The List: This Is All the Best Menswear to Shop for October

Alright, it’s fall now … isn’t it? While last month we talked about the best rugged gear to buy for early fall, we’re getting deeper into a season that’s simply an excellent time to be a fan of #menswear. If you read The Style Guide, you know that fall brings the potential for all kinds of fun, from layering with rugged overshirts to stepping out in stylish leather boots and simply enjoying all the season has to offer. And that’s quite a lot — tailgates, apple orchard trips, craft beer festivals … you name it. In today’s edition of The List, we’re covering the best gear to buy for fall, and there’s quite a lot to cover.¬†Read on, shop away and let me know what you think over at The Style Guide Facebook page. Cheers.

SeaVees Legend Cordies Varsity Sneakers — $67.98

Corduroy in a pair of sneakers? Sure thing. SeaVees gets it right.

Your favorite classic sneaker brand — that’d be SeaVees — updates the Legend silhouette in fall-ready corduroy. Wear these with garment-dyed grey chinos and a light cotton sweater to head to class or the office.
BANKS River Knit Sweater in Desert Mist — $70

Cool stripes, a fall-ready color and an affordable price.

A stylish fall sweater for just $70? BANKS gets the balance of affordability and style just right with the casual, easygoing River Knit Sweater. Break this out to get coffee on a chilly fall morning, my friend.

Flint and Tinder 365 Pant in Slate — $98

With the cut of a five-pocket pant and a versatile color, the 365 Pant could become a fall go-to.

Want a pair of stylish casual pants that are cut like denim but look like chinos? Perhaps in a rich, neutral color? Flint and Tinder is here to help with the mobile, comfortable 365 Pant in Slate. Perfect when paired with classic suede chukkas.
CLAE Gregory Mid Sneaker in Latte Leather — $150

Richly crafted sneakers in a cool monochromatic shade — ideal for fall.

As seen in my Style Guide weekend trip to Nashville, the CLAE Gregory Mid is a handsome, retro-inspired pair of high-top sneakers that practically scream fall. Best worn with broken-in denim and a slim crewneck sweater.
BANKS Tombstone Jacket — $130

A rugged silhouette meets plenty of warmth and neat layering potential. Throw this over a striped henley and you’re good to go.

What are you going to wear with the BANKS River Knit Sweater? Why, the just-as-affordable, just-as-rugged BANKS Tombstone Jacket ought to do the trick. You get a warm sherpa lining and a neat faded blue color with the Tombstone Jacket, too.
WP Standard Large Messenger Bag — $310

A beautiful messenger bag with more than enough room for your everyday essentials.

If you want to upgrade your everyday carry in style, the gorgeous, finely crafted and heritage-quality WP Standard Large Messenger Bag is the one to buy. I’ve tested out this bag around Brooklyn as of late, and it’s held up wonderfully (check out my Instagram for more).
Marshall Stanmore Bluetooth Speaker — $349

A new favorite home addition, without a doubt.

So, it’s a fall Friday night. You’re kicked back around the backyard fire pit, IPA in hand, stylish cotton sweater on … and you’re listening to the Marshall Stanmore Bluetooth Speaker. Handsomely appointed and of excellent quality.

Saddleback Leather Rounded Leather Duffel Bag — $595

Saddleback Leather

A leather duffel bag of exceptional quality, more than ready for your next fall trip.

There’s quite a lot to say about the investment-level quality and standout design of this durable, beastly Saddleback Leather bag — but let me just say this: It could be the last duffel bag you ever need to buy.
Pantor Sea Lion Watch — $424.98

The perfect watch to offset, say, a rugged overshirt and broken-in denim.

If you’ve got other fall style essentials taken care of — pieces like a rugged henley and stylish leather boots — then a durable, stylish casual watch is the final missing piece of the puzzle. The¬†Pantor Sea Lion would look excellent with a chunky shawl collar cardigan and¬†American-made denim.
Relwen Waxed Snap CPO — $318

Search no more for a casual-yet-durable fall jacket — the Relwen Waxed Snap CPO is perfect.

