Flint and Tinder Chore Coat — $158

Possibly the best jacket for a summer evening.

We’ve talked about what to wear when it gets hot out this summer, so now, let’s talk about a jacket to wear when it gets cold this summer. It’s going to happen when the sun goes down on certain nights, so you might as well grab this rugged chore coat from the good folks at Flint and Tinder.

#OOTD: Shake Up Your Summer Style with the Best Men’s T-shirt

Right off the bat: You know it’s summer, and you know you need to be wearing a stylish T-shirt. You’ve probably got a ton of T-shirts in your drawer, right? But do you have the best men’s T-shirt (or at least, arguably the best)? That’s where we’ll begin today’s #OOTD — with a Todd Snyder x Champion T-shirt that’s actually anything but basic. Consider it a rugged T-shirt for summer that you can wear on its own (in the case of today’s look) or layered up underneath, say, a denim shirt or your favorite trucker jacket. But the key with making the seemingly humble T-shirt work for you — be it for back-patio beers or a trail hike — is to pick the right one (again, Todd Snyder x Champion has you covered), and then add the right summer style essentials around it. That means we’ll go with a pair of the best men’s shorts for lightweight functionality and dependability, then we’ll accent ’em with a pair of eco-friendly sneakers for feel-good fashion and functionality. What looks seemingly simple on the surface can actually be stylish as all-get-out, but you’ve just got to know where to start. It’s breezy, it’s cool, it works for a hot summer day or an unexpectedly chilly night — it’s a must-have. For the summer months, the best T-shirt for men can certainly put in a lot of work for you. Here’s how to wear it (oh, and if you like this look, let me know on Twitter).

A simple T-shirt, worn in a stylish and effective way.

  • The Tee: Todd Snyder x Champion Basic Jersey Tee, $50 — Leave it to Todd Snyder x Champion to churn out one of the most consistent, best men’s T-shirts for summer wear. A rugged T-shirt is something every guy needs (yourself included).
  • The Shorts: Relwen Flyweight Flex Shorts, $158 — For the ultimate in casual summer style, you need some of the best men’s shorts. That’s just non-negotiable — and the Relwen Flyweight Flex Shorts are the right way to go.
  • The Stylish Sneakers: SeaVees Legend Sneakers Seachange, $80 — To kick back this weekend (and every summer weekend), get these perfectly casual, stylish sneakers. It helps that this is one pair of eco-friendly sneakers you can feel good about rocking.
  • The Rugged Watch: Buck Mason Mulholland Explorer Wristwatch, $895 — You’ve read about this classic watch before on the blog, and it’s back today in a big way. A stylish everyday watch, especially a NATO strap watch, is just what this look needs.
  • The Everyday Carry: Billykirk No. 231 Journal Holder, $115 — For jotting down notes and ideas at home or out on the trail, get this stylish leather journal holder from my pals at Billykirk, will ya?
  • The Hat: Huckberry Canvas Snapback, $30 — Now, a canvas snapback might not be the type of stylish ballcap everyone prefers, but when you want a cool yet rugged hat to keep the sun off your face, you could do worse than Huckberry.
  • The Audio Essential: Sennheiser PXC550 II Headphones, $350 — Whether you’re connected to your home sound system or out on the go, the best over-ear headphones, especially a pair from Sennheiser, are the right way to go.
  • The Summer Beverage: GrowlerWerks uKeg Go, $99 — The proper summer beverage? Your favorite beer, preferably from a local brewery, served up cold via the GrowlerWerks uKeg Go — it’s one of the best growlers around, folks.

As you can hopefully see from the ensemble above, finding and wearing the right T-shirt for summer doesn’t have to be boring or standard. In fact, with just a few tweaks and some additions via the best men’s gear, the Todd Snyder x Champion T-shirt shown above stands out from the pack even more. It’s a bit of an investment, but ultimately, it’s an affordably priced tee given the long-lasting quality you’re getting — and it looks particularly great for casual weekend style with the Relwen Flyweight Flex Shorts, which are well-suited for both back-deck weekend hangs and socially distanced hikes. Add some eco-friendly sneakers into the mix via SeaVees, and you’ve got the makings of a very stylish #OOTD for summer. There’s more to this look though, starting with the rugged dependability of a stylish everyday watch from Buck Mason — it’s understated yet stylish, perfectly well-suited to teaming up with the functional Huckberry Canvas Snapback shown above. See, you’re looking great AND keeping the sun off your face. Naturally, you’ll also be staying hydrated with one of the best growlers via the good folks at GrowlerWerks. How can it get better than that? In my mind, well, with the sun at your back and some excellent tunes playing through your Sennheiser headphones, it can’t be topped. Stay stylish and stay safe out there, friends.

