#OOTD: How to Wear a Denim Shirt Every Summer Weekend (Including This One)

Perhaps, there’s one question that pops up in the front of your mind consistently: What men’s style essentials am I going to wear this summer weekend? Seeing as the calendar is moving ever-closer toward Memorial Day this weekend — and then quickly beyond that — there are plenty of seasonal adventures to be had (here’s a specific idea for what to wear for Memorial Day, too). But again, how are you going to dress for the demands of a summer weekend? Be it a weekend trip away, a backyard BBQ,  casual pre-dinner cocktails with friends, or a day out in the country before driving back to the city … there are a lot of options as to how you can customize your summer. And folks, today’s #OOTD — featuring the best denim shirt on the market — is guaranteed to prove ever-ready for each opportunity. It’s blending the best of casual and crisp style (take the classic white tee shown below) with just enough functionality (a la the comfortable retro sneakers on display). We’re also accessorizing with classic menswear pieces that can work all season long, including a tough stainless steel dive watch and a handy craft beer growler. To me, these are the kind of essentials that exude “casual cool” — not too stuffy, not too sloppy … just right. Raise a glass, crack open a can of your favorite beverage … and then, let’s welcome summer.

  • The Shorts: Topo Designs Global Shorts, $59 — Since it’s a casual, early spring weekend, comfortable, DWR-treated nylon shorts should provide plenty of versatility. They’ll work for day hikes, backyard football or manning the grill … and you might even be able to get away with wearing them to a patio dinner.

All things considered, do you feel ready for summer now? The versatility of a classic Western shirt is going to set you apart from the pack, whether strolling through the park, grabbing a cup of coffee or enjoying your favorite craft beer — it’s a seriously cool shirt, simple as that. And when layered up over a classic white pocket tee, you’re channeling a bit of retro style inspiration — as perfect as it gets for summer. The Topo Designs Global Shorts, while a bit more functional than classic men’s shorts, are still a reliable option thanks to the tailored cut and neutral color (and if you happen to head out on a quick hike or a long beach walk, no need to change shorts).

In terms of versatility, you really can’t top a tough stainless steel dive watch, no matter where you go this summer. Throwback-inspired sneakers are a unique update on the footwear front, more classic than espadrilles or sandals — and it helps out that you’re topping this outfit off with some Steve McQueen-esque shades.  Before you run out the door to that rooftop party, grab two essentials sure to make you the life of the party: A craft beer growler, along with a stylish Bluetooth portable speaker from Cavalier Audio. Your outfit is unstoppable, your accessories are one-of-a-kind … and your summer weekend just got a whole lot better. Have any summer style must-haves? Let me know on Twitter!

#OOTD: How to Wear Your New Favorite Denim Shirt for Winter

The new year, as we’ve been discussing these past few weeks on The Style Guide, calls for continual reflection and, naturally, the best men’s style essentials you can get your hands on. Like the rugged denim shirt from Billy Reid that happens to be the focus of today’s #OOTD.  Now, we’ve previously talked about how to wear a denim shirt for winter, so consider this a bit of a refresher in terms of casual style — this is the type of layered look that would even fly at the office on a casual winter Friday. The Billy Reid Denim Shirt in question is helped along by a stylish long-sleeve shirt from the good folks at Faherty Brand, plus slim chinos and, as ever, classic leather boots.

Your outerwear (*ahem the Flint and Tinder Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker) should also blend functionality and style for the winter — the prevailing thought behind this #OOTD is dependable style that works all week and all weekend. Pieces like a handsome leather watch from Martenero help cement the go-anywhere versatility of this look, too. Really, it’s all about finding new ways to wear pieces you already own — it’s a fun way to shake up your routine in the morning, and you might even find yourself trying some layering tricks you wouldn’t normally go for otherwise. So, with all that being said, it’s time to get down to business. Let me know what you think of this #OOTD over on Twitter. Thanks for reading!

Dependable, functional layers make this #OOTD a winter winner (say that five times fast).

Now, hopefully, we’ve given you something to think about as you upgrade your wardrobe and refresh your style for 2019. When you start things off with a classic denim shirt, the potential really is limitless in terms of versatility. In this case, we’re layering that Billy Reid Denim Shirt  with a stylish long-sleeve tee from Faherty Brand — just the right way to dress for a weekend stroll, a morning coffee date or a casual afternoon at home. Things are amped up just a bit with maybe, just maybe, the perfect slim chinos; that combo is perfect for work or play. Again, classic leather boots add sleek appeal and timeless style, as does a classic everyday watch from Martenero (quite possibly your new favorite watch, agreed?). No outfit would be complete without a tough winter jacket — enter a rugged waxed trucker jacket from Flint and Tinder, then get ready to field all kinds of complements about how great you look (seriously!). And as we always say, you can’t let your accessories fall by the wayside, hence the use of stylish socks from American Trench and a dependable leather belt from Levi’s. To round things out, go for the perfect blend of functionality and timeless style with a stylish backpack from the good folks at Filson. That’s really all there is to it. Well, not quite. But I’d encourage you to try some of these pieces on for size, then catch up with me on Instagram to see how I’m getting dressed this winter.

