The Friday Read: Fourth of July 2016 Edition

We’ve reached another great summer long weekend — the Fourth of July! It’s about being thankful for our freedoms above all else, but it’s also a welcome vacation and a chance to get together with family and friends — hopefully in style. So, in true Style Guide fashion, today’s Friday Read is all about the holiday. It was a busy week in preparation for some much-needed time off — I even covered the best gear to wear for the holiday over at The Manual. Perhaps you had a busy week and are also looking forward to hitting the road, or at least enjoying some much-needed downtime. To mark a special occasion like the Fourth of July, it can be nice to kick back with a special cocktail — even if you’re a big craft beer fan, like myself. It’s a treat to enjoy a beverage that’s well-made and nuanced, like a lot of the finer things in life (especially #menswear). So it’s with that in mind that we’re giving you a holiday-centric drink option from the team at Johnnie-O — they sure do know how to make ’em, and if you caught my Masters 2016 cocktail post, you know that quite well. Check out the recipe below, plus a wearing suggestion from the brand, and read on for a few more Fourth of July weekend style tips.

 The Red Hot American Summer Drink

The Ingredients:

  •  1.5 shots of rum — the folks at Johnnie-O prefer Ballast Point Three Sheets California Small Batch White Rum
  •  1 sliced lime
  • 1/4 ginger beer
  • Cayenne pepper
  •  1 sliced jalapeño
The Process:
  • Place 2 lime wedges in a sturdy glass, using a muddler to crush the lime.
  • Fill the glass almost to the top with ice.
  • Pour the rum over the ice, and fill the glass with ginger beer.
  • Sprinkle cayenne to taste, and garnish with jalapeño.
  • Enjoy!

While it requires some ingredient-wrangling, the process of making and enjoying a great drink can be a lot like the pursuit of finding style essentials: Worth the wait. Right? Right. Now, if you’re looking for more menswear to complement your weekend, grab a pair of swim trunks from Johnnie-O, like the 90H20 Surf Shorts pictured above. But wait, there’s more! They’ve got an assortment of everyday carry essentials, from a tote to a backpack, all with insulated liners built in to keep drinks cool (and the fact that they’re made from recycled PET materials is another positive).

It seems as if just yesterday we were talking about what to wear on Memorial Day — and here we are, now talking about what to wear on the 4th of July. Time flies, right?? The 4th of July is often a sort of “style perfect storm” of sorts — it’s likely pretty hot out, there’s the potential to be moving from one activity to the next (swimming at the beach followed by patio drinks, anyone?) and  you very well might have to travel just to do all that. So, first things first — cover off on that stylish weekender bag to get you where you’re going. Maybe fill it with some nice men’s grooming products, too? Now that that’s taken care of, we’ll head onto the below outfit suggestion — it’s all about staying cool and stylish, versatile and ready for anything. So, $72 isn’t exactly the cheapest T-shirt on the market. But when you’re going to be rocking a T-shirt in place of a slim polo, you’d better grab one that’s eye-catching, slim-fitting and very well-made. It’s definitely an aspirational sort of purchase, but if you’re able to get your hands one, your wardrobe would be all the better. The indigo dye (a nod to the U.S.A!) is rich and very unique, for one. Plus, it’s actually made in America — something that’s still to be applauded in the menswear manufacturing game. Toss on a lightweight jacket if it gets breezy, but know that this tee has you set in style in the meantime.

We’re going with the ever-versatile JackThreads Slim Chino here, because it always pays to have a crisp pair of khaki chinos on hand, no matter the style situation. These chinos would work for travel style (whether it’s across the country or just across town), and with a little care, you could probably wear them again in the same weekend — again, watch out as you man the grill. The price is stellar, the fit should be flattering for lots of guys out there, and you can rock that color for months at a time.

