Even though summer is well and truly here (being past Memorial Day and all), it seems like there’s still an adjustment period in terms of what works and what doesn’t in terms of all-season wear. On a personal level, that means it still feels weird to ditch even light wash denim in favor of shorts, for example. That’s why it’s a positive (and useful) thing to be able to incorporate simple seasonal style essentials into your #OOTD no matter the weather. And in this instance, a great pair of cotton chinos definitely qualifies as a four-season #menswear staple. So if you recognize the chinos at the top of this page, you’re in good company. Buck Mason has popped up from time to time on The Style Guide before (including the brand’s classic blue Oxford),  and they’re back again today for very good reason. Finding investment pieces that work in multiple outfits is a tough thing if you don’t know where to look (or even if you do), and the brand’s Sand Chinos are just the ticket to solving those issues — and although they come in shades ranging from Olive to Iron, the Sand color is the way to go this week. Crafted from a 10oz. cotton twill in a color that’s a versatile take on khaki, they feature a tailored fit, a mid rise and the sort of look that works with everything from a slub pocket tee to a slim polo and classic navy sneakers. Really, that’s just the start.

They’re American-made, so that’s another thing going for ’em. And although the price is higher than, say, the Taylor Stitch Standard Issue Chino, it’s just as worth it.  Particularly in the summer, they’ll work just as well as your favorite pair of classic dark denim. Pair these with a slim white henley and brown leather sneakers for crisp weekend style, or toss these on with a cheeky graphic tee and chukka boots for a night out. And during the work week, they’re an especially solid style move — with a slim chambray shirt and brown suede wingtips, they’ll set you apart from other folks at the office — in a good way.  And even for an outdoor wedding, they’ll do the trick. Sharp leather loafers and a white chambray shirt are the ideal complements for such a style scenario, and they’ll do you well in cold weather with a  shawl cardigan and thermal henley. Last week’s Friday Read dove in a bit with the unexpected — that is, a larger look at the excellent JackThreads TryOuts program. But we’re back this Friday with a look at Governors Ball and more. Before we kick it off, are you all caught up on The Style Guide front? If not, check out a recent trip upstate I took for Memorial Day weekend (crucial #menswear in tow, of course). And read up on the essential white sneakers you need for summer, while we’re here. The holiday means it’s a busy and short week, made even shorter by the fact that I’m cutting work (just kidding) to attend day one of three of the excellent Governors Ball music festival here in NYC! It’s been a long time in the planning, and I’m excited to welcome in two great college friends for a weekend of fun, outstanding music from the likes of The Strokes, The Killers, HAIM, MisterWives, Cold War Kids and plenty more. It’s pretty special to be able to attend such a jam-packed festival solely by taking the subway, so that’s very exciting. I’m also teaming up with the great folks at CAT Footwear to share a few photos of my gear across the weekend, so be on the lookout for that via Instagram — and look for a full festival recap on Monday.  For now, recap the week in men’s style news with a few choice links below.

  • I’ve really been digging the content I’ve been reading from the new issue of Esquire, particularly the outlook of its new Esquire editor-in-chief Jay Fielden — his first letter from the editor is definitely worth a read.
  • On another style-related front, the fine purveyors of some of my favorite sneakers, Brooklyn’s GREATS, have teamed up with menswear aficionado Josh Peskowitz and his much-lauded new store, Magasin, on a seriously cool update to its Pronto sneaker (which is crafted from fine Italian suede). Get the GREATS x Magasin Pronto before it’s too late, seriously.
  • In music news (and even if you’ve heard), The Strokes released their new single, “Oblivius,” last week — it’s the first new tune from the band in three years, and I’m particularly excited to hear it live tonight!

In other matters of men’s style, we’ve got you covered:

  • Staying cool is paramount as it gets hot out — that’s why I had a ton of fun writing up the five best linen shirts for summer via The Manual. I’ll be putting together my own piece in that regard for this site later this summer, too.

$85 is a lot to drop on a leather bracelet, to be sure, but Shinola crafts these pieces with the same attention to detail it applies to its stunning watches — that goes for both men’s and women’s accessories. The look of this wrap bracelet (in an eye-catching, rich navy leather) is a bit more unique than a standard thin leather bracelet or a silver bangle, although something along those lines could work, too. If the recipient in question isn’t so much into jewelry, one of the brand’s lovely small leather goods (like a wallet or a phone case) could be of interest.

If you haven’t really planted or done much gardening lately due to weather or space constraints, air plants are a cool way to brighten up a living space and add a pop of color to various areas of your home. If the lucky mom is into gardening or simply caring for plants, the gift is all the better. Depending on where you buy them from, the air plants themselves are a downright steal. And the air plant pod purchasing options vary, too — a word that you have to hand over an email to gain access to the particularly colorful pods shown here, but that small move could definitely pay off in the form of a well-thought out gift.

