The Friday Read: Danner’s New Boots, the Best Oktoberfest Beers and Taylor Stitch Outerwear

The perfect fall weekend boots from Danner? Very nearly!

My friends, we’ve reached the end of another work week (at least, I hope that’s the case for you). And speaking of stepping into a new season, the rugged, versatile Danner Vertigo 917 Boots as showcased above could just be the perfect new addition to your closet. Danner makes all of its footwear in the U.S.A. with prime attention to detail, making the above pair some of the best leather boots (period!) that you can snag for fall. Now that we’ve covered off on the best boots for the weekend, what say we dive into something like … Brooklyn’s best new coffee shop? I’ve had the pleasure recently of checking out Sweetwaters Coffee & Tea in Brooklyn’s idyllic Park Slope neighborhood (as you might have seen on my Instagram), and I’m certainly a new fan! If ever you get to the borough, I can’t recommend you visit this spot enough. It’s a welcome addition to the Brooklyn coffee scene, seeing as the company was founded in my home state of Michigan, and it’ll be a crucial weekend stop for me tomorrow, too. As for the rest of my weekend, I’ll be taking in some college football action by my Michigan State Spartans, and enjoying a cold fall beer at Threes Brewing. How about you? Feel free to check in with me in the comments below!

  • Fall is well and truly here — at least, it’ll officially be here next week on the calendar (and hopefully soon thereafter in terms of the weather). With that in mind, I put the best flannel shirts to the test for GearMoose, and believe you me, there are some stellar options when it comes to fall’s perfect shirt. Layer it up with your favorite henley and tough camp pants, then get out there & get to work.
  • Speaking of essential fall gear, I sure do hope you moved quickly to pre-fund the excellent Taylor Stitch Mechanic Jacket. Crafted from the brand’s famed Boss Duck fabric, it’s a hard-wearing jacket that should arrive just in time for fall — read my full scoop on the best new fall jacket over at GearMoose, naturally.
  • Let’s turn once again toward this here blog, and our ongoing #OOTD series. There’s still time for you to get plenty of wear out of your favorite denim jacket — you just need to layer it up accordingly, and that’s why I recently covered how to wear a denim jacket for fall. There’s no time to waste, my friends.
  • And because it wouldn’t be a fall weekend without a little craft beer action, I rounded up the best Oktoberfest beers to enjoy as we move into this prime, prime season for hops-inclined refreshment. Again, I point you toward GearMoose for that briefing — cheers to Friday!

So, for old’s time sake, let’s close out today’s Friday Read with one last helpful #menswear reminder before the weekend — I’ll point you back to The Style Guide, and my take on the best hooded sweatshirt for fall. It’s just that good … believe me. OK, that’s all I’ve got today, folks. Enjoy the weekend!

The Friday Read: The Taylor Stitch Yosemite Shirt, New Whiskey and the Best New Leather Watch

You’ll be the talk of the town if you pick up this shirt in advance of the weekend.

There’s no question about it, the best flannel shirt for fall — and particularly for an early fall weekend — has got to be the rugged, purely essential Taylor Stitch Yosemite Shirt. It’s your new favorite shirt, it doubles as a rugged overshirt, and you can style it plenty of different ways. In short, just know that this is the best men’s shirt for a fall weekend … like this one that’s on the horizon right now! I always love my fall weekends in Brooklyn, from the idllyic confines of Prospect Park to enjoying a rich IPA or crisp Oktoberfest at choice Brooklyn haunts like Gold Star Beer Counter. I’m still waiting on the weather to shift to slightly colder temperatures, but when it does, Taylor Stitch is what I’ll be wearing as I enjoy my favorite beers.