See Now, Buy Now: These Florsheim Oxfords Are The Perfect Summer Shoes

It’s hard to believe we’re rolling into July right now, and that means you assuredly need to sort out your summer footwear rotation — start with some of the best shoes for summer from revered American footwear maker Florsheim. Style Pick of the Week: Converse Chuck Taylor 70 Sneakers

Classic sneakers that are as good as it gets.

Folks, what better way to celebrate the Fourth of July than with a truly iconic, all-American pair of sneakers — some of the most classic, best men’s sneakers in this country (and on the planet)? So it goes with the instantly recognizable, very easy-to-wear, cool-as-can-be Converse Chuck Taylor 70. An iconic pair of sneakers since day one (and available in unisex sizing), they could just be the best sneakers to buy now  — particularly if you’re feeling very, very patriotic. And heck, if you simply need a new pair of affordable low-top sneakers at a great price? My friends, Converse sneakers are here for you — to say the very least.

I’ve been a fan of Converse since my college days, when I would pick up a pair at my local mall, but since we’re all doing things a little bit differently these days, I’d say you should go right ahead and order your new favorite sneakers from the good folks at Need Supply Co. OK, now that that’s out of the way … let’s talk about ’em. If you follow our See Now, Buy Now series, it might seem surprising that Converse hasn’t come up before. The brand is an American institution after all, founded more than 100 years ago. And that’s actually great news: The Converse Chuck Taylor 70 are so well-executed, they’re as timeless as it gets.

SHOP: The Converse Chuck Taylor 70

Simple, straightforward and yet oh-so-stylish.

If you’ve been searching for some of the best sneakers under $100, these are unequivocally it. Made from durable textile with an equally durable rubber outsole, they should provide plenty of all-day comfort, whether you throw them on to run socially distanced errands around town or a take a masked stroll in your local park. The thing about the Converse Chuck Taylor 70 is that they’re so timeless, you can style them with practically anything. Slim light wash jeans and a classic white tee (like the one seen here)? Go for it. A slub polo and olive chino shorts? For sure. A rugged henley and  black denim? Yes, you can rock the Converse Chuck Taylor 70 with that outfit, as well.

You can even take these classic sneakers for a spin at the office with dark blue denim, a navy cotton blazer and an Oxford shirt (when we can all return to offices, that is). But for right now, I’d suggest you wear your new favorite sneakers with all the casual trappings of summer to enjoy breezy days — a cool craft beer growler, a stylish Bluetooth speaker and your feet kicked up, Converse on. What could be better, right?

The Friday Read: The Best New Summer Shirt, Fourth of July Weekend & Huckberry Essentials

Editor’s note: If you like what you read here, you might love The Style Guide In Brief, a mini-newsletter I’m launching next week. Expect 2-3 weekly dispatches on what to wear, what to imbibe and what to listen to — coming soon! Click here to learn more and sign up.
Hey hey, whaddya say? “Dad-style” greetings aside, I’m about as upbeat as can be as we head into what should be a laidback (albeit unique) Fourth of July weekend. In fact, I’m about as laidback and relaxed as the Surfside Supply Shirt seen above, available via the good folks at Bombfell — it’s one of the best short-sleeve shirts for summer, with the kind of style you should look to channel this weekend (cold beer sold separately). I’ll be wearing several of my favorite short-sleeve shirts for summer all weekend long, not least because it’s time for the big one: A safely done trip back to Michigan to see my family after long, long months in quarantine in Brooklyn. I’ll be taking all necessary precautions as I leave the city, masked up and hand sanitizer going strong — and in Michigan, social distancing via my brother’s lovely house will be key. With my family’s approval, we all feel safe, healthy and ready for some quality time together! Above all else, it’ll be a relief to see family and visit (socially distanced!) with friends after some long, tough months in New York City.

