#OOTD: What to Wear to the Beach for Guys This Summer

Who among us can pass up a trip to the beach these days? As heat waves roll across the country, it can be a nice respite to hit the surf and sand, especially as we roll into the dog days of summer. Enter today’s #OOTD, my ultimate guide on what to wear to the beach for guys this summer. We’re going much more laidback and casual than you might dress on a breezy summer weekday, so stow away one of your favorite lightweight jackets and keep things cool and easygoing. You’ll want to start your look with the basics, the fundamentals of truly getting dressed for the beach with style and utility in mind. That means going with some sustainable men’s swim trunks, specifically a pair with a throwback-inspired cut. They’re a change of pace from the everyday, and that’s not a bad thing at all.

Fear not: We’ve got plenty of the best new men’s gear along for the ride, including one of the best T-shirts for men, plus a durable and surprisingly stylish pair of dependable beach sandals, plus another crucial beach essential: Iconic and investment-worthy Steve McQueen Persol Sunglasses, which happen to have the approval of the style legend himself. These picks are going to serve you well for hours at the beach, and yet, you won’t miss a beat when you roll up to a beach bar. It helps that your United By Blue swim trunks even look a little bit like on-trend, stylish men’s shorts. Put it all together, and you’ve got the right look for a stellar day at the beach. Just be sure to pack up your Huckberry x Coors Banquet Cooler (more on that in a second) with the best beach beer for the occasion. Let’s hit the beach, folks. Cheers!

  • The Classic Swimwear: United By Blue Organic Throwback Board Shorts, $78 — What’s not to love about the sustainable men’s swim trunks on offer here from United By Blue? They’ve got a trim, throwback-inspired cut, distinctive detailing and on-point style. The brand also offers more classic boardshorts, too.
  • The Sunglasses: Steve McQueen Persol 714 Sunglasses, $480 via UNCRATE — Aside from your stylish swim trunks, a pair of the coolest sunglasses for men might be the one of the most important accessories to bring to the beach. Luckily, these Steve McQueen Persol Sunglasses, as sold by UNCRATE, fit the bill perfectly. Instantly iconic.
  • The T-Shirt: Wellen Hemp Tee, $36 — Just as important as your classic sunglasses has got to be the right T-shirt. This sustainable T-shirt is well-made, nicely priced and available in a range of versatile colorways, like the one shown here. Plus, it’s a bit more polished than a tank-top when you need a bit more coverage.
  • The Slip-On Shoes: Huckberry x Chaco Chillo “Agave” Sandals, $60 — I don’t often recommend stylish men’s sandals here on the blog, but when Huckberry and Chaco team up on functional, understated beach sandals, well, that’s as good as anything when it comes to what to wear to the beach this summer.
  • The Watch: Alsta Nautoscaph Superautomatic, $1,005 — Invest in one of the coolest watches for men on the market, and one that’s uniquely beach-ready (it’s a remastered version of the Nautoscaph Watch worn by Richard Dreyfuss in Jaws). It’s the perfect blend of style and functionality, folks.
  • The Hat: Seager Co. The Seager Boys Snapback, $30 — Wondering how to dress for the beach? Top things off with a vintage-inspired ballcap from Huckberry, the kind you can wear for years and plenty of beach trips to come.
  • The Cooler: Huckberry x Coors Banquet Cooler, $95 — Packing up for any beach trip is going to require one of the most durable, best coolers on the market. Huckberry and Coors Banquet have teamed up on a fittingly inspired, legendary partnership, so load up this cooler accordingly with your favorite beer.
  • The Bluetooth Speaker: DemerBox DB2 Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker, $349 — You’ve got your cooler loaded up with some of the best beer for summer, and all you need now are some of your favorite tunes played one of the most durable Bluetooth speakers for the beach. Don’t hit the surf and sand without it.

When you start off your beach look with a pair of the sustainable men’s swim trunks, you really can’t go wrong. With United By Blue, you’re getting both eco-conscious construction and an on-trend design, and things only get better from there as far as this #OOTD is concerned. Keep on building your look in breezy fashion with the iconic and seriously cool Steve McQueen Persol Sunglasses, as sold by UNCRATE — that pair is going to set you apart from the pack the right way. And a well-made, sustainable T-shirt is a perfectly breezy tee to wear to the beach, topped off in rugged, retro fashion with a vintage-inspired ballcap. The whole look gets even better and even more throwback-minded, if you can believe it, with one of the coolest watches for men, an instantly recognizable, investment-level watch that’ll turn heads in the best way possible.

Now that you’ve got those style staples down, including a pair of understated beach sandals, it’s time to load up one of the best coolers with perfectly crafted light lager for summer. Be sure not to forget a set of durable Bluetooth speakers to stream your favorite tunes all day long. The ideal beach day is well within reach, so use this #OOTD as your perfect guide as you plan out how to dress for the beach this summer. Once again, cheers to the season.

The Friday Read: The United By Blue End-of-Season Sale, Filson x Popeye & Men’s Grooming Essentials

United By Blue apparel

Looking towards a better future and telling you all about the United By Blue End-Of-Season Sale.

Folks, it’s been a HECK of a few weeks to start the year, has it not? It’s odd, at times, to be sitting down to write about men’s style as the Twitter doomscroll occupies the other part of my computer screen and my brain (I talk about this more in my newsletter, The Style Guide In Brief), but in the spirit of dressing better in the new year and hopefully having some fun along the way, I’m going to keep rolling right along with today’s Friday Read. Let’s start things off with a quick shoutout to one of the best ongoing men’s style sales right now: The United By Blue End-Of-Season Sale, as the headline so sagely mentions. It’s a great place to get discounts on rugged men’s gear, and I love the brand’s Responsible Flannel Shirts and really, the entire line of United By Blue men’s apparel. It also helps that the company removes a pound of trash from oceans and waterways with every product purchased. How’s that for ethical and sustainable style, ehh? Not a bad way to roll into the weekend.

