#OOTD: A New Way to Wear A Stylish Short-Sleeve Shirt for Summer

Maybe you’ve got a very specific look in mind when it comes to a stylish short-sleeve shirt — and perhaps, it just so happens to be a look that’s not actually stylish (Think: Maybe the short-sleeve shirts your dad used to wear?). We’re stepping it up in a big way today for the rest of summer, introducing you to what could just be your favorite short-sleeve shirt — and it should come as no surprise that it comes from Taylor Stitch in a handsome indigo fabric. See, it’s already a major improvement from other short-sleeve shirts. The best short-sleeve shirts on the market actually offer more versatility than you think, giving you the option to wear them to a rooftop cocktail hour or even to the office on a casual Friday — that’s the case with the Taylor Stitch Jack Shirt as seen below, at least. It’s the same fit you know and love, done in a way that just works for summer (namely, the lack of fabric on your arms). And when you pair it with slim chinos from Flint and Tinder, plus a sleek pair of refined leather slip-ons, you’re looking at a shirt that’s seriously sharp — not sloppy (a la Dwight Schrute). We’re even mixing in a stylish leather dress watch for good measure. The whole #OOTD below is visually interesting and versatile, fitting for a weekend patio dinner or weeknight rooftop drinks — or, again, a day at the office (the Taylor Stitch Jack Shirt never fails). Rethink what you thought you knew about the short-sleeve shirt, then let’s get down to business.

The Best Basics. Summer Ready.

A switched-up way to wear your new short-sleeve shirt from Taylor Stitch — cheers!

Shop Mott & Bow Today! So, do you think you’ve found your favorite short-sleeve shirt quite yet? Or a new way to wear it? Hopefully — and ideally, it’ll pair up nicely with slim chinos from Flint and Tinder for a nice mix of high-low style. When you use a slim short-sleeve shirt in rich indigo fabric as the base of your outfit, you’re setting the tone quite nicely — again, this isn’t a short-sleeve shirt of years past. You’re also making it clear that things are different when it comes to your refined leather slip-ons — dressier than white canvas sneakers, more laidback and summer-friendly than lace-up leather brogues. The rest of your accessories should also set the tone for a summer cocktail hour or a weekend dinner, from your stylish leather dress watch to a pair of the best men’s sunglasses — yes, that’s right. The best. The key with this entire ensemble comes in sticking to your guns: Keeping things summer-friendly and casual, yet cool. Duke Cannon’s Solid Cologne is an underrated grooming essential to take this look to the next level, and the Bespoke Post Worn Box, with a handsome money clip, keeps things nice and streamlined. How else to close out this #OOTD? Why, with a pair of the Flint and Tinder Heritage Boxer Briefs as an essential basic. Looking forward to the rest of summer? I know I am.

Karl Strauss Boat Shoes Hazy IPA — Price Varies

A bright and sunny IPA with a friendly name and cool can design.

I have good news and I have bad news: The good news, first, is that this hazy IPA nails everything you’d want from the Hazy IPA “trend” (if you can call it that). It’s imminently crushable, with a summer-friendly name and a cool can design. However, it’s only available in California within the brewery’s distribution footprint. If you have a trip planned out there soon, look for it! Speaking of boat shoes …

Yuketen Ox Mocs — $300

The casual, dependable summer moccasins to wear any time happy hour rolls around.

OK, while these aren’t technically classic boat shoes, the Yuketen Ox Mocs are perfect for easygoing summer style, and quite possibly the perfect pair of summer footwear to slip into as you sip on the Boat Shoes IPA.

Luminox Xcor Aerospace Pilot Professional Watch — $1,520

An investment-level watch that’s both incredibly expensive and incredibly worth the coin.

OK, is this tough Luminox timepiece truly the definition of an investment-level watch? Yes. Absolutely — but will you ever need to buy another rugged field watch again? No, sir.

Armor-Lux Breton Long-Sleeve Tee — $70

The breezy, casual, cool shirt to wear on a chilly summer night.

