Zoomed product image

Folks, welcome once more to The Friday Read, where I give you the proper tools to head into your weekend in style. Considering that we’re rolling into early fall, at least on the calendar, I’d recommend you do yourself a favor in this shortened version of my weekly recap and pick up one of the best men’s sweaters from Buck Mason. Kind of like the vintage Buck Mason sweater seen above, yes? I’ll be adding that one to my wish list as we roll into the fall season in earnest.

On another note, it was a short but very busy week in New York City, one that rolls on right now: It’s New York Fashion Week once again. After a year-plus of virtual shows, it’s been thrilling and fun to safely get back out there and see everything from emerging designers at New York Men’s Day to the inspiring gala put on by Runway of Dreams last night. As it were, I have plans to attend more shows yet today, so stay tuned to my Instagram for more NYFW highlights. In the meantime, here are a few brief highlights from this week in the world of menswear and writing by yours truly. Cheers!

Laphroaig Cairdeas 2021 Pedro Ximenez 3
  • The headline mentions Laphroaig whisky above, so that’s where this entry comes into play. More to the point: I had the chance to review the latest Laphroaig whisky launch following a summer road trip upstate to experience outstanding Scotch and outstanding community, and you’d do well to add some to your bar cart via my latest dispatch for Maxim.
  • Let’s keep it a bit more casual in today’s shortened NYFW dispatch. Head on over to The Manual to get my guide to the best, coziest and most stylish sweat shorts to wear to work from home and lounge around in comfort this weekend. It’s really that simple!
  • Here’s one more recommendation before I let you go for the weekend: The latest and greatest from Faherty Brand is absolutely worth your time. It’s a rugged shirt jacket that’s perfect for layering, so be sure to check out my guide on the best shirt jacket of the moment, and be sure to shop accordingly.

Folks, that’ll do it for today’s Friday Read in the midst of a jam-packed New York Fashion Week. Stay safe, stay stylish and thanks for reading!

The Thursday Buy: Layer Up with Faherty Brand’s Quilted Fleece CPO for Fall

We’re already barreling through September, believe it or not, and that’s why you should have your sights set on the best new fall menswear from, among other retailers, Faherty Brand. Of course, any menswear wardrobe should be stocked with the best seasonal style essentials, but there are just a few companies in particular that really seem to get the spirit of the best fall menswear in particular. After all, what could be more seasonally friendly than layering up with the rugged-yet-soft, extremely comfortable Faherty Brand Epic Quilted Fleece CPO? If that name sounds like a handful, well, rest assured that Faherty Brand lives up to the promise of “epic” quality in crafting one of the best shirt jackets for men, and that’s really saying something.

I’ve become a fan of Faherty over the years through the brand’s use of fine, premium materials and extremely high-quality construction, something that echoes across the board whether you’re in the market for a short-sleeve henley in the hot months or something like the perfect flannel shirt for cold weather. In that sense, the Faherty Brand Epic Quilted Fleece CPO is just about everything you could ask for in a rugged fall layer, starting with the military-focused origins of the style (so modeled after the type of versatile and durable jackets worn by Chief Petty Officers).

SHOP: The Faherty Brand Epic Quilted Fleece CPO

Naturally, Faherty brings things forward into the 21st century with the Faherty Brand Epic Quilted Fleece CPO using a cotton-polyester blend, well-made quilted construction and contrasting nylon fabric for some visual interest when layered up this season. The Faherty Brand Epic Quilted Fleece CPO is especially sharp in the navy colorway shown here, which means you can wear it over shades of grey (as in, a rugged long-sleeve henley) or even a vibrant plaid shirt. Antique brass snaps offer up another bit of durability as far as one of the best men’s shirt jackets is concerned, and you get the true “shirt-jacket” feel through waist welt pockets.

Faherty Brand delivers yet again

To me, the Faherty Brand Epic Quilted Fleece CPO is best worn on casual, cool fall mornings, subbed in as a blazer substitute for an end-of-week meeting or thrown on as you pack up the car for a safe fall road trip. It works more than serviceably in each of those situations, providing warmth, style and rugged appeal. Of course, you’re shelling out just a bit more for the Faherty Brand Epic Quilted Fleece CPO than your average layer from a fast-fashion brand (it retails for $198 at Fahery Brand), but think of it like style you can count on and trust, all the while. Throw in the fact that you can select from multiple color options, and Faherty Brand has every base covered with this reliable, all-new fall layer.