This particular category was part of last year’s Mother’s Day Gift Guide, and it makes a triumphant return this year — after all, who doesn’t love to read in the spring or summertime? Particularly if it’s “Eligible,” an update of the classic “Pride and Prejudice”? Tough to top, especially written in a slightly cheeky and entertaining manner. A fun beach or travel read, at a low cost to you, the mindful shopper.

For the Foodie: Chrissy Teigen’s “Cravings: Recipes for All the Food you Want to Eat” — $14.95

Although Chrissy Teigen is arguably more famous for her modeling pursuits and being married to some dude named John Legend, she’s a pretty great chef, at least according to her Instagram — oh, and this book. She’s well-known, funny and engaging on social media, so there’s a good chance Mom might be a fan. On top of that the cookbook is a collection of her favorite recipes over the years, and it’s all put together in a fun, engaging and colorful manner. If her social media shares are to be believed, the food should be excellent — and enjoyable to make for whomever might receive this cookbook!

The selection is well-edited, relatively affordable and varied — something for everyone, right?

While the above picks don’t cover the full range of options — perhaps consider a well-thought out exercise or travel-related gift if the mom in question loves either of those, for example, hopefully the above ideas get you thinking beyond a more typical gift. Style Pick of the Week: Taylor Stitch Long Haul Waxed Canvas Jacket

There are some items that you see online and immediately think — or in this case, exclaim aloud — “WHOA,” and certainly one of the best men’s field jackets is good enough to do that. The item that did that for me this week is the crazy-sweet Taylor Stitch jacket you see at the top of the page — and that’s almost not even a good enough adjective to describe it. Yes indeed, the Long Haul Jacket in Field Tan Waxed Canvas is the latest in a growing line of exceptionally stylish and durable-looking product releases from the made-in-America purveyors at California-based Taylor Stitch. If you’re not familiar with the brand, take a moment to acquaint yourself. They stock both a regular rotation of everyday Essentials  — things like chambray shirts, Oxfords and their famous Standard Issue Chinos — in addition to the crowdfunding they use to produce products (like the jacket you see here) in small batches. That model is clearly working, as the Long Haul Jacket is a runaway hit to the tune of being more than 350% funded as of press time. They’ve become a Style Guide regular (check out a past Style Pick feature here), and that’s due in large part to the strength and style potential of their product, which is timeless and well-crafted. The Long Haul Jacket would certainly seem to stand up to that test at first glance — and that first glance is a stunner (or is it just me?).

This rather beastly-looking jacket is crafted from 7 oz. Martexin waxed canvas designed to repel water, and comes complete with tonal Brisbane Moss corduroy-lined cuffs and collar for an extra bit of vintage style inspiration. The flap chest pockets and front-welt hand-warmer pockets (along with the silhouette in general) call to mind a classic denim jacket — except a denim jacket won’t pack nearly the punch that this thing will. The copper rivets and buttons look sturdy, an underrated point of emphasis that can make a big difference — don’t want any buttons falling off, eh? So the design features appear at first glance to be exceptionally solid. And of course, the styling potential for this jacket is nearly through the roof. The weight and water-repellent functionality should make it a terrific spring jacket — that’s perfect, given that it should ship in late March after pre-funding and production. And the color and sturdy waxed canvas mean you can wear it into fall with solid layers, too. It’s the perfect jacket to toss on over a grey henley and black denim, and you can mix up your office style by pairing it with a chambray shirt and a navy knit tie. And about that price — for a jacket that you can wear that much, the pre-funding mark of $148 is a downright steal. Get on it, and get excited for spring.

If you grew up in a household like mine, you might have had a lovely mom (Hi, Mom!) who really enjoyed putting together delicious meals and desserts galore (Editor’s note: Very much looking forward to all those Christmas cookies). While it could also be great to consider a book that fits her particular interests, there’s a good in-between option if you’re stuck: A Field Guide To Getting Lost  is, by all accounts, introspective, fascinating and well-written. And who doesn’t like a book that checks those boxes? It’s a nice deal that’ll provide good value beyond just one read, too (see, this is just like menswear!). A cool desk calendar with some nice color is a simple way to brighten up a space, and it complements the wanderlust theme of the book — a one-two punch!

As we talk about style upgrades in the menswear world, the same idea can apply to little things like cocktail plates. This set of Kate Spade plates  in particular plays off that motif quite nicely; the patterns are pleasing and just a bit fun, too. This is another gift that you could complement with a nice handwritten card or perhaps, a photo of yourself. If your grandmother is more into something like understated jewelry, this silver cuff could be the perfect gift. Conversely, playing to her interests with a book by a well-loved author could also be just the thing to do.

