the Deep Blue Daynight Scuba Watch merges rugged good looks with dependable style.

The Sunglasses: Raen Optics Arlo Sunglasses — $109.98

Raen Optics

Sharp and modern-yet-retro style in a pair of sunglasses that barely top $100.

We here at The Style Guide champion the idea of style that looks great and goes wherever you go — that’s also the case when it comes to accessories. And when you consider the vintage look and sharp style of the Raen Optics Arlo Sunglasses, you get all of that and then some. Handcrafted in France, the Arlo Sunglasses, just like the SeaVees Huntington Middie, can go all manner of places beyond Memorial Day weekend. And when you break ’em out to head to the beach, you just might be the best-dressed guy there.
Greats

The Essentials: Huckberry Explorer’s Cap in Charcoal — $39.98 AND Billykirk Simple Tote in Ash — $184.98

Billykirk

Two easy-to-wear and easy-to-pair summer style picks.

You’ll notice we’re sticking with a neutral, essential color palette of charcoal for these two fine and dandy everyday carry pieces. If you’re going to be spending time out in the sun — patio bar or beach — you’ll need some stylish protection from the sun. Enter the Huckberry Explorer’s Cap in Charcoal  — who doesn’t love a well-made, retro-inspired ballcap? And the Billykirk Simple Tote in Ash is a mighty fine way to lug around a six-pack, your sunscreen and perhaps stylish wireless headphones to wear at the beach.

Oxfords under $50 CAD_728x90

The Must-Have: Oars + Alps Athlete’s Grooming Kit — $43.98

Oars + Alps

The handy, simple-to-use and effective grooming kit to bring with you.

Whether you’re taking a plane, a train or an automobile (get it?) to your Memorial Day getaway, you need quick and easy grooming solutions. With effective performance and an easily packable nature, the Oars + Alps Athlete’s Grooming Kit could be just the solution you need. I covered it recently in my Style Pick of the Week series, and it’s a surefire winner in terms of keeping your skin looking fresh — no matter how many brews you have this weekend.

The “Gift” for the Party: GrowlerWerks 64oz. uKeg — $149

GrowlerWerks

With this uKeg, you’re instantly the hit of the party.

Now, the GrowlerWerks 64oz. uKeg is pretty hefty — to say the least. So, let’s assume it’s not necessarily coming with you on your trip. But if you’re hosting or merely heading across town, it’s a thoughtful gesture to bring along a spot of choice brew for that Memorial Day cookout. Best of all? It’s a functional piece geared to keep beer cold and fresh — yet the GrowlerWerks 64oz. uKeg has a nice dash of vintage style thrown in for good measure.

Florsheim

Folks, that’ll about do it in the way of our Memorial Day style roundup. From handy accessories like the stylish Huckberry Explorer’s Cap in Charcoal  to the durable Billykirk Simple Tote in Ash, make sure you start with the right basics for your trip or barbecue. Accent those functional pieces with the right gear for the occasion — namely, the Criquet Shirts Club Shirt in Navy and Mint Stripe oughta get the job done. And for versatile style, be sure to pack (or wear) the easygoing Alex Crane Bo Shorts and the versatile SeaVees Huntington Middie. I can’t emphasize enough the need to bring along a rugged dive watch — the Deep Blue Daynight Scuba Watch is the way to. And for time kicking back in the sun, the Raen Optics Arlo Sunglasses are handsome and effective.  OK, I think that’s all the basics covered — right? Enjoy the weekend, folks — we’ll see you out there!

What are your thoughts on the above Memorial Day style picks? What you add or subtract?

Style Pick of the Week: SeaVees Legend White Sneaker

Editor’s note: Expect these posts weekly detailing one standout item coveted by yours truly. Sometimes, these fit within budgetary restrictions and other times, they’re expensive splurges worth saving for. For more Wish List items from Beau, head here, and to see other Style Picks, head here.

A style that's stood the test of time -- and can certainly stand up to your summer wardrobe needs.

A style that’s stood the test of time — and can certainly stand up to your summer wardrobe needs.