If you’ve been wanting a do-it-all, rugged fall jacket — something to layer over an Oxford, a slim henley or a pocket tee — the durable nylon-cotton twill blend ¬†Relwen Waxed Snap CPO is here. If I didn’t know better, I’d say the Waxed Snap CPO is a perfectly rugged outer layer to wear to head to your favorite brewery.
Flint and Tinder 10-Year Hoodie in Navy — $98

The perfect hoodie? Darn near. Flint and Tinder don’t disappoint when it comes to terrific basics.

While we’re talking rugged fall layering, let’s talk Flint and Tinder. Products like the well-made, classic Flint and Tinder 10-Year Hoodie¬†certainly set the brand apart. Throw on the 10-Year Hoodie with a classic Oxford shirt and laidback denim to grab a weekend coffee or stroll through your favorite park.
Unmarked Rancher Derby Boot — $350

A handsome pair of boots finished with handmade toe embroidery.

While a pair of plain-toe, rugged leather boots are always welcome in matters of fall style, the Unmarked Rancher Derby Boot blends unique design touches with a classic silhouette for a nice change of pace.

With the¬†Unmarked Rancher Derby Boot, we’re closing out this week’s edition of The List. Have any particular favorites from this round? The¬†Relwen Waxed Snap CPO is my personal favorite, with plenty of rugged layering potential. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

Online Shopping Picks: These Are the Best Men’s Jackets for Fall

These are heady times we live in — busy times, too. If you’ve followed along with our Online Shopping Picks series on The Style Guide, you know that we’re all about getting you prepped for rugged fall style. And that continues today, in a big way. Putting together a rugged fall #menswear look is about the details — the big categories and the small ones, too. And in the way of essential men’s style for fall, ¬†outerwear is a pretty big category. So, we’ll get you shopping and thinking today. The best men’s jackets for fall feature durable construction, essential warmth and pleasingly rugged-yet-versatile style — that combination is going to take you a lot of places.

Some of the below picks, like the tough Taylor Stitch Bomber Jacket seen below, can work in both casual and tailored situations (try it with an American-made Oxford and a knit tie). And others — like the Bridge and Burn Thielsen Jacket — fit right in with the rugged climes of fall. Regardless, this list of rugged fall jackets should have you set for the season. For more #menswear than you can shake a stick at, follow me on Twitter or Instagram. Enjoy fall — soon enough, anyways!

#1.¬†Taylor Stitch Albion Jacket — $265¬†

A rugged and versatile piece that’s ideal for layering.

Yes indeed, ladies and gentlemen … the Taylor Stitch Albion Jacket tops our list, and with good reason. It’s the perfect transitional jacket to wear during early fall and on through November. Made from a custom-developed two-way stretch windshell nylon fabric, the Albion Jacket is a positively versatile layering piece. It’s even lined in fleece and is water-resistant — it’s a stylish fall jacket for layering over a rugged striped henley and teaming with classic dark denim.

#2. Abercrombie and Fitch Shera-Lined Corduroy Jacket — $160

A cozy jacket that evokes classic, timeless fall style.

Abercrombie and Fitch — a Style Guide favorite — continues to come roaring back season after season, and the Sherpa-Lined Curdory Jacket is a prime example of that. It evokes the kind of classic fall jacket that your dad or grandpa might have worn to do yard work, except this number features a slimmed-down fit and just as much warmth — plus added style points. Again, a slim striped henley and suede chukka boots are ideal companions.

#2.¬†Flint and Tinder Stretch Denim Trucker Jacket — $158

Flint and Tinder

This piece could very well be your new favorite denim jacket — agreed? Agreed.

Originally part of our See Now, Buy Now series, the Flint and Tinder Stretch Denim Trucker Jacket should be welcomed to this list with open arms. At least, I think so. Everyone needs a stylish denim jacket in their layering arsenal — the Flint and Tinder Stretch Denim Trucker features a crisp indigo color and the type of easygoing wearability that looks great with slim tan chinos and a white chambray shirt or a slim striped henley.

#3.¬†Bridge and Burn Thielsen Jacket — $238

A fall-ready color and durable cotton construction set this jacket apart.