Oars + Alps review

The latest Oars + Alps launch is made to refresh your grooming routine this winter, ASAP. Use the code BEAU15 to get 15 percent off.

I want to also quickly shout out another item of note, this time focused on some of the best men’s grooming essentials out there. The men’s grooming picks in question come from Chicago-based Oars + Alps, which works with NFL star DeAndre Hopkins and recently launched its Anti-Everything Pads. In short, the next time your face needs a pick-me-up as you power through another day working from home, use these exfoliating pads to freshen your skin, fight razor bumps, battler dark spots and more. Sounds like a crucial addition to your lineup of men’s grooming picks. Of course, you can use the code BEAU15 to get 15 percent off your order right now. So, with those two picks leading off your weekend, here’s the rest of the Friday Read below. Cheers, folks.

PAIGE Denim

Just two of the best new men’s style picks of the moment, all via the PAIGE Winter 2021 Menswear Collection.

HOMMEFACE men's skincare

An easy way to upgrade your skincare routine in one fell swoop.

  • I talked earlier about Oars + Alps men’s grooming (again, use the code BEAU15 to get 15 percent off your order!), but let me also mention another men’s grooming pick I’ve been loving as of late. After all, taking care of skin during the winter months is critical, and it’s all the better if you can find a do-it-all product that works in a hurry. I’m talking, of course, about the HOMMEFACE Intense Hydration Soothing Cream, which moisturizes and repairs, all at once. It’s a new favorite, and I can’t recommend it enough.

Filson x Popeye

Get your hands on this collaboration while you still can, folks.

  • Here’s another fun menswear release this week. If you follow the blog, you know that I love classic menswear at Filson, and what better way for the lauded heritage brand to bring its focus on rugged gear to the forefront than through the Filson x Popeye collaboration? Yes, that’s right: Filson x Popeye (as in, Popeye the Sailor Man!). Popeye’s the perfect sort of character to wear Filson, what with his toughness, his swashbuckling love of adventure and his time on the high seas. The brand even debuted the collaboration (featuring everything from a wool cap to a durable hoodie) with a livestream concert from Lake Washington on the Filson Instagram. It gets better, though. In fact, you should head here to read more about the history of Popeye. That’s what makes the Filson x Popeye partnership so cool, and I personally can’t get enough of it. Happy shopping, folks.

So, that’s going to bring today’s action-packed Friday Read to a close. What will you be shopping this weekend? Perhaps the Filson x Popeye has caught your eye, or else the fantastic United By Blue End-Of-Season Sale? Let me know what’s caught your eye over on Twitter or via my Instagram. In the meantime, here’s to health, safety and a weekend craft beer or two. Cheers!

An undeniably cool, rugged shirt jacket.

Now that we’ve hit fall on the calendar officially, maybe you’re starting to feel some urgency in terms of stocking up on fall style essentials for the rapidly changing season. And there’s no better way to do that than by buying one of the best men’s shirt jackets for the season, a sustainable number from Philadelphia-based United By Blue. The real kicker? It’s designed to be temperature-regulating, and features moisture-wicking and antimicrobial properties. That kind of wearability easily makes it one of the best shirt jackets to buy, and then wear all fall atop a rugged henley, a classic chambray shirt or your favorite T-shirt. Style Pick of the Week: United By Blue Holt Work Shirt

A work shirt perfect for layering, for doing yard work or for wearing around the house — nice work from United By Blue.

Ladies and gentleman, ’tis the season … to upgrade your rugged shirting game. That’s what the United By Blue Holt Work Shirt is going to do for you (or for the lucky fella who receives this stylish winter shirt under the tree in the weeks ahead). Yes indeed, it’s never too early to think about gifting for the outdoorsman in your life, and it’s certainly never too early to think about buying yourself a little extra Christmas present this season — what do ya say? For my money, the Holt Work Shirt is another standout addition to the United By Blue lineup, and a standout addition to our Style Pick of the Week series here on the blog.  United By Blue is definitely a brand we appreciate here at The Style Guide for committing to sustainability and style in equal parts (Editor’s note: Check out my United By Blue Q+A for more). That they manage to commit to the environment while running some cool retail shops — as I found in a Labor Day trip to Asbury Park — and consistently come through with cool product like the Holt Work Shirt is a treat in and of itself, too. Oh, and as to the specs and style points of the aforementioned Holt Work Shirt? It’s up there with the best men’s shirts to buy right now, I’d say.

A snapdown collar and Corozo buttons blend the functional and the refined in this work shirt.

For starters, the Holt Work Shirt features an organic cotton-recycled polyester blend, two eco-conscious fabrics that result in a tough, versatile flannel shirt. The  United By Blue Holt Work Shirt even features a touch of stretch — all the better to layer up over your favorite henley this winter season. The Holt Work Shirt has the look of an overshirt and the durability to go along with it. Plus, you’ll find space for your everyday carry thanks to two front button chest pockets on the Holt Work Shirt, complete with a useful side zip compartment at the left chest pocket. In addition to that helpful functionality, you get your pick between two versatile colorways — Rust and Olive ought to work with plenty of other winter style essentials in your rotation, from an oatmeal thermal crewneck and slim black denim to tan leather boots, dark blue denim and a classic chambray shirt (yes, I’m recommending you layer the United By Blue Holt Work Shirt  … atop another shirt). That’s the beauty of a dependable, well-made and weather-friendly work shirt — you an use it to do actual, rough-and-tumble work, or you can wear it as a statement piece underneath a classic shawl collar cardigan to grab a pint at your favorite brewpub. Where you wear the United By Blue Holt Work Shirt is up to you — choices abound. If I were you, I’d keep it simple and make that first choice — adding the Holt Work Shirt to your cart.