We’ve talked in the past about Armor-Lux and the brand’s certified iconic shirts — like the Armor-Lux Breton Long-Sleeve Tee, in fact. Wear this with tan chinos to a breezy beach bonfire.

Lisboa Francisco Brushed Oxford — $118

A new summer shirt that’s destined to become a go-to.

For me, I always love a stylish Western shirt from Taylor Stitch, of course. Let me know your favorite pick on Twitter — thanks for reading!

Style Pick of the Week: Taylor Stitch Trail Shorts

The perfect go-between when it comes to stylish summer shorts.

Surely, you’re not sick of hearing about the best men’s shorts for summer, are you? And surely, you’re definitely not sick of hearing about Taylor Stitch, everyone’s favorite, San Fra-based retailer … right? Well, that’s good, because we’re diving headfirst into both areas with today’s Style Pick of the Week, the Taylor Stitch Trail Shorts. Again, there’s a difference between average shorts and between the best new shorts on the market — and these are up for your consideration in that category. The Taylor Stitch Trail Shorts toe the line between casual and rugged, as fitting for a park stroll or a day hike as they are for grabbing a pint at your favorite brewery — and Taylor Stitch wouldn’t have it any other way. It starts with the old-school navy corduroy fabric, which is livened up for summer with 1 percent spandex — these aren’t stiff chino shorts, nor are they logo-heavy athletic shorts, and that means you can pair up the Taylor Stitch Trail Shorts with classic white sneakers and your favorite T-shirt just as easily as you can wear them with a new hemp polo and leather moccasins.
The Best Basics. Summer Ready.

SHOP: The Taylor Stitch Trail Shorts

Stylish shorts for whatever your summer holds — even skateboarding.

It’s tough to find shorts that again strike the balance between an active lifestyle and, y’know, actual style points, but the Taylor Stitch Trail Shorts take care of that handsomely. The light rinse gives them the kind of comfortable, lived-in feel you love, right out of the box, while the front slash pockets and stitched-down front pocket bags bring the whole “field shorts” vibe home. Thnk of the Taylor Stitch Trail Shorts like the old-school shorts your pops might have worn to go camping back in the day (again, ideally paired with classic leather mocs and a classic light beer). The point is, these are easy, breezy, super-stylish shorts, the kind you’d absolutely expect Taylor Stitch to produce — right? Right. And there’s still plenty of time to wear them for the rest of the summer, from bonfires to upstate camping trips and brewery visits. The 8-inch inseam should suit even the tall among us, too. What’s not to love about the Taylor Stitch Trail Shorts? There’s a long list of positives — to say the very least.

OK, now onto business — what’s on your weekend agenda? For me, it’s a rather packed one in Brooklyn — tonight marks the second night in a row I’ll be at my favorite music venue in NYC, the famed Brooklyn Steel! The occasion? A second show in a row by my second-favorite band, Local Natives! If you recall, I trekked to Portland earlier this spring to see this excellent indie rock band play a barnburner of a show behind the new album “Violet Street,” and I even met lead singer Taylor Rice out in PDX! And, last night was the first of a two-night run showing off those same tracks in Brooklyn, and with a varied setlist and stellar live sound, it was everything I thought it would be! So, if you want to follow along with tonight’s fun, join me on Instagram. The rest of my weekend is set to include a fun craft beer tour by bike with friends in Queens — and hopefully, some rest & some work on my Instagram! Again, if you care to join me on another social media platform, it’s appreciated. Now, I’ve got some work to do before the weekend. Cheers!

With that, I’ll be closing up shop for the weekend (well, until tomorrow’s Style Pick of the Week, at least). Until then, I’d urge you to shop for your perfect summer T-shirt, or else find your new favorite pair of summer shoes. That’s all I’ve got today! Cheers.

The Friday Read: The Strokes, OluKai Sneakers & Memorial Day Weekend

The dependable sneakers to wear all summer long.