If you’ve read our Style Guide Q+A with Portland lifestyle brand Bridge and Burn, you know they’re dedicated to making classic, straightforward pieces with a touch of Northwest style influence. And in this case, the Bridge and Burn Thielsen Jacket channels the kind of rugged durability you need this fall, and tosses in a healthy dose of style, too. The hard-wearing cotton outer and quilted liner of the Thielsen Jacket provide protection from the elements, while the rich Acorn color is a fall-ready shade. Who’s ready to hit the pumpkin patch, people?

#4. ¬†BANKS Tombstone Jacket — $130

BANKS Tombstone Jacket

Another warm, classic and durablly made piece of outerwear for the season.

The rugged fall style just keeps coming in spades with the BANKS Tombstone Jacket. A unique brand available via the great folks at Bespoke Post, the Tombstone Jacket channels classic style with a modern edge. Which is to say, the faded blue cotton exterior plays nicely off the golden sherpa collar, while the lined warmer pockets ensure you stay warm even at long, chilly tailgates. So, throw on the Tombstone Jacket and pass me a beer, will ya?

#6.¬†Taylor Stitch Long Haul Jacket in Cone Mills Selvage — $188

Taylor Stitch

A handsome denim jacket that’ll only get better with age.

Another jacket from Taylor Stitch on our list of the best men’s fall jackets? Yes indeed, you bet. The Long Haul Jacket is a much-loved silhouette from the brand, harnessing a slick, slim design with the power of Cone Mills denim. That’s right — Taylor Stitch teamed up with the country’s foremost denim mill on a rugged denim jacket that you can wear now over a chambray shirt and wear later over a stylish crewneck sweater. And that’s just the beginning, I’d wager.

#7.¬†Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket — $148

A faded shirt jacket that layers with darn near anything in your closet — a job well-done by Taylor Stitch.

Hey, might as well round out this list with more rugged menswear from Taylor Stitch, yeah? The Maritime Shirt Jacket made an appearance in our #OOTD series earlier this year — specifically when it comes to how to wear a rugged overshirt — and it’s guaranteed to impress. The Maritime Shirt Jacket features a cool sun-bleached finish, sturdy construction and the type of fit that works with slim chinos and wingtip boots or black denim in equal measure.

#8. ¬†Finisterre Petrichor Overshirt — $76.98

A durable, rugged silhouette with the strong fabrication to match.

Why exactly are we included an overshirt on this list of fall’s best jackets? Well, my friends — anything goes when it comes to stylish fall layering, and the construction and style of the Petrichor Overshirt is such that it can serve as both if needed. It’s an affordable stylish chore jacket that doubles as overshirt, and the densely woven cotton and cool khaki color make for a heck of a durable piece — so, sold on the¬†Petrichor Overshirt¬†yet?

Alright, friends — what’s your favorite pick of the above? Will it be the rugged versatility of the sturdy cotton¬†Petrichor Overshirt¬†or the sun-bleached cool of the¬†Maritime Shirt Jacket? Is it perhaps the classically styled BANKS Tombstone Jacket¬†or the rough-and-rugged¬†¬†Long Haul Jacket? Yes indeed, from sherpa-collar corduroy jackets from Abercrombie and Fitch to a durable cotton number like the¬†Bridge and Burn Thielsen Jacket, I hope you found this list helpful. It’s about finding the right fabrication and the silhouette that works for — because believe it or not, I’m sure once you try one of these rugged fall jackets, you’ll want to wear it as much as you can.

How’d we do with today’s post? What do you think of the above picks? Feel free to drop a note in the comments below, or hit me up on Twitter!¬†

#OOTD: Here’s Your New Favorite Blazer for the Season Ahead

Need a new blazer for fall? Better yet, need to know how to wear it? We’re getting down to business in today’s #OOTD on The Style Guide — as I always say, you’re going to like the results of this #menswear ensemble. Wearing a blazer in early fall is much the same as you might wear a blazer in the spring or summer, with a few key points of differentiation. We’re still relying on classic men’s style staples, from an American-made Oxford to slim charcoal trousers, but the differences comes in color and texture throughout this look — for instance, a pair of rugged leather boots from Hudson Shoes are in the mix today. Talk about rugged fall style, yes? And even the stylish leather watch from Timex that you see below features a bit more fall-ready texture and style. It’s all about dialing in the fit and making classic style essentials work for you — to your Style Guide author, this is the type of ensemble that works any day of the work week in September and October (and beyond!). You know what’s even better? You can easily layer up with a stylish crewneck sweater later this season as it starts to get chilly. How about that? Chime in with your thoughts on the below #OOTD in the comments or on Twitter — feedback is always welcome! Thanks, as always, for reading.