That’s all I’ve got today, folks — enjoy the weekend!

Windy City Style: A Summer Weekend in Chicago

Checking out The Bean and Millenium Park on an outstanding summer day in the city. Wearing an American Giant tee and my Need Supply Co. denim jacket, with hair styling courtesy of AXE. Shot by Olivia Hayhoe on an iPhone 7 Plus.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. Wasn’t I just in Chicago? This month even? Yes indeed, Style Guide readers, my travels took me to Chicago for Lollapalooza 2017 just a few short weeks ago and yet … I’m back! Or at least, I was back this past weekend for a family weekend in the Windy City.  My last trip to the city involved a healthy dose of excellent music — including a terrific live show by The Killers — and I was just as excited to be back this time. Incredibly, I’ve even got a fall trip back to Chicago planned, whereby I’ll be sure to pack plenty of fall menswear essentials. Yet, these past few days were about reconnecting with family, exploring the city and catching up with friends right before the end of summer … all in style, of course!

The rest of my family made the trek to take in Chicago’s version of the famed American musical “Hamilton” … while I gave up my seat to my young nephew (Hi, Charlie!), leaving me more time to get out and about in Chicago. That entailed a post-dinner trek to famed indie venue Metro Chicago to see a great indie pop show by Ernest Greene (known by his stage moniker Washed Out).  I’ve gotten quite practiced at loading up my stylish weekender bag with gear to take on the season, from versatile outerwear to a slim chambray shirt and classic sneakers, and this weekend proved no different. Just remember: Going from city to city still calls for on-point travel style. So, let’s get to it.

Men's travel style

Breezy essentials for summer travel, starting with my Grayers Montreaux Windbreaker and carrying through to stylish Frank and Oak leather sneakers and my reliable Huckberry Explorer’s Cap.

Heading straight to the airport in the morning on Friday called for versatile, easygoing style — just as with my last trip to Chicago. Starting with a solid base layer is always key (especially when dealing with airport A/C), so my Grayers Montreaux Windbreaker, a classically designed jacket you might recognize from my Style Pick of the Week series, was the way to go. With its light weight and easy-to-style design, the Montreaux Windbreaker teamed nicely with my equally laidback-yet-polished Mott and Bow denim shirt. Perhaps you recognize the new line of Mott and Bow denim shirts from this site’s Style Pick of the Week series, and I’d say any of the brand’s denim shirts would be a versatile bet the next time you need to throw on a crisp, casual top for travel.  The soft fabric and nicely tailored-but-mobile fit of this slim denim shirt made it an ideal airport layering move, while a new pair of Banana Republic Rapid Movement Chinos offered just the right blend of comfort and stretch.

The whole combo was topped off with my trusty-as-ever Huckberry Explorer’s Cap, a pleasingly vintage-inspired ballcap I love to throw on any time I need to keep the sun off my face.  On the footwear front, a pair of Idyllwild Pull-Up Leather Sneakers from favorite menswear retailer Frank and Oak helped me move around the city with sharp looks and wearbility in mind. And to stay on time, I threw on my trusty Timex x Red Wing Waterbury Chrono, a standout piece from the Timex Waterbury line that looks rugged and goes just about anywhere (particularly with a classic windbreaker and a stylish denim shirt). Want a winning formula for travel style? Pair mobile stretch chinos with leather sneakers and a comfortable shirt featuring textured fabric.

It’s a good thing I was prepped with versatile menswear, because Friday packed in a heck of a lot of exploration and great times around the Windy City. Our accomodations at TheWit Chicago were outstanding — right in the the heart of downtown Chicago, this modern hotel provided a sleek backdrop and stellar views from its roof bar (the ideal spot to knock back a few Bell’s beers — good to be back in the Midwest!). And Friday night’s dinner, featuring family-style pizza, cheese plates and plenty of bread and olive oil, was nothing less than excellent. The next time you get to Chicago, I’d recommend you stop by Quartino!

Mixing earthy tones and casual, versatile staples like an American Giant pima tee and Banana Republic’s Rapid Movement Chinos alongside the CLAE Bradley Mid.

And with Friday in the books, Saturday dawned with the promise of an exciting full day getting to know Chicago more. Seeing as Lollapalooza was packed wall-to-wall with music and I hadn’t visited since college, that left plenty to do — including lots of time spent strolling through MilleniuM Park. As per usual, I prepped with the best men’s gear that I could possibly muster, including a mix of high-low, casual style led by a crisp charcoal pair of my Banana Republic Rapid Movement Chinos. Seriously, if there’s a pair of chinos that combines better range of movement or a more crisp look — the tab closure waist helps with that — I’ve yet to find ’em.  My charcoal chinos matched up nicely with a well-made, breathable Amerian Giant Premium Crew Tee in Drab Olive — a nice contrast of earthy tones that worked well to go from Millenium Park to cool spots like Raised, an urban rooftop spot outfitted with industrial fixtures, premium cocktails and local craft beer.

Saturday’s full ensemble for exploring Millenium Park, highlighted by my CLAE Bradley Mid Sneakers, plus my trusty Need Supply Co. denim jacket and the TImex x Todd Snyder Military Watch.

Like other American-made menswear that I favor, I think you’ll find a simple, stylish T-shirt works with anything on vacation.  The key to a versatile look came from my  Need Supply Co. Denim Jacket in 96, another piece that proved a favorite at Lollapalooza 2017   — it worked just as well this time around, especially as a shot of color to contrast my rich Cocoa Leather Bradley Mid Sneakers from CLAE. This style is comfortable and durable, and for this late August trip, that made them a prime footwear pick. That comfort definitely helped me get around in style — my MVMT Watches Runaway Aviators also helped shield my eyes from the hot Chicago sun, and we took the chance to keep the afternoon rolling. The Chicago Athletic Association Hotel, completely refurbished and recently reopened, harkens back to the city’s glamour and refinement of years gone by. It comes complete with a rotating pop-up bar on the ground floor, plus a game room and  a neat rooftop bar with great lakefront views.