And on tap for me this weekend elsewhere? Some Michigan State football, to be sure, plus preparing plenty of fall style content for the blog and of course, my Instagram. It’s always nice to be able to take some time to relax after travel, too. Again, if you follow me on Instagram, you perhaps saw that I was in Denver last weekend to see my favorite band, indie rock heroes The National! The city is an exceptional one, blending a love of the outdoors with stunning beauty and a host of quirky, cool spots, like My Brother’s Bar (the oldest bar in Denver!) and pioneering Denver brewery Great Divide Brewing. Elsewhere, I also enjoyed a highly affordable and seriously tasty breakfast at Sam’s No. 3 on Sunday to close out my trip, and I also visited the minimal and modern menswear shop Steadbrook — and of course, CREMA provided crucial refreshment & energy throughout. Speaking of great gear, it was also a treat to check out the menswear & gear market expo American Field on Sunday! It’s a yearly traveling showcase highlighting American-made brands (like Topo Designs, a personal favorite!), complete with plenty of craft beer and coffee to test out from local markets (Denver, in this case!). AF heads to Brooklyn this November, too. Not bad at all. Have you been to Denver? What’s next on your radar in terms of trips? Oh, and I almost forgot — let’s get to the Friday Read below!

  • As we shift our attention toward fall and style that’s ever-so-slightly rugged, it would behoove you to reach for a rugged leather watch that can stand up to the rich textures and fabrics of your fall style essentials. To wit: I covered the Dango TK-01 Trek Watch, a heck of a tough leather watch to bring you into the best season for menswear. Check it out at GearMoose.
  • Speaking of fall essentials, one could argue that the best new whiskey is a fine fall essential to have on hand — and in that regard, it was a pleasure to dive right in and cover the 1792 Aged Twelve Years Bourbon for GearMoose. It’s a pleasing fall sipper that’ll warm you up on many a chilly fall or winter night.
  • And let’s close things out today with more essential, seasonal gear from Taylor Stitch — namely, the rugged Taylor Stitch Camp Pants are exactly what the doctor ordered if you’ve got to go off-trail, get upstate or simply suit up in rugged fashion for a chilly tailgate. Don’t sleep on these, folks!

OK, my friends — we’ve called out this handy, seasonal #OOTD in the past, but it’s worth calling attention to again. Wondering how to dress for early fall? Of course you are — that #OOTD as mentioned above can help, guaranteed. Alright, that’s a wrap on the start of this early fall weekend — cheers!

#OOTD: How to Wear a Denim Jacket This Fall

If the throes of summer strike you as a more fitting time to wear a stylish denim jacket — namely, the rugged denim jacket from Taylor Stitch that we’ll be discussing today — then, it’s time to rethink your approach to early fall style. The best denim jacket can serve as a stylish blazer replacement or a different piece of outerwear in lieu of a leather jacket — it’s both versatile and casual, able to provide warmth in the early fall chill and still ready to be taken off at a moment’s notice if temperatures pick up unexpectedly. And with all that being said, the right accessories make all the difference. When seeking casual fall style essentials to wear to your favorite beer bar or to a tailgate or a weekend brunch, it’s best to keep it simple, stylish and rugged. Hence, you’ll notice a classic henley, plus a pair of equally classic chinos from Flint and Tinder that work any time of year — not just during early fall. Naturally, your everyday carry should stay on-point, too; that’s where the best leather watch comes into play. It’s the type of timepiece that’ll stand out at the bar and look great no matter where you take it. And again, the thing is, the best denim jacket can take you a lot of different places all season long (especially when layered up accordingly). The choice is all yours — let’s get to work.

A stylish, transitional, rugged way to wear a denim jacket — guaranteed.

  • The Denim Jacket: Taylor Stitch Long Haul Jacket in 24-Month Wash, $188 — Yes, you can indeed wear a denim jacket in a lighter wash as it gets colder — just layer this rugged denim jacket from Taylor Stitch accordingly.
  • The Henley: Flint and Tinder Heavy Slub Henley, $58 — Seeing as it’s fall and all, well, we’re here to tell you that you need a seriously classic henley. It’s the perfect pairing with your rugged denim jacket, namely.
  • The Chinos: Flint and Tinder Cool Chinos, $98 — Those classic chinos you wore all summer long can still work as we move through September — Flint and Tinder gets it right.
  • The Boots: Yogi Lucas Leather Moccasin Boots, $199 — You could easiy accessorize this outfit with any one of your favorite pairs of leather boots, but these rugged leather moc boots are the way to go.
  • The Watch: Zodiac Grandville Watch, $495 — The best leather watch to complement this outfit? It might just be the rugged Zodiac Grandville Watch, mixing in a bit of dressy style and rugged functionality.
  • The Grooming Essential: HaloSmile Whitening Kit, $59.99 — For as much attention as you put into things like classic chinos, well, your smile also deserves some upkeep. This handy teeth whitening kit is but one step to keeping your smile sharp, folks.
  • The Leather Wallet: Filson Bi-Fold Wallet, $100.98 — This rugged leather wallet from Filson is assuredly one you’ll use everyday — keep an eye on it, and you’ll have it for years to come.
  • The Everyday Bag: WP Standard Canvas Travel Bag, $298 — No matter what the day throws at you, it behooves you to haul around the best everyday bag you can get your hands on; we’ve featured this handsome WP Standard Canvas Travel Bag before, and it’s every bit as essential now.