A cotton blazer matched with charcoal trousers and rugged leather boots — your ideal fall #OOTD.

The Blazer:¬†Abercrombie and Fitch Utility Blazer in Olive, $120¬†— Nod toward fall with a rugged cotton coat that’s part utility jacket-part blazer — the olive shade is a unique, seasonally appropriate color, too. Feel free to wear it with a rugged striped henley if you’re feeling more casual.

The Oxford:¬†Flint and Tinder Texas-Made Oxford, $64.98¬†— As versatile as ever, this classic white Oxford¬†¬†from perennial Style Guide favorite Flint and Tinder adds crisp style to this work-ready ensemble.

The Trousers:¬†Flint and Tinder 365 Pant in Slate, $98¬†— These versatile five-pocket trousers should work any time of the year — and the charcoal color of the Flint and Tinder 365 Pant makes them particularly ready for fall.

The Boots:¬†Hudson Shoes Lennon Boot in Tan, $270¬†— As first seen in a See Now, Buy Now feature on this site, Hudson Shoes makes a perfect pair of rugged leather boots — the tan leather nicely offsets the¬†Flint and Tinder 365 Pant.

The Belt:¬†Whipping Post Officer’s Belt in Natural, $78¬†— The best way to get into the spirit of rugged fall style is with similarly rugged accessories – this richly crafted natural leather belt from Whipping Post gets it done.

The Socks: Anonymousism Slub Crew Sock in Navy, $18 Stylish socks are an underrated, essential style accessory, and these textured navy Anonymousism socks fit right in with the rest of this stylish ensemble.

The Watch:¬†Timex Waterbury Watch in Red Wing Leather,¬†$139— In keeping with the rugged fall vibes of this outfit, a stylish leather watch from Timex, featuring Red Wing boot leather, is a nice pick-up.

The Essential Accessory:¬†Fellow Stagg x Pour-Over Set, $69¬†— To me, this outfit signifies work-ready, get-the-job-done style. So, you’re going to need to fuel up properly, ehh? This Fellow Stagg x Pour-Over Set should make just about the best pour-over coffee you can get at home.

So, I hope we’ve all got a better idea of how to wear a blazer for fall — I’ve got some ideas myself now! When you start with an easygoing cotton blazer with rugged styling details, the rest of the outfit falls into place. From slim charcoal trousers and an American-made Oxford to stylish leather boots from Hudson Shoes, these are the type of pieces you can wear again and again throughout the fall season. And when you consider the rugged style and affordability of the Timex Waterbury Watch, this outfit is that much better of a value. Even stylish socks from Anonymousism should provide both comfort and great looks, too. But there’s more! The rest of the season, you can also layer up the Abercrombie & Fitch Utility Blazer with plenty of other rugged style essentials. What’s your take on this #OOTD? #OOTD: How to Wear a Rugged Overshirt This Fall

This week’s #OOTD fun on The Style Guide continues in fine fashion — or should I say, fall fashion? That’s right — we’re truly starting to get into rugged fall style on the blog, from the menswear to wear on a fall trip to today’s focus: How to wear a rugged overshirt this season. ¬†The overshirt — particular a stylish Taylor Stitch overshirt as featured today — is as versatile a #menswear layering weapon as you’ve got in your fall style arsenal. Namely, it can function as both a shirt … and a jacket. For those days and nights when it’s not cold enough for a heavier top layer, an overshirt can pull double duty. Feel free to layer it over a slim striped henley or toss it on over another shirt — say, an American-made Oxford. Made with the right fabric (like the Japanese selvedge cotton found on the Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket seen here), it’s going to provide warmth from the chill¬†and earn you major style points at the same time. You’ll notice some other fall style touches, including stylish (yet tough!) Danner hiking boots and a classic field watch. This look is casual enough to fit in at an outdoor concert, it’s durable and rugged enough to wear to a fall tailgate … basically, a rugged overshirt is your ticket to versatile, casual style this season. Want more style tips? Follow me on Instagram. And let me know what you think of the below #OOTD in the comments below!