What’s more American than khaki chinos and an indigo tee? A great pair of lifestyle sneakers from an American original, that’s what. Pairing multiple shades of blue might seem like a risky style move at first, but it’s one that pays off when you consider the rich navy’s contrast against the lighter indigo dye. The blue-and-white color is a nice, subtle style nod to the holiday, and having checked out a pair of Brooks Heritage Chariot Sneakers myself, I can tell you they’re every bit as comfortable as the brand’s first-class running shoes — with more style points, too. They work well with the casual chinos, yet you could still class up this combo with a crisp chambray shirt if need be.

Although these no-show socks are designed to, well, not show, it’s still wise to grab a pair that incorporates seasonal colors and a good deal of comfort. You can read more about these guys in my post on classic no-show socks for summer, but rest assured that Pair of Thieves makes socks that are comfortable, well-fitting and stylish with a bit of an attitude. Even if not many people see your socks, that’s definitely something they’ve got going for them; and at that price, you can pick up a few pairs without straining your bank account too much.

When packing for travel (or dressing everyday), it can be a bit of a practice to take care of things right down to the last detail. In this instance, that means not forgoing a  belt. But we’re not just using any ole’ number to hold up those slim khaki chinos — this J. Crew Factory belt combines some nautical vibes (the D-ring loop and double-striping) with a textured white cotton that looks all kinds of right up against the lighter blue shirt and navy sneakers. It’s simple style touches that make a big difference, and if you’re into that, here’s a spring and summer belt for you.

This superb and stylish watch-and-leather strap combo, sold via the great folks at Huckberry, definitely gets a lot of things right on the dual style-and-functionality front. For one, the watch plays off the classic Timex Weekender by adding in a few more bells and whistles (not a ton, though). For another, the combination of a black dial with a rich brown leather Horween strap is a handsome combination that stands out stylishly with a plain pocket tee and dark blue denim during the rest of the summer. That means in this outfit, it’s a downright stunning accessory.

If you couldn’t just by looking at ’em, the Knockaround Fort Knox Polarized Sunglasses pack a heck of a lot of style into one exceptionally well-priced package. It’s perhaps one of the accessories for which Huckberry is so well-known; they’re definitely not your average pair of shades, that’s for sure. The lenses are polarized, and the frames are injection-molded for extra durability — that’s exactly why they’re worth quite a lot more than roughly $30. While they didn’t make this site’s list of the best men’s sunglasses to buy for summer, they’re a very worthy honorable mention, and quite the pair to bring with you for the 4th of July.

Meeting such a patriotic holiday in style is a lot like dressing for any other holiday, be it St. Patrick’s Day or Christmas. That means nodding to the time of year — in this instance, mixing some red and blue — while working in both some more forward moves (like rolled chinos) and timeless classics (like a stylish leather watch). Crisp sneakers and durable shades work to finish it all off, too. Of course, this time of year is about more than what you wear — it’s also about taking time with family and friends and being thankful for this great country we live in. However you do that, I salute you and wish you the best in style.

#OOTD: How to Wear A Chambray Blazer

Editor’s note: You’ve surely seen this hashtag lots of different places, including on Instagram. But how does that carry over to real life? The #OOTD will take one great item and put together a versatile, stylish outfit around it. Look for past features here.

When the heat waves start to roll in, it can be a tricky time to try and dress well. There’s that ever-difficult balance between keeping your cool and looking cool that requires you mix things up a bit. In the case of today’s post, that means we’re talking how to wear a chambray blazer. It’s the lightweight alternative to the classic navy blazer, what with a rougher, more visually interesting texture and (usually) less internal construction. That means it looks more natural when paired with other casual menswear pieces, such as a simple T-shirt and twill pants. It’s a get-up that nods toward a trend (that would be the menswear world getting more and more casual by the day), yet you still look crisp and put-together. As you’ll see with the below #OOTD, it’s a look you could even pull off as you dress for summer travel.  So with that being said, get to reading below. The Blazer: JackThreads Chambray Blazer, $79: A chambray blazer for just $79? Believe it. Slim, stylish and well-made, from a brand that just gets things done.