#OOTD: How to Wear a Denim Shirt for Fall and Winter

Alright, I’ll come right out and say it — you need a stylish denim shirt in your fall and winter wardrobe, and you need one now. The denim shirt seen here is the type of smart, casual, versatile shirting option that every guy (including you!) can use, in any season — but especially when it gets cold. And what’s more, the rugged denim shirt featured in this #OOTD from Billy Reid is the sort of shirt that can be worn plenty of ways this fall and winter (not to mention spring and summer). Mind you, it’s not just any casual shirt we’re talking today — it’s none other than the Billy Reid Denim Shirt, a seriously cool, made-in-America style staple. With unique texture and a bright blue color, this particular denim shirt is one that teams readily with the picks you see below (including a rugged henley) just as easily as it teams with more dressed-up style staples, like a charcoal herringbone blazer. The denim shirt is, simply put, the right way to add edge to casual outfits, and the right way to inject a bit of cool into tailored looks.  As I’ve mentioned, the Billy Reid Denim Shirt just goes with … anything, including the adventure-ready, casual weekend (or weekday!) look seen below. Versatile pants? You bet. A classic fall jacket? Yes. And stylish weatherproof boots? This #OOTD really does have it all. How would you wear it? Let me know on Twitter

Your new favorite denim shirt, no questions asked. Right?

  • The Denim Shirt: Billy Reid Denim Shirt, $195  — Billy Reid continues to deliver with this richly crafted, made-in-the-States denim shirt. A fall and winter style staple.
  • The Essential Fall Jacket: Howler Brothers Merlin Jacket, $195 — With technical roots and style that fits in the country or the city, Howler Brothers has made a new classic jacket for fall.
  • The Henley: Knickerbocker Mfg. Co. Long-Sleeve Henley Tube Tee, $70 — We continue to recommend this rugged henley for its blend of comfort and style, plus that layering potential with a classic denim shirt.
  • The Pants: Proof Rover Pants, $98 — Made with proprietary, ultra-breathable and durable fabric, the tailored Proof Rover Pants are fit for the work week or the weekend.
  • The Boots: Taylor Stitch Trench Boots in Golden Weatherproof Suede, $348 — Refined, Goodyear welted Taylor Stitch boots that happen to be weather-ready? Absolutely.
  • The Socks: CHUP Niyol Socks, $19.98 — An engaging pair of stylish socks that aren’t over the top — that’s what you need on your feet this fall.
  • The Belt: Levi’s Cartago Multi-Hole Belt, $35 — A go-anywhere outfit like this calls for a stylish leather belt that can also, well, go anywhere.
  • The Watch: DuFrane Watches Barton Springs Diver, $590.98 — Made to take on everything from weekend hikes to a casual lunch, this functional-yet-stylish dive watch from DuFrane Watches should get plenty of fall wear. Don’t worry about matching your belt and your watch here — we’re taking casual to the max.

OK, that’s going to wrap up this #OOTD. What’s your take on it? Are you in favor of pairing a stylish denim shirt with more functionally minded pieces, like that jacket from Howler Brothers? To me, I think it just works. And from a weekend hike to a particularly laidback Friday in the office, a pair of the Proof Rover Pants are also going to get the job done — the same can be said of the incredible Taylor Stitch boots as seen above. Seriously, the beauty of building your outfit around one piece (in this case, the Billy Reid Denim Shirt) comes from the variety of options you get from just that one shirt alone. Handy, durable accessories are also going to prove useful no matter where you go, so I’d snap up the Levi’s Cartago Multi-Hole Belt and the exceptionally well-crafted, versatile Barton Springs Diver from DuFrane Watches while you still can. So, where can this ensemble take you? Just about anywhere from a football tailgate to a day hike to an afternoon of beers at your favorite brewery — and perhaps all three at once. How’s that for versatility.

The Friday Read: Paul Fredrick Deals, New Balance Sneakers and Labor Day Weekend

Editor’s note: Expect these posts once a week on Fridays — consider this a jumpstart on reading for your weekend downtime. Expect a mix of style and non-style content. For more entries, click here.