You best believe I’ll be packing summer style essentials from brands like Taylor Stitch on the trip, and I’ll also be looking forward to sipping on some fresh craft beer and of course, chowing down on a few hearty burgers right off the grill.  What’s on your agenda for these strange and trying times? I can only hope it involves rest, relaxation, and of course … the Friday Read we’ve got outlined below. In search of new artwork for your home or a new, cool beer glass? Those tidbits can be found below (keep scrolling!). It also seems like as good a time as any to kick back with some relaxing summer jams — I put together this WFH playlist earlier this year, but now would be the right time to enjoy some laidback listening around the bonfire, right? Yes, indeed (think Yo La Tengo, Alvvays & Big Thief, to name a few!). Keep on scrolling for more from the world of menswear and beyond, and I’m wishing everyone a very happy Fourth of July weekend. Stay safe out there, folks!

A limited-edition, signed print via Jack Ludlam and Taylor Stitch.

A seriously cool way to enjoy your favorite beer.

  • Let’s talk for a second about beer to drink this weekend — or rather, a new beer glass to buy as you  imbibe your favorite craft beer for the Fourth of July and beyond. The good folks at Huckberry are now selling the seriously cool Whiskey Peaks Beer Glass, featuring a topographic impression of Yosemite National Park’s Half Dome. Is it one of the coolest beer glasses around — for this weekend and well beyond? Yes, sir — no doubt.
  • We just talked about the best glass for your beer, so … wondering what to sip on this weekend? In my mind, that’s easy — you’re going to want the aptly named Anchor Liberty Ale, an iconic craft beer that’s meant to be enjoyed during a hot day on the boat or a cool evening around a bonfire. Heck, if you’re in the San Francisco area, use the handy Anchor Beer To Go feature for curbside pick-up — those outside the Bay Area should head toward the Anchor Beer Finder to find this legendary beer elsewhere. Brewed 45 years ago to honor the 200th anniversary of Paul Revere’s famed midnight ride, this is a classic craft beer worth enjoying again and again.
  • If you’re not about the most sustainable menswear around, well, you should certainly change that approach. It gets all the easier when you consider Wellen from my good friends at Huckberry. This surf-and-sun brand channels laidback summer style to a “T,”‘ as you might have read about on the blog in the past. With that being said, I rounded up the best style essentials from Wellen for GearMoose — give it a read, then stock up accordingly.

That’s just about going to wrap it up for me today, folks. But wait … I’m going to leave you with one last Fourth of July style suggestion. You need to have some cool boat shoes on your feet this weekend, and better yet, you need to know how to wear boat shoes in the best way possible for the rest of summer. That’s where this #OOTD comes into play — in fact, the Todd Snyder x Sebago boat shoes featured in that piece are some of the most unique ones I’ve seen in recent memory. I hope you feel the same, and I hope you enjoy time with family & friends this weekend. Thanks for reading — next round’s on me!

Cheers,

-Beau

#OOTD: Here’s How to Wear The Best Men’s Chinos for Summer

If you thought you knew everything about how to wear chinos for summer, I’m here to tell you to think again. Namely, the best men’s chinos are, first and foremost, going to shake up exactly how you pull together the rest of the look — one great piece can’t help but elevate the rest of your game. Of course, when you kick off your #OOTD with Todd Snyder slim-fit chinos, things get a whole lot cooler (and better) from there. We’ve talked plenty on the blog about how to wear chinos, but now that we’re essentially entering July (gasp!), maybe you want to switch things up a bit. Today, I’ll give you a few pointers on how to do just that. While you could easily wear, say, one of the best Oxford shirts and a navy cotton blazer with this look, we’ll be taking it a more casual, rugged direction. For instance: A stylish lightweight short-sleeve shirt does the heavy lifting here, and a more traditional summer jacket is swapped out with a durable chore jacket for unique summer style. Naturally, we’ll dive into some stylish everyday carry essentials and other gear picks that are crucial to giving this look its seriously cool, modern appeal. But lest we forget: You’ve got to get the best chinos for men to make it all work, so let’s start there. Enjoy the full ensemble below, folks.

Classic chinos worn in fresh, modern way.