The T-shirt: Bourbon and Blue Surfcomber Heathered Red Stripe Tee, $55: If you’re going to rock a tee under a blazer, it’s best to pick up one that’s comfortable, well-made and trim-fitting; warm weather stripes don’t hurt, either.

The Pants: Old Navy Ultimate Slim-Fit Khakis, $29: While the color of the chinos in that particular picture is lighter than the pair on Old Navy’s site, the principle remains the same — slim khakis fall in line with that trim blazer and tee, and can be easily rolled to show off those sneakers.

The Sneakers: GREATS Pronto in Cadet, $199: GREATS does, well, a great job at producing versatile, comfortable sneakers that are easy to wear with high-low style combos  like a blazer and tee (Italian manufacturing just does that).

The Socks: J. Crew Anchor No-show Socks, $10: Stylish no-show socks are an absolute summer must, and these add another subtle, nautical touch to the outfit while keeping your feet cool.

The Belt: J. Crew Factory Double-striped Webbing Belt, $14.50: As much as it’s popped up in a few recent #OOTD posts (including this post on how to wear a short-sleeve shirt), it’s a highly versatile casual belt that adds some nice color to this ensemble.

The Watch: Timex Weekender Fairfield, $75: Timex watches are as solid as they get, and this particular timepiece is suitably refined enough to heighten that blazer-and-tee combo just a bit.

The Accessory: Cambridge Satchel Oxblood iPhone Case, $32: So not everyone still has an iPhone (just me?), but regardless of what phone you’ve got, it’d be a neat touch to finish off your everyday with a rich leather phone case.

Does that check all the boxes of dressing sharply in warm weather? Well, mostly. If you feel a tee is too casual, you could always swap in an essential chambray shirt or a classic blue Oxford. But the best part about pairing a tee with a chambray blazer is the combination of effortless style and comfort it gives you. It’s an on-the-go style move that meets the warm weather while looking cool and sharp. Plus, it works well when paired with a classic set of navy sneakers — a more comfortable answer to brown leather wingtips, for starters. And crisp accessories, like a lux leather phone case and a dependable watch, are going to be by your side (and on your wrist) for plenty of outfits in the future. Even starting gradually (swapping out denim for twill pants and upgrading to a lighter chambray blazer) can be a step in the right direction. Still unsure? The Product Review: Owen & Fred Voyager Waxed Weekender

As luck would have it, it’s been quite some time since our last menswear product review here at The Style Guide. They were a fixture on this here #menswear blog for quite some time, and we’re back today with a review of the Owen & Fred Voyager Waxed Weekender. Past reviews have showcased a range of product, from an essential chambray shirt to a pair of classic chukka boots and beyond. Well, here’s another one — and just in time for summer travel season.  In fact, traveling in style could get a whole lot easier if you snag a durable, essential and stylish men’s weekender bag — perhaps one a heck of a lot like the option you see at the top of the page. Yes indeed, this bag has quickly become a big-time favorite at The Style Guide, and it’s accompanied me on a stylish trip to upstate New York, as well as a recent long weekend in Washington, D.C. (thanks to the brand sending it along for testing). Would I recommend picking one up the next time you hit the road? Absolutely. Why’s that? Read on.

Over time, the excellent men’s lifestyle and design brand Owen & Fred has won me over in a big, big way. They’ve been kind enough to participate in a few Reader Giveaways and provide this site with product for review, and I’ve been a fan of their approach to design even before that. They stock an essential selection of, well, essentials for the discerning guy — be it a sturdy brass bottle opener (a favorite on my Instagram) or larger pieces, like a durable canvas laundry bag (unfortunately sold out). The full product assortment is pretty extensive, yet all designed with refinement and style in mind, and that goes for everything from its shaving kits to intricate wall art. It’s with that approach — great design and quality first — that they’ve crafted the Voyager Waxed Weekender, and it certainly shows. In every situation, from those weekend trips to hopping around NYC, it’s performed very well, and I think that trend will certainly continue.