As we often say here on the blog, it’s all about picking the right pieces around which to build an outfit, especially as temperatures grow chilly (slowly but surely) this fall. And crucially, a rugged denim jacket from Taylor Stitch is going to be the great equalizer when it comes to a versatile, casually rugged piece of outerwear this season. When you match it up with rugged leather moc boots and classic chinos, the major building blocks of your outfit are in place. This is an outfit that exudes casual cool without overdoing it — hence the inclusion of a laidback-yet-timeless Flint and Tinder henley. Taken all at once, this is the type of outfit that’s going to more than serve you well when it comes time to head out on a casual weekend coffee date or to grab your favorite craft beer (both pursuits I plan on indulging quite a bit this fall!). Of course, the small details also help set your #OOTD apart, so don’t leave behind your rugged leather wallet or that critically important, best everyday bag. Finish it all off with a winning smile via the HaloSmile kit, and you’ll both look AND feel your best. It’s as simple as that. Well, not quite. But you get the picture. Enjoy the imminent start of fall, my friends!

#OOTD: How to Wear Your New Favorite Jacket … Just About Anywhere

We might be on the cusp of Labor Day weekend — and today’s #OOTD can certainly function well in that setting, too — but it’s also prime time to look toward early fall. Critically, how to dress for early fall is something we’ve been driving home these past few weeks on The Style Guide, and today’s #OOTD is no different. To wit: We’re taking a rugged camo jacket (perfect for long weekend travel or as a casual, cool blazer replacement) and matching it up with the kind of men’s style essentials you’d be proud to wear any time of year (but especially as the weather gets chilly). Trust me: It could be your new favorite jacket. And what about the rest of this look? You’ll find the Taylor Stitch Heavy Bag Tee below, along with some of the best men’s pants for fall — the goal here is casually rugged style that works from the coffee shop to the open road (and maybe even your office, if you can get away with it). The focus is this: The right gear picks speak for themselves, so when wearing a more flashy camo jacket, you should tone down the rest of your #OOTD accordingly. And because we’re moving ever-so-slowly into fall, that means the introduction of rugged leather boots — the kind you wear to your favorite distillery or for a quick weekend hike. It’s all about gear that can go anywhere, so mix and match these picks as you please. Alright, without further ado … here we go.

The perfect combination of rugged and casual for Labor Day weekend & well into fall.

  • The Jacket: Taylor Stitch Ojai Jacket in Camo Wax, $198 — Here it is, your new favorite jacket. Consider it the perfect go-between layer for breezy early fall nights. This rugged camo jacket is both subtly stylish and distinct enough to work everywhere from a rock concert to a weekend brunch.
  • The Classic White Tee: Taylor Stitch Heavy Bag Tee, $45 — Now, is this a full-on white tee? Not quite. And that’s OK! The Taylor Stitch Heavy Bag Tee is A) Sustainably made and B) More durable than a thinner white tee — just what you need heading into September (and beyond).
  • The Pants: Proof Rover Pants, $98 — If it’s a pair of the best men’s pants for fall that you seek, then perhaps the oft-recommended Proof Rover Pants are your best bet. Sharp and stylish, yet easily paired up with one of the best white tees out there.
  • The Boots: Red Wing Heritage Weekender Chelsea Boots, $240 Stylish Chelsea boots that just so happen to be rugged and versatile? It’s possible thanks to these rugged leather boots — they’re also lightweight and not overly clunky.
  • The Watch: Jack Mason Diver Watch, $282.98 — You’ve got your rugged camo jacket, you’ve got your Red Wing Heritage boots … might as well throw on a classic dive watch as a complement to this #OOTD, ehh? Indeed!
  • The Grooming Essential: Saturdays NYC Clay Pomade, $24 — We’re leaving your stylish ballcap at home on the shelf in favor of a slick, sharp hairdo via the Saturdays NYC Clay Pomade, the latest grooming essential from one of your favorite brands.
  • The Everyday Bag: WP Standard Canvas Travel Bag, $215.98 — Need to hit the road in a hurry for a fall weekend trip? Need to haul a change of clothes to the office? This rugged shoulder brief is the way to go.
  • The Everyday Carry: Studebaker Workshop Keyholder, $58 — Never lose track of your keys again, no matter the style situation, with this crucial everyday carry upgrade.