Rugged fall style

Classically rugged fall style — essential for a tailgate, a bonfire or a day trip. Gotta love the rugged Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket as seen here.

The Overshirt: Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket in Sea Washed Indigo, $118¬†¬†(When¬†Signing Up for Bespoke Post)¬†— Ahh yes, the well-made, well-crafted and exceptionally stylish¬†rugged overshirt¬†we discussed earlier. ¬†This¬†Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket¬†features selvedge detailing and a modern fit.

The Henley: Taylor Stitch Mercerized Merino Henley, $125¬†— What are you layering under your Taylor Stitch overshirt? A rugged Taylor Stitch Mercerized Merino Henley, of course. The stripes add visual interest, and the merino wool adds breathability and classic fall style.

The Denim:¬†DSTLD Slim Jeans in Charcoal Overdye, $85¬†— You could certainly throw on a pair of classic dark denim for monochromatic style, but these slim charcoal jeans from direct-to-consumer Los Angeles brand DSTLD offer a neat contrast in terms of color and texture.

The Boots: ¬†Danner Vertigo 917 Boots, $220 —¬†Now, you could easily swap in a pair of stylish leather sneakers here, yet these hybrid hiking boots from Danner convey both rugged style and functionality — a wise bet if you end up on your feet for longer than expected (perhaps an Octoberfest bar crawl, ehh?).

The Belt:¬†Sturdy Brothers Everyday Belt in Chestnut, $80 — We always say that the little details make the difference here at The Style Guide, and this tough leather belt from Sturdy Brothers gets those details right.

The Socks:¬†Arvin Goods Crew Socks (Three-pack) — $24¬†— If you read this blog regularly, you recognize the name Arvin Goods — the brand makes functional, understated socks at a great price. These affordable crew socks should team nicely with your Danner hiking boots.
The Watch: Momentum Watches Flatline 42 Fabric Watch,¬†$164.98¬†— When your outfit is filled with adventure-ready pieces, it makes sense to grab a classic field watch. The Flatine 42 Fabric Watch from Momentum Watches gives you the durability and style you need.
The Fall Essential:¬†Knight Co. Complete Moisturizer,¬†$24¬†—¬†Don’t overlook the importance of keeping your grooming game tuned up through the fall months — especially as colder weather descends. The Knight Co. Complete Moisturizer should prove both premium and quite helpful with that goal.

As October approaches and crisp weather rolls into town, I’d say you surely need a rugged layering piece with plenty of potential — the¬†Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket¬†is going to be your ticket to essential fall style. From craft beer festivals to weekend coffee trips and perhaps a stylish fall weekend trip, there’s little that the¬†Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket¬†can’t do. Particularly when layered up with a rugged striped henley — also from Taylor Stitch — you’re going to be set for fall weekends aplenty. Charcoal denim from DSTLD is a nice way to mix things up visually, while the Danner Vertigo 917 Boots offer both comfort and durability for all-day style. And with its subtly fashionable design and tough construction, the¬†Flatine 42 Fabric Watch¬†is the ideal casual men’s watch to offset this ensemble. Of course, no outfit is complete without taking care of your men’s grooming essentials — who else needs that Knight Co. moisturizer in their medicine cabinet? At any rate, I hope this #OOTD gets you thinking when it comes to rugged fall style. Who’s ready for the season? I sure am!

Thanks for reading and cheers,

See Now, Buy Now: Step into Fall with These Rugged Leather Boots

Hudson Shoes

Striking leather boots, made with a natural patina and featuring durable construction.