The specs are impressive and worth noting, for starters. The bag’s tough, rugged and versatile foundation starts with Martexin Original waxed canvas in an eye-catching shade of Army Green. It’s a different look and feel than the typical weekender bag, as that waxed canvas already has broken in beautifully during the production process. (If, on the other hand, you prefer a more luxurious bag, perhaps check out the last option in this site’s post on the best men’s weekender bags). But in this humble style writer’s opinion, that broken-in styling and feel really is a tremendous attribute in terms of looks. That also means the waxed canvas is more pliable than it is stiff, and that’s definitely a good thing if you tend to pack a lot of style essentials for the road, as I did as recently as a Memorial Day trip to upstate New York.

That’s yet another box that can be checked off when it comes to the Voyager Waxed Weekender — it’s roomy and comfortably fits two-three pairs of shoes, plus a weekend’s worth of #menswear gear. In the case of yours truly, that means versatile pieces like a slim chambray shirt, dark denim, brown leather chukka boots and indigo sneakers, for example. In comparison to my Navali Stowaway Weekender, it’s got enough room for about a day’s worth of clothes more (that is, an extra set of chinos or denim, plus a shirt and shoes). What all this boils down to are the bag’s dimensions — 22 inches in length and 12 inches in diameter.

Aside from its plentiful space (including two interior zipper pockets),  the bag is finished off with sturdy zippers and brass hardware that shows no signs of stress or giving way. The tightweave (removable) shoulder strap is fairly comfortable, although perhaps some leather reinforcement could be added (that could just be me being accustomed to my Satchel & Page Slim Mailbag, however). Speaking of leather — let’s talk about the detailing on this bag. The 9oz. harness leather straps that finish off the Voyager Waxed Weekender  on the handles and at the strap are coming at you via Wickett & Craig , one of the oldest tanneries in the country.
END. Clothing
That attention to detail shows, as these handles are soft and supple, yet sturdy enough to support a fully-packed bag. They’re also rich in color and contrast nicely with the waxed Army Green canvas (although this bag is also available in Charcoal). And down onto the navy cotton twill interior, this bag is something else. It’s a work of art — practically — that should carry everything you need for a stylish weekend away and beyond. It’s got a rugged-refined appeal that’s unique, eye-catching and classic, all at once. Whether you carry it alongside slim stone chinos and an indigo shirt, or stylish summer shorts and a pocket tee, it’s going to add plenty of practicality, function and classic style to all your summer adventures.

From time to time, nailing the right seasonal style can feel a bit overwhelming. After all, searching for and building off style upgrades isn’t easy. That extends to the little details (as your humble writer so often mentions), and that includes even times when you might feel a bit off-duty. In the case of hot summer weather, that means your swimsuit. Like a slim T-shirt or a nice pair of shorts, it’s a place that you shouldn’t slack off. Luckily, swimwear has come under the spotlight a lot in recent years, thanks to stylish guys like James Bond himself rocking designer swim trunks (007 body not included). However, my fellow #menswear fan, you don’t have to go that fancy — or that expensive — to get yourself set with essential beach gear. There are swim trunks that strike the right vibe between casual and classy, and a lot of them look more like tailored shorts than in years past. For days when you might hop on a boat and then hop off for a round (or two, or three) at the dockside bar, that’s critical. From its innovative new TryOuts program to the fact that it stocks a plethora of style essentials — from a spring field coat to the stylish swim trunks seen here, they consistently get a lot of things right. These are cut slimmer than normal and should hit about mid-thigh for most of us fellas, which provides a nice, tailored look. The Dress Blues color is versatile enough that these look more like shorts than anything else — see the intro paragraph for how versatile that makes ’em.

Our second pick here is quite the bump up in price, but definitely worth the investment. In fact, investing in a pair of swim trunks cut in a tailored fit is about the best thing you can do if you want to push yourself to upgrade the rest of your outfit. That is to say, good-bye ratty tank top, hello crisp white polo (as seen in this style suggestion). The nice thing about these trunks is that they’re cut with a 9-inch inseam; while that might be too long for some of us, that’ll hit the spot for others. Bonobos also stocks a wide range of other swimwear options, from board shorts to trunks in a range of lengths, so there’s something for everyone.