Can you believe it’s Friday? More importantly, can you believe it’s the Friday before Labor Day weekend? Where did the time go? For this style writer, a lot of this past month has been spent on the road — this particular week, that mean a long, relaxing (and fairly stylish) summer vacation to Florida, including some excellent time spent in the sun and sand. Plus, the trip was capped off by a standout AC/DC concert at the BB&T Center in Fort Lauderdale — I think my hearing is still recovering.  Seriously, though — what a band. You can read much more here, but know that it was worth the early, early flight back to New York the next morning (to say the least). Throughout this past month, it’s also been great to travel back to Michigan for a wedding weekend and a Grand Rapids trip (all the while focused on travel style). I’ve also been really thankful this summer to  check so many items off my to-do list, from an upstate trip to see Lucius, one of my favorite bands, to a standout weekend at Governors Ball and a heck of a Saturday at Panorama. The chance to travel so many neat places, spend so much time with great friends and check out so many cool sights and sounds is one I definitely don’t take for granted — and I hope it’s been a summer of checking things off your to-do list as well (with plenty of highlights, to boot!). But we’re not done yet —  with Labor Day coming up, there are still plenty of chances to dress in style; what else would you expect? And we’ve got a jam-packed next few weeks of content — you can look out for a Fall Style Wish List and neat features that run the gamut from what to wear during football season to more personal travel style posts. Are you ready? I sure am. Keep up with daily style tips and tricks on Instagram, and check out a bit more daily #menswear at The Style Guide Facebook page.

#OOTD: How to Wear a Denim Dress Shirt

Editor’s note: You’ve surely seen this hashtag lots of different places, including on Instagram. But how does that carry over to real life? The #OOTD will take one great item and put together a versatile, stylish outfit around it. Look for past features here. Thanks to Paul Fredrick for partnering with The Style Guide on today’s post and shirt review.

There’s only one way to do business casual — right? Maybe a classic blue Oxford, tan chinos and stylish leather dress shoes? Well, that’s certainly one way to look at it. But the great thing about being into matters of style is that there’s not really one set uniform any more. Now, there are certainly preferred ways to dress (preferably not using Mr. Kanye West as an example) and you definitely need to keep fit and proportion in mind, but there’s room for experimentation. Such is the case with this week’s #OOTD here on The Style Guide. It starts out classically enough — using a button-down collar shirt and grey pants as the outfit’s base, but deviates from there. The denim dress shirt in particular is worth noting. Now that you’ve got that in line, how should you style this shirt? Well, we don’t want to give away all the good stuff — read on for more, and send me a tweet on Twitter if you have a style suggestion you’d like to see covered.

Part casual, part classic and all wearable -- taking a denim shirt and mixing things up.

Part casual, part classic and all wearable — taking a denim shirt and mixing things up.

The Shirt: Paul Fredrick Slim-Fit Non-Iron Solid Twill Shirt, $89.50 — Made from textured 100 percent cotton twill that looks just like your favorite pair of dark denim, this shirt is a welcome change of place from a white Oxford or even a lighter blue chambray shirt.

The Jacket: Rogue State Suede Bomber Jacket, $139.99 — How do you mix up a crisp business-casual look even further? With a bomber that’s slick and anything but straightforward. Even if it’s a bit warm now, this jacket should be a fall workhorse.

The Pants: Dockers Jean Cut Slim Fit Pants, $58 — While slim grey chinos would also work here, there’s just something about a denim shirt that calls for a  bit more texture, and these five-pocket pants, inspired by classic denim and cut slim, are just the ticket.

The Sneakers: Todd Snyder x P.F. Flyers Grounder Hi-Top in Olive, $130 — The latest iteration of the Todd Snyder x P.F. Flyers collaboration  is the perfect way to trade out brown leather chukka boots for footwear that’s sporty but still outfit-appropriate. Wear them now, wear them on the weekends and look forward to fall.

The Socks: American Trench Textured Herringbone Supima Cotton Socks, $15 — There’s certainly a lot of darker color going on in this outfit, but these rich navy socks complement the olive sneakers, blue twill shirt and brown bomber jacket nicely.
The Watch: Jack Mason Brand Nautical 3-Hand Watch, $157.98 — Jack Mason stylishly merges the sporty, casual and refined in one timepiece inspired by nautical instruments. It’s the ideal addition to an ensemble that’s clean and fast.

The Belt: Maximum Henry Standard 02 Belt, $74.98 — The most “business casual” part of this outfit might be this slim, refined belt. Sizes are limited right now, but you can also find Maximum Henry belts at his Web site.

