The List: Here’s All the New, Rugged Menswear to Rock This Fall

It’s time for another edition of The List, everyone’s favorite bimonthly roundup of, quite simply, the best men’s gear out there.  And today, we’re covering rugged gear for early fall — seeing as we’re nearing October, it seems fitting … right? By now, maybe you’ve stored away your classic summer sneakers and are reaching for heavier layers, pieces with some texture and heft to them. That’s all GREAT in the opinion of this #menswear writer — I can’t wait to break out even more fall style essentials across the weeks ahead. With that in mind, let’s check out this edition of The List — feel free to shoot me a note on Twitter with any questions, comments, feedback … you know the drill. Here we go!

Zodiac Super Sea Wolf 53 Compression Watch — $1,074.98

Taylor Stitch Crewneck Pocket Tee — $58

Sturdy Brothers Everyday Belt in Chestnut — $80

A uniquely textured, uniquely built shirt fit for fall layering.

More Taylor Stitch menswear in this edition of The List? Certainly. Spiegelau IPA Glasses (Set of Four) — $32
Spiegelau

The best way to enjoy your favorite IPA — right? Right.

The List: Kick off Early Fall with the Best Men’s Gear

As we’ve been saying for a while now on The Style Guide, fall will be here before you know it. It’s the best time of the year for #menswear, what with a return to texture-heavy outfits, rugged layering and old style favorites — plus the chance to hit the road for crisp fall weekend adventures galore. And we’re getting into the swing of things a few weeks before the official start of fall with today’s edition of The List. Unlike our last edition of The List, which focused on the best gear to buy to close out summer, we’re looking toward menswear essentials with a bit more grit, a bit more rugged style and a bit more fall-ready wearability. Am I the only one excited for that first crisp fall day? Maybe? Well, let’s change that as quick as we can.  Follow me on Instagram to see how I’m getting ready for fall — and know that we’re officially going to debut our Fall Style Wish List later this week.

Original Penguin P55 Bedford Cord 5-Pocket Pant — $89

Original Penguin

A slim-fitting pair of cotton trousers in a unique fall shade.

There’s no better way to ease into fall — and ease away from slim light wash denim — than with textured cotton pants in an earthy fall color.

Bespoke Post Concentrate Box — $45 (When Signing Up for Bespoke Post)

Organize your desk AND brew a great batch of cold brew, all at once.

I’m the type of guy who can enjoy excellent cold brew nearly all year long — and if that’s the case for you, the Bespoke Post Concentrate Box features essentials to make your own cold brew and organize your home office.

Danner Vertigo 917 Boots — $199.98

One part hiker, one part sneaker — and all ready for fall, any way you slice it.

Want a set of shoes that straddles the line between between purely a hiking boot or purely a sneaker? The Danner 917 Boots do both — wear ’em with dark slim jeans and a rugged fall jacket for a day trip.

Original Penguin Pigment Overprint Shirt — $89

A thoughtfully crafted shirt, perfect for fall layering.

Early fall is an ideal time to reach for pieces with a bit more texture and visual interest — this richly colored Original Penguin shirt would team nicely with the brand’s Bedford Cords as seen above.

Baxter of California Safety Razor Set — $260
Baxter of California

Make your next shave premium and refined with Baxter of California.

Are you the type of guy who appreciates the finer, perhaps more underappreciated things in life? Like shaving with an old-school razor? This handsome Baxter of California Safety Razor Set should do the job nicely.

Make your next chinos mobile, tailored and relatively affordable. Job well-done, Banana Republic.

Tailored chinos that look as great as they feel? Available in a range of colors, including classic khaki? Banana Republic is onto something with its Rapid Movement Chinos, which I’ve had the chance to test out & enjoy lately.
Taylor Stitch California Shirt in Army Micro Cord — $125
Taylor Stitch

A cool corduroy shirt that gives off modern — not retro — vibes thanks to the tailored fit.

Shirting from Taylor Stitch always sells quickly — and performs reliably and stylishly. This textured corduroy shirt in a neat shade of green should become a go-to fall style move.

Nisolo Diego Low Sneakers — $129.98
Nisolo footwear

A richly crafted leather sneaker that provides edge and versatility.

Early fall is as good a time as any to break out stylish leather sneakers with a bit of rugged edge — the Nisolo Diego Low should work as well with a classic striped henley as with a rugged men’s T-shirt.

Bespoke Post Savor Box — $45 (When Signing Up for Bespoke Post)

The Friday Read: Shinola, Pitti Uomo and New Music by The Killers

This week, I’ve found myself looking back — and looking forward — quite a bit.  I’ve been looking back on an incredible mini-trip to Philadelphia and New Jersey to see The Killers about two weeks ago now, and I’ve also been looking back on a great family wedding weekend in Charleston. Both trips brought amazing memories, a dash of excellent #menswear and hearty helpings of craft beer (and in the case of my Jersey trip, stunning live tunes!).