Looking to get acquainted with perhaps the perfect pair of summer sneakers? A pair that’s going to outfit you for anything and everything you need, from outdoor grilling to early morning training? It is Memorial Day weekend, after all. In that vein, turn toward the OluKia ‘Inana Sneakers (as seen above) this weekend — they’re some of the best new sneakers to throw on your feet. Now that you’ve got your stylish sneakers sorted out for the weekend, let’s turn toward the matter at hand — as we mentioned, it’s Memorial Day weekend! This long weekend marks the official (unofficial?) start of summer, plus a great opportunity to head to the beach or pool, open up your cabin for the season, and naturally … shop some of the best summer style essentials around. My travels won’t quite be taking me to a lake, though.

A legendary band returns to the U.K. for the first time in four years this weekend.

I’m actually heading across the pond yet again this year to take in the newly icnonic All Points East Festival, headlined by none other than world-famous rockers The Strokes! My last trip overseas took me to chilly Dublin, but I expect a warm London weekend brought in by an iconic rock band this time around. The Strokes were a seminal band for me during college and beyond, and it didn’t hurt that they defined the sound of the early-’00s NYC rock revival! It’s fitting that they’re joined at this festival by none other than post-punk rock champions Interpol (another favorite!) and … *cue the applause* Jack White’s The Raconteurs! It’s an action-packed lineup for one heck of a great price at All Points East, and the perfect chance for me to explore London (and particularly the cool Shoreditch neighborhood near the festival) for a few days. Care to follow along? Head to my Instagram or my Twitter to check out all the action. Maybe throw on some tunes by The Strokes as you do. Now, that’s all I’ve got today — I’ve got a flight to catch!

  • If ever you peruse the pages of this blog, or the pages of one of my other favorite sites (GearMoose!), you might know I love recommending a stylish polo for summer. In that same vein, I wrote about the Wellen Hemp Polo, a sustainable and well-made menswear essential that’s going to keep you cool, yet sharp, as the thermostat climbs.
  • Every week, we (and by we, I mean me) try to tell you about the men’s basics that aren’t so, well, basic. On that front, I can’t recommend the Taylor Stitch Heavy Bag Tee enough — I wrote about it recently here on the blog, and it’s surely worth your time if you want a dependable summer T-shirt that gets the job done.
  • Style and toughness is the name of the game when it comes to the best men’s dive watches — wouldn’t you agree? It’s with that approachable aim in mind that I wrote about my favorites for my friends at The Manual.  Taking on summer just got a whole lot more stylish.

So with that, it’s time to wrap up today’s edition of The Friday Read — before you head out for Memorial Day weekend, I’d advise you to check out my #OOTD (quickly!) on the best travel gear to wear for spring and summer. You won’t regret it. Until tomorrow’s Style Pick of the Week, cheers!

See Now, Buy Now: Layer Up for Spring with the Unbeatable Taylor Stitch Heavy Bag Tee

A dependable, substantial T-shirt to separate you from the pack this spring.

I always say that the little details, the really basic things, often make a difference in matters of men’s style, and so it goes with the best men’s T-shirts — like the exceptional Taylor Stitch Heavy Bag Tee. Like I said in the headline above, it’s unbeatable, Although at first it looks like a simple pocket tee, this incredibly well-made number has the potential to be your new favorite T-shirt — and it certainly lives up to that potential. The Heavy Bag Tee clears the high standards set by Taylor Stitch across the board with each of its releases, from the Taylor Stitch Ranch Boots to the indigo shirt that’s one of my all-time favorites.  But again, if it’s just a T-shirt, then what’s the big deal? Not so fast, my friends.
In short, the Taylor Stitch Heavy Bag Tee delivers the goods if you want a substantial, stylish and well-crafted tee that’s a step up (a serious step up) from your standard fast-fashion tee. Taylor Stitch knows how to deliver on quality, and the durable upcycled cotton-polyester blend has some heft to it without being overly hard to layer underneath a classic chambray shirt or a rugged trucker jacket. That versatility is good news, because you’ll want to wear the Heavy Bag Tee all the time — the range of colors, from Cypress (as seen at the top) to Cypress Stripe (as seen below) & classic options like Navy are only huge positives. Small details like the rounded chest pocket and taped shoulder seams ensure everything is in its proper place.