Ahh, yes. Here we are — a premium swim short that gives you a crisp, tailored look, yet doesn’t break the bank (compared to the Orlebar Brown trunks sported by Daniel Craig’s Bond). It’s fitting, then, that Sunspel was commissioned in 2011 to do up their own recreation of Sean Connery’s swim trunks as James Bond. The result is a sharp, lean and tailored pair of swim shorts with a nifty front button pocket and a super-clean waist (not a drawstring in sight — not that drawstrings are bad). The cost of these Sunspel Swim Shorts will set you back as much as the Bonobos pair above, so why not dive in?

Man, $88 sure is a popular price when it comes to swim trunks, right? For those of us who prefer a little more color and pattern in our trunks (yet won’t compromise on fit), here comes the Grayers Batik Print Swim Trunk, playing off a cool, vintage-inspired print that wouldn’t look out of place alongside a vintage ballcap. The 7-inch inseam is a solid length that again lends them a tailored look. Everything from a slim navy polo to a short-sleeve Oxford is going to look just right when matched with these swim trunks — nautical gear should be a bit fun, after all. Just don’t forget stylish sunglasses to top it all off.

If you prefer a more premium, minimal take on swimwear, the Zachary Prell St. Giorgio Swim Trunk is the pair for you. Italian fabric means these trunks cost more, but look all the better for it. They’ll again hit above the knee, giving you a bit more coverage if you’re taller. The teal blue color is totally spring and summer-appropriate, and makes them a bit more eye-catching and continental than other swim trunks out there. With a just-right length and versatile color (rock ’em with a white polo to start), they’ll be a reliable workhorse for plenty of trips to the beach.

While it can seem daunting at first to carry over great style principles from on land to in the water, it can definitely be done if you know where to start and you know what you’re looking for. Keep in mind classic, reliable brands like J. Crew for solid swimwear, and make sure you know your fit; not too long, not too short (ideally). If you follow the adage that great style is an investment, take your time picking out the right pair, and then wear them again and again with versatile style staples. Just as it’s, somewhat incredulously, nearly time to prep for dressing for a summer wedding so too, is it time to get ready for Memorial Day.  There’s often a lot on the table — maybe you’ve got to sort out what to wear when traveling, and more crucially, what accessories to pack for a stylish trip. Hopefully, you’ll be somewhere relaxing, enjoyable and near the water.  If that’s the case, we’ll be tackling the standard weekend-casual get-up below, and yet tweaking it for the #menswear fan more interested in looking good than taking it easy when it comes to style. In fact, it’s situations like these where you can set yourself apart (in a good way) by upping the ante just a bit. As it were, small style upgrades can even trickle down to your Memorial Day accessories (we’re talking things like leather coasters and a brass bottle opener from Owen & Fred, for example). But that’s another matter. The ensemble below is what you should keep in mind for a barbeque, an afternoon of patio beers, or just a relaxing day with family and friends around town — it’s got pieces you’ll recognize (the polo among them), but they’re all updated. Is that pricey for a polo? Heck yes, it is. But the SWIMS Getaria Polo is not your standard baggy golf polo, nor is it your spongy, heavy pique polo of days past. This right here is a crisp, slim-fitting, comfortable polo that looks sharp and wicks sweat thanks to the PrimaLoft fabric. Yet, it doesn’t look at all like a sport polo — for one, there’s no pesky logo. And for another, the fit is actually trim, with sleeves that hit about mid-bicep. If it does get chilly, you could always grab a stylish spring jacket, and if a less expensive polo is more your thing, you could always grab one from this site’s guide to the best spring polos.

