#OOTD: The Right Way to Wear an Overshirt on a Chilly Summer Night

Does the phrase “chilly summer night” strike fear into your heart? Does that phrase seem more apt to describe early fall than late summer? Well, that might  be the case … but think of this #OOTD as a primer to transition from one season into the next. And in this case, the rugged overshirt in question is one that’s uniquely versatile & easily wearable after the sun goes down, no need to worry about overheating. In fact, the Flint and Tinder Bedford Camp Shirt is simply darn handy to keep around no matter the off-duty occasion, from hosting a backyard BBQ to pitching a tent under the stars — would you expect anything less from Flint and Tinder, after all? And I think you’ll find the way it’s being worn is similarly versatile and unique without going over the top (it’s still a bit warm out there, after all). So, it’s not a full-on flannel shirt, but neither is the Flint and Tinder Bedford Camp Shirt a breezy linen shirt. In fact, this ensemble is really ready for going off-trail, and yet at the same time, you can wear these gear picks out for a crisp end-of-summer cocktail if need be. It’s all just right when it comes to layering up. How would you wear the Flint and Tinder Bedford Camp ShirtCheck out the full rundown of style essentials for late summer below, then let’s hit the road.

A tough overshirt pairs up quite well with slim dark denim and a classic tee to close out summer — no matter where you go.

  • The Overshirt: Flint and Tinder Bedford Camp Shirt, $168 — Part overshirt, part versatile outdoor jacket, all style — soft-washed Bedford cotton and a pleasingly unique Hickory color make this rugged overshirt a must-have for late summer.
  • The Classic Tee: Taylor Stitch Heavy Bag Tee, $45 — Plain and simple, Taylor Stitch will never let you down — and neither will the sustainable, rugged Taylor Stitch Heavy Bag Tee, a perfect solo layer during the day — and equally perfect at sunset.
  • The Denim: Flint and Tinder Defender Denim, $138 Rugged dark blue denim also, similarly, never fails — especially when worn in pursuit of your favorite craft beer or more firewood, right? The Flint and Tinder Defender Denim just work.
  • The Rugged Boots: Red Wing Heritage 6-Inch Classic Moc Boots, $290 — Make no mistake, we’ve talked about these Red Wing Heritage boots on the blog before — time to break ’em back out of the closet. The perfect combo of durability & style.
  • The Watch: Lum-Tec M84 Automatic Watch, $1,095 — Before you balk at the price of this rugged leather watch, just know that it’s an everyday watch you can wear starting now … and heck, through next winter. Lum-Tec gets it right.
  • The Socks: Orvis Invincible Extra Cotton Socks, $49 (Three-pack) — Want exceedingly comfortable socks that can stand up to anything provide a heck of a lot of cushioning in the process? These Orvis socks do just that.
  • The Hat: Stetson Chapman Hat, $155 — To be sure, a classic Stetson hat undoubtedly isn’t for everyone … but given that this outfit screams “rugged outdoor adventure” (or heck, “whiskey distillery visit,”), it just works.
  • The Tough Everyday Bag: Filson Duffel Backpack, $245 — Does this exceptional Filson Duffel Backpack qualify as an “everyday bag,” per se? Maybe? It depends on where you take it — and for all of summer’s last adventures, it certainly fits the bill.

The thing about the end of summer is that when you gear up with the proper pieces, it can actually be enjoyable to start making the transition between seasons — take the Flint and Tinder Bedford Camp Shirt, for instance. It’s a soft-washed camp shirt that’s ideal for just that: Outdoor camping and hiking, plus day trips and brewery visits aplenty. You’re also getting a dash of versatile summer style with the Taylor Stitch Heavy Bag Tee, easy to wear during the day, and then fit to throw on the Flint and Tinder Bedford Camp Shirt atop when the sun dips down. Rugged dark blue denim also acts as a fine go-between from day to night, and this particular pair will get better the more you wear them (and trust me). Take it all in stride with a pair of trusty Red Wing Heritage boots, another menswear essential that goes from the trail to the town with ease. Of course, this #OOTD would be nothing without a rugged leather watch from Lum-Tec — this thing can take a beating, and then some. We’re topping it all off with a classic Stetson hat to keep the sun off your face while giving this ensemble some rugged appeal. And to haul whatever it is you happen to need on the everyday carry front? Load up the Filson Duffel Backpack. If you put all of these components together, you’re going to be more than ready to close out summer & head toward fall.