OK, let’s recap it all, shall we? The goal here is transitional fall style that you can even make use of during Labor Day weekend. So, a rugged camo jacket from the good folks at Taylor Stitch takes care of business for breezy fall nights, as does the Taylor Stitch Heavy Bag Tee — a one-two combo that’s subtly stylish and eyecatching. Some of the best men’s pants for fall act as another reliable outfit anchor, with the type of fabric and cut that works for fall travel or a fall day on the job. And it’s always tough to go wrong with rugged leather boots, particularly the kind that feature tough suede and sleek-but-hardworking construction. To haul your daily essentials, grab  tough-as-nails, rugged shoulder brief, but not before you’ve done up your ‘do with the Saturdays NYC Clay Pomade — it’s an immediate hair upgrade that adds some refinement to this look. Don’t forgo your everyday carry, either. And last but not least: Be sure you’ve accessorized accordingly with a classic dive watch to round things out. Is this the way you’d style this #OOTD? You can always let me know on Twitter. Cheers!

Feel free to let me know your thoughts in the comments — thanks for reading!

Style Pick of the Week: Taylor Stitch Long Haul Jacket in Organic ’68 Selvage

A rugged, timeless denim jacket from my good friends at Taylor Stitch.

Another day, another Style Pick of the Week, and another spotlight shone on our friends at Taylor Stitch, a favorite of The Style Guide for years. They’re an especially relevant favorite today, too — it all comes down to the rugged style of the Taylor Stitch Long Haul Jacket. And this isn’t just any Long Haul Jacket, mind you — the brand’s much-loved take on the classic trucker jacket gets a serious upgrade by way of rugged, organic cotton in a timeless silhouette. The difference has always been in the details when it comes to everyone’s favorite menswear brand, and this edition of the Taylor Stitch Long Haul Jacket is no different.

Now, it might seem counterintuitive to be talking about a rugged denim jacket when temperatures are still asburdly hot elsehwere across the country — but it’ll cool off eventually, and when it does, the Taylor Stitch Long Haul Jacket will be right there when you need it. It’s part of the excellent, nearly-always-in-stock Taylor Stitch Essentials Collection, a murderer’s row of menswear essentials like chambray shirts, crisp Oxford shirts, and yes … the Taylor Stitch Long Haul Jacket.

SHOP: The Taylor Stitch Long Haul Jacket

A rugged denim trucker jacket made the right way by Taylor Stitch.

But what separates this particular jacket from a crowded field of seemingly similar denim jackets? Allow me. Namely, the difference starts again with the construction and fabrication of this jacket, making it a true must-buy. It’s made for the first time ever with 100 percent organic cotton from ISKO Mills, something Taylor Stitch called a “logistical challenge” … but a gamble that appears to have paid off in spades. Heck, the Taylor Stitch Long Haul Jacket even features a custom green selvage ID, a unique touch that true denimheads will appreciate.

Throw in the fact that it’s finished off with YKK copper doughnut buttons and rivets for an extremely sturdy wearing experience, and you’ve got a simply beautiful denim jacket to layer from early fall (eventually) and on into winter. Seriously, try out the Taylor Stitch Long Haul Jacket with a grey henley and olive chinos — throw on classic suede chukkas, then grab an Old Fashioned. Still think a denim jacket is only made for casual wearing occasions? Use it as a replacement for your navy blazer when worn with tan chinos and an Oxford shirt. Lest we forget, the Taylor Stitch Long Haul Jacket also functions as a handy travel jacket given the front handwarmer and button chest pockets. Again, you’ll be glad you bought this classic denim jacket at the right time (now!) before you really need it this fall.