See Now, Buy Now: Mack Weldon’s Stormchaser Jacket is the Best Fall Travel Jacket

The good folks at Mack Weldon continually prove why the company is one of the best menswear brands of the moment, from ease of service to high-quality products designed to move you from season to season. That’s the case whether they’re producing one of the best fall jackets for men — the subject of today’s post — or whether the focus happens to be, say, the best T-shirt for spring or the ideal pants to wear back to the office. There’s lots to love with Mack Weldon, and when you check out the Mack Weldon Stormchaser Jacket to carry you into and through blustery early fall days, you’ll certainly realize why they might just be your new favorite men’s style brand. That’s high praise, but I’d guarantee there’s something for everyone at Mack Weldon, assuredly including one of the best jackets for men.

It’s the brand’s first rain jacket, and although that might seem like something you more closely associate with spring, it’s all the better to keep handy as fall weather rolls through town, especially with outdoor road trips top of mind. The Mack Weldon Stormchaser Jacket is built to exacting standards and manages to clock in at below $200, impressive when you consider the sort of functionality you’re getting here. It features a fully seam-sealed interior, keeping you dry while maintaining the composed exterior of a lightweight rain jacket. Bonded pockets also protect your everyday carry essentials, another must-have for fall adventures.

SHOP: The Mack Weldon Stormchaser Jacket

Crucially, the super-functional and sleek Mack Weldon Stormchaser Jacket is as stylish as it is functional, boasting a sleek design and a sleek matte finish in two highly wearable colors. It’s the perfect sort of jacket to add to any wardrobe of existing Mack Weldon style staples, including the brand’s Tech Chinos and perhaps a breathable Oxford shirt. You can also wear it accordingly atop a sweater from Mack Weldon, all the better to really drive home versatile, go-anywhere style.

Get this durable rain jacket now

Mack Weldon has you covered

It’s going to keep you dry on the road and at home, and it helps that the built-in adjustable hood is also rather sleek, not overly bulky. It seems like, as with most Mack Weldon gear picks, the brand really has thought of every little detail, right down to the Velcro cuffs on the Mack Weldon Stormchaser Jacket. It’s also worth noting once again that the sub-$200 price works well for most any budget, especially if you’re OK with buying a rain jacket you can layer and wear in multiple seasons (which you certainly should be!). The Mack Weldon Stormchaser Jacket is at once underrated and essential, and it belongs on your back heading into fall.

#OOTD: How to Wear an Overshirt For Fall

It’s been a busy few weeks when it comes to fall style essentials and surveying the seasonal landscape here at The Style Guide. You might have even noticed a few posts in our new Tuesday Steal series replacing the traditional Tuesday #OOTD slot. But we’re back at it today with a new ensemble, and not a moment too soon for early fall. Let’s get to business. How to wear an overshirt for fall really does start with one of the best men’s overshirts, and the fact that it’s coming at you by way of Flint and Tinder is absolutely a huge bonus. It’s also accented by another stone-cold style essential, the kind of layer you won’t want to leave home without, and that’s one of the best men’s henleys for fall.

Shop an essential fall overshirt now

Today’s #OOTD shows you how to wear it

Now is the time to really let the building blocks of your seasonal wardrobe shine, and that’s where today’s #OOTD comes in. Gone are the days (hopefully) of sweating it out this summer and trying to figure out, say, how to wear chinos in the heat. No sir, fall brings with it some of the best times of the year for layering and for rugged adventure (even if said adventure simply involves a brewery tour and some cold, fresh beer). And of course, that means this look is filled with rich seasonal colors (think faded brown, tan and olive). But it all comes down to the gear itself. I think that you’ll quickly find the Flint and Tinder CPO Shirt Jacket delivers on everything you need in a stylish shirt jacket in this transitional time of year, from the lightweight construction to the durable and functional styling potential. If you’ve been stowing away your “shacket” through the hot summer months, it’s time to let it back out into the open, just in time for the best season in menswear. Let’s get back in the saddle with today’s #OOTD, shall we?