#OOTD: My Guide to Wearing a Chambray Shirt This Month — Or All Year

As you’ll see below, there might never be a bad time to wear a chambray shirt like the one we’re about to discuss today. We’ve mentioned it time and time again on the blog, but the best men’s chambray shirt (and there’s a difference between good and great), is a true four-season essential, as wearable now as it will be come September, October, November … you get the picture. But sometimes, getting through the seasonal doldrums that we find ourselves in right now isn’t as daunting as it might seem at first. In fact, it’s sometimes about taking tried-and-true men’s style essentials and having some fun with them. In the case of the classic chambray shirt on display today in our #OOTD series, that means it’s being worn with equally classic style picks that fit in regardless of season (yes, even in the sweltering August heat). Witness, for instance, the stylish slim chinos and the classic chukka boots in this ensemble, not to mention the positively rugged, investment-level watch — all worn with ease and casual cool for a look that’s as ready for happy hour as it is for a Casual Friday. Throw in accessories like a slim leather wallet, and you could even wear this look out on a date. See, the doldrums of summer aren’t a time to throw away style principles — stick to yours, wear this classic chambray shirt, and get ready for what lies ahead.

Mixing and matching classic picks with an essential chambray shirt.

  • The Chambray Shirt: Proof Strong Shirt, $128 — The best men’s chambray shirt? The chambray shirt to rule them all? I’ll leave that to you to decide, but there’s a good chance that … yes, yes it is.
  • The Classic Chinos: Wellen Easy Chinos, $88 — Keep things casual yet surprisingly polished with these stylish slim chinos, made sustainably in a classic color.
  • The Chukka Boots: Astorflex Greenflex Chukka Boots, $165 — There’s absolutely never a bad time to wear classic chukka boots, even in the middle of August — trust me on that. Astorflex gets ’em right.
  • The Watch: Lum-Tec M84 Automatic Watch, $1,095 — I’m admittedly not a huge watch snob, but there’s no question the Lum-Tec M84 Automatic (while pricey!) might just be one of the best men’s watches we’ve featured on this site. That’s it!
  • The Belt: Macondo Belts Inca Belt, $105 — Granted, you might not think of a stylish leather belt as a place to stand out in terms of pattern and design — change that with this number from Macondo Belts.
  • The Everyday Carry Essential: Tanner Goods Journeyman Wallet, $65 — Be it on the go to the office or to an evening dinner, a slim leather wallet carries only what you need.
  • The Daily Cologne: Ranger Station Birch Bark Cologne, $69 — This cologne from Ranger Station is pleasing, crisp & not too heavy for daily wear.
  • The Grooming Essential: Jack Henry Face Toner, $24 — I can’t recommend this lightweight, refreshing, functional toner from Jack Henry enough after using it every day for weeks. It’s a men’s grooming essential you need ASAP.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, sometimes, the best men’s chambray shirt is all you need to build a great outfit (or at least, the foundation of a great outfit). And it gets even better and even more seasonally friendly when you throw on easygoing Wellen chinos (it’s right in the name, after all!), plus classic chukka boots — granted, these are picks that work any time of the year, but they’ll do more than fine in August as we look toward (gasp) Labor Day. The right accessories elevate the chambray shirt from good to great, as well. Take the Lum-Tec M84 Automatic, a beast of a watch that’ll stand out stylishly as you roll up the sleeves on this shirt.

Couple that with the equally eyecatching stylish leather belt on display here, and this #OOTD is ready to be worn the office, shirt tucked in (or untucked — do as you please, of course). For keeping thing streamlined and smooth, grab your slim leather wallet from Tanner Goods — it’ll fit nicely in the front pocket of your chinos, and it’ll age the more you use it. All those little details stand out quite easily, too, including what should be a fantastic Ranger Station cologne (making this ensemble ready for date night). And in the way of a men’s grooming essential you shouldn’t go without, I’m a big fan of Jack Henry’s Face Toner (a  great outfit is nothing without a little T.L.C for your face, ehh?). Are you sold on the utility and versatility of the chambray shirt? You should be. Have questions? Drop me a line on Twitter. Cheers!