  • The Chinos: Todd Snyder Slim-Fit Tab Front Stretch Chinos, $118 — Trust me — any summer #OOTD should start with the best men’s chinos, and these Todd Snyder chinos fit that definition perfectly. Dressy-yet-laidback, highly versatile … some of the best pants for men this season, easily.
  • The Stylish Short-Sleeve Shirt: Buck Mason Draped Twill Shirt, $85 — Just as reliably as Buck Mason makes one of the best denim shirts, so to do they come through with one of the best short-sleeve shirts for summer.
  • The Summer Jacket: Freemans Sporting Club Chore Jacket, $330 — To shake things up a bit, reach for a rugged chore jacket, one made from lightweight Japanese denim, to layer up on breezy summer days and nights.
  • The Perfect Summer Shoes: Nisolo Chamberlain Penny Loafers, $124 — This #OOTD mixes high and low, like a rugged chore jacket alongside slim chinos, so best keep mixing it up with these stylish leather loafers.
  • The Watch: VAER Watches C5 Heritage Leather Watch, $250 — You know what this ensemble needs? A stylish leather watch, one that’s going to add some rugged polish to this look (which itself is suited for date night at home or to-go cocktails).
  • The Belt: Billykirk No. 117 Mechanic’s Belt, $99 — We’re all about the accessories here on the blog, and the best leather belt is a must-have — especially when it’s made by Billykirk. Go ahead and mix your leather shades here — I won’t tell a soul.
  • The Sunglasses: Roav Lennox Foldable Sunglasses, $175 — Yes, that’s right — you can fold these stylish sunglasses up and take ’em with you on the go. Are they the coolest sunglasses I’ve seen in some time because of that? Yessir.
  • The Summer Sipper: Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey, Price Varies — Let’s talk whiskey for one second. While I love a summer beer as much as the next guy, I’ve found Proper No. Twelve to be a surprisingly enjoyable summer sipper when enjoyed on the rocks or with some club soda. Perhaps you’ll feel the same about Connor McGregor’s whiskey brand, no?

Alright, so perhaps this #OOTD is now changing how you think about, well, how to wear chinos this summer, right? Critically, it all starts with some Todd Snyder chinos that balance dressy and casual style quite nicely (if I do say so myself). We’ll take it a step further with something that’s perhaps expected, but no less cool — one of the best short-sleeve shirts for summer, courtesy of our pals at Buck Mason. How do you shake things up even further beyond that? Go for a rugged chore jacket to give this look some extra edge, then slide right into stylish leather loafers for a nice change of pace (seriously, Nisolo makes some of the most sustainable men’s footwear out there, too). Naturally, this look calls for stylish accessories that stand out in the right way — enter the best leather belt from Billykirk, then accent it with a stylish leather watch from VAER Watches for all-day style and durability. And for functional day-to-night style on the go (socially distanced), I think you’ll certainly find some unique, foldable sunglasses are just the right move here. Pop ’em in the pocket of your denim chore jacket when the sun goes down. Of course, what’s this look missing? Why a fine summer sipper in the form of Proper No. Twelve whiskey — how’s that sound? Can’t get any better. If you’ve got thoughts on this look, head to Twitter to give me your take. Thanks for reading — stay stylish!

See Now, Buy Now: The Todd Snyder x Sebago Chukkas Are Summer’s Best Shoes

Todd Snyder x Sebago is as cool as it gets for stylish summer footwear.

As one might expect, it can be a lot right off the bat to call a pair of stylish summer shoes … well, the best summer shoes. But for my money’s worth (and yours!), I think you just might find that to be the case with the Todd Snyder x Sebago line of stylish, durable summer footwear. The Todd Snyder x Sebago Tatanka Chukka Boots ($175) in particular are everything you could ask for in a pair of classic summer shoes — and then some. Crucially, they’re also here just in time for the Fourth of July weekend, and what could be better than that? Heck, is there anything more all-American than two brands like Todd Snyder and Sebago teaming up? Not quite. Snyder’s Iowa-born heritage and his love of classic Sebago shoes make this a natural pairing, to say the least. So, on to these must-have summer shoes. A crucial point, as well: You can get 15 percent off at Todd Snyder when you sign up for Todd Snyder E-mailsWhy would you want to do that, though? Read on, friends.

A classic pair of summer chukka boots, to be sure.

