We’re deep into crisp fall weather here in NYC, and if that’s the case for you as well … have we got a treat for you today. Ladies and gentlemen, this week’s Style Pick of the Week makes perfect sense and fits right in with a great season for layering and rugged fall style.  And without further ado, let’s hop right into why the Todd Snyder x Champion Pocket Sweatshirt is so essential this season — and so worthy of inclusion as a Style Guide pick (wink, wink). We’ve talked about this item — and the brand — on the blog before, but you best study up.  Todd Snyder is a menswear designer who’s certainly worth knowing — and shopping, and buying — for several reasons. His gear harnesses a distinct Midwestern sensibility and classic heritage style, all the while mixing in a bit of downtown cool. That’s true for his namesake line, which does everything from soft-shouldered suiting to classic pocket T-shirts with unique style details, and it’s true for his collaborative efforts, like the fast-selling Timex x Todd Snyder Mod Watch. And the Todd Snyder x Champion collaboration gets just as many things right. Snyder draws on real-life sporting silhouettes and old-time touches to craft pieces that every guy should feasibly as in his closet. And of course, this rugged crewneck sweatshirt from Todd Snyder x Champion might just be the only sweatshirt you’ll ever need again.

A rugged essential inspired by classic sportswear and done up for the modern man.

It’s made in Canada from soft French terry using high-quality construction, and the fit is slim with room to move — and layer a slim chambray shirt, to boot. And as yours truly has written about, the Todd Snyder x Champion Pocket Sweatshirt is the type of sweatshirt that can be worn on a weekend coffee date or worn underneath a waxed chore coat. Of course, you could mix things up and pair it with a classic blue Oxford, dark denim and a navy knit tie to wear on a chilly fall day. Small details like the chest pocket on the Todd Snyder x Champion Pocket Sweatshirt add a bit of visual interest, and the heather grey fabric is versatile no matter whether you pair it with slim olive cargo pants, dark selvedge denim or navy chinos. It’s a fairly good deal for under $100, too — especially considering how much you’ll want to wear it when you realize how comfortable it is. If you already own the Todd Snyder x Champion Pocket Sweatshirt, let me know how it is in the comments. And if you’ve yet to pick one up? Best hurry over to Huckberry now — before it’s too late.

How would you wear the Todd Snyder x Champion Pocket Sweatshirt? Any thoughts on the quality?

The Friday Read: Movember, Bombas Socks and Issara Leather Goods

Editor’s note: Expect these posts once a week on Fridays — consider this a jumpstart on reading for your weekend downtime. Expect a mix of style and non-style content. For more entries, click here.

Welcome to another Friday Read, Style Guide fans — y’all are fans of this blog, right?  At any rate, we’re putting another busy work week to bed — last weekend brought with it a trip to Michigan State University, and this week brought with it a busy time at my day job representing Timberland from the PR side of the business. Needless to say, press preview season — both running one and attending several — can be quite hectic, but enjoyable. I’m looking forward to a more relaxing weekend around the city, catching up on a few #menswear photos and taking in the crisp fall weather in Brooklyn. While we’re on the topic of fall style — have you filled out your fall style wish list yet? You best get on that, because bfore we know it, the holiday season will be upon us — yes, I went there. In the meantime, we’ve got you set with fall’s best chukka boots, plus the best way to wear a flannel shirt this fall — and there’s more where that came from. In fact, we very well might — might — be covering great men’s henleys and fall travel tips on The Style Guide in the next week. Stick around for that, and stick around for the best men’s style news this week has to offer.

A fun, essential capsule collection from Richer Poorer supporting a good cause.

  • So, we’re now into the month of November — and because we like to have a little fun here on the blog, why not snag a neat pair of socks or a simple pocket tee inspired by the “Movember” movement? That’s just what the folks at Richer Poorer are doing — they’ve teamed up with the Movember Foundation to launch a capsule collection featuring a set of Movember-inspired crew socks, plus a pocket tee & boxer briefs — and the best part (other than the brand’s excellent quality) is that 75 percent of each purchase goes to the Movember Foundation.
  • If your sock drawer is in need of a seasonal refresh, it’s high time to grab a simple, crisp pair of Bombas Dress Solids  socks — for every pair sold, the brand donates a pair to homeless shelters, where socks are in high demand. And the brand has a little fun with patterns and colors, namely with the Daymond John x Bombas Sock, which pays homage to their mentor and advisor (that would be Daymond John himself), as well as the brand’s  2014 appearance on  “Shark Tank. They’re socks with a pop of color for a good cause — not too bad at all.

  • The London-based design team behind Issara is in the final days of a Kickstarter campaign for a full lineup of luxury leather goods, notably embedded with smart tracking technology. The line, which includes a clutch, a backpack, a zip wallet, a structured tote, a weekender and a slim bifold wallet, is made ethically from premium full-grain leather, to boot. Plus, each item is embedded with GPS technology from Trackr, designed to help you keep track of your goods. It’s available now for up to 60 percent off — that’s a fantastic deal, all things considered.
  • Luxury shirting maker Eton is launching another neat health and menswear-related movement this November — the brand is selling tie clips engraved with the simple phrase “I Wear The Invisible Tie,” designed to draw awareness to invisible or unspoken men’s health issues. You can pick up the tie bar and in the meantime, know that proceeds are going to charities that conduct research on everything from suicide to prostate and testicular cancer.