When it comes to rugged fall style, you’re going to need some stylish leather boots — that’s just a stone-cold fact. And that’s where today’s See Now, Buy Now entry comes into play. Yes indeed, the Hudson Shoes Lennon Boots are an accessible, stylish and well-made pair of classic leather boots for the season ahead — possibly your new favorite leather boots? We’ll let you be the judge of that, though. ¬†Perhaps you’re already familiar with Hudson Shoes; the brand’s Lewiston Chukka is a recent favorite of your Style Guide author in particular. Versatility in your footwear rotation is key this season, though — that’s what makes the Lennon Boots an essential pick-up as the leaves turn and the air turns crisp. Tough lace-up boots, richly crafted and featuring durable construction, work in plenty of seasonal style scenarios, from a football tailgate to a farmer’s market trip or an evening at your favorite brewpub. And with their well-worn patina and small design touches like premium waxed laces, the¬†Hudson Shoes Lennon Boots¬†feature that tough-to-find blend of rugged good looks and versatile style — that’s surely enough to put ’em contention on any list of the best leather boots, right? Right.

That’s at least why I think you should break out the¬†Lennon Boots¬†with everything from slim dark blue denim and a rugged henley to an indigo trucker jacket and faded black denim. Both of those combos will work for a rock concert, a casual weekend stroll or an upstate road trip — can’t beat that, right? Now, about the price: The¬†Hudson Shoes Lennon Boots¬†will set you back about $270 if you buy via Bespoke Post (which you certainly should!). That makes them a bit of an investment, but from the Portuguese-made construction to the stylish design and excellent quality, the¬†Hudson Shoes Lennon Boots¬†are going to become a fall and winter go-to. So, as we say here at The Style Guide … see now, buy now … ehh?

Will the Hudson Shoes Lennon Boots be joining your fall #menswear rotation? Let me know in the comments or on Twitter!

#OOTD: Wear This Black Denim Jacket for Early Fall

How are you prepping for fall? And what are we excited about when it comes to #menswear? For your Style Guide author, I’m personally excited about a return to rugged layering in particular — including a refresher on how to wear a black denim jacket. Taking slightly unexpected, edgy pieces and mixing them together is one of the small joys of the season — take, for instance, the Roark Revival denim jacket we’re talking about in today’s #OOTD. It’s got just enough cool design touches to set it apart from your typical denim jacket, from the unique chest pocket detailing to the faded black color. And crucially, a jacket like the Roark Revival HWY 41 Jacket is going to be the perfect way to step into fall. It makes for a great layer on chilly weekend days and week nights alike, and that edgy style is going to help you go everywhere from a rock concert to a bar crawl to a weekend coffee run. When paired up with other fall style essentials — including classic suede chukka boots and a rugged striped henley — you’re going to be able to take on everything from a weekend getaway to a casual date night out seriously. So, are you ready to learn about your new favorite denim jacket? Good. Then let’s go! Follow me on Instagram for more insider style tips, plus a dose of craft beer and live music.

Rugged Fall Style

A mix of edgy pieces — like the Roark Revival denim jacket — and classic offerings, like a rugged henley.

The Jacket:¬†Roark Revival HWY 41 Denim Jacket, $79.98¬†— As discussed above, the affordably priced, well-crafted and uniquely edgy¬†Roark Revival HWY 41 Jacket¬†is the unexpected fall layering piece you didn’t know you needed — until now.

The Henley:¬†Taylor Stitch Mercerized Merino Henley,¬†$98 (When¬†Signing Up for Bespoke Post)¬†— When is it worth it to pay nearly $100 for a henley? When that rugged henley is made by Taylor Stitch.

The Pants:¬†Original Penguin P55 Brushed Cotton 5-Pocket Pant, $89¬†— Want to shake things up from your typical rotation of slim blue denim ¬†this fall? Reach for a pair of tailored cotton 5-pocket pants for a bit of high-low style.

The Boots: Hudson Shoes Corelli Suede Dip Dye Boots,¬†$198¬†(When¬†Signing Up for Bespoke Post) ¬†— Want a pair of footwear that’s going to fit right in with the rock n’roll vibes of this ensemble? Suede chukka boots are going to be your best bet — Hudson Shoes¬†knocked it out of the park with the Corelli Suede Dip Dye Boots.

The Socks:¬†Arvin Goods Crew Socks (Three-pack),¬†$30¬†— Sustainably made, understated socks are what Arvin Goods excels at making — these stylish crew socks fit the bill nicely.