I’m also looking forward to a few other momentous events coming up, including a holiday weekend in NYC surrounding the Fourth of July, plus an exciting month of live music (including a mid-July show by one of my all-time favorite bands, The Naked and Famous!). In the meantime, you can be sure we’ll be talking plenty of men’s style news on the site, from American-made denim to the best shorts to buy for summer and the best new men’s gear to buy now— and plenty more! If that’s of interest, I’d say you should definitely stick around. Before we get to that though, we’ve got a laidback weekend in the Big Apple coming up, and a full rundown of the week in #menswear to kick it off — per usual, as it were! Follow me on Instagram to keep up with the latest, and have a drink on me tonight.

Beckett Simonon

Two distinctly different shoe options available for pre-order from an excellent retailer.

  • Let’s talk summer wedding style as mentioned above — what’s your dress shoe situation like? If you’ve got some time to plan ahead, the fine folks of Beckett Simonon can surely sort you out, and quite handsomely. The company’s well-done pre-ordering process — one that updates you every step of the way via E-mail, from production to shipping — is definitely quite neat. Of course, you might know Beckett Simonon from a Style Pick of the Week entry on the terrific Cole Bomber Jacket on this site, but the brand is so much more.  Perhaps you’re familiar with the insanely cool-looking Morgen Trainer as seen above? And from the handsome Dean Oxford in Brown Leather to a sharp and useful collection of three Italian leather belts, the company’s fine craft is evident throughout the entire process. Again, if you’ve got some time to plan ahead, pre-order one (or several?) pairs of the brand’s stylish men’s dress shoes and be prepared to take that late summer wedding by storm.
  • In retail news, one of my favorite purveyors of stylish leather watches, Shinola, just opened what should be an incredible, well-appointed retail space in chic SoHo here in NYC. Swing by if you’re in the Big Apple — you can find this shop in addition to the new Shinola Brooklyn shop and the brand’s handsome flagship in Tribeca. Happy shopping! be
  • We’re at it again — the three-ring circus that is the traveling band of menswear shows (kidding, kidding) is starting up again, this time at the world’s largest menswear fair, Pitti Uomo. As always, it’s brought out its fair share of well-dressed guys and … overly dressed guys. See the best-dressed guys at Pitt Uomo here.
  • Among other menswear developments, I’m particularly excited about a new series launched recently on the blog — it’s called The List, and it’s a rundown of great gear and essentially, the best menswear to buy now. Our first List included a plethora of great picks, from stylish Chelsea boots to a handsome leather watch and summer drinking essentials from my good pals at Bespoke Post. I’m very much looking forward to continuing the series, and I hope you’re looking forward to reading it.
  • Let’s start to wrap things up with some music — agreed? The Killers — a stunning, soul-stirring and ridiculously excellent live band  — released their new single, “The Man” late last week. It was fitting coming off of my weekend trip to New Jersey to see them play! Have you heard it yet? It’s a groovy, heavy, funky track that might fit in more readily with Mr. Brandon Flowers’ solo work … and yet, it’s got me as excited as ever to hear their new album, “Wonderful, Wonderful.”
  • Now, I’m moreso a proponent of stylish summer sneakers, but that didn’t stop me from writing about the best sandals for men over at one of my favorite style sites, GearMoose — they’re definitely a summer style essential if you’re on the beach or the boardwalk. Shop on!
    Greats
In short order, that’s going to wrap up today’s Friday Read — are you ready for the weekend yet? I’m ready to kick back, relax and enjoy a nice, cold beer (or an iced coffee). Catch me tomorrow for our regularly scheduled Style Pick of the Week, and we’ll see you around!

The List: All the Gear You Need to Shop During June

Best everyday carry for guys

From stylish LSTN Sound Co. headphones via Bespoke Post to a sharp Daniel Wellington watch and a handsome valet tray from Billykirk, this is the sort of gear you’ll find on The List.

As a menswear writer, I come across a fair bit of, well, stuff. From my personal shopping to planning out the #OOTD series and Style Pick of the Week entries here at The Style Guide, it’s an ongoing endeavor to sort through different sites to find products that 1) I’d wear and 2) I think you might enjoy. That’s what it’s all about, right? With that being said, there are only so many hours in the day — and there’s only so much of my writing you likely want to read (I kid, I kid).  That brings me to the real point of today’s post — we’re kicking off a brand-new series here on the blog.

It’s called The List, and it’s simply that: A collection of intriguing finds, surprising items, stylish summer footwear, cool accessories, … anything that should be of interest to a reader like yourself, and (mostly) anything that hasn’t made it into regularly scheduled blog content. Think of it as a look at the best new gear for guys, in a way. There are no rankings or categories here — just the best o’ the best. Curated by your humble team of one, it’ll cover a pretty solid spectrum of #menswear, and I hope to keep it rolling monthly — or heck, more frequently than that. One final note — as to our other recent series, Style Guide Recommends, you can look for another entry in the coming weeks. Until then, sit tight, follow me on Instagram, and shop The List!