  • The Overshirt: Flint and Tinder CPO Shirt Jacket, $148 — This versatile overshirt, one of the best overshirts for men, is a study in durability and wear-anywhere style potential. It’s made with a blend of cotton and spandex for comfort and stretch in spades.
  • The Henley: Buck Mason Pima Curved Hem Henley, $55 — This won’t be the last time we talk about one of the best men’s henleys for fall. This one is just lightweight enough to layer up comfortably on breezy fall days.
  • The Rugged Fall Pants: Filson Dry Tin 5-Pocket Pants, $135 — You can wear these rugged work pants just about anywhere, from the trail to a distillery or at home around a fire pit. Filson has long delivered the goods, and they continue to do so here.
  • The Boots: Rhodes Footwear Bozeman Boots, $225 — Complete with a well-built moc toe, rich leather and a comfortable-yet-durable wedge sole, these classic moc toe boots are ready for anything this fall.
  • The Watch: Shinola Runwell Automatic Watch, $1,095 — What’s not to love about this handsome, heritage-worthy leather watch? It’s more suited for weekend outings than rough-and-tumble wear, but you’ll be able to get plenty of use out of it this season.
  • The Hat: Howler Brothers Camp Howler Snapback, $35 — A classic ballcap is the only way to top off this outfit, especially one with a distinctive, retro logo. Throw it on at a moment’s notice to get out the door and hit the road.
  • The Wallet: Satchel & Page Slim Bifold, $70 — Could your everyday carry use a refresh? This elegant, hard-wearing leather wallet for men is just what the doctor ordered. It’ll break in beautifully with everyday use this season.
  • The Everyday Carry: Satchel & Page Slim Mailbag, $475 — No matter what you’ve got to haul (your headphones and a book or laptop, perhaps?), this remarkably stylish leather messenger bag is going to serve you well for years to come.

If you ask me, I’d say this #OOTD does just about everything you could ask of it this season. It’s got versatility and multiple styling options available by way of the two top layers, like a stylish shirt jacket and one of the best men’s henleys for fall. You can wear the henley on its own and keep the shirt jacket handy in your extremely cool, stylish leather messenger bag, for example. And it’s all helped along by the perfect blend of form and function via Filson’s rugged work pants, which can be worn to do actual work as easily as they can be worn to grab fall weekend beers. As I always say, no fall ensemble is complete without the right pair of boots, like the classic moc toe boots shown above from my friends at Huckberry. It doesn’t get any better than boots that can be broken in over time, and the same can be said for your other EDC essentials, like your newfound, supremely stylish leather wallet for men, courtesy of Satchel & Page. Invest in the best and reap the rewards this fall. I’m also of the opinion that you’ve got to keep your accessories on point, and that means finishing this outfit off with the right combination of high and low: An investment-level leather watch, not to mention an eye-catching ballcap. You’re ready for anything between those two fan favorites. Where will this #OOTD take you? Be sure to let me know in the comments below. Stay stylish this fall!

Style Pick of the Week: Mott and Bow Merino Wool Crew – The Best Early Fall Sweater

It’s nearly time to stop the process of shedding layers for the summer, and instead focus on layering up for early fall. Enter today’s Style Pick of the Week, one of the best men’s sweaters for early fall. Seasonal dressing is the name of the game, and just as you rely on Mott and Bow to come through with, say, the best pocket tee or the best jeans for summer, you can also count on the to deliver one of the best sweaters for men. Made with versatile, surprisingly lightweight merino wool, the Mott and Bow Light Merino Wool Crew is the wear-anywhere sweater you need in your closet starting right now. The best part is, you can even get 10 percent off orders of less than $150, or a free beanie or scarf with orders of more than $150. Talk about a quick and effective way to kill two birds with one stone, as it were, when it comes to getting dressed for early fall and beyond.

america

Think of it like the perfect sweater to wear with jeans, especially back to a more casual office or out on an early fall weekend stroll. The fact that it layers up nicely over a Mott and Bow T-shirt or with a stylish, on-sale Mott and Bow buttondown shirt is also an added bonus, but it only gets better from there. Coming from a company that started out by only focusing on the best jeans for men, that’s not bad utility and style to have in your closet – not bad at all. And another bonus? First-time customers can get 10 percent off at Mott and Bow with the code beau10. Let’s keep on scrolling through the list of why that’s an outstanding idea, shall we?

SHOP: The Mott and Bow Light Merino Wool Crew

Fittingly, it’s the fabric that makes the Mott and Bow Light Merino Wool Crew such a solid seasonal buy (and certainly, one of the best sweaters for early fall). Merino wool is nice and lightweight to begin with, filled with moisture-wicking, breathable and anti-microbial properties. The weave here is definitely thicker than your standard merino wool T-shirt, but layering the Mott and Bow Light Merino Wool Crew should prove a snap. You can even throw a rugged waxed trucker jacket over top of it, without risking getting too hot (even on a breezy, cloudy fall day). Your new favorite sweater is also as wearable as it gets, either at the office atop an Oxford shirt or worn over a soft cotton T-shirt for a weekend coffee outing.