Now, some slim chino shorts would work well here, too. And yes, we’re going with another pick from the same brand … why? Well, that’s easy. Memorial Day travel is sometimes all about packing light. And if you’re only taking a day trip or an overnight, you want to maximize space — and the Paloma Hybrid Chino is a ridiculously effective way to do that. They perform like a swim short and they’ve got an inner mesh lining, yet they’ve also got the peached surface of a chino short. And the front tab closure and tailored fit mean they wear like a regular pair of shorts. Take these into the water and onto the dockside patio with reckless abandon (or something like that). Oh, and if you need a belt when you hop out of the water, grab one with a nautical influence.

Just when you thought you’d sworn off boat shoes for good, the style comes roaring back — in a very, very good way. Jack Erwin’s new boat shoes are crisp and uniquely stylish, built on a loafer last for an elongated profile that’s far different from more classic styles. They’re available in Navy Leather, Slate Nubuck and the Caramel Nubuck you see here, and they feature a white rubber outsole for sleek styling (again, different than other boat shoes). The great thing is, these would also work just as well with navy chinos and a white Oxford at the office, and in this case, they’ll set you apart from other flip-flop wearing fellas.

So, while you very well might be in and out of the water this Memorial Day weekend, there’ll come a time when you need to slip on stylish shoes (like the Jack Erwin boat shoes above). And in keeping with those sleek shorts and sharp polo, you’re going to want a pair of socks that blends in seamlessly. Pair of Thieves uses designs that don’t look half-bad when worn on their own, and lucky for you and me both, this pair of socks slides nicely into shoes that are fit for the water or the walkway. Plus, the price is very agreeable. So agreeable, you just might be able to use the money you save for another beer.

The Watch: Timex Waterbury Dive Watch — $110

It’s not often you’ll find a pair of swim shorts that cost more than a watch, but that’s the case here — yet, you still get quality and durability for which Timex is known. This stainless steel Waterbury is part of the heritage line introduced by the brand to commemorate 160 years in business (yes, 160), and it should reliably do the job as far as dive watches go (although in that sense, it’s only water-resistant to 50 meters). Even still, it’s tough to beat the combo of price, looks and simple style that should fit right in alongside a refined-yet-casual ensemble.

The Hat: Bridge & Burn “B” Flat Wool Cap — $48

Although it’d be easy to throw on a simple athletic logo cap, we’re going for something a bit more stylish today. Bridge & Burn produces essentials that are timeless yet incorporate a rugged, somewhat outdoors-y flair. That’s the case with this neat wool cap, which features classic six-panel design and a simple, smart logo (and if your name happens to start with the letter B…). Like worsted wool found in four-season suits, the wool in this hat should be breathable and crucially, offer protection from the sun.

Did you think we forgot these guys? Not quite. If the solid good looks and very agreeable price are any indication, you’ll likely be seeing a lot of J. Crew’s new sunglasses around The Style Guide in the coming weeks and months (including in this site’s recent summer sunglasses guide). The Jack from J. Crew is simple, straightforward and classic in nature, with some brighter blue lenses to amp things up a bit. The frame shape should definitely work with lots of face types, and the color goes nicely with grey chino shorts, white polo and caramel nubuck boat shoes. Not a bad way to finish things off, ehh?

The above outfit certainly doesn’t incorporate a lot of bold prints, crazy styles or even unexpected swerves — yet it’s the colors and textures, from the unexpected boat shoes to the hybrid shorts and deceptively performance-ready polo, that make all the difference. Essentials like a stainless steel watch and aviator sunglasses are going to effectively get the job done no matter where you go. And if you pair these pieces with other must-haves — say, a cool denim tote bag or a nice leather lanyard — you’re going to be set in matters of style for this trip and several to come.