#OOTD: Wear This Gear to Your Next Summer Bonfire

I’ve talked on the blog before about how to dress for a summer bonfire — and namely, how summer bonfires remind me of the lovely, warm nights back in my home state of Michigan. I don’t often get to go to many bonfires now that I live in NYC, but if I did … this is the gear I would wear, starting with a stylish lightweight jacket for taking on summer breezes. Heck, these are the summer style essentials I’d recommend you wear as well, including a stylish short-sleeve shirt and more gear picks that toe the line between casual & rugged, just as ready for a day on the boardwalk as a beach bonfire later. Dressing for a bonfire, although seemingly casual, doesn’t mean you throw on athletic logo shorts & a baggy T-shirt and call it a day — at least, not to me. No sir, grab some classic SeaVees sneakers, throw on a vintage-inspired cap, load up a craft beer growler, and take in a lovely evening around the fire. If you’re surrounded by a multitude of family and friends? All the better. We’re running out of chances to enjoy summer, so it’s best you do it in style. And y’know what’s even better? This is the type of #OOTD you can wear all day long, and into the night. Sounds great to me. Enjoy!

The right mix of casual and rugged for a summer evening bonfire.

  • The Lightweight Jacket: Relwen Covert CPO, $148.98 — This stylish lightweight jacket is a heck of a deal when on sale, and it’s the perfect summer jacket for a breezy night around the fire.
  • The Shirt: Taylor Stitch Short-Sleeve Jack Shirt, $98 — This is the first of two Taylor Stitch picks gracing this outfit — a stylish short-sleeve shirt is an easygoing summer style essential, especially for a day at the beach & a bonfire.
  • The Shorts: Taylor Stitch Trail Shorts, $88 — While you still can, wear stylish shorts, especially this utility-minded pair from Taylor Stitch. These are some of the best men’s shorts for the rest of summer.
  • The Sneakers: SeaVees Legend Sneakers in Chambray, $88 — For just a shade under $90, get the classic sneakers that are simply perfect to wear to a bonfire — durable, comfortable & made with that iconic SeaVees quality.
  • The Watch: Komrade White Pointer Watch, $808.98 — For a day on the water or the trail, or an evening when you’re called into firewood duty, wear a durable dive watch — sure, Komrade makes an investment-level watch … but it’s worth it.
  • The Everyday Carry Essential: Filson Ranger Backpack, $225 — Whether you’ve packed up this rugged Filson backpack as part of a day hike or a beach trip, it’s the everyday carry essential to haul, well, everything you need (bug spray not included).
  • The Hat: Faherty Brand Sunset Patch Cord Hat, $38 — Throw on a classic ballcap from Faherty Brand to top off this outfit — it’s got just enough rugged style for an evening bonfire.
  • The Craft Beer Must-Have: OtterBox Elevation 64 Tumbler, $56 — If you show up to the bonfire with some delicious craft beer, that’s great. If it’s being transported in this OtterBox tumbler with enough to share? Even better.

If the above #OOTD is any indication, then the bar has been raised when it comes to dressing for a summer bonfire, starting with the perfect summer jacket to help you fight an unexpectedly chilly summer night. It’s the kind of piece that pairs ably with a stylish short-sleeve shirt from one of my favorite brands (that’s Taylor Stitch, folks), and the combo gets even better when teamed up with stylish utility shorts from the same brand. They’re functional enough for a day getting around town, and they’re laidback enough to enjoy some cold beers from an OtterBox tumbler, right? This outfit gets even more bonfire-ready when you look at what’s on your: perfectly casual, classic sneakers in a summer-friendly chambray fabric. Leave the heavy leather boots at home for this venture, folks. One thing you shouldn’t leave at home? A durable dive watch you can wear all day — even to snag some extra firewood. Top everything off, literally, with a classic ballcap from Faherty Brand, and be sure to haul along your gear with a rugged Filson backpack for whatever the day has in store. #OOTD: A New Way to Wear A Stylish Short-Sleeve Shirt for Summer