The Belt:¬†Sturdy Brothers Everyday Belt in Natural,¬†$80¬†— Don’t forget about the small style details. Particularly when your outfit is packed with rugged basics, your belt should fall in that same category aesthetically. Sturdy Brothers gets it right with the Everyday Belt.

The Watch:¬†Szanto Aviator Automatic Watch —¬†$289¬†— Rugged good looks, tough durability and a subtly stylish design make the Szanto Aviator Automatic Watch¬†the right timepiece to offset this outfit.

The Grooming Essential:¬†Blind Barber 60 Proof Hair Wax, $18¬†— What if I told you for under $20, you could get a true men’s grooming essential to help complement this sharp look? Easy choice, right?

When the foundation of your outfit is the rugged, edgy and unique Roark Revival HWY 41 Jacket, it makes filling in the pieces around it pretty easy. And when those pieces happen to include a mix of high-low style essentials like brushed cotton pants and a rugged striped henley? Well, the only question now is where that outfit can take you.   Stylish, sharp footwear like the  Corelli Suede Dip Dye Boots are a great way to step into early fall thanks to their unique texture and versatility, while a tough timepiece like the Szanto Aviator Automatic Watch  is going to complement plenty of seasonally ready outfits. Remember to turn to durable, dependable brands like Sturdy Brothers to upgrade your accessories, and know that the little touches in terms of grooming (like using Baxter of California hair wax) are going to take your ensemble to the next level. So, what do you think of this #OOTD? Where would you wear the Roark Revival HWY 41 Jacket this fall?

Thanks for reading, as always!

Style Suggestion: How to Wear a Chore Coat This Fall

Editor’s note: Peruse the site for more menswear style suggestions.

We talk often at ye olde Style Guide about pulling everything together into one cohesive, stylish outfit. Whether it be heading to the pumpkin patch or stepping out on a weekend coffee date, the chilly climes of fall — or rather, late fall — lend themselves well to layering up with the best menswear gear you’ve got.¬† And that, my friends, is where the durable, reliable and heritage-inspired chore coat comes into play. Like a lot of menswear floating around out there nowadays, it finds its roots in particularly functional, tough jackets worn decades ago by blue-collar American¬†laborers and workers. It’s a distinctive silhouette that’s retained its workwear edge — think patch front¬†pockets and a longer cut —¬†while getting some very stylish modern upgrades in the process. As a matter of fact, it just might be one of the more reliable pieces of fall outerwear you can snag — alongside the waxed trucker jacket, of course. So, that’s where we find ourselves as we tick through another style suggestion. You’ll find pieces both old and new, familiar and unfamiliar in what just might be the best — yes, the very best — way to wear a chore coat this fall.¬†And for another¬†daily dose of menswear, head to Twitter and Instagram, folks.

The Chore Coat: Apolis Indigo Wool Chore Coat — $278

A beautifully made, durable and stylish wool chore coat.

A beautifully made, durable and stylish wool chore coat.

Now, traditional chore coats were made of fabrics like denim, but the Apolis wool chore coat — a legendary piece among lovers of rugged menswear — is just as suitable of a pick.¬† You could always go with the brand’s selvage denim chore coat, but the wool option will likely be a bit heartier for chillier temps.¬†The fabric is exclusive to Apolis and the wool fabric is woven exclusively for Apolis in Italy; in short, it doesn’t get much better. With fallen buffalo horn buttons and antique nickel-reinforced rivets, this Apolis chore coat isn’t one to mess with.

The Shirt: Abercrombie & Fitch Wool Shirt — $78

A smartly done piece from Abercrombie & Fitch -- yes, that Abercrombie & Fitch.

A smartly done piece from Abercrombie & Fitch — yes, that Abercrombie & Fitch.

The recent Abercrombie & Fitch revamp¬†has really caught the attention of this writer — and it would appear that menswear designer¬†Aaron Levine, formerly of Club Monaco, is a big reason why this American heritage brand is back in business. Pieces like the Wool Shirt¬†exemplify what the brand was once about, and what the brand hopes to do in the future. It’s a simply executed, smart-looking and seasonally appropriate piece that should offset the indigo chore coat nicely, what with the textured wool fabric and a slim fit ideal for sliding underneath a jacket.