A stylish weekender bag, American Giant shorts and a breezy chambray shirt made for easy travel style.

But as always seems to be the case, the weekend drew to a close too quickly. I had just enough time for a delicious Sunday brunch at the uniquely ’70s-inspied HopCat Chicago lounge before departing the Windy City yet again — and I dressed in casual, breezy travel style to take on the day. For a bit of tailored style mixed with supreme comfort, my all-new American Giant Weekend Shorts — made from hefty rugby jersey cotton — were perfect for a flight back to NYC. And to mix in some high-low style, I threw on my trusty United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt. What with breathable fabric and a neat pattern, the Wenlock Chambray Shirt added some contrast to my laidback CLAE Hayward Sneakers, at once retro and yet crisply modern. And on the accessories front, a handy travel kit and men’s grooming essentials from Baxter of California paired up perfectly together, while my rugged-yet-accessible Timex Waterbury Chrono Diver helped me stay on time in casual style. In all, the laidback, breezy style ensemble helped me make it back to NYC in good time and in good style.

I hope you spent your weekend in the same way I did — with great friends and family, enjoying great times. You can  be sure I’m already looking forward to my next trip — to Chicago or elsewhere. To keep up with my travels and my style tips, check out my Instagram. And tomorrow, you can join us for another #OOTD. Until then, stay stylish!

#OOTD: How to Dress for the Fourth of July This Year

It’s tough to believe it, but it’s here — the Fourth of July, that is. It’s a bit of an oddly timed holiday this year, falling on a Tuesday and all. But rest assured, your Style Guide team of one has still got some prime #menswear for you to check out, purchase and wear this year.  I’ll be looking forward to a day spent hanging out around Brooklyn — and perhaps a trip to Coney Island. If you’ve got similar plans on the books (be it a day at the beach or a backyard barbeque), I’m willing to bet that you’re going to want to dress in laidback, casual summer style. That’s why we’re using this opportunity to pull together a lot of sesasonal essentials you likely already have in your closet. From a slim pair of chino shorts to a stylish chambray shirt and classic summer sneakers, dressing in style for the Fourth of July really has never been easier. It’s all about finding the proper fit, sharp colors and mobile, versatile style — no matter where  the day takes you. I’d love to hear how you’ll be celebrating the day and what you think of the following list of summer style essentials — shoot me a quick Tweet on Twitter, if you so please.  And follow me on Instagram to see how I’m styling my gear leading up to and on the holiday.

Florsheim

Taking style staples you’ve already got in your closet, pulled together in one casual, laidback and good-looking ensemble.

The Shirt: United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt, $68 — Peruse the pages of this site much? Surely, you recognize the United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt from our Style Pick of the Week series — with a cool pattern and breezy fabric, it looks better than a plain T-shirt for the day.

Greats

The Sweatshirt: Flint and Tinder Pocket Pullover, $78 — Because it’s liable to get breezy in the evening, you need an American-made pullover from Flint and Tinder — it’s anything but your average sloppy hoodie.
The Shorts: Finisterre Coverack Shorts, $72.98 — Casual, slim chino shorts are the perfect move here — especially ones made in a versatile color and hard-wearing fabric. First seen in our guide to the best shorts f0r summer.
 Frank And Oak
The Sneakers: SeaVees Legend Standard, $78 — Whether you’re manning the grill, strolling the boardwalk or hanging out with friends around a campfire, breezy, stylish summer sneakers from SeaVees are much-needed.
The Socks: Arvin Goods No-show Socks (Three-pack), $30 — With casual summer sneakers on your feet, durable no-show socks remain a must. Arvin Goods is, quite simply, the brand to buy.

Nautica

The Holiday Essential: Bespoke Post Chill Box, $55  – Yes indeed, I’m calling the Bespoke Post Chill Box a holiday essential — crucially, the Chill Box comes with a durable Hudson Sutler Cooler Bag and two portable pils glasses. Nothing better.

The Hat: Huckberry Explorer’s Cap, $39.98 — Available in a plethora of color options, the well-made, easy-to-wear and American-made Huckberry Explorer’s Cap is the perfect hat to throw on your noggin in the sun.

Ben Sherman

The Watch: Timex Archive Waterbury United 38mm Watch, $110 — Last but certainly not least, a durable, handsomely crafted and vintage-inspired timepiece is just the right way to accent this casual get-up. Just don’t spill any beer on it, ehh?

With that stylish Timex watch, we’ve put the capper on our latest #OOTD. Do you know what you’ll be wearing for the Fourth of July? I’ll be dressed in much the same way, and looking forward to an easygoing afternoon with friends — dressed to grill out, of course. Similarly stylish gear will serve you well no matter where you go. Critically, the  United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt  personifies wining summer style to a T, while  slim chino shorts from Finisterre should round out your ensemble nicely. Any time you get the chance to pick up  Flint and Tinder gear — like the Pocket Pullover seen above — you should take it. I’d wager that F&T pullover will be perfect for many a summer evening. Throw on some durable no-show socks and classic SeaVees sneakers, too — and you certainly shouldn’t forget the thirst-quenching Bespoke Post Chill Box to keep your guests happy. All set and ready to go? Before you hit the road, be sure to do so with a stylish leather weekender in tow.

Those are all the tips I’ve got in my bag of tricks today, folks. Thanks for reading!