So, are you just about set with your spring style wish list? Yes? No? Maybe? The great thing about keeping a diligent eye on the #menswear community is that it’s always neat to see how brands are taking more traditional silhouettes and pieces — like that of the classic navy blazer — and turning them on their head from time to time. Take the Grayers Exmouth Nylon Blazer, part of a solid line of spring outerwear from the brand. It’s the ideal example of the ways in which brands are introducing products that meet the active lifestyles of lots of customers — and this piece looks a heck of a lot better than some other active, athleisure-inspired looks. That’s because it retains the traditional features of the blazer, right down to the flap patch pockets, three-button front and space for your pocket square, and yet, it’s crafted from lightweight nylon. It’s part rain jacket, part blazer and would stylishly complement just any outfit you can think of — including some of the picks on this Spring Style Essentials list. In fact, it’s got something else on other, more classic blazers. And should it happen to rain or get breezy this spring, you’re more than covered there. Have I mentioned that it can be packed into its own drawstring pouch? Because it can do that, too. It’s especially suited for travel, be it by train, plane or automobile (sorry, had to). The lightweight nylon should prove comfortable for moving inside and outside, and it would smartly finish off even something as simple as a natural pocket tee and slim khaki chinos. Plus, throw in some sharp suede derbys and you’ve got a look that’s both office and commute-ready. And it would look particularly sharp with a classic white Oxford, yet again, it’s got the functionality of a rain jacket. The price is pretty agreeable considering you get two jackets for the price of one, and it’s just the right piece of outerwear to rock through spring, into summer and even into early fall when layered right. Spring has, to this point, presented all kinds of online shopping to be done, from picking up stylish suede chukkas to lusting after the best spring sneakers and short-sleeve shirts. But what about those other finishing touches? Particularly one that just might be the  most important part of your everyday carry, whether you’re traveling abroad or zipping down the street. I’ll give you a hint — you sure as heck won’t need ’em when it rains! Indeed, we’re talking effective, stylish sunglasses for the rest of spring and all summer. It’s virtually never too late to buy a pair — heck, grab the right frame (classic in shape and with lenses that aren’t too crazy) and you’ll want to wear them even with it’s cloudy. They’re a nice thing to have when the snow gets too reflective for those of us in colder climes, as well. So, for matters of style, there’s a lot at stake. Grab one of the pairs listed below — just try not to lose ’em at the gas station.

The brand’s quest to take over the wardrobes of discerning #menswear fans everywhere continues at a pretty rapid clip, and J. Crew’s new sunglasses definitely make it easy to become a fan. The Jack is a classic aviator style with crisp blue lenses, a stainless steel frame and a 52mm lens diameter that should work for most face shapes. These could be reliably dressed up with a well-tailored suit, and they’d add a classic American feel to a short-sleeve henley.

Do you sense a theme here as far as versatile sunglasses go? Warby Parker excels at producing modern designs that are still wearable for all sorts of face shapes, including this classic aviator style. The crucial part about that is you get them without the Bond-esque price tag — and with the option to add in prescription lenses if you so choose.

If you don’t fancy yourself rocking a pair of aviator shades, perhaps reach for something that’s a bit more unique but still versatile in terms of style. That would be the Millbrook from Steven Alan Optical, the premium eyewear offshoot of American menswear brand Steven Alan. The great part about these shades is that they come without a premium price tag (as far as other, higher-end options are concerned). The Italian acetate used to make these is about as good as it gets, and the rose gold detailing is a slightly retro touch.

It practically wouldn’t be a sunglasses roundup if Ray-Ban wasn’t included (or at least considered) for this list — right?While some aren’t partial to the logo they place on one lens of seemingly all their models, the Ray-Ban Wayfarer has stood the test of time (and experienced a style resurgence) in recent years because it fits tons of different face shapes and just looks downright cool in the process. The price isn’t backbreaking, and the style works with a classic navy suit now or as a complement to a shawl cardigan (much) later on in the year.

While it’s well and good to consider classic styles like the aviator and the Wayfarer in your sunglass search, sometimes, you want a frame shape that’s a bit different. We’re not talking electric blue lenses or something out of the 70s, just a bit more distinctive. The Sunday Somewhere Maximus is a tough, strong frame with a slightly wider lens diameter. It’s a step up in price from the other options on this list, but it exudes effortless cool — these are sunglasses well-suited for, well, a suit.