Everlane.com Low Cost. High Quality. Classic wardrobe essentials for less!

The crewneck design makes it easier to layer over a tee than a V-neck sweater, but you can also throw on the Mott and Bow Light Merino Wool Crew atop a Mott and Bow denim shirt with ease. And in a color like Cobalt Blue, it goes with pretty much anything and everything in your wardrobe (certainly, that list also includes Mott and Bow jeans and Mott and Bow chinos). Whatever you expect out of a great fall sweater, the Mott and Bow Light Merino Wool Crew can deliver everything you need, be it at your 9-to-5 or your favorite brewery. Layer up accordingly, folks.

The Friday Read: The Best Labor Day Sales, Taylor Stitch Shirting & Rugged Fall Menswear

The Jack in Navy Stripe | Taylor Stitch - Eco-Stylist | Fall outfits men, Business casual men, Mens street style

If you ask me, it’s pretty hard to believe we’re rolling into Labor Day weekend. Where did the summer go? I spent a solid chunk of time in Michigan, took trips upstate with Laphroaig and Eddie Bauer (geared up accordingly) and yet, here we are talking already about the best Labor Day sales and fall menswear from brands like Taylor Stitch. I’ll have a full list of standout long weekend sales to shop below, but it’s the San Francisco-based retailer I’ve been especially impressed with as of late. In fact, if you need new Taylor Stitch menswear, the long weekend is an ideal time to get it: The long-running brand is offering 20 percent off sitewide (including new releases) and giving you an additional 20 percent off its already-discounted Taylor Stitch Workshop. These deals won’t’ be around for long (try next Monday the 6th), so you’d do well to load up that shopping cart with a few of my favorites from Taylor Stitch.

Besides shopping for some early fall style favorites (most of which you can also find my Shop By The Style Guide), I’ll be staying busy this weekend writing about one of my other passions – music – for an upcoming piece on a post-punk album by a Scottish rock band… any guesses?? Look for it soon at Merry-Go-Round Magazine. I’m also hoping to take advantage of what should be a more dry weekend than wet and wild weather that hit earlier this week via the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida. On the docket for me? Raising a beer at a Brooklyn brewery (follow along on Instagram to find out which!) and wrapping up work on my latest music-menswear-craft beer newsletter, The Style Guide In Brief — folks, it’s free to subscribe! In the meantime, I’ll give you plenty to pique your interest this weekend via the best Labor Day menswear sales.

The best men’s style essentials await

How’s that for the right way to kick off Labor Day weekend? Shopping and stocking up on new fall gear and end-of-summer style essentials is but one of the things to focus on this weekend. Elsewhere, I hope you get some time to kick back, relax, reflect on the summer (safely) with friends and family, and perhaps enjoy a cold beverage of your choice. I know I’ll be making an effort to do so, without a doubt. For now, thanks for reading and thanks for supporting The Style Guide!

The Thursday Buy: Get this Flint and Tinder Henley Sweatshirt for Early Fall Layering

What’s a guy to do when he wants one of the best layers for early fall, for those times when it’s not quite chilly enough to throw on an insulated jacket, but it’s too cold to rock your favorite T-shirt solo? That’s easy: Turn to a hybrid layer that represents the best of both worlds: Something like the Flint and Tinder Henley Sweatshirt. It’s got plenty going for it, starting with the fact that it hails from the same company that makes the famed Flint and Tinder Waxed Trucker Jacket, as surefire a fall style classic as you’re apt to find these days. Better still, it’s got the warmth of a sweatshirt and the rugged good looks of a henley, to boot. And on top of that, it’s on sale at Huckberry right now for under $64. That’s marked down from $98, so you’re getting quite the nice discount on one of your new favorite sweaters for fall — or is it a henley? You be the judge, but just know that you won’t be able to live without it soon enough.