That’ll do it for this week’s menswear news — can’t get enough? Start here for what to wear on a weekend coffee date, and continue right on through this way for what to wear to Sunday brunch.

Oh, and swing through tomorrow for our Style Pick of the Week entry featuring a great find from the Huckberry team.

Stay stylish,

Online Shopping Picks: The Best Men’s Denim Shirts to Buy Now

Editor’s note: Get more menswear shopping picks for the season at that link.

There are some staples that never really, truly go out of style. From a rugged chambray shirt to a classic blue Oxford, these are the sort of pieces that a well-dressed guy should feasibly have in his wardrobe. And although there are a few other items you should readily have in your closet, it’s tough to dispute the timeless, rugged style of a denim shirt — yes, that’s right. Like the chambray shirt, the denim shirt is a hearty take on men’s shirting, originally worn by rough-and-tumble cowboys, ranchers and guys who needed a shirt that could take a beating. Well, modern iterations are a bit different — cut slimmer and trimmer, with more style-forward washes and detailing, for one. Yet, it’s the type of shirt that can make any guy look good — if you know which one to buy, that is. Its rugged appeal and durability makes it timeless and … you guessed it … essential. Today, we talk five great denim shirts to buy RIGHT NOW. Get more menswear at The Style Guide Facebook page and via Twitter, folks.

#1. Levi’s Barstow Western Shirt — $69.50

Made the same way as it was decades ago -- and updated with a modern fit and neat style details.

Made the same way as it was decades ago — and updated with a modern fit and neat style details.

If there’s a brand that makes a better denim shirt — or has more longevity doing it — they’ve got a tough act to follow in Levi’s. The brand still abides by the rugged ethos and construction that made its denim the pants of choice for gold miners out West, and the Barstow Western Shirt carries on that same tradition through to the 21st century. Wear this one with the Levi’s 505C to your next concert, and hang onto it the next you want a shirt to wear to the bar with friends.

#2. Scotch and Soda Denim Shirt (Available via East Dane) — $125

A minimal take on the denim shirt -- just as essential for the season.

A minimal take on the denim shirt — just as essential for the season.

While a denim shirt with a bit of a faded wash  is a reliably safe bet, you can never go wrong with a deep, dark blue denim shirt. Scotch and Soda makes pieces that are eclectic and unique in their construction and design, but this denim shirt is a winner — as with the Levi’s option above, it’s the type of shirt to wear to a rock concert, perhaps with a rugged waxed trucker jacket. And for $125, you should give it a go with a grey wool knit tie and burgundy corduroys this coming winter, too.

#3. Buck Mason Bleached Indigo Pearl Snap Shirt — $145

Made in America with classic style details -- doesn't get any better!

Made in America with classic style details — doesn’t get any better!

$145 for a shirt? Oh, yes. And here’s why — the team at Buck Mason knows a thing or two about making premium menswear in America, and this bleached indigo shirt is a fine example. Made from an 8oz. chambray fabric, it features custom-built pearl snaps and a fit that should team nicely with your favorite rugged henley this fall  and winter. The color and construction mean it also works for  layering under a suede bomber jacket on breezy days.

#4.  J. Crew Slim Midweight Denim Shirt — $88

It's tough to go wrong with J. Crew -- this denim shirt is a surefire winner.

It’s tough to go wrong with J. Crew — this denim shirt is a surefire winner.

J. Crew was (and is?) quite possibly the reason behind the surge in popularity of the classic chambray shirt over this past half-decade in menswear, and it’s no surprise that they make a heck of a denim shirt, too. This piece is slim and features a dark wash that should look just right this fall and winter with grey denim — and just as great come springtime with slim stone chinos and classic navy sneakers.

#5. Bridge and Burn Flint Overshirt — $182

A deep indigo dye and sturdy construction make this a fall and winter layering favorite.

A deep indigo dye and sturdy construction make this a fall and winter layering favorite.

So, is this overshirt your typical denim shirt? Not quite. It’s thicker, lined with cotton flannel and done up in a deep indigo wash, for one. And it doesn’t feature the  typical pearl snaps seen on most denim shirts. However,  it gets the nod here because of its versatility, durability and quality construction. The great team at Bridge & Burn puts their own touches on classic staples  (including fall’s  must-have bomber), and the Flint Overshirt is yet another example of those efforts. It’s easy to layer over a slim pocket tee, and it’ll pair up quite nicely with a stylish henley and your favorite pair of selvedge denim.

No matter how you wear it — atop a tee, under a slim cardigan or on its own with the sleeves rolled up — a tough denim shirt is your answer to rugged fall and winter style. In the right cut and with a bit of visual interest, a denim shirt can act as another casual shirting option — think of it as an alternative to your favorite chambray shirt. And it’ll work in the fall and winter, plus the spring — when worn with other seasonal style essentials, of course. Did I miss any picks? Happy shopping!