The Style Pick of the Week series is back in full force, and we’re at it just in time for Memorial Day weekend. It’s the official start of summer, and it’s time (for the most part) to transition away from spring jackets and sweaters to classic warm-weather gear. And if you don’t have your footwear sorted in that regard, it’s high time for you to get on it. Chief among your (hopefully not-too frantic) purchases should be a true style essential — the classic white sneaker. Don’t know where to turn, or how to style it? Well, we’ll start by answering the first of those questions — make things simple by picking up an easygoing, crisp, stylish classic. The Seavees Legend Sneaker ticks all of those boxes, living up to its billing and then some. It’s been on the style scene for more than five decades, and it continues to get better and better every year. The silhouette’s stayed the same, yet it’s more current than ever. Not possible, right? Wrong. For just under $80, you’re getting a sharp poplin sneaker that’s lightweight yet durable, and fairly cost-effective, too. It’s also in high demand — you very well might have to wait until after June 6th to get your hands on a pair (maybe snag something off this list in the meantime). Having checked out a pair myself via the brand, they’re fit to claim the title of your new favorite summer sneakers (maybe?).
Frank & Oak

If you’re lucky enough to grab a pair now, know that they’re just as ready for a casual weekend date or a coffee run as they are for the office or the boardwalk. As near as I can tell, that’s about all your summer style scenarios sorted out (but bear with me(. Pair them with a navy blazer, a classic blue Oxford and slim khaki chinos for versatile workday style, and use that same combo to great effect when you have drinks later that night — or if you travel after work. Then, rock them with slim chino shorts and a casual pocket tee on the weekend. Oh, and if you’re feeling daring, clean them up and match them with a slim chambray suit and a casual white Oxford. Not enough options for you? Stylish white sneakers can act as an upgraded footwear option in place of flip-flops when you head to the beach (just kick the sneakers off before you hit the sand). And when you match up durable poplin sneakers with an essential pair of no-show socks, you’ve got a combo that can last and last through many summer outings to come thanks to the extra layer of protection between your foot and the sneaker. So, you’re getting style that can work at least five days a week and beyond, and you’re getting a classic white color that’ll hold up just fine with care.  What are you waiting for? Let me know how you like ’em over on Twitter, and see how I’ve styled mine over on Instagram.

Before you take off on your Memorial Day hijinks, know that we’ll have a look at my own weekend upstate coming on Monday. For more travel style, click here.

Style Suggestion: What to Wear on Memorial Day

Editor’s note: To see another Style Suggestion for Memorial Day, click here.

Just as it’s, somewhat incredulously, nearly time to prep for dressing for a summer wedding so too, is it time to get ready for Memorial Day.  There’s often a lot on the table — maybe you’ve got to sort out what to wear when traveling, and more crucially, what accessories to pack for a stylish trip. Hopefully, you’ll be somewhere relaxing, enjoyable and near the water.  If that’s the case, we’ll be tackling the standard weekend-casual get-up below, and yet tweaking it for the #menswear fan more interested in looking good than taking it easy when it comes to style. In fact, it’s situations like these where you can set yourself apart (in a good way) by upping the ante just a bit. As it were, small style upgrades can even trickle down to your Memorial Day accessories (we’re talking things like leather coasters and a brass bottle opener from Owen & Fred, for example). But that’s another matter. The ensemble below is what you should keep in mind for a barbeque, an afternoon of patio beers, or just a relaxing day with family and friends around town — it’s got pieces you’ll recognize (the polo among them), but they’re all updated. Curious what I’ll be wearing for Memorial Day? Follow me on Instagram (no pressure, though!). And if you have other gear you’d like to see featured, let me know on The Style Guide’s Facebook page.

The Polo: SWIMS Getaria Polo in White — $90

Slim, stylish and made from comfortable, moisture-wicking fabric.

Slim, stylish and made from comfortable, moisture-wicking fabric.

Is that pricey for a polo? Heck yes, it is. But the SWIMS Getaria Polo is not your standard baggy golf polo, nor is it your spongy, heavy pique polo of days past. This right here is a crisp, slim-fitting, comfortable polo that looks sharp and wicks sweat thanks to the PrimaLoft fabric. Yet, it doesn’t look at all like a sport polo — for one, there’s no pesky logo. And for another, the fit is actually trim, with sleeves that hit about mid-bicep. If it does get chilly, you could always grab a stylish spring jacket, and if a less expensive polo is more your thing, you could always grab one from this site’s guide to the best spring polos.

The Hybrid Short: SWIMS Paloma Hybrid Chino Short — $130

The functionality of a swim trunk, and the look of a tailored short.

The functionality of a swim trunk, and the look of a tailored short.