If you need an upgrade in that department, we’ll get you sorted out in no time today. And if you start by taking a look at your swimwear, you’ll be set when it comes to what to wear to the beach this summer. Although there are many iterations — from thigh-baring numbers to longer board shorts — we’re focusing on picks that generally hit the sweet spot today. Crucially, feel free to inject a bit of color and pattern into your ensemble. Reach for a stylish summer shirt that can go from beach to boardwalk — like the Criquet Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt — and perhaps slip on a pair of SeaVees sneakers to top it all off. #1. Finisterre Talland Beach Short — $84.98

Finisterre

Retro-leaning stripes, a clean fit and sharp style — perfect for summer.

Yes indeed, the brand that makes your favorite pair of chinos can make a heck of a pair of swim trunks, as well. Finisterre focuses on functionality merged with just a bit of fashion-forward edge — that’s what makes the colorful, striped Talland Beach Shorts a worthy (and premium) pick-up. You get retro style without veering into full-on lifeguard territory and you get the added benefits of quick-drying, UV-resistant functionality. Snap up the Talland Beach Shorts before your next beach trip, will ya?

Oxfords under $50 CAD_728x90

#2. Bather Trunk Co. Surf Trunk — $69.98

Bather Trunk Co.

An eye-popping print and unique, quick-drying fabric are but two positive design features on these trunks.

Let’s keep the color and pattern going here with the Bather Trunk Co. Surf Trunk  an ideal addition to your summer swimwear rotation. For quite the solid price, you get a pair of swim trunks that are anything but ordinary. With a 6.5-inch inseam — a length nearly mimics the cut of most chino shorts — you’re looking at easygoing style that’ll stand out on a beach full of black, knee-length swimsuits. The waxed cotton drawstring and quick-drying polyester shell are also upgrades over your standard pair of swim trunks — not too shabby.

#3. United By Blue Stillwater Boardshorts — $68

United By Blue

A different-than-expected pattern and cool, easygoing four-way stretch.

If you want swim trunks with a longer cut and yet a tailored fit and eye-catching style, United By Blue is the place to go — and the Stillwater Boardshorts are the trunks to buy. Particularly useful if you’re catching some waves or doing a bit of waterfall hiking (or poolside beer-sipping), the pattern is one-of-a-kind and the material is injected with four-way stretch for easy wear. Plus, every purchase of the Stillwater Boardshorts helps remove one pound of trash from oceans and waterways — what gets better than that?

Greats

#4. Birdwell Beach Britches for Todd Snyder 311 Boardshorts — $138

A recent collab from a great American menswear designer and a great American menswear brand.

Leave it to Mr. Todd Snyder to knock it out of the park when it comes to everything from suits to stylish pocket tees to … well, swimwear. The designer’s recent collaboration with heritage California surf brand Birdwell Beach Britches takes a classic, hand-stitched silhouette and updates with New York-centric colorways. That means they’ll work at every pool or beach this summer — you can even wear them to your next summer BBQ. Trust me — I took mine on a Memorial Day weekend trip to Florida, and loved ’em.

#5. Mack Weldon Board Shorts — $98

Mack Weldon

With stretchy fabric, quality materials and the brand’s attention to fit and quality, these new board shorts are a must-buy.

First, Mack Weldon conquered your underwear drawer. Then, they started producing stylish, slim merino T-shirts and other great basics. After that, it was the Mack Weldon Vesper Polo. And now, they’ve just introduced functional, well-fitting and well-made swimwear into their rotation. Made with a quick-drying fabric and available in neat, versatile colors (I’d recommend the Total Eclipse Blue), they should provide tailored beach style for months to come.

If I were you, I’d make sure I got my summer swimwear game sorted out ASAP — and I hope the picks on this list do prove helpful in that regard. From the retro striped pattern and bold color of the Talland Beach Shorts to the eye-catching sensibility of the Stillwater Boardshorts and the cool, versatile pattern on the Bather Trunk Co. Surf Trunk , I’d  bet you’ll be the best-dressed guy on the beach (particularly if throw on something as wearable as a slim chambray shirt with your trunks. Picks from Todd Snyder and Mack Weldon are also nothing to sneeze at — with neutral colorways and reliable fits, those are two premium swimsuits worth buying. What are your must-haves for the beach this year? And which pair of the above stylish swim trunks will you be picking up?

Let me know over on Twitter. Until then — thanks for reading!

Hitting the Beach: A Memorial Day Weekend in Florida

Equal parts preppy, classic and laidback. Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt by Criquet Shirts. Surf n’ Turf Hybrid Shorts by Volcom. Leadbelly Sunglasses by Electric. Bransen Dive Watch by CHAPS. Shot on an iPhone 7 Plus.

As the week dawned rainy and a bit chilly in NYC,  my mind turned immediately toward sunny Florida –I knew I needed a vacation. And that’s just what I got, as I spent these past few days celebrating Memorial Day weekend in style. I always relish the chance to hop a quick flight south to my parents’ adopted home of Fort Myers, that much is true.  Close to pristine beaches and blue water, near to a great craft beer brewery or two, and surrounded by great times, close friends and family and a hearty helping of gourmet home cooking — it’s always a treat! Of course, if you follow me on Instagram, you’re familiar with my visits. And if not? Settle in for a few tips on men’s travel style from my trip. I last trekked down to Florida with my favorite #menswear during a Style Guide spring break visit this past March, and that came not long after I celebrated Christmas in style in Fort Myers. That being said, it never gets old ditching rugged spring outerwear for a bit of much-needed sun! And as always, this trip put my packing mettle to the test.

From NYC to Fort Myers, menswear in tow. Trucker Jacket by Levi’s. Striped Pocket Tee and Cropped Stretch Cotton Chinos by JACHS NY. SYD Leather Watch by Nautica. Havana Sunglasses by Component. Nylite Sneakers by Abercrombie & Fitch x Tretorn. Brass bottle opener and Flight Brief by Owen and Fred. Fillmore Headphones by LSTN Sound Co. Explorer’s Cap by Huckberry.