Maybe you’ve got a very specific look in mind when it comes to a stylish short-sleeve shirt — and perhaps, it just so happens to be a look that’s not actually stylish (Think: Maybe the short-sleeve shirts your dad used to wear?). We’re stepping it up in a big way today for the rest of summer, introducing you to what could just be your favorite short-sleeve shirt — and it should come as no surprise that it comes from Taylor Stitch in a handsome indigo fabric. See, it’s already a major improvement from other short-sleeve shirts. The best short-sleeve shirts on the market actually offer more versatility than you think, giving you the option to wear them to a rooftop cocktail hour or even to the office on a casual Friday — that’s the case with the Taylor Stitch Jack Shirt as seen below, at least. It’s the same fit you know and love, done in a way that just works for summer (namely, the lack of fabric on your arms). And when you pair it with slim chinos from Flint and Tinder, plus a sleek pair of refined leather slip-ons, you’re looking at a shirt that’s seriously sharp — not sloppy (a la Dwight Schrute). We’re even mixing in a stylish leather dress watch for good measure. The whole #OOTD below is visually interesting and versatile, fitting for a weekend patio dinner or weeknight rooftop drinks — or, again, a day at the office (the Taylor Stitch Jack Shirt never fails). Rethink what you thought you knew about the short-sleeve shirt, then let’s get down to business.

The Best Basics. Summer Ready.

A switched-up way to wear your new short-sleeve shirt from Taylor Stitch — cheers!

  • The Shirt: Taylor Stitch Short-Sleeve Jack Shirt in Mini Indigo Waffle, $98 — Your favorite menswear brand is now making your favorite short-sleeve shirt in a handsome indigo fabric — a perfect way to switch things up.

  • The Stylish Slip-Ons: Nisolo Alejandro Woven Slip-Ons, $178 — These refined leather slip-ons are the right way to switch up your summer footwear — wear them out to a lovely patio dinner.
  • The Watch: Lonegrade HDR140 Watch, $415 — While you could go with a casual NATO strap watch, this stylish leather dress watch from Lonegrade keeps things refined.
  • The Everyday Essentials: Bespoke Post Worn Box, $45 — For a stylish night on the town, reach for the Bespoke Post Worn Box, featuring a slim leather belt and a handy money clip — easy as that.

  • The Grooming Essential: Duke Cannon Solid Cologne Kit, $75 — Step up yoiur scents with one of three options from Duke Cannon — their Solid Cologne is a personal favorite, and it’ll keep you smelling great even in the heat.
  • The Essential Basic: Flint and Tinder Heritage Boxer Briefs, $28 — Take care of all the details that matter with the lauded Flint and Tinder Heritage Boxer Briefs.

Shop Mott & Bow Today! So, do you think you’ve found your favorite short-sleeve shirt quite yet? Or a new way to wear it? Hopefully — and ideally, it’ll pair up nicely with slim chinos from Flint and Tinder for a nice mix of high-low style. When you use a slim short-sleeve shirt in rich indigo fabric as the base of your outfit, you’re setting the tone quite nicely — again, this isn’t a short-sleeve shirt of years past. You’re also making it clear that things are different when it comes to your refined leather slip-ons — dressier than white canvas sneakers, more laidback and summer-friendly than lace-up leather brogues. The rest of your accessories should also set the tone for a summer cocktail hour or a weekend dinner, from your stylish leather dress watch to a pair of the best men’s sunglasses — yes, that’s right. The best. The key with this entire ensemble comes in sticking to your guns: Keeping things summer-friendly and casual, yet cool. Duke Cannon’s Solid Cologne is an underrated grooming essential to take this look to the next level, and the Bespoke Post Worn Box, with a handsome money clip, keeps things nice and streamlined. How else to close out this #OOTD? Why, with a pair of the Flint and Tinder Heritage Boxer Briefs as an essential basic. Looking forward to the rest of summer? I know I am.