Now, some slim chino shorts would work well here, too. And yes, we’re going with another pick from the same brand … why? Well, that’s easy. Memorial Day travel is sometimes all about packing light. And if you’re only taking a day trip or an overnight, you want to maximize space — and the Paloma Hybrid Chino is a ridiculously effective way to do that. They perform like a swim short and they’ve got an inner mesh lining, yet they’ve also got the peached surface of a chino short. And the front tab closure and tailored fit mean they wear like a regular pair of shorts. Take these into the water and onto the dockside patio with reckless abandon (or something like that). Oh, and if you need a belt when you hop out of the water, grab one with a nautical influence.

The Shoes: Jack Erwin Cooper Boat Shoes — $125

A decidedly stylish boat shoe that's not what your father wore to the beach.

A decidedly stylish boat shoe that’s not what your father wore to the beach.

Just when you thought you’d sworn off boat shoes for good, the style comes roaring back — in a very, very good way. Jack Erwin’s new boat shoes are crisp and uniquely stylish, built on a loafer last for an elongated profile that’s far different from more classic styles. They’re available in Navy Leather, Slate Nubuck and the Caramel Nubuck you see here, and they feature a white rubber outsole for sleek styling (again, different than other boat shoes). The great thing is, these would also work just as well with navy chinos and a white Oxford at the office, and in this case, they’ll set you apart from other flip-flop wearing fellas.

The Socks: Pair of Thieves Cool Hand Luke No-Show Socks — $10

Socks that don't slide up -- critical given the type of footwear you'll be rocking.

Socks that don’t slide up — critical given the type of footwear you’ll be rocking.

So, while you very well might be in and out of the water this Memorial Day weekend, there’ll come a time when you need to slip on stylish shoes (like the Jack Erwin boat shoes above). And in keeping with those sleek shorts and sharp polo, you’re going to want a pair of socks that blends in seamlessly. Pair of Thieves uses designs that don’t look half-bad when worn on their own, and lucky for you and me both, this pair of socks slides nicely into shoes that are fit for the water or the walkway. Plus, the price is very agreeable. So agreeable, you just might be able to use the money you save for another beer.

The Watch: Timex Waterbury Dive Watch — $110

Nothing too fancy or expensive, yet every bit as solid.

Nothing too fancy or expensive, yet every bit as solid.

It’s not often you’ll find a pair of swim shorts that cost more than a watch, but that’s the case here — yet, you still get quality and durability for which Timex is known. This stainless steel Waterbury is part of the heritage line introduced by the brand to commemorate 160 years in business (yes, 160), and it should reliably do the job as far as dive watches go (although in that sense, it’s only water-resistant to 50 meters). Even still, it’s tough to beat the combo of price, looks and simple style that should fit right in alongside a refined-yet-casual ensemble.

The Hat: Bridge & Burn “B” Flat Wool Cap — $48

No need to go with a Nike cap here, ehh?

No need to go with a Nike cap here, ehh?

Although it’d be easy to throw on a simple athletic logo cap, we’re going for something a bit more stylish today. Bridge & Burn produces essentials that are timeless yet incorporate a rugged, somewhat outdoors-y flair. That’s the case with this neat wool cap, which features classic six-panel design and a simple, smart logo (and if your name happens to start with the letter B…). Like worsted wool found in four-season suits, the wool in this hat should be breathable and crucially, offer protection from the sun.

The Sunglasses: J. Crew The Jack Sunglasses in Silver Navy — $98

A new (yet already-classic) option from a brand that nails all kinds of style staples.

A new (yet already-classic) option from a brand that nails all kinds of style staples.

Did you think we forgot these guys? Not quite. If the solid good looks and very agreeable price are any indication, you’ll likely be seeing a lot of J. Crew’s new sunglasses around The Style Guide in the coming weeks and months (including in this site’s recent summer sunglasses guide). The Jack from J. Crew is simple, straightforward and classic in nature, with some brighter blue lenses to amp things up a bit. The frame shape should definitely work with lots of face types, and the color goes nicely with grey chino shorts, white polo and caramel nubuck boat shoes. Not a bad way to finish things off, ehh?

The above outfit certainly doesn’t incorporate a lot of bold prints, crazy styles or even unexpected swerves — yet it’s the colors and textures, from the unexpected boat shoes to the hybrid shorts and deceptively performance-ready polo, that make all the difference. Essentials like a stainless steel watch and aviator sunglasses are going to effectively get the job done no matter where you go. And if you pair these pieces with other must-haves — say, a cool denim tote bag or a nice leather lanyard — you’re going to be set in matters of style for this trip and several to come.