Choosing sunglasses can definitely be a rather tricky process. Namely, it pays to try on styles in a store before picking the perfect pair. Try-on programs done by the likes of Warby Parker are really helpful in easing the stress of that process — and with a lot of sunny days hopefully ahead, being efficient with that cash is going to be key (and hopefully, leave some leftover funds for a few summer brews). If you want to reach for a classic American style, pick up a pair on the relative cheap from Randolph Engineering (a past Style Pick of the Week feature). Heck it’s even tougher to beat something from the American Optical line of sunglasses. But again, finding the right frame shape and the right price are paramount. When it’s hot out, there’s the temptation to stray from dressing well and move towards dressing more basic – less layers equals less heat, right? As with any pursuit though, hot weather shouldn’t equal less attention to detail – and it doesn’t have to mean that. Certain staples can carry you through the season while still keeping you looking good.

Starting up top, while a stylish T-shirt isn’t  a problem in and of itself, on some occasions a polo looks more crisp – and unlike a T-shirt, it can work more readily on its own at the office, too. You could also put forth a more fashion-forward take on the T-shirt though, as style legend (and Esquire Fashion Director) Nick Sullivan does here.  It’s a look that simultaneously casual and cool, but not sloppy in the slightest  (the key is the fit of the blazer, along with its more rumpled texture – a jacket from this list might do the trick while also working in spring and even fall if layered correctly).

Those who prefer a more tailored look would be wise to reach for a linen buttondown, something with some cooling texture but in the traditional shirt structure  – Stock Manufacturing Co.’s shirts are made in America and hit the mark perfectly (a price is paid for that quality, though). On the budget end of things, the versatile Oxford-cloth button down can be worn with almost anything and can be picked up for a positive steal from Uniqlo, although sizing is somewhat scattered at this point.

And in the summer months as well as well as the rest of the year, the ever-versatile chino is your friend – traditional dress pants here could be a little too insulating if you need to be out and moving. If a dress pant is unavoidable, plenty of brands stock suit separates that combine lighter colors and textures with a slimmer cut (J. Crew’s Bowery line accomplishes this task phenomenally). Shorts worn in a more daring fashion are also on the table for the everyday now as well – believe it or not! Check out ways to style this bolder move here.

If you simply can’t put away dark denim and don’t mind the heat, a classic pair in a straight or slim cut with a dark wash is never out of the question, although light-wash jeans still have business-casual potential as evidenced by this look here.  Footwear is another area that’s going to really make or break both the versatility and the overall “cooling” factor of an outfit. Think leather loafers, crisp white sneakers or even runner-style sneakers in a neutral color. Any of those three options could work seamlessly with slim chinos and a polo, or a well-fitted T-shirt and blazer combo.

And because socks are really a prerequisite for extending the life of your shoes, a set of stylish no-show socks from a brand like Richer Poorer could work exceptionally well – the brand’s no-shows in particular are well-priced, well-designed and very comfortable. Wearing no-show socks with dress shoes is a move that’s oft-debated, but if the shoe is comfortable in that instance and the move isn’t too attention-grabbing,  it could absolutely work (wearing that look to a boardroom meeting might not go over too well though, the thought goes!).

Unlike socks, other accessories are dependent on the situation to some degree – but keepings minimal and crisp with a trim leather watch is always flattering to any pared-down look  (I.e. the T-shirt and blazer combo mentioned here).  In sportier situations though, a NATO strap is both functional and can still be swapped without too much work into a shinier steel dive watch dial or even that leather dress watch.

More casual belts are going to be your friend as well – think something with the same texture as a fall belt, like this functional and inexpensive braided leather option  from  Target, or this cotton braided belt from J. Crew Factory. A two-sided reversible belt could also pull double duty if a middle-of-the-road option is needed.

Ultimately when it comes to summer style, it’s a matter of choice –make the choice to keep things tailored, crisp and put-together despite the heat, and a world of style possibilities will open up from there. Crucially, items that work throughout the year – that slim T-shirt under sweaters in the winter, those chinos during transition times in the fall – can still work here when mixed the right way.