The Pants: Flint & Tinder 365 Khaki Pant — $98

A five-pocket silhouette meets a performance-ready fabric blend and American-made construction.

A five-pocket silhouette meets a performance-ready fabric blend and American-made construction.

Folks, you just might have met your new favorite pair of khaki pants. Flint & Tinder nails that middle ground between premium pieces and hard-to-obtain pricing quite nicely, and while pieces like its marled henleys are worth checking out, the 365 Khaki Pant should give you all the more reason to look into ’em. It’s a five-pocket pant in a versatile shade of dark khaki, made with 97 percent and an ever-crucial 3 percent Lyrca for stretch. The silhouette means you can team them with the Apolis¬†indigo chore coat on the weekends, or a navy blazer during the week. Not bad for under $100.

The Boots: Eastland 1955 Edition Franconia Boots — $157.50¬†(Available via East Dane)

Contrast stitching, a moc toe for durability and a fall-ready silhouette.

Contrast stitching, a moc toe for durability and a fall-ready silhouette.

When you’ve got a rugged chore coat and tough five-pocket pants, which way to go with your boot game? Easy. Reach for a boot with moc toe construction, stylish and rugged contrast stitching and a sturdy Vibram lug sole. Eye-catching rawhide laces only add to the rugged vibe of this pair of boots — in addition to this #menswear ensemble, they’re going to be a perfect fit for durable selvedge denim throughout fall and winter. As to the socks? A subtly stylish pair from Style Guide favorites American Trench might set you up just fine.

The Watch: Form-Function-Form Horween Leather Timex Chronograph — $119.98

Does it get any better -- or more affordable -- than a Timex Weekender on a Horween leather strap? Not really.

Does it get any better — or more affordable — than a Timex Weekender on a Horween leather strap? Not really.

I first stumbled onto Form-Function-Form via my buddy Joe’s fantastic menswear site, Dappered. The brand has given new meaning to finely made watch straps, and the fact that they’re sold by the great Huckberry¬†team is as good an indication of that approach as any. The adjustable length button-stud band is made from beautiful Horween leather for a suitably rugged contrast to the rich indigo chore coat and dark khaki pants. And the watch? Well, it’s a reliable, durable Timex Weekender with chronograph functionality. Snag this watch before it’s too late, yeah?

The Belt: Filson Bridle Leather Belt —¬†$75 (Available via East Dane)

If we’re sticking with rugged menswear throughout this outfit, why not grab a tough-as-nails belt that can keep up? Filson makes nothing but the highest-quality goods that money can buy, and that extends through from its coveted bags all the way down to durable — yet smaller pieces — like bridle leather belts. There’s no question that this belt fits right in with the tough vibes of this ensemble. The fact that you’ll have it forever is just another bonus.

The Hat: Club Monaco Kensington Cashmere Hat — $99 (Available via East Dane)

A rather luxurious upgrade to the standard winter hat.

A rather luxurious upgrade to the standard winter hat.

When chilly fall weather hits, you could reach for a plain, average hat — or you could reach for a cashmere Club Monaco hat. Now, it’s certainly pricey, and perhaps you’ve got a winter hat that you’ve worn through the years, but this hat is subtle, refined and very comfortable. They’re certainly aren’t a lot of cashmere stocking caps on the market, so it should be easy to hang onto this one — right?

Just as there’s something to be said for picking up affordable essentials — from style upgrades to everyday purchases — there’s something to be said for investing in the best … when you can, that is. An indigo wool chore coat from the likes of Apolis is about as durable and fall-ready as it gets, with the potential to break in over time and tell some nice stories. And when teamed with a slim wool shirt from¬†a heritage sportswear brand like Abercrombie & Fitch, you’re looking at a great one-two punch. Plus, made-in-America pants and reliable moc toe boots fit right in with the rugged vibes of fall, as does a beautiful Horween leather watch. On the accessories front, a cashmere hat is a luxurious upgrade to standard winter accessories. So, there you go. How would you wear a chore coat this fall? Any thoughts on the Apolis indigo wool chore coat? Chime in on Facebook, and we’ll see you for our weekly Friday Read.