Style Suggestion: Memorial Day

Memorial Day really is one of the first significant outdoor occasions of the spring and summer for many around the country – after a long winter, summer’s imminent, and the holiday might bring with it some travel and time with friends and family. Ideally though, it involves getting outdoors for a little bit of everything — maybe a barbecque, a trip to the water or a little exploring. But what do you wear for such an occasion? Tweaking the standard outdoor get-up doesn’t take that much work — and you can support some quality brands in the process.

The Shirt: Buck Mason Navy Crew Slub Tee — $24

Small design touches make this a better option than a regular tank top or ratty old T-shirt.

Small design touches make this a better option than a regular tank top or ratty old T-shirt.

First seen not too long ago on this site’s roundup of the best T-shirts for spring and summer, this pick is much more than just a T-shirt. The deep navy color and slubby texture differentiate it from a plain old tee, and the rounded hem and slouchy collar are added design touches, too. The fact that it’s American-made doesn’t hurt, either. If the situations calls for a polo, you could always pick up a cheap yet well-designed option from this year’s Michael Bastian x Uniqlo collaboration or perhaps a nice short-sleeve buttondown from Ernest Alexander.

The Shorts: J. Crew Factory Stadium Short in Chambray — $29.50

Sporty elements like the elastic waistband mesh with an airy chambray fabric in these shorts.

Some might argue that these are just a shorter version of jogger pants – why add in something like a drawstring waistband to a pair of shorts? Well, when you’re out and about on Memorial Day, you might find yourself playing catch, grilling or taking a hike — the elastic waistband adds a casual and functional element to these chambray shorts, while the fabric and construction are a notch above athletic shorts (no belt needed, either). If you find they’re still too casual, you could grab a more refined pair from this list.

The Sneakers: GREATS Brand White Wilson Sneakers — $49

A durable captoe and the crisp white color make these the perfect high-low sneaker option.

A full review of these sneakers can be found here  — but in short, they’re the ideal combination of excellent looks for a stellar price. They’re quite a bit cheaper than a pair of similar white kicks from the revamped Converse Jack Purcell line, they look more crisp than a pair of Chuck Taylor All-Stars (no pesky logo or side stripe on the sole), and they’re still functional enough to move around in — plus, at that price they can take a bit of a beating without too much worry. If you want a more no-frills option, you could always pick up a leather slip-on (the latest release from GREATS) or a beater pair of  canvas Vans sneakers.

The Socks: Richer Poorer Beginner No-Show 2-pack — $15

No-show socks that'll help your sneakers fit better and last longer.

No-show socks that’ll help your sneakers fit better and last longer.

No-show socks are among those essentials for the warmer weather that can make quite a big difference — they prolong the life of your sneakers and help your kicks fit better while avoiding the foot funk that can come from going barefoot with shoes. The simple design options for Richer Poorer socks mean these are a better choice than no-show or low-cut athletic socks, too.

The Sunglasses: J. Crew Factory Tortoiseshell Sunglasses — $19.50

Mighty cheap but still stylish.

Some people are all about their sunglasses and really dig expensive pairs – if you’re not one of those people, or if you’re the type to lose them or sit on them throughout the summer, it doesn’t hurt to snag a pair or two of these cheap shades. You still get a unique frame shape, neat tortoiseshell pattern and the confidence of buying from J. Crew Factory — better than a drug store pair, right? You could always spring for a customizable pair of Ray-Ban’s New Wayfarers or an American classic, Randolph Engineering Aviators.

The Watch: Timex Weekender Slip-Thru Strap Watch — $40.45

A no-frills design that takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

A no-frills design that takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

Timex watches are renowned for the combo of price and durability they provide. The company doesn’t produce anything overly fancy, but its Weekender series works with plenty of NATO watch straps and provides a classic, clean design that’s not too casual or dressy. In this case, the red and blue stripes of the strap play off the blue in the shirt and the grey of the shorts, although a red floral NATO strap would also provide a fun pop of pattern and color. An efficient field watch would also work here.

With some slight tweaks, this same outfit template could work for nearly any warm-weather situation in your future — and either way, I hope your Memorial Day entails great times with friends and family … and maybe a cold beer or two.