My last major trip took me to Pittsburgh to see Local Natives — needless to say, conditions were a little bit different (in a great way!), as I hopped a quick flight to Fort Myers. To take on a breezy NYC day and travel thereafter, my Levi’s Trucker Jacket in a seasonally friendly light wash was an easy-to-wear outer layer — and it was just as easy to cram into my trusty Owen and Fred Voyager Waxed Weekender when getting off the plane in Fort Myers. Thanks to my casual office dress code, I was able to sneak in two great pieces from my pals at JACHS NY — the breathable, comfortable Striped Pocket Tee and sharp Red Cropped Stretch Cotton Chinos, featuring a single pleat for modern style. Be on the lookout for similarly easygoing pieces for your next jaunt to a warm-weather locale — and perhaps bring along your own pair of the Abercrombie & Fitch x Tretorn Nylite Sneakers, as I did. When teamed up with my rugged-yet-crisp Nautica SYD Leather Date Watch and my reliable Huckberry Explorer’s Cap, the combo worked for the plane ride … and then grabbing a Corona shortly after arrival.

Beach essentials for a sunny Florida day. T-shirt by Flint and Tinder. 311 Boardshorts by Birdwell Beach Britches for Todd Snyder. Calypso Watch by MVMT Watches. Legend Sneakers by SeaVees. Sunglasses by Component. Pomade by Fatboy Hair.

As it so turns out, Friday was a bright, beautiful and sunny day in Florida — the absolute perfect day to hit the beach and kick off a mini-vacation. No matter where your travels take you, you should start the day with men’s grooming essentials — as it were, I styled my ‘do for the day with the clean and sharp Sea Salt Pomade from Brooklyn’s own Fatboy Hair. And on the apparel front: Simple style always starts with the basics — like a stylish Flint and Tinder T-shirt, made in America with marled fabric. It was a classic complement to my new favorite pair of swim trunks, the beach-ready 311 Boardshorts from the excellent Birdwell Beach Britches for Todd Snyder collaboration.

Oxfords under $50 CAD_120x90

Stylish beach gear (Corona not included) from the Birdwell Beach Britches for Todd Snyder collaboration and my new Component sunglasses. Shot on an iPhone 7 Plus.

And it wouldn’t be a day of exploration without my Legend Sneakers from the fine folks at SeaVees — effortless style finely accented by the durable, handsome and functional MVMT Watches Calypso Watch.  And for kicking back on the beach, I needed a few more items. Step one: Enter the stylish headphones via the Vibes Box from Bespoke Post. Step two: Enter my wearable and sharp Component sunglasses . The next time you head to the beach, don’t leave behind your stylish beach gear. And with a day of beach-going and pool relaxation in the books, it was time for a classic Hayhoe family cookout. I’d tell you all about my dad’s ribs, but that recipe is a secret!

Functional picks that mix the preppy — my Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt — with the utilitarian (my Volcom Surf n’ Turf Hybrid Shorts). Reazer Drive Loafers by Clarks. Leadbelly Sunglasses by Electric. Bransen Diver by CHAPS.

Of course, no trip to Florida would be complete without a Saturday trip to Fort Myers Beach — teamed with seasonal style that fit right in, of coruse. In this instance, that meant my new Volcom Surf n’ Turf Hybrid Shorts were a comfortable, transitional style move — able to move seamlessly from water to land thanks to quick-drying technology. The tailored fit also nicely complemented my slim, tailored and classic Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt in a crisp shade of white. You might recognize the Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt from a recent Style Pick of the Week entry — I can vouch that it performed admirably in the heat as I soaked up the sun and sipped a few Coronas.
Sutro Shoes Inc.
And the next time you want to inject a bit of continental style into a polo-and-shorts combo, take the Clarks Reazor Drive Loafer in a bright shade of Blue Nubuck — mine proved quite comfortable and very easy to slip on and off. And when matched up with stylish accessories (specifically, the Electric Leadbelly Sunglasses and the well-priced CHAPS Bransen Diver, courtesy of the brand), I was more than set for a full day of exploration in the Florida sun. A dive watch and versatile shades will work anywhere you travel this summer — especially Florida.

Greats

Gear that doesn’t compromise style in the heat. Wenlock Chambray Shirt by United by Blue. Linen trousers by Bridge and Burn. Penny loafers by Sebago. SYD Leather Watch by Nautica. Brass bottle opener by Owen and Fred. Sunglasses by Component. Pencil by Delfonics.

It should come as no surprise that a day of rest and relaxation — along with another backyard BBQ — was in order on Sunday following two busy days in the sun. I still took on the heat in style though, starting with my slim-fitting and uniquely designed United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt. You might recognize this United By Blue summer essential from my Style Pick of the Week series — with a tailored fit, soft fabric and a cool pattern, the Wenlock Chambray Shirt proved a Florida winner. Particularly when matched up with my cotton-linen blend Bridge and Burn Roark Olive Trousers, I stayed quite cool in the sun. Getting around was also made easier thanks once again to my Component sunglasses, mixing vintage inspiration and a modern edge. I was pleased once again with the tough functionality of my Nautica SYD Leather Date Watch, and I injected a bit of dressy detailing into the ensemble with the Sebago Legacy Penny Loafers in a head-turning shade of red leather. Look for similar day-to-night, transitional pieces the next time you’re searching for a full-day, warm-weather outfit.

Plenty of #menswear to pack into my Owen and Fred Voyager Waxed Weekender, from my Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt to my Ministry of Supply Going Places Shorts. Waterbury Chronograph by Timex. Sneakers by Gola. Leadbelly Sunglasses by Electric. Steno Book by Field Notes Brand.