#OOTD: How to Wear a Classic Oxford Shirt for the Rest of Summer

If, for some reason, wearing a classic Oxford shirt — even a Flint and Tinder Oxford shirt — sounds a bit boring or stale to you, well, we’re here to change all of that today with a new #OOTD for your summer style pleasure. The basics of the classic Oxford shirt stay the same, and yet the wearing occasions and the way it’s being worn are different here. Namely, we’re mixing it up with lightweight slim chinos and classic chukka boots — that way, you’ve got the option to wear it out to the bar on the weekend or head to the office on a laidback day (or, both!). Again, it’s all about the way you’re wearing a classic Oxford shirt, and in this instance, it’s not stuffy in the slightest. Throw in a pair of the best men’s sunglasses, and this #OOTD is even cool enough (literally and figuratively) for a first date. Again, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill Oxford shirt — it’s cut slim and tailored, and in a lighter, breezier fabric for summer (undoubtedly critical). The Oxford shirt has remained a style staple through the years for a reason, and it’s long past its preppy roots — heck, unbutton the buttondown collar if you’re feeling a bit adventurous (wink, wink). The way this outfit is put together, it’s ready for whatever you’ve got in mind this season. To see how I’m wearing my Oxford shirt, head to my Instagram.

A fresh-yet-classic way to wear your Oxford shirt.

Ideally, this look is shaking up the way you think about your Oxford shirt — I know it’s made me see it in a different light. In the case of this Flint and Tinder Oxford shirt, it’s the right way to start an outfit, featuring lightweight summer fabric and a breezy-yet-tailored fit. In short, it’s the perfect pairing with stylish slim chinos, which makes this combo again ready for the office or for your favorite craft beer bar. But what really takes it from good to great are your accessories, selected with eyecatching versatility in mind. Take a pair of the best men’s sunglasses and mix ’em in with the stunning, sharp new Lonegrade HDR140 Watch, and you’ve got pieces that reflect your personality while looking stylish as heck at the same time. That’s also where subtly stylish printed socks come back into play, even in the summer months. They will sit especially nicely atop classic chukka boots, too. You can’t go wrong with any of these picks on their own, but paired up together? Talk about a major win, right? And for when you need to take your favorite craft beer on the go in style, finish things off with an ever-crucial accessory — a stylish water bottle. It’s a thing, I’m serious! And lest we forget, a stylish leather belt is really going to go a long way toward tying this all together. How about it? Who’s ready for the rest of July? Good answer.

#OOTD: Wear Your New Favorite Chinos This Way for Summer

The simple pleasures are really what summer is all about — like wearing a pair of the best men’s chinos to do, well, whatever it is you please. From preparing a lovely meal on your patio grill to spending long hours with friends and family on your back deck or on vacation, summer seems primed for those types of opportunities — especially if you wear the proper men’s style essentials as outlined in this #OOTD, including, again, some stylish men’s chinos from Flint and Tinder (more on why you need that exact pair in a second). The right pair of lightweight, stylish chinos can step things up a notch from shorts — no matter how stylish your shorts might be, it’s sometimes a nice gesture to shake things up a bit and go just a touch dressier. And for an easygoing summer evening, we’ll balance things out with a stylish short-sleeve shirt (leave the blazer at home), to go along with a classic NATO strap watch. The overall impact of this #OOTD is one that nods toward casual style and great times, without being too bold or over-the-top — the absolute perfect balance for summer, in my mind. No matter where your plans take you, that sounds agreeable to me. To see how I’m dressing for summer, head to my Instagram — and to get the full ensemble, read below!

A mix of easygoing refinement and summer style staples. Tequila not included.

Are you onboard with this #OOTD for a casual summer night? When you keep the focus on simple, classic men’s style essentials — I.E. stylish men’s chinos from Flint and Tinder — the rest of your ensemble can truly shine. And lightweight chinos are going to provide a perfect counterbalance in terms of style when paired up with a stylish short-sleeve shirt from Lisboa — see, you’re already all set for your next rooftop or backyard party. Throw in some summer-ready touches, like your new favorite casual watch and a pair of the rugged-yet-cool Yuketen Canoe Mocs, and you’re breezy and well-dressed (possibly the best-dressed guy at the entire affair??). Summer calls for on-point accessories across the board, including stylish sunglasses and a stylish suede belt  — it’s all about keeping things casual yet still sharp. Whether you host or spend the evening with friends, I’d also wager just about anyone can appreciate something like a make-your-own margarita glass set, ideally filled with a homemade recipe.  Last but not least, to tie things all together … put on a richly scented solid cologne from Duke Cannon to really drive home the easygoing-yet-stylish appeal of this #OOTD. That’s about everything you need for a great summer day or night, correct? Correct. Enjoy the season, folks!