The Everyday Carry: This Is Ground Leatherback Writer 3, $84.98 — Everyone needs that one everyday carry item that can do it all, and this is the way to go. It holds your smartphone, doubles as a wallet and features a notebook slot and room for all your other odds and ends.
If ever you feel like you might be in a wardrobe rut, take the time to dream up some new outfit combinations, ways that you can use what you’ve already got to your advantage (or heck, enter the Paul Fredrick giveaway as discussed earlier and win some new clothes!). Working high-top sneakers into an office or work outfit might not be  for everyone, but with clean and classic styling potential, it’s worth a shot. And a slim-fitting denim dress shirt is the thinking man’s change of pace in terms of texture and color on the shirting front. Lastly, who couldn’t use a handsome bomber jacket and a sporty-yet-refined watch? These are all items worth considering in terms of your next #OOTD or your next #menswear purchase. Got questions or final thoughts? Leave ’em in the comments below.

#OOTD: Dressing for a Laidback Office

Editor’s note: You’ve surely seen this hashtag lots of different places, including on Instagram. But how does that carry over to real life? The #OOTD will take one great item and put together a versatile, stylish outfit around it. Look for past features here.

If you haven’t noticed on the calendar, we’re still in the midst of a pretty hot August. And even if you’ve got other tactics for fighting the heat in style — like rocking lightweight linen pants or a chambray blazer — there are still times where you might feel you’ve run out of ideas. Or rather, where you just want to look sharp and put-together even in a work environment where things are decidedly more casual. That’s where today’s 9-to-5 look comes in. Although you can add a classic blazer if you’d like, we’re ditching the jacket in favor of a well-fitting, lightweight denim shirt. It’s a welcome style swerve from a slim blue Oxford, believe me. And when paired up with style essentials that are crisp but not overly stuffy (like suede chukkas), you’ve got a head-to-toe ensemble that looks just fine, even sans blazer. So get that credit card at the ready, open a few extra browser tabs (online shopping is the best, am I right??) and check out the below #OOTD. For a real-time look at what your author is wearing on the daily, head to Instagram or Twitter.

Taking the standard business casual outfit & updating it with suede chukkas, a floral tie and a casual denim shirt.

The Pants: J. Crew Bowery Classic Pant in Cotton Twill, $79.50 — J. Crew excels at making style staples that work in multiple situations, and these cotton twill pants featuring a tailored-but-not-tight fit are no exception; you could also style them up with leather sneakers, but they work best in this biz-casual scenario.
Frank & Oak
The Shirt: JackThreads The Denim Shirt, $24.50 — Although this shirt featured prominently in a recent #OOTD on how to dress for a casual summer day, it can also be livened up with a lightweight tie; plus, that price is a fantastic value.

The Tie: Ties.com Blue Cotton Florence Tie, $20 — What’s the ideal complement to a light blue shirt? A navy floral cotton tie, of course. Pick up some no-show socks from Ties.com while you’re shopping, too.

The Shoes: Blu Kicks Tahoe Sand Chukka, $128 — While you could also rock some stylish leather loafers here, unlined suede chukkas are going to provide comfort, a shot of color and the ability to be worn underneath a rolled hem — they tie everything together even more casually — of course, that means you need comfortable no-show socks, too.

The Belt: Anderson’s Stretch Woven Leather Belt, $195 — A belt that’s nearly $200? Well, when you can wear it all four seasons and with outfits dressy or casual, you’ll get plenty of use out of it (see this #OOTD for another example).
The Watch: Jack Mason Nautical 3-Hand Watch, $157.98 — The great folks at Huckberry always curate stylish essentials for your everyday, and this unique watch that plays off nautical design inspiration is no exception. It’s dressy and sharp, yet water-resistant up to 100 meters.

The Briefs: Mack Weldon 18-Hour Jersey Boxer Briefs in Bossa Nova, $24 — When it comes to finishing touches, the Mack Weldon team has you all set. The brand’s boxer briefs might just be the most comfortable and high-performing on the market.
The Everyday Carry: Field Notes Brand Original Ruled Notebook (3-pack), $9.95 — If you’ve been looking for a low-profile addition to your desk, these notebooks are the way to go — they’re a design lover’s dream, measured and made with precision and accuracy in mind. Not a bad addition to your daily carry, right?
If you find yourself at a bit of a #menswear impasse when it comes to mixing up your summer style, it’s best to stick with what you know. That is, a shirt that’s well-fitting and casual, plus crisp dress pants, for starters. The touches that finish everything off — like suede chukkas, a unique watch and dependable accessories — go a long way in making this look one that’s refined and just a bit different from what you might normally wear on a daily basis. And shoes like those comfortable suede chukkas can rack up a lot of mileage in other situations both casual and refined, so they’re a wise pick-up now. Got questions or suggestions on this #OOTD? Leave it in the comments below, or drop me a note on Facebook.