Monday so far promises a full day of Florida relaxation — and a crucial day off work — before heading back to NYC. I brought more on-point gear to fight off the heat, starting with another Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt — the organic cotton  of the Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt is breathable and comfortable. My Ministry of Supply Going Places Shorts also do a fine job at wicking sweat in a tailored silhouette. And my Gola Classics Comet Plimsoll Trainers add a dash of sporty style to this classic look. Of course, my durable and rugged Timex Waterbury Chronograph (in a cool matte black) has so far paired up nicely with my Electric Leadbelly Sunglasses for one last day in the Florida sun.

Looking back on this weekend, it absolutely brought with it everything I had hoped for — relaxing beach time, some much-needed sand and sun (as always), and plenty of meaningful time with family. In the hustle and bustle of New York City (and in the hustle and bustle of planning for these trips!), life can sometimes fly by very quickly, and yet … this weekend was simply the ideal way to kick off summer. I hope you experienced much of the same on your end this weekend. Know that there’s plenty more travel and plenty more menswear to come on The Style Guide, including a look tomorrow at what to wear to a music festival.

Thanks, as always, for reading!

#OOTD: The New Chambray Shirt to Wear This Season

Join us today for another entry in the #OOTD series. If you want to know all about the new chambray shirt to wear this season … it’s your lucky day. From upgrading your pocket tee to wearing a patterned shirt the right way, we’ve certainly covered a lot of ground in all matters spring style — and we’re continuing to do so today, with both sustainability and great looks in mind. Indeed, in the same way that a chambray shirt can work handsomely with a rugged shawl-collar cardigan in winter or a waxed trucker jacket in the fall,  so too can it work in the spring — namely, with a little less fabric in the sleeves. That’s where the United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt comes into play. You might recognize it from a recent Style Pick of the Week entry, and it’s taking center stage now (it’s also been a hot seller via Huckberry, so I’d look to slim short-sleeve chambray shirting from Old Navy to replicate this look). That being said, let’s get to the most important part — your purchase of this shirt helps remove a pound of trash from oceans and waterways, part of the brand’s commitment to the environment. And why should you buy it? Plenty o’ reasons. It features a neat mini-plus sign pattern — just eye-catching enough — and a reliably tailored fit (no baggy shirts — who’s with me?). Both of those features make it perfect for everything from exploring Brooklyn to heading out on a weekend coffee date — and it also can team up with slim tan chinos and a pair of stylish men’s dress shoes for  summer half-day at the office (and happy hour afterward). Alright, so that’s the shirt to wear this season — but what to wear it with? Stick around for the below #OOTD. Stay stylish!

Pairing a cool chambray shirt with slim five-pocket pants, a lightweight bomber and simple sneakers — not bad at all.

The Shirt: United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt, $68 — See, we told you this shirt would look great — right? It’s the ideal way to start a spring style ensemble — slim, unique and ready for just about anything.

The Jacket: Public Rec Apparel Crosstown Bomber, $129 — For those spring and summer evenings when it gets a bit breezy, the Public Rec Apparel Crosstown Bomber is the perfect weight and the perfect silhouette.

The Pants: Flint and Tinder 365 Pant in Earth, $98 — Are you sick of hearing about Flint and Tinder yet? Not quite? Good. The Flint and Tinder 365 Pant in Earth should prove tough, versatile and perfect for situations casual and slightly dressier — particularly alongside the United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt.

The Sneakers: Dr. Scholl’s Rythms Sneaker in Grey Nubuck, $89.99 — For a bit of monochromatic style up against the Public Rec Apparel Crosstown Bomber, reach for affordable, crisp and classic grey sneakers.

The Socks: Darn Tough No Show Ultra-Light Cushion Socks, $29.98 — Because every pair of stylish spring sneakers deserves great socks, get this two-pack of tough (literally) no-show socks.

The Watch: Jack Mason Aviator 3-Hand Watch, $205 —  Tough, rugged and yet refined at the same time, the Jack Mason Aviator 3-Hand Watch is your answer to that age-old question: “What watch do I wear with this outfit?”
Greats
The Sunglasses: Norton Point Charlie 014 Sunglasses, $145 — Blending retro style with a decent price and great quality, the Norton Point Charlie 014 Sunglasses are a great pick-up in advance of summer — truly.

The Everyday Necessity: Nisolo Lori Leather Tote, $134.98 — More than $130 for a leather tote? Well, when it’s an extraordinarily high-quality bag that looks smart alongside your everyday carry, you should give it a shot.
Sutro Shoes Inc.

OK — all ready to wear your new favorite chambray shirt for spring and summer? Of course you are. The building blocks of this outfit are essentials every guy should have in his closet — the United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt is just the beginning. It should look right at home alongside a versatile pair of pants like the Flint and Tinder 365 Pant in Earth. And simple grey sneakers are a nice complement to a casual spring jacket — the Public Rec Apparel Crosstown Bomber is the jacket you need now. Make no mistake, on-point accessories are also clutch — the Norton Point Charlie 014 Sunglasses could be your new go-to pair of shades, while the Nisolo Lori Leather Tote is a reliable and simple way to carry around your goods. All set for this season’s adventures? I know I am!

As always — stay stylish,

Style Suggestion: How to Dress for Cinco de Mayo

Sidle up to the bar, folks! It’s time for a little Cinco de Mayo celebration — and the requisite #menswear to go with it, of course. Yes, the holiday to commemorate the Mexican Army’s victory in the Battle of Puebla has turned into quite the occasion here in the U.S. (for better or worse). Seeing as it’s as great a time as any to hit up your first spring bar crawl, you might as well look stylish while doing it — right? We’re offering up picks today that harness the best of spring style — essential chino shorts, a versatile short-sleeve shirt and SeaVees slip-on sneakers that can go just about anywhere.  Just as with dressing for spring break or dressing for a road trip, the winning formula lies in upgrading your basic pieces and nailing the fit just right. Oh, and enjoying yourself along the way — that’s what it’s all about. Kick back, enjoy a Corona or a Tecate for me, and scroll through the below #menswear picks. Got any feedback for me? Hit me up over on Twitter. Bottoms up!