The key when giving gifts is to play to the interests and hobbies  of the recipient — and the biggest thing that goes into that is putting thought and attention into what you give! Style Pick of the Week: United By Blue Standard Henley

While last week’s Style Pick focused on an incredibly lux, pricey Shinola wool bomber jacket, we’ll dial things back a bit this week to something a little more basic. Namely, that crucial first layer you throw on during the chillier months of fall and winter. And what else would you reach for (if you’re me, at least) than an excellent, rugged henley? If you hadn’t yet gotten the memo, I can resend — I’m a huge fan of henleys, be they short-sleeve or long-sleeve, for the tough styling potential they provide. You can style them just about any way you please — under a shawl cardigan, beneath a leather jacket, or even underneath a dark navy buttondown. And while I’ve spotlighted Pistol Lake and other brands a good amount, I’m a considerate man when it comes to henleys — particularly in those instances when the brand that produces said henley does so with a great cause in mind. United By Blue has popped up on this small corner of the blogosphere a few times (namely in this Style Q&A), and its Standard Henley in Navy is the weekly Pick this go-round for all kinds of good (and stylish) reasons.

This two-tone henley is crafted from 100% organic cotton, a big selling point if you’re an eco-conscious shopper (and in this era, that should be something to which more of us pay attention, ehh?). It’s a waffle ribbed cotton knit, so it’s got some good texture to it — enough so that you shouldn’t feel out of place rocking it under, say, a blue chambray shirt, or even as the top half of an outfit featuring navy sneakers. It features a modern but not too constraining fit — and if’s going to be a bottom layer anyway, maybe it’s not such a bad thing that it’s sold out in a Large at the moment? Here’s the real kicker though — when you buy it, United By Blue will remove one pound of trash from local and regional waterways, and it enlists its friendly and helpful employees to get out in the community to do so. Pretty cool, yeah? At $54, it’s a bit more than your average henley — it could be a nice splurge purchase as a gift, or even a request for good ol’ Santa? Back to the product, though — the chambray trim gives it some nice visual contrast, so I’d say don’t be afraid to rock this under a brown wool blazer and some grey trousers for a high-low office outfit. Of course, it’ll more than hold its own with some great fall and winter corduroys and a casual cardigan for casual days. See, you can and should wear a henley like this as many ways as possible.

As it’s finally Friday, I almost have all of my voice back following the aftermath of that insane, thrilling and incredible Michigan State-Michigan football game last weekend. If you missed the ending, well, you’re in for a treat there. And the football hysteria is actually set to continue for me this weekend, because as luck would have it, I’m hitting the road back to East Lansing for a weekend spent with friends on the best campus in the country (in my humble opinion). I’m also getting the chance to go back to my hometown of Mason, a lovely place where time really slows down — that’ll be a welcome change of pace from New York City. And it’s always great to get back to your roots. But for matters in the present, we’ll catch you up with some of the best #menswear news of the week. The big news out of Style Guide HQ this week isn’t, in fact, related to New York City at all. Style Pick of the Week: Everlane Slim Pant

They’re finally here, folks. A long-awaited release from buzzed-about Web retailer Everlane.

Drumroll, please … after years of doing simple basics the right way for guys, Everlane stepped into uncharted territory with its latest release earlier this week — pants. The Everlane Slim Pant, to be specific.  A year-plus of research  led the brand to its newest offering, which joins other minimal yet well-designed pieces like pocket T-shirts, polos and sweaters in an increasingly expanding number of styles. But right now, the pants are what have people talking. And for this first big foray into a new product category, Everlane has (in characteristic fashion) kept things exceedingly simple. Just three colors (midnight black, a pleasing shade of heightened navy, and classic khaki). The versatility of these colors goes without saying — even a black pair of pants is starting to look promising again, ehh? And the fit details they’ve worked into the design make them even more versatile.

They feature 2% elastane stretch built in (similar to Mott & Bow denim), offering a little give when you move around. And the slim yet not overly tailored fit is definitely to be desired as well. GQ got the scoop on the release earlier this week, and had nothing but good things to say — promising words indeed. While these pants appear at first to have several great things going for them, the transparency and lack of a retailer markup is key — that makes these a $65 pair of pants as opposed to $140, according to the brand. The breathable cotton weave should make these as versatile as something like the Washed Chino from Bonobos — a true four-season chino. The navy (or heck, black or khaki) would look excellent right now with an olive henley and equally sharp with a grey sweater come chillier fall nights.