Note that the collection also features a pair of seriously cool Todd Snyder x Sebago boat shoes ($145), but for summer adventures that could involve socially distanced jaunts into town or evenings around the bonfire, the Todd Snyder x Sebago Tatanka Chukka is my top pick. Consider these a lightweight pair of chukka boots to team up with breezy navy chinos and a white polo for crisp summer style, or else wear ’em alongside light wash denim and a grey slub tee. Feel like going a bit more adventurous? Yes, I’d say you could wear the Todd Snyder x Sebago Tatanka Chukka Boots with navy shorts (go for a pair with a 7-inch inseam to hit above the knee), plus a grey henley (I like henleys from Buck Mason!) for standout summer style. Again, these tips apply for Fourth of July weekend style as well as the rest of the summer.  What are you waiting for? The long weekend is calling, and Todd Snyder x Sebago should be what you’re wearing.

A summer-ready color that pairs with just about anything you can dream up this season.

These stylish summer slip-ons are nearly everything you could ask for in a pair of footwear for warm weather, starting with the fact that, well, they’re easy as can be to wear. Slide them on for (socially distanced) errands or a brewery pick-up visit, rock ’em while hanging outside & then kick them off when you’re done for the day. That’s it, easy as that. You’re getting a lot of versatility from these classic summer slip-ons, too. These are the kind of shoes to wear with slim grey chinos and a classic polo for slightly dressier occasions (summer date night at home, anyone?), and yet, you’re going to find yourself wearing the SeaVees Baja Slip-Ons with chino shorts and a crisp white tee, too. The washed linen upper is ideal for casual style in the summer, while the memory foam footbed offers plenty of comfort — think of these as summer house shoes for day-to-night style. The molded herringbone outsole is also a timeless SeaVees touch that finishes these sneakers off quite nicely. Before you finalize your summer shopping, make sure these essential slip-ons are in the mix.

With hot weather aplenty sweeping the country, maybe you’re in search of a watering hole and a cold beer while wearing one of the best men’s swimsuits?

I can only dream of that here in Brooklyn for the time being, but that doesn’t mean I’m not looking forward to getting out and about on my own in pursuit of new Brooklyn craft beer and the like. I had the recent chance to visit the newly opened Keg & Lantern Taproom, right near the waterfront in Red Hook, and can’t recommend it enough if you happen to live in the borough (or ever make it out that way!). Get the light and refreshing Pocho, a Mexican Lager ideal for hot summer days and nights — and if you do make it to the brewery’s original location in Greenpoint, be sure to get the excellent wings-and-pitcher deal. As often seems to be the case these days, I’ll also be spinning some new vinyl, with my pick of choice being the fantastic, brand-new “Punisher” by indie rock luminary Phoebe Bridgers. Have you given that album a listen? I plan on spinning it with my favorite coffee this weekend. For now though, we’ve got the rest of the Friday Read below — check out, then feel free to give me a follow on Twitter (if you’re not already following me!) or Instagram.

The coolest way to cover your face this summer? The two-pack also gives you even more utility from Buck Mason.

  • Keeping well-groomed in fine fashion is a necessity no matter the season — is it not? To that end, and for all my bearded brethren out there, I wrote about the best men’s beard grooming kits for GearMoose. If you’ve been searching high and low for grooming essentials, well, search no more. Remember, a well-groomed beard is but one of the summer style essentials should you have handy — in fact, it’s with you all the time! (Sorry, sorry — had to do it. Moving on!).
  • As you undoubtedly know, we’re all about the very best men’s gear on the blog. That’s why if you’re new (or new-ish) around these parts, I’d point you in the direction of my weekly  gear roundup known as The List. This recent entry is a good starting point, covering everything from the best new chinos to stylish leather dress shoes and a cool growler for cold brew (yes, that’s right!). Have fun stocking up, folks.

OK, my friends. We’re wrapping up today’s Friday Read in good time — still plenty of chances to get out there this weekend, after all. But before you go, I’ve got one last recommendation for you: A camp collar shirt needs to be on your summer shopping list ASAP, and you need to know how to rock it the right way. Hence, my guide on how to wear a camp collar shirt will have you sorted out in no time. That’s going to do it for me today. Have a great weekend, stay safe & thanks for reading, folks!