The Shirt: United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt — $68

United By Blue

Style that goes toward a good cause and looks excellent for Cinco de Mayo and beyond.

For style that’s at once more put-together than a T-shirt and yet more casual than your standard classic Oxford or dress shirt, reach for a slim chambray shirt — preferably the United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt. Made with sustainability in mind — your purchase helps the brand remove one pound of trash from oceans and waterways — the mini-plus sign print is visually interesting, while the unique lighter blue color is a spring-appropriate style move. Yes indeed, this shirt is made for a few patio brews.

The  Shorts: Katin Patio Shorts — $49.98

Katin

Your go-to shorts for having a few spring brews — especially on Cinco de Mayo.

The prime function of the Katin Patio Shorts is … practically in the product title itself. They’re made for spring and summer patio evenings galore. And they’re a heck of a steal for under $50 — just the shorts you need to wear for spring and summer, what with a versatile khaki color and a clean fit. Add in the drawstring waist and you’ve got a bit of hidden comfort — ideal for moving from bar to bar or manning the grill. Again, it’s tough to top that combination of price and solid looks.

The Sneakers: SeaVees Huntington Middie — $84.98

SeaVees

A sneaker that blends the ease of a slip-on with the style of a canvas lace-up.

See, told ya we’d be recommending some SeaVees slip-on sneakers for the occasion, did I not? The  SeaVees Huntington Middie is a unique option that’s A) Ideal for spring and B) Pleasingly versatile thanks to its slip-on construction and chukka-like cut. In short, it’s both perfect for beach trips and boardwalk strolls, along with a little Cinco de Mayo party action. The SeaVees Huntington Middie is definitely an upgrade over flip-flops, and you can wear ’em all summer long.

The Socks: Darn Tough No Show Ultra-Light Cushion Socks –$29.98

Darn Tough No-Show Socks

Simple no-show socks that blend comfort with practicality.

Slip-on sneakers still call for no-show socks that provide comfort for your feet and extend the life of your footwear — agreed? And Darn Tough makes some of the best out there; sure, it’s just a hair under $30 for a two-pack, but these are a weather-appropriate way to upgrade your sock game — no white tube socks and sneakers now, ya hear?

The Watch: Szanto Military Field Watch — $150

Szanto Military Field Watch

A watch that can stand up to a little sun and maybe even a spilled drink.

A military field watch for Cinco de Mayo? Absolutely. When the name of the game is hopping from party to party or bar to bar, whether you imbibe or not, it’s still a good idea to step out in casual style that channels rugged vibes. That is to say: Leave the heirloom watch at home this go-round. Luckily for you, the Szanto Military Field Watch is clean and simple, with understated, casual style to match. The price ain’t half-bad, either — pick up my tab, will ya?
Sutro Shoes Inc.

The Sunglasses: Raen Optics Wiley Sunglasses — $135

Raen Optics

Sunglasses that blend retro style and casual vibes — just what the doctor ordered for your next bar crawl.

If you’ve got the basics of this outfit handled, it’s OK to go a little more retro-inspired, or head-turning, with your accessories. The Wiley Sunglasses from Raen Optics are but one way to do this — they call to mind the sort of shades McQueen might have worn, with a more affordable price tag. And they’re a nice way to fit in with a casual chambray shirt and laidback shorts — these aren’t your average athletic sunglasses, nor are they a cheaper grocery store version. Just right.
Florsheim

The Hat: Huckberry Explorer’s Cap — $39.98

Huckberry Explorer's Cap

Vintage style that’s easily wearable and functional at the same time.

No one said it’d be all fun and games on Cinco de Mayo, right? There’s also the chance to catch a nasty sunburn after hours in the heat. So, the Huckberry Explorer’s Cap is going to keep the sun off your face, and do so in style. There’s no athletic logo in sight here — just a vintage-inspired ballcap that’s easily wearable with the basics, including a stylish chambray shirt. Wear it now, wear it on your next road trip and don’t forget to pack it with your stylish beach gear this summer.

The Bag: Billykirk Simple Tote — $184.98

Billykirk

A smart move that should prove quite useful and durable through this bar crawl and beyond.

If you’re questioning the necessity of lugging a bag to a bar crawl or party, well … where are you going to put your phone charger, and your bottle opener, and that six-pack? Answer: The Billykirk Simple Tote . Handsome, built to age well and last through plenty of seasonal adventures, and a heck of a casual bag to complement this ensemble. It avoids the cumbersome straps of a backpack, and yet it’s smaller and easier to carry when compared to a piece like the Bradley Mountain Utility Bag.
NORDSTROM.com

OK, y’all — who’s ready for Cinco de Mayo? This guy is. Casual, off-duty style can be simple and quite fun, particularly if you start with a shirt that’s at once polished and laidback — enter the United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt. And you’d do well to complement said shirt with equally laidback, wearable shorts; in this instance, the Katin Patio Shorts should have you all set for the day ahead. And crisp slip-on sneakers in a clean shade of white are an essential style move — enter the SeaVees Huntington Middie into your rotation. Practical touches, from stylish sunglasses to a vintage-inspired ballcap and a durable Billykirk tote are also must-have, especially if you’re hopping around town for hours at a time. And again, the key here comes down to nailing the fit and colors — and enjoying the day responsibly, of course. What are your Cinco de Mayo plans? Hopefully, they involve a few Coronas and a lot of fun.
Thanks so much for reading — enjoy!