SHOP: The Taylor Stitch Heavy Bag Tee

But one of the range of color and pattern options you get with the Heavy Bag Tee.

The truly great thing about the Heavy Bag Tee is that thanks to the durable fabric and excellent fit, it almost doesn’t feel like you’re wearing a T-shirt. That is to say, this stylish T-shirt has enough visual interest and heft to wear on its own or layered under something as spring-friendly as a classic cotton blazer at the office. And for your off-duty ‘fits, it teams reliably with your favorite pair of denim and new suede chukka boots. The thing about a shirt as reliable as the Taylor Stitch Heavy Bag Tee is that it can be worn just about any way you please — it’s more than just your average tee.

With that in mind, the Common Project Achilles is an investment-worthy winner.
Status Audio BT One Wireless Bluetooth Headphones — $120

The coolest pair of Bluetooth headphones your money can buy.

Whenever I travel, I’ve simply got to bring along a pair of stylish Bluetooth headphones — kind of like the Status Audio BT One. No, exactly like these. They’re affordably priced, yet engineered to deliver crystal-clear sound without the hassle of cords.
Rogue Territory ISC Work Shirt — $210

A crisp, tough overshirt made for spring layering.

Remember: Just because it’s spring, doesn’t mean you should put away all your rugged overshirts just yet. This one from Rogue Territory makes for perfectly minimal styling atop a classic pocket tee. Speaking of classic pocket tees …
UNTUCKit Garment-Dyed Pocket Tee — $39

The classic pocket tee that’s comfortable enough to wear all summer.

I’d wager you know UNTUCKit from the brand’s commitment to making perfectly fitting casual shirts — and that same approach also extends to this super-soft garment-dyed pocket tee. It’s the ideal summer T-shirt when worn with tan chinos and white canvas sneakers, especially in the Ozeki Teal color, and it looks great … untucked. It’s the type of tee worth investing in.
VANS Authentic Sneakers in Black — $50

Stand out in subtle style with these classic sneakers.

There’s no way around it: VANS makes some of the best men’s sneakers out there, especially now that we’re properly getting into spring and summer. Wear these with your dark blue slim denim.

#OOTD: Your New Favorite Way to Dress for a Breezy Spring Day

You might have a picture-perfect idea of the type of day for which today’s #OOTD might fit. It’s a little bit brisk, but not too much so … it’s sunny … but it might rain later … and you’re looking forward to indulging in some early spring sunshine and perhaps, a classic spring beer. So, what are you wearing?  Well, let’s start things out with a stylish rain jacket that just so happens to be weather-ready, then let’s add a slim cashmere sweater, a classic Taylor Stitch shirt, and travel-friendly pants. How does that sound? Not bad, right? The key with dressing for a breezy spring day involves recognizing that you’ll need to be prepared for anything — brunch could lead to a farmer’s market trip, which could lead to patio beers. Or, heck, you might just be wondering what to wear to the office this spring. At any rate, I feel confident the below gear picks will suffice. That goes for the durable waterproof boots we’re recommending, along with the classic field watch on your wrist. I think you’ll be that much more ready for the season when you read all about the rest of today’s men’s style essentials below. Now, who’s ready for a Founders Solid Gold?

What do you get when you blend a lightweight, durable jacket with spring style essentials? This #OOTD, of course.

It’s not every day you get to put together an ensemble full of men’s style essentials to take you through plenty of different style situations — just like the picks shown above. It all comes together thanks to the functional rain jacket from Proof, perfect for taking on spring showers or simply serving as another layer when the temperature dips unexpectedly. From there, it only gets better: A slim cashmere crewneck is a lightweight, comfortable layer atop the Taylor Stitch Jack Shirt, and if it gets too hot out? Simply ditch the sweater. The Proof Rover Pants are also a winning essential, made to move with you no matter where your day takes you. The same can certainly be said for the dependable, rugged leather boots from Tricker’s shown here — pair them up with a set of Topo Designs socks for all-day comfort. When it comes to your everyday carry, you can never go wrong with a tough field watch — ideal for the office or your favorite brewpub. And what to bring along to keep all your gear safe? That’s easy.