#OOTD: A New Way to Wear A Stylish Short-Sleeve Shirt for Summer

Maybe you’ve got a very specific look in mind when it comes to a stylish short-sleeve shirt — and perhaps, it just so happens to be a look that’s not actually stylish (Think: Maybe the short-sleeve shirts your dad used to wear?). We’re stepping it up in a big way today for the rest of summer, introducing you to what could just be your favorite short-sleeve shirt — and it should come as no surprise that it comes from Taylor Stitch in a handsome indigo fabric. See, it’s already a major improvement from other short-sleeve shirts. The best short-sleeve shirts on the market actually offer more versatility than you think, giving you the option to wear them to a rooftop cocktail hour or even to the office on a casual Friday — that’s the case with the Taylor Stitch Jack Shirt as seen below, at least. It’s the same fit you know and love, done in a way that just works for summer (namely, the lack of fabric on your arms). And when you pair it with slim chinos from Flint and Tinder, plus a sleek pair of refined leather slip-ons, you’re looking at a shirt that’s seriously sharp — not sloppy (a la Dwight Schrute). We’re even mixing in a stylish leather dress watch for good measure. The whole #OOTD below is visually interesting and versatile, fitting for a weekend patio dinner or weeknight rooftop drinks — or, again, a day at the office (the Taylor Stitch Jack Shirt never fails). Rethink what you thought you knew about the short-sleeve shirt, then let’s get down to business.

Shop Mott & Bow Today! So, do you think you’ve found your favorite short-sleeve shirt quite yet? Or a new way to wear it? Hopefully — and ideally, it’ll pair up nicely with slim chinos from Flint and Tinder for a nice mix of high-low style. When you use a slim short-sleeve shirt in rich indigo fabric as the base of your outfit, you’re setting the tone quite nicely — again, this isn’t a short-sleeve shirt of years past. You’re also making it clear that things are different when it comes to your refined leather slip-ons — dressier than white canvas sneakers, more laidback and summer-friendly than lace-up leather brogues. The rest of your accessories should also set the tone for a summer cocktail hour or a weekend dinner, from your stylish leather dress watch to a pair of the best men’s sunglasses — yes, that’s right. The best. The key with this entire ensemble comes in sticking to your guns: Keeping things summer-friendly and casual, yet cool. Duke Cannon’s Solid Cologne is an underrated grooming essential to take this look to the next level, and the Bespoke Post Worn Box, with a handsome money clip, keeps things nice and streamlined. How else to close out this #OOTD? Why, with a pair of the Flint and Tinder Heritage Boxer Briefs as an essential basic. Looking forward to the rest of summer? I know I am.

Karl Strauss Boat Shoes Hazy IPA — Price Varies

A bright and sunny IPA with a friendly name and cool can design.

I have good news and I have bad news: The good news, first, is that this hazy IPA nails everything you’d want from the Hazy IPA “trend” (if you can call it that). It’s imminently crushable, with a summer-friendly name and a cool can design. However, it’s only available in California within the brewery’s distribution footprint. If you have a trip planned out there soon, look for it! Speaking of boat shoes …

Yuketen Ox Mocs — $300

The casual, dependable summer moccasins to wear any time happy hour rolls around.

Luminox Xcor Aerospace Pilot Professional Watch — $1,520

An investment-level watch that’s both incredibly expensive and incredibly worth the coin.

OK, is this tough Luminox timepiece truly the definition of an investment-level watch? Yes. Absolutely — but will you ever need to buy another rugged field watch again? No, sir.

Armor-Lux Breton Long-Sleeve Tee — $70

The breezy, casual, cool shirt to wear on a chilly summer night.

We’ve talked in the past about Armor-Lux and the brand’s certified iconic shirts — like the Armor-Lux Breton Long-Sleeve Tee, in fact. Wear this with tan chinos to a breezy beach bonfire.

Lisboa Francisco Brushed Oxford — $118

A new summer shirt that’s destined to become a go-to.