Get your new favorite fall layer

The best of both worlds, with rugged style in spades

The Flint and Tinder Henley Sweatshirt checks all the right boxes if it’s rugged, casual style you seek. It’s practically made to be thrown on in laidback weekend situations, especially with vinyl spinning and hot coffee in hand. It’s really the construction that makes the Flint and Tinder Henley Sweatshirt stand out handsomely, as with most all things Flint and Tinder. It starts with super-soft, substantial-but-not-too-heavy French Terry cotton fabric, translated into a henley style with that three-button placket.

SHOP: The Flint and Tinder Henley Sweatshirt

You can wear it like a normal henley, sure, but the Flint and Tinder Henley Sweatshirt is made to be worn over a super-soft long-sleeve tee with faded stretch denim for the ultimate in weekend-ready comfort. It also looks good enough to be worn atop, say, a chambray shirt with stretch chinos back at the office on a relaxed fall Friday, and again, that’s the beauty of the versatility you get with the Flint and Tinder Henley Sweatshirt. USA-made construction and tough rubber buttons make this henley sweatshirt a serious keeper, despite the on-sale price.

It’s only available in Washed Navy right now, but that color should prove a natural pairing with everything from burgundy corduroys to tan work pants (no matter how little work you have on your weekend agenda aside from visiting a new brewery). Because it’s made by Flint and Tinder, consider that a bit of another guarantee of quality and long-lasting style. Simply put, the Flint and Tinder Henley Sweatshirt looks darn good, wears well with all of your favorite fall style staples, and keeps on trucking day after day, all season long. With fall on the way, upgrade your wardrobe accordingly.

See Now, Buy Now: Add the Taylor Stitch Yosemite Shirt to Your Fall Wardrobe

The Yosemite Shirt in Forest - Classic Men's Clothing | TS…

If you ask me, it’s never too early to add one of the best shirts for men to your fall wardrobe, even if we’ve just newly crossed over into September. No sir, there’s not quite a time like the present to get the much-loved, stone-cold classic Taylor Stitch Yosemite Shirt, especially in an array of new colors, so you best get on it. It’s all well and good that Taylor Stitch can reliably make plenty of all-season staples, like a classic men’s T-shirt, but fall weather really will be here before you know it, and that leaves you with just one choice in today’s See Now, Buy Now entry: The specific color of the Taylor Stitch Yosemite Shirt. I’ve talked plenty over the years about the importance of finding the right layers for fall, and beyond that, figuring out how to wear your new favorite fall shirt. Before we can get to that point, you’ve got to take the plunge on your own and snag the Taylor Stitch Yosemite Shirt for yourself. I’ve got two myself, and my Taylor Stitch Yosemite Shirt review is, quite simply, five stars.

Get the perfect fall shirt now

Taylor Stitch is the right way to go

It all starts with the right fabric and the right construction, a hallmark of plenty Taylor Stitch style essentials over the years from the San Francisco-based brand. That versatility and strong design is what makes the Taylor Stitch Yosemite Shirt such a fan favorite (it’s sold out numerous times over the years). I mentioned one of the toughest choices you might make today comes down to the color of the particular Taylor Stitch Yosemite Shirt you want to rock this fall, so it’s great news they seem to have come up with plenty of stock as we start September properly. What else makes this shirt a new fall must-buy? As always, I’m glad you asked.

SHOP: The Taylor Stitch Yosemite Shirt

The Yosemite Shirt in Forest - Classic Men's Clothing | TS…

The real standout with any version of the Taylor Stitch Yosemite Shirt has got to be the perfectly executed fabric, which is a soft-yet-substantial organic cotton chamois. It’s both sustainable and stylish, for starters, and wears nicely atop a Taylor Stitch T-shirt (it’s not scratchy or stuffy) as well as it wears atop a rugged thermal henley or even a Taylor Stitch Oxford shirt. It’s a true hybrid shirt in that regard, the kind that’s going to function more than handily on a fall morning hike or cold-weather camping trip.

That’s the beauty of shopping Taylor Stitch: You’re getting gear that you can count on, and gear that serves a purpose, time and time again. Flap chest pockets make this more like an overshirt, but you can reliably roll up the sleeves of the Taylor Stitch Yosemite Shirt as you would a normal flannel shirt. I’m partial to the deep and rich Forest color, which would just so happen to pop nicely against tan Taylor Stitch chinos or the brand’s selvedge denim (and I hope you’ve got a pair of both in your wardrobe). Either way, the rugged, classic and quick-selling Taylor Stitch Yosemite Shirt is as solid an option you’ll find as fall rolls your way in earnest. Stay stylish, folks!