#OOTD: How to Wear a Short-Sleeve Henley All Summer Long

What’s your perfect summer day like? That’s a tall order, but  before we get too sentimental: Maybe it involves plenty of relaxation, some delicious iced coffee, and then a delicious summer beer or two to take the afternoon away. Perhaps, it also involves wearing your new favorite henley to enjoy it all the while. That’s where we’ll start today’s #OOTD — as we all know, even casual style situations demand only the best summer style essentials you can buy. Plus, an occasion like kicking back on your patio with your buddies, beer in hand & rock on the radio, is a chance to wear, well, whatever you want to wear. That being said, we’re raising the bar, starting with a rugged short-sleeve henley to keep you cool, followed in short order by Camp Shorts from Taylor Stitch, then finished off with classic Sperry sneakers. Throw in a tough field watch and some of your favorite tunes, then consider your day sorted out quite nicely. Plus, this still leaves plenty of time to grab an afternoon nap and catch that ballgame on TV later — no fancy outfit swap needed. It’s the small details in style that make an outfit, and it’s the little things in life that really matter, like enjoying a favorite brew wearing your favorite style essentials. Too sentimental for you? Too late! Read about the full look below.

Can’t you just taste the delightful flavor of that Funkwerks Saison? How can it get any better? Answer: Sipping on that beer while wearing  your new favorite henley, naturally. As we all know, a rugged short-sleeve henley is almost a ridiculously easy way to look great, thanks to its sporting roots and modern-day appeal. It’s all about going beyond casual gym shorts and sandals, and turning things up a notch — in an authentic way, of course. This casual #OOTD is primed for summer relaxation at home or during a weekend way, helped along by durable Taylor Stitch shorts and of course, iconic men’s sneakers made for hours upon hours of warm-weather style (plus, they look even better with a bit of dirt on ’em).

A seasonally friendly beer should make it easy to enjoy the sun without overdoing it, and naturally, you’ll be staying on time with a tough field watch from VAER Watches that can handle some grilling, some beer-sipping, and maybe even a light game of catch. Lest we forget, a portable speaker is really critical here — great beer calls for great music, and a day in the sun also calls for stylish sunglasses from Sunski (remember, these are perhaps the most affordable sunglasses you’re apt to find on a given day, so don’t worry about getting ’em a bit dinged up). To top things off, throw on a classic ballcap, then get ready for one heck of a stylish, laidback summer day. That’s all there is to it.

Start with classic white sneakers, then add more casual pieces this summer.

The amazing thing about a pair of sneakers — in fact, your new favorite sneakers — is the variety of ways in which they can be worn, even just beyond this #OOTD. Here, as we mentioned, we’re keeping things much more casual with a denim shirt and of course, an essential, made-in-America T-shirt from Huckberry. Pieces like slim, lightweight chinos give this ensemble a bit of a more polished feel, as at ease strolling around the park as when worn to your favorite coffee shop — similarly, a pair of the best men’s sunglassses add some polish & instant cool. This outfit is casual but subtly stylish, all the better when it comes time to leave your house for the day (or early evening). And if you fancy loading up your laptop and getting some work done on the weekends, well, a durable Filson bag fits right in with the more rugged confines of this look. You can also never go wrong with a stylish leather watch — especially if you’re headed to a BBQ or rooftop happy hour. If you’re sensing a theme here, it’s that classic white sneakers can be worn nearly any way you can dream up. Be sure to use some Duke Cannon face lotion to keep your skin sharp and at its best, too. Again, classic white sneakers really don’t mess around when it comes time to step out in style. Have any thoughts on this ensemble? Let me know on Twitter. Thanks for reading!
